He opens his class with the staement "this class is a joke class, and not to be taken seriously". This really set the tone for the course, read his class notes before a test and you're sure to get an A+!!!

Ron is one of the best professors I've had at Normandale. He is funny, down to earth, and fun. He posts notes from class on-line, and gives great lectures that are entertaining. I would suggest taking Ron for any class you are considering.

Dr. Ward a pain in the neck and a huge downer. He does nothing to to hold my interest and his hysterical rantings on issues that have little to no relevence to the class make it almost impossible to stay for the whole hour.

Good teacher, lots of lecturing but would rather sit and listen to lecture than have to write 20 papers on glaciers and how the soils differ. Great guy very down to earth. I would recommend him.

Dr. Ward does not have an easy class, especially if you like to skip class, but he has an ability to keep you entertained while teaching. He has a broad knowledge of the meterial and respects his students. GREAT TEACHER

Goes on crazy rants and I didn't learn anything of substance. I think students give him good ratings because he is intense and I guess that makes him interesting for some people. I would not recommend this class.

I dread going to this class. There is no participation so it's really hard to make myself go and also hard to pay attention because it's so boring. He puts the notes on line which is nice but it sucks because your whole grade is based off of 3 tests and 2 quizzes and tests are hard so if you do bad on them you're screwed!

He is very knowledgeable and entertaining, but VERY egocentric and can be insanely condescending. He is one of the biggest hypocrits I have ever met. I was very excited about his class when I first started but after talking to him one-on-one a few times I realized he is very full of himself and seems to default to thinking all students are dumb.

Wow, is all i have to say to the people rating him poorly... one of the easist proffs imo, If you show up to his class and listen you will get an A in his tests, He even goes over them befor you take the test... This is not a slacker class but all you have to do the work. Grades from 4 news assaingments, 2 quizes and midterm/final... all laid out

He is pretty easy teacher and very lay back. There is only 4 tests 2 maps/midterm/final. I did not realize Geography consist of Soils,Vegs,History, Politics,and Energy Resources etc...the Soils and Vegs can be alittle hard to understand, but overall it was a pretty easy class. He does give you points for class participation and showing up to class. I would recommend of taking this class.

Ron, as he prefers to be called, is a great instructor. His classes are not easy, but if you study, you will get an A. His lectures are very interesting, he has a variety of stories derived from personal experience. Attendance is required but if you show your commitment, he is very understanding.

Ron is a great teacher. He is very intellegent, very well informed, and very passionate about what he teaches. Using a mixture of humor, websites, and other methods, the course material is very easy to understand and comprehend. Beware, however, his tests are very hard. He does not give you grades. You earn them. One of the best. Period.

Great Professor. Really likes what he's doing and it shows through his teaching. He actually knows what he is talking about and is excited to let you know too. His tests are pretty tough though, but rightly so. Just go to class, study quite a bit before tests, and you will have a great time in the class!

Took his 1102 class in Spring '06 and loved his teaching style so then took 1123. Very laid back/funny; available to talk to; no book needed-uses printouts. Does current events at start of class & Google Earth for examples. Explains type of questions for tests & tells what questions from previous tests may be on final. Highly recommended.

Ron is a great professor. He is very easy going and has a good sense of humor. He always does news and current event discussion at the beginning of class. All of his notes are available on D2L, which is really nice. However, he does have an attendence policy, but it's very reasonable. I would definitely recommend him!

Worst Teacher ever. I dont know how people can say he is good. Unless you like teachers that think they are funny, but ARE NOT! All they do is blab about the notes and then you have a mid term and a final. Thats it. He gives two quizzes one on memorizing countries and the other on the same. HARDEST CLASS EVER!!

The class is fun and interesting, mostly because Ward is a great performer, and also because there is a lot of discussion about current events and controversial subjects. The tests are pretty easy, and you have a choice of writing a paper or doing service learning for the other 25% of your grade.

Had him for Cartography and GIS, I have also had him for Human Geography and World Regional Geography. He's awesome. He's HARD, but believe me, it's worth it. At first I thought I would like him, but was disappointed when I saw how he taught his class. First part of class always devoted to news, and the inevitable op-ed from Ron. As fun as you may thinks this sounds, or easy A or whatever, BAM comes the map test, and he wants you to label every river in Canada. I had a 4.0 before his class.

Ron Ward is the best! The class was challenging and exciting and I learned a lot. It wasn't easy. He is a genius, funny, opinionated and down to earth/cool. He is passionate about geography, he cares about his students -- he is a great educator.

One of the coolest human beings, ever. Show up for class, you should have no trouble. Tests are not easy, but everything else is. Class doesn't require too much outside effort. Just show up for class and listen. Often found myself genuinely interested, and I was actually learning quite a bit, Glad I was paying for knowledge instead of just a grade.

Incredible teacher.Goes through notes and a little current events everyday. 2 map quizes(easy points). 2 tests (more challenging you need to study, take notes, and pay attention in class). 1 Final paper that he is more than willing to help you with but it IS challenging!He knows so much information and opened my eyes constantly.Very opinionated FYI

Taking this class (Human Geography) changed my life. It directed me to exactly what I was to do with my degree and how I want to live in the world. I owe it to Ron, I wish the class was longer. There is so much more he could have taught me. So friendly, and he really does care about your education. And he is not Santa Clause. :)

He puts all of his notes online, you usually don't need to buy the text book. (he tells you during the first class) People have complained about his quizzes, but it helps to know where things are. He also incorporates daily news into every class. He goes beyond the base knowledge needed to complete a class, it is what makes his classes interesting

unfortunately, this class is hard, its the hardest one I have ever had. However, he makes this class fun by givinng foolish news and stuff. He doesnt give to his students too much test, just 4 for whole semester. They are hard but if you work hard, it will be ok! Over all, I think he is 3/4

Dr. Ward is quite a character! I had absolutely no interest in taking this class, but Dr. Ward's method of teaching made this my favorite class to attend. Show up for class, because he covers news stories that you cannot access from D2L. Very helpful with the term paper. If you have to take geography, do yourself a favor and take with Dr. Ward.

Ron's awesome. He is extremely knowledgeable and a pretty great teacher. Keep up with the easy map assignments, study for the 2 tests and write a goood research paper. If you can do all that you're golden. Not a huge work load. Ron's always there to help when ever you have questions. i strongly recommend him.

Ron is a very knowledgable teacher.The maps are easy points as well as the map quizzes. The tests are a lot tougher and you will need to study for them. He is a hard grader on the intro of the paper, but will make any corrections to get you a higher grade if you bring it to him. He does not just give out A's, you will have to earn it! Tough class!

Honestly have NEVER been in a class that I've loved more. Ron makes his class interested and relative. I'm an elementary ed. major and I've learned more in his class then in my past 3 semesters at Normandale. Way to end my last semester right. Study and take notes you'll at least pass.

I had Ron for an online class for human geography. I thought that the discussions he posted were interesting. I believe the class was based a lot on current issue or news. Summary papers are used to write about current news story and how it relates to human geo. I thought it was a decent class. You have a lot of flexibility but make sure you study.

LOVED taking Dr. Ward for Geography of MN. Goofy sense of humor and very passionate about what he teaches... THOSE two reasons alone are reasons to take his course. Those are the reasons he is great at what he does! Would definitely recommend his Geography class!

Ron is the best professor I've ever had! He's such a cool guy with so many experiences to share that relate with what you're learning. He lays the class out really nicely so if you just follow along with the notes and study and do the map assignments, it's an easy A and quite enjoyable. Just don't ditch class cause he has strict policy.

Ron is literally one of the best teachers I have ever had. I usually don't pay much attention in class, but he is funny and knows how to keep you focused. You will want to study for tests, but he gives you everything you need to know in the D2L notes. I highly, highly recommend taking a class of his. I'm taking another class of his this semester.

Extremely knowledgeable! The only instructor I've had that can talk the whole time yet I'm intrigued the whole time. No need to buy the text book. All of the information you need for exams is in his word documents. I really liked Ron and wish I could take him for more classes. Highly recommended!

The usual study and do assignments and keep up with online schedule and you could earn an A. This was important material to learn Pretty opinionated but he has a PhD so guess he thinks he is entitled to that. He was great to help in any way but you have to put the effort in. Pretty much like real life do the work and you will succeed.

Nice man, didn't really like this class though. This courses mostly consists of reading through very long lecture notes and that learning style doesn't work for me. I also found that his opinions were in a lot of information and that sort of rubbed me the wrong way.

Ron's course on environmental issues should be required for all majors. I've never heard a more clear explanation of climate change. Also, plenty of documentaries complete with study guides. He's easily approachable and down to earth.

Ron offers great and educated perspectives and opinions. He is inspirational, although sometimes lectures can feel a little long. Very clear cut grading criteria for quizzes, but not for exams. If youre interested in geography try to get in his class! your knowledge and interest will grow significantly.

He sure knows a lot about geography. He has been to so many different countries and knows a lot about the countries that you learn about in his class. Had the best SI (Supplemental Instructor) helping out with this class:) So make sure to go to SI review sessions as much as possible because they do help.

Great course. Really interesting material. He was very responsive and helpful throughout the course. He was engaged and passionate. He had Interesting opinions on the material. He is a PHD and expects high quality work from students. Not a bird course. Textbook optional but I would recommend getting it. I would take another class from him.

Ron truly cares about his students. If you are struggling he will find a way to help you weather you want him to or not. His lectures are amazing because you are mainly learning from stories he tells about his travels around the world! He has lived an amazing life.

Alright (sigh) I don't know where to start. This guy is a character, I will say that. He is pretty funny, knows material well and really could be a great teacher. There are definitely qualities to him but his downfalls really do outshine what good he has to offer. Cons: Rants, Politics and Theories that cloud the course material. Terrible grader!

I can't believe that i took class from this professor. he gives less than 1 min for each question in the test. I think he should understand that students are not a machine, they are human being. Though I got grade B in this class but I am not that much happy with him for sure. It was like a torture for me.

Ron is great! The class topic definitely seemed dull to me at the beginning, but his lectures are incredibly interesting. There is one paper, a couple of map quizzes, and two exams. The exams are pretty hard, so you will have to work for your grade. Yes, Ron does tend to go on rants - but I'd take that over a dull lecture any day. Cares about you!

Ron will grade fairly and easily to those who put forth an effort. He has a project due on the last day of the semester involving either 10 hrs of community service or a 5-10 page report paper. He will look over the paper personally for you and correct grammar. If you have him do this you should have no problem getting an A. Takes Attendence.

Ron was very organized for an online professor! He participated w/students in discussion, inspired us. He chose great current events, & wonderful stories. He has a great sense of humor. His tests were tough, timed, you have to know your stuff. Only drawback were maps were terribly hard to read and get accurate so tough to score a great grade there.

I had Ron for Geography of MN, what a joke. The class consisted of his talking about his opinion of the recent news, then through a bunch of slides. All the quizzes and test are really easy if you try. If you show up you'll pass. Easy A for me, but all I learned in class was his opinions.

Ron is very opinionated but knows a lot about the world. He has traveled to dozens of countries and he loves Google Earth. Participation is crucial & the maps are easy. Lectures get long and its hard to know exactly what to study for exams. Take advantage of office hours with him, though. By the way... DON'T buy a textbook! He uses his own notes.

Opinionated I'll say, but he says it like it is. There's more in this couse about human nature than most boring psychology courses. There's always something surprising going on. He doesn't care about political sides, just wants you to talk, and if you talk, he doesn't forget.

I loved this class. It was so much more than just finding places on a map. We got to know the culture and the uniqueness of each region. Granted he has a tendency to go off on tangents, but at least they are always interesting tangents. I would definitely recommend this class/teacher to anyone.

This class on human geography is really about everything you encounter every day. It really gives you a different perspective on working your 40 hour week and living for 'security' as Ron says. You have to pay attention and talk, but it's hard because he's talking some next level thoughts on society.

Attendance is mandatory, Ron will know if you go to class, leave class early, or comes to class late. However, if you like learning about things outside of the US, this class is for you. Tests are really easy if you study and go to class. You'd be watching videos that is only available if you go to class, make sure you take notes about those videos

Very caring and supportive instructor! Ron is very helpful in helping students with each of the maps, and wants you to do well. You do have to study for tests, but Ron tells you specifically what will be on it. Attendance is very important because he tells the class what will be on the test.

No book, everything is laid out on D2L. He called it a flipped class, where we talk about topics in the notes. If you miss a class, the talking points are also on D2L under discussions. He is tough on papers, but there's 4 of them and you'll get the hang of it.

I was disappointed in this course. It would have probably been better in person than online. The course is made up of 2 short writing assignments, 2 Exams, and 2 map quizzes. If you do poorly on 1 of the exams it is very difficult to get your grade back up. I would not recommend this course especially if you are considering taking it online.

I've taken pliantly of online classes, and this was definitely one of the most frustrating ones. The vast majority of the points come from quizzes and exams, with discussion posts being expected, but not allotted points. The professor seems knowledgable, but for a 3 credit general education course, I would''t recommend him.

This instructor has no respect for his students. It's unacceptable to grade on criteria not included in the instructions for an assignment. If you're a working adult who travels and relies on Wi-Fi from different locations, do not take this instructor. His notes are 50 pages long and won't always load properly.

super easy I did asynchronous online and he gives you the maps to print off that he uses for the quizzes. 3 tests a semester which includes the final and its all open note and 50 multiple choice. You have one region a week and you just take notes on a pdf thats 30 pages, but also not required. All the points are in the tests/quizzes which are easy

Despite the fact that everybody in love with prof Ron's personality, he is a horrible prof. No book for the class, only his notes. Not sure what to study. Quizzes and test are horribly timed. 5 min for 5 questions, and 15 for 25. His grading, even worse, took away points because my answer was not perfectly worded. Not student oriented at all.

I hate him. I never know how to study for the map quizzes since he provided none on D2L. I am a 3.9GPA student and will be lucky to get a C in this class. Tests are timed, and you get a minute per question, and they are very tough questions. Dr. Ward had captivating information in his PDFs and posed some interesting questions throughout the class, but I was not a fan of how he ran the class. He was extremely hard to get ahold of through email, taking up to a week to respond or just not responding at all. Additionally, he was often flat-out rude when responding to discussions.

Dr. Ron is accessible, and responds to emails within days. The paper was hard, but he looks drafts and says what to do to get a higher score. Exams are tough, but open on monday and stay open for a week, so there's time to study. He has zoom meetings to talk in person, and he's not rude at all...emails are overly interpreted, zoom him.

Honestly, I took this course because it fills a requirement I needed, and it looked easy (geography of the us and canada). I ended up learning a lot more than I thought I would - be sure to study for the map quizzes (especially the little 10 pt ones).

This is just the right class I need for a degree in environmental management. Topics included climate change, population, air and water pollution, environmental economics, and biodiversity. There's really no other class that has all these topics toogether. This class should be required for everyone.

Definitely take this class! This class is required for education degrees in Minnesota, and Ward's online class is a convenient way to get it done. The course is very interesting, and includes a lot of real world examples, and current events related to the class material.

I am currently in Ward's online Human Geography class. I need this course for a degree requirement in Secondary Ed. and I'm glad I'm taking it with this guy. He obviously knows what he's doing (smart), there's no required, expensive book (he has his own notes), and it's a 7 week short course to get the credits I need. He uses a lot of news.

Had Ward for world regional geography...cool class, with lots of stories about all his travels. He brings musical instruments from around the world into class and plays them...I wish I wrote all their names down. I do remember the cuica!

Just had his 7 week summer course in human geography. I'm an education major, and this is required for my degree. 3 map quizzes, 2 short papers, and 2 major exams, clearly laid out. A lot to do in 7 weeks, so I'm glad I took it on its own with this guy. Good discussion participation will bump up your letter grade if you're close.

This teacher pushes his skewed political views through newspaper articles and required papers that have nothing to do with MN Geography. If you want to hear about how MN Geography is racist this is the class to take. He uses his position of professor power to push political propaganda and we pay tuition to hear it.

I took Ron to satisfy an environmental literacy requirement at the U. I learned a lot about pollution, climate change, and alternative energy sources I can't believe aren't being used more (Ron is not a big fan of the fossil fuel lobby). No textbook, and 20% of the grade was based on watching environmental documentaries, which I like anyway.

While being an online course, I was emailed by Mr. Ward if I emailed him again I wold be reported for student harassment. As a student I was more professional then him. Also his GEOG 1102 class for me was first semester, he had put in a Incomplete on my transcript with no incomplete work contract until April, where I had reported his behavior.

Professor Ward was passionate about the class, but the content we were tested on was based on his opinions rather than explicitly stated facts. There were five to eight 'optional' discussions every week and he never had actual lectures, just his personal lecture notes which made studying for assessments hard. His critiques could come off as rude.

Overall the class is okay-ish. Heads up don't have your loved ones (my dad) get sick and pass away from cancer while taking this class because the professor will not care and email you back and I quote "I will not grant any extension to you, based on your father's (not yours) medical condition", and proceed to argue with you on top of all that!

If you need the credit, hes a good class he has interesting feedback. Class has 3 light exams on group of regions, 4 quizes on features of the world, and a pre quiz for every new unit. Ward is an okay professor. He's can be quite mean with his feedback and cares a LOT about discussions. He responds to every post for up to 2 weeks. While discussions aren't graded, it can rounded your grade up. The graded things are 3 quizzes, 2 essays, 2 exams. There are no videos, just his notes that are the lectures. Quiz2 & Exam1 were terrible.

Dr. Ron is quite a rollercoaster. He can have times where he is supportive and understanding, and other times where he has you crying. Human Geography was the first (and probably only) asynchronous class I took. His rules are very strict and if even have spacing off in your paper, he will bash you for it. It is like walking on eggshells with him.

The class is only graded by tests which I don't like personally but as long as you take notes and note the topic and location of the discussion materials, the tests are just fine. The mapping quizzes are easy you just have to take the time to label all of the places on a map.

Avoid this teacher at all cost! He has extremely passive aggressive and just plain rude responses. He is not forgiving at all about deadlines or assignments. He encourages questions but when a simple one is asked, he has rude remarks for anything. He just makes you feel extremely discouraged. So bad I dropped after about 3 weeks.

Big quizzes, no material to study from. Directions weren't clear, so I asked for clarification, and he replied in an informal and disrespectful manner. He had papers with certain sources to use. I had trouble finding a good source one time, so he gave me some. Then, after grading, he said, "This is too broad". But he was the one who gave it to me??

Another student joined the call since he made it an open call for anyone to join in the class, made me uncomfortable. This is the worst teacher I've ever had in my academic career. He will encourage you to ask questions and then belittle you when you reach out. He does not like it when you email him, and if you even get a response he will spell your name (and everything else) wrong. He hates his students lol. Ron is very mean, I asked if we can have a private discussion on D2L. B/C he doesn't communicate via email. His said, "Do not ask me any questions of a personal nature (that you don't want the entire class to see) - that is none of my business." If you ask for feedback on you test, he will post everything you got wrong for the whole class to see.

This professor was very disrespectful and unprofessional. He docked me points for saying mr ward on a paper and gave me a lesson abt it. I would email him about my essay topic he would leave me on delivered till after the essay and then say my topic was unacceptable. Apparently there are little to no available topics to write about, too sensitive.

Condescending, argumentative, unsupportive, and incredibly rude. This isn't an issue of people just being “too sensitive” either. Please, save yourself the stress and wait out the semester for a different professor. I'm telling you. If I didn't have an otherwise awesome exp at Normandale, I would have dropped out of college because of him alone.
