Its really hard to pass his tests b/c he uses double negatives & his test questions are unfair. Everyday he has a pop quiz on like 40 pgs of boring reading. GET OUT WHILE YOU CAN!
Very challenging but fair.
He's very intimidating at first. Stick with it, and you'll come out on top. Just make sure you take good notes...easB, A-.
good prof. don't hate on him! he a good teacher. If you take his class you will learn an extensive amount of material
Pretty cool guy...somewhat on the intimidating side, but not much. Has a very "in your face" teaching style that takes some getting used to, but once you do, his class becomes no problem. Do your reading though, as he LOVES giving pop quizzes.
A challenging, but interesting class. Lots of pop quizes. Take the option of extra credit. I ended up with an A- because of it!
I found this professor to have a "better than you" attitude, and that he was unnecessarily intimidating and chavanistic.
This professor acts like he's brilliant and his students are complete morons. We can all do without his attitude!
The man definitely knows how to teach, but he's not afraid to push a few buttons with students if need be. While he might come across as intimidating/judgemental at first, you'll get used to it. I did, and the class went fine. Do your readings...you'll be quizzed very often.
Attention all lazy students: If you don't want an education, what are you doing in school? I hear people complain about Dr. Stewart constantly and I'm sick of it. He likes to push students to reach their potential and they can't handle it. They call him a ****, etc.etc.He's compelling, inspiring a
Awesome class, great teacher. He is hard on his students but only because he wants them to succeed :]
If you don't want to work for your grade, don't take his class. He makes it very difficult, but at the same time, he makes you WANT to succeed. There will be pop quizzes and very difficult tests, but if/when you do well, you will feel like you really earned it. One of my favorite professors
Great Prof., If you do not want to learn do not go to college, otherwise press on and accept what you earned.
Social Problems - He is tough on his students and basically forces them to study. If you don't give any serious effort, you will not do well. He seems like a nice guy and he does joke around also.

Not a very good teacher. Picks out the most inane statistics and puts them on tests. Tests on the most assine information you can even begin to imagine. Complains if no one speaks, then pointedly ignores speakers. This is NOT bitter grapes - I got an A.
Kicked My Ass and I love him for it thanks Doc Stewart
He's a horrible professor, biased, hypocritical, preferential. He's an embarrassment to Buffalo State. He takes pleasure in failing students.
I Love Him! He is a great professor and a wonderful guy! He pushes you to do your best and he is willing to help anytime you need it(just ask)! If you respect him, he will respect you.
His class is difficult but if you do the reading everythings fine.
At first I thought he was awful, he made me look at truths about myself and the world that I came from that I hadn't wanted to face yet. I took more out of this class than decent grades, I took away a better understandign of how the world works. I'll remember this man for the rest of my life.

very interesting class. extremely difficult tests. if you need to pull up your GPA do not take or take it pass/fail.
amazing overall
Dr. Stewart is the funniest professor I know since I'm in college. He loves jokin' around and makes u laugh so much that u might choke after a while. But he's very tough for his tests.Reading the book would just partially help you.Be ready for a pop quiz on every class. He makes u happy when he speaks but becomes a devil when it comes to a test.
Dr. Stewart is a great professor because he makes you want to understand the material. I read almost every night and studied for the tests and still did not do well which was frustrating. The material is fairly easy to understand but his tests are brutal-he loves pop quizzes. Actually, they are not really pop. Just assume they are every day.
Loves to give pop quizzes, sometimes multiple ones all in one class hour. Tests are diffictult, you really need to read the textbook and study. But it's an interesting class, he makes it very fun, he doesn't fail people, and is a really great guy. He made me enjoy this class, and I didn't do too bad.
Mr.Stewart exams are very hard. You have 2 really think. Read the book b4 you get to class b/c when he do teach the material, he goes through it real fast. However, he does make the class fun and he makes sure every 1 in the class participate. In the beginging I didnt like the class b/c I thought it was 2 hard. But in the end I got a B. I wrked my
The tests are very difficult, and sometimes hard to understand because he talks very fast when giving lectures.
Dr. Stewart just wants you to learn, and work at a level that you never thought that you could work at. He is very intelligent, and knows his stuff. Test are very very hard, and so are the quizes. Easy grader when it comes to papers though. Go to class, write your papers and take your exams...guarantedd C. Good class for those who like a challenge.
I would suggest NEVER taking this class in the summer with Dr. Stewart... it should not be offered. He talks very fast and gives to much work. The class is pretty much impossible. Good Luck
A great professor, one of the best teachers i have ever had
He is a very hard teacher but if you try then you can get no lower than a C. He wants you to understand the material like he's not the one teaching you but will help you all the way if he sees that you are trying if not then you're pretty much screwed. So don't take this class if your looking for an easy A because he WILL make you earn your A.
One of the best professors I have ever had, demanding. Should be at this point in one's collegiate career, right? Only take him if you are serious about learning. Makes you earn your stripes.
His tests are pretty hard and ask about little unimportant details. But if you read, listen, and attend class, you should be able to score high in such a basic class.
doesnt give students wait time.makes ppl feel stupid.tests are extremely confusing & on 3-4 chapters at once.very friendly out side of the classroom.EXTREMELY intimidating inside the classroom.
he is extremely helpful if you just ask him during office hours. If you don't want to attend class or do the reading don't waste your time or his. His will to help those you try their hardest and want to learn the material. Excellent professor.
tests are extremely hard & confusing. i don't believe he has his students' best interest in mind. sure he curves.. he has to or else the entire class will fail. not a fan of dr. stewart. i would suggest NEVER taking him if you don't have to.
Horrible. I'd rather pluck my toenails out one by one than take a class from him again.
I took him 2 semester's ago. @ 1st extremely intimidating but he just wants you to live up to your potential. He went out of his way to talk to me after class once and it put everything in the right perspective. His teachings have stayed with me. If you put in effort even if you haven't done well grade wise, you will. That's all he wants.
Expects a lot from his students, but it's a 400 level course- if you're not willing to put the work in to learn the material, you have no business graduating. Challenging course, but very rewarding. One of the best profs @ BSC- If you have half a brain & are willing to use it, you'll love him. Not a class or prof recommended for lazy idiots.
IF YOU HAVE A CHANCE AVOID HIM, AND TAKE Dr. WALL. HE TRIES TO INTIMIDATE YOU. NOT CLEAR ON ASSIGNMENTS, FEELS LIKE YOUR FREELANCING CAUSE THEERE IS NOT CLEAR DIRECTIONS WHEN WRITING ASSIGNMENTS.SUDY GUIDES ARE USELESS CAUSE THERE IS NOTHING ON THEM THATS ON THE TEST. HATES TO BE PROVEN WRONG,AND TAKES IT OUT ON YOU ALL SEMESTER LONG.
Dr. Stewart definitely knows his stuff. He gives pop quizzes all the time and his tests are very difficult and have questions on the most minuscule details.you definitely need to do your reading as well or else you have almost no chance on doing well in this course.if professors saying extremely sexual comments bothers you DO NOT take his course.
At first I was very scared to take his course & was even more scared when I saw the first pop quiz and how poorly everyone did. But he really does want you to succeed even if you disagree. You def need your book & to read the chapters. If you want to pass you must go to his class. Try and get extra credit as much as possible! & dress up 4 tests!!
READ YOUR TEXTBOOK!! Tests and pop quizzes are hard even when you read so read and reread. Dr. Stewart rambles off important facts so taking notes and showing up is imperative. There is a curve since majority of the class does poorly. If you improve on each test (even if it is a little) he takes that into major consideration
Terrible teacher. Pop quizzes everyday; tests are not passable...probably because he likes to think of himself smarter than the class ( an ego boost I guess); Does not encourage students to discuss their own thoughts...hates to be proven wrong...again that comes back to his massive self-induced-ego...do not take him!
Lives out of the text book! So do your reading. Alot of pop quizzes on not only the reading but the lectures to so going to class is important. Overall he is a great but challenging teacher!
He is a great teacher, fun and unpredictable. The work is hard but its worth it in the end. He is an interesting person and loves what he does. I recommend this class for people interested in learning about culture and what goes along with it but be prepared to work hard for a good grade.
Dr. Stewart is great! He pushes you to be a better student. Go to class, and read the text. If you dont understand go to his office and ask him! he is very understanding and a concerned teacher. i enjoyed his class and i will take another one! dont be punks; if u want a challenge take his class
Dr Stewart is the man! Ive taken 4 classes with Dr Stewart (Methods, Theory, Black Families, and Race & Ethnicity) my lowest grade out of the 4 was a B-. Buy and READ the book!! Pop quizzes are a pain but if you do the reading you will be fine. The tests are hard but definitley passable. If you are struggling GO TO HIS OFFICE!! I LOVE HIM!
He's a real funny guy, could never say lectures were boring, but on the same hand he was quite strict and can lash out at random. Be sure to buy the textbook he suggests since you'll be living out of it to pass.
stewart is awesome. you can tell he genuinely wants to help students become better and learn the stuff. he's very funny and very smart... and fly. YOU WILL NOT PASS WITHOUT THE TEXTBOOK. DO YOUR READING. tests are difficult, but passable if you study. if you're determined and want a fun class take this one with stewart.
Dr. Stewart is amazing!! You will work for your grade and you will learn, but he is fun and funny and wants you to do well. As long as you put in an effort you will do well. You have to read, no way you will get around it for his class. He will push you to your full potential. I wish I would have been able to take more classes with him!!
The professor grades you based on effort. I honestly did not diserve a C but he realized that I tried my hardest. If your not a Social Science type of person this class won't click to you. We received about 6 exams and if you dress up on examination days you will get extra points. Try to make small talk with the professor and ask the TA for help.
FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THINGS HOLY, READ THE TEXTBOOK! If you don't you WILL fail! His tests and quizzes (he also gives several pop quizzes) contain questions that are OUTRAGEOUSLY specific and could easily be missed in the readings. Luckily, he also grades on a curve. A fun guy, but he expects noting but professionalism in the classroom.
If you take a summer class prepare to work your butt off. He expects you to read one chapter a day, and almost 99% of the time has a pop quiz on that chapter. We had 2 big tests and 2 big quizzes along with the pop quizzes, and an oral presentation. Seriously read the textbook. You will most likely fail if you don't. Other than that really great guy
This is not an easy class. There are atleast two pop quizzes a week and one test. He makes you really work for your grade. Hes quite funny and smart. You will learn a lot if you work hard.
Stewart is a great teacher. I have taken his class back in 2002 and still talk to him this day. He is always willing to help.
alright listen heres the real brown for this class you have to buy the book. there is no in class review before tests you will get 1 or 2 pop quizzes a week. you will take little to no in class notes. basically this is a class wheyou teach your self you have to read them chapters and understand them well in order to do well in this course
The toughest professor you will ever love. At the end of the course you WILL know how to write a PUBLISHABLE paper. But you MUST attend every day. You MUST ask questions. You MUST work hard. And he IS willing to help.
I recommend Dr. Stewert to every student. If you're a student looking for a challenge, he's your guy. If you've been coasting through college, he'll definitely give you a wake-up call. Don't be afraid to stop by his office, he's a very personal guy. One of Buff states finest
He is a challenging professor and you definitely need to buy the textbook. There are pop quizzes for each chapter. He is a funny guy. If he sees that you are trying, he;ll take that into consideration for your grade. If you are looking for a challenging class, go for it.
Before this class I had a slight interest in sociology but now that interest has been completely wiped off. This class is beyond difficult. In a class of 138 the highest test score was 86. The second highest test score was 7, besides to insult every race possible. Lastly all he talks about is marijuana. Also you MUST ATTEND EVERY CLASS.
Class is very hard, the text book is boring. You get at least 2 pop quizzes every week. His test make no sense. He is interesting to listen to and is a very kind and helpful person. You have to be very responsible to take his class. It requires extensive reading and deep thinking. And a lot of studying. If your not a reader don't take this class.
He's a trip to say the least. He has one of the hardest classes I've taken but is willing to help if you ask. His lectures rarely stay on track so the book is very necessary. His tests are random facts from the book so you NEED TO KNOW YOUR STUFF. He's funny but his class is a challenge- if you're lazy don't take it.
Challenging.
Hardest class ever. DO NOT TAKE. Have a quiz everyday, read a chapter or more everynight, calls out people in class and picks on them, gets way off topic, thinks he knows everything, likes to show off his knowledge. Puts a curve on grades cause everyone does bad. avoid the class at all costs
Must be willing to be in class and study to pass his class. Very helpful and nice guy!
By far the worse class i ever took in my life. He is one professor who doesnt teach. His lectures are mostly shouting people out and asking stupid questions that noone knows. His tests are multiple choice but are abcdefghi. If he come into the class and hears one person talk he gives a quiz. If you talk again he gives another. Dont take the class!!
Ron Stewart will not admit when he is wrong on a test. He is a very stubborn man with unfairly hard and too frequent testspop quizzes. It is passable but if you wish to get a good grade you must be able to pick into his mind to come up with te right answer. Toughest professor at Buffalo State. You must avoid at all costs.
do not take him
I was extremely interested in a possible SOC major, however this man robbed me of ever wanting to hear the word again. Lectures are pointless and all over the place. He is rude and has more confidence than the entire cast of Jersey Shore. However, if you show up to class and show improvement in grades over time he will curve your grade.
He uses a mic and it is extremely hard to understand, pop quizzes all the time. Textbook is a necessary or you will fail. A lot of reading, uses students a lot during class. Would not recommend taking his class if it isn't in your major do not take it!
He is really funny and loves to interact with the class. He assigns a lot of reading and his quizzes and test are largely based off that. If you need help you have to seek it out he isn't the type to come up to you and baby you. Also take advantage of your TA's they really know what they are talking about.
Dr. Stewart is a challange; makes you work for your grade. However, he is extremely nice and African American family class is fun-he makes it fun. Just work hard and you will be on Dr. Stewarts good side. Hes really a sweetheart!!
Dr. Stewart was one of my favorite professors here at BSC. Yes, his class(es) were definitely a challenge, no doubt. Yet you won't ever have to wonder what you're paying for taking his class. His daily pop quizzes , readings , and exams taught me self discipline & molded me to be a better student. He's passionate in everything he teaches.
Pro's- High expectations, excellent person for this relevant material. Con's: promotion of traditional sexism- shames females for wearing lower cut shirts and makes prideful jokes about "sleeping" in all the girls dorms when he was in college. Refuses to understand why people who've experienced sexual assault don't get over it. Awareness needed!
Great professor; keeps you interested during lectures and a lot of class discussions. Not a tough grader but you have to get used to his testing style. Only cons are the pop quizzes that he has waiting for every chapter and the textbook reading all the time.
He will all too often get distracted and will not lecture on the material for the exam, READ THE TEXTBOOK. Pop quizzes all the time, six exams in the class total. Has made girls feel uncomfortable in class with his comments and will also make an exhibit of people from other races/religions/ethnicities so be prepared to get called on.
One of the greatest professors I have ever had. His classes are HARD but he gives you multiple chances to get a high grade. He talks a lot about racial inequality which is a problem in America. The only people who feel uncomfortable are those who refuse to admit there is a problem. Overall, READ, READ, READ. There is no passing without reading.
Dr. Stewart is quite possibly one of the best professors on campus. He is very knowledgeable and passionate about the subject matter. For this class, it's as simple as reading the chapter, taking down the notes from the power points and showing up to class. His tests and quizzes are based largely off of his lectures and the textbook.
Tests are very hard, textbooks are required. He takes a lot of test questions from the books, so be ready to read A LOT. Sometimes is very hard to understand and I found it hard to follow his lessons and take notes
He gives great lectures and gets everyone involved in discussions. The tests rely mainly on the lectures, so it's important to show up to class. Reading the textbook is really important too though, because the pop quizzes are straight from the book.
he is a cool person but a hard teacher
cool teacher, but tests are hard if you do not read the text books and do not study from your notes. gives pop quizzes very often so be prepared! you can not skip class it is held against you and you lose a lot of points if you do.
If you dont read the book, you will fail. A pop quiz FOR EVERY CHAPTER.
Professor Stewart is a great guy, but he makes the class very difficult. If you don't read the textbook, you will not pass. He gives many pop quizzes, and the tests are based on very small details he either says in class or that are in the textbook. he goes off track during class and you never know what to write down. Go to class to pass!
Some lectures are hard to follow, but they invoke thought provoking discussions about things relating to the AAF. I've learned how to think outside of the box and not remain "conceptually incarcerated". Take excellent notes, be engaged in discussions, and don't be on your phone!
He is a tough teacher, but well worth the work and he will recognize it. Just read as much as you can, come to class, and participate. I literally got 7/10 on my pop quizzes but since I showed up he curved my grade significantly. He literally changed my life by offering advice to advance my degree and wrote an amazing letter of recommendation.
He is a very nice and funny teacher. It is a very intense class, so if you're expecting an easy A, that won't happen. However, he does everything to help you succeed.. He also does give very uncomfortable scenarios, but I just looked past those. He also looks like he stepped out of 70's California, so that's pretty cool too.
Professor Stewart classes will drive you crazy. The pop quiz's can be back to back for a couple weeks and the "not listed" questions had me reconsidering college all together. His classes will set a standard that you can build on for your entire college career. He general cares about the students and gets angry if he see's failure or inequality.
Dr Stewart cares for his students but he makes you work for your grade. It upsets him if he see students aren't trying. Make sure you keep up with reading b/c he give pop quizzes. His test can be challenging but he does give a curve. He's pretty funny so lectures are light-hearted. Beware of a final group project.
He had pretty high standards that he wants everyone to meet , but it is understandable. You must read and attend every class. he test bare based on class lectures and the reading. this class made me study more than i ever had to in my college class. however i am thankful for it because it pushed me so now i know that i can do the work if i try.
My favorite professor of all time, not only a great teacher but a legendary hilarious man. If you use the sociological imagination you will find that some of these people hate on this man because they are either jealous or a b%^#*. If you dont like him you should probably be more like him. A living legend: take his classes before he's done teaching
Dr. Ron Stewart is passionate about what he teaches. He is an intelligent and gifted professor. His tests prepared me for tests I needed to complete for my job. That was a nice surprise. If you take any of his classes, take class serious, do the reading, and study. Thank you Dr. Stewart!
Professor Stewart is hands down one of the best professors at buff state. His classes are extremely difficult but worth it. He makes you work for your grade and you will get the grade you deserve. You will learn a lot more than just the material in his class. Comes off very intimidating but will help you when you need it. Highly recommended.
Probably one of the best professors yet. Pop quizzes are given at least 2 times a week based on chapters from the book. Exams are quite difficult if you dont study but the material is sort of interesting. You have to put in the work in order to get a good grade. It wont be an easy A, but its totally worth it !
He is overall a good professor, he just has his moments when he gets frustrated. Expect a pop quiz every time he tells you to read a chapter, and make sure you pay attention to the lectures in class everything he says is valuable and it will most likely be on the exams. You have to come to class you wont pass if you don't. Group Project at the end
Hes very Blount and tells it like it is and wont mislead you. His test are tough because he wanna be tricky so you gotta pay attention
For it to be an introduction class , I would say he was teaching as if it was a 300 level course. Which wasnt bad at all times because he prepared us & showed us what college is really about. I enjoyed the class just hated getting pop quizzes every other day.
Loved his inspiration. Always can expect the unexpectable. Teaching makes you think about your personal perspectives verses the reality of it.
Honestly, Ron Stewart is the best professor I have ever had. Yes his class is hard, you must purchase the course materials, lecture heavy, and you will be presented with a multitude of pop quizzes! But if you are passionate about learning not just a recieve a grade take his class! He's funny and inspirational. I definitely recommend you take him!
This man be ODEEIN! You always gotta read whatever chapters he tells you to read cause if you don't you're not gonna pass any of them pop quizzes. You deadass gotta buy the textbooks. His multiple choice exams be having options a through h. Hardest exams I ever took. He's kinda funny sometimes but be ready to work dum hard.
this man is known for pop quizzes, dont think were lying. You will have to buy the textbook and read the chapters to pass the quizzes and exams. He is very old school, no power-points. you will have to take notes. He is very easy on extra credit. Very professional and funny. NO phones, you will get yelled at. miss more than 5 classes, youll fail.
Yea no, Honestly so hard of a professor and a GPA killer, u have to go to class very lecture heavy. Pop Quiz pretty much twice a week its crazy. 50 Question tests In person and barely any material posted online. I recommend taking a different professor unless your very passionate about sociology and wanna be tested lol.
Wouldn't recommend this professor to my worst enemy. constantly giving out pop quizzes, complaining to the people who are in class about the people who don't show up, has a tendency to talk over student explaining things and tends to go on long tangents. Brings up depressing topics that aren't relevant I could go on and on my advice would be: RUN!
No power points or anything posted in blackboard. Sometimes you'll get as many as four pop quizzes in one class. 90% of the pop quizzes are from the reading rather than the lecture, but you have to come to class. miss no more than five. Be prepared to not only read at home but also in the class, he likes to randomly call on students.
I'd recommend Ron Stewart on the condition that you engage with the material seriously enough to have the capacity to articulate the underlying structure of the book and his lectures, basically, you should be able to recognize that chapter three is applying the concepts explained in chapter one. Besides that, he sincerely cares for his students.
Dr Stewart is intense, says many questionable things during class about women, people with disabilities. He is ON YOUR BACK about coming to class and participating. You will talk in class if you like it or not lol. However, he cares about your education and that you get the most out of college. He tests your basic knowledge daily, come prepared!!!!
