nice guy, makes the worst bad jokes ever, but it does keep you moderately awake
Super nice guy. Tough class for non-ISAT majors, but not awful
fun guy, cheesy jokes, flashes through the powerpoints but they are posted online. study for tests.
HAHAHA FUNNIEST GUY EVER. Sooo many bad jokes, I love it! He loves his work. He's a little excited about the booze...
Easy class if you know your biology. His humor is dry but the class is easy
Funny, very clearly explains what will be on the exams (even tells some questions in advance) and gives all info on how to study. Labs are often short and not very hard.
lots of jokes, but is not helpful and gets impatient. Do not take if you don't already know all of the material and understand it well
ron is very corny, but also funny....i hvae fun in his class, but sometimes he goes too fast while he's explaining new things to the class and you feel stupid asking him to explain. tests were fair if you atteneded class and the lectures are also good.
Really knows his stuff about biotech. If you study you will do well. His humor is great ha-ha
Raab's a nice guy, has a decent teaching style, he's pretty understanding for problems and such, and his jokes are the kind of thing that make you try to avoid eye contact. I recommend him.
Dr. Raab is a very fair professor. He tells a ton of bad jokes, and sometimes you just want to roll your eyes. But, he's extremely knowledgable about the topic, explains the subject matter very well, and it's really up to the student to apply him/herself.
Great teacher. Lots of corny jokes. Just as long as you show up to class you'll do well. Everything on his exam is said in class. I didn't even purchase the book. He gives exam reviews that go over all the material too. Labs are extremely easy! Definately take him
Great Professor. Yeah, corny jokes but its better than a dull lecture. Raab knows his field and is always willing to help. Go to class, take notes, use power point and tests are no problem. Labs are very straight forward and Raab helps out a lot. Great professor - inspired me to get into BioTech!
I have never met a professor who is so lax about his job. He obviously does not give a damn about teaching gisat 113. You ask him a question, and he looks at you like you're mentally retarded and will proceed to repeat verbatim what he just said. Plus he has no imagination. labs = busy work, tests = mindless memorization. so tedious. avoid him.
He really knows the material. Great teacher, humorous too. If you are stumped, ask a question, he'll probably give you the "Why don't you know this?" look. Don't pay any attention to this, ask the question again, be persistant, and you will get a detailed and helpful explanation.
I had Raab for 113 and liked him but for 305 hes been a jerk. If you ask a question he will get pissed off and you better be sure of what your doing because he will not help you.
Dr. Raab knows what he is talking about, he changes the lab so that it goes faster and is easier for us to understand, even though he is not a bio professor (he's isat) I would still take him for any bio lab he teaches. He makes dumb jokes, but has a great sense of humor.
Great teacher. He is the reason why I would sector in Biotech. Yes, although he does make some really corny jokes, he also does a good job of letting you know what will be on the exams. Its just your job to study it. I received an A in his class and will definitely take him again if I get the chance.
Few assignments, informative lectures, basically-give-them-away test reviews, and short labs. It's high school/discovery channel biology. Do note: He's corny like no one else but it's word because he stays on track.
Raab is kind of a belittling jerk. He explains things well but won't do it a second time. Tough grader. He preaches bioterror awareness. I think he cares about his students but he sure is a strick mother.
He comes accross hard core, but is really willing to help if you are willing to put some effort into the lab class. You have to keep up with this lab. You got to like his "good" sense of humor.
Wow, what a guy. Viciously cut-throat when it comes to late or missing work. Ultra arrogant know it all. Expects students to learn very quickly. Assignments/tests are made to be difficult due to unclear instructions. Raab thinks students are telepathic. He thinks they will just know to embellish even after a simple question has been answered.
As a Gen Ed class I was not looking forward to taking 113, but Raab made it fun and interesting. His tests can be hard if you don't study or skip alot of class. By the end of the semester I really liked this class due to the teacher.
textbook is the lab book. Don't miss class because he will not allow you to make it up. He gives quizzes before most classes. Will find difficult things in an easy class. He does care, but he is very stubborn and has only one right answer.
Most useful class in biotech. Dr. Raab makes the material relavent. There is plenty of homework and the exams can be hard. He likes it when you laugh at his "jokes", but they do make the class fun and sometimes help you remember some of the material.
Everything is spelled out in black and white. I have neither an ability nor an interest in science and was there for gened, but Raab tells you what you need to know and when to know it. No attendance but class is important as he is constantly giving you a heads up/ec opportunities! If you're looking for a low maintenance gened to pass, Raab is good
I am not usually very good with science, but he is an excellent teacher! I really appreciate the help he is willing to give. Dr. Raab is always willing to meet with students outside of his office hours to help them out. Going to class will really helps and prepares you for the tests.
Condescending, not personable at all. Not very good at explaining things, and if you ask him to repeat he talks down to you. Absurd. I will never take another class with him again
Took 113 as a gened requirement. Wasn't too difficult really. Three exams - study for them, but they aren't bad. Lab reports are large but not hard, easy A's. Announced lab quizzes, read the lab before class to do well. Very willing to help and wants his students to do well. Definitely recommend him if you need the credits!!
Best Lab I ever had with this instructor!
Raab is the best lab professor to take for 305. He is so nice and always willing to help. lab quizzes are announced and there's always extra credit opportunities. great class
This class is pretty hard if you don't have a background on the subject. A LOT of memorizing for tests. No study guide so you have to kill yourself studying five trillion powerpoints jammed with info. The essays assigned help you grade a lot. Not too long, not too complicated. However, Raab is a nice guy and helps your grade where he can.
Anyone can take this class. He makes it fun and interesting, never a dull moment. The one week lab was a joke, he wants everyone to succeed! Just show up and be able to memorize a couple of terms.
Easily the best professor I have taken at JMU! He was extremely helpful, funny and easy! He made class so enjoyable and always made us laugh. I actually learned so much that will help me in the future too. Labs were fun/easy. Impossible to not get an A in the week long course. Take him, take him, take him. Youll be surprised how much you learn.
First test is the hardest.
So condescending and made me feel stupid in front of the entire class almost every period. Expects you to know what he is talking about without even teaching it to you
Raab is a very interesting professor. No need for the book, His powerpoints are useless except for when he lectures on them. Half the slides he says "you dont need to know this". Do not take this class if you plan on skipping going to lecture. Only grades are three tests.
Worst teacher I've ever had. He doesn't teach, talks down to you, and if you go to his office when its not office hours he won't talk to you, even if he isn't doing anything. Avoid at all costs! I have had some bad teachers here, and most of the time you learn to deal with them because there is no other option, but he makes you not want to even try
Main problem with Raab was he doesn't teach the material. Basically you have to teach yourself off his slides which are super unclear. Luckily I'm pretty good w/ biology/chemistry so I got by, but if you're not I wouldn't recommend taking him. He likes to sneak in little things into his test that you couldn't possibly know without going to class.
Great class with a great professor! Full of a variety of stuff that's as interesting as it is scary. Easier if you have taken a class in chem or bio, but not impossible if you haven't. Pay attention to videos/books/lectures. Little details make it to the test, but he doesn't grade those too harshly, and it came with FEMA certificates, so thats cool
Raab is a very knowledgeable guy but bad at conveying concepts. The entire class is based off of power points that are difficult to follow. Lectures are boring and if you ask him questions personally he'll make you feel stupid. He always tells stories of when he worked in the field. It's obvious he doesn't enjoy teaching.
Great class. He is very good at relating current events to topics being covered in class. You do have to put time in studying. Attendance is not required, but I would not recommend missing class. A lot of material is covered that may not be on power points that are posted on canvas. He does a good review before each exam.
only 3 exams for the whole semester, he doesn't curve. He doesn't take attendance, but if you don't go to class you won't pass. Classes are lecture HEAVY, and it gets very boring at time. He makes you feel stupid if you don't know the answer. The labs are a lot of work but easy A's. Do not recommend him if you can't teach yourself the material.
No homework, but the class is 100% lectures and no classwork. Attendance is not taken, however you NEED to know the info on the lectures in order to pass the class. The grade for the class is only 3 tests, thats it. You have to work for a good grade and lectures are very boring
I find the class very interesting. Covers topics that are outside the normal science class. Does not take attendance but being in class will let you know what is going to be on the exams. You do have to put in some study time to do well
Super fun person and very accomplished in his field! He really knows what he's talking about and will present potentially dry info with humor and interesting personal stories. Took no attendance and entire grade was a couple tests and one paper graded easily. Everything is covered in lectures with minimal studying needed if you show up. Take him!
Took his ISCI 104, Weapons of Mass Destruction, class over Winter Session this year. The guy is hilarious and you can obviously tell that he loves what he does! His dad jokes get a little old but it makes the class interesting and it had no homework and only one test at the end which he tells you most of the answers. Trust me take this guy!
Professor Raab is like your dad, even has the jokes. I really enjoyed his class because he included relevance to the outside world in what we were learning. You will have to study, but as long as you take good notes in his lectures you will be absolutely fine. You also shouldn't skip class, because sometimes he teaches different stuff than his pwpt
Fall 2020: Interesting class. Raab is a good professor and makes material easy to understand. Began every lecture by talking about how current events relate to homeland security. You get FEMA certifications which are easy to complete. Tests are not bad as long as you read the textbook and take notes from the powerpoints during lectures.
Took Raab for the 1-credit lab course and it was a piece of cake. 5 lectures with maybe 30 minutes of homework each night and no final exam. He's a really nice guy and cares about what he teaches. Definitely recommend taking this over a semester long chem or bio lab.
Dr. Raab is awesome!! I just finished my winter session course and fled to give this man a great review. I thought he was super engaging and clear. You can tell he enjoys what he's teaching and is super smart. Gotta love his dad jokes too. He gave daily tasks- if you just put in some effort you'll get a good grade. TAKE HIM!!
Dr. Raab's ISCI104 class was useful, interesting, and easy. I would recommend for anyone trying to fulfill this requirement with something that isn't too much work. The material he taught was also applicable to real life, so it didn't feel like a waste.
Took ISCI 104 over summer with Raab, easiest class I have ever taken in my life, and I got my lab gen-ed done. One assignment a day for a week and you're done. There were some parts for the HW that I couldn't do, but I just emailed him about it and he graded it like the question wasn't there. An hour a day makes your lab requirement go away!
easiest and most doable maymester course to take if you have a busy summer or want to actually enjoy your time off school. Just homework each week and a test each week. he lets you work ahead too. I finished the HW in two weeks and just took the exams when they opened. Dr. Raab also answers emails very efficiently. PLEASE take this for a gen Ed!
Solid choice for a gen ed, good to take over maymester. Weekly homework assignments and exams. Content is pretty easy, but be warned that there are no lectures or videos of him explaining anything, so you have to be comfortable teaching yourself. I thought it was an easy A nonetheless.
I had him for the lab portion of ISAT 113 and definitely recommend. He treated it like a gen ed and as long as you did the lab submissions it was an easy A. The labs weren't too bad and your grade consists of the lab submission and lab quizzes prior to lab and they are online. Solid choice, not too hard if you are not a science person.
I liked Dr. Raab. Most of the work for this class was done inside the lecture time. Weekly Canvas quizzes outside of class, but they were pretty easy. We had to keep a lab notebook and document our results in it, but doing that was not bad at all. Dr. Raab is good at explaining things and being helpful during and outside of class. Highly recommend!
You're only graded on 4 exams for the entire course. He provides limited resources, only slide shows with 100s of slides and half of them aren't even relevant and practice problems that he doesn't post the answers to or go over in class. It feels like he wants you to fail and drop his class. Average of tests were always 50% and he wouldn't curve.
Very condescending to students, tests are very hard as he grades tough and purposely tries to trick you on questions, boring lectures, has multiple 90+ slide slideshows for units (60% of the slides don't even matter), doesn't go over practice problems and assigns them with no answer key, you are only graded on 4 tests, avoid at all costs
Very difficult class & grade is based off of four tests. No study guide is given and review sheets with no answer key and not gone over in class. Material is just pages of unorganized slide shows. Isnt welcoming or inviting. Dropping this class and hopefully getting a better professor for 113 next semester
It feels like he wants you to fail, after tests he tells you you should just drop the class. Your grade is based on only 4 exams. He gives no resources beside slideshows where half of it is not relevant. In class he only goes over like two math problems. The problems on the test will be 10x harder than what was practiced in class.
Biotechnology with long and difficult terms, 200+ slides of info for each test and all questions are short answer so you need to fully understand and be able to right out tough terms. once you miss two classes each absence after is 2% of your total grade left. extremely boring lectures.
DO NOT TAKE! Unless you want to feel dehumanized and stupid, this isn't the class for you. Your entire grade is only made up of 4 exams, and he continually talks down to the class during his lectures. Attendance is mandatory and after 3 absences he takes 2% off your grade. Would never recommend.
Worst and rudest professor ever! You are graded on 4 exams that are all short answered. He gives no course material for you to use to study beside 200 slide slideshows where half of the information will not be on the test. Do not take him take the other professor if you want a chance to pass with higher than a D.
Grade is basically based on how well you do on the exams. Fun lectures and great guy but the tests are so hard. Two were online and two were inperson. Would recommend if you know how to study and really take information out of speaking lectures because he goes to fast and says answers rather than having them on the powerpoints
If no one answers his questions, he holds it against everyone by thinking you all know the answer. Gives good examples of what will be on tests, but speeds through them so it's hard to get it down in notes. Only grades are 4 tests, they're mostly short answer. final partially cumulative. Didn't personally meet , but came off as condescending.
I just took Prof Raab's Weapons of Mass Destruction winter session class and I highly recommend it. A great way to knock out a lab credit and the class was interesting and fairly easy. Not too much work and his lectures are interesting! He's a really funny guy too.
In the last day of his week-long WMD class and thought it was necessary to make one of these. TAKE THIS CLASS. 5 assignments all graded for completion basically and hour long class everyday for a week. Genuinely the easiest class I've ever taken and now I have my lab credit. Great guy, funny as well.
Would never recommend even to my enemy. Lectures/content were extremely difficult for a 100-level class. Basically self taught through the whole semester. Prof is rude too and when I talked to him was very pessimistic.
Graded on 4 exams, so if you're not a decent test taker he isn't a good idea. In his lectures he clearly states what you need to know for the test and if you go to class and put the work in you should get a decent grade. He's also very funny, extremely entertaining, and a great guy. If you don't struggle with tests definitely take him.
You won't pass this class. Do not take it.
Class has no relevance to IA majors.
Kind of feels like you're wasting his time in office hours, but very clearly states what he will and won't test on. Graded on 3 exams and a final, and everything is short answer. As long as you study what he tells you to it's not bad at all.
I only had this professor for the lab part of the class, but I don't know anyone in the lab class that enjoyed having him. He will not answer your questions, so expect to know everything before going into the lab, including technical use of equipment. It's not too difficult itself, so given that you turn things in on time, you'll definitely pass.
This professor just goes through slides and reads off them but is so funny. He made me want to go to class because I would miss the jokes if I didnt go. I recommend this class and this professor to all my friends. The tests are kind of hard but easy to pass with a little studying. I recommend this class to anyone
Not for IA majors, exams is basically your only grade and the exams are SO difficult. Never studied harder for a class more for chem and bio majors.
He is very knowledgeable in his work, but most times in his lecture he will go off on tangents that will not be on the tests. Being a good notetaker is the only way to pass. Mostly memorization and graded by 4 tests.
I took the 5 day winter ISCI class and it was great. He is a nice guy and explains things well. There are a few tasks to do each day but they don't take long and it is easy to get full credit. Zoom for 75 mins for 4 days, last day is fully asynchronous. SUCH an easy way to get your lab credit.
Took this class for my lab credit, the easiest class ever. Genuinely not stressful at all, I was still able to fully do everything I wanted on the days we had class. A short Zoom with thirty minutes of work after. It is genuinely interesting and valuable information as well. I will most likely end with a 100 in this class.
ABSOLUTE worst professor I've had. Constantly talks mid-lecture teaching us like the "good old days in the academy"(to belittle you) 100 class he treats it like 400. tests - all open-ended. Says he tells you the answers but doesn't. We had a sub review the the average was higher. Constant inappropriate remarks on alcohol dont know how JMU hired him
Class consists of 4 tests (multiple choice and written), a bunch of easy FEMA assignments, group project, and couple of easy random assignments. You could use the textbook for the online tests as well. The written portion of the tests did take a while to do but you have a week to do it. Raab's classes were always interesting and he is funny!
One of the worst professors I've ever had. Does not enjoy his job and his main goal every day is to get through his slideshows, does not care about actually teaching. Only study tool are 100 slide powerpoints.Don't ask questions because he specially states, he won't answer them, he will just point you to the 100 slide slideshows to find it yourself
Raab IS the worst professor at JMU, during the first class it was clear that he believed he was better then everyone and we should know everything In his class, this was a 100 level Gen-Ed class and acted like it was a 500 level graduate class. His slides are completely useless, He tests on 4 exams, if you miss 2 classes you loose 8% final grade.
Only grades are 4 exams, including a midterm and final. Lectures can be boring but you must go and pay attention if you want a good grade. Slideshows mostly only have pictures and he talks about them which is what you should write down. Not terrible if you pay attention and study.
Dr. Raab did amazing explaining dangerous agents that I never heard of before and historical events, and the class includes 4 FEMA certs. Very funny and his jokes are easy to remember. Exams are almost the whole grade, 4 in total, but he gives extra credit leeway by default. If interested in the material and study well for exams, you'll get an A.
I LOVED this class! It was so interesting, and we got FEMA certifications, which were incorporated into the exams. Dr. Raab makes lots of jokes to keep lectures fun and has a lot of interesting stories! You will need to attend lecture if you want to get a good grade in the class.
Loved this class! Never had class more than twice a week, tests were easy, and got a lot of FEMA certifications. Interesting class and funny professor. Make sure to show up to class (he can tell) and keep up to date on current events. Always start the essays early since they can take hours. Easy A if you try and the better 280 class in my opinion.
the worst professor ive ever had, never attends class and first exam had an average of failing throughout the class with no curve
Extremely disrespectful to his students, rarely shows up to class (has a sub) but makes class attendance mandatory, 4 exams for the entire grade, no curve, failing avg.
wont answer questions, if students are confused about a topic he will add more of those questions to the exam. wants you to fail
besides the typical attitude of being proud that most of his students fail his tests, he gets excited and says "this next test is going to be fun" whenever people don't answer his questions in class. Doesn't answer questions, instead asks class questions about the topic surrounding the question and then says "you should check your slides and notes"
You need to lock in, go to lecture, and take wonderful notes. There is nothing else besides the lecture. Grades are solely on exams and they are pretty fair to be honest. Again lock in. It is doable just don't be lazy.
DO NOT TAKE! won't respond to emails, won't answer questions in class and makes you feel stupid if you do, does not label notes and will not help you. Will give you a 0 for your work in the lab and not give you a reason. Worst professor, i have a 3.9 gpa and this is the first F i have ever gotten. You have been warned
made me feel dumb when i asked a question, kicked me out of class for drinking water. starred me down and told me hes going to try and make me fail. if this doesnt tell you enough about this professor then i dont know. these old good reviews are not accurate. class went from around 50+ students to maybe 20.
Worst professor. Extremely disrespectful. Does not care and wants everyone to fail. Save your life and don't take him.
had Raab for ISAT113. He was extremely rude and disrespectful to his students. Not only that, if you answer questions and get it wrong he makes you feel stupid about it. I was also kicked out of his lab when I drank water and he seemed very excited to remove me. I'd rather shove a hot sauce covered cactus up my rear then take his class again.
