A good chunk of your final grade is based on participation, so you'd better talk!

Cares about students a lot. very enthusiastic. can be a tough grader.
Becker is really a great guy and very passionate about the material he is covering. Class attendance is a must as is reading every word of every assigned chapter in the book. It's a tough class with tough exams but he does grade on a curve and is sympathetic towards his students.
This was definitely my hardest class...you MUST attend class AND read the textbook. Do NOT get behind on the reading!! The exams are hard and he grades papers pretty harshly. Be sure to sit in the front in his class because he is hard to hear! He knows a lot about the material presented, but was not the greatest professor.
He was my favorite teacher; he was really understanding about first test and trying to ease the transition for freshman. He would give tips on how to take notes and how to study. He is a little tough but as long you read and go to class, the course isn't impossible. He is very helpful and very approachable. He will clarify any questions you have.
The class was not too hard as long as you keep up with the reading. Very Knowledgable about what he is teaching and keeps class interesting. Do not take this class if you want an easy A, but it is possible to do well if you put some effort in and the class is pretty interesting.
Can be a tough grader, but if you go to class consistantly and do your work you shoudn't do too bad. Class is interesting too.
Becker is cool. He makes the class enjoyable. You have to read the book and do the questions. A lot of the exams are from book material. Going to lectures is crucial too b/c there is stuff on the exam that is covered in lecture but not in the book. Really interesting class that I highly recommend.
He's a really great guy. Fun to listen to, I was never really into the subject. If you're a sleeper a seat in the front might help. Also if you find you have an interest in what he talks about go to him and talk about it. He's a really great guy. His Aides grade your papers though so watch out.
Probably one of my favorite teachers ever. He is very approachable, so asking questions is not hard to do. Class/material is quite interesting and easy to get into. He doesn't take attendance, but you need to attend because lecture material is on the exam. Had a few papers here and there, but the class is overall not bad. Just attend and study.
This professor is a really nice guy and pretty interesting, yet his class is veryyy tough. The reading and attendance to the class must be done in order to achieve an A on the exam, and the TA grades the papers incredibly harsh so it's pretty tough to get anything above a B. If you get an extra credit opportunity definitely DO IT. It helps a lot.
Very difficult. My hardest class by a long shot. Definitely show up to class and read the chapters.
He is a bad writer and grades your writing based on his standards. I have received A's on every paper I have ever written until this class. Now he is giving me b and c's. He is a fan of run on sentences.
This class is hard. The information may be interesting, but this man makes his tests extremely difficult. He is an unfair grader and not easy to talk to.
Becker is extremely passionate about the subjects he teaches and will provide interesting insight on the course material. Class is interesting and engaging and improved my writing skills.
I think Becker does an amazing job teaching this course. Definitely one of my favorite profs so far! The class itself is manageable as long as you keep up with the readings and study. Highly recommend both this class and Becker!
Taking this class was the worst experience I have had in college. I would never take this class with Dr. Becker.
He's a really cool guy who really wants his students to succeed. He does give extra credit opportunities and leads review sessions for exams. You really have to attend his lectures AND do the reading, though, if you want to do well
This is a REALLY interesting, and fairly easy class. He keeps it engaging by using lots of video clips and other media besides just lecturing. He really knows his stuff, and the topics covered are relevant and even sometimes fun (i.e. internet, music videos, etc.) He is a little bit awkward one-on-one, but I DEFINITELY recommend this class.
Although this class can be interesting at times, there is a lot of work and you have to keep up with the reading and attend lecture. He is not very helpful when you talk to him and he can be very unclear about expectations in the class. I would not recommend this class unless you have to take it, and you will have to work hard to get an A.
His class is very organized and well structured. Be sure to be SUPER CREATIVE for the last project...he was the leader in my small group and really wasn't helpful at all in letting us know how out of the box we could be. Hes helpful in office hours. Hes passionate about the subject. He's a hard grader though, don't study and you'll get a C at most.
Very, very knowledgeable on the subject, and gives very organized, structured lectures. Huge class. Gave ample chances for extra credit, and did much to help his students. Occasionally hard to reach because he has a hoard of UAs beforehand. Tests are fairly easy, all multiple choice, but the class sizes are huge.
i took this class thinking i was interrested in a com major..i have deffinitely been turned away from that. I have never failed a class in college, i have attended every lecture of his and still have an F in his class. i went to him for help and he was a complete ass! i left crying...he does not care about his students nor their effort he is a mean
Though the content is pretty interesting, this class is a little ridiculous due to being a 100 level course. He is not very clear on what he wants and relies on his UAs to help you(rather than personally answering questions). Lectures tend to feel long especially when he OVER talks about 1 topic for 20 minutes. Not my favorite
Horrible teacher. Turned me away from Communications and actually caused me to change my major. Very rude to students and doesn't give them the time of day when they would like a question answered. Thinks he is better than everyone. The tests are impossible and there is way too much work required for this course, it being just a 100 level class.
He made me cry too...
This class was literally painful for me. It is required for COM majors and because of him I will not be entering the field of my choice any longer. His tests are impossible unless you devote your entire life to this class and he is absolutely not helpful. If you are not required to take this class, do NOT take it.
Overall he's a pretty good teacher. The class isn't hard but the exams are difficult. You need to study your notes extensively. Write down everything he says, do all of the reading and take notes on it. Always attend class!
Becker is a great teacher that literally tells you everything you need to know to do well in his class. The review questions in the back of the book and going to every lecture are essential to doing well in his class. Most of the exams are pretty difficult- you must write down everything he says in the lectures and listen to his advice for an A
Great teacher. Really into the topic. Expects a lot of the students but is clear on what it takes to do well. Not for students looking to get by with an easy A or B.
the worst teacher i have ever had made me cry.
Great teacher! If you're looking for an easy A, this would not be the class for you. The professor is clearly into what he is teaching, which makes it enjoyable for the students. He relates the material to modern everyday life. LOVE THIS CLASS!
Just a bad teacher. You have 200 pages of reading and 30 pages of good class notes and the test will consist of 50 questions and 11 of them are questions from a clip showed in class??? He gives a great study guide, but MAYBE 15% of what is on it is on the test. For a 100 level class, it should be MUCH easier than it is. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS
Probably one of the hardest classes I've taken so far. The exams were very difficult and there was way too much reading. Go to every class.
Dr. Becker is a GREAT professor! Anyone who is rating him poorly is afraid of some hard work. The class is difficult if you don't read, but DON'T READ THE WHOLE CHAPTER, JUST DO THE REVIEW QUESTIONS as long as you go to lecture and can put examples with what you're learning. He explains everything perfectly clearly, take him if you can!!
Dr. Becker's class requires hard work and good attendance, but it is a very interesting class. He is very knowledgeable on the subject, and he is very helpful in his office hours (so go to them!) Read the book too - it's actually good and very helpful. He puts Qs on the exams from lecture that aren't in the book as well as Qs about videos from clas
Good teacher, really knows his stuff. Pay attention in lecture and do the assignments he asks and you'll be your A.
He is a great teacher who understands that students struggle with the concepts. If you ask questions that show you are interested, he is very helpful. People make the workload harder than it actually is. As long as you understand the concepts and their relation to each other, there's no need to write anything for the textbook questions.
Overall he is a good professor. The material is straightforward and as long as you go to lecture you'll get it. The media diary assignments can be annoying but he is very detailed with them so you know what needs to be in them.
He gives an outline of the class notes for every class. You need to go into greater detail than just the simple highlights on the outline. Also, you MUST read the book or you will do poorly on the exams. 60% of the material on the tests he never covers in class. Also, make sure you complete the diary assignments it is a large portion of the grade.
WORST TEACHER EVER! He is very arrogant, rude, and condescending. He isn't interested in helping students, whether it's about his class or even the professional world. He was a PR professional and grades you as if you are a PR professional as well, not a student.
Best teacher at miami. I have so much respect for him. He makes rules and sticks to them. No confusion and no exceptions. AMAZING
difficult grader
Honestly one of the hardest entry level courses for Communication majors. They try to weed out students who can't really handle a heavy work load. Crazy amount of notes taken in class along with weekly diary assignments. Grading is pretty hard and tests are average of 67% Most people will have to take this class, just keep on top of it. Not easy.
The best teacher Ive had at Miami, but he is hard. He has rules, he sticks to them, and if you follow those rules you can succeed. He is so passionate about what he does and will do anything to help you. Lecture is really interesting and you can tell he knows what he's talking about. I got a B only because I wasn't ready for how much he used book
Favorite teacher so far. Very organized, and offers a lot of extra credit and review sessions for midterm/final exam.
One of my favorite classes taken in college. When I first came into the class I truly thought it was going to be a super hard course, but as long as you study and take the time to go over the readings, you will get an A! DO ALL OF THE READINGS. However, only focus on the vocab and the review questions at the end of every chapter!
Cannot think of a worse teacher for an intro-level course of a major. Rude, doesn't care what anyone thinks, He holds grades over a students head as if it gives him some sort of power. Office hours are useless, he won't help you, and the exams are impossible unless you can read the textbook (which is long) every single day. DO NOT TAKE HIM.
Becker is very particular and tells you his expectations up front. You won't pull off an A if you don't read the textbook (which isn't that dry), come to class and take notes, and study. I was super scared for the midterm and ended up pulling off a 95% because he warned us and lectured us so much about studying. Take advantage of his extra credit!
This class is super interesting. It is in a bigger class setting and although attendance isnt taken, its ESSENTIAL to go to class. Gives plenty of extra credit options. He engages well with the class for a lecture. There are UA's and you break into small group (GO TO UA MEETINGS) The journal entries are important to do well on. Not hard to do well.
Dr. Becker was a tough professor, he expects you to act like an adult and a student. You can't take his class off and you have to pay attention, but I thought he taught very well, very thoroughly and I was prepared for every exam. I liked him and I liked the class. No complaints at all, I recommend that you take him.
Dr. Becker is very boring and opinionated. His tests are almost impossible, but the journal entries help maintain a decent grade. Must attend class, and take great notes because he will test you on things that he doesn't even act like is important. Must do all the readings, which there are a lot of.
Dr. Becker is an excellent teacher. completely clear in his lectures and expectations. work hard, keep up with reading, study what he tells you to, and you'll be fine. It is very important to come to class AND read the textbook because he includes material from from both that aren't from the other. the class is extremely fascinating & worth taking!
Dr. Becker is very anal. He has strict requirements for every assignment, but the good thing is he makes those requirements clear. Was a tough grader and attendance and the book are absolutely essential to pass. Obviously loves what he does and was very nice but just tough and picky. Also the course was super interesting.
People think this class is really hard and the tests are impossible. If you do the reading, study really hard, and take good notes in class an A is completely possible. I finished with a 102% in the class, clearly it's possible you just have to be dedicated to it. Great professor, loves what he does and you can tell he is passionate about it.
Becker is not very friendly. While his assignments are very clear-cut and he is very specific on his expectations, the exams are still really hard. He does not seem interested in helping his students outside of class. His lectures are pretty interesting as he includes different videos to go along with the lessons.
This class was one of my favorites freshman year. Very interesting and EXTREMELY organized. Becker tells you exactly what will be graded and and what will be on tests. He tells half of the test is in lecture and not the book, but half is the other way around and this is exactly the case. If you don't miss and you read the book, you will do great.
Assignments aren't clear. Never takes time to talk to students, lets TA handle everything.
Becker has really interesting lectures and their enjoyable to sit through because he's so passionate about the topics he teaches - really interesting course I would highly recommend.
Dr. Becker is one of the most anal professors at Miami. His lectures have nothing to do with the book, but the exams are half lecture half book, so you have to read A LOT! His lectures are very long, and most of the time his power-points are hard to follow. This was a pretty tough class, you have to study a lot to do well in this class.
Dr. Becker is one of my favorite professors at Miami. Yeah, its a pretty difficult class and he's very anal about assignments, but he tells you literally exactly what he expects and lays it out for you how to get a good grade. Both going to lecture and reading the book is crucial, but his passion about the topic makes this class actually awesome.
He is very clear in the beginning what it takes to do well in the class. If you do the work, it will pay off.
Lectures are really interesting but the exams and the media diary entries are so unreasonable. If don't do everything he wants down the the t, you won't pass, which creates a lot of anxiety for students. There's also a tremendous amount of reading and you won't pass the exams unless you read everything because he throws questions that are so random
Required course for Strat Comm majors, changed my major for the hatred of the class. Becker is strict and very anal, his way or the highway no matter how much work and effort you put in. Tests are hard and very broad, gives lots of essay type homework, once a week, not there for students, has TAs do everything, changes office hours all the time.
The class is overwhelming at first with the strict guidelines, but the assignments are so simple and easy to get an A there needs to be some type of work done by the student. Exams are straight forward, require a lot of memorizing. Great teacher but a little cold, does not make the effort to get to know the class.
I didn't care for Becker's personality which as the class was lecture based seemed to be injected into everything we learned. His strict grading rules didn't really make sense as it didn't follow AP or Chicago or any other style. Also not entirely sure what I was supposed to learn, I have no idea what media and culture is or why it's even a major.
I think Dr. Becker is helpful. I went to his office hour for learning tips. Most of the context he talk in class is really important to exams, and for reading the textbook, you don't have to read all the context, but just clearly know about the key terms. Also, treasure the extra credit opportunities. They are useful for final grade.
Dr. Becker is amazing! He makes his lectures extremely interesting. He tells you exactly what he expects from you and if you turn that in, you will get a good grade. You must put in a lot of time to study, but you will get out what you put in. This class is very interesting and the assignments are interesting to complete. Highly recommend!
His lectures are very long and has a lot of information. You have to read the textbook and do all the homework. Attending class, doing the review questions and meeting your UAs on Sunday is key to passing this class. He is a tough grader, he is very strict about grading. If you are going to take this class with becker you better be ready to study.
This class requires a ton of reading, but if you complete the readings and pay attention in class it is easy to do well especially with the extra credit.
He is strict about little things when turning in diaries but, he's one of the most fair prof's I've had. The course isn't easy but everything he provides for you is going to help you. Attendance isn't mandatory but it is if you want to pass and do well. And take notes!!!!! Extra credit, take advantage. You get out of it EXACTLY what you put into it
Terrible professor. If you don't read, then you aren't going to pass. If you don't attend class, then you won't pass. The exams are the hardest exams you will ever take. His lectures are good but if you don't pay attention and you miss one detail, then that is a missed question on the exam. The homework isn't too bad though so that is a plus.
A professors who thinks his class is the only one you're taking. Lectures are very important but are only half of the exams as the book is the other half. Exam questions on lecture info are very specific, you could go to class and take perfect notes but if you cant remember tiny details about the lecture weeks later, you're out of luck.
If you an international student don't take this class for your 1st year. Exams are really hard, they are based 30/70 (book/lectures) and specified on details so there will be 5 answers to choose from and 3 of them will look correct so it is hard to get the right answer. Although media diaries give you a chance to boost your grade + do extra credits
Dr. Becker is a great professor. He gives you everything you need to succeed, it is simply up to you if you want to learn it. This class will be easier for organized people and those who are willing to read the textbook and attend class. About an 1-2 hours of homework every week, plus an hour of textbook reading every other week. I do recommend.
Great Class - Exams require being there for every lecture and reading the textbook - Fair grading
This class is required for strat com majors and the material is interesting to learn but tests are difficult. To get an A or B in the class you have to read the textbook and take good lecture notes. Wasn't a fan of this class.
At the beginning of the class he clearly states everything needed in order to do well in the class. It sounds hard/intimidating at first, but it's really not once you get the hang of it. If you take solid lecture notes, complete testable review questions before each test, and take the extra credit opportunities you will succeed.
This class had a lot of interesting material but requires that you go to class and read the book in order to be successful. The lectures were often super boring to sit through which led to it being hard to stay awake. Seriously way too many kids fell asleep during this class. I would get up and go to the bathroom so I wouldn't fall asleep.
I absolutely love his class! My fav class, not bad for those who are beginning to get interested in Mass Media! But if you want a great grade you cannot skip a single class. And that the lecture has little to do with textbook material but the tests has a lot of those so get ready to read A LOT. But it's easy if you're interested! Highly recommended
Dr. Becker is a unique character. He is VERY passionate about this subject which is cool. Honestly, if this class wasn't so lecture heavy I would probably enjoy it more. Sometimes it is hard to stay awake in this class. Media diaries are a good way to boost your grade so do all of those.
Dr. Becker tries really hard to intimidate you at the start of the semester. If you attend every lecture and put serious effort into studying, you'll get an A. It's not as hard as he makes it seem.
Dr. Becker is for the taste of a few students. He is passionate about the subject matter and can come off as a pushover sometimes, but his class is very enjoyable and the material is super interesting. You need to show up to lecture because material on the test is only talked about in lecture.
Do anything you can to avoid taking a class with him. Incredibly Type-A, anal-retentive, condescending, and couldn't care less about your success in the class. He'll give you material to review for exams and make it the complete opposite of what he tells you. In addition, he the most monotone lecturer with no way to make the content interesting.
This class was definitely not easy. Becker is exceptionally strict and type-A when it comes to assignments. He does care about your success. If you are struggling, go talk to him and he will probably help you out. While the class is demanding and hard, if you read the book, show up to lectures, and do all of the work it isnt really that bad.
Becker is tough grader & is very specific with details but it's doable no problem. MAC 143 is definitely harder than most Miami Plan classes, but I absolutely loved it and learned so much from it that it was 100% worth the extra work. Professor Becker has such a passion for the topics discussed & he really wants to share his knowledge w/ the class.
Professor Becker is a very passionate professor. Many people struggle in his class, and I think it's because he wants everything done in a very specific way so that his job is easier. His lectures are very interesting and engaging, and as long as you do what he recommends when studying, you'll pass. This class requires you to follow directions.
if youre looking for an easy A, like i was, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. becker is ridiculously nit picky on the stupidest mistakes for assignments, also you have to do a ton of work for literally like 4 points, its so annoying. also calls students out in the middle of class for mis-using technology. by far my least favorite professor ive had. 0/10
He's a great person. However, he grades very strict. If you're used to getting 100% on papers, you'll be disappointed because at the beginning he says that he purposely only gives like 5 people 100s. The material is interesting but the length of his lectures will make you fall asleep. If you reach out to him outside of class, he's very helpful.
Extremely nice guy and super passionate about media. He gives a 10 and expects a 10 in return. 2 attendance policies to choose from (Choose the mandatory one that gives extra credit, you won't pass without attending, might as well be awarded for it). 40% of test material comes from textbook stuff not covered in lecture. Easy if you put in work.
MAC 143 is a phenomenal class that teaches you about culture from music to marketing. Becker, however, is a tough grader for no reason. While I enjoyed the class and understood the majority of the material, I never got 100% on my bigger papers even after following the instructions to a T. On average, the highest grade he gives is 85%.
He's a nice guy, it's just his class is so damn tedious. The culture in the class room just feels very police-heavy, doesn't feel like a place where you can just breathe and be a kid. Lots of textbook reading which is fine, but the lectures are an absolute snoozefest. Unless you need the class for credit don't waste your time.
Dr. Becker is the best professor I have had at Miami thus far. His lectures are very engaging and his grading criteria is very clear. Media Diary Entries are the main assignments; they're interesting, but usually time-consuming. To do well on exams you have to take good notes, both in text and lecture. He made the course content very interesting!
I thought he was one of the worst professors I have ever had. His lectures were very boring. He gives out tons of homework and he is very particular on grading. To meet all the criteria for an assignment you would get a B on the assignment and had to go "above and beyond" to get an A. I also had his class during Corona which sucked being online.
Very long online lecture videos. Makes you work for your grade and is a very tough grader, I wouldn't recommend for a Gen Ed class unless the topic interests you, otherwise it'll be difficult to keep up with the workload. Rarely gives out 100% on assignments but there were so many extra credit opportunities that I still got an A
Dr. Becker was one of the best teachers I've had. He does a great job at explaining things. The class is pretty difficult and in depth, but our exams were open note, so as long as you took good notes, you'll be fine. Make sure to take good notes!!! I've learned so many valuable things that will help me in my future career.
dont know why i chose to take this class. it was torture.
Strict on assignments but all you need to do is follow the instructions and youll get a good grade. Reading the chapters and paying attention is important. Need to really know the material to do good on exams. I was intimidated at first but it ended up being a fair class. He gives lots of extra credit opportunities so take advantage!
Teacher is bad and maybe because its such a big class but he grades so bad.
Attendance is mandatory and youre screwed if you miss a day. Egotistical and arrogant, thinks youre only taking his class. Has UAs monitoring you and will call you out to leave in front of everyone. Tests are hard, be sure to do the reading. You can follow his instructions word for word and still not get an A. Not sure why he got into higher ed.
Professor Becker is a really good professor. There is quite a bit of homework, but it's very easy to get the. points as long as you read the rubric carefully. Would definitely take a course with him in the future.
Dropped this class after the second week. The workload seemed excessive for an intro level class and you could only get an A on assignments by going above his expectations (whatever that means). Just didn't seem worth my time or effort. Wouldn't take this class unless you need it for your major.
not caring, not willing to work with you, will not help you if you ask. Terrible at communicating.
Every exam is 30 min for 30 questions. Unable to go back and check answers. The exams are basically testing our test taking skills and not actually our knowledge. If you arent good at taking tests then you will not do good.
The average grade for the exams is a low D/F. You cannot receive a 100% on any assignments unless you really go above and beyond but that's rare. He will let you know that no one will do well in his class. His lectures are painfully boring but you need good notes for the exams. Exams are 30 questions in 30 minutes ... which is messed up. AKA MJF105
This teacher makes the class impossible to take. You are not allowed to use any technology whatsoever, unless you are taking notes. If you get caught on your phone, on Miami Canvas, or anything other than your notes, the UA will publicly call you out and you will be kicked out. Ironically, the class "Intro to Media and Culture" is about technology.
Professor Becker is definitely the worst professor I've had at Miami University. He makes it seems like he cares so much about student's grades, but then expects you to succeed on a 30 question 30 min exam. The lectures are painful to sit through. He also has an entire cult watching everyone in lecture like a hawk so don't tab out to canvas!
Ronald Becker is not good. My 4 point assignment due last night had a prompt of over 500 words. For 4 points!! His grading is so specific and narrow, if you don't write a paper exactly how he likes he'll mark off points. Not to mention the grading system itself is bullshit. On papers, you get either a 20, 18, 15, 12 or 0. Have fun! FML
Lots of tasks. The ratings are harsh. low inclusivity. It's not worth doing a 6-point homework for a 3-point course.
Awful. Dr. Becker has UAs patrolling the room, calling out students if they do anything other than take notes. I understand that this is a classroom, but there are instances when I HAVE to do something else. Horrible rubrics. Even open-note tests are difficult. So much work for a stupid class.
This class is definitely what you make it. If you can go to class ( nearly every class) and take notes and focus then you are in the clear. Every exam is very lecture notes heavy along with vocabulary from the textbook. I did not read the textbook but I did study the vocabulary from the textbook and I received an A+.
Very picky grader, would not take unless required for your major.
do not take this unless it is required. he is the hardest grader ive ever had here and takes his class way too seriously and expects you to spend many hours doing work for it every week
He makes this class way harder than needed be. There are way too many assignments due but that isn't even the problem, it's how nitpicky he is with the grading. If you have a normal course load I highly recommend against taking this class or at-least getting Dr.Becker
He is a tough grader and you will absolutely have to attend lectures. Also make sure to keep up with textbook readings outside of class. He gives plenty of chances for extra credit so make sure to take advantage of that. If you are not in MAC or strat comm do not take this class. It will not be worth it.
If you don't have to take this, don't. Becker prides himself on students failing & makes that clear from day 1. Exams are 30 questions in 30 minutes, most homework assignments are 3 points but require hours to do. He is incredibly specific and doesn't care if you do well. He thinks the world of himself. This class was too much work for a 100 level.
The course content is interesting (mostly revolves around history of TV, film, music, etc). However, Dr. Becker is one of my least favorite professors. He has TAs whose entire job is to stand behind you and make sure you're not on your phone. Assignments are overly complicated and harshly graded. It's hard to get a good grade in this class.
Dr. Becker can be genuine on his own, but this whole course is too much... he prides himself on his work (including the textbook we use in his class), but work is very time-consuming for less than 5 points, and overall a super stressful class. This course could be something super interesting... sadly work overwhelms the experience as a whole.
He's honestly just a bad professor. You can't use ANY technology unless you're taking notes, he will kick you out of class. I did like the small groups because they're way less intense then lecture. The two papers you write are pretty easy. The exams are 30 questions in 30 minutes then he expects you to sit through an hour lecture after that.
Do not ever take this class especially with this professor, unless you want a 100 level course to be one of your hardest classes for no reason. I took this class because it seemed interesting and I need the credit. Within the first couple weeks I had to switch to credit/ no credit.
Very bad professor. He will call you out by name during lecture if you were to even glance at your phone. Gives only 30 minutes for exams and expects you to sit through a full lecture after. Takes it way too seriously for a 100 level class, DROP ASAP!
Don't let bad reviews scare you! I took this class and received an A+. It's an easy course if you're willing to put in the time. I never read chapters assigned for homework, I only wrote down the key terms and definitions. All exams are open note and the worst one is dropped. Attend every lecture and take good notes. He offers lots of extra credit!
Takes himself really way too seriously (zero sense of humor) and uses UAs to police computer use, but the content itself wasn't that hard. If you take good notes it isn't hard to get an A.
Drop. Just drop. Be ready to have a horrible time in this class. Not only is Becker a tough grader, he uses his UAs to police the class room to basically call students out. Sent my course rude emails as well. NOT worth it at all. Wish i never took
Professor Becker makes this class a million times harder than it needs to be. He rants for what seems like hours even though he claims that only 30% of test material comes from lectures. I wouldn't be taking this class if it weren't required for my major. Stay away if you're thinking about taking this for Miami plan. His ego is gigantic.
I am interested in the material but Professor Becker makes me lowkey hate the subject. The exams are very hard (30Q in 30 minutes). They are open note though but good luck with the time constraint. Take advantage of any extra credit he gives (there is a good amount) and take advantage of the small groups. Attendance isn't mandatory but GO!
This class is definitely challenging. You cannot just cruise through if you want a B or higher. However, you can get C's and even a D on the exams and still get an A (like me). I got 2 Cs and one D on the exams and passed with an A- because of all the extra credit he assigned. If you go to lectures, and take organized notes, you'll be fine.
to hard for 100 level class. never again.
I honestly think he's an excellent professor. That being said, he does take the class and every assignment very seriously. If it weren't for the numerous extra credit opportunities, I wouldn't have ended with as good of a grade. He is a strict grader and the work load is very heavy. As long as you care enough to do well than you probably will.
DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS IF YOU DON'T HAVE TO! Egotistical, rude, and manipulative are a few words I would use to describe Becker. He had his minions take pictures of students who were violating his outrageous tech policy and he put the pics on the board. Exams are 30 questions in 30 min. Insane class for little payoff.
Terrible professor who thinks his 1 level course actually matters. Makes the class way tougher than it has to be. He will ruin your GPA and doesn't care. His tests are open note but that doesn't mean anything. You have 30 minutes to answer 30 questions while flipping through 20 pages of notes. Joke of a class. Thinks he's the man too.
Not only does he have his UA's take pics of kids using technology/post them on his lecture slides the next day, he makes this 100 level class insanely difficult and does not want to see students succeed. Assignments are ridiculous and time-consuming. Bottom line is if I could give this class a 0/5 rating on here, I definitely would.
MJF105 was pretty easy as long as you went to lectures and did the homework. If you want a good grade without putting in effort this isn't the class for you but if you put in the work and take advantage of the opportunities he gives then you will be fine. I really liked the class and Dr. Becker.
As a professor, he isn't great, doesn't really care about his students, and is very full of himself. As a class, really not that bad if you're actually interested in it. Do NOT take as a Miami Plan but if you're strat com or mac it's very worth it. Lots of time consuming assignments for very few points but genuinely interesting subject/class.
The professor is rude and you are not allowed to go on your phone; or any tabs on your computers besides taking notes. He has Ua's walking around and looking at everybodys computers. He grades very hard and gives no extensions if something is turned in late. He is not understanding about late work and his exams are very hard as well.
Dr. Becker is an amazing professor. If you go to the lectures, do the media diaries following guidelines, and do the definitions/bolded terms in the chapters you will be perfectly fine. There are many extra credit opportunities and the tests are open note. Electronics only for notes during lecture but that is purely to help you succeed.
Very lecture heavy, most of them are hard to understand what he is trying to say and what point he is trying to make. You can study for exams but some of the questions on the tests will be questions you've never learned about. You get 31 minutes to answer 30 questions for the exams. Don't recommend unless required.
This class is an easy A if you follow the syllabus. Every question asked on exams is either covered in the textbook, lectures, or both. Assignments are explained in depth. He doesn't give a lot of feedback on them. Material only takes middle school-level comprehension to understand, you just have to do the work. Lots of easy extra credit.
I would suggest NOT taking this for Miami Plan - unless required for major. This course is VERY difficult for a 105! Extremely lecture-heavy, read the textbook, & watch all linked videos (on all exams!) The homework is tedious & time-consuming. There are 5 small group days instead of lecture before exams. There are many extra credit opportunities!
The ego this man has is WILD. This class was like a power trip for him. The nerve to have UAs walk around and 'tattle' on you for using technology that isn't related to the class, and then to included a picture of you using said technology on the following lecture's slides is unaccepted. Don't belittle me because you have issues. \
The worst professor on this campus. He's the type of professor who tortures you with guidelines as long as the bible for assignments as useless as your rugs. He tells you “you MUST do this” for 15 weeks and teaches you nothing. I took credit/no credit and still felt horrible everytime I open his assignments. And I'm not a lazy student. No.
This class is really rewarding if you put the work in. Everything you need is laid out for you, it's just a matter of if you do it. Dr. Becker emphasizes that he wants all of his students to do well but it is crucial that you apply yourself and put the work in, or you will fail. Really really nice guy if you do what he tells you.
He is not a good professor for those who struggle to write down notes. He gives specific assignment guidelines and adds useless requirements that confuse the student. He has a ridiculous phone policy and the TAs are like hawks and are breathing down your neck. If you don't go to every class you are screwed for the exams. You also have 5 exams.
I took this class for my Miami Plan and that was a huge mistake. Ended up being more work than both of my biology classes combined. Lots of reading from the textbook that you must read to do well on the exams. Strict phone policy, UAs stalking you to call ppl out for using technology, LONG and draining lectures, & excessive rules for assignments
The strength it took me every day to walk into class and STAY in class was absurd. There is no reason a 100 level class should be this difficult. He must take joy in complicating the least complicated subject. Lectures require you to listen to every word he says and write it down from memory (the slides won't help you catch something you missed!)
Hey! Do you hate yourself? Then you should take a class with Becker. You will feel like the worst version of yourself every single day. The technology policy made me not want to respect him and the UAs enforcing it makes it worse. He will kick people out of class for just checking their email. Don't take a class with him if you don't have to!!
If you aren't a Communications major and want an EASY Miami Plan credit out of the way, this class isn't for you. It's intensive and you need to go to lectures/study hard if you want to do well. With that being said, he's incredibly knowledgeable about what he teaches and if MAC is your thing, this class sets a great foundation! Go to office hours.
overall an interesting class but he does have a strict phone policy and if one of his UAs catch u, he will kick u out of lecture in front of the class. he thinks there's a certain way to take notes, once he reviewed mine and called them sh*t. i took notes the same way the next time and got a B bc i actually studied. lots of work. he's v belittling
Dr. Becker doesn't deserve the bad rep he gets on here. He's genuinely a good professor and is extremely knowledgeable on the subjects discussed in class. So many opportunities for extra credit if you take notes during lectures and read occasionally it's easy to get an A.
The worst professor I've had at Miami so far. Exams are nearly impossible to do well on. Luckily, I did every single extra credit possible, went to every lecture and small group meeting, and did everything he asked. Even if you do all of this, expect to pull about a 75% on the exams at the best. Also, say goodbye to anything except docs in calss.
Professor Becker is very knowledgeable and passionate about what he teaches and relates the content to your personal life. However, his lectures are filled with content that is all to be considered important with almost no guidance from slides presented in class. You will not survive this class if you miss. Too difficult for just a Miami Plan.
The grading in this class was tough. Most of the time, on papers or writing assignments, he grades only within a certain scale. For example, you could receive a 0, 50, 75, 92, or 100. I felt that this grading scale was unfair. Overall, he was a great professor, but I did not agree with the grading scale for this class.
The reviews on here are misleading. Dr. Becker is a great professor and great guy. If you can follow directions, be respectful, and study you'll be fine. Most of the bad reviews are from people who can't spend more than 5 minutes not scrolling on their phones and who don't apply themselves in class.
Bottom line, it's a very lecture heavy class with lots of required effort outside of class such as reading and GOOD note taking. He's a good professor who wants you to succeed and will help you. If you put in the effort and the advantage of the extra credit, you'll do fine. Exams are rough but he drops the lowest one and E.C helps in the end.
Don't take this class unless you have to. I'm in a low-level course, but he acts like it's the most important thing I'll ever do. Assigns a lot of busy work. Overcomplicates the simplest of ideas. Spends 20 minutes every class ranting about "your generation can't read," and concluding with, "you should take notes my way." EVERY. SINGLE. CLASS.
Hes very lecture heavy and his lectures are fast paced so you have to really take notes fast.
If your looking for a blow off class don't take it. It's a tough class but if you do what Doctor Becker asks it's well worth it. I took his class freshman year and it was one of my highest grades because I did what he asked. He's an extremely fair professor and your gonna have to put in work to do well. As long as you do whats expected you're good.
Dr. Becker makes a 105 class so much harder then it needs to be. Most of the students taking this course aren't mjf students and don't need this course. Most just take it for credits which is hard to do when your professor is impossible to reach and work with. Dr. Becker grades unreasonably hard. The course feels like it is made for you to fail.
Most of the kids in this class are just there for a Miami plan credit but treats this class like their all majoring in it. Make sure you do take notes every class, don't be on your phone AT ALL, follow his 30 page all instructions with a microscope, and you might just get an okay grade.
Do not take this class if you want a bad GPA. He is a very hard grader, I do not recommend this class on my worse enemy.
Do not expect a blowoff class. Despite coming off as a little much, Dr. Becker absolutely has your best interest in mind. If you follow the assignment instructions he lays out closely and put in solid effort you will do well on assignments. Good notes and reading are highly suggested to do well on exams. Offers tons of valuable extra credit.
Don't take as Miami Plan unless genuinely interested in the topic. LOTS of work but not complicated work. Easy to succeed if you pay attention in class and actually read the textbook. He offers a lot of extra credit I recommend taking. Very clear and intelligent lecturer but with a bit of an ego. Easy content just a ton of it. No phones AT ALL.
We have so much textbook material for a really boring class, you'll be studying for this classes exams way more than you should for a class like this, the homework is long and he takes himself too seriously.
Don't take this class expecting an easy A. It's a Miami Plan course, but it requires real effort. Do all the extra credit—seriously, it helps a lot. Dr. Becker cares about the material, and you'll learn a lot, but the class isn't a brush-over. Just be ready to actually put in the work.
Grades too harsh. Acts like this is a major class (its a 100 level cmon). Do not take if you want to work your ahh off.
He acts as if this is the only class you should be taking. Grades horribly- either you get a 0 or a 5, it needs to be perfect or you may as well not do it. For a level 100 course, there is no reason he should be grading this hard. If you are taking for Miami Plan dont. Choose a different one to get your credits. I found it very hard to respect him
One of the worst professors I have ever taken a course in. When I say lazy, I mean LAZY. He will take a good while to grade papers and then give you a lower grade then you deserve, even though you go by his rubric. This class is a joke and he gives out assignments that really don't mean anything for the class. Do not take this class. Please Don't.
Work isn't hard but it's very straight forward and the assignments are always so time consuming and harder to understand then the actual class..
I am in MAC, so this class is interesting to me, but it is a lot of homework and reading. DON'T take it if you aren't interested in the topic. There are plenty of EC opportunities, and he drops your lowest hw grades. VERY strict abt tech use. Exams are open note, but make sure you take good notes on the textbook readings, or you're screwed.
He was not my favorite at all. He is a harsh grader and will not be lenient about anything. I had a family member pass, and he did not give a shit. He told me to get stuff done on time, no exceptions. His TAs grade everything, so he doesn't even do anything. Would never take again.
Lots of busy work and a super busy Canvas page, but he's a wonderful teacher.
This class was my least favorite this semester, he just wasn't my kind of teacher in any way and doesn't care to know who any students are. I like how he asks for student feedback during lectures but overall he was just terrible at talking too fast, harshly grading, and was SO strict about a phone policy every lecture.
Took this class a few semesters ago, and it was unnecessarily difficult. I've done better in harder upper-level courses. Dr. Becker doesn't seem to care about students. Exams are too long for the time given, and he makes you stay for a lecture after. TAs do most grading. Content was interesting, but a better professor would've made it enjoyable.
Seriously the worst class you'll take at Miami. Makes the course 10 times harder than it needs to be. Acts like he's the most important person in the world. The class is useless and he couldn't care less about anyone besides himself.
Terrible professor and will ruin your gpa.
Nothing but busy work.
This was one of the worst classes I ever took. No-phone-policy, Pointless deduction of marks, too strict assignments, no leniency towards student, non-availability outside of class, and I can write a book on the horrors of this class (even though I took it for nearly a one month) Becker gave Dolores Umbridge vibes who cannot see his students happy
