Fantastic lecturer, you won't go to sleep in this class!
enjoyable class
pompous, arrogant, very intelligent, unhelpful.
Best history teacher I ever had!
Excellent material, but don't take it at 8 AM.

Delph is one of the best. He knows his content and loves it, plus he makes it interesting. He is hard, but you learn a lot!
I never liked history-then came Delph! Great guy! Great teacher! VERY interesting lectures. I learned a lot. I actually stayed awake in his class. Have a conversation with him, he's pretty cool.
Very interesting - tells history like a story - very interested in cause and effect. Hard essay exams but helpful material! He is passionate and expects the best!
super
Great, nice guy. Wonderful lecturer; I hated history until Delph turned it into a story. I found myself wondering what happened next, as if I were reading a book. Take lots of good notes, and the essay exams won't be bad at all.
At first I didn't like him, until I realized that he loves what he does and can make anyone enjoy it. Instead of just telling what happened in history, he gives you the why, which is something no history teacher I've ever had has done.
One of the best professors I've ever had. In fact I'd rather call him a teacher. He made history intersting and even more than that intriguing. He's not a names and dates historian. He teaches about the culture and people of the time. Wonderful.
great teacher...you have to study but he tells you what you need to know...makes it very interesting
A great professor - makes me sad that I'm not a history major. His interest in cause and effect makes history more intersting than any other who's taught it to me - not to mention he's a cool guy outside the classroom. GO TO STRATFORD!!
I got a 79% in the class....but for some reason he gave me an A-. So, I can't complain about this guy.
Took his online class. Gave two opportunities for extra credit. I didn't need the extra credit, but did one as insurance. I tried to be creative with it, but he hated that. It is his way or no way. Still, I got an A, but I don't think I'd take him again.
Makes you work hard, but it's definitely worth it. As a history major, I value his efforts to make us students of history, not fact regurgitators. Great class!
Took his online course, which is the first time Ive done that so I have nothing to compare it to. It was more reading than your average history class because of the setup but most of it was interesting. He covers women and every day life in society which is a nice change. But he asks lots of questions on art and philosophy which seem out of place.
The online course requires more reading than most students will be prepared for and the exams are very difficult. Students looking to take his online courses for an easy grade will be sorely socked, those willing to devote more time than usual will score and A or B, but with much dedication.
Alot of reading, but if you do it you should receive a good grade. I really enjoyed reading the material for this course.
The online test's are worded very oddly and are difficult.
I took his on-line class, there was a lot of reading to do. Other than that one discussion question a week and a half page essay. Gave extra credit before exams and then you can do two book reports for extra credit. If you do the work it's pretty easy, and you can always fall back on the extra credit.

I took his online class and it was very hard. Do not take it for free elective, you'll be sorry. If you are are a history major it is worthed cause he cover a lot. A lot of work, reading and I think unnecessary most of them.
Delph is a FANTASTIC teacher. He knows so much and is so energetic about his subject. Being a history major myself, I really appreciate the sincerity he carries about the material. He is upbeat, fun, and knowledgable. The material is not hard, if you pay attention. I certainly recommend this class.
I am taking this class online---so easy. I definately suggest Delph to other students!
Challenging, but he leads the best discussions I've ever had in the classroom.
I put off taking this class, but I wish that I took it before all of my other history classes- it would have helped! This is a tough class, but Delph and the librarians are very helpful, and I learned a lot in this class.
hard class, great teacher!
Knows his stuff. Good @ Lectures. Don't buy the textbook. Essays exams but gives a study guide of possible essay questions. MUST go to every class. Attendence policy. Have to do a 10 page paper. Kind of a jackass about it and grading. But can revise it if needed and raise paper grade one full grade. All in all came out with an A.
Delph's honors HIST 101 class is really interesting if you're a history major. If you're not too into history, I wouldn't recommend it because of the workload. There's lots of studying involved and a lot of critical thinking and analysis on top of remembering a lot of information. But he's a really fun professor who tells you why and not just what.
He gives tons of h.w, especially for his Honors class, but I learned soooo much. He's very passionate about what he is teaching, and I loved every lecture.
Hard class but you learn a lot
assigned way too much reading, and quizes on everything some of us have more than 1 class!
He moves really fast and covers a ton of ground in one lecture. You have to keep up with your notes, and missing a class can get you far behind. Tests are okay because he allows a 3x5 card. But he's a great professor that really knows what he's talking about and is excited about it. He's also very personable.
Fantastic instructor. Dynamic and interesting. Take lots of notes and ask questions about what you don't understand. Best class I have taken in undergrad.
he is the best prof. I have ever had, I highly recommend him
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED - For graduate students or undergrads who are interested in taking a course with someone who has some serious pedagogical chops, take Delph for anything. His assignments focus on teaching you research and writing skills through lots of reading and short writing assignments which, in turn, reflect on the readings.
Before taking Delph's class, i was very nervous about a Middle Ages history class, however, Delph is one of the best professors i have ever had at EMU. While he does give a lot of notes, he is very clear and concise, and makes the topics very interesting. Exams are essays, but he allows a 3x5 card, which is very helpful.I will take his class again
He's amazing on the Florence and Rome trip!
So much fun to listen to.
Really loves the subject. Cares about students. Lectures are awesome and go by too quickly. Makes you want to come to class. Best history professor I've had.
He has a sarcastic sense of humor, and that translates to the way he teaches. The tests were a bit hard, but nothing studying couldn't cure. Allows you to have a notecard with information on it for the tests, which helps. Interesting class, and I don't like history. Overall, good professor.
SO ENTHUSIASTIC. He loves when students get involved. I cannot imagine this man in any other profession. He LOVES what he does. Fast talker but if you're a fast writer all the material is there to ace the tests. Terrible handwriting. Sit up front! You're in for a show...
I wish I would have taken this class in the classroom. the material can get very boring and the exams were a little tough. Online is apparently not the way to go in this class!
DELPH IS AWESOME! I had him for five classes and enjoyed every minute. You should put time into studying your notes, attending class, and preparing for the essay exams. Very rewarding. Truly cares about students and has an awesome way of presenting history. Seems a little intimidating at first, but is ultimately the best professor I ever had!
Delph is amazing! His class is a little tough. We had to read a couple of books, but most were at least semi-interesting and tests are all essay, but he gives you the questions beforehand. I would definitely recommend him though--I love his lectures! And the slides!
This man is amazing. Before his class, I had little to no interest in History, much less a 75-minute-long LECTURE history class. By the middle of the semester, I was looking forward to his class and almost wishing I had it more often. Almost. In any case, he managed to bring history to life for me--I've never experienced that before. Awesome.
I loved Delph! He's really funny and makes the subject genuinely interesting. I loved his class! I went from hating history to loving it and wishing I had class more often. His exams are hard, but just be sure to prepare for them. I got As on all of them, so it's definitely possible to do well!
Delph is a very...interesting professor. He's obsessed with Italy, and is a self-declared raving Marxist. Lectures seem to fly by, but there won't be a moment when you aren't taking notes. He makes the information very interesting. Tests are HARD, but he allows a cheat card. Overall, a great Professor, in my opinion.
For a history major/minor he's a great prof. for someone looking to just get there history credits and don't care, find someone else because he gives a ton of information and the class takes a little work but you'll get a good grade.
The greatness of this prof must be lost over the internet because his online class SUCKS! He does NO teaching; just assigns a TON of reading, expects magic essays and creates VERY poorly worded tests filled with double negatives. He's the kind of prof who tries to make you fail. He must be better in person cause this class SUCKED (even with my A)!!
I feel that I need to let people know the truth about Delph. He is terrible as a teacher. Yes, he knows his stuff but good luck if you take him anyways. He tries to trick you in his tests instead of testing your knowledge. If you have a paper or an essay assignment he grades very hard. STAY AWAY!!!!
Had this prof for multiple classes and have enjoyed each one and plan to take more. His lectures cover a lot and you must be taking notes, but taking notes and studying the readings can get you a great grade on the tests. Plus he allows a note card for the tests, which you really should use as he expects essays to be written well.
Delph is the greatest as long as you love history and have a good sense of humor. if you are not interested in doing the work, coming to class, and really getting into the material then find another teacher. His classes are what teachers always threatened college would be like in highschool. Lots of notes, few assignments, lecture, lecture, lecture
Took his class online, there was a fair amount of reading, not much to complain about. Has short and easy weekly assignments, and grades pretty fairly. Overall a good class and I would recommend to anyone with an interest in history, and especially to history majors.
Delph is an AWESOME professor-- for people who actually want to learn and won't slack off on the work. I took both lecture and online classes from him. They were both fairly difficult, but also interesting enough so that I stayed engaged and motivated the whole semeseter. I got straight A's in his classes. Definitely want to take more from him.
Prof. Delph is an amazing professor but honestly would care little about our ratings. He loves teaching and loves the material he teaches. He expects students to be prepared and doesn't baby them. However, you will achieve a level of knowledge you wont acquire elsewhere. Taking his classes is always a pleasure.
Delph is a freaking sweet prof. He really knows his**** and it shows. He integrates a lot of very useful info into the lecture and reading. it helps solidify the material. If you want to actually get something about the class then this is the guy. He's not going to let you slack off and he WON'T hold your hand. This won't be an easy A.
Delph is one of thee best professors i ever had in college. if you are looking for an easy grade where you can BS your way to a B, then this is not your prof. if you are looking to learn about history TAKE A CLASS WITH DELPH. He always works with you and is VERY fair in his grading. you recieve the grade you earned.
Delph rules. 'nough said. :D
Delph is a fantastic instructor who is disciplined in his craft and efficient in grading accordingly to the work each student performs. It is crucial that you don't miss assignments, because he allows no makeups under any circumstances. His policy brings out the best in students who apply themselves. Excellent all the way!
This class is very interesting and Delph does not dawdle, he gets right down to the main points. No homework really, just a paper that you have most of the semester to do. It can be time consuming, but you have free reign to pick the topic. I would suggest taking 300W first. He is very slow on grading, but provides helpful and insightful comments.
Delph knows his stuff, and makes the class fun and interesting. He is one of the best professors i've had.
GREAT PROF! I had very little interest in the topic prior to class but now his enthusiasm has rubbed off. Makes lectures very clear, relates information better than any prof I've had and truly wants you to succeed. High expectations but doesn't try to trick students, he wants you to do well and love the material. TAKE HIS CLASS!
BEST ONLINE CLASS EVER!
Delph is the best history prof i've had at EMU by far. He is so interesting and knowledgeable on the topics. His assignments are laid out so you know exactly what to do. The 9 page research paper is hard work but extremely rewarding. you dont have to spend much money on texts. Dont miss class, you will regret it!
The best teacher I've ever had. Take this class, he is likable, knowledgeable, and really enjoys teaching. You'll probably learn more from him than the rest of your teachers combined. Test are hard, but he gives you the questions in advance, so if you study hard, you'll do well. Also has simple quizzes and essays throughout. Again: HE IS GREAT.
He's awesome. He makes writing about history very easy and formulaic. I learned a lot of great research skills in this class. He focuses on teaching students how they will need to write for a career in history, and teaches how to make a sometimes boring subject come to life. The class also goes over tips and tricks for reading scholarly sources.
Delph is a great teacher. His lectures are generally interesting and keep your attention. You have to read 3 books, but if you spark note them your fine, except for the leopard. His tests are essays and they are hard, he gives you the questions ahead of time though. Study pay attention and prepare for tests, you get a notecard, you'll do fine
One of the best teachers I've ever had at EMU. If you get the opportunity to take one of his classes, DO IT! His enthusiasm for the topic makes me want to study more. I am a better student for taking his class. 2 papers, a book review and a final essay.
STAY AWAY! Worst class I've had so far at EMU. Tests are confusing. Impossible to get full credit on any paper. Class consumed all of my free time and ruined my 4.0 GPA. If you are taking this class as an elective find something else. I took the online version, maybe he would've been better in person.
Delph's enthusiam and excitement for his job and his lectures is intense. He loves what he does, and wants everyone else to love it to, but damn.... be careful on his midterms and set aside a HUGE chunk of time to prepare. He does not narrow it down at all, 100+ terms, 40 images to study and only 9 (yes, 9) on the test. GOOD LUCK!
Delph is a great teacher. I love how enthusiastic about what he teaches. He is really helpful with emailing and office hours. Although this class was honors and a lot of work, I felt that all the work was within reason. All the test are blue books though, and can be a bit tricky.
I'm so happy I had this for a summer class, I wouldn't have been able to work with him for a full semester. If you don't have the same view/opinion as him you get points taken away, when he asks you for your view/opinion. This course is basically how Christianity and catholic was introduced and who interpreted it.
awesome professor! he loves his job and gives lectures that are so good you dont want them to end. class seems to fly because he is so good at giving the lectures. quizes are easy. you are allowed to use a 3x5 note card for tests and quizes.
Delph just bleeds enthusiasm. And as long as you can keep up with him (lots of notes!), you'll find yourself caring about history too. Not for slackers. Tests are challenging (essay) but he allows 1 3x5 with w/e you want on it and gives you the questions ahead of time. Study. Some opportunities for extra credit. Great class; take it if you can!
Delph's a really good lecturer. Most of the classes were interesting and engaging. You can tell he really loves teaching. Tests are intense, you have to really prepare for them to get a good grade. I'd highly recommend his course!!
Professor Delph is the reason I changed my major to history and the reason I hope to become a professor. He clearly loves teaching, and he starts every lecture by telling you so. He also has a lecture style that keeps the student interested and will throw a few jokes in here and there. I have taken him many times and will continue to do so
Awesome teacher! His demeanor may be kind of intimidating at first, but he isn't that tough of a grader! There are three exams, all blue book, and three essays outside of class. Also, there are two books to read, but it's possible to get away with sparknoting them. It was a bit of work, but I would highly recommend his class!
I took both 327 and 328, and they are amazing courses. I would highly recommend Delph as he is one of the best professors at Eastern. He genuinely cares about his students and history. If you make use of your notecard, you're sure to do fine on the exams.
I love Professor Delph! He has definitely made my first semester here at EMU a real gem. I felt as if he covered all of the material well and always made an effort to answer questions. I found myself craving his class because he made it so interesting.
Delph is the best professor I've had at Eastern! He's so passionate about what he teaches and he's a very funny guy. His lectures can be a lot but as long as you remember to write down names and dates you'll definitely get an A.
Awesome guy, really cares about the subject matter.
This class was almost entirely lecture based, with two book discussion days. He makes it so interesting that the time flies by. Show up for class, take lots of notes and you'll do fine on the tests. He lets you have a 3x5 index card for them, just watch the time. If there are study sessions being offered, I highly recommend you attend them.
I have had Delph twice in college, and he is by far my favorite professor. His lectures are interesting and they prepare you so well for the exam. There are never any surprises on his exams, and he is very accessible and helpful. Delph is truly passionate about history.
Delph was an awesome teacher. He really cares about what he teaches and loves his lectures. Tests are hard but if you study, you should have no problem. You need to be at class everyday.
Delph is one of the most brilliant men I have ever met. He's really quite the character. His lectures are really interesting, but he spends nearly every minute of class on them and he speaks very quickly- I would take 5 pages of single spaced notes in one class period. Very few homework assignments, and he only does essay tests.
He is VERY passionate about what he teaches! I HIGHLY recommend taking notes on a computer because your hand will DIE. Also, his tests are all essays, but he gives you the questions beforehand. He also lectures in such a way that it reminds us how important history really is in our daily lives. 10/10 would recommend.
Dr. Delph is one of the few professors that I've have where you can tell that he really loves teaching history. He teaching style is very effective, and he makes the material very interesting to learn. He will go off tangents occasionally about something he read in the newspaper that day, but he's still one of my favorite professors at this school.
Delph is very knowledgeable, has a huge passion for his field, and deeply cares about his students' success.
Delph really cares about what he's teaching but don't take him as an easy blow of class, you have to really come to learn and if you do you will be absolutely fine
Lots of interesting lectures. You will take lots of notes. Just don't skip, or you'll miss a lot. Notecards are allowed on tests, which is a plus. We read 2 books, which were super cheap on Amazon. VERY knowledgeable about the subject matter. Essay questions given in advance, which is great. Average difficulty. I learned a lot. Recommended.
Delph is fantastic! You can tell he's really interested in the material. You could ask him any question in the world about European history and he'd know the answer about 95% of the time. His lectures are very engaging, but he goes a little fast sometimes so try to keep up as best you can when you take notes!
Never have I ever had a 101 class that starts of with so much reading and a 100 pt exam ONE WEEK in. Also, most of the links for the readings have been broken and not repaired. Avoid taking this class at all costs.
He's an okay guy, but half of the links for the extra readings were always inaccessible. Whenever I'd email him letting him know he'd have an attitude and say it's my fault they aren't working. Just read the chapters, follow along with the study guides for each chapter, and do each TD and W.A. and you should be good.
He's an okay guy. Half of the websites/links for the readings were inaccessible and he seemed to have an attitude about it when I'd email and let him know. Other than that, just read every chapter following along with the study guides, do every TD and writing assignment and you should be good. The tests are super long so study a lot.
The only main problem I have is that a lot of the links to website readings were not available. Also, whenever I would email him, he would take almost 3 days to respond. I feel like this screwed my grade up because I couldn't access those links until last minute when he finally made them accessible/fixed them.
Delph is one of the best profs I've had in my 4 years. He's cool, funny, and his lectures are super engaging. Graded on attendance/participation, 2 scheduled book quizzes, and 3 essay exams. Take DETAILED notes, you'll want them for exams! Exams are DENSE but easy if you go to class/take notes/do readings. You do get a 3x5 notecard for the exams!
Ive taken a few online history courses at emu, and this is by far the easiest one I've ever taken. Exams are open notes, and professor writes up study guides for each exam. Literally easiest A you can get.
Delph was an amazing professor! Took him once already and I'm sure to take him again. Very knowledgeable about his teachings and you can tell he loves what he does. He is easy to reach by email and very responsive, tests were a bit long but if you do your readings you'll be fine.
Great man and a great professor. You should do well if you show up, take notes, and study for your exams. This class has 3 exams, and as long as you pay attention in class and study the slides on canvas that he says contain info from the exam, you should do well. Both books, Beowulf and April Blood, were great reads. You can tell he loves the class
Delph is hands down the best professor I've ever had. If I could take every history class with him I would. He's tough and has clear expectations but he outlines them so well it's easy to get the hang of what he's looking for. This man is truly an expert in his field, he's funny, and I never wanted to skip his class but he's so entertaining.
