Professor Johnson is probably the coolest guy on campus! He is very funny and made history interesting. He is so encouraging and energetic in class that I can't wait to attend everyday. The class is hard but he tells you exactly what to expect on the test.
Dr. Johnson is absolutely the BEST professor I've ever had. He makes learning the most boring of subjects entertaining. He wants all of his students to do well so he tells you exactly what he expects from you and on the tests. The class is hard but if you go to class I can guarantee that you will learn something everyday. He's awesome.
Hard. Dont take. Tests are Essay. Gives you 3 questions and only puts one on exam.
Very hard and demanding. Johnson needs to understand that everyone is not a historian. He probably should not teach undergrads. He can ruin your GPA. My grade did not reflect my effort.
Dr. Johnson is absolutely the best professor I've ever had. Yes, this is a hard course, which you should know before taking it, but he definitely makes it worth your time. I've never liked history, but Dr. Johnson made it interesting for me. He wants you to succeed and cares about his students. If you go to class and work hard, you can do well.
Dr. Johnson has been my favorite professor so far! I had the most trouble with this class, but I was able to pull off a B because he is such an inspiring and helpful teacher. SI sessions, going to each lecture and a lot of studying make a huge difference. The essay tests are challenging, but not too difficult.
GREAT person! He makes everyone feel comfortable and really wants you to get to know him. His class was extrememly challenging though! He only teaches grad students now which makes complete sense. Make sure you come to class and read through your notes way before the essay exams. GO TO THE SI SESSIONS!
he is an extremely nice guy, and wants all of his students to feel like they are important, worth while people. however, if you do not take notes over every single little thing he says, then you will struggle in his class. he is always willing to help out though, so if you do fall behind, go to his office hours.
Johnson was awesome. It's a hard class, but from what i've heard every history class at Tstate is hard. If you have to take history, take it with johnson. he's very understanding, smart, and inspiring. he makes you want to do well on his tests.
I love this guy! He isn't teaching the second class until next year, I'm waiting.
Only 2 tests, If you fail the first exam you;ll basically fail the class. It'd be more convenient to use a tape recorder and record his lectures because you WILL need to know every single thing he says word for word for the exam.
He is amazing!!! History at texas state is one of the hardest classes you will take and this is the professor you want! its writing intensive but he will help you and the SI sessions are golden! He is always excited and you can tell he loves teaching history.
Not everyone is a highly educated historian like him. This is a survey course. He gives zero margin for error. His teacher assistants are the absolute worst part of the course
A quality professor. He is not easy, but this is college, none of it should be "easy". He treats his students like adults. His grading is fair and reflects a proper grading curve before grade "inflation". If you want a rubber stamp A then I'd go elsewhere. If you want to actually learn some history and some critical thinking, then he's tops.
One of the most wonderful Professors I've ever had. His class is a little difficult, but he makes it worth it. You can tell he not only genuinely cares, but loves what he does. Definitely recommend him to everyone who has to take this class.
Johnson is so helpful. Show up if he holds a review session. He makes a difficult subject fun and easy to understand! Never requires you to know dates. You'll have to put in the effort for your grade but as long as he sees you participate he will help you out.
LOVED THIS CLASS! I hate History & failed Hist1320. I got a B in his class! Three exams with multiple choice and long essay. & two reading exams with multiple choice, short & long essay. Didn't attend class much or go to SI sessions, & I did really good in the class & I'm not interested in history & pretty bad at it. TAKE HIMM! Theres EXTRA CREDIT
He was absolutely awesome! He does expect you to listen in class and take notes. He gives you an outline of what will be on each test. I do NOT prefer history but he completely changed my mind. The first day he was very intimidating and I almost dropped the class. Thankfully I stayed! I would take him again!
If you see no issue with blindly following a strong personality, this professor is tolerable. If you have ever had a thought of your own, however, run for the hills now.
Best professor at Texas State hands down.
He is a great professor. Really enjoyed him. Very energetic. Although he doesnt make you go to class it is important to do so. You also take quit a bit of notes.
This was the best class I've ever taken at Texas State. Professor Johnson is truly an amazing teacher! The tests are all essay based, but that's a departmental thing. He gives you all the tools you need to be successful. His attendance isn't mandatory, but go to class if you want to make an A. TAKE HIS CLASS!!!
Dr. Johnson is the best Professor I've had at Texas State! He is passionate about history, and gives very interesting lectures. Go to lecture and you won't need the textbook. He does not require you to memorize dates! Tests are essay, but he gives great review sheets covering everything you will need to know. Very helpful! Highly recommended!!!
Without a doubt the best instructor I've had, ever. He really loves what he does and he's good at it, definitely recommend him. As long as you go to class and pay attention you should be fine!
By far, THE BEST teacher i've ever had in my whole life. He is VERY good at his job and he makes going to class every week worthwhile. I wouldn't say this is an easy class but once you understand what he (or his TAs) look for in your essays and you study AHEAD of time, an A is very possible. Dr. Johnson or community college in my opinion.
the finest educator I have ever had...EVER. For all intensive purposes, he saved my life. It is a challenging class. You must go, you must take notes; I do not understand complaints accosiated with this. What are you paying for? He is clear about offic hours and is always eager to help.
Dr. Johnson was one of the best teachers I have had here. He explained things so well and put you in the position as if you were really there in that time in history. I felt like I learned history for the first time because of how well he approached the subjects. Outstanding teacher. I can't say it enough. Tests are challenging but you will learn!
Best professor i have had since being in college. He is very passionate and wants everyone to do well. Go to the review sessions. If you are not a good writer you may have trouble.
He is very passionate about history and it makes it exciting to go to class. He truly cared for us and our success in his class and he let us know this regularly. He is a wonderful and thoughtful man and has definitley become my all time favorite professor.
He is the BEST professor I've ever had! He's so passionate about teaching and so funny! His tests are all essay based and they're challenging but taking him is worth it! Definitely recommend him!
You have to go to class. However, I was an active participator in discussions and still made a low C.
Definitely one of the best professors I have had! He's so passionate about what he teaches and encourages class participation and questions from students. The book is not required but it's on hold at the library if you want to read it. You HAVE to go to class, tests are based exactly off his lectures. Also go to SI Sessions, they really help!
Professor Johnson is AMAZING I literally almost cried in his class one day I love him so much History is my worst subject and he made me want to come and learn His tests are challenging but doable because he encourages you to believe in yourself so much Such an outstanding man that deserves the world and more
Best professor ever! Take his class! The tests are hard, if you want to get an A you have to work. He gives review sheets before tests, use them! Go to the SI sessions, talk to TA's & get to know him! He is a great professor, is so passionate about what he does, & wants you to succeed! He definitely changed my outlook on history and life!
BEST PROFESSOR EVER! His lectures are amazing and he really tries to connect with his students. I almost wish that I failed the class just so I could be in his class again.
He's a good guy and clearly a passionate teacher, but the class was not my favorite. I love history, but he encouraged class discussion in a 300+ person class, and as a result the class was often off-topic or given unclear facts. Arbitrarily counted off on tests. I took another history concurrently with another teacher and much preferred the other
Dr. Johnson is by far the BEST professor I've ever had. He is so passionate about what he teaches and he sincerely wants you to learn. The class itself was challenging at times and the tests were graded hard. As long as you take good notes and use the study guide he gives you, there is no reason to not pass the class.
One of the best history professors I have ever had! So inspiring and he's very accomplished and successful. The class was hard because he wants you to participate vigorously in discussions, which was hard for me. I broke out of my shell because of him and I ended up with an A in the class. I loved this class so much. It was very interesting.
Dr. Johnson is FANTASTIC!! His class is very difficult, but it's only because he wants you to really learn the material instead of just being handed a 30 multiple choice test. They are all essay exams. Two literature based and three lecture based. He is the most passionate teacher I have ever had bc he loves his job. and he is HILARIOUS!
Dr. Johnson is absolutely incredible and I highly recommend him. He is so passionate about History he and is excited to teach us what he knows. It's not an easy class, but it's not super difficult either. You just have to show up to class and that is easy to do when you have an awesome professor. It was an honor to be his student.
Dr. Jonson is by far my favorite professor, he is so passionate about his job and wants nothing more than for you to succeed. Exams are all essays but after the midterm 40 points of them become multiple choice questions. It is a very difficult course but possible if you really work for it. I recommend him out of all the professors at Texas State.
By far, my FAVORITE professor at Texas State. He really wants his students to succeed. His class is hard, but he is fun to hear. He involves the class and makes history seem like it happened yesterday. Take this professor and you will learn a lot. Speak up in class and he will know you, where you sit, etc. Attendance not mandatory but recommended.
Honestly Dr. Johnson is the most amazing professor I've ever had. He is wonderful and inspiring. I've never met a teacher so passionate about what they teach. It is difficult, but it's possible to pull an A if you work really hard. Take his class it'll be one of the best decisions you make.
Amazing. The man inspires debate and conversation in class that open doors. Sack up and take his courses.
Honestly he is the best professor ever! His class is really interesting and I learned so much, I struggled a bit in the beginning but after the first test I got A's on every test . He has amazing extra credit & make sure to talk to the TA's so you know exactly what he wants. I wish I could take him for the second history!!
By far one of my favorite classes at TXST. Johnson does more than enough to make sure his students understand the material. Even though the class is big he goes over and beyond to connect with his students.
Loved this class! I actually wanted to go and I didn't want the lectures to end. He keeps it interesting! The tests are hard though and you have to study a lot
Dr. Johnson was by far my FAVORITE professor. His lectures are anything but boring and he strongly encourages class discussion even with 300+ people. His tests are hard but the TA's know exactly what he's looking for so go to their study sessions they really help! I got C's on the first 2 tests and then A's on the last 2 and final. TAKE HIS CLASS!
Mr. Johnson has made me love going to history class! I thought this class would be the one I would dread going to everyday but I can not wait until it is time to go back. His lectures are always interesting and I actually have learned something about history - not just the usual memorizing facts. Highly recommend!
I had to withdraw from this class. The class average on the first test was a 67. That means that more than 50% percent of the students failed. He is a good speaker but if students can't pass the tests there is an issue. He needs to work on his tests and expectations. If you are a good teacher then students should be passing with good grades.
This class is tough, but life changing. I have never had a better class in my life. Yes, the exams are essays and the grading is harsh, but it is completely worth it. Definitely opened my eyes to how great history can be. He has so much passion in what he is teaching.
He gives you great notes but those are all you will get. He is very picky about how essays are written and tests are hard since you have so many pages of notes to study. You have to have a complete understanding of everything he tells you in order to pass the class. It's writing intensive so if history isn't your thing take history somewhere else.
Professor Johnson has an incredible lecture style that keeps you interested. While attendance isn't mandatory, it's encouraged. I missed a week's worth of class and had an awful time playing catch-up. The IA's and SI's are really helpful as well, I recommend this professor to EVERYONE he's hilarious! Worked really hard, finished with an A.
He really cares about students and his lectures are so entertaining. I have never learned so much about history in my life or had a better history prof. I definitely recommend him but some people think the tests are hard. I made an A in the class... GO TO EVERY LECTURE AND STUDY. Study every ID and possible essay and you will definitely pass
Dr. Johnson made history the most interesting subject as soon as you walk through the door. And he'll tell you that. Grading is tough and reading is essential. I've never liked history but I loved his class. (And theres make up tests without explanation of why you missed it)
Dr. Johnson is one of the best professors I have ever had! He is so smart and passionate and makes it intersting. Tests are kind of difficult (bc they're essay and free response but all history classes are) but if you work hard and study there is no reason to not make at least a B on the test. No textbook but small books to read are ESSENTIAL
I would not say this class was easy. If you don't do the studying for tests and keep up with lectures in class, don't expect to pass. Johnson is fair in his grading. His tests are easy to pass IF you study in advance. I would absolutely recommend anyone take this teacher. Johnson LOVES history, and makes it exciting to learn. TAKE THIS CLASS!
Dr. J is the best professor at Texas State! His lectures are interesting, he is very encouraging and definitely cares about his students. His class is fairly difficult, you have to work for the grade you want. He offers extra credit which definitely helps. Everyone should take Dr. J!
Dr. Johnson pulls your best out of you if you are willing to do the work. Expect to read a book and write a short paper every week. Expect to actively participate in class. Expect his undivided attention when giving feedback or suggestions on how to improve class performance.
He made you buy his book he wrote and do written exams on it.
While Dr. Johnson's class is extremely entertaining and fun to listen to, he has this book that HE WROTE and 2 of your tests are over this book. Odds are you will fail the tests if you do not completely comprehend the material of his book. Aside from the complete ludicris assignment of buying and reading his book. I wouldve made a B in the class.
In this class, I'm going to fail and don't have fighting chance in passing. The teacher also gave us a test on his book, which was tough to read through and the timeline was beyond confusing throughout said book. It was like forcing us to buy his recently dropped mix tape because an entire test was based on this book.
He's pretty difficult, especially if you're looking for an easy A but he's totally worth taking. He's such a great person and his lectures are actually entertaining to listen to. His book is hard to get through, but if you at least read it you'll pass the test over it. Go to class and actually study and you will pass.
He was a really great professor and he REALLY loves history. Be prepared to take detailed notes and READ. All of the tests include 5 short answer and 1 essay. Great professor, but tuff class. PAY ATTENTION
Dr. Johnson is a wonderful man who is so passionate about his history and students. I would not have survived if it hadn't been for my TA and the SI instructor. Go to them! You will have to WORK for this grade. I slaved over the test reviews and it paid off. Go to EVERY class and ask questions if you are unclear. It's a fun class but difficult.
Dr. Johnson is a fantastic History teacher, he is very passionate about what he does and it's infectious. His tests are based off of his lectures so you need to come to class and fully grasp what he is asking for, which he clearly will let you know when discussing his expectations. It is an easy A if you work for it.
He is a great person, but his class is hard! He even makes you buy and test on a book HE wrote! Do not take!
HE IS AMAZING! TAKE HIM! I have never been in a class let alone HISTORY and actually enjoyed to hear what he had to say and learn! He is intelligent in history. It is not an easy A, you have to take personal notes, but even if I would fail, I completely loved his class. His excitement makes it worth coming every week.
Dr. Johnson is an incredibly passionate and informed man. His class was tough, and you're going to read for every class, however its only around 30 pages or so every class. Sometimes less. His class is student led discussion style, which was odd to have at first but you get used to it very fast. I would definitely recommend him.
This class is unnecessarily hard. When they passed out the first test (class average- 63), the TA's almost joked and laughed about the low scores as if they just graded everyone too hard, just to do it. Averages moved up a little. Don't take this class if you have a heavy course load or don't enjoy 20+ hours of studying history to barely make a B.
Be vwrh specific with class notes! Write sown everything that he says. Attend the SI sessions and be sure and put in about 3-4 extra hours a week for studying- Talk to your TA's. Do your mindtaps, it's worth a test grade! Overall awesome prof. Got me really interested in history- I never was before then. Also, read his book
Dr. Johnson was a hard, but extremely good professor. There are four tests in all along with some online homework which is really easy if you take your time. The tests are very hard and almost impossible to pass without studying, but if you do study you'll be fine. Tests are graded by TA's who are tough but fair. This was a wonderful class overall.
He is by far the best History Prof. His lectures are very interesting and the class discussions make the class interesting. He loves when his student talk beck to him and he is very easy to talk to. the only bad thing is that his book is God awful but is you constantly go to the SI secessions then you will succeed in this class. STUDY GROUPS WORK!!
Dr. Johnson is an amazing professor. He will make class interesting but will require you to put the effort to get the grade you want. You won't be able to pass this class if you don't take notes and study them!!! The homework load is mild and very manageable. Make friends and get groups started and start studying together!! It will save your life.
Dr. Johnson is an extremely effective teacher. I had lucked up with the opportunity of having him. If you go to class & take good notes, you will pass. He also gives out loads of extra credit throughout the semester. I would totally recommend him. He makes Texas State great!
Dr. Johnson is awesome. He knows what he's talking about and keeps lectures very engaging. The TAs are helpful, but they are very tough graders. There are only four tests and they are all essays. They are very difficult and you will not pass without knowing the material inside and out. He gives a few opportunities for extra credit. DO THEM.
This class is very tough for a freshman course. He expects you to remember everything he says. His powerpoints are only pictures. I would not recommend him!
I have never been a fan of history, but Johnson's lectures were so engaging. He tells history like a story, rather than just listing facts. You do have to read a lot, but over all the class is great. I learned a lot and took a lot away from it.
Johnson doesn't teach in this class at all. Its all student-led discussion which is a disaster since no one knows what they are talking about half the time and faking the funk to get a participation grade. This class is a disappointment which is too bad since this is an interesting and essential topic for students of politics and US history.
Professor Johnson loves history, you can tell. His criteria for grading is a bit unclear but he will meet with you to clarify during his office hours. His class is a student led discussion format which is not bad and lets you engage unlike lectures. You get out of ti what you put into it. Very challenging nonetheless.
First time having Johnson and it is clear he has a passion for History and great knowledge about US Diplomacy. However the class was discussion based which sometimes was great and other times was a disaster. The readings were interesting. The tests were hard as he had high expectations and graded tough.
I loved Dr. Johnson! He is such an amazing teacher! His lectures are very entertaining, but be sure to record/ take notes. The exams come from everything he says in lectures. Read his book, Diplomacy in Black and White, before class so you can get a feel for the his style. I am a math major and loved his class! Also, refresh on writing essays!
Dr. Johnson has been one of the best prof's I've ever had. He is energetic, and engrossing in his lectures. You won't walk out with an easy A, but when you earn it, you know that it's because a great man believed in you and taught you well. I took the summer class, which is intensive notes and reading. BUT- you will truly learn in this class. 3
I took Dr. Johnson for History 4388 and 3368W. I can truthfuly say that this gentleman was one of if not the best professor I have had during my time at Texas State. The class is discussion based and your participation in the discussions as well your attendance is not only important but mandatory. Dr. Johnson cares about each and every student.
Professor Johnson will make you work for your grade, but that only makes earning a high grade a greater sense of pride. Get to know your TAs, take their notes seriously, & don't miss class. If you do these things theres no excuse to not do well in the class.
He is very clear about his expectations but is a TOUGH grader! Wants very specific details and in depth thinking. All tests are written essays they are compiled of 2 essays and 3 specific people/place/or events. Doesn't tolerate half the effort and do not cheat he is really strict about that. SI sessions and study groups will be your bestfriend!!!
Johnson is a funny lecturer but I would never take this class again. Miss a day? You are basically done, and you better be a fast typer because you have to get down everything he says . The tests are ridiculous with essays, makes you read his terribly dull book and get tested on it even though it has nothing to do with the material you are learning
HARDEST THING EVER IF YOU WANT A GOOD GPA DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS UNLESS YOU ARE A HISTORY MAJOR. HIS BOOK IS SO BORING, HIS TEST'S ARE HARD....... moral of the story... don't take this class unless you love history.
Makes history interesting, very hard on grading so don't expect to get great grades. Very detailed lectures, amazing SIs and TAs, loves his job and makes things fun.
Dr. Johnson is extremely passionate about history and it shows in his lectures. He does make you work for your grade, but it make you feel more pride when you do earn a high score. He genuinely cares about each & every one of his students & provides many resources to help you be successful in the class. My favorite professor I've ever had. TAKE HIM
Great professor. Very knowledgeable and PASSIONATE about history. But. this is supposed to be an INTRO history class. If you are looking for an easy history class to boost your GPA and are NOT a history major-Don't take. Hard tests, his book is difficult to read, MUST be in lecture. Definitely wouldn't consider this an INTRO to history course.
Dr. Johnson is unlike any history instructor I've ever had. He is articulate, engaging and extremely passionate in his lectures. He has a very high standard for his students' performance, and, though he does offer a modest amount of extra credit, it's hard to get a "good" grade out of the course without a large investment of time and effort.
80% of your grade is from 4 exams, ALL WRITING, NO MC ! 1 of the exam is over a book he wrote himself, & the exams are all about why are events significant instead of the who what when where and why. A friend I work with gave me a solution, take this course at ACC if you like multiple choice tests! Take only if you love writing & major in History.
Take history at another college, you'll thank me in the long run. Literally hardest freshman class EVER! You are expected to remember everything ! No PowerPoints or anything so if you miss a day might as well drop the class. He gives reviews but they are ridiculous. Take the class if you don't care about your GPA & love history
One word BAD !
Dr. Johnson really enjoys teaching the students, making them laugh, and being able to have a good time in class. You can tell he enjoys what he does. Tests are graded by the TA's and ours were tough graders. The tests consists of 5 ID's (40 pts) and an essay (60 pts). Tests were hard, but I'd take his class again just because he makes lecture fun.
Dr. Johnson is by far the best professor I have had so far. I am a studio art major and I really dislike science and history, yet Dr. Johnson is so enthusiastic, genuine, kind, and caring, that he really made that class actually enjoyable! He really cares about his students, I have never seen someone else so invested and genuinely interested!
I took this course as a freshman and it was one of the highest grades I got for my first semester. Dr. Johnson is very passionate about his course and is clear on the first day his class will be hard. He holds very high expectations for his students. Study groups will be your best friend in this course.
Professor Johnson was the most challenging professor I've had so far; however, if you take good notes and study test materials it's very rewarding. He usually gives out an extra credit opportunity with each exam and gives the prompts for the essays a week prior to the exam. Dr. Johnson is a very respected man and gives amazing lectures.
You have to put in work for this class but it is worth it. He is an amazing professor and teaches you everything you need to pass the class.
Honestly his class is very hard and i spent multiple all nighters studying for his exams which you will not pass if you don't take heavily detailed notes. I tape recorded him because he does speak very fast. Going to the SI sessions the night before the test is the only reason i passed since they go over everything and leave you to study for it.
Amazing class. You will learn so much more than the average history class... If you show up and pay attention and take notes and study. If not, you will fail.
Dr. Johnson was one of my favorite professors. He is very engaging with his lectures. Tests are lecture based so make sure you take good notes. As long as you study and go to SI sessions, you will be fine. Offers a lot of extra credit is offered. Its not as bad as other people make it out to be, just study!
Dr. Johnson is the greatest teacher I have had. I was in a class of about 250 and saw me the next semester and remembered me by name and where I sat in class. His class is very hard but he spells it out in the lectures and the SI sessions help tremendously.
History at TXST is harder here than most anywhere else. I dropped this class halfway through the semester because it is almost impossible to pass. Take this class at a community college because its not worth the drop in your GPA or the time and stress. Johnson was very passionate about what he was lecturing though which made him a good prof
Teacher loves what he does. lectures are fun. he is a very tough grader, expects a lot of you. preparation for his tests take forever. test involves written key terms & essay. he makes you read his own book (which is every students nightmare- hard to read and understand). get ready to study in groups for hours. do the work, you'll do fine!
Dr. Ronald Johnson is the most amazing professor I have ever had! Although he makes you work for you grade, it is definitely doable and rewarding at the end! Go to class, take good notes, and you'll be fine. He's a very respectable man and remembers all his students by their name. So passionate about everything he does. Loved him!!
So, when originally taking Dr.J I was warned that if you didn't read his book, you'd fail the class. This was not the case, I read the book and still made a D on the exam. His class is writing intensive but he gives extra credit. He is energized and deeply cares about ALL his students. He is knowledgeable and inspiring. 10/10
While this was one of the most challenging courses I have taken I am glad that I took it. I learned valuable research and writing skills. Dr. Johnson cares about his students' success inside and outside of the class and if you are willing to work hard to succeed he will work with you to help you achieve your goals.
He is so amazing, such an inspiring teacher. He is by far my favorite teacher and he really makes sure that you understand everything. The class can be very challenging but it is so worth it.
He is honestly so cool. He is so friendly and passionate about helping his stidents succeed. He honestly LOVES txst and history. Very hard exams so if youre up for a challenge definitely reccommend.
Professor Johnson has to be the best lecturer I've had by far in college. He is so passionate about History and lectures the whole time. His class was never boring and really encourages his students to participate in the lecture. His tests are very tough, but if you put in the work and see your TA you should do great.
Dr. Johnson is an absolutely amazing human being and is one of the best professors a Texas State. If you are a History major, definitely take him because you and him can geek out over anything. Even if you are a CJ or Religious Studies major, take him because he has his masters in religion from Boston University and worked for the CIA.
Dr. Johnson is by far one of my favorite professors at Texas State. The class itself is very easy and laid back, but the since the class is writing intensive, be prepared to work for it. Show up to class and labs and talk to your TA, honestly wish I would have done that.
Amazing lectures, but the exams are too much. There are 5 essay format exams, they are 100% of your grade. The grading is VERY strict. Very Time consuming class, you are given 3 prompts a week before the exam and a random one will be tested, and you wont know which until the exam starts. This is not an "Entry level" class.
Kind of a tough class but lectures are always interesting and he makes it exciting. Writing intensive
Ron Jon is a great professor you will learn a lot with his teaching style he gets all students engaged and overall teaches history as if it came from a children's book. THE CATCH is you will have 5 essays 2 reading exams and 3 Lecture essays and they are worth 20% each essay. Essays are very difficult and have to work as a whole class to pass.
Johnson is a very nice professor overall. Although he will not work with you whatsoever he lets his TAs do all the grading giving them full authority. Also he doesn't give out homework or anything to help your grade only test and he expects you to write like you are a student trying to receive a master's, he does not help you better your writing.
Get with a study group and form ideas for your papers TOGETHER. SI sessions aren't that helpful. He will give you three prompts to study for and you'll have to memorize each because he will not tell you which one he will choose until the day of the exam(s).
Professor Johnson is pretty awesome. He puts a lot of work and passion into his lectures, so even if history isn't your thing, there aren't a whole lot of dull moments. He gives you your essay prompts beforehand to prepare, gives you extra credit opportunities, and a day to makeup any exams you missed.
Prof Johnson is honestly an amazing professor. However, his exams are BRUTAL! The grading comes only from exams about material covered in class and what's in the books. Helpful tip for when writing: He is NOT looking for a review/summary of what happened. He wants you to form your own ideas and ARGUE why you think something happened.
I actually loved Professor Johnson, he is very passionate about history and he wants his students to learn a lot. You will have to buy 2 books which you will take 2 essays over and 2 essays on the in-class lecture, which are the only grades. The TAs are the grade the essays, not the professor but the TAs offer study sessions are other teacher aids.
I am writing this review 3 years after I took Professor Johnson, and I can still say he has been one of my favorite and best professors from my time at Texas State. He made it easy to want to learn more and understand history. He is passionate and that passion really comes through in his lectures. Amazing professor 10/10 recommend!
One of the greatest history professors. Very passionate and knowledgeable. There are 2 short books you have to read. Go to lecture because that is the only place you'll get the material, but he always made them interesting. Could not have been more thankful I took him! PS always form an argument and study groups help immensely!!!!
Professor Johnson is an AMAZING professor. I don't think I've ever been in a class where I was so engaged, especially a history class! He makes class fun and I've learned so many things. Definitely recommend going to SI sessions, they are so helpful especially for upcoming exams. He definitely cares about his students and their success!
Dr. Johnson is an INCREDIBLE professor. I did not like learning History until I had his class; he is so passionate about what he does. He is engaging, cares so deeply about his students, and fun to learn from. I wish I could take this class multiple times. History is a hard subject, but he makes it worth it. You won't regret taking this professor!
The best professor ever. There are 5 exams total: 2 over interesting books, and 3 regular. He gives extra credit opportunities and gives you the essay prompts beforehand. He goes into depth in his lectures so if you take good notes, you'll do fine on the essays. He loves answering questions as well so don't be afraid to speak up! He cares a lot.
