I have always hated chem, but Im not gonna lie, even though this is my earliest class all week I am always excited for it. His lectures are interesting, he explains things well, and he really does give you everything you need to succeed. Chem is my favorite class now
Briggs is the best teacher ever. Everything he writes on the board, the notes, is what's on the test. Read your notes and if you do not understand anything go in to him. 4 exams (25 mult choice) & 1 final (50 mult choice). The test is mostly concepts so if you are okay at concepts, I'm not the best, you'll do great. Got an A+ in the class.
Best chemistry teacher ever! The test are a little rough but it is chemistry after all.
Great Professor that really knows his chemistry. He teaches very well and in a way that you understand. Writes everything on the white board for you to take notes. Just go to class, take notes and study hard before the tests and you will be fine.
Briggs is the best teacher I've ever had. He gives you all the information you'll ever need for the class! Study for tests using the practice exams and you'll be fine. He plays videos before and during class and plays review games the lecture before a test. He writes the notes out on the board, so it's easy to keep up. TAKE HIM FOR CHEM 113!!!
Great teacher. Always tries to kept students' attention by showing videos and a joke every now and then. His lectures and notes are pretty clear, but don't think his class is easy, you will have to study.
The class is pretty easy as long as you study and do all your work. He posts old exams that are similar to the one you will take so as long as you know how to do everything on that one, you should be good for the test. Attendance isn't mandatory but he has lecture quizzes that can add up. He's really interesting and helpful.
Professor is very engaging and makes the material fun and interesting. Only complaint I really had was that he covered a lot of material quickly and didn't spend a lot of time clarifying it. He just covered it. You needed to read the text book and make sure you paid attention to your homework to really understand everything.
Great professor. Keeps lecture super interesting with lots of videos and demos and is really straightforward with the material. His tests are almost exactly the same every years definitely utilize the practice tests he gives you as they are old tests from previous years. Easy A!
He makes learning fun! Videos! Game show-like quizzes in class to win exam points. I was kinda so-so about chemistry, but I am really into it now!
He wakes you up with a funny video at the beginning to keep you focused, loves David Hasselhoff, and does game show quizzes before each test with extra points. He always brings up the test grades to create a normal average. Dr. Briggs is a great professor and I would definitely recommend him!
Briggs is simply the best. No surprise questions on the tests, all from the lecture. He even does game shows before tests where he gives out free exam questions. I have friend in cabirac's class and his tests are easier in my honest opinion. Take him for CHM 113, you will not regret it!
Absolutely fantastic teacher. Tests are very straightforward and he gives reviews and practice tests. His chemistry game shows (who wants to be a chemmillionare) are great and he always gives away free test questions through them. Made Chm 113 very easy but I learned so much from his class. Brilliant professor, highly recommend him.
Amazing professor. I ended up with an A- though.. only because I didn't give it my all until the final exam which saved my grade. Believe it or not, my highest test score was on the Final. Everything he teaches/lectures in class will be on the exam. So write good notes and do the practice exams and go over his study guides before the exam.
Briggs was one of the best professors I have had so far. Very easy to pay attention because he keeps lecture interesting. He is funny and always cracking jokes. He finds a way to make the confusing material easy to understand. I would HIGHLY recommend him!
He provided multiple opportunities to get a good grade. The tests were fair. There were in-class quizzes, but they were by group and he dropped the lowest two. Make sure to go to lecture because he asks one question on each test about a video or slide in his lecture. He kept lectures interesting by showing a lot of Bill Nye videos and demos.
Dr. Briggs was the best professor I had all semester! He is really funny and he always showed hilarious videos during class. He writes all the notes on the board and he goes over everything that will be on the tests. You still have to work to get a good grade, but overall is a just a great class!
I enjoyed having him so much that I had to hold back tears the last few classes. If only he taught Chem 116! From what I have heard and experienced, he is a better and more fair teacher than Cabirac. He makes class fun, and his humor is cheesy and shines in the game show reviews. Take Briggs, I promise that you will not regret it!
Professor Briggs is awesome. You can tell that he put a lot thought into making this class interesting and fun. He is funny and his staff is always available to help you if you have any questions. Professor Briggs+Chad's review+some hard work+David Hasselhoff=A.
This class with Briggs allowed me to learn a lot about chemistry, while I was not very good at chemistry in high school. He plays videos before class, is very clear, and writes on the white board. He plays a review game the class before a test which allows you to get an edge on the tests. I highly recommend taking Briggs section for CHM 113!
Dr. Briggs is an incredibly intelligent man who loves the subject he teaches. If you haven't had much experience with Chemistry, you will struggle in this class. Take all the practice tests and re-take the lecture quizzes before exams and you should do fairly well. The final is easy and should definitely boost your grade. Overall, it's a good class
Briggs was a wonderful teacher. He starts class off with random videos of pranks to get your attention, and makes each lecture very interesting, whether it be through the use of humor, demonstrations from Gary, or one of his review games. His enthusiasm makes the class very enjoyable. I would definitely recommend him.
the bottom line is that his the best professor you will ever study under
He tries to make class as exciting as possible with videos. Make sure to show up to class and do the lecture quizzes. The tests aren't that hard as long as you make sure to cover what's on the study guide. Really straight forward guy and a straight forward class.
Briggs was a great professor when it came to lecture. He kept things interesting and was always easy to understand. His tests are about average difficulty, as long as you study for a decent amount of time you should not be unsatisfied with your grade. Overall I would take another of his classes if I could.
I took this class because the CHM 101 teacher looked horrible, and I'm glad I did! The class was challenging for me but he was very helpful outside of class. Don't put off the homework, it is online and mastering chemistry can be a pain. Study hard for the exams! There is a curve usually but it's hard. 1-3 free exam questions per test! Fun class
As others have said, Dr. Briggs is an excellent professor. He provides you with all of the resources you need to succeed, but you will need to put in a fair bit of time to do well. I hadn't taken chemistry in 4 years when I took this class, so I was worried about passing, but I got a B+. I couldn't recommend him more.
Amazing teacher. There are no negatives. You will learn the material and he makes it really fun. If you're on the fence about taking his class, do it.
Best teacher I have ever had at ASU. Completely changed my outlook on chemistry and made me understand what was actually going on. Funniest and most creative teacher I have ever had. Makes a tough subject a little easier. Tests are pretty difficult, you are gonna have to work hard to get an A. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!!
Very funny teacher who really knows how to teach. He gets his point across well and rarely was he confusing.
Briggs is by far the best professor I have had so far at ASU. He takes the time to write his lectures on the board so that the students have time to write and understand. He really goes through the material and gives many ways to remember the material. I would recommend him to any Chem student!!!!!
Briggs a great teacher to have. He makes the class fun by showing videos, activities, and in class demonstrations. He was a great teacher and wished he taught CHM 116.
So far, he has been my best professor ever. Very clear and his lectures are interesting (you will see lots of cool demonstrations!). Must attend a majority of classes to earn lecture quiz points. If you come to class, pay attention and copy his notes, and start studying a day before the exams, you will most likely get an A. Sad he doesnt teach 116.
He is really intelligent and humorous. He just knows how to talk to a classroom of couple hundreds of students. He is a stud. Take his course and you won't regret. Oh I just make sure to attend those days that he gives lecture quizzes (you can get 100% on each one because the answers are given at the end of each class). I'm going to miss him.
Dr Briggs is a phenomenal man and professor. He genuinely cares about his students and was an enjoyment to learn from. I received a C+ but you definitely could get at least a B if you attend all recitations and labs and do the homework. Alright tests, not terrible.
If you belong in college, you'll pass chem without problems with this guy. Time and time again, the class average was extremely low, but if you give even the slightest bit of effort, you'll pass. A few hours of studying and taking the practice exam before each exam will get you B+ or higher.
I would recommend Briggs for CHM113. It's not an easy class if you're horrible in chemistry (like me) but it's manageable if you put an effort in studying. The class is extremely organized and Briggs makes the lectures mostly entertaining. I think the most important advice is TO START HOMEWORK EARLY.
Ron Briggs is not helpful at all.
Dr. Briggs is hands down the best teacher I have ever had, I definitely recommend him as he makes class so much fun even at 9 am. If you work hard it is easy to pull a good grade.
Briggs was a great professor. He's a really funny guy and can make you understand concepts with his humor. His test are tough but as long as you study and understand each chapter, you should do fine. He posts online practice exams that look like the test BUT are not the same so don't be fooled. Study hard but do not cram. It wont get you anywhere.
Super nice professor, patient and friendly to students. He make various kinds of activities including experiments by TA, and often take funny video show to make class very interesting. Also, the exams and homework are quite easy. It is super enjoyable to take his class. Love him.
Awesome professor! He writes the notes out on the board so its super easy to follow him and understand the chapters. You can tell he is truly passionate about his subject, and he does an amazing job making chemistry actually enjoyable.
Briggs is one of my favorite professors! He is very good at explaining the material and easy to follow. He makes lectures interesting and as long as you study and do the required work, it is easy to end up with a good grade in the course.
Amazing teacher. Makes class very interesting and entertaining. Tests are pretty easy and grading is very reasonable. My only complaint is that he isn't teaching CHM 116 next semester.
Dr. Briggs is one of the best professors. He is funny and awesome. Just do your best and you should be fine. Talk to him and he will help you. Good times!
Dr. Briggs was a great CHM113 teacher. He really is interested in the course material and teaches very clearly. His practice exams are extremely helpful and if you just study for the tests, you should do great in this class. The resurrection final is amazing!
Dr. Briggs is a great professor. He will always try his best to make learning fun. He is very clear when explaining new things and will almost always have examples to explain exactly what he is talking about. The class itself is not hard at all if you are one of those people that studies the material outside of class. I recommend him!
Great teacher. Although lectures can be boring at times, what can you expect with chemistry. He tries his best to make it interesting, and had more success at it than any other teacher i know who teaches the class. Recommend!
What a great professor! He really loves chemistry and you can tell. He tries to get his students to feel the same way by making it interesting. His tests aren't easy, but after studying a lot and using things like clutch prep, I was able to squeeze out an A. I highly recommend this guy! Take him if you can!
Dr. Briggs is a great professor he made his class fun and made sure students understood material. Look at his practice exams before test, they will help a lot.
Class was amusing and was pretty clear in his explanations.
Dr. B really knows his stuff and can communicate it well. Definitely requires work outside of class but he guides you along with what you need to know.
Great professor!! He was my first science professor and I couldn't have been in better hands. He goes slow in class, writes most of his notes on the board so you actually have time to write notes, and he has a great lecture voice. The class takes work but if you pay attention in lecture and do the work, you'll be fine!
Try to take Briggs if you have the option. He makes chemistry a little bit easier to understand. I am in 116 now and I really miss how Briggs gave handouts with the formulas and how to use them and all of his in class notes. Go to class because he gives lecture quizzes (and gives you the answers to them)
Briggs is pretty awesome as professors go, and he makes chemistry slightly more bearable! He is definitely one of the better chem professors at ASU and he does a good job of breaking up the lengthy lectures with videos, demonstrations, etc... But be warned that the exams can be very challenging and the online homework is extremely tedious!
Better be there or else it will be crazy for you
I love Briggs! His is so enthusiastic and always helping everyone. This class is difficult but he makes it fun.
Briggs is a really great professor! I hate chemistry but i never dreaded going to his lectures. This class is not an easy A, but Briggs is always available for help. I would recommend him to someone who struggles in chemistry.
Great guy. But you need to study to be successful in this class.
Briggs was an amazing professor and actually made chemistry fun! you better check your study habits though because if you don't study then you wont pass
Dr. Briggs was one of the best professors I have ever had! His lectures are extremely clear and very interesting. Briggs has a great sense of humor, he always starts the day with funny videos. If you miss his lectures though, you will not pass. He is an amazing teacher but his exams can be tough. I would recommend him to anyone!
This class was a lot of work. There's online homework due at the end of every unit but Dr. Briggs gives you everything you need to know in order to succeed. If you're willing to pay attention in class and work hard, you'll do well and learn a lot.
His tests are insane. Sometimes what you study won't exactly be equivalent to what is on the exams.
Dr. Briggs made me love chemistry again. Plenty of opportunities to get easy points, and grading scale is lowered (A- is at 88%). Tests are similar to practice exams, and gives out free exam questions in lecture before exam. Makes chemistry interesting and funny with videos and pop-culture references. Best Chem professor at ASU, take him.
The class is pretty tough but Briggs is there to help. You get a lot of points just by going to class. He always gives out a few free questions for each test, you just have to be at the lectures to get them. I would recommend you take him above the other CHM 113 professors.
Dr. Briggs is a brilliant professor. Really liked how he put the lectures together and made everything entertaining. It was not difficult to get a good grade if you pay attention. Some exam q's come from lecture material that isn't necessarily "important" per se.
Dr. Briggs is the best! He made General Chemistry I easy to understand (Which Is very important considering it sets you up for 116 and O Chem. I highly recommend taking his class! Tests can be hard at times but he gives plenty of extra opportunities to make up points elsewhere! Go to lectures they are the basis of his exams.
Dr. Briggs is an excellent professor. He hand writes notes on the board to copy down. The exams can be difficult but if you study and do the homework you should be fine. He has a resurrection final rule, meaning that if you get a higher grade on the final than an exam he will replace the test score with the final score.
The man has teaching this class down to an art, the class is not easy, but he helps you really learn. The examples done in class help and he is really a master of his craft.
Briggs is by far the best professor I have had at ASU. He makes the lectures very enjoyable to where you want to show up - even if it's a 9 am. He is VERY good at teaching and explaining things. Gives lots of examples, visuals, and writes all notes on the board for you to copy. Tests are exactly what was learned in class. Very good professor.
He's a great professor overall! He keeps lectures as interesting as possible and teaches everything clearly in lecture that you need to know for the test. He gives last semester's exam for you to study from and an idea of the types of questions he'll ask. If you actually do the MC homework and study the practice test then you should be fine.
He is an incredibly funny guy and makes lecture fun but be prepared to take notes the entire time you are in class. He doesn't really "teach" how to do problems, he just writes definitions and uses Mastering Chemistry to let yourself learn how to do the problems
It is tough to get an A, you have to work for it. But he is funny and seems to find ways for his students to succeed.
Dr. Briggs was one of the best professors I have had to date. He makes Chemistry seem not so boring, even though the lectures are somewhat long. Make sure to attend the lectures because he gives out lecture quizzes and then will give you the answers to them. Its basically like free points. Tests can be difficult but go to the SI sessions they help.
I would highly suggest going to lecture. He often includes questions about in-class videos on his exams. He makes it pretty clear what's going to be on the test, so that's nice, but the material can still be tough if you're not into chemistry and will require studying outside of class.
best chem class, study hard B)
Mr. Briggs is an exceptional teacher. He makes the class as interesting as possible although some lectures can be boring, he tries his best to make it interesting and interactive. His tests can be a bit tough, so studying and reading is a must. He is there is you have questions for him. Don't be afraid to ask him or any of the TA's.
Briggs is one of the best chem teachers you can take at ASU. He makes his lectures interesting, and does everything he can do to help you succeed in the class. If you go to lecture, do the homework, and study, you should do well. The four tests aren't too hard, and he replaces your worst test grade with your final grade (if it is higher)
Dr. Briggs is a funny and excellent professor. His exam study guides are exactly like the real tests; he tells you exactly what you need to study. I don't like chemistry, but if you use the practice material he gives you, you will do well.
Briggs created a masterpiece with his syllabus and preparation for each class. even the jokes are psychologically placed to create a happy carefree attitude that makes you learn better. Briggs is able to facilitate and deliver this challenging coursework to very large classrooms. You need to study and it isn't easy. The best teacher's are hard
Brigs is absolutely AMAZING! He is so dedicated to his students and peaks interest in lectures with cheesy jokes ad videos. His tests are tough as long as you do the practice tests that he gives out. They are exactly like the exams. He is the best CHM 113 professor at ASU and I really wished he taught 116 as well!
Dr. Briggs was a fantastic professor! His lectures were clear and concise, and the in-class demonstrations were fun and helpful. He was very approachable and was always willing to answer questions. He did in-class reviews before each test as well as provided a practice test that were both extremely helpful for tests.
Dr. Briggs was an awesome professor! I was dreading the fact that his lectures were 75 minutes long, but time really flied, and, dare I say it, it was rather enjoyable! He handwrites notes on the board so you actually have time to copy them down, and includes funny videos and demonstrations throughout the lectures. Tests are hard, so study!
Didn't use textbook; a total of 12 mastering chem online assignments; extremely structured class & extremely professional professor. He puts a TON of work into his lectures & is really there for you. 4 tests (25 M.C) + final (50 M.C). Just pay attention in lecture, take good notes, study lecture quizzes & actually KNOW your stuff. I got an A!
Dr. Briggs is awesome. As long as you stay on top of your work and study you should be fine. I'm not very good at chemistry, but he made it easier to understand. USE THE PRACTICE TESTS, because the questions are really similar to the real tests. I would definitely take him again if I had the option.
lectures are easy to follow and interesting, plus the occasional demonstrations are really entertaining. tests are 25 MC, and your class can earn free answers through a quiz game before test day. you don't really need the textbook, but it's there if you're hurting. make sure to study and you'll be just fine.
Briggs is so freaking hilarious. He makes class fun and funny and you want to pay attention even if you're tired. Just follow the lectures, do mastering chem, go to a few SI sessions, do the practice tests/test reviews and you'll get a good grade. I loved him! Would take him again in a heartbeat
Dr. Briggs is truly one of the most amazing professors I've had at ASU to date. His lectures are extremely engaging and structured. The material is presented in an organized fashion and there are SO many resources provided to help those who struggle. Would definitely take again. Do not hesitate to take this class! It is amazing!
CHM113 with Dr. Briggs was great! He makes lecture interesting by including informative/ funny videos, demonstrations by Jim, and actually works very hard to make the concepts understandable to everybody. The class itself is difficult and you will need to commit a good amount of time studying for exams. He gives out practice exams, use them!
Briggs is hands down the best Chemistry professor I've ever had. I can't much comment on the easiness of the class because I had taken AP Chem in high school so it was mostly review, but I believe that he does an amazing job of explaining the material and making sure that even if you don't really click with chemistry you can do well. Amazing!
Dr. Briggs as an awesome dude. His lectures were by FAR the best part of this course. Can't say much about the labs though, i hated them. Chemistry isn't really my cup of tea but i worked hard and did pretty well. Super tough to get an A. Make sure this class is your priority, don't fall behind. Brace yourself after test 1.
First off, Dr. Briggs is a great professor and provides a interesting chemistry class. Show up to class and complete the lecture quizzes and you will get full points. However, there are 4 exams and a final exam. You must study for them, they are difficult and worth a lot of points. There is the final exam resurrection rule, but final is very hard
This class takes up so much of your time with lecture, lab, AND recitation which is annoying. A lot of homework due before each exam. You must understand each chapter from the beginning in order to go forward in the material. Overall, Briggs is an awesome lecture. Makes class interesting and is very helpful. Gives easy in class quiz points
Ron Briggs is the best professor I have had so far at ASU. His lectures are actually engaging and don't put you to sleep. He jokes around and understands what students have to go through on a daily basis and tries to make everything as simple as possible. Lab and recitation were extremely pointless in my case. Best chem professor you could ask for!
Briggs and Jim, the guy who does the actual chemical demonstrations for us, are the best! Definitely take Briggs' lecture! You'll be happy you did!
Briggs is a funny guy and makes the lectures not as bad as they could be with all the videos he puts in and all the presentations from Jim. His exams though are pretty hard as in the class average was a 66% which is pretty bad considering he doesn't grade off "the curve". But overall he really explained things very well and I really liked him.
Briggs is a fantastic professor. He gives very clear lectures and puts every lecture power point online. He constantly communicates with the class and offers many opportunities to study and help you get the grade that you want. Overall he is a wonderful professor.
Briggs lectures are entertaining and to the point, he has Jim come in and show demonstrations of what we're lecturing on which was huge for me bc I am a visual learner. I never used the book but he refers to it a lot. Before each exam you play jeopardy and can earn up to 4 questions that will be on it. He has lecture quizzes for attendance (s'easy)
Dr. Briggs is one of the best professors i've ever had. He makes lectures actually interesting and shows a lot of videos too. He's funny and overall just a great professor. He is great all around except for one issue; his exams. They are pretty hard but if you study in depth and fully understand all the concepts then you shouldn't have a problem.
Great professor, has a good sense of humor. His lectures are really interesting and he puts a lot of time into prepping for them. Wish he was teaching CHM 116 next semester
Dr. Briggs is by far the best professor I have. He is so funny and makes the lectures very interesting. One of the only classes that I actually enjoy going to. The exams can be difficult but the practice exams he provides are very helpful.
I had Briggs at 9 AM and never once even thought about turning off my alarm! Hilarious guy dedicated to our success with gripping lectures and lots of resources to make Chemistry passable even for those of us who have always struggled with it. One of the best professors I've ever had. Take him if you can, you won't regret it!
The class consisted of four exams plus a cumulative final, online homework, and extra credit lecture quizzes, along with the lab and recitation. As much as I hate chemistry, Dr. Briggs actually made this class extremely enjoyable. I mean I actually WANTED to go to class. Also, get to class early! He plays SNL sketches before class starts.
Briggs was a very good professor and I really didn't mind going to lecture because he made it fun with funny videos and such. I absolutely hate chemistry so I'm glad I took his class to make it enjoyable so I would actually pay attention. There is a lot of homework but would highly recommend taking his class if you need the credit.
Briggs is really a great professor. The exams are pretty hard, but you will get a good grade if you attend all the recitations and laps. Go to Ashli's and Tito's dissections. They were very helpful!!!
Dr. Briggs was the best professor I had at ASU as a first semester Chemical Engineer. From the demo-heavy, engaging lectures to the self-learning homework and study guides, this class is amazing for students who do not have a solid foundation in Chemistry. I'm going to miss him next semester :).
Dr. Briggs is an amazing professor. Lectures are very interesting and to the point. He gives you all possible information that will be on the exams, and also shows that he wants his students to succeed. There are many demonstrations done in class and many videos shown so everyone understands the topic better. Would highly recommend Dr. Briggs.
I was so nervous going into this course but Dr. Briggs is by far the best professor I've had at ASU! His lectures are easy to follow and his study guides perfectly match the exams. Go to SI sessions because they really clarify a lot!! 100% recommend him!
Great professor. I really enjoyed his teaching style. I enjoyed his class because it mimicked a high school type setting to help the students acclimate. His lectures were very long and sometimes boring, but he gives good notes. His tests can be hard so start the homework early and don't cram for the tests.
Briggs is a gold standard for large lecture hall teaching. Everything he says that is relevant is written on the whiteboard by him as you go which makes for simple note taking and uses a powerpoint as supplement rather than the primary lecture lesson. The practice exams are spot on with the actual exams and the homework is tedious but easy.
Great guy, easy class, fun lectures
Best professor I have ever had. Take his class! I could go into detail on way he is the best at ASU, but it seems that everyone that rated him a "5" overall quality hit the nail on the head already. I will miss this class.
I can't think of one bad thing of Dr. Briggs. Everything taught in lecture is relevant to the course as well as the exams, so write all the notes down. All hw for the 3 Chapters on the exam is due the day before the exam. Lectures aren't boring & very quick to emails. He gives amazing practice exams that are very similar to the real exam. TAKE HIM!
Class is a lot of work, but Briggs does a great job of explaining and making everything interesting. Keep up with Mastering Chemistry to avoid stress. I didn't read from the textbook, but I took chem in high school, so reading would def be suggested. Overall, amazing professor, great experience.
Dr. Briggs was a good teacher with very interesting lectures. However the course will take up a large sum of time, this is more important to note to those not majoring in chemistry related field. The homework is monthly and very long and sometimes irrelevant to test questions. The solutions to the test review questions are you friend.
Easily one of the best professors for a naturally difficult course like CHM 113. He made this class as easy as possible and set everything up for his students to do well. His lectures were clear, funny, & interesting. Exams were designed and graded fairly. He's also very lenient. Attending lecture is really helpful since he makes chemistry simple.
If this is your first Chemistry course in college, take this professor! He dumbs it down to a level that anyone can understand. He is very knowledgeable in this subject and his lectures are easy to understand. In class lecture quizzes every day worth 5 points and 4 tests with 1 final that will replace lowest test score. Highly recommended prof!
Very funny and likes to joke around but that doesn't mean his class is easy. Lectures are packed full of confusing information. Lots of online homework. I'm only passing because of the grade curve.
Doctor Briggs is a fantastic professor. He's very clear in his lectures and is relatively strict (but fair) when it comes to grading and testing of knowledge. He gladly answers any questions in lecture, and features physical demonstrations of concepts. Attendance isn't really mandatory, but he has random group quizzes you don't want to miss.
Briggs is the best chemistry professor! His practice exams are key to passing his exams, and he is a very fair grader. He keeps the lectures interesting and is a funny guy. He even gives exam questions to do at home so you'll know a few for your exam. Definitely would recommend him!
It's evident that he really cares about giving his students the info they need for the class. His lectures are well organized and clearly well thought out. You take a ton of notes in class so it's important that you don't miss, and you also have in-class lecture quizzes on random days for participation. He makes sure to include humor for fun (:
Best professor I have ever had in my life, genuinely reignited my interest in Chemistry, I wish he taught CHM116, almost cried for the last class cause he is truly the best one there is.
Dr. Briggs is the best chemistry teacher at ASU, he is amazing! Explains everything so well and doesn't try to trick you on the exams! Only class that I was genuinely sad to finish. Take him!!
Dr. Briggs is super funny and his class was pretty easy, as long as you pay attention to the lectures. There are 4 midterms in addition to the final, and the homework is assigned through MasteringChemistry. Lectures are very information-heavy, but the in-class demonstrations help to break them up a bit.
One of the best professors I have had. The class can be challenging, as any Chem class would, but Briggs put a lot of effort into making sure everyone can do well in the class. His lectures are clear and concise, plus he adds a lot of experiment demonstrations and plays funny videos. Definitely would recommend taking him.
Briggs is a wonderful professor but his tests are very difficult. You should study way in advance for them but as long as you do you should be fine.
Dr. Briggs made intro chem engaging and interesting. He obviously does a lot of planning for his lectures, and knows how to recapture attention when there's a slump in the class. As long as you do the online assignments and take a look at the practice exams beforehand, his tests are a breeze. Excellent professor overall.
Briggs is a great chemistry professor and an engaging lecturer. His tests are very easy as long as you show up to class, do the homework and review the study guide. The study guide is very reflective of the exams. I was bad at chemistry in high school, but Briggs made it super easy to understand.
BEST CHEMISTRY TEACHER I EVER HAD! His lectures are easy to follow and takes the time to let you write down the notes he writes on the board. He does class quizzes but goes over the answers before turning them in so everyone should get 100. He gives out a couple questions on the test during the review. His tests are not hard at all.
Great professor! Lectures are super important to success in class.
Definitely the professor you want if you need to take chemistry.
His class is actually pretty easy and he makes lectures easy. His tests are 25 questions and pretty easy. I took a chem class my freshman year and basically started brand new. He does give pop quizzes but you can work together on it. Easy class and best professor. He is really good if you want to get a good foundation for Med school.
Professor Briggs is great, and he tries his best to make lectures engaging. I wouldn't want to take anyone else for CHM 113.
Dr. Briggs is one of the best lecturers ever. He keeps the class entertained while breaking down chemistry concepts and making them easy to understand. Tests are somewhat difficult, but he provides practice tests which are very similar. Would definitely recommend!
He is the best professor I have taken. His lectures are attractive that keep you out of the boring zone. His exams are all the material in class, and the final is a bit hard since you have to memorize everything from the beginning of the semester. Otherwise, his class is easy and fun.
Chem sucks, there's no way around it, but Dr. Briggs makes it as fun as possible. Things like game shows, videos, and terrible puns make lectures somewhat entertaining and fun to attend. While the tests are difficult, the sheer amount of resources available to you makes it difficult to fail them. Beware of in class "group quizzes!" Great professor!
Really great and respected professor. Engaging lectures with lots of audio visual content. Clears doubts anytime. Do show up to lecture for the quizzes which count for 5% and he drops the two lowest. Occasionally adds points to everyone's tests. Recitation's hectic, lab's easy but that's the course. Stay on top of the MasteringChemistry Homework.
Honestly the best science teacher I have ever had, and I am a BIO Major. His lectures cover ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING that you could possibly see on the exams. He does extra credit exam questions that he assigns a few days before the test. His "exam study days" are so fun, he makes game shows. He also posts practice exams!
One of the best professors I had in a long time. He has renewed my passion for chemistry. I would recommend attending every lecture because he can explain concepts clearly and you will see them on the test. Also, some test questions are in regards to activities that happened during lecture. Like a video he played or a class experiment so show up!
Very good teacher who is very air but teaches a difficult class. Chemistry is no joke and shouldn't be taken lightly, to get a good grade YOU WILL WORK FOR IT. If you are already planning on taking chem or majoring in it then Briggs is a very good choice. You will have to work in groups for labs and recitation.
My favorite chem professor because he gives really great lectures. It's still a decently hard class but he'll make sure you understand the material as long as you're willing to put in a little bit of effort.
I struggled because of who I am as a person but he gave countless resources and all types of support. He really makes chemistry super interesting and fun.
If you have a strong background in chem this class will be cake! If not, you'll have to put some more work into it but Briggs makes learning chem fun and easy! He provides so many resources and lectures are entertaining enough. He does gameshow style exam reviews, and the lecture quizzes are done in class.
Wow! What a profesor! I thought I was gonna absolutley hate chemistry and it turned out to be my favorite class ever. He is so funny and teaches clearly. Exam review days are perfectly planned game shows and all kinds of cool stuff is always happening. I highly reccomend!
Amazing!!! Take him and you will be grateful! He explains things so clearly and everything is organized so perfectly. Not to mention that he's hilarious. His exams are 95% like what he gives as practice exams. He is hands down the best 113 teacher
This class and his lectures were amazing!! I absolutely hate chemistry, hated the material, and all the homework sucked. But Briggs made everything worth it because not only are his lectures hilarious, but he even manages to make his exams hilarious. Best professor to take chemistry with for sure!!
Briggs makes a boring chemistry lecture actually interesting and fun! There are four tests and a final and they are relatively easy if you put the work in and study and practice problems, he gives you practice exams so really use those when studying. Not a class to cram the night before but Briggs is the best professor to take CHM 113 with.
If you are taking Chem 113, get this professor! His lectures are great and seem much quicker than they are. He makes his class interesting and fun to go to. Dr. Briggs is an icon and everyone loves his class. ONLY GET HIM FOR THIS CLASS!!! Plus he's funny and he cares about our success. He is amazing!!!
I have always held the opinion that chemistry is the most horrid subject ever. After this class, I still hold that opinion. Chemistry SUCKS but Briggs made it much more bearable, he is easily the funniest professor I've ever had. My complaint: the homework assignments were INSANE, I counted 76 problems for one chapter, and others had more.
Dr. Briggs makes chemistry actually funny. He jokes around a ton but is also all about getting the knowledge in his students. There is a decent amount of homework so don't procrastinate, but everyone loves him even though his class is a challenging one. He makes so many resources available to students. Use them! Dr. Briggs is the best.
I have never left a review for any professor, Dr. Briggs being my first exception. This man is exceptional, his lectures are amazing, and his class is fair. I struggled with Chem throughout high school never got it. In Briggs's class, I learned that if you work diligently and use all of the resources available, an A is extremely possible. Attend SI
I hated chemistry before taking this class but Briggs made it enjoyable and dare I say even fun. This course was definitely a challenge, but if you're willing to put in the work, you can get an A for sure. Briggs is hilarious and held my attention in every lecture. 10/10 would recommend
Dr. Briggs' class was one of the best chemistry classes I have taken yet. His lectures were clear and he wrote notes on the board so the pace was perfect. You have to work for the grade but his teaching and the amount of resources available for help make that easy.
He is amazing and his lectures are so interesting. If you pay attention in class and take down all the notes he gives in class you will do really good on the exams. Very nice professor and has lots of patience.
Not going to lie, the class is a little difficult. But, he's one of the best science professors you'll ever have. He gives lots of extra papers and packets in class that will help you so much. Make sure to attend class because he gives quizzes (dont worry he gives the answers at the end). A hilarious guy. Make sure to study and take notes.
Tough class but amazing professor. He is clear and explains things very throughly. Chemistry is super hard and I had a hard time passing but he is a great prof.
CANT BE BETTER
There isn't a better 113 prof than Briggs. He made me really enjoy chem, and looking back set me up really nicely for 116. He gives 3 freebie questions for each midterm which was nice! NO CURVE. Just take great notes and watch Chad's review videos. I scraped by barely with an A, you really do have to work with it.
Dr. Briggs is interesting and clear. His exams closely follow the practice exams and lecture, and they were very easy if you read the textbook.
He's PHENOMENAL. Lectures are fast but easy to take notes on, he does 12 random lecture quizzes though so watch out for those. He offers a ton of resources and tutors for you to pass. His homework takes time but the tests are pretty easy if you go to lecture and take notes. 100/100 would take him again in a heart beat. Also he's really funny!!!
the BEST professor I have ever had! he is so funny and really cares about the class being both educational and entertaining. chm113 really just requires hard work. practice tests he uploads are your best friend. attend SI or DS. so many resources for success, there is no reason anybody shouldn't pass. 100% take dr. briggs' class! jim rocks too!
Dr Briggs was easily one of the best teachers I've had in my entire life. He is always ready to make several jokes throughout his class, plays game shows which award free exam questions and, best of all, he makes Chemistry simple(r) and VERY fun! If you need help and choose to email him, he is quick to help and set you on the path to success.
Chemistry is hard, but he gives you so many resources to do well (office hours, ds, and si sessions). Lectures are not boring, theres videos, demonstrations, etc. You should have a background knowledge of chemistry though, so if you did not take chem in hs, take chm101. He was amazing! Super funny and he is extremely clear on what your grade is.
Super funny and pretty darn easy. The exams follow the study guide to a T, and he's very reasonable, doesn't try and throw any curveballs. Free exam questions too. Just show up and actually read the book
Dr. Briggs makes chemistry easy to understand. He has very entertaining lectures and reviews, and makes it clear what he expects you to know. DO THE PRACTICE TESTS, they are VERY similar to the actual exams (not exactly, but very worth looking at). It's not an easy class, but if you put in the work, Dr. Briggs makes it possible for you to do well
Briggs was probably one of my favorite professors of all times. I took CHM113 fall 2018 and got a D but then retook it in the summer and got an A. CHM is generally pretty hard but he made it simple to understand in a fun way. He cares about his students and is funny too. It wasn't easy, so be ready to put the work in if you want a good grade.
His teaching style is very clear, and there are lots of demonstrations throughout the semester. There are lots of lecture quizzes in class, all you have to do for them is show up and he will go through the answers before you turn it in. There are lots of review sessions for exams as well.
Dr. Briggs is a legend. CHM113 is an easy course to begin with, but he teaches in a way that makes you understand. I think back to his course from time to time and recall things he said for my higher level courses. Absolutely phenomenal.
Briggs is absolutely wonderful. He added so much humor to his lectures & is such a nice guy who really seems to care about the success of his students. Every day before lecture starts, he'll play funny videos like SNL and always adds funny answer choices to exams & replaces your final exam grade with your lowest test grade. Explains things SO well.
Dr. Briggs is without a doubt the best instructor Ive ever had. TAKE HIS CLASS. Normally, I find chemistry to be boring, but Dr. Briggs founds ways to make it interesting and funny. You will never find a science professor as unique as Dr. Briggs. If you take his class, you will have to work for your grade though as its a fairly difficult class.
Dr. Briggs is extremely passionate about Chemistry and makes the subject fun to learn. There are plenty of resources there to help you succeed if you're having trouble with the material. The subject is hard as it is but with all the resources it makes the class a lot less stressful. Would take again!
This man is an incredible lecturer. I took this class my first semester and he was by far the most entertaining. This class is by no means easy, I worked ridiculously hard to get an A, but it is possible. Hard class if you didn't take AP, impossible if you have never taken Chem. Go to lecture. Tests are hard but not impossible. Resurrection final.
Dr. Briggs is my favorite instructor I've ever had! I've always found chemistry to be pretty challenging, but Dr. Briggs made it easier for me to understand. CHM113 was still a very challenging course, but Dr. Briggs provided lots of resources to help students succeed. Don't procrastinate the homework and go to lecture!
Briggs is probably the best lecture teacher Ill ever have, so I do feel bad for not trying more in his class. I did get a B, but that was after reviewing and cramming 3 days before the final. His lectures are generally fun and entertaining. He makes learning chemistry tolerable at the LEAST. Dont skip class a lot, read, and get help when needed.
He is the professor for you. He made the transition to college science easy. He writes all the notes on the board, so it is impossible to miss something, and he makes lecture interesting. He plays videos and has live demonstrations. He has in-class quizzes to grade for participation, but he gives all answers before you turn in the quizzes.
you can tell hes passionate about what he does and how much he cares about his students. hes a fantastic prof, makes class entertaining, constantly gives reminders of the different sources for student success, and does a great job making the info as easy to absorb as possible. you would really have to try to fail his course.
The MOST passionate about chemistry. Takes attendance by "random" quizzes, which are not hard. Refers to videos on tests, so probably want to go to lecture for that. If you want a good grade, you have to work for it, otherwise it's a fairly easy class. Lectures are both informative and enjoyable. Don't NEED the textbook, but it may be helpful.
Prof Briggs is the best for CHM113 hes really passionate about chemistry and his lectures are straightforward but hes a bit fast paced so you would have to focus in lecture since I could barley keep up writing the notes. He does live demonstrations. You need a 64% to pass so if you put in some effort its easy to pass.
I usually skip a lot of my classes but his class was the only one I ever went to consistently. I was surprised that I actually could pay attention the entire time. There were live demonstrations which were cool. There is a LOT of resources in and out of class, overall amazing experience!
I started off using the textbook, but he explains concepts very well, so I did not use it past the first exam(4 total). Pearson homework took hours, but if you understand that and lectures, you'll get an A. He does give quizzes in class mainly for attendence and practice because he gives you the answers to the quiz at the end.
Dr. Briggs is a great professor! He puts together a "game show" before exams for review and gives the class a couple of the questions that will show up on the exam beforehand so you're guaranteed to get those right. There is a lot of homework but it helps to strengthen your understanding of the material.
Briggs was great and chill. He likes to be extra by holding exam reviews jeopardy-style, which makes things interesting. However, he uses Mastering Chemistry which includes LOTS of hw problems. He does note by writing on a whiteboard and doesn't like it when you take pictures though. I recommend that you practice and study a lot for his class
briggs is great! didn't bother with going to zoom lectures; watch his lecture videos uploaded on canvas instead & really work hard on the homework. takes your best 10 homework grades. lets u replace your lowest test grade with your final grade (if you do well on the final). really good at explaining hard concepts. labs are a lot of work per usual.
Briggs was understanding of the current state of the world which made the class less stressful. Of course, the topics are still difficult, but he didn't use lockdown browser or webcams. He posts lectures you can watch on your own time (that are cool and interesting) and during the actual class time, you do practice problems. Wish he taught CHM 116
Chem is hard, but having Briggs is one of the reasons why I did pretty good. His lectures are easy and helpful, he will replace your lowest exam grade if your final is higher, and he is a good and funny guy. Easily the best chem professor at ASU. Take Briggs, do your best, and you'll be fine. Some extra credit is offered as well.
High-quality Professor who makes sure you're invested in Chemistry. He made sure that we all understood Chemistry. Briggs also gave discussion sessions to help out and was entertaining in those sessions and the lecture videos. If you are in your first year, take him. The only con is that he doesn't teach CHM116, but he makes up for it in spades.
Dr. Briggs is one of the best professors I've had so far. His lectures are very well organized and he doesn't stray off topic. He also plays lots of video clips from various science shows including interviews with Bill Nye that make the lectures much more interesting. As long as you pay attention, you'll pass! Best chem professor!!
DISCLAIMER: I took this class online due to COVID-19. Lectures were nice and occasionally fun. He's definitely the one you want if he's available for CHM113
Loved this class because it was super chill. Lectures were all prerecorded. I highly recommend attending the discussion sessions. Exams aren't proctored and you can use notes. A lot of mastering chemistry but you have a lot of time to finish it.
There was a lot of Mastering Chemistry home work but as long as you spaced them out you will be fine. His pre-recorded lectures were fairly easy to follow along and were not at all bland. Attendance is not required but the class times were used for discussion sessions which was very helpful. His tests were open not and did not use lockdown browser.
I took prof Briggs fall 2017. I remember his class being fun. He uses a lot of movie and real demonstrations. Class was at 7:30a but if you were early he played funny videos. Passionate and energetic! Notes are written on the board PAY ATTENTION. I didn't study you should if you want an A+. Tests are open response. If he taught 116 would taken him.
Dr. Briggs has been my favorite Chem Professor so far. He is amazing at lecturing and explains concepts in such an easily digestible way. It is not mandatory to read the textbook, however, it doesn't hurt to use it as a learning aid. Cracks silly jokes that make me smile. 10/10!
this prof was really, chill. all exams were open notes but were pretty difficult. his lectures were really good. always cracking jokes. gives homework on person mastering chemistry.
He gives so many resources for exam prep. He holds review sessions with other professors and TRULY wants his students to do well. His lecture videos make the topics understandable, as they are thorough videos and he always keeps the mood up with humor. If you have the option to take this course with Dr. Briggs, do it.
Honestly one of my favorite professors at ASU. I took this as a summer class so it was condensed and pretty stressful, but he has great lectures that keep you engaged and explain topics well. He gives so many resources and actually cares about his students. Chemistry is not my strength by any means, but I would definitely recommend this professor.
This class was a piece of cake! Took this class virtually so things were a little different but you didn't have to attend class. He posted all the lectures online, and they were fairly easy to understand. Watch the videos. Practice the problems, and this class should be cake!
Briggs incorporates a lot of different medias in his class (clips, presentations, games, live science) to keep his class fun and interesting. His lectures can be long but they are very clear and simple. If you took AP Chem (but didn't get a 4 or 5 like me, curse covid) you already know all the material in this class. Great class, great intro to CHM
Dr. Briggs is an amazing lecture professor if you genuinely want to learn and understand general chemistry. However, this does not mean the course is easy. You will need to work hard and study for exams as they are proctored and of decent difficulty. Otherwise, especially for pre-health students, I would strongly recommend Dr. Briggs for CHEM 113.
Dr. Briggs is awesome! CHM 113 is not super easy, you definitely have to put time in studying but he makes chemistry super enjoyable and make sense. I wish he taught other chemistry courses because I would 100% take him again.
Dr. Briggs is so funny and charming; you can really tell he wants his students to succeed. That being said, this class is no walk in the park. I had to work so, *SO* hard to get an A, but it can be done! Discussion Sessions are super helpful. His exams are pretty difficult, so don't expect to pass this course if you don't put in the work.
Chemistry is a hard class no matter what, but Briggs is a great lecturer and he explains difficult concepts well. He wants you to pass and he provides you with tons of resources to make sure you can get the help you need. Attend the optional discussion sessions, they REALLY help. He's a fantastic teacher. Take him for every chm class you can.
No professor would ever truly top the amount of effort and time Dr. Briggs puts into his lectures and resources. He would put on funny videos before each lecture and have entertaining chem demonstrations and test reviews. He also broke down concepts to make them easy to understand. If you have him as a professor, you're in for a treat.
Dr. Briggs' lectures are very engaging and he provides funny videos and live chemistry demonstrations in addition to lecturing. That being said, you have to work your butt off for an A in this class. The tests are in-person and proctored with only a periodic table and equation sheet provided, so it is very important to study after every lecture.
Professor Briggs was great - chemistry is a hard course, but he's great at breaking down concepts and making the lectures entertaining. You have to work for your grade though - study and try to attend every discussion session, they're the most helpful resource you have. Do all of the homework & go to class, lab, and recitation!
This class is one of the only chem 113 classes that takes exams in person. They are pretty difficult. The lectures are long but he makes it fun with videos, jokes and chemical reaction presentations. This class took hours and hours of my time. You can still do well and pass this class if you do not do well on the exams, but have a A in lab, rec, hw
This class really makes you work for it. Definitely, be prepared for several hours a week devoted to this class. I did between 12 and 15. Go to discussion sessions, they help more than you think.
Briggs is a great choice for CHM113. His lectures are pretty easy to follow, and he does experiments in class sometimes that are fun to watch. There are a few freebie questions for every exam and a resurrection final.
As someone who didn't take chemistry, Briggs made life bearable. Chem became as 'easy' as it could get. He explains things very well but this class is HARD. Good news: he forgives lowest test score if you do well on final, drops 2 lowest HWs and lecture quizzes (pop quizzes but he gives you answers), and often gives out free exam questions prior.
Absolutely not! Something is going on with these reviews. The only time I enjoyed the class was the experiments and jokes. Other than that the tests are crazy hard.
Super fun class. 4 exams and a final, all multiple choice on paper, gives you 2-4 exam questions in lecture. Lecture quizzes during class on paper, goes over answers with you. Writes notes on board with you, online homework is due before the exam. Lab and recitation are fine, can be confusing. Groups for lab with a worksheet/report each week.
Dr. Briggs is a cool professor, he cares about teaching, has interesting lectures and fun review activities. There are LOTS of study resources and minimal homework. Doing well on the lecture exams is probably the most important, and I found that studying the provided example tests/ discussion session reviews were the easiest way to ace the class.
Was a good professor would suggest taking him for chem 113
Took 113 last semester and it was hard, but if you are willing to put in the hours to study and actually understand the material it takes off some stress. You are given practice exams which were exams from previous semesters which are EXTREMELY close to the test, so take it many times until you understand how to solve every problem! Great teacher!
Fun, engaging lectures that are easy to understand and entertaining to be a part of. Tests are merely 25 MCQ's that you'll probably do well in. That said, it is chemistry so you may have a hard time. But if you absolutely, without a doubt need to take chemistry, take it with this man.
Briggs is an amazing CHM113 professor! Lectures were structured, and I could understand the concepts easily. In-class demonstrations were engaging & interesting! Briggs likes to make jokes, and before lectures, he would play funny clips. On tests, there's at least 1 question from a lecture video, so make sure to attend class! Take him if you can!
Best professor I've had. I suck at chemistry, but he makes it easier to understand than even my high school teacher did. He is willing to answer any questions and explains concepts well. His class is engaging and fun, and he's a funny guy.
Great professor. Writes notes out for the class. Discussion sessions are there for additional help (recorded so you don't have to attend live sessions). Lots of very helpful exam prep. Exams are exactly what you learn in class. Prof knows his material and responds quickly to emails. Great (and very fun) class for beginners. In-class demonstrations.
He explains things really well and there are a lot of opportunities for help outside of class.
I usually struggle to pay attention in lectures, but this class managed to hold my attention and I regularly came to lectures excited to learn. The other CHM 113 instructors also work together to provide an amazing support system outside of class with office hours, discussion sessions, in-person exam reviews, and an online discussion board.
I had a great time with Dr.Briggs. He has a clear grading criteria and is eager to help students. The exams are worth about 60% of your grade but if you do well on the labs, recitations, and lecture quizzes, and homework you will be fine.
Professor Briggs is a great professor! He makes lecture interesting with live demos and jokes. The content is difficult since it is chemistry, but as long as you put in some work and do your best on the tests, it's very much possible to get an A in this class. I highly recommend taking this course with him!
King of CHM113. Absolutely loved Briggs, Agota, Jim, and all other faculty members that made the CHM113 experience as amazing as possible. At ASU, you can definitely tell who shows up for the paycheck or who loves to teach others. Briggs and all the other CHM113 people are certainly ones who love teaching others about their profession.
He gave very good notes and gave access to practice tests so that students knew what to prepare for. The tests were hard but if you put in the work the class is definitely worth it.
I really enjoyed Dr. Briggs lectures! He made class so interesting and always cracked jokes in between lecture. If you came to class a little early he would put up funny videos to entertain you and that was always refreshing. The exams were pretty tricky so one should learn to test take and study! Jim and Agota were amazing and super helpful! Loved
His lectures are hilarious and engaging, he does move quite fast and handwrite all of the notes. Tests are kind of hard so you do need to try and study, but there are a lot of study materials provided for every test. I did horrible on 3 exams (less than 75 on all 3) but was still able to get a decent final grade.
This prof somehow manages to make the most confusing and mind-numbing topics bearable and maybe even a little understandable. He is happy to provide clear answers to whatever questions you ask, and will keep helping you til you understand. He provides LOTS of helpful resources (!!read the textbook!!) but this class took up ALL my time. Good luck!
Can be difficult if you fall behind early on but he gives you everything you need in order to succeed
I was not a big fan of his class events, but it cannot be denied that this is THE best science professor at ASU. Made CHM 113 feel possible as a CS major. I've never done particularly well in chem, but I have taken it before. His class is so straightforward, no-nonsense and actually helpful in attaining good grades. He MAKES sure you succeed. 6/5.
The class was great, and most of the grade weights on how well you do on the tests, but other than that he is an amazing professor.
I never took chem before and was super intimidated by it going into Briggs' class, but his lectures felt less like lecture and more like a Seaworld show. Agota, Briggs, and Jim give you all the tools you need to succeed--I literally went from a D in the first half of the sem to finishing with an A because of the way his class is set up.
Dr. Briggs is one of the best professors at ASU. He genuinely cares about his students and makes it incredibly easy to succeed in CHM113. Take advantage of Agota's discussion sessions! Jim's experiments and Dr. Briggs' humor makes lecture entertaining. Prior to tests, a "game show" formatted review occurs during lecture to win free exam questions.
This class basically solely depends on how well you do on the 4 exams and the final exam (which can replace a past exam score). Amazing lectures with a lot of visuals. Attendance is not mandatory, but there are 12 lecture quizzes you won't know the date of. Little to no extra credit. A lot of support from staff, including reviews & practice tests.
Dr. Briggs makes the material very understandable. Attendance isn't mandatory, but highly recommended, as he doesn't post his lectures online. I was never great at chem, but he explained everything so clearly. The lectures and demos were interesting and funny. He and the other instructors give a lot of resources to study and prep for exams
Dr. Brigg's class had me excited to come to lecture because there was always something interesting going on whether it be his presentations or Jim's demonstrations. There was a lot of material to cover obviously but between the different sections and Discussion Sessions (Actually use these, they're amazing) It never felt like I couldn't succeed.
Truly a one of a kind phenomenal professor. He always kept the atmosphere lighthearted and wasn't afraid to throw jokes into the lectures. I was really able to stay engaged in his class and absorb the knowledge extremely well. Jim the experiment demonstrator and Agota the discussion session leader deserve recognition too, this class is a-ma-zing!
Amazing! I loved and really enjoyed this course, interesting and fun. There are lecture quizzes where he provides answers in class, and all homework is due the day before exams. The exams are pretty difficult and you do need to dedicate a lot of time studying for them, but Briggs provides you with all the resources, you just need to utilize them!
Technically attendance isn't graded but he gives easy lecture quizzes so you have to attend to get the points. The content can be very difficult, but if you attend the discussion sessions it helps a lot. The exams are tough, but if you do good on the final it will replace your lowest exam score. Content is hard, but Briggs tries the best he can.
Lectures were actually entertaining, and he has the Chem dream team of himself, Jim, and Agota. They do everything they can to help you succeed. The content is very difficult, but they give you all the materials you need to do well. Word of Advice: Don't think you'll do great here just because you took high school Chem, go to discussion sessions.
This was a very fun class with entertaining lectures, and little homework. Briggs himself is great, and he has helpers that are very caring and want you to succeed. However, this class is still very difficult in terms of the subject matter, so study before tests and reach out for help if necessary, they are great. Recommend showing up too.
Try to avoid the class with him in the summer.
Dr Briggs very clearly lays out the assignments, readings, and participation that are expected to do well in his class which is very helpful. Even during summer session, his lectures are very clear and information, and he works to make them fun! He gives so much assistance so everyone is able to do well with effort. I could not recommend gim more.
Great professor. Him, Agota and Jim provide you with all the resources to succeed. Take him. Best chem professor at ASU
He's okay. He's pretty average overall. You do not receive a cheat sheet in this class, which you do in another CHM113 class (Wei Wang's). Lectures can be a bit monotonous, but he has his fun moments. You can tell he loves his job, which is nice.
Dr. Briggs is awesome. He is incredibly funny and is always eager to teach us. The class is very difficult and I have definitely had my bad grade moments, but there are countless resources to help you learn. If you are willing to put in the work to get a good grade, Dr. Briggs is a great option. But if you do not work, the class will be very hard
Briggs was a great chem professor. His lectures were very clear and the only assignments in that class were lecture quizzes and homework, which was due the day before the exam of that Unit. To succeed, he uses the practice tests he gives to study fir exams. The discussion sessions were also very helpful.
This is the BEST chem professor I could've had. He provides insanely good study guides/practice exams and does his best to ensure his students succeed. If you need to take CHM 113, TAKE BRIGGS.
A very good professor overall. He doesn't provide a cheat sheet like the other chemistry teachers at ASU, but he makes up for it with his very funny lectures.
He is a great prof and makes chemistry a bearable class. I am convinced those that don't succeed in this class must simply just not attend lectures. He gives problems for every test and it is very clear what will be tested on with the given study guides.
Highly recommend Ron. Very funny and caring of his students. Attendance isn't mandatory but GO bc there's random lecture quizzes done in class and he writes notes on the whiteboard that you can't take pictures of. He really wants everyone to succeed.
LOVED this professor. he actually cares about you as a person and your success. he writes notes on the board so that you have more than enough time to copy them down. their were small quizzes almost every other lecture that he would go over at the end, so it's easy to get those points if you're in class. tests were a little hard like any chem class
I took Dr. Briggs in the fall, and can say he is one of the best chemistry teachers at ASU. While in his class, I actually looked forward to coming to his lectures. He provides a fantastic learning experience, combined with a great sense of humor as well. It is true that his tests will be harder, but should not be a problem if you go to lectures.
*the* chem professor at ASU. Actually made me look forward to going to class and enjoy chem again. Literally nothing bad to say about him. The class is still hard but he makes it so much more bearable and if you put the work in (go to discussion sessions) you will be fine. Sad he's not teaching 116
He is fine
Professor Briggs is Jesus reincarnate, that is quite literally understating him. The lectures were incredibly engaging, I was never bored, and the demonstrations by Jim were phenomenal. I hated chemistry in high school because of how they taught it, but here with Briggs it honestly makes me want to be a chem major. Great lectures, great quiz credit
Dr. Briggs is one of the best professors I've had. His lectures are super funny, and he loves his job. Attendance isn't mandatory, but lecture quizzes are randomly assigned, so try to attend every lecture. The concepts are pretty hard, so go to the discussion sessions as often as you can. Each test is harder than the last, so make sure to study.
Dr. Briggs was funny, caring, and overall one of the best professors i've ever had. I wish he taught all chem courses! There were practice exams that helped significantly when it came to exam time, and trivia in class to earn free exam questions! If you take chm 113, choose Dr. Briggs!
I am god-awful at chemistry, but Briggs made it a bit more entertaining. Gives multiple free exam questions and chapter/exam reviews are SUPER helpful. I probably could have gotten an A if I put in more time, so my grade is not a reflection of Briggs and his teaching. There are more than enough resources to succeed in his course if you put in time.
I highly recommend taking Dr. Briggs! Provides all the information during lectures and uses many reliable resources. His examples are always fun and he really left an impact on me. He is hilarious and likes to keep things lighthearted. Dr. Briggs knows how to make chemistry fun and simple. Pay attention in class and do what he recommends.
Briggs is such a good professor. He writes notes alongside us and genuinely tries to help us understand the material. He gives lots of resources and with lecture, lab, and recitation it is super possible to end this class with a high A. Honors project for him consists of being part of a game show exam review and answering questions on Slack
Genuinely the most amazing professor on campus! Dr.Briggs gives very clear lectures, and is very willing to help all of his students. Lectures were exciting annd included live demonstrations. If you put in the work, you will do amazing in this class; there is no excuse not to. Attend discussion sessions and look at all practice exams.
Absolutely amazing. So glad I came across this class my freshman year. Such a great introduction to chemistry!
Amazing professor took him for summer and helped me out so much! He gives 5 extra credits points at the end of the semester and gives at least 2-3 free exams questions before each test. Homework problems are best way to study, would 100% recommend him again!
Professor Briggs is a fantastic chem teacher. His engaging lectures, great resources, and fun class environment make this challenging course much more manageable. Using unstuckstudy ai along with the practice exams really helped me ace this class.
Take this man for your CHEM113 class. I hate chemistry but that has nothing to do with this class, he makes it very interactive and doesn't just stand there yapping about the same topic for 1 hour everyday. He acts out what he can, gives 2 free answers on exams, and wants people to do well. He has alot of resources outside of class.
Briggs was a good professor and I can confirm that lectures were always interesting. There are many resources for help in this course like the discussion sessions so take advantage of those. He was very funny and there would often be experiments done during class. However, there is no extra credit unlike the other professor for this course.
Dr. Briggs is very nice and organized, he's the only teacher that would actually write down notes on the board for students to copy on their notebooks. attendance is not mandatory but you would not want to miss his lectures. tests are hard and tricky but you'll do good if you studied hard enough and don't leave everything till last minute.
Best CHEM 113 professor. Loved his teaching style was very interactive with in lecture experiments held by Jim. plays who wants to be a millionaire before each test with a student playing for a chance for 3 exam questions for the class which is fun. Tests are hard but put in work and you'll succeed. Discussion sessions are very helpful
Dr. Briggs is the closest thing to Jesus you will meet on earth. I am not at all a science person, but he helped make this class bareable. He would give us 3 free exam questions if we did well in a game show and for this exam, he even bumped it up to 4. Also would put up SNL skits for us to watch which I LOVED.
the class was hard af but briggs was funny and had good lectures/in class notes which made up for it. tests r close to the practice but u should still study because its a lot of content/memorization. also the lab and recitation section sucks which is the only downside. aslo go to class cuz theres random lecture quizzes
An amazing professor. Really knows what he is teaching and makes the lectures insanely funny and engaging. Probably one of the best professors for a somewhat challenging first-year class
Dr. Briggs was a truly amazing professor. His class was easy to follow given his note-taking system, his lectures were entertaining, and I never found it hard to pay attention or succeed in his class so long as I did the work and took advantage of the resources offered.
This class was incredibly easy as I already took AP Chemistry in High School; it was basically an easier version of that course. I would take Briggs, Wang or Kimball if you have the chance. All amazing professors!
Dr. Briggs is an amazing professor. Lectures were straight-forward and he writes along with you making it easy to take notes. Plays funny videos at the beginning of class to get you in a good mood. Difficult course, but enjoyable. I recommend attending Discussion Sessions, specifically Dr. Debreczeni's because they prepare you well for exams.
lowk best chem professsor i could ever ask for. Take his class. Attendence is not mandatory but I would suggest to show up and take notes has they are given based on the exam. Watch all the zoom recordings and the handouts of Dr. Agota Debreczeni's discussion sessions as they give you all the information you need for the exam.
Professor Briggs was a very thorough and fun professor. He tracks attendance by giving lecture quizzes every so often. He moves at a very nice speed, not staying on material for too long, but not breezing through it extremely fast. He has a sense of humor and can really lighten the mood for such a dreaded subject.
Lectures were always entertaining, he talks very fast at times so it might get harder to understand sometimes.
Dr. Briggs is such a personable guy, he is amazing for chemistry. He is super funny, lectures are very understandable and clear. He does a "gameshow" where a barrett student comes up and answers questions in order to earn test questions, we usually get 3. There isn't anything surprising on the tests, practice exams are very similar.
Briggs is honestly a great guy. Personally, I didn't do all that well because my style of learning isn't really huge lectures. I would say you will do fine as long as you study and stay on top of the homework. He does lecture quizzes relatively often, so I would suggest going to the lectures for sure.
Briggs is my favorite teacher, I really recommend taking him. He's so genuine and his class was so easy to follow. All his tests were just like the practice tests (including the final), so it was really to end with a good grade in class. He wrote the notes on a whiteboard and went through examples which was really helpful. Definitely take this!
Dr. Briggs is the epitome of what a college professor should be. Super engaging lecturer (aided by CHM 113 legend Jim), writes notes along with the class on the board, and is a hilarious guy. Genuinely loved going to lectures. Exams are difficult but his study guides/practice exams are accurate & detailed, and you have Dr. Agota's review sessions.
Dr. Briggs is a great professor. In lectures, he writes the information on the board as he's speaking, as opposed to just reading off a PowerPoint. Attendance is not mandatory, but I would recommend attending the lecture as there are random lecture quizzes. The discussion sessions with Agota are very useful to help better understand the material.
Dr. Briggs was an awesome professor! He always tried to make the material more interesting and exciting by showing experiments and videos. He writes all the notes out on the whiteboard. He takes attendance through lecture quizzes and homework isn't due till before the exam. I suggest going to the DS sessions and doing the practice exams! Fun class!
Amazing prof. I have a really difficult time with chem but Prof. Briggs made his class engaging and easy to understand, he provided so many resources between canvas reviews, textbook work, and even in class game style reviews. He's aware the course is difficult and is incredibly engaging. He records office hours and review sessions.
One of the hardest classes I've ever taken. Professor's affinity for note-taking in lecture videos made me want to skip them entirely, even in 2x speed. Discussion session/review instructor was awesome, learned more from her explanations than I did from professor's videos. Labs are VERY time-consuming, wish I'd have opted for another instructor.
Kept things interesting and fun. He responded very quick, and has the best dad jokes.
One of the best classes I have taken so far, thanks to Dr Briggs. Although I admit the class was mainly review for me, I felt that the complexity of questions on homework and exams were the perfect balance. I truly enjoyed his lecture videos; they were pleasant, funny, and overall just a great way to cover the content.
Dr. Briggs is an incredible professor. I struggled with chemistry in high school, but with Dr. Briggs, it was a breeze. He does a great job at explaining concepts in a way that is easy to understand. Practice exams are very similar to actual exams. You can use a cheat sheet on all exams, including the final. I wish he taught CHM116!
Professor Briggs is an amazing professor. I had the honor of being a Slack moderator as part of my honors project. The requirements are discussion posts and participating in his game show, which is so amazing and fun, before the exam. I love how Professor Briggs takes time to write out the notes. Extra credit for DS sessions,TAKE ADVANTAGE.
Guys, if you don't end up with Dr. Briggs, literally don't take CHM until you are in a later semester when you can end up in his lecture (unless you're really smart and have prior experience in other chemistry courses). If you genuinely try, it's impossible not to get at least a B-, and that's coming from someone who struggled with basic HS chem.
Best teacher ever, class is fun with lots of demos and funny videos. Class was engaging and I looked forward to it every week. You do have to work to understand how to do the work sometimes, but he is very good at explaining.
Dr. Briggs was a very good professor. Loved how he would write the notes onto the board, not just show powerpoints and read them to us. Content is basic chemistry, if you have a decent grasp of honors or AP chem in highschool, you should do fine. He also creates practice exams that are very similar to the actual exam, very useful.
Although I'm not a chemistry person, Dr. Briggs had great lectures and many resources to help my grade. He gives many opportunities for help outside of class as well as tips on how you should study and succeed in his class. He's also hilarious and makes lectures fun.
BRIGGS IS SO AMAZING. Please take him if you can. I did bad in highschool chem, but significantly improved when i took his class. There are SO many extra credit opportunities that it's impossible not to get at least a B if you actually put in the effort. There are also game shows. I was sad to leave and I wish I could take him again :(
Briggs is my goat here at ASU. God bless his soul
This is the one of the most immaculate professors a freshman can step foot into. He is a hilarious educator that also takes his teaching to be serious and engaging. Dr. Briggs make class great to enter and not something you want to miss out, always accessible at office hours (unless emails a change). Great professor and person all around.
He's nice but I dislike his method of teaching and I wish someone told me before. Vague slides are posted and he writes down the notes that you have to copy. Questions done in class are not as hard as the test or are done very fast before you can understand so you have to teach yourself. Don't rely on him rely on the Discussion Sessions.
I truly enjoyed showing up for Briggs lectures, he definitely made them unique. I never took a Chemistry class before this, so it was definitely a difficult course for me. I ultimately learned more from listening to the DS sessions rather than his lectures. I didn't do great on exams but still finished with a B+.
Super chill guy. He loves making jokes, brings in experiments all the time. Loves blowing things up with Jim. Very available, lots of extra credit, good at explaining concepts. Would not have chose anyone else as a professor. take him if you can.
I took this class in Spring 2025. He very much projects a dad personality in class, frequently injecting that sense of humor into his lectures (although I don't like his taste in sketch comedy). He's overall effective; if lectures don't do it, he gives plenty of other resources to help you succeed. If you study, you'll do just fine.
Very easy class, you don't even need to attend the lectures if you already have decent knowledge in chemistry. However he does have lecture quizzes which make up 5 percent of your final grade, and those are only given in class so you may have to go sometimes. Recitations very easy, and the tests are the easiest of all the chem113 teachers.
