Interesting, funny, knowledgable. Kind and helpful to students too!
nice guy- very funny and intelligent - i wish i had really put some effort into this course- i really enjoyed it even despite my lack of effort.
BORING, BORING, BORING! I only took his class because it fulfilled some requirement. He tries way too hard to be funny, he doesn't give ANY feedback on papers, and always calls on the same people in class.
Preaches (no pun intended) about the importance of a system of beliefs--then tells you what is right or wrong about what you believe in. His lectures were SO boring, his jokes were NOT funny, he never held office hours--impossible to get in touch with.
It's not a bad idea to take this class if you need to fill a requirement, can do a couple of papers, and don't want to be bothered in class because he'll never call on you unless you raise your hand!
I think he's great. It's one of the most interesting classes I've ever taken.
the sex love and religion class was amazing, it should be a requirmet for life... and those majoring in religion must must take it .... this man is intelligent and has so much info to put forth
Excellent lecturer. One of few hunter profs actually prepared for class with challenging points and discussions. Only have to do a few short papers, no tests or term papers. Very interesting material. Helpful nice guy. A bit huffy and stuck up sometimes. do your work, be engaged and he's the best.
Long is one of my favorite professors at Hunter. He is smart, funny, and patient with all the idiots in the class. He gives great readings and lectures very clearly. His assignments are easy and he's a fair grader if you aren't a total moron like most Hunter students.
Great professor...you should really take one of his classes
PROFESSOR LONG IS ONE OF THE EASIEST PROFESSORS AT HUNTER!!! SO WHAT HIS READINGS ARE BORING IF U PAY ATTENTION ,TAKE NOTES AND WRITE YOUR PAPERS YOU'LL PASS!!! PLUS HE'S KINDA HOT TO BE OLD!!!=)
The readings are extremely boring and confusing at times...When he finally hands back your paper, you'll notice he doesnt actually read the entire thing just a lil from the beginning and a lil from the end, and then he'll give you some half a$$ grade like an A-/B+
Very boring class, however he does let you re-write papers which is a ++, He does makes good points once in a while but it is soooo boring.
Boring and Hard , Bad Combo
A real son of a ****. His readings are difficult and boring. He doesnt like it when people disagree with him and he is a horrible grader. He only reads the beginning of your paper and grades based on your writing style not content. He lets you redo your paper but it isnt much help.
An amazinv educator. Highly informative. Class act.
He is an easy professor. Never calls on you, talks most of the time, jokes a lot. I feel he is very intellegent but still cannot completely convert his knowledge to students. He is very theatrical especially in the beginning. His papers are easy and completely reflect what he said in class.
He's reall hard to understand but obviously brilliant and an easy grader (thank god)
How could anyone say bad things about prof.Long. He is just great...and if you can't understand his lectures...then there must be something wrong with you. He is intelligent and conveys the ideas rather easily.
Dr. Long is an EXCELLENT professor for those who want a rigorous training, especially prior to graduate study in Religion. He is well versed in Classics and in Early Christianity, and his depth and breadth of knowledge comes through in his teaching. He is encouraging to students, and will push you to improve your writing. Not an EASY A, but earned.
Well, Dr. Long is smart and he knows that. He can be annoying and occasional tandrums should be anticipated. He is an intriguing personage, I think he's gay but I'm still not sure, ah whatever. He has a an air about him sometimes that makes him unapproachable. Oh, don't try asking for an independent study with him, It's impossible!
He is sooo annoying and he makes you read so much stupid stuff. He is tough and NOT a easy A. Good LucK to those who take him, and one more thing he even said that he is tough on Grammar.
Lots of readings. He treats it like an intensive writing class. 3 papers, no exams. he really is helpful. you can do well by simply paying attention! but, make sure you know your readings. he can and will give pop quizes if he has doubts that anyone read.
great lecturer but does not really care about the work you turm in. doesn't return papers for months at a time. crap shoot.
The dude is nice, but holy**** is it the most boring class ever!!! i like religion a lot and i could barely pay attention, the way he teaches is very wierd and he tends to go off topic and into different things all at once, taking notes is hard.
hes a fun and cool guy, but what a hard grader. bring a recorder to class cause he speaks fast, and youll probably miss out on important info. the class itself is very interesting, but again, hes a very hard grader.
Class was really interesting. He is a little difficult when grading and you really should pay attention in class because a lot of that you will/should include in your essay. He does take a very long time to give papers back.
I thought this class would be great. But Long talks a lot without saying much. Very superficial, not a deep or interesting class. irrelevant and boring interpretations and focus. if you're really into religion don't take him. he is nice and friendly, although a little weird.
VERY INTERESTING CLASS, LOT OF READING,EASY TO WORK, BUTTTTTTTTT TAKES A WHILE TO RETURN PAPERS
Although attendance is mandatory he doesn't take it that often. Easy grader. Talks a lot, can be boring, but is always enthusiastic about his work, which you have to respect. Always repeats things a million times so everything is clear but he does take a while to return papers. Papers are always short and simple.
One of the easiest classes I've ever taken. Attendance is not mandatory, i barely went, and i never participated and i still got an awesome grade. Can be a little boring, but if you do some of the readings you can get a good grade on your paper. No final, only 3 papers for the whole semester, super easy. I think he's pretty funny and a nice guy.
Amazing!
great prof. really clear, explains pretty much anything you ask. really easy class, do the reading and you will learn a lot. sense of humor makes class fly by. awesome class! i wish i could take more with him, take this class!
A really easy class (and rather interesting!). I didn't get too great of a grade in this class, but that's of my own fault. If you do the readings and write really good response papers, you'll do really well. (I should've taken my own advice!) A very awesome professor.
He is very interesting as a person but the class was hmmm. he assigns 10 books for the class and ends up using like 3, waste of money but he is very easy, full of character, class can be sometimes interesting only asked for 3 papers then drops the lowest
This class seemed like a good idea at the time but we spent hours listening to him tell us what we read in his book. When he got the mid semester recommendations he was all hurt and tried to be less redundant. But the class is easy. Women are barely discussed.
Took Long in 06. He is a great professor! I remember receiving a D and 2 C's, but ended up with a B+ in the class. He is crystal clear with his lectures and extremely helpful during office hours. He is very picky with what he wants on his papers though. Grades mostly on improvement. I recommend him!
Total waste of my time! He speaks for the entire class about nothing. He goes on rants and in the end you have no idea what he said. He assigns things to read for hw but the next day summarizes the entire thing so there is no need to read. wasted money on 5 books i'll never read. Really difficult grader on papers. Don't take him!
I hate writing papers n reading long-never ending papers n im not religious at all but for some reason this became my favorite class. He increased my interest in every topic,I felt that his criticisms improved my writing and passed w/an A.One thing; his vocabulary is so advanced I really did bring a dictionary to understand him lol hes great though
He is very easy!!!!But also boringgggggggggg. The books he picks are extremately boring I couldn't even get through the first page. He is a really fair grader and just make you write 3 papers. Atendance is not mandatory and you could do anything in class and he wouldn't care.
Long is great.he's extremely kind, funny,he loves what he teaches.id hang with him.class is easy but still interesting and thought provoking.he grades on improvement, and will let you bring up low grades.if you get a bad grade on paper just ask how it can be fixed,he'll basically tell you what to say. he's down. take his class.
The worst professor ever. He is a horrible professor. He grades really hard and on top of that he is really boring. You waste your money on books you don't read them because he summarize everything. I recommend for you not to take this professor.. He is horrible THE WORST
Long is probably the biggest hoot ever. He's smart, SO FUNNY, entertaining, and not opposed to tailoring a class to the students in it. Yeah, his vocabulary is extensive, but.... welcome to college? He's one of the only teachers that could potentially make you feel like you're going to an ivy league... A+ Long. A+.
amazing professor. makes you buy a lot of books but you dont even have to read it because he summarizes everything. reads the first two paragraphs of your essay and gives you a grade (make sure theyre strong). very slow grader though but interesting. he'll make a joke about his ties.
Tough grader, but hysterical in class! He'll ask for short papers but you will need to be VERY CONCISE! All his lectures contain everything you need to know for your papers so attendance is a MUST! Don't be discouraged, he's tough as nails, but such a wonderful professor!
Awesome professor! The material is interesting.. 3 papers are given in replacement of exams, he's not an easy grader but if you show him you understand the material.. you'll do excellent!
Professor Long is really a great teacher. His lectures are really something else. He makes the class interesting. However, you must take good notes during class and make sure to read the assigned readings before class. His classes are very enjoyable but you must put effort into the 3-4 papers.
Pretty easy class. Just write four papers after actually reading the stuff and you will be fine. He is an interesting lecturer who keeps things moving. Be warned: you must be able to deal with a religious point of view in this class. He does not force it on you directly, but all the authors are writing from a perspective that assumes religion.
Prof Long and Prof Huffman are my two very favorites in the religion department (though Profs Sproul, Haltenberger, Rhodes, Weinfeld are all amazing too) He is so intelligent, so thoughtful, and you learn so much. I found him a bit intimidating, but I think that might be because of my giant crush on him!
Really relax class but He is a Tough grader! No exam but only 3-4 papers, but if you are not this major, you may get a C/B-.He always give this kind of grade which will confuse you, but he is quite intersting person, not a bad choice if you need w class. Before you revise your paper ,office hour may keep change. sometimes forget attendence sheet:)
he is a tough grader. if you are an English major then you can get an A. you have to do 3 to 4 papers but that is the headache for whole semester.
This class was okay. I was disappointed it wasn't more fun, guess I expected too much from the professor after reading how funny he is on RMP. Most of the material is VERY dense and he is a tough grader. He is very knowledgeable though, and he is good to take if you're a Religion major. But if you're not--like I'm not--reconsider this class.
After the first half of this class, theres really not much to learn. The professor gives grades on an unaccountable basis (so you'll get an A- because your paper wasn't 'interesting' or you put the title of the book in quotes) Overall he's a good teacher.. just not great/amazing
Awful professor. Never returns papers on time. Illegible handwriting. Stuck up attitude. Generally, this is a class to sit in on, not to actually endure for 13 weeks.
this professor has a lot to offer but too arrogant. Can be condescending when answering students questions. Interesting material but lengthy drawn-out required readings. 4 papers per semester (no tests) but ridiculously tough grader. Offers rewrite option and sometimes doesn't even give a new grade for complete reconstruction. wouldn't recommen
This class was interesting. You could tell that he is interested in religion. As long as you do the readings, you will be fine on the essay. He grades demandingly sometimes, so make sure to ask for help if you are not doing as well as you want to. Also, there are no tests, only 4 essays. Over all, I had a good experience in this class.
I took this guy for homosexuality in world religion out of pure interest and no prior classes in religion - which was totally my fault. I've never fully hated a class until this one. If you're a religion major you'll be happy but otherwise SEEK ELSEWHERE. He also never returned anything before the withdraw date so I just had to drop it.
I took his religion and sports class. Even if you LOVE religion and ADORE sports and think it will be SO INTERESTING - DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! RUN FAR FAR AWAY! if you are just an average student looking too fill a GER, RUN FARTHER!
Worst professor ever. He doesn't give tests but four writing paper which he never explain what he looking for . He is the toughest grader ever. Do yourself a favor and never take him. I am a really good student but now this prof. Will ruin my gpa.
I've taken 3 classes with this professor- Rel 362.54, Rel 309, Rel 340. You have to read and write, but if that is not a problem for you, you will like this class. He is an old school professor, knowledgeable and has a sense of humor. No tests or quizzes. He challenges you on papers, overall I liked his classes
he is okay not that bad. Gives 4 papers to write throughout the semester but takes FOREVER to grade them. Class can get a bit boring after a few weeks and the books are boring as well. however the materials are interesting. must attend class to get a good grade. everything you need for your paper you will get from his lecturs
GPA KILLER! such a boring class, papers are boring, hes boring! and plus he a tough grader. i suggest take this class if your interested in the subject. Not for GER requirements.
A hard grader and such a boring class. Thought it would be interesting but I dreaded going. Even though he only took attendance at the beginning of the school year you basically have to go since the essays are based off of his lectures which there are three of, no tests or quizzes, so your grade is based off of his strict grading of three tests!
Tough grader! However, there are no exams and quizzes. He only required us to write 3 out of 4 essays because we didn't have enough time to do the last one. Really boring class though...
Took him for Religious Meanings of Love & Sex, and definitely another class next semester. He's got a big sense of humor for this class and he clarifies things you don't understand. He's a tough grader but when you need to rewrite a paper, he tells you exactly what he wants and exactly what he's looking for. Would take again.
I take him for religious meaning of death & struggle everyday to not fall asleep. He's super boring and often rambles off topic. He takes eight years to hand back graded papers and actually cancelled papers because he said he "fell asleep when he had time to grade our essays". This might seem great but the other papers just end up counting for more
Prof Long seems passionate about what he's teaching but is just a terrible teacher. His class has no structure or flow, he just jumps from thought to thought. So unless you've heavily studied rel before you'll be lost. Harsh grader, gave my paper a D saying it was well written but he didn't agree with my ideas. Gives no real rubric for assignments
The class has been very interesting and enlightening. The only issue regards the grading of the papers. Very difficult to obtain a good grade based on personal textual interpretation of text and prompt. Would not recommend this professor if the student doesn't have the time . Papers not graded on a basis besides his personal preference.
He is so irresponsible. He doesn't go by his syllabus. You barely have an understanding of where you are in the semester. He says we have total of 6 essays, but only gives three mandatory ones, and makes rest optional, which trust me, you need to do them in order to get at least a B if you're lucky. He doesn't give back essays on time.
I wouldn't recommend this class to my worst enemy. Confusing material, highly unclear in what he wants. The paper prompts were vague and most people who answered the prompt (including myself) were told to include things that didn't have to deal with the prompt. Regretted this.
Professor Long is an old school teacher and I think that's why people don't like his class. He doesn't give you the answers but gives you the tools to find them yourself. Take his class if you want to think deeply - but expect to do the intellectual heavy lifting. In the age of educational commodification, students aren't used to his grading style.
Prof Long made a subject I didn't have much interest in super accessible! He's clearly very passionate about the subject, and does a great job at making everything relatable and funny! He does take a super long time to grade, but he is also very lenient with deadlines. Class discussions were always thought-provoking. Would definitely recommend!
He loves the subject but he's not good at explaining it. During lecture he jumps around with whatever thought will come to him next. He gave 3 mandatory papers which is your whole grade and there is no midterm or final and he rarely took attendance. If your papers don't reflect his opinions about the topic being discussed, don't expect to do well.
Probably the worst professor I've ever had. His lectures are very vague and the assignments are graded poorly if they don't reflect his opinion. I received two c-'s on my papers, and when I went to his office hours to re do the paper he did not change the grade. When I went back the 2nd time he didn't even offer to give input on what I did wrong.
Professor Long is one of the best professors in the religion department. His writing assignments are interesting. His lectures are concise and informative. His readings are interesting. He will help improve the quality of your writing . He is easy-going and cares about his students. He puts a lot of though into his courses.
he is very irresponsible with a lot of things. His lectures are very vague and he does not follow the syllabus he gives in the beginning of his class. He said our grade was based on 4 papers but changed that to 3 considering he took months to grade just one paper. He allows re writes but hands back the paper so late that you don't have a chance.
Hardest grader I've ever had but there is a curve. He gives you all the readings and tells you everything you need to write the papers in his lectures. Readings and lectures are risqué, very interesting. He's really disorganized and takes forever to hand papers back but there's no penalty for late papers and he allows rewrites.
Long is obviously very passionate about his subject which is nice, but his lectures are vague and touches the general points in the readings. My biggest pet peeve with him is that he never grades the papers on time, it took one month for them to get back to us! His papers are really difficult since he wants them a certain way..
Dont take his class, just dont. He seems passionate about the subject but his papers are never graded on time, the instructions are VAGUE. When he finally gave the paper back there had been two more papers due. There were barely 2 corrections yet a low grade. He doesnt use a power point and barely makes notes on the board.
The class itself was pretty average, it can get very boring if you are not interested in the subject. I found dosing off majority of the time. He is a ridiculously tough grader and is very vague with what he wants for his papers. He takes FOREVER to grade papers, by the time we got one paper back 2 papers had already been due, avoid at all cost!!!
Prof. Long is extremely profound. His lectures are ALWAYS inspirational and poignantly beautiful. His class is about such deep concepts like the meaning of death across cultures and time periods. He is always available for help with intriguing concepts and is deeply caring. Take his class if you want to expand intellectually... !
So much reading. The lectures were decent, sometimes boring. Each assignment is a 3 page paper and we ended up only having 4 assignments. There are rewrites if you don't do well on the papers and he gives good feedback about what you can improve on.
Horrible plz avoid this prof if u dont wanna make ur life miserable. He never likes the way you write. The worst professor at hunter
Don't know why Long get a bad rap. Class is straightforward - readings, lectures, a few essays. Easiest writing intensive ever and you get most of the essay info from the lectures. Knows his stuff. Does take forever to grade work but allows rewrites. Don't think it will be an easy b.s. course because it's Religion - it's still college-level work!
He immediately TOOK OFF HIS MASK to lecture in-person in a small crowded room! Do not take this class. He is very comfortable risking your health!
He was great, I wrote down everything from lectures and easily wrote the papers. No participation necessary and paper topics were not too difficult. Very knowledgeable and nice guy!
Prof. Long's class was great, but you do need to heavily rely on lecture notes to pass the class as he gives all the answers to paper prompts there. This was a very interesting and engaging class, but like mentioned before, he is very late on grading. There is a grading curve to the papers though and he allows rewrites.
I had him for REL 251 and he was not bad, his lectures can be boring but it is super important to take notes because it will help with the essay which for most may not be easy. He is horrible with returning work, it took him a month to read 2 one page essays, so beware of that. Otherwise he was a pretty fair professor but take notes, trust me.
He knows what he is talking about. He is very into what he is teaching. One problem is that he returns the papers late. He is a tough grader. Another con is that he gives a lot of information all at once which can be hard to keep up with. He understands due dates and people's situations very well.
He is a knowledgeable person. However,my experience during this semester was fine until the last 2 weeks. He gave us our first paper back at the end of November. His prompts are so vague it is difficult to understand what he is looking for. Find another professor, his lectures are boring if you aren't interested in religion and he grades harshly.
I did not recieve any papers back until the last week of November. The paper in question was only 1 pg and was submitted on oct 4th. The 3 pg papers he assigned had minimal feedback only on the first page. Lectures are repetitive and boring while prompts for papers are broad and unspecific even though he seems to want a very specific response.
He gave 0 feedback and gave no reason on why you got that certain grade. He gets really passive aggressive and verbally attacks students if they ask for their paper back. Took him MONTHS to give back one paper. On email, he called me presumptuous and rude for asking if I can email my paper since I had covid.
Lots of reading, but if you go to every class you will have what you need. That being said each lecture was long and boring, most of his words were confusing and you'll have to piece them together yourself. He seemed nice but if you say something he doesn't like his attitude is nasty. His grading was extremely slow, with little to no feedback
