Ron versus technology has been said too much
Off topic, hard to get a hold of, horrible prof.

Awesome professor!
the best!!
Really nice guy, interesting lectures and seminars, super fair tests and exams.
Helpful and nice!
nice, but very hard to find him.
I believe part of the req's are to be available to students?
had him for both first year. made learning fun and awsome tests. a little side tracked though sometimes
Realy good teacher makes learning fun
This teacher made learning so much fun. Because of his awesome teaching my mark totally reflected what I learned. Anyone slightly interested in Soc has to take this course with Ron!
great teacher...Fair marker...You will learn so many skills from Ron. he is one of my favorite teachers!!!! I would take him again for any course no questions asked!!!
Explained things clearly with lots of examples. Had a sense of humor as he taught. Tests were relevant and contained everything he said they would.
nuts teacher hes the best
just one word of advice, don't believe everything he says, do your own thinking and research... i found him very wrong on a number of things and when i talked to him, i didn't get too far... really his class was ****, go for mclane if you can!
Very good teacher overall :)
very intersting lectures, his first hand experiences make his class very high quality. if you are starting university and want to see what sociology is all about, i highly recommend his class.
Ron made this class interesting! His exams are relevant and there are no suprises. He uses personal stories to relate soc to the real world. He laughs at his own jokes! I learned alot. GREAT!
SOOOO BORING! I am a pretty average student and this guy has ruined sociology for me. If I were you, take anything but Soci 210 with him
I was so bored that I counted how many times he said "...actually" and "...for example" in one class. The number was stupidly high. He tells the SAME jokes and gives the SAME examples over and over.
he makes sure he gives real life examples, but he tends to wander off topic...plus he thinks he's funny when he's not. but overall, he was an okay techer
I am a sociology major and Ron is the best prof of sociology at UCC. (sorry Nan) He gives you conceptual skills during his lectures if you pay attention. He is funny and I look forward to all his lectures. I highly recommend this prof!
He's definitly a odd one! but very good. makes things interesting. His marking is very fair! Like him alot!
okay so i am a fan of ron's! i think he is the best soci prof at ucc! i wish he taught upper level courses! anways, a really fair marker! take him! he looks way healthier this year too!
Terrible prof. Loves the sound of his own voice and just wants to get together and waste your time with his point of view on current events. I switched my minor because of this man ... a complete joke ... waste of time and $$
it was a joy to take his class, very fair in assignments and tests.
good prof. those who want spoon fed don't do well. those who want to work and learn have fun and do well. very helpful and fair marker.
ron mcgivern is a waste of time and space on the university payroll. i was not very interested in sociology before i took this class and i am even more uninterested after taking sociolgy from him. his lectures are irrelevant, his assignments lacking, and his marking makes no sense.
Great Prof. I really enjoyed the class and highly recommend him as a professor. Lots of good (sometimes comical) examples to help clarify the material.
he's fun, interesting and allows students to personalize the information. he's comfortable to talk to and easy going.
very fun and interesting, made me interested in soci, a great teacher!
I really loved his teaching style; in fact, I think he is bar none the best sociology professor on the planet. Because of him, I am going to major in sociology.
cool teacher-very interesting and fair. highly recommended!
Ridiculously intellegent man. He's had tons of experience and he knows his stuff...goes off on some tangents sometimes but telling him to get back on track works...I always look forward to new episodes of "Ron vs. Technology".
Really great prof. He is very intelligent, friendly and the class atmosphere is good. I recommend him highly
Awesomely Nice prof!!! However, goes off topic a lot..not interesting whatsoever...but sooo nice, so u can't go wrong with Ron!!
he's got a 'sunny disposition'
Nice person! However, doesn't seem to take his job seriously... Ron is not organized, and his courses have no structure. Hits you hard on exams!
Ron is an absolute inspiration and the reason that I want to major in Sociology. His class felt more like a giant conversation than a formal class and I think this is a more effective learning environment. The other instructors should go over and take a look at how it should be done.
I adore Ron. He's a great instructor.
A complete waste of time...goes off on wild tangets...didnt learn a single thing in his class...overall very nice prof
I love him. He is the greatest ever...
I love Ron!!! a very nice man and i found him ALWAYS willing to help and gets back to you by e-mail quick! makes class interesting by telling you his life story every morning. very smart man, use the word heggemony in your essays and u will get an A!!!!!
will someone plllleassseeee buy him his dream truck (can't even remember what style...but COPPER.....lol) so we can get on with it. Nice professor though....nice style of teaching...pleasant personality
He's awesome, he personalized the material, makes you want to come to class, the text isn't used as often as it could be but he really applies his material during class time... makes you know what you should know ..not random information... plus he's cute
Ron is a great person and he's a fun prof. but at the end of the day, I wonder how much I learned in this class. From a learning standpoint, more structured notes would have been helpful. Pretty sure he didn't even read the second essay assignments. Recommended for a pleasant, relatively easy overview of the material.
Ron is a great teacher with a good sense of humor. I minored in Sociology b/c I liked his intro so much! He should be better organized though. Lots of class discussions but you will pass if you read the text books that he wrote. (Aprat from the extra 10% for attendance). Recommended for fun lovers, but not super organized, structured learners.
This man is not a good teacher. I learned nothing in his class. Maybe in intro, he can get away with being friendly and having that be good enough to entertain the class, but in this upper level research methods class, it was clear he had no idea what he was doing. I wanted to learn the material and he was completely unable to teach me.
I actually read the text. Horrible text but does the job. He covers the course material, but expects you to do the work required. Lots of hanger ons in group work who got better marks than they deserved. Should be less group work.
while ron is a great person and can be quite interesting t times his classes lack the neccessary structutre condusive to learning. it is not acceptable at all to teach an upper level survey class and spend an hour demonstrating "survey oragami." he clearly is unprepared for his classes and the assignments/tests have almost no relevance
during a lecture, he seems to be a great instructor throwing some jokes and stuff, but end of the class, I always wondered what I learned from him...well, nothing. his tests are not quite relevant to his lecture. overall, the class sucked, and I'll never take his classs again.
Completely unorganized and unprepared for every class, I think he decided what to lecture about on the spot every class, and kept changing his mind in mid lecture. Lectures consisted of him telling random stories and spitting out random facts. If you want an easy mark, go with Ron. If you want to learn, go with Nan.
Ron is an excellent teacher and really nice guy; definitely my favorite professor of the social sciences. Lectures are very interesting!!
Even though his lectures often seem very unorganized I loved them, he explained things in ways that you can adapt them to the world around you. He's also a very easy person to talk to if you have any questions and respects your oppinion even if you have no clue as to what you're talking about. He made Soc my favorite class!
What a great prof! I loved going to his classes. Very nice and approachable person, would definitely take his class again!
Tends to ramble and get off topic. Almost everything you learn is from the text on your own time. I like a more structured class that actually focuses on the topic.
Awesome Prof!
he is a nice guy, and a pretty easy marker, very leanient. he often rambles on and gets off topic though
Ron has a good sense of humour and is an overall great guy. As a professor he gets off topic almost every class sometimes hours at a time, but eventually he will realize and get back on track. My class convinced him not to have final exams anymore... your welcome. I felt like the no final exam technique was very helpful. Not many assignments. :)
One of my fav profs yet! He can be absolutely hilarious and makes going to class worth it even early in the morning. Mostly if you go to class and keep notes you basically guarentee you will know all that will be on tests.
Nice guy but rather boring. I'm pretty sure that we covered the same, limited material every week and he tells the same stories over and over again. We hardley used the text. He didn't provide clear expectations and appeared to mark on a whim. For the final, he made us complete an entire survey project in 3 hours, including making up fake data!
If you enjoy sociology I would recommend this course for you. If you're taking it for credit, prepare for mindnumbing stories that have occasional reference to the textbook. Take notes on the movies and memorize the chapter review questions from the free online textbook and you should get at least a B. each "quiz" is only 30 mc questions.
Ron is an extremely nice man but not a great professor. He lectures for hours on end but only says a handful of relevant things each class. Expect to hear the same stories several times. I skipped the latter half of his classes and still got good marks by using common sense and skimming the key terms in the back of the (free) textbook.
He was a great prof and made each lecture fun to attend. The tests were pretty easy and were all short multiple choice. On the test it was mainly just information from videos and common sense. I found lectures had almost nothing to do about the course. I would write down two or 3 points in a 3 hour lecture, it was mostly stories than information.
Ron is one of the sweetest teachers Ive ever had. He is passionate and caring and respects all of his students. His course material is straight from the textbook so its easy to keep up if you miss class. He trys to keep lectures fun a relevant and has a great sense of humour. 10/10 would take another class with him.
He marks on a whim for his essays. Doesn't give very good feedback at all. His quizzes are multiple choice.
He's kind of a tricky tester. All multiple choice tests but they all could be the answer. He doesn't do power points so honestly just read every chapter and youll pass.
While Ron himself was a nice man his course was all over the place and very difficult to follow. He was flaky with the assignments and tests and even the classes themselves. When I would go to class it would be mind numbing to follow him and completely irrelevant to the course material. I would read the book and still get bad grades.
Ron is a very nice man but his lectures were all over the place and very difficult to follow. He is very disorganized and usually ends up repeating himself every lecture. He doesn't cover much in the lectures, just expects you to read and study the textbook to prepare for each test.
Attendance is not mandatory at all, all examples and lectures were straight out of the test. Ron is a very nice guy but not clear at all on what he wants from his students. Had 3 tests, 1 presentation, 1 project and 5 small papers and half of that did not test my knowledge at all.
Very nice man and you can tell he loves what he does.
Very nice and funny guy. lectures are slow and he gets off topic but if you read the textbook and learn the little bit of terms there are you will get an easy A-. makes sociology very interesting and his test are direct from the textbook and terms.
Ron is a wonderful man that really cares about what he is teaching. All you have to do is read the assigned chapters in the textbook, and listen to him in class. This will get you a good mark. I would enjoy taking any course taught by him.
He grades based off of several quizzes (tests) and a paper. Overall I found lectures to be uninteresting as he would often go off on an irrelevant tangent that did not relate to the material. Most of the course you teach yourself through reading the text, which his tests are heavily based off of.
I have lots of respect for how Dr. McGivern runs this course. It is interesting and the textbook is free online. Dr. McGivern creates a very warm and relaxed environment in his classroom and there was no final exam, just a paper and 3 tests composed of only multiple-choice questions. Easy as long as you keep up with the textbook reading & notes.
McGivern is one of the best professors I have ever had at TRU. I have taken a few LL sociology courses with him and he is absolutely amazing. Probably the kindest, more caring, honest prof. Very approachable, reasonable, and all around very good at teaching in a way that keeps you engaged. Trust me - he will make you love Soci. Defs recommend 10/10
He is so funny. When Ron talks I want to listen. He does not treat his students like children. He is informative and inspiring, he is passionate in what he teachers and in turn makes me passionate to learn. I got a bad grade but it was entirely my fault, I did almost nothing
Ron is a kind and humble individual. He puts himself in students' shoes and considers how he can accommodate them when he can. He's very hands-off (at least with the online delivery), so you need to reach out to him with any questions. Not your off-the-wall, inspiring prof, but he is a genuine person that is passionate about his work.
This course is essentially self taught. He uploads multiple videos to Moodle from Crash Course and tests on the material covered in them. He gets off track during his lectures and talks quite quickly. Has talked about some questionable content in class. Lectures are him standing at the front of the room talking without any supporting recourses
Mr Mcgivern's course was open book and between his lectures and study materials I have learnt a lot. You will have to put in some effort for assignments but an easy A to get.
He teaches word for word what he has in his slides. So you can skip classes and not have to worry about it. Would stray from the topic sometimes. Easiest exams I had to give. Questions were predictable and the options were not too hard. As long as you study the contents, you should be fine
moodle quizzes are open book, & done on your own time during class time. For the 2 classes I’ve had he always has 1 day in class, 1 day no class, that time is for quizzes or homework. He has small 250w assignments & quizzes every other week. 1 1000 word essay, a final exam is 50/50 depending on the class. He is great, a really easy going prof!
You can't go wrong with taking Ron's class. His lectures are very interesting and he doesn't make you feel bored. He has no final or mid term and his quizzes are easy if you have read through the readings. Another plus point is the textbook he uses is free. There is a couple of short assignments and one main assignment which are relativity easy.
Did not like his class. His instructions were always very unclear, his grading is unfair, and he doesn't even give any feedback at all. There is usually so much reading that you will have to do. If you study you will pass, but the lectures don't even matter because he just reads out the textbook. The textbook is free which I appreciated.
He is nice, but his classes are boring and you won't lose much by not attending the classes. Easy GPA booster but I feel Sociology is such an interesting topic but this professor kind of spoiled it. I am giving him this low rating because he didn't challenge me at all.
Grading was VERY inconsistent and no feedback was given so if you got a bad grade you wouldn't know what to fix for the next assignment. You don't need to spend much time on this class as quizzes are online and assignments are small. I would take his class as a grade boost but would not take it if you actually wanna go into sociology.
Excellent class. Lectures were recordings. Good availability for feedback and discourse.
