Not warm at all. Hated term project. No guidance.
If you hate long lectures, then he's the guy for you! He's a pretty good prof! He tries to keep the class interesting, which is very important when your trying to learn something. Can be a bit slow on making the powerpoint slides available to students (usually the stuff his midterms and finals are on). I would take another class of his for sure!
he is annoying in the way he teaches, offers bonuses for attendance cuz ppl never go to his class. He does useless class group work that ppl spend talking the whole time. his tests, he deducts marks for ones you get wrong. the class failed the final cuz we didn't learn anything in the class.
Ron is a good guy, tries hard although he is still new at teaching and thus ends up giving some pretty bad exams. The project was unorganized and quite open ended for writing style. With some better midterms questions and more direction on the project he could be one of the best teachers at Langara
Only touches on parts of the chapters in each class. Talks about "things that aren't on the test but are important to know in life" Instead of going into detail about the things we SHOULD know on the test. If you would like to home school yourself take this course as you will not learn anything in class. Not impressed.
He's a pretty nice guy, but his tests are absolutely ridiculous. To prepare for his tests, you have to know EVERYTHING on his powerpoint slides; he asks very specific questions, instead of focusing on broad topic understanding.
I felt like I have not learned anything from this professor, short of a bunch of theories that I could have read in the textbook. Ron is a very frustrating marker, marking harder on high performance students, while giving leeway for the weaker ones. Very disappointing.
worst teacher I've even had. Teach us nothing, really boring class, plus he thinks he is the funny guy.
Worst prof I have ever had and will ever have. Rants on about useless junk. Does not even teach anything. Skims over pointpoint for chapter. Shows videos in class that are irrelevant. Easy marker, but you wont learn anything. You will fall asleep every class. Only take him for marks, not if you are interested in the subject. Cheers.
i found this professor to be helpful, full of humour, interactive, and a delight to be around, his classes definitely opened my eyes, giving my a better understanding of the business enviroment around me and the dynamic surronding workplace relationships unlike other classes i actually enjoyed going to his class, hoping to see him teach other class
Ron is simply AWESOME! Ron is very helpful, relaxed, funny, patient, knowledgable and just an all around cool guy. He made class very fun. In terms of marking Ron is very fair. Be sure to study the powerpoints. I hope I get to take a class with him again! For more ratings check out Concordia University. He has a rating of 4.9 there.
For those how are whining likely didn't read the text and by read I don't mean a once over, and you're done. I mean read, re-read, understand, and comprehend. Then take notes, then study his powerpoints. After all that you better start practice testing yourself. If you do all of the above you probably aren't complaining 'cause you got a good grade.
Ron is a great teacher very help full, I recommend taking his ob class, P.s. Always come to class on time. His exams cover the information in his power point presentations, a lot of in class group work, so make sure to sit beside people you think you can work with,
Awesome teacher! Very creative & interactive. He makes us learn out of context - which doesn't work for some. Doesn't teach from the textbook word-for-word, which is good b/c he's not supposed to. We're adults, don't need to be read to. If you ask him for help, he'll set aside time personally for you. Just study, come on time, and have fun!
Spends too much time doing "group assignments" rather than lecturing. Seems unorganized, and when he changes standards/ requirements, he doesn't remember unless he is reminded by students. I thought this class would be interested, but I lost interest when he goes on and on about irrelevant topics. If possible, avoid taking his classes.
His teaching style is considered as doing case studies that take up majority of the class. He emphasizes on having his notes printed out ahead of class, but doesn't even use them. Essentially the same as taking a distant ed course. Do that, or take the course with another instructor.
If TEDTalks weren't readily available online, he would be out of a job. Unclear with his expectations, and you're never sure of your grade. Insists he's all about class discussion yet laughs in your face if he doesn't agree with what you have to say. Also - DON'T BE LATE - UNLESS you're his favourite. Turned an interesting topic into a bore.
I've taken a couple of Ron's classes. He is quite exceptional and qualified in his knowledge and delivery of information. He can be particular on the written portions of his exams. He creates a great learning environment by not tolerating a poor attitude and lack of effort. He does everything to help you if you want to learn. Forget the whiners!
His class is not easy. However it is easy to get an A if you work. By work I mean you read your chapters before class. You attend class. You participate in class. And you study- hard. I very much enjoyed the class, but I also work very hard for my A. I think he's a great teacher if you show you're putting in effort.
Wel... it was difficult I should say. Exams especially. He explains well though, but to get a good mark you have to REAd A LOT!
Ron comes off as a good guy, but is really a bit of a power tripping prof. He tries to up hold standards and allow his class the ability to put in their input but this is only SURFACE LEVEL stuff. 80% of classes are spent discussing irrelevant topics, or Ron trying to get answers out of students. [This is a classic"readthetextbook" kinda class]
I really liked Ron! Class subject wasn't the most interesting, but he made it much more bearable with his jokes. Tests were difficult so you have to study. If you ever have any questions or need clarification you can talk to him after class and he gives you his cell phone number so that you can call him. Overall i'd take a class with him again.
Velin for the win! Loved his class.
I don't suggest people to take him.Ron doesn't really teach,he just talks about some vague concepts and ask us to do some personality tests and analyse the result. As he doesnt really teach, we can only study the text and notes come from the publisher. The project is quite challenging, really need to spend lot of time and effort to get this 20%
Doesn't follow the book at all, I had to read it after the class to prepare for the midterm and final. However, his classes were rather fun - we had a lot of group work, a lot of speaking -but I really had to study on my own since we did not cover anything in the class.Sometimes Ron was too straight-forward,he can embarrass someone without noticing
I think he's a good professor, and his teaching is useful and realistic. You must work hard to get A though. The most difficult part is the project.
he does not teach you anything you might as well not go to class and teach your self he flip flops all over random unrelated topics in class and tries to pull the answers out of people, he tries to be a life coach but is certainly not a teacher, i would suggest avoiding any of his classes at all cause
Best prof out there. Our class average for the two midterms were in the mid 80's. RECOMMENDED over any other OB prof out there!
For Bus482 at SFU - Loved the class in general, unique teaching style but had no overall problem with it. However, imagine this analogy: The textbook was say Delta, the exam case was say SFU Burnaby, the exam questions were say Horseshoe Bay. That's how little connection there was. Essentially no connections. Not reflective of eachother overall.
He will probably not teach you anything. He flip flops all over the place and spends his classes calling out students and embarrassing them. He tries to psychoanalyze everyone, asking personal questions. He is not meant to be a teacher. He is unhelpful and will make nonsense rules and requests. Do not take a class with him
Hard marker, hard exams, hard project, a 3-4 page assignment almost every week, and a 15% participation mark that is arbitrary. Don't bother taking him if you want a good mark. There are other much easier OB profs out there. I regret taking him, and this is coming from somebody who's getting either a B or B+ in his class.
worst teacher i have ever met
Horrible prof singles people out and sometimes just straight out rude and his assignment expectations are very confusing and far from what the assignment has asked your to do.
Besides the quizzes their is absolutely no point in going to the lecture. He just rambles about random stuff and does hour long demonstrations to prove a 10 second point. His lack of lecturing makes the midterm and assignment very difficult. Avoid!
Ron is a great presenter and that makes him a very qualified teacher to teach this course. His in-your-face approach engages the entire class to participate. I felt inspired to do well in his class. Though intimidating from day one, it was probably the most useful class at Langara. I took this class for fun, and boy, Ron delivered.
His class was my very first class at Langara. Not bad overall, but you will have to do tons of reading! Midterms and final all based on the book.Don't really like his manner to annoy particular ppl with the questions, but his class is not boring.
I probably won't take his class again. The project was towards my personal interests but get stuck in a bad group and the experience is ruined. BUSM4120 should NOT be an online course- if offered don't do it- take the classroom version and make your life much easier. 2 hour conference calls every 2 weeks and video discussions were a waste of time.
This guy's on a major power trip. He will single handedly ruin your GPA. Avoid at all possible cost. Worst mark I've ever received at Langara.
Heed my warning. Avoid Ron's classes at all cost. I didn't think professors had much bearing on my GPA until I took BUSM 4120 with him. Ron teaches or should I say rules with an iron fist. Register in his courses at your own risk, but don't say you weren't warned.
He asked personal questions that were not related to school matters. He singled students out and embarrassed them. He needs to understand that his bullying tactics to conquer people's public speaking fears can actually create public speaking fears. Not helpful. I've enjoyed public speaking classes, but I dropped his class. Seek another teacher.
Be prepared to work. He wants you to be 100% engaged at all times, this means no cellphone or computer use is allowed in class. Attendance is absolutely mandatory, you lose 3% per absences and 1.5% if you are late. He can seem condescending at times. He does genuinely have your success at heart, but his approach is definitely more tough love.
had him a year ago, although his class were mandatory (i had 8:30am with him) you didn't need to show up for some of your classmates presentation. There were many days off really worth the mandatory attendance.
Ron is so passionate about the subjects he teaches and he truly has everyone's best interests at heart. If you expect to get away with doing minimal work in his class and still pass, this isn't the class for you. You're in post-secondary, so expect to have to work hard for good grades. Put in the effort and you'll pass with flying colors.
Passionate about his work. He is funny, easily annoyed, but good teacher. If your looking for an easy grade booster, THIS IS NOT THE CLASS FOR YOU. You have to "DELIVER" in order to get the mark you deserve. I had him for Winter 2015, and it was a fun class. This course will really improve your ability to present materials.
-Hard to get a hold of- Arrogant domineer - Late for final exam - Gave assignment after semester was over(is this allowed?) - Pleasant, however he liked to be centre of attention and wants you to engage him - Would provide unclear answers to questions - Does not give marks in timely matter - Text was barely used and not useful (dry read) -
Ron is a hard marker....
worst experiance like a nightmare take his course at own risk
Forces students to buy textbook, read from it and learn from it on their own. Hardly ever teaches in class and if by any chance he teaches its like in last 10 mins of the lecture in a fast forward manner and in a flash he completed 2 chapters. Tests and quizzes are like set to fail students. Gives lecture about his personal boring life nothing else
Don't take this course unless you're forced to. Absolute worst professor I've ever had in the 6 years I've been in post secondary. I honestly don't know how he hasn't been fired yet. He is so arrogant and rude to all students. If you want clarification on assignments, don't even bother asking. His instructions are unclear and he doesn't clarify.
Terrible teacher. Sprung new content on us hours before the final. Very unclear and unrealistic expectations: online, real-world, group project complete with video project. He is condescending and rude when you speak with him. He clearly hates teaching and should be excused from Langara. The worst teacher i've ever had.
This was the worst class I have ever taken with the worst teacher I have ever had. I don't usually write reviews but I think it's important to warn other students: DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH THIS TEACHER. He seems to be deliberately obtuse when answering questions. Makes clarifying his unclear instructions really frustrating. AVOID AT ALL COSTS
Taking this class with Ron was a complete waste of my time AND money. I have not learned a single thing in his class besides how professors who use their title to bully and humiliate students do exist. Class productivity is completely dependent on Ron's mood which is all over the place. Success depends on if Ron likes you not on your work ethic.
One of the worst professors I have encountered at my time in Langara. Decided to take the course because I thought it would be beneficial to pick up some public speaking skills, but I have not picked up any skills instead I have learned mostly about Ron's personal life. He offers no guidance for success in his class. TAKE HIS CLASS WITH CAUTION.
wastage of money for credits
One of the best professors of public speaking courses in Langara college. If you want to achieve professional excellency in public speaking, he is the only one who can make it possible in three months. If you just want to pass or to get grades better change your teacher or be really well prepared for the adventurous journey.
Worst instructor. Don't take him. He will grow confidence in you. But he gives poor grades.
You will definitely fail you if you are just average speaker. He wants everyone to get least of marks. Please go find some other professor.
The worst instructor I've had! if you have the option of taking a different instructor for this course please do so. He gets extremely agitated when a student asks him a question. I honestly don't know why he's still teaching with his bad temper. Anyways, I took the same course with a different instructor, managed to get an A.
I'm so surprise why so many people gave him a low grade. But in my point of view, he's a good and fair teacher. The more you contribute to the class, the more you get from him. Fair enough? Sometime he told students the stories but it's not useless, it shows the real applied of the concepts in reality. Given marks reflect what you contribute, fair.
Very informative and straight forward prof. Ron provides alot of criteria to students including video tutorials, and feedback for each assignment. As long as you follow the requirements for above-satisfactory performance you will surely get a good grade. Most students are not used to the post-secondary workload and that is why they perform poorly.
Really interesting lectures One word for him - Amazing Just never be late for the class and attend all the classes.
Please dont take him save your money and take some another prof . Worst person ever seen in my life.
Absolutely worst teacher at lagnara. Door closes once the class starts if your late by one minute thats 2% of your final mark... No electronics, Jackets, or talking while hes talking or he will kick you out. Dont take if you dont need too
It was quite a pain at times taking his class. He did get mad over tiny details but toward the end, he did become more supportive. Finished with an A- but felt uncomfortable going to class several times.
I don't dislike or like him as a person, he can be caring, but as a teacher I would definitely not recommend. He thinks he is hilarious and he will talk about his personal life for most of the classes, out of all my Langara instructors Ron is definitely the worst, if you have a chance to change instructors I highly recommend you do it.
Ron was super helpful and I improved my public speaking skills through his class. He is very strict however, he truly wants his students to improve. If you want to be successful in his class , participation is very important. I would also recommend being on time and having your camera set up properly if your class is online.
Amazing instructor! If you want different and interesting classes, he is an excellent choice. You wil enjoy and you will not be in stress about grades. One of the best at Langara.
Ron is extreme w/ his emotions because of his passion. He can be totally supportive in conversation for your improvement, exerting extra efforts and rewards to motivate people, and can also be totally frustrated for complacent student. His grading is transparent and you can see where you at in his class. He also gives opportunity for extra credit
This is the best professor I have ever met in my life as he understand all the situations of students . If you are a international student then u must take this professor as he is very helpful and kind person.
Ron is an amazing professor. In person BUSM1500 is not exactly an easy course, it involves a lot of speaking in front of your other peers and that's not for everybody. On top of that, Ron pushes you to do your best. Some days you won't want to attend his classes, but at the end of them, you'll be happy you did. Guy's a legend. Prof worth taking.
I absolutely loved coming to Ron's class- he is, and I can't stress this enough, an AMAZING professor. His course is engaging, knowledgable, and you will definitely leave the class feeling very inspired. If I could take another class with him, I would in a heartbeat. He's always available for his students, 110% you won't regret taking his course!
Ron Velin is an excellent teacher. Tough grader though, but he is very fair. You can clearly see his passion for teaching as he really takes effort to explain very well in a creative way the concepts that have to be taught. He makes sure that every class is fun and very engaging. He even brings coffee for everyone from time to time.
He's more than an instructor. When you compare this with other instructors, I attribute it to his more humane approach and to the fact that he has gone out of the mold in order to teach something. Even if you think that it's a little difficult for you in the classes, just focus on learning something. Rest assured it will come out a perfect end.
Ron was one of my best teachers in Langara. He inspired me to improve. His methodology consists of learning and then explaining to others. About technical things that I learned, I can say how to get to the root of the problems and then work from there to have changed. You can apply that to everything you want.
I really enjoyed Ron's classes because he was very enthusiastic, empathetic and energized. I loved the fact that he provided us with videos with the class topics, because that personally made it easier for me to study for his exams. I cannot say that it is easy to get good grades with him, but he is fair, and that he forces us to give our best.
Ron is one of the best instructors I had during my PDD in Marketing Management. He is passionate about teaching. Instead of relying on tedious book readings, Ron managed to give his best to make every class different. He is human and cares about students who are willing to learn. By the end of the term, he became a great friend of our class.
There is something extraordinary about Ron, his dedication to the job. He is a firm believer if fundamental values. I took his class for my personal growth, and I asked him some tough questions in the process. His style is more coaching-oriented, and I don't think anyone else can teach negotiation better than him.
There are a lot of information and theories for this course but he made sure to make learning fun through exciting activities in class. After this course, our class established a good relationship with him which rarely happens with other professors that we had. He is one of a kind!
So knowledgeable & makes everything so easy to understand. He used to make lectures soo fun by making us watch small clips from famous movies so we can remember them. His class was always interactive and he really cared about every student and tried his best to get them through the course. Amazing teacher who truly cared for every student.
He was not only a great teacher but also a great instructor who you can rely on. His lectures were full of fun, to be honest. He was giving real-life examples to which you can relate. Great way to learn! Wish every other teacher was like him too. We never lost touch with him. It is an honour to meet such a man!
Ron is a passionate instructor who is dedicated to unlocking the leadership potential in his students. He empowers his students by delivering thought-provoking lessons that delves into the emotional process people experience in a change initiative and the tools that future leaders need to keep our teams focused and productive.
If you are enthusiastic about learning and developing your leadership skills, I highly recommend signing up to Ron Velin's courses. His classes are fun, real, and engaging. He doesn't look for perfection in our course deliverables, he simply wants us to give tour best efforts and continuously improve. To be honest, one class/week was not enough.
The worst professor that I have ever had. You will never know what is going to happen in class. His mood changes every time. My Monday mornings with him were the worst time ever in Langara.
His teaching style is more like a life coach bc he only talked about his life. No teaching in class. The assignment have no rubric AT ALL. We experienced the time that he became angry with students for arriving late to class. Super uncomfortable atmosphere. He also wastes 30 mins of class time criticizing those who were tardy. Not recommend.
Notice that some honest comments got deleted from here. Maybe he tried to delete the negative feedback about him. He had a bad temper and could yell to you. Rude and very unprofessional one. Not recommend
Verbally berates students and makes unnessesary comments about students. There is no reason you should be yelled at for being late by MINUTES. Incredibly agrumentative with students. DO NOT TAKE.
This is just the worst teacher ever. Talks about his relationship issues during class, which he uses as a reason to have a bad attitude during class. I have never hated a professor more. Do not take this class expecting to have a good teacher. Very unprofessional, do not take class.
Every lecture varies based on his mood as his emotions can take over the class. He's very condescending and makes unnecessary comments towards students as he will belittle you in front of the class. Mr. Vehlin is not very professional at all and makes an easy class unbearable as you're forced to come if you don't want to lose marks.
He is little strict .Overall, It will be okay if you are attending his lectures on daily basis and remember BE ON TIME + BE PROFESSIONAL .
It is an easy course but he make it very tough for you. You will lose marks if you are 1 minute late in class. He don't teach anything related to presentations in the class but his useless activities. His grading criteria is also hard to understand.
No exams or written work. Puts heavy emphasis on confidence because the whole class is mostly about speaking. 30-45 mins of class time is dedicated to "warm-ups".
He has psychological problems that should be addressed before becoming an instructor. His bad mood reflects how he sees himself, and the teaching is 10% instruction and 90% negative comments and bad mood. The comments from November 9-12 seem very suspicious.
Had my first day with him today, came to class 4 minutes late and he makes me wait outside for 25 minutes along with 4 other students. This is supposed to be a straightforward class and I could already tell he was gonna make the class way harder than it should be. He's so passive aggressive. don't take
GOOD GUY, average professor with a very interesting way of teaching
This professor teaches negotiation but you won't learn anything in his class everything you already know is the key. He is more focused on asking what you did in your weekend rather than teaching children how to negotiate. Take it only for credits but if you want to learn something there is nothing to learn from him.
This professor was late to class over six times but penalized students harshly for minor lateness. They discouraged open discussion, often interrupted students, and once used inappropriate language in class. Attempts to make up for unprofessional behavior—like bringing candy—felt manipulative.
Professor Ron Velin is not the easiest professor, but his class on negotiation skills is worth it if you commit. Be on time, stay engaged, and participate actively, otherwise you'll miss the value. Once you understand his unique behavior, you'll realize there's a lot to learn from him.
