I already had my B.S. degree, but no job so I returned to CoM. I thought I knew a lot, but Ron helped me "look at things with a more open view," to question my perceptions and to change the way I used my language. I am very grateful to him and "I believe" the college is very lucky to have him.

I loved this course. I was dreading taking a speech class, but this intrapersonal speech class was very fun and very easy. He had examples for every homework assignment - in fact, for the final project, my group was so mixed racially, and he loved our speech, that he asked us to do it over again, but on film, so he could use it as an example.

I just finished my second class with Professor Gaiz and here is what I've learned: don't trust your first perceptions-check them out. Use "provisional" language-it helps avoid fights. Speak to people-don't read to them. Don't use oral fillers like "Uh" and "Um" - they make you sound stupid. I learned a lot more, but these will stay with me.

PROS: I learned a lot. Runs a happy, friendly class. CONS: Can get touchy on probing questions instead of simply explaining. Can be condescending and dismissive. Tends to laugh at your mistakes. Interesting discussions early in the class vanish in the second half which means interesting and controversal issues in the book are simply ignored.

This is my first class whre public speaking is involved and I dreaded taking it. Not only am I learning about various cultures, I am learning to be a decent public speaker. Prof. Gaiz has really listened to me when I came by his office and I think he is really clear and helpful - not "gronola and hippi" (whatever that means!) TAKE HIM!

This is my 3rd class from Ron. Here are my thoughts: very organized guy with a lot of structure and tons of "A" grade examples posted on his web page. He cuts you no slack in terms of lateness - no matter what reason. Hand in your work either "on time" or early, but don't even try if it's late! Don't like his quizzes (too hard)or this textbook.

I have respect for Professor Gaiz. 1st day of class we get this detailed syllabus and web page of his and he really keeps to everything written. He gets a lot of whiners trying to renegotiate his syllabus, but he sticks with what is written. I like that because I think it's fair and I know I can get the grade I earn if I follow the syllabus!

Professor Gaiz is by far one of the best teachers at COM. From the first day of class he makes it very clear how to get the grade that you want. He has a web site that has examples of every assignment. If you put the time in, it is very easy to get an A. I loved his class!

I have yet to have my first class, but I had a lot of questions about this course. Everytime I e-mailed Mr. gaiz he got back to me - always within a half hour. He has everything linked to MyCom, he has a clear syllabus and he has a sheet that tells you where to get "cheap textbooks." He answered every question I had - and this was during break!

Im glad to see he has a positive rating on this thing. I hear a lot of negativity elsewhere but his class is simple. Just do your work ON TIME and you will be fine. His class is very interesting and only those who do not like doing work to get a good grade would complain!

Already graduated from Cal Poly SLO, but now need to change majors so took this required Spch 128 class. Great class, impassioned and motivational professor. I like his choice of topics, his organization and his availability to help students. ALWAYS answers emails and telephone calls and is almost always in his office for Office Hrs.

Great class! I took it as a co-requisite to the COM RN program and I was not looking forward to taking a course during the summer (particularly since I heard that his course required a lot of work). It ended up being a very interesting, engaging course and I highly recommend it to everyone. Ron is an excellent teacher!

Loved Ron as a person and as a teacher, loved the class and it's teachings. This class is a mixture of Public Speaking and Cross-Cultural Anthropology - what a weird combo - but he makes it really work! Take this class from this professor!

I like that Ron consistently sticks to what he has in his Syllabus. So many whiners try to renegotiate what is clearly written, but he grades according to the syllabus - and I think that his grading is open and fair.He puts a whole bunch of examples online for us to use as guides and I found that helpful!

He is clear, direct, tought grader, and treats one as an adult. He is very approachable and highly helpful, yet he won't hold your hand. He expects highly of everyone, if you can't pull it off he might get tough on you-just like your boss would. Be on time and turn in your work you get a B. Push yourself a bit you get an easy A. Great professor.

Very well organized and clearly explains what he expects of students. Helpful and honest in his critiques, just a lot of students don't try that hard although it is quite straight forward to get an A. My public speaking ability was enhanced through this class.

This class was easy and well organized. Ron was super clear on what he wanted and if you put in effort on your work it would have been reflected through your grade. Even though attendance is mandatory it is worth your while to go to class. I have taken two classes with Ron and I believe he is one of the best that COM has to offer!

Ron Gaiz was extremely helpful and direct. His constructive criticism helped me with speeches in class and when I had to speak in front for the Governor. This class helped me learn to stay within the required time limit and taught me how to organize my speeches. I have several upcoming important speeches to give to legislators and I know I'm ready.

Great teacher. Very clear of his expectations, and what you need to do to succeed in his class from day one. Overall pretty easy class (he made it easy at least) when it comes to comprehension on the subjects that you cover(which can be complicated). He gives you room for improvement and structured criticism, which is crucial in a speech class.

Call him the king of power point. Hes very high strung and seems to get frustrated if you ask a question. He thinks everything is clear all the time but its not. Very dry humor, you get used to if after a while but can be annoying. Believes hes very cultured and spends a lot of time informing you on that when he should be teaching the class.

I can't believe I'm taking the same class as the last reviewer because I have a 200% opposite view. I find Ron really helpful in that he taught me how to write an outline, how to create a hook in my introduction, how not to read to my listeners - it disconnects me, and how to use my visual aids effectively. TAKE him - he's awesome!

Here's my Ron story. A student didn't have her homeowrk manual and she e-mailed Ron telling him she wanted to do the homework, but she didn't know what to do. He drove down to the college from Napa/Sonoma where he lives, ON A SATURDAY morning, copied the homeowrk, went to Kinko's and scanned it and emailed it to her. That's the kind of guy he is!

this teacher is excellent in what he does but he is a little stuck up and his point system he uses for grading is atrocious. he seems to get annoyed by questions asked and gives smart alec answers back sometimes. Take this class but do not expect it to be easy by any means. HW is all on you, you're completely on your own remembering due dates ETC.

Ron,in my perception, begins each class taking roll, telling us what he will cover in the class and then reminding us (in a large powerpoint slide) what it is he wants us to read and what is soon due or coming up. He also puts everything related to the class on the college's Moodle site, including our points to date by the end of the week.

Would take again

I seek to undo an injustice - probably the best (aside from Yolanda) educator I've ever had, period. I was also probably, with classdrops excluded, his worst student ever. Tough, fair, but extremely invested in every student he ever worked with - as a quiet student you cannot hope for such an amazingly human and wonderful teacher. Miss you, Ron.
