Great Instructor.. If you need help..he will bend over backwards for you... very fair and laid back professor. Grades fairly and very personable. I put this class off for 3 years because I was dreading it.... it has turned out to be one of my favorite classes...by far my favorite instructor... He helped me whenever I needed it...

Prof Guthrie is a great teacher. He is very fair and he let you know exactly what he will cover on the test he is crystal clear with his study guide. I would recommend this instructor any day the best.

Excellent prof! He is so helpful and very approachable! I didn't buy the book but I aced this class no sweat. He knows what he's talking about and is very clear about what he expects from you. Always smiling. so funny. I hate English but he made it fun.

Guthrie is my favorite teacher! He loves english and has great stories to tell. The class goes by quickly. He wants his students to pass, so go by his office and get input from him on your papers. We take trips to the library to work on papers( starbucks!! ). Guthrie is a great teacher and I recommend him for all of your English classes.

Ron is a great teacher, and he is willing to help anyone and everyone whenever they need it. He wants everyone to excel. The only problem is his essays are not easy. I'm in his 101 class now, and he grades ONLY the essays extremely strictly. Everything else is easy. I would recommend him to only people who have fantastic writing skills.

Guthrie is the best Lit/English professor at UAB. I've had him for both English and Literature. He keeps the class interesting with his stories and makes Literature fun! The tests come from his lectures in class so make sure you go to class. He is always willing to help if you have questions on essay topics. Highly recommend Guthrie!

Mr. Guthrie is super nice and very willing to work with students. You can email him any question and he'll respond almost immediately. The first paper is usually the hardest, but as you progress you learn his grading style so you do better and better. Overall, I liked him.

Mr. Ron Guthrie is an excellent facilitator of writing. His agenda is to enlighten his students. He also expects creativity and critical thinking when writing essays. His essays involve many analysis' of rhetoric, comparatives, and reflections; however, the essays promote personal growth as a writer.

Wonderful Professor! He is very funny and is one of the few teachers that will actually sit down with you and help you. He is extremely understanding and doesn't just tell you what you have done wrong. He actually gives good feedback to tell you what you are doing right. By far my favorite professor at UAB.

He is the best English professor I have had.

Defiantly a great teacher for this required class. 3 4-page essays and 2 essay revisions, ending with a 4-page reflection essay and a portfolio of all of your years work. NO final, NO homework (outside of the papers), and gives you class days to work on assignments. Most days he lets out early.

Ron is a great teacher. If something is unclear, he is willing to explain. Attendance isn't mandatory but after a certain amount of absences, points will be deducted. He does not curve grades. What you have at the end of the semester is what you have. He grades by a point system so if you have a 79.9% (C) in class, it will remain a C.

I have taken Prof. Guthrie for both English Comp I and American Lit I. I have thoroughly enjoyed both classes. He is very laid back and treats you more as a peer than as a student. He grades very fairly. He is always available to help, and he responds to emails quickly. Show up and do the assignments and there's no reason you should get below a B.

Probably the best English teacher that I have ever had. He taught me a lot in the class considering EH 101 was my first experience with writing papers in MLA. Mr. Guthrie hands down is one of the best English professor's I have had. You have 6 essays total, which two of them are revisions. He is very clear and concise on what he wants you to do. Always willing to help you inisde and outside of the class. He grades pretty tough but it helps you in the long run. Would suggest him to anyone.

He gives awesome lectures and really ties in real life and personal stories to keep class interesting! You won't want to miss a day of his class. He is extremely fair and wants everyone to pass. Just ask for help along the way and take advantage of the writing center!!

The Stephen King special topics course was incredibly insightful and fun because of professor Guthrie's teaching style. Reading matters, and the material is easy to get interested in. The grading criteria is super clear, and class discussions are always lively and entertaining. Professor Guthrie genuinely cares about his students & class content.

He is very funny and nice professor.I had to write about 4 essays and revise one of them about twice for the grade, but he gives great feedbacks, which made it easier. When there is any problem, I recommend you to visit him by making an appointment. He will actually try to HELP you. If you show your effort, he will too.

hes super funny and likes to joke around. the class is talk-heavy (read the passage before class bc all the class will consist of is a class discussion). he really likes participation and dont be afraid to say anything at any time. he loves listening to the class talk. lots of pop quizzes. hes a pretty lenient grader. do your work.

Ron is an awesome professor, seriously one of the easiest classes I have ever taken. He takes attendance, but basically, all you need to do is show up to do well in the class. He does have pop quizzes on readings, but they are super easy. He is super chill and I have gotten a 100 on every test so far. If you need to take lit, take it from Ron.

I took Ron for EH107 and 212 and he was AWESOME the readings kept me interested, and the papers weren't too bad either. For 212 we had 12 "pop quizzes" that were super easy. His test were kind of tough for me but I passed his class with a B. If you ever need help with an assignment you can talk to him after class or make an appointment with him.

Take professor Guthrie if you get the chance! You will not regret that decision. He is so helpful and knowledgeable about the material he teaches. Read when you are told to and you will do fine. He makes the material interesting even if you hate literature. He gives great feedback and he is very approachable. One of the best professors at UAB!

Ron is probably the best professor I have had at UAB. He truly cares about his students and wants you to pass, you just have to put in the effort or reach out to him if something goes wrong. Such an easy class. He provides all the reading material and gives written lectures that are very easy to understand. Material was interesting and the professor was super nice and funny. The tests and quizzes are essay questions, but not difficult, and there's only one big essay.

Hes really chill. Im taking EH 101 online and all you have to do is 4 essays and 4 outlines. Its Fr not bad at all.

He is such a great professor. We wrote 4 papers. No tests. He is very helpful if you need to reach out to him at all. Answers questions thoroughly.

Amazing Prof. Was easy to understand information from. Textbook required but I didn't really use mine. Have a total of 4 essays. Very helpful and funny. Overall amazing guy. One of the easiest classes I've taken.

I had him for 101 & 102 all he wants you to do is provide clarification on the topic that you are writing about (you choose your own topics). He is supper supportive and gives amazing feedback and will help you out if you need help.

I absolutely LOVED this class. Professor Guthrie is amazing. He responded quickly and gave good feedback. If you don't understand something, just ask. There weren't too many assignments, and he graded easy. You can really tell that he loves his job and cares about his students. 10/10 recommend

4 essays, 4 pages each, all with outlines. End of semester reflection paper and you have to refine one of your papers. Easy A, don't have to show up. Very nice guy and he gives excellent feedback. Grading criteria is very clear on what to write.

TAKE THIS CLASS! THIS MAN IS THE BEST THERE IS! There are three tests total, all of which are not timed or proctored (they do take a long time though). The classroom setting is more like a discussion and very laid back. If you go to class, you'll know everything you ever need to know. He's genuinely an amazing professor.

Dr. Guthrie clearly cares about the success of his students. There are little quizzes on the short stories read outside of class. Several movies are viewed and discussed within class. There are two exams. These are lengthy exams, but not difficult at all. He provides extra credit opportunities. Overall, he is a phenomenal professor.

One of the best professors I've ever had! He gives really good feedback on your essays and very flexible with deadlines if you ask for an extension. Class was enjoyable and I was never stressed. He is only picky about MLA format and meeting the page requirement for the essay. Bonus point opportunities; hard not to make an A! Ended with a 99!

Professor Ron taught an amazing semester of Lit Ideas: SciFi Lit & Film. His easy-going teaching style and always friendly/personable attitude make him a great teacher. Professor Ron is a great instructor to have for any English course, but if you are a fan of science fiction, then his EH-213 Sci-Fi Lit & Film class is a must take!

Love Ron and he is truly the best professor to take any English course from. As long as you meet the deadlines, page requirement, and format correctly, you will do great. He is super uplifting and encouraging. Trust me, if you just COMPLETE the work, you are guaranteed an A. Books not necessary, passages easily found online.

Good class, although I wish other people talked more. Very lecture-heavy, and exams are based on themes discussed in lectures, so they'll be easier if you go to lecture. Ron is an excellent professor and is really understanding. All assignments are quick quiz or two almost every week, 3 exams, and a final essay (4 pgs), so it's not very hard.

Mr. Guthrie was AMAZING! I loved his class and had him for Honors 101 and 102. His main goal was for his students to appreciate writing and to find a creative spark. I was taught that writing was strictly formal but Mr. Guthrie taught me how to find my voice in writing and I started to love it again. PLEASE take his class!!!

Fun professor! Easy class! We pretty much just read short stories, watch movies, and take quizzes, and 2 exams with just essay questions based on stories and movies. One final essay which was enjoyable to write about. Overall amazing class and professor!

Mr. Guthrie is amazing. He is so nice and extremely understanding, and never once dropped his smile, even when he was not having the best day. Usually, I have to ask a lot of questions to understand instructions fully, but he explains everything well and he does all his lectures in an interesting manner. I would %100 recommend him.

His lectures are pointless in 101, but at least he cares for every single one of his students. I have never had a teacher spark passion in me like Mr. Guthrie. He often makes class optional, and strives to inspire every student taking his class. Very easy going and wonderful to talk to. Could say a million good things about him.

The professor is a great person and was very helpful in terms of giving feedback and improving my writing skills. Furthermore, he mixed fun things in his lessons and gave incredible stories! Ron is a standout professor from my first semester at UAB. He reads your whole paper, not just the first paragraph, which is refreshing. He gives great feedback and is always willing to help out if you are confused. There were three extra credit opportunities that were easy to achieve. Great guy, great teacher, great course!
