he does NOT discuss the readings from class, too poetic, nice but boring!

Good guy. Liked the class. Loved the fact he was so pro-Canada. Refreshing.

I found his Religious Studies 202 class to be very interesting, and he is totally non-biased when he speaks about different religions. I liked his teaching so much I am going to take Religious Studies 201 this fall.
nice but very abstract
smart man, helpful, a bit eccentric, mostly writing assignments.
Good instructor, easy going, and he knows the stuff well. He is also very open to discussion. I enjoyed the classes.
Finally a prof that makes you think - in a good way! Knows what he's talking about.
Ron is great, does an excellent job of being open minded in a subject where it's difficult to do so.
Independent Directed Study POSC 490. Ron is a wonderful instructor. Challenges you as a student. Enthusiastic and Supportive, but also criticizes nicely. If you want to enjoy Political Studies - Ron's the instructor to accomplish this.
Ron is the reason I am a political science major. He does not lecture, he lets his students read, ask questions and form their own opinions. If you like the memorize and regurgitate style you may not like his class.
Great teacher, leads great debates in Class and always teaches relevant current events in class. His Amnesty experience is an asset in his teaching as well.
Awesome guy, I'm totally enjoying this course. He makes everything seem so normal and everyday that it's not at all difficult to study.
Wierd, but so nice, mello, embracing the world in a hippy sort of way. But I found the readings difficult (the actual text, not The Red Tory Tradition or the Robin Matthews books!!)
Ron is a major asset of UCFV, both a brilliant teacher and a great human being.
Ron's a one trick pony. When it comes to canadian nationalism, he knows his stuff, but when you ask him why canada deserves defending, he comes up blank. Anything else to do with political science he seems to reduce to canadian nationalism. If that's your thing, great instructor. otherwise avoid
Not like most profs has his own way of teachin... it was a great class...
POSC 190 was heavy on political rhetoric and U.S.-bashing. Rather flakey. Used the class as a soapbox from which to brainwash naive 18-year-olds fresh out of high school. if you don't "toe" his ideological "line" you'll suffer for it.
Rambles, name-drops, speaks from the heart.
I don't know how someone could possibly think that Ron was flaky! I've known few people in my life with as much integrity as Ron. He really wants his students to learn on a heart felt level. And if you have a problem completing an assignment, no one is as grace giving as Ron! One of UCFV's best!
I went into this class with not a clue about politics and morality... once i got over Ron's deep soulful inflections I really began top appreciate him. He truely is interested in our points of view and encourages trains of thought. If you have an opinion, it is always valued and never wrong.
In a class about international relations we sure didn't talk about it. Every class dissussed Canadain High tory tradition but didn't bother to connect it to international relations. Its good for students to read the textbook but I paid for the guy to teach me a least a little bit.
Great Prof - really interpersonal with students which U don't find often @ Varsity. If U'r a slacker U don't want him (lots of essays). Upper level courses are his best 4 deep thinking (U get past the tory tradition once he knows U'r grounded in Polisci material - better not 2 B a newbie!
Ron is possibly the nicest person on the earth. Very encouraging and supportive. The course had a lot of presentations and class discussions, so not a lot of instruction time, but he guided the discussions well and truly made you think past the surface issues to the deeper questions.
I had a hard time in this class.
One of the worst teachers ever. I dropped his class. He sure was in love with the sound of his own voice. He even put a book that HE WROTE on the required text list. Turns out it was a book of poetry, which had nothing to do with the course at all. He spent one whole class making us take turns reading it outloud. After that we never used it again!
This prof guides you to think, feel, analayze and debate - his style is his own, yet do not underestimate him or his free spirit...I would say everyone should take at least one Ron Dart class, for enlightenment alone. Grading, papers, etc are fair
I had Ron in my first year at UCFV.His was the very first post-secondary class that I took and I hated it.The experience made me feel very negative about college. He sure didn't talk a lot about the course topic, and he made us buy two of his own books that had nothing to do with the course and we didn't even use.Not reccomended for 1st year student
I don't think a person could use more metaphores if they tried! Class was great, insightful, he wasn't exactly impartial when discussing Canadian American relations but was careful to show all sides of any issue. I'm going out of my way to take more of his classes.
Hard marker with little useful criticism. Thought provoking yet difficult. He is very slack in his lessons.
Fantastic teacher. Gaining recognition across Canada for his work. One bright guy.
Thought prevoking. A genuine love of canada reflected in all his classes.
BORING-WASTE OF TIME and Money
He looks like Fonzie a little, old Fonzie that you see in the Waterboy that is. However I've found his POSC 190 class to be pretty dull.
RD is a wise man. Unfortunately for this class we were forced to endure a mindnumbing 1-2 Hours of student presentations per class. The other half of the class was class discussions. A 1st year class with students debating on subjects we are only minisculely familiar does not provide any real insight.I would have much rather heard him lecture.
Class discussions made up the majority of every class for most of the semester. Class discussions kept to a bare minimum. Expectations non-existence; would not give word length of final exam answers, but rather "time lengths" of 30 minutes per answer. One of two mandatory textbooks written by himself and had little relevence or cohesiveness.
did not like his class i found it boring
The class was allright. Ron generally just rambles on-and-on, but he stays pretty 'close' to what he wants you to get out of the course. When talking with him out of class, I found that he avoided answering my questions. Open to anything, so long as it's argued well.
Ron's classes are interesting, so long as you do more than simply read the texts. In order to "get" anything out of the class I took, I found I had to set some time apart to really try and see the greater picture that was being painted. Speaking of pictures and paintings, he loves metaphores. Anyways, good if you don't like highly structured stuff.
Ron is intelligent, but you're gonna have to put up with a lot of talk about mountains. he's a good guy, a tad uninteresting.
I had high hopes for this class, but most classes were devoted to student presentations. We had maybe 3 lectures all year, and they were kept to a minimum and involved many class discussions from students that were relatively uneducated in this field(inluding myself). We took this class to learn more about world politics, but did not.
I struggled with his class; I could not read his notes or understand his lectures. Most of the time we would have class discussions or presentations and it seemed that he wasn?t very involved. He does seem like very interesting man but i just cant learn with his teaching style. I wont be taking a class with him again.
Great guy, but not a very good instructor. He doesn't really "teach" the class ... instead we all do presentations and whatever is left of class is used to break into groups to "discuss" the text readings. There really isn't any structure and I feel like I haven't learned anything. Nice guy, just not my learning style. I need more structure!
Class act.
Ron provided an excellent classroom environment with guest lecturers and a field trip!
He is a easy going person who relies heavily on the outdoor metaphors. The only negative thing I can say is that he changes the textbooks every semester and therefore makes it impossible to resell your old book
TOO MUCH Werk
He is likeable by most students but doesnt really teach the class and rarely lectures. He taught an important class with such potential but did not carry through my expectation. Dart is extremely easy going, laid back and lazy, and its over a month and a half since end of classes and he still didnt get our marks in.
Ron is a very laid back teacher. He leaves a lot of the learning responsibility up to the students. He is very knowledgeable and I took a lot away from the class. He lets you learn without telling you what to think and I found the class discussions valuable. If you contribute to the class discussion you will easily do well in this class.
I did great in this class simply by contributing to class discussions and having a good presentation. He likes when students think for themselves. uses many metaphors and did not insert his bias or personal beliefs into the class. Has a lot of knowledge and experience in international relations.
Very laid back teacher, you will get the most out of this class if you actually read up on the events to be discussed. You WILL get a good mark if you participate in the class discussions and edit your take home midterm more than once.
Ron is a great guy, I thoroughly enjoyed his class. He will give you a good mark if you earn it and he is very fair in his marking. Get ready for a ton of metaphors! He is really laid back and has an unbiased opinion for you to make your own decisions about hot topics. Great class!
Ron is a great guy and I really recommend doing a directed study with him...just not his general classes because he ends up re-using his metaphors and his knowledge too much. He's great with what he knows but that isn't a ton...although he's very lenient with student-driven project ideas. Keep in mind you will be teaching yourself frequently.
Great guy, knowledgeable. As someone who is used to structured lectures and intensive theoretical teaching alike to other profs in the polisci dept, I found Ron frustrating at first. But once you learn his style and just go with it, he's not so bad. Get into his way of thinking & you'll get an A. Very philosophical guy with a diff view of the world
Ron...is interesting. nice guy, but wouldnt take a class with him again. definitely not my learning style. have to read a lot, but the final and midterm are take-home. he marks them hard though, so dont be lax about it.
He is such a nice guy, laid back and chill. He is very intelligent yet delivers lectures with ease. Just do the readings, the exams are take home, make sure to edit your exams as well participating in discussions. HE is fair, and doesn't make you look stupid, so ask questions and interact.
Class was pretty boring, a lot of the class is without substance. Not to difficult not to easy, most of the mark was based of essays. He gives you essays for midterms and finals.
don't why people hate him, good prof, loved his class. you have to pay attention, there is no set notes, he will just ramble on about a certain subject and expects you to know what he talks about because they wil likely be on the written exams. Very flexible in regards to the project - either presentation or paper. Easy marker, but know your stuff.
This man is brilliant. A schedule filler that turned into my favorite class. Very conversational style and open to discussing just about anything. Give him a medal.
This class is boring. Ron rarely lectures. He brings in guest speakers almost daily. While he keeps neutral on his party decisions he makes sure to tell you his opinion on everything else. If you dont eat sleep and breathe politics he thinks your wasting your life. Nice that tests are take home but hate that one of his books is a required text.
first you read the material- he lectures on it over a couple classes- breaks it up with a guest speaker- gets a different style prof to cover material again diff style- take home essay on what has been taught to us 3 times = I know the course material inside and out. Brilliant teaching strategy- now the mayor is in for a debate-awesome class!
Ron is a really a really great professor. He gives take home essay exams which consist of 6 papers ranging from 500-1000 words. It's a lot of work but if you listen in class and read the chapters you should have no trouble in this course. He is very liberal and seems to have slight obsession with the Israel Palestine Conflict. Overall Great prof!
Ron is one of my all time favourite profs! Very knowledgable guy, with an interesting and informed view of the world. Facilitates great class discussion, gives good lectures, and brings in great guest speakers. If you're interested in the world around you, take one of his classes.
The Midterm, one paper, and the Final exam are the only assignments. Class participation is the only other thing you get marks for. Buy used books they are mandatory for the exams .
Ron is an AMAZING professor. Being a student who does best when the mark is based on test results he truly was the best prof. Although for some people this is not the best, keeping in mind both the midterm and the final (that make up most of your final grade) are take-home exams, as long as you pay attention in class you're golden PonyBoy.
Ron is a very knowledgeable professor. He is very humble and gives good lectures. Its tough to take notes as he sometimes rambles, but everything he says is pretty interesting. He is passionate with his work. Gives take home exams and is pretty reasonable with his marking. Overall he is a great professor.
Ron Dart was incredible to study under. He is very knowledgeable and thoughtful. He does his best to ignite the desire to learn in his pupils. Overall just a pleasure to learn from and I would happily take one of his classes again. He brings in great guest speakers.
An amazing prof, understanding life happens outside the classroom, has great stories and links to material, sometimes goes off on little tangents but comes back quickly enough and often the tangents make it more memorable, lectures are pretty intense sometimes material wise, and focuses heavily on textbook
Nice guy and knowledgeable. However, did not like his teaching style which consists of him putting students into groups and discussing the readings. Course is graded on take-home midterm/final and presentation or paper. Expects too much for a lower level course. TL;DR - a lot of effort, did not learn anything
Lectures were interesting but not always on topic. Grading was straight-forward but very dependent on papers.
For a first year class, A LOT of work. Take home exams where you write 6 essays. Lots of readings which isnt awful, but the lectures tend to trail off during lectures too but doesnt really engage so you hust listen. He then just puts you into groups to talk about it. He NEVER responds to emails or messages. 3 textbooks but one was never even used
Ron is a very straightforward professor. His midterm & final exam were both take home & fairly easy. There is also one paper which you choose your own topic. Although his lectures were material heavy I did not find it necessary to attend every single one as the information can be found in the textbook. Overall, I found Ron as an awesome prof!
Not sure if this is common for his courses but four weeks of classes were canceled for us and then 3 more weren't taught by him. He is super relaxed and super smart but it felt really disorganized
Great prof but a lot of writing. Heavy workload with the take home midterms / exams. Otherwise laid back and helps out students.
Ron's class was very chilled out because he gives take-home exams and lets you choose if you want to do a term paper or presentation. he also lets you write down the due date for the paper/presentation so you decide when it's due. He was super nice and honestly there isn't a need to go to class at all
Goes on irrelevant tangents that he includes as essay questions. If youre Conservative, you will definitely do great in this class. There isnt room for open discussion otherwise. There are two take-home exams and one essay. The textbook seems pointless but its the only place youll find different ideas outside of Conservatism. Do not recommend.
He knows what he's talking about, so you're definitely getting your money's worth. He is very kind and understands that life knocks you down sometimes. He's always available to get extra help from and is willing to work with you towards your own version of success. 12/10 would recommend.
oof. he's a lot. when he lectures, he goes off on tangents more so than not except then the tangents are on tests. midterm and final are both multiple take home essays done in a week. I had 2 papers and a group project that same week so writing his 6 papers for a 1st year class was too much. This is not a course for discussion, his ideas are king.
I took this class condensed and it was way too much for a short period. His feedback is not productive. Literally every paper just said "Good, but go deeper". So that's really unhelpful. That being said I learned a lot from him, and though he goes on tangents the lectures weren't too bad.
This is a very difficult first-year course with a huge amount of writing, beware. Insufficient time is given to complete assignments, lacking consideration for other courses that require attention as well. This prof tends to profess his ideologies in class and although he touches on different ideas, he has trouble representing alternative outlooks.
Great professor, very knowledgeable about his classes, knows his material. Mid-terms and finals are 6 essays each, which is overwhelming, but most of the material is covered in the class and book. He makes you buy 3 books, two of which are written by him, so share books with classmates.
Great prof! His class is great, a midterm, paper, and final were the only assignments all semester, though they all involved a lot of writing. He really wants you to learn and engage with the material. He is really easy to talk to and explains everything quite well. If you show evidence of good thought, the course is an easy A.
Ron is a nice guy and he truly knows his stuff and cares about his students. However, especially doing his course online, its hard to understand the concepts and there is an insane amount of writing. My biggest complaint is that hed give massive word counts for take home exams and then give topics that can be summed up in 500 words.
easy marker, though feedback is very limited. only 3 assignments through the class: midterm exam, one paper, and final exam. the exams are take home but each includes 6 essays that range between 500-1000 words per question, despite the questions being answerable in much fewer words. also has right-leaning beliefs. very kind and informative though.
The class is okay, 3 assignments throughout the semester (6-essays, 1-essay, 6-essays). Ron does not use blackboard or even a proper syllabus, you will receive assignments through email. Ron also tends to push his own right-wing ideologies in class. If you have the option of taking this class with anybody else, don't hesitate.
Sometimes through online delivery class seems so impersonal. I only had a few emails back and forth with Ron, but even through that I could tell he's a truly genuine person. His passion for poli sci and philosophy are evident through his lectures. I was sad that his other courses don't line up with my schedule this semester!!
Not sure why everyone says he's a far-right conservative, he's just not inclined to the left-wing ideologies UFV is known for. All told he's a pretty decent prof, a lot of writing, but he's very knowledgeable and I found I learned a lot from him, which I can't say for a lot of other profs at UFV.
His lectures often seen like rambles, it's very hard to know what will be important for the midterm and the final papers. Feedback is pretty vague, just saying that you 'could've dug deeper' with the material but no suggesting how. Assignment word counts seem high for the lack of information given on topics in class.
This prof seems very passionate about politics and philosophy. He is conservative but moderate leaning and it sometimes shows. However, the work he gives is tedious. 6 essays for midterms, 1 essay, and 6 essay final. The questions are fine but does not give a lot of time to complete and gives no feedback outside of a couple of words.
Lectures make no sense because he jumps from different points, never finishing what he is saying and adds random things that have nothing to do with what you need to know, so you have to pick out the important information. He grades hard and doesn't provide any explanation for lost marks. He never answers emails, often missing assignments emailed.
During my academic career at UFV I took five political science courses with Ron, four in-class and the last online. Ron is very knowledgeable and passionate on political philosophy. Though my politics often disagreed with Ron, he appreciated contrarian thinking. Ron is one of the wisest people I know. I consider him a friend and mentor.
