He's one of the few professors at the school that I actually respect. He's a great teacher, gives wonderful lectures, and his love of literature is absolutly contagious.
Funny guy with a "realist" perspective on life. If you enjoy abstract lectures that cover many diffent subjects and also teach you about life you will like him. Expect him to mention sex and religon(he doesn't bash it) multiple times.
His class ends up being a study in his own life...very boring. His ego insists that we care about his life. The class teaches little about English. He must have tenure.
His sarcasm can be scathing. Girls are apt to fall in love with him, which feeds his ego even more. Watch out.
Deeter is so smart. He will motivate you to continue to study literature. He gives you new ideas and make you really think about what you are reading.

He is really stange and insecure. He courses are all about him and his trials in his life. I feel like he might have given me a better grade if I had gone to his office and flirted with him which is really unsettling. The class just ended up being a disappointment.
This class had a ton of material. It is worthwhile and if you take it seriously it will change you. Deeter himself is married. He is not attractive (balding and stout). I dont know who these females are that fall for him, but I havent. He is well read, good at listening and takes teaching seriously.
You may think because I took 960 I may not know this teacher very well, but he is very good at teaching. I appreciate the passion that he puts into his classes. His personal life is actually like my own, and I can relate very well. He is an awesome teacher, and he has tought me more than I could have ever learned on my own.

Great professor I thought - helpful and merciful. Responds well to chatting and flattering which I enjoy cause I like to get to know my professors.
Great professor. He makes you think and the discussions in class are amazing.
I really enjoyed his class and learned a lot. He was the the first teacher I had in college and made me want to come back and learn. I think he did try to look up me skirt once(so I was told) but never hit on me. I love his point of view on things, and he cares about topics that matter (poverty, education, the earth, government etc...) I highly recommend taking his class if you can handle a different point of view besides conservative Mormon.
He does a great job on making sure that you get what he is teaching, and he gets you to want to learn and to come to class again. as long as you can handle a little different view on life and the world (not uptight mormon view), you will love his class. and yes girls for some reason love him.
Deeter is an odd one. He said that he isn't good in his personal life but that when he reads Shakespeare, he IS Shakespeare - what? He is known for flirting with female students and although he does read well, he doesn't seem to apply anything he has learned from reading to his life. He has a lot of advice for students.
He made me think outside of the box! If he weren't my english teacher, I'd take him! Though I did have him! I was one of the lucky ones! He is an awesome professor! He cared for his students! I don't know what to say, except for well done! Thanks for everything! You da bomb!
took this class online, and he was the least helpful person I have ever met. He never returned my e-mails
LOL... brilliant performer, brilliant teacher, son-of-a-**** perv. He plays favorits and hardball, but if you're up for the ride and you pay attention, he can be inspiring and insightful. He WILL alienate 95% of Mormon Ogden to the pure and utter delight of us 5%. Good guy, though, tragically a litte distant. He's worth a class.
His lectures are about anything ecept the subject at hand. I pray I do not have to take him again for any other class. I know many people enjoy his classes, but I would rather have a root canal. If you don't like him the first day, drop him fast. And by the way, he offends plenty of liberals, too; it's not a conservative Mormon thing.
Intelligent, leinient, and thorough. He reads your work and personally responds to it.
His classes are all about him. He is incoherent, pedantic, and insulting toward women. He is the worst instructor I've ever had. He does read and respond to papers, but he is also boring and self-absorbed. As I understand it from other students, he can teach a class one semester and be excellent, then teach the same class and be worthless.
Very intelligent man and a wonderful professor. He may offend those with delicate sensibilities but it you're that sensitive maybe college isn't the place for you anyhow.
I took his class online over the summer and halfway through the semester he pretty much quit grading out papers and disappeared. who knows if he even read anything we submitted. flake!!
A life changing professor. This guy will change your outloook on the world for sure. I agree that he must offend alot of people but he usually speaks the truth. Seek him out for any english class.
I took his Shakespeare class. It was amazing. I see the world differently now. Even though he doesn't check attendance, his lectures are the only reason to take the class.
Avoid this teacher at all cost. The worst I have ever had. I dreaded going to class. Although the class was easy, it was extrememly boring...complete waste of time. He goes over class time everytime. The subjects he brings up have nothing to do with English and are usually sexual in nature. Plus the reading material is downright macarbre.
He is an awesome professor. I have always loved reading and writing, but he made me want to teach it! I changed my major becuase of him! Love him!
I took his Intro to Fiction class online. Overall it was an excellent class, I learned a lot from it. He doesn't expect you to do tons of homework, he is very fair and gives you adequate time to complete assignments. If you ask a question he will help you, and gives excellent feedback on assignments. Though it takes forever for him to grade work.
Did not enjoy and consider myself someone savvy with English. I didn't learn anything in this class and was forced to read some of the most tedious material. Lectures are 95% off topic. Papers are not handed back timely. Clarity of assignments is VERY BAD (but I like structure). Would never take a class from this guy again. Gets sexual in his topic
This teacher changes the way you will look at the world. All those who say he is offensive, pedantic, boring, insulting towards women, or overly sexual have missed something special and need to grow up a little bit. His lectures will you show the world in every different shade of light uncensored. Take his class you will be a better person for it.
He is the worst teacher that I have ever had. He is very unorganized , throughout the semester he never handed out a syllabus, and made assignments up as we went along. I have only heard him diss America since the class first started. I never heard one good thing about America from him. Its like he hates his country. I think he is depressing.
COMPLETE waste of time, still not sure what the Shakespeare plays we read are about. Always off topic, mostly sexual in nature, many times very offensive. Compares himself to sexual gods in clss. Likes to hear himself talk. Seems to have repressed issues he's not dealing well with that seep randomly into discussions. Completely ridiculous class!
Took Philo in Lit this semester. He talks nonstop for 3.5 hours. Very hard to follow sometimes, but we only had 1 assignment all semester long. I can handle that. He does have a hard time staying on target. He'll start a bulleted list and never leave the first bullet. His chalkboard is a jumbled mess that's impossible to follow, give up taking note
I'm not sure what to say about this class. I'm still thinking about what he talked about. I may always think about the things he said. So in my mind, that's a good class. How many other classes can you say you've never stopped thinking about?
He does not give you a syllabus or tells you what your grade is during the semester. No feed back at all from this proff.
Amazing. This guys knows his****. Yes, a lot of students struggle with how he manages his classes b/c he wants you to learn not cater to a syllabus. He chooses beautiful pieces of literature and asks his students to think out of the box, which is rare at Weber. I would reccomend him for dedicated students of literature.
A very interesting class. He loves talking but not necessarily about the books we read. He was pretty easy, I was just always a little confused about what I was supposed to be doing. I got an A though. You only write essays and I think he respects different points of view
In the grand scheme of awesome English professors at Weber, I would put this guy at the very top. I am sure he pisses people off but he knows his stuff. If you go to him with questions he will talk to you for hours about your opinion or even your interests. I reccomend him for any class you can take.
He is a wonderful professor. His lectures are all encompassing. He can see multiple sides to any piece of literature, and he argues for many diffent sides. He is a genius. I've taken many classes from him and will continue to take more until I graduate.
You'll either love him or hate him. If you're the type who likes to think out of the box and listening to multiple views etc. you'll like him. However, if you like to get down to business with clear organization and planning you probably won't. He will grade you more, uh abstractly based on how much character you show in your work/class.
I had a big problem with this teacher. I recieved no feed back for my papers. I attended every class he held. I compleated all the work. He did not show up for class three out of four times. HORRIBLE TEACHER! If you want to learn anything about writing a paper I would not take Deeter.
I found his class to be interesting. He did give some digs toward America and Mormons, which were buggin, but he is intelligent and seems to have a passion for the books. If I needed to take another class I would probably take it from him.
Took this class online. Very easy class, however, received absolutely no feedback on my assignments. Didn't even grade my essays until after everything was due, and then just gave me a grade. Didn't even finish grading all my assignments. No tests, just assignments on books. Slow email replies.
Super-helpful. Knows his business and loves getting his students interested. His teaching is a little unorthodox but when you consider the literature he'd be ridiculous to teach conservative views.
I think Professor Deeter is brilliant. Class was never boring! Although, he doesn't give ANY feedback during the semester, this class is easy to get an A in...just do the assignments.
I took his intro to fictions class online and I loved it! One of the best classes I have ever taken by far. It was really easy and you learned alot. Just make sure to read the books. I will definitely take another one of his classes and recommend him to everyone! AMAZING teacher. I really respect him. :]
Professor Deeter is an exceptional teacher. Lectures are designed to both help students understand the text and to encourage critical/independent thought. Attend, Listen, and open your mind to the world of literature he's begging to show you. Freshmen: take this class asap. -He will change your college experience and perhaps your major.
Deeter is an amazingly thorough and knowledgeable instructor. He know his material inside and out. He is helpful and willing to go out of his way for students who show any amount of interest. He will change the way you view literature and the world around you, but you must be open-minded or your time will be completely wasted. Definite plus!!!!!!
Online class is easy but the teacher is terrible. Nothing is graded throughout the course and there isn't any feedback given so you have no idea how you're doing and you have no way of improving. I have emailed him several times with questions and haven't gotten any emails in return. He ignores you. Easy class but pointless with no feedback given.
This class is extremely easy! you write five papers and he only grades two. However, you have to listen to him and he is NUTS! He is absolutely bipolar and incomprehesible. If you need to take Shakespeare like I did, take it from someone else. He is literally insane!!!!
I really liked him as my professor! He is really funny. He likes to talk, but most of his lectures are really interesting and had flexible due dates if you asked him to work with you. Very understanding on your papers (there are 4 in his introduction to fiction class)and I over all did very well in his class.
Best teacher i have had so far at Weber. Hes hilarious, if your not really sure about English hes perfect. Hes so helpful and will honestly do anything for you to help you get the grade you need. Go to class and do all the work and your set with an A. I highly recommend him.
I wish I could download his brain! He's so smart about human nature.
Going to class is hilarious! He's sometimes hard to understand because he has so many ideas he's trying to get out at one time. The class was easy though... show up and write a couple papers. And he grades pretty easily.
Deeter is VERY brilliant. You can tell he cares deeply for Shakespeares works. He has deeply analyzed the material and backs it up with mythical references. He is VERY funny and borderline inappropriate (but hey that kept my attention). If you're an uptight mormon don't take this class. If you are open minded and gleeful- do.
Took Deeter's Shakespeare and Advanced Fiction writing class, and I would never take another class like those from anyone else. He is so passionate and knowledgeable about the subject that you can't help but stay engaged. The only reason attendance would be mandatory is because he goes into so much depth that it changes a person's outlook. GREAT!
Deeter really enjoys his books. I didn't really care for the subject matterial. alot of sex violence and murder in required reading. 10 25pt. 1-2 page assignments. 2 100pt. formal papers 1000 words. 50 points for not being late with assignments. Class did its job
I took this online. Easy class, grades fairly, I never got below a 24/25. HEAVY reading and writing. Assignments due every week to every other week. If you don't mind reading and writing, this class is for you. Responds to emails, and has an obvious passion for literature.
I took a Shakespeare class from Professor Deeter, Conversations were all over the place, but at the same time they were very interesting, and he did well tying them up into the course material. Only had to write a few easy papers. Very enjoyable class.
This guy is insane. It seems his only purpose in teaching was to sexually harass and embarrass the freshmen. He doesn't teach a single thing about English. It's all about torture and any other disturbing stories he can dig up. If anyone's considering this guy's class, get out now.
Awesome Class. Awesome professor, one of my favorite at Weber State being at school for almost 4 years now. There were never any tests. There were just A LOT of pages to read on an every week basis (about 150) per week. Loves what he does, very knowledgable. There's one giant paper due at the end (8 pages) to write on Anna Karenina. LOVED IT!!
very knowledgable. made the class very interesting. books were interesting as well. he gets to know the students. easy work. good books. he makes you think outside the box. I would take another class from him in a heartbeat. loved him.
Wow, what an acid trip. Great guy, loves to talk and doesn't seem to notice or mind if everyone is asleep, he'll just keep right on going. I took an intro to fiction class and four of the five books were biographies, the man is a bit of a loon. That said, his class was cake. Take him online to avoid long rambling lectures that don't matter.
This teacher is ridiculous. I HATED his class. He rambles about the dumbest things that have nothing to do with English... I wouldn't take from him ever again. The only thing I liked about him was that he was easy and had no tests. Seriously, he's a joke. He once talked about men getting laser hair removal all over their body. English? I think not.
This professor really is a joke. It was probably the easiest college class I've ever taken but also the most worthless. He rambles for the whole class, if you object to what he says he just patronizes you. He monologues about nothing for the whole class period so there's no reason to take notes. Not a hard class, but also not worth your time.
This professor has an interesting way of teaching. It is not your average English class. He makes you think outside the box and explore topics you normally wouldn't. He brings psychology into play quite a bit. Lots of class discussions and only a few papers to write. Easy grader. Overall I loved the class and professor.
He is extremely passionate about literature. The class may seem like a never-ending monologue, but he actually explores the purpose of literature and experience he himself has with it. It is my favorite class, he's such a great guy.
He was really easy. He didn't require much and he gave good grades on papers as long as you did them. He loved to hear himself talk. He didn't really respond to class participation, he would just talk over people. He just wanted to tell you all of his ideas and opinions and would make you stay late, so that he could tell you irrelevant rantings.
This class is worthless. If you can take another one, please do. His class as nothing to do with English as he told us that he didn't care about any grammar. He rambles on the entire lecture, and never gets to any point. He asks rhetorical questions every five seconds, and expects you to answer. His homework is fairly difficult.
Awesome professor!! Very intelligent...if you want a class that makes you think, this is it, but if you want to sit and have things explained to you like your a total dummy, go get a regular english class.
Great teacher. Teaches about things that are actually relevant in everyday life. His class isn't like a regular English class instead it's a class used to make you think differently. He is a little weird but I liked him a lot.
I really liked this teacher. He was nice and gave everyone a good grade if they tried and did the assignments. He was such a nice guy.
Professor Deeter is the best college professor that I've EVER had. I still go sit in on his lectures when I have free time. He is brilliant and I can't believe some of the myopic views that some of these reviews have. He is a genius and a wonderful man. I can honestly say that I love him and that he is my mentor and friend.
This class was an absolute WASTE of my time! The man taught me NOTHING about Creative Writing that my Jr. High classes hadn't covered. On top of that, he rambled on about things that had NO meaning to our class. We didn't keep on schedule and I feel lucky I finished the class. If I had more space to write about why his class was a failure I would.
I always hated English, after taking a class with Deeter, I fell in love with English. I learned so much from this man, he will challenge your mind, and most likey he will offend you in one way or another. It's his way, oh and he will smile while he's doing it and so will you. Best college professor I have ever had.
This man-what-may be smart. It's just the way he-what-the way he talks that makes me-what-makes me really-what-irritated. I find it hard to-what-to learn about anything when I'm-what-trying not to-what-shoot myself in the face because I'm-what-I'm so aggravated that he-what-that he can't finish his-what-finish his sentences. You follow me on that?
There is no structure and he gives no feedback so you feel lost the whole course. He does talk about sex and his own work. (Not very good) He will talk about one tiny detail for the whole class. He says What 600 times a class, and he hits his hip constantly. He has favorites, those who laugh at his jokes. If you can avoid him. Boring, useless.
Fantastic teacher! he is very smart, you wont understand everything he says. but it is all very interesting. if you try you will get an A! I took him for intro to fiction also, if you do the reading and write his occasional paper you will get an A. he is super nice and very understanding. i definitely recommend him.
Incredible professor. You may get lost in his lectures, but he challenges narrow-minded views and teaches students to expand their way of thinking. Best class I've ever taken and well worth your time.
I loved taking Intro to Writing Short Fiction from Deeter. He's incredible. I was skeptical going in to it, but he was brilliant and I felt changed after the first day of class. I would recommend for sure and would definite take another of his classes in a heart beat! He brought us together and really pulled out what we had to give, amazing stories
The lectures were interesting. Sometimes they were all over the place. Sometimes I would zone out, snap back and be completely baffled about how he had gotten on a particular subject in a Short Fiction class. Overall, he's a great guy. He will gush over the work of attractive female students, but I don't hold that against him.
I am in awe of this man. He is so passionate about literature. I love listening to his lectures and he is the main inspiration for me to be an English major. I have taken 3 classes with him and I have thoroughly enjoyed each and every one. I look forward to his class every day.
He is a great guy. If you're doing this for a GenEd credit, it's easy. If you want to learn how to write, go somewhere else. He is obsessed with talking about the economy so that's all we did the whole semester. The text books are economic books. I learned nothing about writing, but the teacher is a great guy and interesting to listen to.
Deeter is very hard to listen to. He gets so side tracked during class that he expects you to stay after so he can finish talking about nonsense. We only had to write 3 papers so there was not much work. He made us buy two economic novels that I could not sell back at the end of the semester. He basically thinks he's teaching an economics class.
I hade him for creative writing. Very uninteresting. The most boring class I've ever taken. He didn't teach one thing about creative writing. Didn't make any writing assignments clear. super easy, not worth it though.
Most students did not like the class because they did not like the subject. Just remember 2010 is a research writing class and you'll do great. He is not worried about content as long as it's done correctly. He may get sidetracked but it is all good info. This is one smart man. Learn from him.
The teacher possibly has a tic which can be distracting at first. Assignments aren't hard. The teacher does not teach in a linear fashion and can be hard to follow at first but hang in there. He is interdisciplinary and is FULL of knowledge. This is a diversity class, so keep an open mind.
Professor Deeter is.... interesting. He does not teach like a "normal" straightforward teacher would. He's kind of scattered. But the thing is, his tagents are all about English, and things that are of help! It took me a while to get used to his teaching methods, but once I did, I loved this class. Quite easy. No tests. Just writing papers.
This amazing man has made my writing career possible. I never would have thought my writing was good enough, but he worked with me outside of classes to edit my work. While some think he rambles, all of it connects together if you think the same way as him. If you desire anything less than sheer brilliancy and encouragement don't take his class.
At the beginning of the semester I hated this class. His lectures are all over the place. However, by the end of the semester, I enjoyed it. Every student should experience such an unorthodox learning environment even if it frustrates you. If you show up and listen to his lectures you'll get a good grade. Easy A.
Mr. Deeter blends pscychology and philosophy with his lecture, which made it much more interesting to me. He challenged me to write my best, not by being overly tough, but by introducing interesting, new concepts and then incorporating them into assignments. Great in-depth instructor. Also, is HILARIOUS.
I wasn't so sure about him at first, but once you get used to his tangential lecture style, he becomes pretty fun albeit a tad quirky. The semester was focused around researching and writing two main papers, along with developing a notebook. I was late with my final and he didn't ding me. He's a reasonable guy.
Loved to talk about himself, instead of the subject.
Dr. Deeter is truly awesome! He teaches at a very high level though, so if you can’t listen closely, are biased, or are otherwise unable to think deeply then you will hate him; but whose fault is that? Not his! He taught me more about how to see and conceive deep story lines than any other professor so far. Would absolutely take him again!
Prof. Deeter rocks. I'm not a fan of English and yet it was my easiest class this whole semester. He never taught much English just talked about his infinite knowledge of politics and whatever he thought would be fun to talk about. Easy A if you play along.
He wants to teach you how to think like a writer, which is great if you're an English major or something but I am not. We only talked about this genocide that happened in the Congo. It's more a class about that than English and you write all your papers on that. He just talks all period about random things and then gives you an assignment.
Deep thinker
Rambled, never actually taught the subject, gave low grades when he disagreed with the topic.
Deeter's way of teaching is unique, he makes you think, how novel for a University teacher? I asked why we studied difficult stories? He answered, many young minds had not had life experiences that were difficult and traumatic, his idea was that the quality of compassion is introduced when you experience or are introduced to hard things.
