Professor Mitchell is quite demanding and his classes require students' full attention. He expects a lot and is very helpful in office hours. Very friendly but TURN OFF YOUR CELLPHONE during class and when you visit him. He gets mad.

tons of busy work and abnormal amounts of reading. if you like essay tests take this class
Be prepared to learn. His courses are demanding, complex, and he expects you to set yourself apart from your peers. One of the hardest and most rewarding classes I've ever taken. Don't give up in his class, push yourself through it. Also, sign up for office hours.
I can't sing Professor Mitchell's praises enough. He is intimidating at first, but as long as you apply yourself, ask questions when things are unclear, and do the work, you can learn four times as much from his class than any others. He is also great at rewarding you for your hard work: with respect, mentorship, recommendations, and even jobs.
Class is alright, he posts lectures on Blackboard but has no power point or any visuals during lecture, you just listen the whole time which means you really have to listen and keep up. It's easy to get restless this way but some of the material is interesting. Lots of reading though. Alright class overall I'd say. Could be better.
Great Professor. Lots of readings, but if you learn to skim its fine. Do the reading because he touches on other things in lecture, but it wont make sense unless you read. Lecture notes are online, which is super helpful because lectures can be hard to follow. He is very interested in his topics and so makes it interesting for the students
Ridiculous amounts of reading for a lower division class. No visuals during lecture so it gets incredibly boring. Too much focus on theory as opposed to current issues. Insane exams that are basically all essays and complicated ones at that. I thought I was really interested in Intl Relations, thanks to this class, I've realized otherwise.
Ron Mitchell is an incredible professor. He made lectures exciting with his sense of humor and interpretation of current events. This class is challenging, but well worth the time. Five stars for the class and the professor.
Ron Mitchel was a very good teacher. His lectures were interesting, and he was very interested in helping students succeed. This class also sparked my interest in International Relations. There was a lot of reading, but they were all useful and interesting. I strongly recommend taking this class.
Mitchell is the most passionate teacher I have ever had, he made me want to become a better person. This class is no walk in the park, but once you finish it, you feel great! I learned a ton, and he really got me pumped for more PS classes in my future! Take anything taught by Mitchell!
Very informative, interesting professor. If you like writing, this class is for you. The whole course is structured around a 15-20 page paper, with a few supporting writing assignments.
Professor Mitchell is an outstanding professor. He comes off as a bit intimidating, but he's passionate about what he teaches. This class isn't easy for an Intro, but you learn so much. He really sparked an interest for me in International Relations and Environmental Studies. In the end, he's a very likable professor, and it is an interesting class
Mitchell's classes are hard, but they are incredibly rewarding. Taking this class has made me a more confident student. He sets high standards, but he wants you to do well. MITCHELL WILL HELP YOU! Taking his help will lead to your success. Respect the class, respect him, work hard, ask for help-and his class will change your academic life.
Professor Mitchell was the best professor I've ever had. He expects a lot from his students, but trust me, you'll want to live up to those expectations out of respect for him alone. Take his class, you won't regret it. You won't get an A, you may not get a B, but you'll leave the class having your academic world rocked.
Professor Mitchell is by far my favorite teacher I've had so far. He is very knowledgable and passionate about what he does. He does come off a little intimidating but he is very approachable and really wants you to succeed
Professor Mitchell is the most knowledgeable teacher I've had. His classes are very challenging but they're worth taking to learn from Mithell. He comes off intimidating but if you go into office hours he's really helpful and welcoming.
My favorite professor I've ever had hands down. He truly cares about what he's teaching and really focuses on student development. Tough class, worth it.
favorite professor at UO. extremely knowledgeable on the subject and clearly enjoys teaching the subject which is evident in his lectures. genuinely cares about his students and wants to see people learn and succeed. would highly encourage taking the time to go to his office hours.
Professor Mitchell is the best professor that I have had at UO. You are definitely going to be challenged and there is a lot of work but he is willing to help and super easy to talk to. I would highly recommend taking one of his classes if you want to be challenged academically.
Amazing quality professor. He makes you work for your grade, but covers topics exceptionally well in class. Make sure to do your readings and you will be fine. He has lots of interesting things to say with regards to today's foreign policy. In terms of the class, he's a captivating lecturer and fair grader. He cares about his students.
Your grade is primarily based on the midterm and the final. The other assignments should be completed, but they're not really worth anything. He has unrealistic expectations for an introductory course, but you do absorb a lot of information and you learn well in this class. He is a very engaging professor and super intense and unfiltered.
The class is a walk in the park until the final exam, which is incomprehensibly difficult. You are expected to write three substantially in-depth essays within the course of two hours. It just isn't enough time especially for freshman polisci students to have the capability to do this. That said Mitchell is an amazing professor and cares deeply.
Ron Mitchell opens your eyes to the international realm in this course. The course is structured on three theories that often overlap and intertwine with one another depending on viewpoints, but they are also distinct. His lecture material was more than enough to be successful on tests and he is very accessible. The workload is high so be ready.
Professor Mitchell is a highly intelligent man and will challenge your thinking immensely. That said, the class is extremely difficult to get an A in but don't beat yourself up for it. The learning experience in this course and Mitchell's candor is well-worth the time and effort and you'll leave the class knowing more than you would have otherwise.
Professor Mitchell truly cares about how politics affects the global environment. He will broaden the scope of your thinking and will challenge your beliefs about the world. He makes the class a hard-earned grade but its so rewarding.
Ron Mitchell is undoubtedly the best professor you will ever have at the U of O. He makes you work for your grade, yet doesn't make the class unreasonable. You won't have to do much on your own so long as you pay attention in lecture and listen to everything he says. That said it requires plenty of studying attentiveness to the topics.
Ron Mitchell is a captivating and engaging professor. Lectures are relatively comprehensive- it is necessary to glance over the readings and generally understand it, but reading every page is not needed. He covers lots of ground during lectures and incorporates critical thinking skills as he exposes students to international organization. Fun class
The course is no walk-in-the-park. Professor Mitchell takes a structured approach to teaching the Environmental Politics class and gives open-ended questions for the final paper. Exams and projects are difficult but he makes himself very available during office hours. I would personally take a class again with him.
Not the easiest class. Used to be a 400-level. There's plenty of theoretical stuff if you're into that, but Mitchell's lectures are comprehensive and he provides plenty of materials to succeed in the class. It's difficult to ace the course, but if you at least review the slides and draft essays, you'll do well.
The class is not super heavy on the workload, but make sure you complete the readings if you want to understand the lectures. Ron is a fantastic professor who relates every concept to real-life and teaches you how to think like a political scientist. His teaching methods are second-to-none and is extremely professional and fair. Would take again!
Ron Mitchell is one of the best professors that the University has to offer. He may seem tough and a hard grader (which he is), but is all in fairness and with the intent to push his students to get the most out of their education. Take this class if you have ample time to read and prepare as it is necessary. Love this professor!
Professor Mitchell is a very educated, engaging lecturer. Hes a great professor and encourages you to make the most of your education. Dont take this class if you dont actually care about learning the material. He has great lectures and is interesting to listen to. However he offered extra credit that I did and never gave me the points for it.
This was probably the most engaging class I took in the economics department. I wouldn't say the material is hard. It's very intuitive. The workload, however, is heavy. You will spend a lot of time doing independent research to support your hypothesis on the final project. Maybe it's not a good idea to take this one when overloading on credits.
The grading was almost solely done by 2 GE's who seemed to have arbitrary standards. The grading standards weren't clear, especially for the final paper. Biggest takeaway: form over content. Citations matter immensely. Format your paper the way the prof. seems to want it. There was a lot of objectionable material presented in the class.
He just clearly doesnt care about any of his students. I understand classes are tough right now with the coronavirus but thats not an excuse to be unnecessarily tough and rude. I cant judge how his class is in person but online and through zoom I would never take his class again.
Ron is a really hands-on professor. Learning with him means you get a valuable opportunity to grow as a scholar.
Professor Mitchell's class was the worst class I've taken at the university. He was disorganized, said things that weren't politically correct often, and made a class I was so excited for insufferable. Would not recommend.
Good guy and means well, but his train of thought is all over the place. I feel like I get seizures trying to understand him.
Prof. Mitchell means well, and the transition to remote classes probably was difficult. However, he often lost trains of thought and the lectures were a bit monotonous. The content wasn't all that exciting, which made it hard to go to lecture. A lot of writing as well. He cares about what he teaches, and he tried his best. Easy enough class.
Smart professor and overall good guy but the lectures were really long, sometimes dry and content-heavy. Also a ton of readings expected in a short time. Assignments weren't too bad, I just made sure to check in with my GE about grading expectations. There were a few quizzes throughout the term but the big assignments were papers.
He is honestly a good teacher if you like the lecture style of class. If you don't like lecture classes, then I would not recommend him. Good class and good teacher overall though.
Professor Mitchell is an engaging lecturer and provides an inclusive space to communicate ideas. However, be aware he's one of the more demanding political science professors and unless you're willing to study and prepare, I wouldn't recommend him. If you are serious about your academics, his class is very rewarding.
Professor Mitchell can be a tough professor to take but if you pay attention you will do very well. Going to his office hours is crucial not only does it put a face to who he is grading it helps a ton with your final project. I recommend starting on final paper early I waited until two days before the 15 page final paper was due and it was hell!
Professor Mitchell is extremely difficult. His class during COVID-19 online was nearly impossible to pass. I am a senior taking a freshman level psych class and he makes the curriculum as if it is a grad level psych class. He doesn't budge on grading and is a really tough grader.
DO NOT TAKE ANY CLASS RON TEACHES. First, Ron refuses to give A's ! He also believes that "all first years are dumb" and compares first years to senior students. He admitted during office hours that his class sucks. Ron does not grade a single assignment but, tells GE's to NEVER give full credit. Grades are based on what's missing in the rubric.
Some of the worst grading rubrics and policies out of any class. Took PS102 and exceeded difficulty of the classes I have taken at the 300 level. Impossible to get full credit on anything, even opinionated statements. Take another 100 level class that is appropriate for this difficulty. Unclear grading expectations. So much reading and lectures.
This was by far the worst class I haven taken at UO so far. Ron is an extremely tough grader (doesn't believe in giving A's). Lot's of writing assignments that are impossible to do well on. He was never available to his students and seems to not care about being a professor at all. Do not take this class.
I have been taking college courses for 2 years and have never taken a class as awful as this. This is a 100 level class. Ron doesn't believe in A's (95 is the highest he will give) and the weekly writing assignments to test your understanding are impossible to get a good grade on. If you have grade anxiety, do not take this class.
Him and his GE's are pretty tough graders and don't give feedback on the assignments or explain the grade unless you go to office hours. His class had a reasonable amount of work though and his lectures were easy to watch. He also made weekly quizzes pretty easy. Overall just a tough grader, but funny and personable.
I think the worst part about this class was the GEs, they didn't give any feedback at all or if they did it wasn't helpful just rude. Prof Mitchell is really nice and his lectures are short and easy to watch. For an intro course you have to work for it but it's not too bad!
Ron is a great guy. Easily the best prof I've had. Sure, he grades a bit heavy but I STRONGLY RECOMMEND going to his office hours. You will have a friend for life.
Ron sets an 80 percent average for the papers in this class, making it nearly impossible to earn a good grade in the class. The material itself is interesting and he is a good lecturer.
The class content wasn't too bad, but the GEs can be tough graders. I'd recommend going to office hours because he genuinely is a good professor and is super passionate about the subjects.
This is without a doubt the worst class I have ever taken in college.
Ron is great and he's famous in his field of work. He is pretty strict on paper but if you meet him you'll find that he's a sweetie. I was in two 400 lvl classes when I took PS102 and I worked harder in his class to maintain an A than I did in those other two combined. I'm pretty sure only a handful of students got As that term.
Ron is a character for sure. His lectures are great, although he sometimes says some weird stuff. (used "illiterate indonesian women" as an example of why sweatshops are sometimes the best option people have, but Indonesia has a higher literacy rate than America) Besides comments like that, my only compliant is the ungodly amount of reading.
Mitchell is a great professor/lecturer. The content is not at all dense or difficult, but his grading criteria is borderline insane. He ranks all the greenbook exams and then only gives As to the top %s regardless of effort. That said, you will learn a lot in his class and he is compassionate.
He is very unorganized, the assignments make no sense whatsoever. He grade the class like its a 300/400 level class. He is overly obsessed with attendance, spends at least 10 minutes every class talking about it.
This class is not worth your time. The material is a mix of common sense and complete nonsense. If you take it prepare for a lot of reading and essays.
I actually really liked Dr. Mitchell! He is one of those teachers who will never give 100% on essays, but besides that, the class is pretty easy and straightforward. You have 2 weekly quizzes (5 questions each) and 4 essays/response papers due throughout the term Mitchell is very caring and shares a lot of real-world experience which I enjoy!
He talks a lot during his lectures. Final is one 15 question quiz and an essay. There's multiple papers due throughout the term and there's daily attendance checks.
Class itself is very boring and hardly relates to political science at all. Is entirely about methodology rather than politics, and is a super hard lecture to get through first thing in the morning. Ron himself is chill but his assignments are really boring and does not actually stimulate thoughts at all. Class is easy enough though.
I'm in the middle of a midterm for this class right now and it's FOUR PARTS LONG. This is a 100 level class and he's giving us the work of an upper division. Shouldn't even be under the poli sci tag, it is basically a humanities class. Many better lower div poli sci classes out there.
Ron is nice enough and office hours are encouraged. He's a tough grader and the rubric is often unclear. The final paper represents most of the grade, and he is controlling of every step in the assignment. His lectures are unorganized, have little to do with the readings, and he does not care for student feedback/ideas. Too many emojis in canvas.
I do NOT recommend taking PS 102 w/ prof. Mitchell. Brilliant professor; however, it should be an upper-division class. The intensity of this course is similar to a 400-level course at UO. The Lectures are hard to follow, with disorganized slides and lots of rambling, vague rubrics and harsh grading. Take a different 100-level PS class.
I took his class online. Weekly quizzes that focused on the lectures and reading so do them! Graded pretty easy. The midterm and final both had two parts, a short quiz and an essay. The lectures were really helpful, and as long as you watch the videos and do the readings you should understand most things. Encourages talking to him/office hours.
Professor Mitchell is a good professor overall. He's super good at responding to emails quickly and always has good responses/ advice. My experience was a little different because my class was online but overall the content was pretty entertaining for an online class. If you're taking this class online, get ready for a lot of reading/lecture videos
By far the worst professor I have ever had. He brags about students failing his classes and does not believe in giving A's.
This class was taken online, There were lots of readings and quizzes. I had a hard time finding what I needed to study due to it being unorganized. I really enjoyed this class though and it wasn't too hard.
i took this class online and he definitely had strict grading requirements for the papers, but there were lots of quizzes that could help bump your grade! he offered lots of support during office hours, through email, etc since it was an online class. highly recommend!
Ron seems terrified of the proverbial AI Boogeyman, spending 2/3 of the syllabus quiz, multiple papers, and more rattling off half-truths about AI. The final was focused almost entirely on remembering the generalities of examples to tease out if you watched the videos. Very nice guy, but no valuable information was delivered from hours of material.
Professor has a very strict grading system where the recent midterm the mean was only 78 on a 4 part essay for a 100 LEVEL CLASS. The GEs and Professor is committed to making sure nobody gets an A. One of the GEs gives me a 68% on one of the assignments and made sure to comment and grade it AFTER the due date so I cannot resubmit. Avoid this prof.
Oh my god. Avoid this class at all costs. He assigns WAY too much reading, is constantly spamming your inbox for random articles about AI, will *not* give you an A, even if you follow instructions to a T and lectures take up to an hour at times. I understand that AI is harmful, but he won't let you use GRAMMARLY! It just seems so ridiculous.
He makes a great effort to get to know all his students but assigns too much reading before each class. He requires us to include information from the readings in our essays and rambles in class.
The GE's grade so harshly, instructions are very confusing and feedback is poor. So much reading.
This course felt extremely overdone for a 100-level. I'm passionate about social science research, but the harsh grading and overwhelming structure of this class lost me. I went to a GEs office hours and was marked down for following the exact suggestions that I was given. This course could've been extremely interesting if it wasn't trying so hard.
Avoid this class at all costs. The GE's grade extremely harshly and usually don't offer valuable feedback. The professor is so afraid of AI that he bans you from using grammarly. For a 100 level course this class felt like a 400 level.
ron is a horrible professor the grading is super strict for this class and the lectures and readings are really unhelpful, time consuming and pointless. after the midterm I stopped watching them and the reading and still passed all the weekly quizzes and final using common sense. Avoid this guy
If you are looking for a class just to fill out your gen ed requirements then this is the perfect class for you! If you are a political science major or any affiliated fields and dont have to take this class then definitely dont. You dont actually end up learning anything useful in this class but its easy enough to pass with at least a B.
Irks me that he's not rated higher by current students. He teaches you to *really* be smart - not just have a bunch of knowledge. Nearly a decade later, I still refer to my notes and matrices from 205 and 320. Yup, he is one of the most challenging teachers you will ever have - that's because he actually cares and is not about lowering standards.
He's a passionate professor and lecturer, often using analogies and really drilling in key examples. He had a well organised canvas where all resources were accessable. He does get heated sometimes, like when I challenged the truth of a resource and criticised it a bit, he shut down stuff like that with anger. You must read all the sources to pass!
only recommend this class for those who need to fill their social science core education. for a 100 level online class, there is an absurd amount of reading that was unnecessary to pass. GE's are strict graders and do not give helpful feedback. midterm and final are easy but the prompts have to be deciphered from poorly formatted prompts.
I have actually nothing to say about this guy because I didn't watch a single video lecture. Everyone says he's strict about AI but I used AI on every knowledge check, quiz and essay and ended up doing fine. I took this hoping to not have to do any real work and that proved to be true. Super easy class, would recommend if you need a filler class
(Took 101, wasn't an option on here) Prof. Mitchell is a very solid teacher. The class itself was so, so easy so if you have experience taking polisci classes (which I do) I wouldn't really recommend it. However, Mitchell was always extremely helpful and responded to emails quickly, which is awesome for someone with tons of questions like me.
Long and tedious readings assigned every week, shows up on the quizzes which is annoying. GEs are super nit picky when grading papers. I've had less work assigned for upper classes.
Largest issue I had was with the essay gradings, him and the TAs comments were very unhelpful, with some comments sounding like they didn't even read the essay or look at the sources I used. Super frustrating. Does not feel like a 102 class. I'm taking upper divisions in my final year here and those classe were easier.
