This guy is the worst friggin' prof I've ever had. Drop his class now.
Run, Run far away as fast as you can. You will fail....

Marks essays very hard. Rest of class is easy though. No grammar tests
If Romuald got ahold of Tolkien's rotting corpse, he'd keep it in his freezer and ravage it tri-weekly. Can't believe he has a PhD.
A little bit quirky, in a good way. Unintentionally cool hair. Really knows his Shakespeare and Tolkien. Very kind and helpful when you go talk to him. The only reason people cannot handle him is that he expects you to work and has very high standards.
Dr. Lakowski is generous in sharing a very deep and meaningful understanding of literature. IF you really care to learn something about Shakespeare, Tolkien, or Children's Literature this professor is a MUST.
Be prepared to work hard, or go drop the course. Mention 'Tolkien' and be prepared for a lecture on what a bad man Peter Jackson is. Pretty easy lecture; assignments and exams are pretty tough.

There was nothing better first thing in the morning to see his tiny eyes lighten up at the mention of a poker up the ass, and to hear his fake accent whisper tales of growing up in an all boy's school.
This man is not a good teacher. He is prejudiced and mean-hearted. Going to him for help is a waste of time, unless you enjoy being insulted.
The WORST Prof ever. Quizzes you BEFORE he teaches you the subject matter. Basically only rereads plays to you in class. A very bright man, knows what he's talking about but very rude and unapproachable.
Unhelpful, difficult to understand, has a predilection with genitalia in literature, uses inappropriate language, makes suggestive comments to the class, grades are based on his personal relationship with the student.
Not a bad teacher. Often unclear, but not difficult to gain clarity. If you really want help, you must be open to suggestion. He explains himself well if you go see him, but only if you really want to hear it. He can sense if you just want to argue or don't really care.
RUN...... Dudes and Dudettes dropit well you have the chance. hard marker and unwilling to see any other way but his..
One word: Lazy, he narrows down essay topics of at least 8 pages to 4 for the sake of less marking time, then grades you based on content (quotes etc.). Dont take this proff if you don't have to. Extremely unopen to student opinions and suggestions. Has an undeniable superiority complex.
CRAP!!
Amazing. One of the best profs I've ever had. My writing skills are definitly better because of his help. Sometimes a little unclear, but if you go to talk to him and ask him, he's always willing to explain. He's absolutly brilliant and makes the papers and quizzes a challenge (rather than too easy).
Look past the British slob and huge glasses and you will see one heck of a smart guy. He is a very demanding prof. and you will learn if you want to. If you have a serious question, relate it to Tolkin and he will give you an answer in a round about way...you just have to listen. good prof.
First impression was not good, but turned out to be a great prof. in the end. Lectures were mostly plot summaries of material, essay topics were challenging/interesting. Don't mention Peter Jackson, haha! or Walt Disney! Has lots of knowledge and is fun once you get past his somewhat grumpy demeanor.
semms to be an odd character but ifhe see syou are willing to work then he is willing to helpyou, my suggestion is go to him with your papers every step of the way and you will do well
Very intelligent professor, if you are willing to put in the effort, you can get a good mark
Once past the british demeanor he is a fantastic prof. Learned more from him then any other prof I had. Total Tolkien geek so relate questions to Lord of the Rings and your in
Rather than teach he summarizes the works we have already read on our own time and fails to answer any questions without somehow relating it to Tolkien.
Relates EVERYTHING to Tolkien, and is extremely set in his ways, grammar-wise. Soft-spoken, and really hard to hear, so if you hate soft-speakers, GET OUT NOW!
The worst English Prof ever! really! The guy doesn't specify what he wants in his assignments. His marking is unfair as well. I have never fallen asleep in any class before but in his, I just can't stay awake! Bad Bad prof. Get out of this guy's class if you have him!
I really enjoy his class, I think he is very helpful, you do have to work hard here but you should be working hard anyways, college is not easy, very good proffessor
I did not take this class because I wanted to but he did not make it any easier. He is very unclear and unhelpful as well as a very unfair marker. He always gives unfair tests on material that nobody would know. If you are in this class get out before it is too late.
AWKWARD!!!!!!!!!
worst teacher i've ever had. off topic. doesn't teach. pointless class. everyone's marks have dropped 15% - 20%. terrible marker. bad assignments. unclear and assignments are inconsistent with what any other english prof teaches.
ATE CELERY DURING FINAL EXAM. This man is the worst teacher ever... I wrote to the faculty and they did nothing. Get out of this class if you can! Reminds me of the mole from the wind in the willows
Dr Lakowski is a good prof, but you have to be willing to work hard and keep on top of your readings. If you are not interested becoming an english major, you may want to find another class. If you are an english major, he will prepare you for what you will encounter in later courses. A's are possible in his class, if you are willing to work.
Worst. Teacher. Ever. If you are signed up for his class get out, even if it means taking an 8:00 class, you won't regret it. You're not even allowed to chew gum in his class...
If you do not want to continue taking english after first year, DO NOT GO IN THIS CLASS. The only reason I show up for class is because he takes attendance, other than that, I use class time to catch up on sleep...
Romuald has much knowledge but unfortunately does not share it easily or with charisma with his students. Preparation for paper-writing was very good but not because of his assistance or advice, rather because I would not allow myself to get less than a B in the course. Unclear lecturing with a lot of summarizing instead of class discussion. Whe
He seems impersonal at first, but is very willing to help if you approach him outside of class. Work hard, and you'll do well. His 100-level classes are excellent preparation for an English major.
This class is going to kill me. I've never been so bored learning something before. I usually give 100% but this "teacher" makes me want to do less than average. Just pass and get out. Cut ur losses and run. He snaps on ppl for moving or typing or writing when he thinks u shouldn't be. Demands respect but won't respect u thats for sure.
oh my word, I wish I had found this site before I got stuck in this class. I would have totally dropped! Now i'm stuck in it ALL YEAR! This prof is indeed the worst ever. He is in dire need of retire. Obviously doesn't care whether we learn or not, is there purely because he has to be. (and so he can flirt with his teachers pet).
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS! If you think that by working hard in this class you will get the mark you deserve YOU ARE WRONG! He marks based on personal feelings towards the student! This is no Joke… This is one year of your life you spend hating English!
Most incompetent teacher I have ever encountered. Is unclear, rushes through lectures, is rude and unhelpful. Makes his students feel stupid. Is strict about class attendance, then does nothing but confuse us when we're there. Extremely, EXTREMELY hard marker and does not specify what he wants from his assignments. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!
Worst teacher ever. I had an A in english 101, he flat out told me I should not be taking English. He does not specify what he wants, his criticism is anything but constructive. Cannot remember his students names and he takes attendence everyday! my class had maybe 15 students.
After telling us what to read at home, we'd get to class, and he'd just read it back to us, without analyzing it or discussing it. If you ask a question, he either won't answer, or give you an answer that doesn't address the question. I'm in English again this year, and seeing the difference is amazing. GET OUT WHILE YOU STILL CAN!!!
Wow. This man shouldn't teach. Find him a library with dictionaries and Tolkien and no human contact. It's not that hard to remember the names of 15 students that you spend 3 hours a week with and whom you recite their names for attendance EVERY SINGLE CLASS. He regurgitates text to a select few and makes everyone else feel that they don't exis
To be fair, Dr. Lakowski is not that bad. He does not tolerate mediocrity, and has high expectations for his students. Everytime I went to his office, he was more than helpful. True, his lecture style could use some work (a lot of reading from the text and no class discussion), but I am grateful for these professors that push you to excel.
Was an extremely hard class to attend. He was rude and never explained the material. All he did was read the stories to us... hello we're old enough to read. Wore the same sweater every day (ok maybe thats not relevant but it was annoying) Amazingly I passed but it took an insane amount of effort to do so. I would not recomend this class.
Dr. Lakowski is a tough marker, but he prepares students in the long run. If you want to challenge yourself and reach the next level...take his class. College wasn't meant to be easy and it require a lot of hard work and dedication on your part. Be warned: one of the toughest classes I have had yet.
He was one of my fav profs. He made class interesting and we were never really bored. Attendance is mandatory, his papers are difficult (but very clear in their outline), his door is always open, you need to participate, and you need to study your butt off in order to do well. This may sound hard but that's what college is supposed be like.
Worst teacher I've ever had. Get out while you can. Class is horribly boring, he has no interest in his students. Unfriendly and unapproachable. Tells you to read stories and then simply reads them back in class. No analysis or useful anything at all. Favours students and his feedback on papers is horrible to nonexistent.
DON'T DO IT! This man made me switch from an English to a Sociology major! His classes made me want to stab myself through the eye with a pen to stop the mind-numbing boredom. I could actually feel my brain stagnating. WORST PROF EVER.
This man is miserable. Do not take this class. He is NOT fair. The marks you get are clearly a reflection on his personal opinion of you. DO NOT miss any class, make sure you suck up, and mention Tolkien every chance you get, and you may pass with a decent mark. His class was by far the most horrid experience of my college education.
He prepares you for what college is actually like. He marks essays very hard and will hold you to a personal standard, not based on others. So if you start off with a weak essay and then the next one is better.. your mark will significantly improve. He has a very dry sense of humour but I think he wants his students to do well and be prepared.
We are expected to read from the text on our own before class, which is normal, but all we do in class is read the plays, going over aspects of the plot, historical elements and a small amount of symbolism. I thought that this class was going to give me a deeper understanding of Shakespeare's work but instead I'm just going to keep the textbook.
I read his ratings before taking two classes with him but I decided to give them a try anyways. BIG MISTAKE. If you have him as a prof GET OUT OF THE CLASS. All you do is read for yourself..the class is absolutely useless and boring. Big waste of time and money.
first of all, English 203 is HARD. There's a lot of material to cover, and a lot of it will be difficult if you do not know another language or have taken linguistics. Dr. Lakowski has quizzes, which definitely boost your mark if you've studied and done your homework, but will decimate your mark if you haven't. I loved Dr. Lakowski's class.
Get out as soon as you can. He is boring, and has absolutely no teaching style. You read the play at home, write the quiz and then read the play in class. I will give him credit that if you do have a question he will help you, and does provide good advice. Just in class you really do want to stab yourself in the eye with your pen
Just about impossible to please, even more impossible to understand. Very negative. Helpful outside the classroom, but good luck getting a word in edgewise during class. Hope you're a self-directed learner because there's very little lecture and no class discussion.
RUN FOR YOUR LIFE! Honestly, if you can escape this class, do it! His group of favourites is very small so chances are good that you'll wind up outside in the cold with him. Do your homework and feign respect for him and he'll love you to bits!
He is a hard marker and i will admit, he does have favourites. However, his favourites are not based on luck. He likes it if you come to class on time, dont talk when he is talking, NEVER chew gun, and contribute in class. He wont mark someones essay harder if he doesnt like them. He marks based on improvement. Knows his stuff!
During the first week, he made his high expectations very clear. A little tough love. It did not take long to realize that he is a very helpful and caring professor. He is accommodating with assignments and flexible if you need help. He has rules in class, but they are to make class a better environmnet for everyone. He is a wonderful professor!
I've always found it some what easier to do good at a course when I have work to look at that has been marked already. Lakowski tends to mark things at this own pace. Which makes me wonder what it is he is doing in the mean time. He is also very hard to hear durning class and loves to slam the door whenever he enters the room. he also scares me
Very difficult to understand, mumbles and tends to go on tangents rather then directly answer questions. Rude and condescending in general. He reads aloud from the text rather then teaching.
so so boring
Pretty boring class but hey,its english. you wont really learn much from class other than what you need to know on the grammar quizzes. Its not an easy class, but it could be harder. He never took off late marks if you gave him any excuse and was a pretty nice guy. Helpful outside of class.
This guy is a hard marker and he doesn't really tell you what you need to know. Overall I think he's a bad teacher who is very self-centered about his "work" outside of teaching. Stay away from this guy.
This man hates every student in his class besides his favored few. He has more rules than any other teacher. Once lectured a girl in my class for 15 min because she brought in her laptop, he's banned them from his class. Makes jokes that only he finds funny and answers questions in cryptic riddles. Skipped most classes, and I like english...
..no gum. no laptops. no food. no talking. Welcome to death. Cant usually understand him. he mumbles way to much and gets off topic. laughs at his own jokes kinda guy. he will literally stop everything he is doing to tell you to take the gum out and throw it away.Hard marker. hard class. boring. always late to class. looked like he just woke up.Joy
OK I'll be honest. If you like English and/or are good at it (like I am), you will get through this class and get a good mark without really breaking a sweat. I personally find his classes boring and we don't really go too in-depth with the texts/poems. If you struggle, though, you'll probably be turned off English if you have him, which is a shame
Ok, so he's quite tough on his class rules and expectations but who cares, you're only in class for an hour every other day. He mumbles a lot and pretty much tells you exactly what the text means so there is not much discussion. Essays are a easy, put some effort in and you'll do fine. Out of class though he is very approachable if you need help!
Worst teacher i've had in my 3 yrs at grant mac. terrible social skills, hard to understand and way too many rules. treats students like elementary. no gum, no laptops, no hats, definitely does not make college experience a good one. by the 3rd week about 6-10 students dropped it already. terrible life choice to stay in that class.
Dr. Lakowski was, by far, the worst prof I've ever had the displeasure of taking a course from. He plays favourites in the class and I found him to be exceptionally rude and unapproachable. I would recommend avoiding him, especially if you are interested in English courses! He discouraged several people from continuing on with their English studies
His "R's" and "V's" look identical on the board when he writes. He speaks way too fast and mumbles all his words. This man hates all technology and any criticism that mocks J.J.R Tolkien. Dr. Lakowski is the worst prof in Grant Mac, and I am currently transferring out of Grant Mac due to this Prof.
He tests to make sure you have read the material - and those quizzes can be brutal if you haven't read the material. He tells you exactly what he wants for papers and rewards those who work hard. Accepted feedback on the midterm and modified the final accordingly. Work hard and you will be rewarded. Love how he loves Shakespeare.
Not my favourite prof. Nice enough guy but I think he has trouble getting his point across sometimes. He's a pretty easy marker, but class attendance is mandatory, as well as doing all your readings ahead of time. His very strict and has a lot of "policies".
Not a good teacher, mumbles a lot, does not know how to get a point across. Very rude and impolite and isn't very helpful out of class. I would not recommend this professor at all.
i didnt know teachers this bad were aloud to teach at such a high level. Not only is he extremely rude but he has tons of "policies" in his class and has zero problem pointing you out in the middle of lectures to enforce them. You will be expected to read all books prior, but dont expect any annotating or explanation, laziest teacher in the world.
If you can avoid this professor do I was enrolled in his class for one day and I switched out as soon as I got home. He has ridiculous rules in the class like no laptops (even for notes)and expects a doctors note even if you miss a lecture. I loathed him by the time i walked out the door. He is rude, boring and flat out the worst prof I have had.
During the first week, he made his high expectations very clear. A little tough love. It did not take long to realize that he is a very helpful professor. He is accommodating with assignments and flexible if you need help. He has rules in class, but they are to make class a better environment for everyone. Just don't be moron, do your work.
He seems like a lovely person but teaching is not his calling
Lakowski is a beaut.
He's a good prof. Knows his stuff. As long as you care about the course, he is kind and gentle when you have troubles. Doesn't mark THAT hard, just doesn't pander to bad students and inflate grades (tho easy As would be nice lol). I'm pretty sure many of the hate reviews below are from a single person who shouldn't even be on here rating profs...
Sincerely a fantastic class. A lot of people have a hard time with him as a teacher but if you just follow his rules you is great! He isn't super demanding with coursework and is really great at helping outside of class. He is a really misunderstood prof. I found him to be really, really nice. Takes the time to say hi to me every time he sees me.
Hated the class. An incredible amount of policies: no food, no laptops or cellphones or technology in general, no noise, if you're late you get marked absent, if you have an unexcused absent he counts it against you, etc. Had to read the novels and then get tested on them without discussing anything. He was not clear on what he wanted. Do not take
Rarely explains imagery or helps us understand the plays better. Plays favourites a lot and tends to be difficult to understand. It was a hard class to go to, despite the fact I'm and English major and Shakespeare is my passion.
While Lakowski knows what he's teaching, it's the way he goes about teaching it that will most likely become a detriment to people who don't know HOW he teaches. His papers are long with quotation requirements. I'd advise that you don't take his class if you're not prepared to work hard.
I found the material (literature in the middle ages) pretty easy, but you needed a working knowledge of Christian myth. Not very helpful, rarely explains, strange rules. Would not recommend.
Has multiple long, difficult, and somewhat uninteresting texts that must be read faster than possible. Gives few topics to choose from for essays, which have a high mandatory quote minimum. Essays have a heavy grade weight. Reads the texts or summarizes it instead of discusses, leads to a dry and boring class. Talks a lot without making a point.
Avoid his class. He mumbles nonsense through his lectures, and is rarely focused on course content. Does not give constructive feedback. Seems like a nice enough guy, just an awful English professor. His assignment sheets have spelling and grammatical errors in them (seriously). Don't waste your time with this one.
not very helpful, makes attendance mandatory even if you're not doing anything useful in class other than going over a novel that he had already assigned for reading. won't let you use computers unless given special notice, no food, no talking. Rambles on about the same stuff, often repeating himself about useless information. do not take.
Attendance is required--it makes up for about 20% (including quizzes and writing exercises). Likes to spend the majority of class time reading the plays out loud. Also has extremely specific requirements for papers (like having to go to U of A library for books--no online sources).
I found his lectures to be very seldom helpful and his policies are head-scratchers (physical journals required?). If you have an engaged class he is willing to amend certain aspects of his syllabus and is extremely helpful if you seek him out. He is relatively easy marker and his quizzes/tests are a piece of cake if you read the plays.
Loved this prof! If you don't want to learn literature from a brilliant instructor, who is passionate about his craft, pick someone else. Yes he's quirky and expects participation, but if you can handle that it's an easy A. Also extremely accommodating and old school. Imagine no Facebook in class, careful you might learn something.
If you looked him up because you're on the fence about this class, don't say "eh can't be that bad" and take it anyway. Don't make my mistake. This class sucked out any passion I had for the renaissance and fed it back to me in the form of monotonous, sand-papery drivel. Goes on pointless tangents and can't be deciphered through the mumbling.
He is a tough prof and doesn't make a great first impression, but as long as you follow his rules and are respectful, you'll have an easier time. He doesn't allow any computers and doesn't use blackboard. He is very passionate and interested what he teaches. You're expected to read material before class, there were quizzes and two term papers.
This teacher is very boring. He does not give clear instructions. I did not learn anything new in the class. He is not a very good teacher at all. Would not recommend at all. Very strict.
He is an awesome person, sit close to the front if you can. He does mumble and often repeats himself, but if you are unclear about anything just talk to him. He knows A LOT, essays are straight forward and he basically gives you all the answers to essays. Actually read the text and you do fine. Show up!
This class is based off mandatory attendance and ability to stay awake. He is a nice professor and is very smart. However, his lectures do not stick to the topics and he does not use any online site to post marks. He is an English professor so he does expect well-written papers but overall this class is a fairly easy class.
No blackboard, terrible communication and way to hard. Would never take again.
Lakowski has a really weird teaching style but he's awesome. He'll ramble on for an hour and just talk about the most interesting stuff that has nothing to do with English. Of the lecture time I imagine about 75% is spent on tangents. If you're not into that sort of thing don't bother: the lack of information and clarity will drive you nuts.
If you like literature you might enjoy him, but if you don't enjoy it, do not take it with this prof. Very boring lectures where he usually goes off on tangents the whole time, doesn't use blackboard, and is very unclear about grading criteria for essays.
Okay, so I've taken two classes with him. The first class was renaissance literature, and it was easy. He was repetitive and quirky, but alright. Now I'm taking Shakespeare with him and he is the worst professor I have ever had. The class is not difficult, but he is hypocritical, defensive, condescending, and does not actually teach us anything.
very condescending and rude to students. He expects you to speak clearly yet he mumbles so badly you can barely understand him. He was never prepared and took attendance every class. He didn't teach us, and was more focused on his personal life than my education. One of the worst profs I have had! pop quiz content was irrelevant to the course.
By far the worst prof Ive had. His lectures are unorganized and rarely on topic and he mumbles and is hard to understand when he is on topic. The feedback on the essays were vague and not helpful and a large portion of your mark depends on attendance.
worst teacher i ever had i would highly suggest staying clear of this guy. not allowed to use any technology and if you want to write notes on your computer, you have to show him your notes after class or he will ask you to show him in the middle of class. makes you read out loud ( not allowed to pass) and mumbles when he talks. good luck !
Worst professor I've ever had. I only lasted 2 classes before dropping it. If you have this prof DROP THE CLASS. I could not understand what he was saying, no electronics, he takes attendance everyday, he makes us take turns reading out loud, he mumbles and he is very rude. I thought the reviews were bad on here but he is even worse in person.
He had a niche topic that he knew very well. As long as you were committed to learning about the topic, you did well.
Worst prof I have ever had. Is not accommodating at all.
Lakowski is truly "the pits" when it comes to Professors in the English Department. Where do I begin? Lectures are utterly useless as no new information is introduced, plays are nonsensically read aloud, and attendance is mandatory. Lakowski single-handedly made Shakespeare's plays passionless with his monotone mumbling. I would strongly avoid him.
This isn't the kind of class that you sign up for, go on your phone, do minimal work and pass. You need to want to learn in order to succeed in this class. I took this class last semester and I often still think about how much I enjoyed it, very respectable teacher.
Currently taking his online class. There are no lectures at all. Synchronous or asynchronous. Assigns us an essay with no clear criteria other than the main purpose of what our essay will be about. Received an announcement/reminder two days before the deadline on what he expects to see on the essay, which clarified some things but not enough.
Answered his cell phone during class, made in-person attendance mandatory during pandemic, ridiculed us for wearing masks, straight up refused to give us any feedback on our work. Emailed us DURING Reading Week with another assignment due that week. Did not make one single effort to engage students. It's clear he has zero respect for his students.
Very understanding. Great teacher even though class is being taught online. He is understanding of students needs of they are going through health conditions, mentally or physically... especially during a pandemic. Great prof and would take his class again.
Made us unmask to read aloud during a pandemic. Talked about a study claiming masks were carcinogenic. Talks like he has a mouth full of peanut butter. Gave no feedback on any of my essays. Said the necklines of women in the renaissance were meant to advertise their wares if they were single. Could go on but the word count is limited.
DO NOT take this class unless you're willing to read multiple hundred paged books. Only marked on 3 essays and the final. No lectures, contacts you once a month to tell you what to do, posts essay topics one week before they are due. Worst teacher I've ever had.
He laughed at me during the final when he noticed I got a wrist cramp, and told me I pronounced my name wrong every class, but he was very memorable. WOULD take this class again, solely for the experience.
Mr. Lakowski is a really unique man one of my favourite profs. His lectures consisted heavily of reading aloud & asking questions after. By no means fast paced, but the degree to which he loved old poetry really shone through. For those who didn't do the readings it would be tedious, but despite his monotone voice, he was extremely passionate.
Professor Lakowski is very passionate about his teachings, especially poetry. You can tell he really loves Lord of the Rings. Yes he mumbles a bit, but if you sit closer to the front it's not a problem. If you don't like English and are just here for an easy mark, this class isn't for you.
AVOID THIS PROF! hard to understand, mumbles often, no PowerPoint to follow and write notes. I took his class in the 2023 Fall term in English 104. 'Narrative across media' the Prof was biased and mentions of the films the prof changed the topic quickly and says "yeah" then ignores then hates on the films. I do not recommend this Prof for this Engl
Self-study with spaced repetition worked for me, though others may prefer lectures. Watching LOTR films helps. The professor has expertise beyond English (math/physics/programming), which isn't obvious. Despite seeming dry initially, engagement makes it better. Course is challenging but manageable if you're an experienced reader.
Lakowski's class is a wild ride - he loves to go on captivating tangents, which can be a blessing or a curse. If you engage with his unique teaching style, you'll find the material fascinating. Unstuck ai and the free textbook are great study tools. Attendance is a must.
Drop it -Late to first class with a poor excuse. Unprofessional, just apologize for being late and start the class -"I know when you're using AI and I don't need to prove it" is very condescending and rude -reading the same passage (~2 paragraphs in length) once by him and 3-4x (a usual amount) by the students. In class.... Why?? Waste of time
This professor was one of the least effective instructors I have experienced. Quizzes consisted of handwritten questions out of 30, which often felt unclear and inconsistent. Little consideration was given to student athletes; missing a test or in-class assignment due to commitments resulted in an automatic zero. For a first-year course, awful prof
