very interesting class, based on discussion about readings
Great class, based on discussions. Lots of reading though.
at first course seemed dull - all business and economic-ish, but the readings are really good - if your into the anti corporate conspiracy thing - and prof really gives good lectures.
interesting class and he gives really good lectures. there's a good amount of reading but a lot of the stuff from the reading and lectures intersect.i made sure to take a class from him for next semester
excellent instructor, covered interesting material regarding television, very professional, good learning environment, wants students to do well, lengthy paper to conclude the course (20-25pgs), good overall course in department
Class is extremely boring. I felt like sleeping everyday. The readings are very boring also. You have to read or you will not do well on the tests. If you pay attention a little and read a lot you'll do OK. Tests are not that difficult. If you can get past the bordem you'll do OK.
this guy is one of my fav teachers, he genuinely wants his students to do well, all his notes are on slides so no guess as what to write down, his review sheets are basically the test, except the tests are easier, just memorize the review. he never takes attendence but class was enjoyable to go
He is the best! very understanding and actually likes what he does. One of my favs at suny. He really knows what he is talking about and teaches the class not depending on the TA. he Rocks!!!!!!!!!!
HE is semi boring. Hes a good teacher though. Helpful when needed. uses the book a lot. is willing to help out and improve your grade. Uses blackboard but overall I disliked the class. And test are not the easiest but if you kno the study guide, hopefully you will do fine.
brilliant guy, interesting class. the terminology used in the readings and on his slides was a little intense but as soon as he explained it and gave an example, it made perfect sense. one of my favorite classes because there was no homework whatsoever, course grade depended on 3 tests. study hard and do the reading, you'll be fine.
Nice guy. Gives extra credit for coming to class and about 4 pop quizzes that are easy if you do the readings. He throws a nice curve on most of the tests. He puts the notes online also so even if you dont go to class you can still find the review sheets and notes online.
LOVE THIS CLASS AND THIS GUY! He uses Prezi which is so cool and he makes class so interesting. It sucks though... I love the class and study but am not doing well :( I failed the first test...I think his tests are too hard for an intro class...You should really take it anyway though bcz he is a very good prof and he teaches the material very well
This class is cake.
Not required to show up to class. If you pay attention in class you don't need to read, if you fully understand the reading you don't need to go to class.
Really great teacher, he tells you exactly whats going to be on the test all you have to do is remember it. 4 tests, not cumulative, even for the final, and he offers extra credit
LOVE THIS MAN, this class is a joke, i barely go to class, he puts all of his slides online so if u just study those you'll be fine. Once you learn how is tests work its cake. He is extremely nice and put videos in his presentations. 4tests and he tells u EXACTLY to a t what u need to know, and 4 quizzes u take on a reading online and extra credit!
Class is pretty easy, can be interesting at times, and he is a pretty good teacher. The tests are a joke to start with and he makes you lowest grade count even less. You can get up to 6 points extra credit very easily and an A starts at a 90. So around an 82 test average can get you an A.
Easy Class.
Shows great interest in both the subject and his students. Works around your schedule to make sure you understand material and allows you to take tests at a different time, if needed....allows students to take final earlier :)
He takes what could be a very interesting class and makes it extremely boring. I quickly realized that the only reason to show up for class is the extra credit he occasionally gives. In order to do well on his tests, you have to read the book.
I have to say this class was very easy. He posts many of his prezis online, and while this means going to class would be silly, he actually is very thorough in his class explanations and will map out how he wants to you answer questions on his exams. There are 4, with written parts. I did so well on the first few that I needn't take the last one.
Great Introduction to Sociology class. He ends lectures 20 minutes early. 3 tests that are not cumulative. Online hw assignments for each chapter which are impossible to not get 100 on. Five of the assignments count as extra credit. His tests are not bad either. Highly recommend.
One of the best professors I've had. Great lectures that aren't too long, he usually cuts class 15 minutes short. Extremely clear and concise. Tests aren't bad if you go over the review sheet. Uses McGraw Hill Connect assignments but they are extremely easy. If you do more than whats required you get extra credit. Great professor and nice overall.
BEST SOCIOLOGY PROFESSOR EVER ! ATTENDANCE NOT NECESSARY ! HW IS VERY EASY AND SO ARE THE TESTS. TESTS ARE BASED ON LECTURES SO STUDY THEM. HE GIVES REVIEW SHEETS AS WELL. OUR FINAL EXAM WAS FROM 1 PM - 3 PM, I FINISHED AT 1:30, WHAT DOES THAT TELL YOU !!
Wonderful professor, can be boring at times but you really get the sense that he truly cares that you learn the material rather than just get a good grade, however he gives you every opportunity to do so. I would recommend his class to anyone looking to take a simpler class to space out your day. Great Guy, Easy class, what more do you need?
He put up all his notes online, which is super helpful because it's impossible for me to focus in lecture halls. Just seriously study his notes, skim the articles he gives you, and you'll pass no problem.
Great guy who knows what he's talking about. Exams are straightforward and simple if you take notes, read the text, and do the study guide he gives out. Book isn't necessary but will help you for exams. Really cool guy. Material is a bit boring but a nice class to have if you want to relax.
He is such a great guy. Five 3 question pop quizzes (and he usually gives you the answer to one of the questions) and 3 short/long essay tests (he gives you the questions on the test beforehand). Wants his students to do well. Boring material but great professor!
The first professor I've ever had that actually does very little to help prepare you for exams. The guy makes the course convoluted and uninteresting. The course syllabus has changed twice since the beginning of the semester. He always comes in late and ends class early, I think he does it intentionally. He also ignores people who raise their hand.
Gives pop quizzes based upon the readings on the syllabus, you better read the textbook or online readings to be ready! The class is straight forward, but if you're not ready to be bombarded with names and definitions you'll have a hard time absorbing then take my advice and DO NOT enroll. He did curve the first exam, which was an unexpected bonus.
Jacobs keeps the lectures to 70 minutes and lets us out early. The tests are fair and he reviews before. All the prezis are put on blackboard if you don't go to class, but the font is tiny so you have to sit in the first couple rows.
He uses prezi and he gives us a review sheet of what is on every test. The tests are so easy and literally take like 30 minutes MAX. You only need the textbook because of the online homework with it. You could probably get skip class a few times and still get an A. Doesn't use iClicker.
What a treat! As a junior studying accounting in the business school, this was my last gen ed requirement. It was nice that I didn't have to always go to lecture and I could concentrate on my core classes. When I did go to lecture he kept it interesting. Do the learnsmart hw, go to the reviews and use the textbook to study basic definitions. Easy A
Attendance is not mandatory I barely showed up but still passed. He gives online assignments which are basically impossible to get anything less than 100. He gives study guides and posts his lectures on blackboard. He does give extra credit and his tests are not that hard. The course is mostly common sense
Easy Class. Don't need to buy the physical textbook as long as you have the Ebook. The course content is practically common sense, so no need to worry.
Okay so his class lectures can get boring. But the main key to this class is the homework & his review sessions he holds before the test. Literally gives you an outline of every topic on the test & reviews the concepts. There is homework but you're only required to do 10 and the rest are extra credit. And the homewrk is automatic 100% every time
Easy and interesting class! unlimited tries on homework and the tests are exactly like the homework. Highly recommend !!! Attendance isn't mandatory but he makes the material understandable from examples of videos and such.
GREATEST professor I've had. Extremely easy course mostly based on common sense. Would 10/10 retake a class with this professor. He made it extremely easy to get an A by giving homeworks you cannot get less than a 100 on plus extra credit ones. 4 very straightforward easy tests. Posts lectures online and gives a word for word review for the tests.
I took this class because I thought it would be a broad overview of sociology, since it is an intro class. However, the readings every week are his own textbook, which hasn't been published yet, and 55 pages each chapter. The book is extremely detailed and irrelevant. Lectures are dry. TA who grades homework is extremely harsh - grades spelling...
TSOC 115. He has a textbook of his own and he didn't publish it yet so it's a little weird to read a book that's sort of a rough draft but all you have to do in this class is read the textbook and answer the review questions. If you can keep up the due dates, you will be fine. He's not strict and his lectures can get really boring.
Ronald is a good teacher and knows what he is talking about. I would recommend taking him over other professors. The test are not hard, he passes out a study guide for each one, as well as for the final. The HW are so easy you will get a 100 every time. Really is a good professor
For those in the Honors College, this is your best option if you are looking to satisfy your Sociology requirement. No exams, an average of an hour a week dedicated to work outside the classroom, and he gives feedback on the two major assignments that aren't due until the end of finals week. I don't know a student that weren't happy in this class.
Great class, he wants everyone to do good in this course. Tests are basically common sense and the only way you would fail is if you don't have common sense.
He gives a lot of homework, all easy A's. If you do all of the homework you get extra credit as well, so even if you don't do amazing on tests you will do fine in the class. His lectures weren't super exciting but they were easy to follow so I appreciated that.
He is super nice and lenient but in a good way. If you have any problems with homework or weren't able to do it on time, he gives you extra time. He understands that you have other stuff and homework to do. He's very chill. I had him for Honors Intro to Sociology and he had his own textbook coming out. His textbook is also easy to understand.
really nice guy. a decent amount of work, but very doable
Went to class every once in a while and still got an A just make sure you stay on top of the homework
If you take this class you are guaranteed an A if you do all of your homework and study his review sheets on blackboard. You dont have to go to every lecture its really long and boring sometimes and its not mandatory
3 Tests which are easy to study for if you take notes. He is a good professor who wants you to do well. Attendance is not vital, but you should show up to his review session the class before the test to get a better understanding of what will be on the exam.
His class is easy. he gives study guides before tests, however I wouldn't recommend relying solely on those because there are some things that do get left off the study guide. His test are straightforward though so if you have common sense, do the hw, and come to class you'll do fine. he also gives extra credit
Easiest class Ive ever taken. Go to review right before the test and youll get an A. Also do the extra credit. Textbook not needed.
cool lectures if you wanna go, gives a study guide before the test just know all the stuff on that and youre fine. do the homeworks and use the text book to study for tests its really interesting and helps a lot
Taking Dr. Jacobs for Intro to Soc is probably the easiest way to take this class. 15 homeworks, only have to do 10, other 5 are extra credit. Three exams, each worth 25% of your grade (Hw is last 25%). Easy A. Going to class is not mandatory, either, and doesn't even really help you. Everything is in the textbook, which he wrote.
Best Sociology professor. Gives tons of extra credits and the review sheet before the exams have all the questions that will be on exams. He is very caring and wants to make his class as easy as possible. I highly recommand you to take him.
If you never show up to his class, all you have to do is just read his textbook (yes, HIS textbook... its required for the class) the homework is pretty easy, everything is in the textbook and the tests arent hard at all, if youre doing the h.w. Plus, he gives extra credit!
Dr. Jacobs is very personable. I took ASOC115 during COVID as asynchronous, and it wasn't bad at all. 15 homeworks, only have to do 10, other 5 are extra credit. Three exams, each worth 23% of your grade Easy A. Going to class is not mandatory, either. Everything is out of his textbook.
Took online asynchronously; high school levels of easy. Gives review sheets before tests, and the homeworks are plentiful but super easy. Just watch his lectures or even just skim through the chapters and pass the class (worked for me) Easy class, chill professor, would take again
Use the textbook for the homework and you get a 100, tests are pretty fair. Lectures can be long. Easy A though. Gives a good amount of extra credit too.
I love this professor, the class had weekly quizzes from the lecture and reading and 3 papers. He wrote his own textbook which is pretty cool. I read it, but I don't feel like you need to to pass. It was a really great class, I really enjoyed it. He's the best.
Professor Jacobs has weekly quizzes where you can find the answers in the textbook he wrote. He takes the best 10 out of 13 so you have wiggle room if you missed a few. His tests are relatively hard considering he sometimes focuses on one chart or infographic out dozens across multiple chapters. He does have multiple opportunities for extra credit.
One of the easiest classes youll take. Lectures arent necessary as long as you read the textbook. Although he does give a lot of homework, all his homework/quizzes/exams/lectures are based off his book which makes it an easy class. Plus, he gives a second chance on all his homeworks to improve your score. And he records all his lectures!
This is the hardest class I have ever taken. You will have to memorize his book to your heart. Plus, all his lectures are pretty much useless as he doesn't explain things clearly. Moreover, on the exam and quizzes, he asks some crazy questions such as random statistics. The second attempt on quizzes are so hard I never get higher than the first one
Avoid this professor "in person." unless you like memorizing every aspect of his book. He literally makes this class more difficult than a 300 level course.
Prof Jacobs is good. The homework assignments and tests are straightforward. Take him if you can.
This class was not too bad. I read the textbook and took notes in order to do decent. I got 80s and finished the class well. I started not going, if you read the textbook and take notes, going to class is not something you need to do! Just do all the homework and all the attempts. Very little extra credit (only 5 points on overall grade).
Read the textbook!!! The exams are harder than you think. Other than that the homework was easy and he gives extra credit
3 exams. Homework is a 20 question test one a week. You get to take the homework twice (the higher grade will count). There are 16 homeworks. The 10 with the highest score count as you homework grade. Any extra homeworks count as extra credit. Each exam is worth 25% the homework is 25%. Buy the online text W/ subscription thing. It has study tools.
If you put in effort, the class is generally easy. The lectures can get boring so it's important to do your own reading in the textbook to do well on tests even though he will cover it in class. There is one homework assignment roughly every week and usually took no more than 30 minutes. I found the content pretty interesting most of the time too
Prof. Jacobs gives lots of extra credit and wants his students to do well. Attendance is not required. Textbook is very useful and since he wrote it, it matches up with the tests very well. Lectures are also recorded and uploaded to blackboard. You have two attempts for homeworks which is generally easy. I would take again!
Best professor I've ever had. He constantly takes feedback and adjusts to the students desires. The whole lecture center listens and takes notes because he is just so engaging. Homework once a week that is easy, skim the textbook, he prepares you well for tests, attendance measured on campus knot so can do from your room in a pinch. Amazing.
Not sure why this guy has so many positive reviews. I found his class to be extremely misinformative and like my mindset and viewpoints were trying to be changed. Extremely boring lectures and exams were challenging/did not make sense. Do not take this class.
Cool dude. Very kind, and approachable, and formats class very well. Good lecture slides that he posts after class, he takes zoom recordings of the classes and posts them, so attendance isn't required. 3 tests plus some easy HW on BlackBoard. The tests are super easy questions. He can come off a little bland sometimes, but very kind overall. 10/10
Prof. Jacobs is a good teacher, he comes in and does his job and we leave. He's very clear of his expectations and he also applies our feedback. This class isn't a struggle if you read the textbook, and do the homework.
As long as you show up for class and take notes you are fine. Just be careful with the homeworks because they are very specific to the textbook. Make sure you have the right textbook, I got one on amazon and it looked the same but didn't have all the chapters.
Easy class as long as you show up. He takes student feedback and is kind enough to accept late work.
He offers extra credit every time you go to class. The tests are a bit hard but even if you don't get good grades on them the homework and extra credit will make up for it. Each homework and lecture is based on reading from the textbook so don't wait until the last minute to buy it.
Your grade is determined by the number of points you earn, so make sure that you do all the homework assignments and the discussion questions for the honours discussion section (since one point of that is equivalent to one point on an exam). The class is pretty straightforward so put in the work and you'll do well.

Discussion posts once per week (2 posts per week on same board) totaling to like 30 minutes of work per week. 16 total quizzes, all online, 20 questions, all multiple choice. The quizzes are all due at the end of the semester and are generally super easy. Lots of resources for information if what you learn about that week is interesting to you.
EASY A. He grades by points and 400+ points=A+ which is easy to achieve bc he offers over 500. He does attendance with a code, its 1-2 points each day but u could hypothetically skip class and get codes from a friend. He does quizzes 1x a week online 1 group project and a 2nd one that is optional but both are easy. Lectures r boring sometimes tbh.
this is easiest intro sociology class ever. he grades by points and 400 points= A, which is easy to achieve bc he offers over 500. there is one quiz (open book, directly from textbook, online) per week, one group project, extra credit, and one final (online, open note) and attendance isn't mandatory but gives you extra points.
The easiest class you will ever take!!!
He was also the author of the textbook we used for class, so the material from the lectures was all exactly from the textbook. I thought the lectures were interesting. He had in-class participation activities that were always really easy and on the computer. Tests were always online; everything was optional.
Professor Jacobs was a good professor, the material that was covered was exactly what we read in the textbook, but he explained it more in depth. Weekly textbook readings with reading quizzes, optional final, and a group project which wasn't bad and there is one extra credit opportunity as well.
The class was a snooze fest. It was boring and he forces you to buy a textbook... which is a book he wrote himself. i regret buying it, you don't even need it to pass his class. Simply complete the quiz he gives at the end of each lecture to ensure participation, and you'll be fine.
He clearly identifies what we will be tested on so as long as you show up to class and earn your points, you will be on track for an A.
The class wasn't the worst. Lots of reading and lots of just lecturing. I felt that he didn't explain things that much more in depth than the textbook but definitely have to go to class to get the points for in class engagement activities and sometimes an elaboration on a topic.
For a genEd course, Professor Jacobs made it very easy to understand the material and pass the class. The grading system is structed so that students earn points rather than lose them making an A more achievable goal. All of the lectures are recorded and online for students who may not be able to make it. Overall, great course professor and course.
