I thought he was funny in class and liked him a lot until I got my final grade. This guy is WAY go-by-the-book. He tends to go off topic and is a bit moody. Class participation is essential. If you are a shy person, be prepared to go chat with him in his office hours, otherwise, he'll give you a poor grade for part. which you'll regret in the end.
Easy class -- test questions were taken directly from in-class notes -- but you learn a lot. Participation is key but even if you don't like talking in class, Bulanda allows for related emails or chats during office hours.
Bulanda's a fun, likable teacher. The tests aren't challenging if you go to class enough times. His grading is fair--he's one of the teachers who will throw out a question if more than half the class misses it. Any assignments are grade boosters. If you're shy, you can participate through office hours or extra credit.
Ron is really detail oriented so he struggled to teach a seminar that is supposed to be more student-based than prof lecturing. He really likes to have a set plan with no changes and can be almost neurotic in some of his requirements (like page numbers in papers...5 is okay but if its more than 5 it has to be an even number..weird stuff like that).
He's a really fun teacher... one of my three favorite teachers I've had at Miami (I'm a junior)... If you go to class, the tests are straight from the notes so you'll do great. You can't miss more than 3 classes anyway or he'll drop you but you won't want to miss cuz he's really fun and makes it interesting :) I'm sad the class is ending!
Best class and teacher of my college career! EVERYONE SHOULD TAKE RON!!!!
Tests are fairly easy. Participation is vital, but you can use blackboard if you are shy. Plenty of opportunity for class discussion. Assignments help pad your grade. Can only miss 2 classes or dropped.
Dr. Bulanda was really easy to understand, and the material for soc was not at all difficult. Tests were always really fair. If you come to class and pay attention this class should be a breeze.
Interestingly enough, for most of the semester, I sung Bulanda's praises. He is amusing and entertaining. However, his exams are HARD, grades you against each other. Very immature-doesn't handle a student disagreeing with him well. Girl in class tried arguing a point once, and he absolutely flipped on her. Too obsessed with quantitative data.
Awesome class! I learned a lot. He is really funny too so it makes the class interesting. Go to class and take notes and you will be fine.
One of the best teachers I have ever had. He has a great sense of humor and mixes that well with his teaching. It is a two hour class but it flies by. I had no interest in this subject and he has made me extremely interested.
Ron is the man. He has great stories, his lectures are very easy to follow, and the tests are very manageable. Be prepared to participate in some way because it's 10% of your grade. Made me interested enough in sociology to declare it my minor. Definitely take this class!
Excellent professor. He is such a sweet person, very helpful, and very encouraging. His lectures are engaging and he does a great job of teaching the material. He really wants to help students do well.
Ron is one of the best professors I've had at Miami. The lectures are actually very interesting, especially if you participate in class (which is necessary for a good grade). His exams are 100% from his lectures and are so straightforward. He is really passionate about his studies and wants all of his students to do well. Highly recommend.
Favorite professor at Miami by far. Makes the material really interesting and is hilarious. Loved going to his class.
He is awesome!! Probably my favorite teacher so far! He is pretty much a sociological genius even though he's kind of socially awkward but that just makes the class hilarious! He's a really funny, nice guy and an AMAZING prof. I have learned SO MUCH in his class and am now thinking of making sociology my minor!
Dr. Bulanda is one of the BEST teachers I have ever had in three years at MU. I switched my thematic seq to take him in the future. Extremely passionate about his field. All I did was go to every class, and review my notes before the exams and received a 98% in the course - the class average was about an 80% so the material is not a cake-walk.
He is a genius. He loves to talk about his daughter and the police beat - which I now read all the time b/c of him! He gives you everything you need to know up front. Participation is mandatory but they are very interesting convos. He has a good sense of humor - its hilarious when he throws a cuss word into normal speech!Highly recommended .
did not like the way his grading system was set up and how his class was run (main reason for doing so bad) exams are fairly easy and so was the final, exams are straight from notes. also the material is somewhat interesting
I took Bulanda for his demography class and intro class. Both were very easy. Nice guy!
He is a funny guy but this class was so boring. If you miss class 4 or more times he kicks you out and participation is mandatory. Also, expect 4 question pop quizzes over readings. The exams are pretty easy but a lot of the questions come from the in class lecture so GO TO CLASS!
I did not care for the way in which he teaches. I had a night class with him and although we did have a break he lectured the entire class period ( we got out early a few times). Seeing as the class was two hours and forty minutes it did get extremely boring. Also he does not use power-points or post notes online. No laptop or phones whatsoever!
Bulanda is AWESOME! Since this was a 6 week summer class, there was a lot of material covered in a short amount of time. There were daily reading reflections and video reflections. Participation is mandatory but if you are shy, he allows you to gain a few points by participating in a discussion forum on niihka, going to office hours or emailing him
Mainly nice, but gets irritated easily. He threw someone out for putting her notebook away fifteen minutes early. Basically, get him to like you, or your time in this class will be miserable. ATTENDANCE IS MANDATORY. If you don't go to class, YOU WILL FAIL. It's just what it is. Go to class everyday, get him to like you, and u should be fine.
Bulanda was ok overall. He talks really fast, takes attendance, and gives out pop quizzes. However, the material is not that difficult to understand. You MUST GO TO CLASS EVERYDAY and PAY ATTENTION if you want to get a good grade. Otherwise, you will definitely fail because the tests and quizzes come from the lectures. You cannot blow this class off
This class was harder then I thought it would be. If you are going to be late do not even come because he will call you out in front of the class sometimes and deduct points off your grade. He talks about how fair of a grader he is but I do not agree because I felt like half of the test questions were meant to trick you and there were pop quizzes
The first day of class this professor told us he was not afraid to fail students. Why a teacher would begin a semester in this way is beyond me. His assignments are confusing and he was extremely irritable the entire semester. Although I received a decent grade, I WOULD NOT suggest taking any of his classes. It's just a major headache to be honest.
kind of a stickler on the rules but his class is great if you want a taste of sociology. Lots of group discussion that will make you think. definitely recommend
Bulanda is awesome. You must go to class, but it is worth it because he is a great teacher and gives you everything you need to know for tests. Participation is mandatory, but he gives you many different ways in which to do so. He seems really scary at first, but he is hands down one of my favorite professors at Miami.
He's a good professor but he goes through the material really fast so it's hard to take notes in class & everything he goes over isn't necessarily in the book so if you miss something & it's not in the book you have to look elsewhere to try & find the information. He doesn't take attendance every day but you have to participate in class or online.
THE BEST AND FUNNIEST TEACHER I HAVE EVER HAD. LOVEEE HIM.
Dr. Bulanda flew through course material and abbreviated words on the board which made note taking very difficult. Worst part about his class were the exams. The multiple choice answers were very unfair with possible solutions being (both a and b, all of the above, none of the above, etc.) I would highly advise taking another professor.
While class is mandatory, Ron is the BEST professor i have ever had. He is insanely funny and keeps class interesting. He is an adorable man and has perfected making class easy- while effectively teaching at the same time. I learned so much from him, but maintained an A :)
HARD! Very tough grader!
Dr. Bulanda is SO funny, class was always so much fun to go to because discussions were interesting and made you think. He explains everything so well, and gives plenty of examples. If you show up for class, take good notes his exams are so easy. He does require you to participate, but if you don't like to talk in class you can post online!
Bulanda is a very cool guy and his classes are long, but very interesting. However, his tests are curveballs. They are very hard cover a lot of material from the book and lectures. I worked so hard in this class and just could not seem to do well on his exams. However, he is willing to give extra credit and help you out if you put in the effort.
Very interesting class, the quizzes were very tough and had trick questions.
Made what is supposed to be an easy, introduction class into a much more complicated class. Tests and some assignments are way too specific, and grading is all or nothing. Great person, really funny in class, but ultimately not an easy teacher.
Bulanda is amazing! Easily the best professor I have had so far. You can tell he really cares about the students and wants them to understand the material. Sociology is such an interesting subject and he doesn't disappoint with mind-blowing facts. Be sure to participate and the exams and quizzes are all multiple choice so easy enough.
Funny guy and classes were actually interesting but I wasnt expecting this class to be so hard. His exams were difficult because of trick questions. EX. You know A is correct but then b is a solid answer THEN C is both A and B. Or hell throw in questions with multiple right answers and tell you to choose the BEST answer.
HE IS THE BEST PROFESSOR IN THE WORLD!! So so funny, which makes it easy to remember the material. So down to earth and easy to talk to in office hours, too. I LOVE THIS MAN AND THINK EVERYONE SHOULD TAKE THIS CLASS IT IS SO INTERESTING AND FUN!!!
Dr. Bulanda makes this course interesting and I looked forward to classes each week. You can tell he knows what he is talking about and really cares that his students are understanding and comprehending the material. If you show up to class and put a good effort into the assignments and exams you will excel in this course.
Ron is a wonderful and compassionate guy that really puts in the effort for his students; he truly does want to see his students succeed both academically and personally. That being said, he has clear expectations for his class and if you don't follow them you will be dropped or failed. He is definitely worth the extra effort though.
If you have the opportunity to have Dr. Bulanda, TAKE IT. His lectures are funny and interesting and make it easy to absorb material. He genuinely cares about his students and wants you to succeed. Participation doesn't rely on speaking in class so everybody has the opportunity to get credit. Can't stress enough how amazing his class is!
This guy sucks. If you are not a verbal learner, he is just not helpful. He honestly is one of the worst professors I have ever had. I took this class because I need it for my major, and it is supposed to be easy, but it is not. I got a higher grade in my physics class than in my SOC class. He makes it harder than it has to be, and is very rude.
Seems very fair and understanding, but his tests/quizzes are cumulative, bizarre, and often are made to trick you. I am heading to medical school next fall and received a lower grade in this introductory course than in some of the most difficult courses offered. Stay away from Bulanda for SOC153, youll be thankful.
Do not under any circumstances take this professor for your intro to sociology class. It will not feel like an intro class and the way he words his exams don't promote critical thinking they make you overthink and stress on the exam. He singlehandedly squashed what interest I had in this field. Avoid at all costs or take at your own risk.
Dr. Bulanda leads lectures well with interesting discussions and add-on videos outside of class. He's honest and cares about what students say. His testing requirements are strict and not ideal, but overall they're easy enough so the fun lectures outweigh the questionable timed quizzes and borderline tricky exam questions. A nice guy to talk to.
Personally, I loved Ron. The material of this class was very interesting, and the amount of work was reasonable. Exams are tough, but he curves a ton so good grades are possible. He can be a bit weird and off-putting in class, but hes really kind and helpful in office hours and is genuinely a nice guy. Overall I'd recommend him.
Not too difficult of a class. Weekly discussion posts and quizzes based off the power points
By far one of the worst professors at Miami, grades were hidden majority of the semester and the grading on all assignments and exams was very confusing and unclear. Exams are very confusing and his timed quizzes make you overthink. Take this class with his wife instead.
Gave me a 0 on a paper that I worked hard on and submitted on time. Was unable to attend my grandmas funeral bc he wouldnt allow me to miss his class. Took 10% off my grade when I was in tears responding to a text from my mom who was at the funeral. Failed what was supposed to be my last class at Miami. Simply thought I wasnt trying.
By far worst Professor Ive had. Gives you 5 minutes for 10 question quizzes , exams are extremely difficult with trick questions, and his TA grades everything for him. Doesnt care about his students . There is no reason to basically fail an introduction to sociology class. Whatever you do take this class with a different prof
He does not care about helping and locks all assignments so you can't look at questions. He gaslights you whenever you ask for assistants. Believes tht the content is easy to learn because he has enough students getting an A on the Exams. The exams are proctored and locked so you can't go back.
Dr. Bulanda is hilarious. Yes, he can be strict at times, but if you simply follow his rules and participate, he will like you. He makes class time extremely interesting by having discussions and giving everyone an opportunity to participate. I genuinely learn a lot from his class, and it's one of my favorites this semester.
By far the worst class I've ever taken. Gives 5 minutes for a 10 question quiz and doesn't even give you time to think. Exams are very hard and confusing and causes you to second guess. Doesn't care about his students. Lectures are hard to follow because he moves so fast. This class shouldn't be hard for an intro class. Do not recommend at all.
He's extremely disorganized and goes off topic at least five times a class period. He was an entire week behind because he just talked about nonsense the first two classes and so he had to rush through the rest of the material. He's disrespectful to students and makes fun of them, thinking he is being funny. Wish I had dropped.
Even though lecture material was interesting, most the material stated in class was not translated to exams. You have 3 exams and you must do well on them to have above a C+ in the class. Almost all the people I knew from the class were in a D-C- range.
At first Bulanda can seem very off-putting, but you get used to him throughout the semester. He's actually a decent guy. Material was easy to understand and interesting so long as you put effort into taking good notes. I barely had to use the textbook. This class should be an easy A if you simply come to class and pay attention.
Although he is a stickler for rules, this class is one of the easiest Ive ever taken. He does give short times on quizzes and exams (ex. 6 minutes for 10 question), but the quizzes are open note and most questions are direct definitions from the book. Exams are based on what he says in class, so have a friend to send you notes if you miss.
do not take this class. he does not care about his student, will make fun of you in front of the whole class, and no matter how hard you work in his class, he always thinks you are lazy or are not trying. the material itself is not hard, but he makes lectures seem unbearable and goes extremely fast. do not recommend him at all
He has strict rules but if you make sure to follow the no technology you're be fine. Attendance is not mandatory but he hints what is important to know during class. Really interesting and easy intro class. Most difficult part was short time limit on quiz but they are open note/if you look over notes before hand you'll be fine. Took for Miami plan.
Ron is the type of professor that needs to grow on you. It's easy to dislike him at the beginning because of how strict he seems, but he really is a sweet guy who cares deeply for the material and his students. Do your best in class and follow his rules, and you'll get a lot out of it. As long as Ron can see you're trying, he'll love you.
Bulanda seems like a tough teacher, but he became one of my favorites. Although I wasn't a huge fan at first, he truly became my favorite professor by the end of the semester. Although attendance isn't mandatory, he does know your face &there can be pop quizzes. He course content was very interesting, and Bulanda keeps you engaged during lectures.
He's a nice guy, his teaching is good but his grading is just so harsh and unfair. I feel like I'm learning but if you don't think the way he does, your grade is tanked. Best of luck if you have him. Insane amount of stress for this intro level class
He definitely means well but he can't remember anyone's name to save his life. He makes you feel bad in class and told me "you are responsible for your lack of academic knowledge". His exams are hard and even if you put 100% into his class you won't end with anything above a B-. Good luck!
At first glance he seems like a harsh professor but everything he does is fair and he genuinely wants you to learn. I don't think I've ever met a professor that cared so much about their students' education as this man. If you do have him, be sure you're genuinely trying your best and you'll be fine in the end. avoid if you're not willing to try.
Best professor I've had. He genuinely cares about your learning experience and cares about your well-being as well. He may seem harsh at times, but he just wants everyone to succeed and try their best. While attendance isn't required, you should go to lectures or you may miss exam content or assignments. His lectures are honestly super engaging.
I've had Bulanda for a few classes. He has a strict attendance and tech policy, but it really is for your benefit. I have never had a professor who cares more about his students and the subject he teaches. This isn't a class you should take for an easy A, but it is a class you should take if you're passionate about Sociology and learning in general.
He goes off topic a lot. Has class discussions that take up a lot of time, allowing everyone to raise their hand and say the same thing 15 different ways. Tricky on exams.
As a first year student, Ron was an amazing professor. His lectures are kind of all over the place, but he tries to stay on topic. I was an undecided major and am looking towards a Sociology major because of him. His exam questions are somewhat tricky, but if you read the text book in depth and pay attention to lectures, you will do fine.
Highly recommend taking a class with Dr. Bulanda! One of my favorite professors at Miami. If you are engaged & put in the work then classes you will do fine. READ THE TEXTBOOK because he gets off-topic in class! Strict cellphone policy & attendance policy got students dropped from the class. Great guy w/ lots of respect & care for students.
Love him, but not as a teacher. For one of my assignments I forgot to turn in a data sheet (he gave us the data) and he took 20% off my grade. Which then dropped my grade by 10%. Absolutely ridiculous. He gives us no chance to get our grades up. He makes exams so hard that he gets anxiety and believes that we will fail it because it is so hard...
I feel like I learned absolutely nothing in this class. He gets so distracted in class that it feels like we barely even talk about course materials. He is a great guy, I honestly love him as a person. I just do not like him as a teacher.
Super hard class and he made exams extremely hard; got a 40% on the first exam. He'll give you an opportunity for extra credit, but if he does not like what you submitted he will either give you no points or subtract points from your grade. How cruel is that?
AVOID TAKING HIM
Truthfully the reason I switched to sociology. Attendance is mandatory but he was the easiest professor to pay attention to. Genuinely learned a lot in this course and it was easy to contribute to conversations.
I loved his class and still talk about it. He was an amazing professor and his lectures were engaging and kept the class involved. He does NOT allow laptops or electronics of any sort, but it honestly helped make the class more engaging. He is very funny and personable recommend all of his classes and would take his class again.
We are far too grown for him to be stopping class and interrupting the lecture of the rest of his student because one person was looking at their phone for maybe 2 minutes. We are not in high school and they do not need punishment, keep the lectures going for those who really care...
I do not understand the bad reviews. He is genuinely a great professor who cares deeply about his students. He does have strict rules so make sure to follow them. For example, you cannot be on your phone or computer, and if you missmore than like 3 classes you get kicked out of the class. Nonetheless, the class is pretty easy if you read and study.
I am upset about the fairness between the professors who teach this class. He is definitely the hardest intro to sociology professor out of all the others. You really have to put in effort to get a good grade, he goes off topic so much and doesn't get to all the course material, so you're expected to learn the rest outside of class.
Ron's lectures were either very boring or entertaining, depended on the chapter. Discussion posts need to be elaborate. The last multiple choice assignment, he made the questions confusing and answers similar even though I read the article in depth and had it right beside me I was lost. This assignment tanked my grade and cost me the dean's list.
I did not enjoy this class. The lectures are unimportant but you must attend. Doesn't present slides or provide notes of any kind. He is very anal about electronics and seemed biased toward students with accommodations. He got in arguments with students about attendance and grades DURING class. He seems like a good person but not a good teacher.
He is by far the hardest professor out of all of the professors that teach this course. I don't know why it can't be the same throughout these introduction courses. Hard grader and not the most interesting lecturer.
Honestly please ignore the negative reviews. Ron is an amazing professor that genuinely wants you to understand the content he is presenting. He is a difficult professor but if you pay attention in class, take notes, and understand the content more then just on a surface level you should do great.
Genuinely one of the hardest courses I've taken. The discussion posts are vague, the textbook readings are too long, and he is one of the hardest graders I've ever met. He does offer extra credit, but it is extremely difficult to get. The discussions are also worth 30% of your grade.
By far the worst teacher I have ever had in any class of my life. Gets extremely worked up and upset over everything and is a very difficult grader. Would not recommend to anyone and I will never take a class with him again. Beware it was brutal
Before I took this class I was scared because of some of the reviews but he actually is a really nice guy. Sometimes there were pop quizzes but he usually hints about them in the previous lecture so you know when they're coming. Make sure to read the textbook if you want to do good on the tests.
Dr. Bulanda cares very deeply about SOC which is evident however he gets "worked up" at least once a class. Now these episodes include students checking their phones to which he will stop lecture to ask why they did that. If you mumble during lecture, or do anything he doesn't like of he will call you out. Essays cant have fluff, and other rules.
he is a very knowledgeable and nice professor. His lectures are very entertaining and engaging. As long as you actually study, participate, and don't cheat, then you will get a pretty decent grade in his class! and he truly cares about his students, so don't hesitate to ask him questions, he is very approachable.
Ron Bulanda was the worst teacher I've had, wasting class time on irrelevant stories, constantly freaking out on students for essentially no reason (leaning back in your chair can get you yelled at), and enforcing super strict, unfair rules. His disorganized teaching and harsh grading made the class unbearable. Save yourself don't take this class.
He dropped me from the course when I was hospitalized and had a note from doctors and the dean of students, causing me to get a W on my transcript. Tests purposefully tried to trick you. Called me out in class for going to the bathroom after I was finished with independent work. I liked him until he frequently made fun of students, avoid taking him
Dr. Bulanda has a few strict rules (do not be late, do not use technology unless you have accommodations, and he hates cheating) but if none of those things bother you he is a great professor. I thought the content was super interesting, and he wrote the tests and assignments in a way that was approachable and practiced critical thinking.
horrible professor. such a hard grader for a basic soc class. will make fun of students and a poor girl dropped the class because he kepy making fun of her and her opinion.
Puts things on exams that weren't included in the study guide. Insane attendance policy, and insane technology policy. very old school. confusing instructions on assignments.
This is the worst class I have ever taken at Miami. With the worst professor, the grading criteria being unclear, being emotionally insecure when people receive low scores. He talked about me during his therapy session and cried with a student in office hours: concerning, unclear, impossible to improve. Two groups got an A+while ours got a C.
Gives chances in class for students to share their thoughts and takes everything deeply into consideration. Do not even TRY to cheat or use AI, don't use technology, and don't miss over 3 classes or else you're dropped. If you do not take notes, do his reviews, and study before exams you will most likely end up with a poor grade though.
Holds students to extremely high academic standards because he genuinely cares for authentic learning. His exams are difficult but extremely doable if you actively attend class and read the textbook. He is strict with course policies so plan to attend every class and don't even think about using AI/ cheating. Favorite professor at Miami.
There is an attendance policy-you only get to skip three classes before being dropped, and no technology is allowed. Still, honestly, one of the best professors I have had really cares about his students' learning, and his lectures are exciting. Being forced to take notes on paper only also helped me really learn the material thoroughly.
