Very Hard to understand at times with when hes speaking or writing. Hard class and very boring. I had a hard time staying awake through out class. He also keeps attendance everyday.
It was realyl hard to understand him at the begining of the semester. He doesn't make the class easy, but if you tell him that you don't understand he'll try and find a way to explain it to you. Be prepared to show up to class everyday, and almsot fall asleep.
never again
Well meaning, but he will confuse the hell out of you. Not a bad person, willing to work and help you. Take this class if you need to work on your "critical thinking" skills. Critical thinking my butt.
pretty good
If looking for a challenge, take him. If you ever experience any difficulties, Prof. Loeffler is willing to help you get through your problem. Making an appointment with him outside of class time was never a problem. He is a great person, and I highly recommend him. Whoo!!!!!!!!!!!!
GREAT guy. Knowledgeable, EXTREMELY helpful. He came hours before class to meet with students who wanted help. The only problem is clarity in his lectures. Often made silly mistakes that he'd have to go back and correct, confusing students. Ask questions in class to make sure you understand.
i dont recomend taking this as a SWS class your first semester fresh year. Alot of attention is needed to do well and you must go to all classes because it does effect your grade. he will try to help
I thought this class would be very interesting, but I had a hard time understanding him at times and he has an accent which complicates things. He knows what he is talking about I just think that sometimes he gets confused and starts jumping around with new information as he lectures.
sucks hardcore
His German accent isn't as hard to understand as everyone says. Just do the reading, and when he offers study sessions, GO. If you show up, pay attention, take notes, and do the work, you'll be golden.
I don't understand what people mean by his accent being hard to understand. Its perfectly clear. He seems enthusiastic about his subject, and it comes off well. Also well versed in history.
His German accent isn't hard to understand in my opinion. While he does tend to jump around a bit during lectures it's never TOO hard to follow... Otherwise he's a great teacher, enthusiastic about his class and VERY helpful and eager to help the students understand the subject. I would reccomend him to anyone who wants to take a philosophy class.
prof.Loeffler is by far my favorite professor, ever. i don't much care for philosophy, but he is such a great guy, and he's so helpful. i reccomend him highly. also, stop by his office hours and get to know him. he's a smart guy and really enjoys having discussions. he talks to and treats his students as if they are as equally intelligent as he is.
Very picky on test and papers for small details that are difficult to predict. Overall tough grader. You must go to all classes and participate every day. The lectures and class discussions are interesting but the fact that he refuses to give A's really turned me off to him.
I knew nothing about philosophy before this class, and loeffler taught so well im going to get a minor in philosophy. tough grader, but, in all honesty, you don't really need to read the chapters to get a decent B. if you go and talk to him once or twice you'll get all of your participation points just by showing up and staying awake...
Nice guy... but confusing as hell. He tries to help by answering your questions, but then he just confuses himself and everyone else that hardly knows what is going on to begin with. He won't EVER let you out early, you will stay until the last second of every class. Ahh... this class just frusterated the hell out of me.
Easiest Prof. ive ever had. Explains everything so well, that i didnt even had to read the material. But i feel lik every single day id walk out of that classroom and i learned about 20-30 different things that i hadnt the slightest idea about before. His papers are kind of tough, but they really challenge you to argue for both sides of an argument
Thsi class was not difficult at all, at least not in my opinion. Write the papers, show up to class, and pretty much write down whatever he says and you'll blow through it, easy. It's a philosophy course, he's going to question everything and argue different points and sides. That's the point of philosophy guys.
not bad.. very boring.. but easy.. he writes everything on the board to the point where you dont have to understand what you are reading.. he will explain all of it.. but its very hard to stay awake in his class..
pretty easy but boring class. Nice guy.
The material was tough if you aren't extremely competent in philosophy, but he tried hard to make it understandable. He had a lot of energy, and was very knowledgeable. Very accommodating, and he cared very much for his students and their progress.
I had Ronald for 101 the semester before 440. I would never have said that 101 was a hard class, and if you're falling asleep or not getting it you're either a dunce or philosophy just isn't for you. He's a tough grader, especially in higher classes, very helpful and interesting. I would recommend him to anyone who is at least somewhat intelligent.
Excellent teaching ability and style.
Loeffler is awesome and is very very knowledgeable about philosophy. Contrary to popular belief, he does give out A's, but you better work for it. His German accent isn't hard to understand, in fact it kicks ass. He's a great guy and he knows tons about the philosophy of mind, plus his jokes are hilarious.
This class is kicking my ass. It is way above my head, 400 level theme class. I'm hoping to get a C. However, he is very smart, very helpful and cares about your success in his course. Epistemology is his baby, so you're in for a great ride. Do the reading participate and be good at analytical philosophy and you'll have it made. Also, he's delish.
Very fun and interesting. Helpful.
Ronald is a very nice guy and you can tell he has a passion for Philosophy, but he isn't the greatest at explaining the material and assignments are often confusing. He is also a pretty difficult grader for a 101 class.
Ronald really loves philosophy and it's real apparent. His class isn't that hard, but his essay assignments aren't always clear. Ronald is a fabulous philosophy prof, and I'd definitely take him in another course.
I agree with the comments of the beautiful soul below me, whomever they may be. Ronald Loeffler is a tough grader but loves philosophy in a way that inspires me to reach for the stars!!
Ronald is a very tough professor, even for a 101 class. He expects a lot from his students, so be prepared to discuss the readings. His passion for philosophy is contagious, so he's really fun and entertaining while still being very clear. I would highly recommend taking a class from him, but be committed to working hard.
Decent Prof. Hard grader, really passionate about philosophy. He isn't the greatest prof, but not someone I'd steer totally away from.
Prof. Loeffler explains things very clearly and leads good class discussions. If you do the reading and take notes in class you will have no problem passing. All assignments and tests are in the form of essays and are never on a topic that wasn't discussed in detail.
Prof.Loeffler is a really tough grader! You better work really hard or you will not pass that class.
I really enjoyed having him as a professor. If you attend class regularly, take notes and skim over the reading you'll do fine. Attendance isn't mandatory but he usually has a weekly 1 page essay assignment on the readings, so its pretty important to go. He's a tough grader on his papers but is always willing to help. The class is comprised of 3-4
Very interesting guy, I had a lot of fun in his class. If you have any depth to you, you will enjoy this class. He loves debating with the students. I got a lot better at arguing after I took this class. Awesome guy, made me want to take many more philosophy classes.
Professor Loeffler is a great teacher. Very nice guy, lots of wit and knows what he's teaching. The homework wasn't that intense, but is VITAL to gain understanding. Logic was a little hard (especially a 6-9pm on thursday), but very worth it. If you choose to take this class, choose this professor!
Loeffler was an interesting professor. He made Logic more fun, although he didn't make it all clear. His test's and quizzes were easy as long as you do the assigned assignments you are all right. Would recommend him.
Decent prof. A little unorganized, but he definitely knows what hes talking about. He does have a bit of an accent but hes not hard to understand at all.
Loeffler is kind of crazy, but very interesting. He moves at a million miles an hour making the class difficult at times. Once you get used to him, and the class, its a breeze! I'd take him again
The class was pretty difficult for an introductory and mandatory course. He expects you to have just as much passion and understanding for Philosophy as he does. I found myself struggling on exams, but doing well on essays outside of class. He's knowledgeable of the topic but had difficulty translating it to students.
Great professor and very helpful. His classes are hard as hell but he will help you.
best prof ive had. So funny, very easy to listen to. Hes german and has a strong accent and it really isnt hard to understand at all, in fact it makes him very interesting to listen to. He really teaches what has to be taught and gives good input and is just a great guy!
Made an easy 100 level class seriously hard. His grading is unfair and tough. Does a fairly good job communicating the material, but my grade was lower than it should have been.
Loeffler took some getting used to I'm not gonna lie. He knows what he's teaching and can relay the information pretty well. There's a couple quizzes here and there, some online work, and sometimes a work sheet. Overall a pretty low-key class homework wise. Loeffler is a good guy. This class wasn't a breeze, but it wasn't insanely hard either
He treats you like you are in high school. The material he presents is not clear. He is willing to help but only if you go to his office hours. WILL CALL YOU OUT IF YOU ARE ON YOUR PHONE, NO EXCEPTIONS! Took this class instead of a math credit. Wish I would have taken the math class instead.
I took PHI 102 as my SWS class and it was a struggle. Every single lecture he ever gave us repeated what he said in the class before, and right toward the end, he would introduce a new topic. He is an intelligent man when speaking to him, but he doesn't know much about grammar. Today in class he asked us, "Do you spell fantasy with an f or a ph?"
The class wasn't my Favorite. Prof. Loeffler is super nice but he tends to be super confusing in his lectures! Every assignment he gave i had to Learn/Research it on my own because his lectures don't help at all! Theres 2 term papers you have to write, the first one was pretty easy and he did do a good job guiding us with it!
Great Professor, very caring and resonable. Be prepared to 500-600 word responses every week over the readings. Class is mandatory, so if you skip more than 3 classes you won't pass with above a C. Participation is about 20% of your grade so if you don't participate often your grade will reflect. Favorite prof thus far.
Unless you love philosophy, this professor/class will most likely not be enjoyable for you. He as an accent and is a little hard to listen to. He doesn't enter grades in until after the exam.
Professor Loeffler has changed my views on life in general, just through his Tuesday and Thursday lectures of Philosophy 101. His way of teaching makes you question everything, in a good way! He is understanding (if you miss an assignment it's okay) yet he has clear expectations which is good. Taking 3 more classes with him! Awesome lectures.
Class is discussion based. Participation is graded. 500 word responses on readings once every 1/2 weeks. Can turn these in the next class period instead of assigned. Exams are breeze just know the material. Really cares about making your life easier if things get rough - will work w/ you if you can't turn a paper in on time. Can miss 4 classes.
He is a very nice Proff and his lectures are very discussion heavy. If you don't go to class or read the books then you probably wont pass. However if you read what you're suppose to you will pass. Even if you don't read the whole text and just the main points then the essays that he gives are a breeze. He will call you out if youre on your phone.
The class is all discussion based. He made our class move desks into a circle every class period. He doesn't put any grades into blackboard. If you want to know your grade you have to visit him during his office hours. There's a lot of reading and only like two major papers and a few 500 word response papers.
Dr. Loeffler is a very smart and inspirational professor who I can't recommend enough. He presents the material in a provocative yet approachable manner and is very tolerant of students opinions. Finally he is very caring and strives to help students learn.
Class is very discussion based and you have 500 word papers every week or two on the readings. Grades participation but you can miss 4 classes
I really liked him. He always did contemplative meditation with us before every class and the about of work outside of class is not bad at all. There was only one assignment a week. He is very nice and forgiving. Would take again
Prof Loeffler is okay. He is knowledgable in this course but overall it's not great. There is always a ton of homework each week.
Ronald is a nice guy and all, but he isn't the best teacher. Homework almost every week and the material is super weird. The whole class had no idea what was going on half of the time. If you study you will be fine though.
The problem with him is that philosophy is his whole world. Therefore, you must also treat it as yours. He has this extremely stupid attendance policy where you cannot miss more than 4 classes. You would think you could get out of this with a legit excuse but he doesn't seem to care. You have to be on your deathbed to get an excused absence.
GPA booster. Suprised he wasnt rated higher. I showed up and half effortly did every assignment and half effortly studied and I still passed with an A-. He is super enguaging with everybody and has very intelligent conversations with the whole class, accepting everyones' point of view. As long as you put in a little effort, its hard to not do good.
I dont know how he isnt scored higher. Seriously one of the best professors Ive ever had. I can honestly say that I learned so much from his class and would 100% take again. Yes there is work but he doesnt grade hard and the homework is beneficial for the exams.
He truly does know what he is teaching and wants participation in the class. He grades very harshly with feedback to understand how that grade was received. The class has a homework assignment weekly, so it's not a heavy load of work. He is very helpful and wants his students to benefit from course.
I think he deserves a higher rating, he seemed to care a lot about the students. He does have an accent & does meditation before we start class. The only thing I didnt like was he doesnt give As on paper so I ended up with an A- overall. You dont need to be 100% right on anything as long as youre trying to engage with the reading.
This class is a hybrid when I took it. He expects you to do the reading and do a short report on the reading. He also has weekly *video* presentations done by groups of students in the class. Sometimes he lets the presentation do all the lecturing for him, so if you're looking for a Professor who lectures well- I wouldn't suggest him.
Homework was normally assigned the weekend and then we discussed it the next week during class. You need to be there to understand and also participate to show that you care, he loves the students giving ideas so we can go off of what each other think and say. A funny professor but really wants the best for us! He is so passionate in philosophy!
I liked him a lot, he really cared about philosophy. The content is very interesting and helpful, but the essays are difficult and theres a lot of group work.
He shows genuine empathy and care for his students and wants them to succeed. You do need to take notes and study the material but the lectures are in depth and he is there for support or questions.
I can tell that Loeffler is very knowledgeable about ethics and truly has a deep interest in the subject and its theories. Each week we would read about a philosopher and his/her theory, then he would post a lecture, handout, and discussion board about the theory before giving us an assignment. Very consistent, but lots of writing.
This was his first year teaching this course and u could tell it meant a lot to him its very mediation focused and I was NOT expecting that so with that being said I took this for the credit it was easy and 8 week course but dont take this if you dont wanna meditate and evaulate yourslef
I haven't even finished the class and I definitely wish I has picked another. We have a 500 word response paper due every week, given about a week to write a 1500 word paper, he will deduct points based on your style of writing and you'll never get full participation. He's nice and intelligible, but I wouldn't ever want him as a prof again
This has got to be one of the worst classes I've taken at gv. We got papers every week and grades strictly; he'll say we didn't do something he wanted, but never told us he wanted it in the first place. The final exam also had 131 terms (most of which we never discussed) and 33 essays he could choose from and just hope we know them. AWFUL!!!
Second time having Loeffler. He does not like long lectures and just talking in the front of class. He intentionally plans group discussion time, large group discussions, and short lectures which makes class go by quite fast. Short response paper due weekly, two 1500 word term papers. Not an easy class but great if you work at it.
Professor Loeffler is incredibly friendly and you can tell how passionate he is about what he is teaching. However, sometimes he wouldn't spend enough time on one topic before moving onto the next. Overall, this class was not difficult if you attend and pay attention.
The professor is consistently late in releasing assignments through blackboard, is incredibly knit picky, assigning tons of readings and written responses, requiring daily hw to be printed, he is rather condescending and seems such in his own personal interpretations of ideas
weekly reading and corresponding writing assignment, 1 group presentation, midterm and final exam, 2 term papers. seems like a lot but really manageable, prof grades relatively easy. takes attendance and wants you to participate. really easy class even if you do the bare minimum
I loved Professor Loeffler. Yes, there was homework, but he doesn't grade it too hard. In class discussions were great and truly helped with the comprehension of the material! Professor Loeffler is one of my favorite professors. 10/10 would take again.
there is two term paper which are simple and one group project that is a powerpoint. weekly homework thats max 250 wordsw but super easy and he is very caring. i liked him alot and he does have a bit of a swedish accent but it not awful, can be a bit boring but overall class was easy and i would recommend him.
Awesome guy! I took a once a week 3 hour session, but recommend taking twice a week because lectures are long. Participate in discussions & do the homework with effort & you will pass with an A! Two easy papers & open book midterm/final which was fairly easy as long are you come to class. Communicate needs (extensions etc) and he is understanding!
Ron knows the material he teaching, however, he does not know how to convey it to students. He does care and he does try, however, it's just not there. This should have been my easiest class having been in other 3-400 level classes, but this was not my hardest, but the most work-heavy course by far. Also, almost all homework must be handwritten.
You can take Logic as a math gen ed credit and I greatly recommend if you struggle with numbers, the material is easy enough however this class has a lot of group discussion and Loeffler gets in your face if he doesn't think you're engaged enough, and he will call you out in front of everyone. Makes an effort to learn everyone's name just so he can
All he does is beg people to participate and put you in groups for 45 minutes
Professor Loeffler is really good but this can be a difficult class for some people. You need to apply yourself if you want to do well, so doing all the homework (thoroughly and with answers explained) along with showing up consistently to lectures is key. Loeffler makes himself readily available for questions and wants you to succeed.
Prof. Loeffler was fantastic. I took his Logic class to cover a gen ed and I found it incredibly interesting. It's always helped me to engage when the profs are excited about teaching their material and that is definetly prof Loeffler. If you show up to class you'll be fine. He allows homework to he turned in late and there is no lever that much.
Prof. Loeffler really hits his stride in upper level philosophy courses. He is incredibly knowledgeable and personable, lectures always felt comfortable and like one big collegial discussion. A fair bit of work is required, but all of it is necessary and Loeffler is always looking to improve! Can't recommend this class and prof enough.
Ronald was an okay enough professor, makes you do meditation before class for like 2 minutes everytime, and will call you out if you're on your phone at all. Class was very lecture heavy, and often felt like he was dragging on just to use up the entire class when we could've finished early, so plan on staying the entire time too.
Attendance mandatory, but overall, he was very easy to have and a great professor!
He is super knowledgeable and very passionate about philosophy. He does short meditation at the start of each class, which I personally like. The topics are super interesting but there is a lot of homework- weekly readings and writing pieces. Midterm and final are both open note. A very though provoking class, he keeps track of participation.
