If you like to hear someone talk about himself for 3 hours a week, you will love this class. He is so busy being proud to be a "non-traditional" male, that he forgets we are there to learn, not stroke his over-inflated ego.

I think he is quite possibly the most interesting professor I have had at this college. The work is fun, class is fun, and it's not hard to learn the material and get an A!What more could you ask for?

Dr. Matson is a very enlightened individual. Both men and women can learn a great deal about themselves and their relationships from his class. He is very pleasent and you can tell he enjoys what he is doing.

Good teacher, starts a lot of interesting conversations within the class, teaches you a lot by applying it to stuff you would actually listen to. Tests are pretty hard and there aren't a lot of points in the class so you have to study and pay attention as well as go to the class. Good guy

Matson is interesting and exciting to listen to, but spouts off too much personal opinion to be considered at professor. I'm not sure where he gets any of his information. If I want to listen to someone extremely biased, I'll watch TV, not pay $300 for what is supposed to be a class.

Very easy class, and he grades fairly. He'll adjust the curve for the whole class if they don't perform as well as he'd like. Also, he'll ask questions on the test about his own opinions, so listen carefully to his ramblings in lecture. Overall, easy 'A!'

I learned more useful life lessons in my rock climbing class. Guys, only take this class if you want to hear women complain about the men they choose to date ALL HOUR LONG. Easy A, drops, the worst of your 4 tests. Must submit 3 writings but they are all short and easy. I had to read the readings to get a good grade but the girl beside me never did

I am not sure how people can dislike this guy. He is biased but he challenges people to think about the way they view gender and if you still disagree with him he will still respect that. There are 3 writings that you have to turn in and you can get 100% even if you disagree with him. I took this at 7:30 and havce no problem getting up for it.

He does give a lot of opinion, and readily admits to being very biased. But he back up his opinions with sound reasons. I didn't always agree with him, but I always saw where he was coming from. He only asks that students back up their opinions. Great class for the open minded, don't take it if you can't stand opinions other than your own.

Dr. Matson is a fabulous professor. I went to class every day eager to learn. He holds nothing back and provides various views of topics for discussion. His lectures are both informative and comical. He speaks opinion a lot but it is always backed by facts and research. I would recommend this course to anyone. My favorite class at WSU yet!Easy A-B

Funny and interesting man, makes class not so boring like other professors. A little biased in his lectures. Notes are given in pre-printed form and tests are not difficult.

I had Matson for SOC 111 and American Male and enjoyed them both a great deal. Matson is an excellent prof. :)

I have taken Intro to soc, American male, romantic relationships, and psych of personality with Dr. Matson, and I have loved every minute of it! Becuase of him, I changed my major, because he has such a passion for sociology. By far the best professor at WSU, probably the country!

Very interesting and fun person. He is very passionat about his teaching. Easy A. Just make sure you don't miss the atendance days. I got a 174; an A is 175. I missed one attendance day for 5 pts. He even allowed us to throw pies at him to raise money for cancer victims. Cool dude.

He is AWESOME! The best teacher I've had, by far. I wish he taught more classes so I could have him more. His lectures are so interesting and he relates things to real life so its easy to understand. You actually have to do the readings and show up on the attendance days, but if you do its an easy A.

Great guy and good lecturer. Largest class on the campus (over 450 students). Lets some drone on occasionally, but very much in control of class. Work is straightforward and grades are fair. Tests thorough, but not too difficult if you read the book. Easier than most classes by a long shot. Sometimes hard to tolerate his liberal do-gooder viewpoint

Nice guy, easy class...really didn't care for his feminist take on masculunity though and had a lot of liberal axes to grind, and I'm no diehard conservative. Politics aside, his class is a breeze...just don't buy into everything he says. He even calls his wife "life partner." The world isn't a candy shell of euphemisms; he needs a dose of reality

I think Matson is probably one of the best instructors I've ever had. He makes the lectures fun and interesting with not too much busy work. Can be quite a bit of reading, but if you attend class and pay attention it is easy.

Dr. Matson is a knowledgeable person. Although sometimes I don't agree with what he said, but I still see the points he was trying to make. If you attend class daily and do your reading, you will likely earn an A!

I highly recomend him to EVERYONE!!! mandatory attendance 6 days per semester. easy assignments. lots of articles to read, but if you pay attention to lecture it is not mandatory. lots of notes. He is very energetic and happy all of the time. American Male (Men and Masculinity) is a great class to take!!!

Cool teacher. Not a difficult class. Just read the books and notes...you'll be just fine.

Very easy A. If you halfway pay attention, you'll be fine. Extremely interesting man. However, he will verbally beat you if you pull out a cell phone, arrive late to class or disagree with him.

I was told to take "American Male" before this man retires and was glad I did! He has a flawless lecture style, grabs your attention, but beware! No cells phones, lateness, and attendance is important! If you think you will be able to skate by, think again before taking this class. Just do the work, show up, and you'll be fine.

Easy A Class, random attendance so always go to class!! He's funny, easygoing, and pretty interesting. I got an A with minimal effort, I just skimmed the readings, though there were alot! I aced everything, and didn't have to take the final. Try hard in the beginning.

If you are going to school to LEARN, don't miss the chance to take an objective look at the (C)aucasian (H)eterosexual (M)ale, something we do not do in today's society (or in history). Since the C. H. M. is the measuring stick for the rest of us, a lot can be learned about imposed and controlled social norms. Extremely interesting class!

He is an awesome teacher!! His lectures are very interesting. He is very down to earth and extremely fair in his grading. Make sure that you go to class because he takes random attendance. Reading the book will also help, because he doesn't talk about them in lecture very much but you will be tested over the material.

Soc 308 He gives you a syllabus telling you EXACTLY what he wants, follow it and it's an easy A. If you do article reviews dont forget to make sure it is the right amount of paragraphs! Enjoyable class.

Very interesting and fair teacher. You'll get an A if you follow his steps for assignments to the letter, read what he assigns, and skim the text. That's pretty fair I'd say.

Very good speaker. Not so sure I learned very much, seemed like common sense; you just don't think about it too much so it can be interesting. Must attend class all the time to make sure you get the attendance points for non-specified days; kind of a pain in that sense. Only got an A cuz of all attend. points. Must read book; MC tests can be hard.

It was just a pre-session, but it was pretty laidback. Just stay on top of your work & you'll do great. There's really no book to read - just a big packet that has all the readings. Anyways, breakdown of the workload was...10 summaries and 1 research paper (due a month after you finish the course). Easy A if you follow directions.

I think he is a great teacher! And I think everyone knows it. He just explains everything and makes the classes fun and interesting.

Overall Matson was a good teacher, follow his syllabus though!! I would say take his class over other professors.

I think Dr. Matson is a great teacher. I took his SOC 316 and a couple others and I find his classes very interesting. I learned lots and he makes it fun to learn.

This class is interesting because he says some funny things. The papers are easy to do, make sure that you fight a docking on your paper because I didn't and was docked 4 points and I missed having an A by 3 points. I think his asst. grades that stuff tho. I would take this class again.

Matson's class is simple as long as you read the assigned readings. About a third of the tests are just over the assigned reading material. Class attendance isn't extremely necessary, but his class is fun to go to and goes fast most of the time.

So I thought, like other sociology classes that you can come every once in a while, study an hour before the test and get an easy A. I was wrong. This teacher has great lectures but you DO need to read the articles or you will not do that hot on the tests. You might think its common sense but he is testing your comprehension on the articles.

Make sure you read the syllabus. Footnotes are important in your papers.

I have taken about all his classes except grad level and i love him! He has such depth and knowledge on his topics. He grades hard, has lots of reading and writing required, but you walk away knowing so much more about life and yourself. I hope my kids get to take his classes in 4 years!

WOW! Who would have thought a Pre-Session class could change your life? This is by far the best class I have ever taken. I wish it was a 8 week instead, but I feel like I grew as a person in this class.

One of the better professors at Wichita State in my experience. The kind of stuff you'll learn will really stick with you, and actually alter your perspective in a lot of ways. Really passionate about what he does. Readings out of the textbook weren't great though.

Excellent teacher, and gives interesting lectures. You must maintain an open mind for his courses or else you won't get anything from them. If you read the readings and study the notes it'll bag you an easy A.

Definitely an interesting class. He tended to get off track but it was still entertaining. A fellow classmate would ask anything to everything sexual, which she was completely serious about. Dr. Matson handled it fine. Just a little weird though.

I've taken this professor for Men and Masc. and LOVE. He is a great teacher with lots of enthusiasm. He is down to earth. As long as you take minimal notes and read you'll get an A. DO NOT miss attendance days. He does not design the classes for you to fail. he is very helpful too.. not to mention HILARIOUS and reminds me of Woody off Toy Story :)

Seriously, this class is easy as long as you go to class. I went every day, never cracked the book, and got a B. If I would have read some of the articles, I probably would have got an A. He spells out the writing assignments for you. You'll get 100% if you just included all the criteria. (I did.) Honestly, if you don't do well, it's your fault.

Took Men and Masc. LOVED IT! As long as you read readings and pay attention to lecture, an A is something super achievable! There are alot of people in the class, that says something about how good it is!

Dr. Matson is a great professor! He uses real-life stories to relate the lecture to the class, he's very passionate about what he teaches, his class is extremely interesting. Doing well in Dr. Matson's class is not difficult at all if you do the work.

Excellent teacher! I had him for two classes Men and Masculinities and Sociology. Make sure to read the readings he assigns they will help you greatly on the tests. Has three papers all of which are easy. He explains them a lot in class. Go to class and take notes and you will do fine.

This class had good and bad days, but overall the lectures were interesting and informative. I learned a lot. His classes tend to be very large (300+ people) so the individual attention is understandably lacking, but he is very understanding, very knowledgable, and grades on a pretty high curve.

Here's the thing. I am a Psychology major and I took his class to meet a general education requirement. On a regular basis he talks down on Psychology as a discipline and is desrespectful about it. I will never take a class from him again. He writes his own book and makes you get a course packet too. More money in his pocket!Psych majors BEWARE!!

He is the best professor I have encountered at WSU! He is super liberal, super feminist, and totally accepting of everyone. (Conservatives in his class hated that about him.) He is 70 years old and he has no problem connecting with you-even though there were 400+ people in my class! Yeah, you have to buy his book. Boo hoo. It's worth hanging onto.

Loved this class & learned a lot. The tests are very challenging. They are the kind of tests where there's more than one right answer, but you have to choose which one is "more right." There's also a lot of "all of the above" answers that I know trip some students up, but don't be fooled! This a valuable class and I'd recommend it to everyone!

Really awesome guy. Definitely knows what he's talking about. Made what would have originally been a pretty boring class quite interesting and fun. Your ideas will be challenged. My only complaint was how politically and religiously opinionated he was. But it's uni. What do you expect?

Dr. Matson is an amazing professor. He inspires and moves his students to apply his lectures to real life situations. I was looking at my life and children differently with every class. There is quite a bit of reading, but it is interesting so it's not too bad.

His class was definitely worth taking. I would never have guessed that a Sociology class in a lecture hall holding 200-300 students would hold my interest but it did. There is a fair amount of reading, but his lectures are rightfully the most prominent portion on the exams. He's very strategic with his attendance policy... Plan to attend class.

Matson is a great professor. Yes, he's older and his lectures can seem to drag on, but he's passionate about his work. Pros- Easy HW. HE GIVES YOU HIS LECTURE OUTLINE rarely do you need to scribble in extra info onto his notes Cons- Depending on your intellectual level, and awareness of your surroundings, most of his lecture is "No duh"

To those saying that the class is his opinion, he has tenure, and is the Dean of the college he's in, so, it's expected. He did write the book, and all of the notes, but they aren't hard to follow. He definitely cares about his students so, if you don't agree with something he says, he's more than happy to have a CONVERSATION about it.

Great lecturer has very extensive knowledge of the subject. you must attend lecture since his tests cover what was said in class. the book is also a must since he puts questions on the tests that stem from articles from the book. Tests make a large portion of the grade. The short papers are easy points if turned in on time. Great professor.
