Mrs. Pires is really cool. She laughs at her own jokes and gives very little work and very few tests. She made the class very interesting.
As a person I really didn't like her but as a teacher she is the greatest. Not a lot of homework. Many in-class sessions were very helpful. Grades based on participation in class, 3 research papers & 3 tests.
Great teacher easy to understand, willing to help you in any way to raise your grade.
Good teacher, well educated in the subject matter. Respectful and honest
She teaches great. She knows what she is talking about, and she gives her time to help students.
Pay attention, buy or print the outline she offers, write those papers and your good to go
Take this teacher. Make sure you buy the packet and study the study guides for the test, and do the homework, you will pass, just do the work. Very nice teacher.
very nice professor! very helpful and funny! online class is easy as long as you keep up with the reading! Don't wait til the last minute to do your assingments and you'll be ok! her tests are multiple questions (50 questions) and the other half are essay questions (3), respond to discussion board and reply to 3 of your classmates! offers e.c. 2!!
She teaches at saddleback too. She was helpful but her lectures are boring!!!!!She is also really weird about people leaving during class or during the break. This isn't that easy of a class, its easy but i thought it would be easier. Make sure you attend class and do the class activity and stay on top of things.
Great Online class. Ms. Pires' instructions are extremely clear.
She is 1 of the best teachers I've ever had. If u go 2 class& pay attention u will have no problem w/this course. She's funny&keeps u interested in the subject matter. She gives hand outs so u kno exactly what's on the test&doesnt try to confuse u. She breaks things down&answers ALL Q's. Plus she is ALWAYS avail by email&responds back quick! :-)
Be prepared to read and watch hours of material a week. I devote 6-8 hrs a week on each subject; however, Pires expects double and she even states it in her online class. Consider this class to be equivalent to a 4-5 unit class instead of a 3 unit. If you want a challenging instructor...this is the one for you!
Great teacher.Explains her stuff thoroughly. Test are Straight forward just do your packets, take notes, and use the study guide. Theres a few papers But it's nothing to worry about. Take her for sociology. She knows her stuff and makes her class interesting. ;)
One of the easiest classes at Valley, but she is the rudest teacher I have encountered.
Mrs. Pires online class is very interesting, I highly recommend it. Study, take notes, follow directions & you can't miss. You will learn alot & for sure get an A. She knows her stuff & explains it well. Get back to right away. Loved the class, would take it again if I could.
Took her for an online honors course. She was extremely helpful and made it easy to pass as long as you did the work. The class wasn't hard if you tried. But slacking off will not give u a passing grade.
Very helpful just go to class take notes and ask for help if something doesnt make sense she is very understanding and helpful good class
Professor Pires is one of the best Sociology professor at Valley. She made everything very understandable. She is very helpful. She hates when people walk in late but other than that very nice.
Very easy, attendance is necessary because almost all of her assignments are in class activities. Wrote one paper and only had 3 or 4 hw assignments.I would recommend this teacher. I did all the assignment 10 minutes before class and got an A.
Teacher was great class was informative and easy, but must do all the work. Work is Doable. My first online Class Great experience I hope all are the same...Do the work get the grade.. work is managable...
professor pires was very helpful. Its mandatory that you come on time to class, she doesn't like when students are late. She had a lot of ways of explaining sociology to students and even used her own experiences growing up, which i thought was helpful. I recommend taking her class. She really cares!
Pires was very tough. If you want to learn the subject she is the instructor for you. She is also very challenging. You can not slack on the work that is given. Very strict! Do not be late, do not walk outside for a phone call, and do not talk in class. Over all great teacher!
I took this professor for sociology 100H ONLINE and it was my first time taking an online class, but she made the transition very easy for me. The class does have a large adequate amount of work (especially writing), but nothing too difficult to accomplish. Got an "A" in the class. Highly recommend her for ONLINE!
Ridiculous on grading papers, never again would i take her or recommend her, unfair with grading and doesn't even recognize effort or look ate viewpoints. Don't take her theres other teachers for sociology that are way better
She's kind of mean, but overall I learned a lot and would take her again. She grades pretty hard.
she is ok. she gives examples and lots of work but her grading is kinda tough she takes points off for the littlest things if is not written how she teaches it is partially wrong if she worked on her ppl skills i'd take her again.
She is a really good teacher. PERIOD. She is passionate about her job and sociology in general. She has a ton of experience in this field. This class is not very easy, but I guarantee you that you will learn so many new things in this class. Be prepared to learn and listen because she is going to cram all that knowledge whether you like it or not.
Not the easiest class. Lots of critical thinking, relating, and applying. Even with your best work and effort, her grading standards remain somewhat difficult to please. Feedback from her is available upon request. If adjustments are made, grades certainly don't show that she noticed. Extremely fast and efficient at grading in a timely fashion.
She's a good teacher & very quick in grading. However no matter how much I put my effort in, she was never satisfied. I was barely hanging to get a B. Hard class, but it's okay. She's really organized though. Perfect for an online class!
Wonderful instructor, must have book and be ready to learn in her class. Hard on grading assignments, so do your best. You will work in this class, but you come out learning many things about Sociology.
She treats the courses as if everyone is an Honors student with nothing but time. I would not recommend her to anyone with a job or anything less than 12 hours a week to spend on working on her ridiculous amount of busy work.
Anyone taking Sociology i would not recommend taking her, her class was absolutely ridiculous when students would go to her for questions and other topics she was somewhat rude and not helpful. Thank goodness I was able to find another professor to take for sociology. Her class was a waste of time.
She does not help at all. Consistently goes off topic for long periods of time. Lengthy homework assignments that are pointless including 4-6 page essay on a video that really doesn't have much to do with the subject. Harsh grading. First B i've received since calculus.
Stay Away! She is the rudest professor I have ever had. Take another professor or substitute this class for another class in a different subject. I'm warning you, take someone else.
Worst professor ever!!! Don't take a class with her, her work is confusing and she is rude!! Seriously dislike her and now anything that has to do with sociology thanks to her.
Great teacher!! She is very professional and organized! Passionate about her job! Makes what is expected very clear! Lectures are very organized and she makes it relate-able and interesting making it more likely to stick!Pay attention, follow directions, show and do the work and youll be fine! Shes not rude! she is just very blunt and to the point!
she good and pretty easy had her for soc 100 110 and 130
straight forward, honest, intelligent just be on time!!! take care and time with her assignments, she t of book mostly and powerpoint uses real experiences movies she shows are completely relevant. great person great teacher
If you like to read the whole book, shes your teacher. She gives generous amount of extra credit. Expects you to talk with her one on one. Okay teacher overall.
SHE IS A HARD GRADER BUT THE WORK IS NOT HARD.
I took her for summer school and I passed. She is a great teacher!
Professor Pires can be very tough on grading written assignments when you're not on the EXACT same mindset as her. Her tests are the easiest so those are your chance to help recover lost points, they're open book as long as you kept up with the reading you should be fine. Would take again :)
Prof. Pires is an excellent teacher but grades horribly! She really wants things written a certain way - her way, not yours, even if you speak to her one-on-one and ask her exactly what she wants. She's really a control freak. Tests are very easy; opened book, multiple choice. NO, I WOULD NOT take her again! Honestly, I'm so thankful it's over.
Attendance is MANDATORY for class lectures. Each classwork assignment is only 5 points but they do add up! You MUST bring the book to all class lectures or she deducts point from classwork. The exams are open book, pretty easy. There are very few homework assignments but she is a very tough grader. Very few extra credit opportunities.
Professor Pires is very organized. She will expect students to think critical, read the Textbook, online lectures and understand her point of view. There is a total of 5 assignments. If you find yourself struggling,I would highly suggest that you go and see a tutor. Her tutor. The exams are easy, open book. Overall, she is an excellent Professor.
Show up to class for class participation activities (easy pts), email rough draft of all 5 assignments (gives great feedback), and see her supplemental instructor- YOU WILL PASS! Keep up with readings/online lectures and open book exams are EASY! Critical thinking is a must. Overall, your grade will reflect the effort put forth into the semester.
My first online class with her was rather pleasurable and enjoyable. Soc 171 criminal deviance was almost as if I had rubbed her the wrong way. No matter how I worded my responses they were never good enough. Even when I did research to back up my response she gave me low points, even when I used the tragedy at my work on December 2 15 low grade
I took this course online and so I expected a lot of reading and weekly participation to record attendance. The grading criteria were not completely clear at the beginning of the summer session and she is a tough grader. Once you follow her rules to a "T" it made it easer but it was a process of trial and error initially.
I took Mrs, Pires for Sociology 130. The course was online and I loved it. Summer classes, move at a much faster pace so keeping up with the readings should be on top of the list. Her test weren't difficult just make sure to read every chapter. Pires is very responsive when it comes to questions regarding assigments. She will email within mintues.
I've taken this professor for three courses and with good reason. Definitely assigns though provoking assignments and give very clear grading criteria. If you do all of the work you should have no problem getting an A. Also gives you many chances for extra credit.
I just want to say Pires is an amazing teacher. So far, I have taken Socio 100, 130, 110 with her. Socio 1130 & 110 I took online if You don't like to read I don't recommend taking those classes online. Pires provides study guides for each exam and asnwers to emails on time. She is very clear on what she is looking for in her responses assignments
Very thorough. Detailed feedback. You will work hard or you won't pass.
I took professor Pires for Soc100 and I look forward in taking her for my other sociology classes. Lectures are easy to follow with the chapter outlines she gives, in class activities are easy points to get. She is very specific about the assignments and what she expects. Test are easy and she gives extra credit. She is awesome!!!
She's a really nice teacher who makes the subject easy to understand. Uses an affordable book. There are three test, she gives you a study guide for all of them. Easy test and homework.
I had Professor Pries for social problems online . As long as you study for quizzes and be sure to complete the discussions on time, her class is wonderful! She sends reminders each week of when the discussion is due and you don't feel alone like in some other online classes because she is very interactive. & I didn't have to buy a textbook!
As long as you go home and read and have time to study/interpret the material basically on your own you will get a decent grades. She is really good about reminding for due dates, discussions are interesting but sometimes you have to wait till the day of to get the interesting questions. Class workeasy points. Must show up to 99% of the classes.
Her grading criteria was not clear in the beginning of the semester. You have to take a loss the first week of assignments because that's when she leaves feedback on your failures and says what she truly expects from you. Even then, some comments left on assignments are too vague to even understand and take constructive criticism from.
. Just finished her SOC 150 for fall17. Shes really chill.. and she gives clear instructions on what chapters for each week . When i had her, she assigned and would post everything you need to do for the two weeks period for all the assignments, quizzes, and exam. Shes very organized in her modules or assignments.. I would take her class again.
Professor Pires is an inspirational person she has concurred a lot in her life and she is a great Professor. When I took her class I thought it was going to be boring but it was quite interesting and easy. She grades not too tough as long as you put in the work. She is very sweet and understanding. I would recommend taking her!
Professor Pires is very organized and has a set schedule of when her assignments and modules will become available, which makes it easy to get ahead or fall behind. I loved her class very much, even though it was online she made it clear she was accessible on-campus as well as provided tutoring information. Her rubrics stay the same and are clear.
Excellent Professor
She makes classes very interesting. Is very organized, get grade back within the same mayor next when something is due. She check your work before turning it in. Always give good feedback, gives you current grade after every test. Very good professor, I am taking two more of her classes.
Professor Pires is a well organized professor and gives great feedback on your assignments. She provided a free E book which I recommend you read to get a good grade on exams. She's a bit of a tough grader, but she really cares about what she does and wants her students to succeed in everything they do
I've taken numerous online courses with this professor. Each one is a little different but there are similarities. You can expect to read as you will read nearly all of the books that are assigned. All assignments are given a week in advance (two weeks if you are on a shortened semester). Follow the syllabus to the T.
Professor Pires is very organized. The textbook is free so you don't need to purchase one. she is a little bit of tough grader but she will give you the feedback you need to complete the assignment. if you have questions just Ask! If you have a low grade either in test and assignment you will have an option for optional assignment/test.
Did three papers all 2 pages each. Then discussion posts and online quizzes and tests. I don't remember the schedule but I think it was just a discussion post and a quiz each week and then if there was a test that week you did the test along with the discussion post and quiz and vice versa with the papers. Got a B because I didn't do a few posts.
I took this class for online summer. She is very clear on assignments and grading. Participation matters. She gives extra credit if you want it and drops the lowest test score. I received a C but only because I didnt correctly do the first 2 discussion assignments but I would highly recommend her.
Professor Pires is tough but you can tell she loves her job and wants to see students succeed.
Professor Pires was very difficult she is very tough on grading I did everything she asked and still received a low score. I think when doing the assignments she expects you to answer each question as if she was answering them. If you need to take Sociology Introduction to Crime I recommend finding another professor.
I truly enjoyed professor Pires. I took her for Marriage and Family, Soc 130. She sets clear expectations and is very accessible to help. The more you apply yourself the better grade you will get
I had taken Prof. Romana-Pires' online course. I am usually fairly well spoken when it comes to writing papers, as well as being able to make valid points, arguments, comments etc. This was just a beginners course, but she had made the class seem like we were getting a Doctorates degree when she's grading papers. DO NOT TAKE!
Professor Pires was very hard to please however I could tell she does care about the students. She sometimes comes across very condescending. I like her as a person but not as a professor.
Each week you will have chapter reading, a test, and a discussion board with 2 comments. (Make sure you follow ALL directions), otherwise grading will be tough. Good reading material and interesting personal reflection discussions. References and citations need to be on point in this class. APA format.
Toughest class I have taken so far. Her discussions seem simple, but she wants you to cite your sources multiple times, like 4 or 5 in a 150 word assignment. Tests are extremely tough so make sure you read and re-read. Do not take her for summer if you are taking another class
She was an easy going professor, really made the class interesting with her lectures. Every exam was online but timed and the final were take home questions. Pay attention and complete the group assignments almost everyday and you'll pass. Textbook online.
Absolutely loved this Professor. By far the EASIEST class Ive taken. I always looked forward to this class. Tests were easy, papers were easy. Very engaging lectures.
i could say that she is a great professor, she expect to do it right. or else she will not give you full credit. she give you feed back /comment in all your worksheet activity & discussion post. at the end of the week she does offer( extra credit 18 points) hopefully my C+ goes to B by the end of this semester spring 2020 .
I got an A in this course, but Mrs. Pires definitely made me work for it. I enjoyed her lectures, but for a 100 course, I think it was a bit too challenging. If writing isn't your strongest subject, you may find this course difficult. She is a hard grader on writing! However I learned a lot. Textbook (online available) and attendance are requried!
good professor, allows extra credit or redos at the end of the semester, have taken her twice now!
She is really nice and caring. She is a tough grader for discussions because she has specific guidelines you need to meet. She gives extra credit that you need to turn in by the end of the semester, pretty easy. Kinda difficult for a introduction class, but just do what you need to do and you'll get an A.
I took her online course and it was a pretty easy homework layout. However, if English/writing is not your strong suit I wouldn't take her. She is a very tough grader. She is very specific on what she wants and is a picky grader.
If you're not a first gen and don't seem to have a minority background, she hates you and will give you low grades. She's very unnecessarily nit picky about fulfilling each specific requirement in her writing assignments and will take off a lot of points even if you did what she literally asked. She tries to act caring and helpful, but she's fake
Professor Pires is very organized and clear on all lectures, assignments, and modules. Making the course very helpful for due dates. Provides great feedback on all graded assignments, allowing late extensions on all work. Will message you directly if an assignment is not turned in on time, ensuring the student is doing well.
The professor gives a lot of assignments that a student cannot understand. she is also a very hard grader and it is hard to get good grades in her class.
All her assignments are the same and she grades though i didn't like her style at all no late work accepted and will get half points even for a couple minutes late homework is due early lots of works not enough time for a full time student to even finish.
I took a summer class it was definitely fast. Lost of reading and writing but Prof. Pires is great and answering all your questions and gives prompt feedback. Would definitely take her again.
The work wasn't too bad but the professor can be disrespectful. I wasn't active daily and when I reached out for help I was lectured about how irresponsible I am and almost me dropped from the class. Once she explained everything the assignments weren't bad, but they can get really confusing. I would recommend a different professor if available.
I enjoyed taking this class and genuinely found the lectures interesting. Attending class is mandatory. I love the feedback she gave me on my papers. The papers we had to write about were engaging so it was really easy to write. I found the late courtesy extension and reminders were so helpful. Her grading is understandable, didn't seem harsh to me.
If you're taking Professor Pires' class I hope you have no other classes. The amount of time you need to read all the material, do the exercises, make the charts, take the quizzes, prepare for the exams, and keep up with the discussions and essays is enough to keep a Starbucks in business. Is it do-able? Yes. Just as long as you love sociology.
I took this class in Spring 2025 and felt my work was graded unfairly. I was flagged for AI use even though the writing was authentically mine. The self-check tool provided was unreliable, flagging original content. The professor relies solely on AI detection and doesn't consider student input. Be cautious—this could impact your grade.
I took this class in Spring 2025 and felt my work was graded unfairly. I was flagged for AI use even though the writing was authentically mine. Professor Romana Pires made sociology come to life, even though it didn't always feel like she as there. That may have been because the course was so well laid out she didn't have to be constantly holding your hand. I got a lot out of the class and ma glad I took it though sociology isn't my favorite subject. I think i like cats more than people!!!
I like this class, but I feel like I have to “dumb down” my writing to avoid getting flagged for AI. I was flagged on a paper that was my own original work, which was frustrating because I put so much effort into it. There needs to be a more accurate way to track potential AI use so students who submit their own work aren't unfairly penalized.
I just want to say I didn't really like the class and I dislike very much that Professor Romana Pires relies only on a AI tool she uses which isn't reliable for grading and I would say it's very unfair to the students that use their own original writing get flagged for AI when it wasn't even used and no I would not want to take her class again.
This teacher was not clear on her expectations as far as the responses to class mates. The test were difficult ! She used pertantages in the test question and the test effects your grade. Lots of reading chapters. Homework was mostly responses to class mates but if you stay on top of your reading and note taking you can pass. She's a tough grader.
Does a lot of writing assignments, and quizzes based of what you read. I struggled with the wriitng portion. Overall good class somwhat.
She's a great professor, offers help whenever needed. Multiple chances to make up past grades, and extra credit assignments. She's patient and understanding. You can't really fail her class unless you're actively trying to fail.
If you want to fail, then you will. I had a rough start at the beginning of the semester, I still passed with a B. She made good study guides; all test material is right out of the readings. I did very well, original work, never got flagged, but she is a harsh grader and seemed to want specific things. Gives you a chance to turn work in late.
Her lectures are insightful, and they are amazing explanations of sociology. She always offers help, and she checks in on you every week to make sure you are doing ok. There is a lot of reading. Study guides are very clear and helpful. Tests are open note, but don't let that trick you. A lot of extra credit too. P.S. don't be late to her class...
I took 2 classes of her already and did really well in this one (Family Sociology) She made good study guides; all test material is right out of the readings. Do not save the work for last minute, It is best to do little by little to get it turned in on time. At the end, she gives extra credit to help or change other assignment grades.
