If he was any more mellow, I might have to check for a pulse. but a good guy.
Class was a little boring, but learned quite a bit

Quite funny - and I learned quite a lot

He is really great at explaining issues and makes things more interesting.
A fine professor, would explain all concepts very clearly and didn't move too slowly. Very knowledgeable about current economic activity; was able to provide many great real-world examples to the topics covered.
Very easy, very nice... and EXTREMELY mellow

do NOT believe him when he says he only tests according to his notes... read the textbook!!!But otherwise, a good proff
HE WAS THE WORST TEACHER EVER!!!!!!!! He has no people skills and does not like helping people pass the class. He acuses people of cheating. He is NOT very approchable!
He teaches without any apparent attempt at being objective (tree huggers beware). He resists providing help outside of class. Tells stories of students who irritated him b/c they asked questions.
He's actually a teriffic lecturer, but as many others have pointed out, he's not approachable. Has very limited office hours, and doesn't like responding to questions. Good if you can listen and understand, but otherwise take 201/203 from Tracey instead.

he was one of the best profs i had, and i found him VERY helpful and approachable! he just doesn't like when you ask dumb questions... so don't!!! he's really smart and i really liked that he could connect theory with real world with examples.
pretty good. lectures are fairly boring, except for some good anecdotes.
I like him - the material is super easy and he tests what he teaches. I liked his dry, subtle humor. He often uses the pizza & beer analogy to teach econ which I found helpful considering that is a suject I'm very familiar with.
Horrible professor. Very boring lectures, hard exams, no help outside of class. Doesn't answer e-mail... Should be fired immediately.
Seriously knows his stuff when it comes to these courses. Very logical and precise note giving. You need to be able to memorize a lot to do well.
good,suggested
Yeah for Tom's House Pizza!
Good Instuctor. Everything is clear logical and sequencial. He covers a lot in each class so it's a good idea to spend 15 minutes reviewing after. You'll get your A, but you have to do some work. If you are left-leaning don't find a new prof find a new school.
I think he's good.
Perfect prof, perfect Option course: an easy A in a class where you still feel like you've learned something. He makes the best notes out of any prof I've had, they make learning the material a snap. Is very smart, and with his sense of humour the lectures are never boring.
AWESOME prof, the best ive had so far, very clear, very easy midterms( i got A- on both without studying whatsoever) taking his class at 630-9 next semester just because he is so damn good
Seems like a nice guy. Very smart, but I didn't enjoy him as a professor. Good grades are possible but I'm not impressed with all the notes and lack of teaching. He might as well sell a notes package and not hold lectures. Doesn't elaborate on crucial issues, then expects you to write an essay outsi
I thought only problem is he draws too many graphs and in the end I ended up with 20 graphs in a class and didn't really help me studying at all. His midterms are easy but final is competitive or little hard. He moves at average speed in class.
Schlenker was a pretty humourous professor...The midterms and final were quite straight-forward as he prepared a review sheet almost identical to the test...One downside of his teaching though are the lectures...He draws about 30 million graphs that mean nothing and isnt very explanatory.
He's OK. Not a nice guy - generally unapproachable and he mocks his students. The course itself is easy but it would have been better with another prof.
Good prof. Notes are great. Tells funny stories and goes on random (humorous) rants to make 8am class slightly more interesting (except for those that can't handle his sarcasm?). Midterms are easy (if you have the notes) but watch out for the final (which is a lot harder). Don't need 203 textbook.
Great prof, great notes, no BS on the tests, if u study the notes and understand them, you'll get an A in the class. Keeps class decently interesting
Good Sense of Humour.
Easy prof, just listen in lecture and take down all the notes, study those notes and write his practice exams, which are identical to those he will give on the exam. Easy A, the course is easy anyway. Highly recommended, just keep your eyes open in class can de dry at times.
The course is relatively easy. He, as a prefessor, is OK.
funny guy, class can be a little dry, too many graphs, does the best he can with the material he has to cover
I like him. He has a good sense of humor and definatly enjoys what he teaches. You can tell he takes a great interest in the economy and provides great every day examples in class. A cool down to earth guy. I recommend him for sure.
I got an A in this course because I put everything into my calculator. I've heard he changed this now. The course would be very hard without my calculator.
Hilarious. Easy tests provided you do the homework assignments.
Schlenker is the man! So funny. He mocks students which is always a bonus to attending lecture.
Reliable, detailed notes, easy assignments and the midterm is okay. Don't let that fool you though. The final was brutal!
Easy prof. Good examples. Easy class.
Schlenker is the man. If you email him, even with a serious/urgent/important request he will just reply with a simply 'no'. This class is brutal, infact while I was studying for the first quiz, I actually cried. No jokes, it was the first time I had cried in University. Taking 209 will also make you cry.
I don´t know what everyone is talking about but Schlenker is not a good prof at all. go with Tracey! not only is Schlenker not funny at all, he rambles on and on about things he feels strongly about, forces his opinions on us, plays boring movies when we could be finishing the class earlier and overall is just a boring prof. Go with Tracey!
his lectures were prettty dry but come on its economics, he knew his stuff really well and gave really good notes the midterm was easy and the final was harder but still not too bad it was an easy class i recommend him
i like.
A literal encyclopedia of economics. Knows ALOT and presents it in an organized manner. His angry little rants are awesome.
The best prof that i have
Tremendously entertaining lecturer. Clear, concise, and humourous.
Very thorough with his lectures, but makes light of some pretty boring situations with his beer and pizza analogies. He explains everything so if you don't know something it is probably in your notes. The test however, is somewhat harder than you would expect, so study!
The tests and assignments are laughably easy and there really is no need to go to class if you read the text. Has a set of notes that he transcribes to the overhead so get a friend to make you a copy. (There are a lot of graphs) However I went anyways to listen to real-life examples and his rants and raves. Overall a positive experience.
great prof...knows his stuff....nice guy...tests and assignments are NOT EASY but thats with every econ class...in the overall scheme of things take him...but talks a little too much about beer and pizza :D
Alright, so I'm a man, and a member of the conservative party.... but omg biggest man crush ever. I look forward to this class every other day, amazing prof and just fun stuff to learn.
Pretty easy class, no need to go to lectures. That's okay for a 200 level course, though I personally like to be better off for having paid a good chunk of money to be in the class. His rants can be funny, but he's REALLY ideological and doesn't even seem to know it. Not a good social scientist.
He a great prof.. definetly take him for 201 and 203
Pretty good prof. Made a super hard final probably because we had an average on the midterm of 87. Very clear and thorough.
Best teacher I've had all year. Extremely clear and notes given in the lectures are all you need for exams. Enthusiastic and makes it actually fun to go to economics classes. TAKE HIM!
I don't understand why everyone loves him. He is not a good prof. He is not approachable, his lectures are boring (they put you to sleep), and his test are unreasonable. He has essay tests, but is really only looking for one specific line. If you don't have that line, you don't get a good mark.
Epic prof; take him if you can.
Schlenker is easy for 200 level courses but beware when you get to senior level classes. His exams are really hard and require you to memorize the smallest details. Everyone in the class was upset with his final. He gives you a difficult mathematical questions on the final that differ from in-class examples. Don't take this course.
Enjoyed this class very much. Teaches well and has opinions that are interesting to listen to.
The courses that he teaches are very crucial to economic enthusiasts and he does a pretty good job at not crushing that interest in Economics. (side comment: He makes the impression that there's no hope for the 3rd world)
Interesting class, and one of the easier econ profs.
crystal clear notes, funny guy
Really easy prof for 203. Personally, I found his lectures a little boring, but he has very effective notes. And don't buy the textbook until you are studying for the final then return it! I didn't touch mine all semester.
Pretty good guy. Lectures can make you doze off at times. Favorite ork...mmmmmk
Good guy, great teacher only class i never got bored in. Really thorough but doesn't rush gives you every class he doesn't need to teach you off cant believe he doesn't have a 4.5 or 5 total
This prof is a nice guy, his lectures tend to be long and boring, but are still worth going to, overall a good prof
A very good prof, knows what he is talking about. However econ is a boring topic. Assignments and midterm were easy but the final was hard.
Yes, there are a lot of notes and a lot of info to get into your head. But he keeps it interesting, slams political parties, and makes it easy for you to get into the material. Just read over the notes A LOT and be able to explain the material in your own words, cause the final is all essay. I finished with 4 pages typed.
Amazing prof. Makes the course interesting, even when you're drowning in graphs. Stories are amusing and make the course easier to remember. The course moves quickly, so you better not miss a class, or else you'll be lost the next day. The final was harder than expected, but all around not to bad. Make sure you use the text.
The class is really boring, I found it really hard to sit through a 75 minute lecture. Midterm was fairly easily however the final was relatively hard. Overall, a good prof.
This guy is actually a good prof. He knows his stuff very well and you can just tell he loves economics cause he keeps talking forever NONE STOP! Lots of notes too. The assignments are a joke, midterm was easy but beware, the FINAL WAS HARD! And if you fail the final, you fail the course. The textbook is really easy to read too.
He knows economics and clearly has personal opinions on the issues. His tangents are well placed and kept me awake during the three hour lectures. His notes are concise and well organized.
Prof was horrible at responding to emails. emails normally took a week to get a response and leading up to a final that is unacceptable. Not very helpful in office hours either. other than that he was a decent prof.
Makes great detailed notes. Knows the material first hand and often makes side conversations that really enhance the material. I would take another class with this prof.
good notes. somewhat egotistical and this is reflected in the way her responds to student questions. I understand him wanting our respect, but that's a two way street.
anyone that doesnt rate him less than a five for easy is a fool great teacher easy class fun to listen to him rant and very good at explaining material just go to class and youll get a grade booster
Such an awesome econ prof! Notes are thorough and detailed and he always keeps you interested with his random stories and rants! Will definitely take another class with him!
Very good prof. I think I registered for his winter term course like, 3 classes in?
He was a good prof. His lectures were decent but I found it easy to start to drift off. He used a lot of acronyms which got out of hand. Other than that clear and easy to understand, good notes.
Entertaining and egotistical, so even though he uses the same lecture notes year after year, lectures are worth attending. The course contains a ton of information, so don't expect it to be a "gimme" course.
The midterm was so freaking easy....but the final was difficult..however..if u do well on the midterm and assigments...it is alright to mess up a little bit in the final
fantastic. most interesting class i had.
Honestly one of the worst profs i have ever had, there was no textbook to study from. Very rude when approached and never responds to emails, final was unfair. Would not recommend this prof for any higher econ classes
This class in general is so boring and lame. Midterm is a piece of cake, the assignments are really easy. Make a friend and compare answers. I went to the class less than 50% of the time and got a B. FINAL IS SO HARD. HE IS BORING BTW!
Without a textbook, extensive knowledge in this field is required to really succeed. He puts a lot of emphasis on trivial details, and you will be penalized disproportionately unless you are one of the two people who added that one particular seemingly insignificant detail. Can't wait for the exam, bet it will be stupidly hard..
Awesome notes and explanations and lectures. His rants are legendary and make the entire class. Aplia assignments aren't too hard, but final exam is a killer.
Class somehow boring, aplia answsers copy from tracy's class, exams got some tricky questions, 40 pages notes. if providing review classes like tracy dose, that will be prefect. Basically, a good prof
Was pleasantly surprised that economics turned out to be half-comedy. Though the concepts are fairly logical, listening in class is good for some epic laughs. Schlenker also does a good job of connecting concepts to real-life examples.
Very very funny! He makes his class very interesting with many real world examples. He is very enthusiastic and has lots of opinions and is very sarcastic which makes it more enjoyable! I think he is very charming and has a great sense of humor. He is the best prof I ever had, I have a crush on him!
When he teaches he might seem a bit egotistical, sarcastic and not very approachable. The first time I actually went to ask him a question he was quite rude...However I got to talk to him after class one day and I was wrong about my first impression he was very friendly, thoughtful and he was very interested in what I was doing, asking me lots of que
Class was not hard... structured notes, extremely easy midterm, final is NOT THAT HARD IF YOU UNDERSTAND THE CONCEPTS, but nonetheless a little confusing. Still, it's very possible to get an A, and while the textbook definitely complements the notes, it's not necessary to do well. Prof is knowledgeable about the subject and very opionated too.
He barrelled through the material so fast that we finished a week early. That was nice, except that it was way too fast to understand the content in class. I relied heavily on tutorials and the textbook.
Sexy witty and absolutely euphroic. This class can be very dry in terms of material. He makes it seem like a cool Discovery channel segment. You will definitely see ecnomics in a sassy new light ;). Very knowledgable and knows his material well.
Not very interesting, but you can't really blame him, he's teaching Econ... He does have some stories that keep your attention for a few minutes. Approachable, he can answer pretty much anything, notes are well put together, you can tell he's been to this movie before.
If you can get a copy of his previous years notes, DO IT! Sitting is class with this man is useless. He povides no help, no insight and is incredibly boring! Good luck on the final because he will not lend a hand! Hold out for another lecture!
classes are long and boring. I HATED the fact that he kept us 5 min late after every class to continue his lecture. Exam was based on class notes but alot of memorization for an economics course..not approachable and doesnot repond to emails!
This guy is hilarious. Always makes class interesting by using personal experience and humor to get his points across. He is not the most approachable guy out there, but i've had much worse. Midterm was very fair, but the final was surprisingly challenging, don't underestimate it. Overall great guy. Textbook is on Aplia so no reason to buy seperate
Professor had a tendency to pass his personal opinion off as fact. Rants were often self-serving and had a certain pre-rehearsed flavour as if they had been given last semester. Teaching is clearly a secondary supplement to his consulting business.
Really good. Made class very interesting
Schlenker was an excellent teacher and taught with a basic note taking style. Class attendance is necessary and if you have all the notes given throughout the year you don't even need to use the textbook. Has a tendency to rant on hot button issues that was entertaining. Also tends to finish the course early giving the remaining classes off.
Pretty much had to self teach myself the whole course. His notes are horrible cause each point is one or two words. Pick Tracey as your prof instead, even if you don't learn anything from him at least you get free answers for the final.
Good teacher, funny. He has a LOT of notes you have to take, and the exams depend on those notes not really the textbooks.
Notes are useless! Even if you come to class and listen to his lectures you won't get anything out of it. Midterm and final were pretty easy but than again I had to study alot to understand some of the more complex concepts.
His notes are very difficult to understand when you go through them after lecture, even if you take them word for word. He's not very approachable and tends to ramble on about something completely random for about 15 minutes at a time. I used a friends notes from 2 years ago and they were word for word identical Wasnt very passionate about teaching
great prof. easy to understand and many interesting anticdotes. his rants are always on topic. i wouldnt recomend taking his notes word for word-listen to what hes saying to write and youll have excelent notes. only flaw-i took 201 and 203 with him and he is deffinatly a micro person. he didnt do nearly as well with 203. 201 was excelently done.
I took a couple classes with him, and really have nothing good to say about it. He's one of the most unpassionate and monotone profs. Questions on midterms and finals were ridiculous. Do not copy notes off of board. You're way better off just writing down what he says.
Monotonous. Knows what he's talking about. I had to self-teach the harder concepts in course through the textbook. Midterm was easy, final was hard, but if you study hard for the final an A is not impossible.
Great prof!! Not monotonous at all I don't know what these people are talking about. Very enthusiastic actually! Funny rants and great examples. Definitely my favorite class of the semester.
VERY monotonous in his notes. You write for the whole class. Notes are not online and while you could probably just get notes from your book, going to class and taking his notes down is extremely helpful. Cracks a few funny jokes at time, answers all questions, and is a very good teacher overall. Easy HW and midterm
Schlenker's teaching style was one-dimensional: he wrote notes on the overhead. After each class you're left with a pile of insignificant notes, bewildered. And don't expect hints on exams: he neglected to help us because the class average was "too high." It was too high because a mass of students dropped the course after his absurd midterm! Avoid.
Good prof, but hard to keep up with all he says. Clearly he knows his stuff, and therefore never explains in as much detail as you would like. Great rants! Listen and if you can, tape the classes. I rewrote my notes after each class so I could read them, and studied the textbook. Loved this class and would definitely take a class with him again!
All we do in his class is take Notes. He hardly explained the graphs and on the midterm We got bombarded with graphs.
This professor knows his stuff. He goes on these rants, which can be pretty interesting at times. But for the most part, we copy down notes off a projector. It can become hard to focus. Midterm is easy if you study. Final is challenging, study hard!
His Final Exam will kill you! Brutal! I loved this class, but you really need to study on your own to have a full grasp on the concepts. He's smart, but goes through material too fast. Not accessible for help. I would take a class with him again, but be prepared to work! Not a grade booster!!!
Fantastic prof! I hardly had to study or review the notes at all throughout the year and I aced the midterm and online assignments. The final is tough so make sure you study for it a lot. But overall great prof who knows his stuff and is super interesting!
i didnt understand him at all. i only studied my textbook. More like married the book
I had this prof for both 201 and 203. There were A LOT of notes for every class and he rants too much that might be hard to focus sometimes. NEED to study the textbook(s) for the FINALS! Overall a fair prof!
The best Econ Prof! Very enthusiastic and very clear! Only - is all you do in class is taking notes, but these notes are gold and the only thing you need to get an A in the class! His Midterm and Final and challenging, but if you read the notes they are an easy A! I would definitely take another class with him, even a block week class preferably
Schlenker was an okay prof. He tends to rant a lot, and provide lots of examples regarding the oil and gas industry. Some funny comments. The midterm was very easy, HOWEVER, the final exam was a complete surprise as it was much more difficult.
He was pretty good, I really liked his lectures and he was pretty funny. He`s notes were really well organized and clear. Just becareful that the final is harder than the midterm.
amazing prof!!!
Cool prof. Lots of notes, funny stories/rants, but most importantly lots of real life experience in making business decisions in engineering. This man definitely knows what he's talking about. For tests, make sure to do as many of the old finals as he never changes the format of the exams.
Schlenker is easily the best prof I've had thus far. VERY easy to listen to and take notes for. His notes are very easy to follow and he is very good at making the course interesting. Provided you show up to class and take decent notes the midterm/final should be a breeze
Amazing prof, very easy to follow, knows his stuff, organized, entertaining, just attend every lectures and you'll receive an A
Schlenker is really good at what he does. He writes all his notes on the overhead (sort of old style, but still helpful) and he is easy to understand. The fact that the final is 50% is not great, but overall it was a great course and a great instructor.
I would really appreciate too ! if someone can give me the old finals and I will pay for them too if needed .Thanks !
It's easy to pay attention, and the notes he write is good, but it might not make sense if you didn't pay proper attention in class, His rants are funny. His midterm is easy, but his final is hard.
Schlenker ruled. He has an old school style of teacher which forces you to attend class - purely notes on an overhead. He keeps things organized in a way that makes them easy to study. Midterm was multiple choice and not that difficult. Final exam was pure written and tougher. Interesting course. Great prof.
He was okay ... it was a really boring class though. Notes weren't the best, so read the textbook. Assignments were relatively easy, as was the midterm. Final was on a completely different level though!
Make sure to go to class. Really good at explaining things and quite helpful.
Absolutely hilarious professor-not intimidating at all. moves very fast in lecture, expect 4-8 pages of notes per lecture on average. His stories are great and add a bit of flavour to a fairly dragged out class. The midterm is simple if you reviewed fairly comprehensibly, however the final is utterly different. HIT the textbook for the final!
Awesome prof. Great set of notes given each class. Reading the textbook just solidifies, and ties up loose ends. Attendance not mandatory, but if you miss a lecture read the corresponding chapter(s). Assignments easy, midterm easy, final was a lot tougher, but reviewing notes + reading each chapter at least once a A is attainable. Highly recommend.
Great prof, good teacher, writes his notes a bit quick but not a huge thing. Into the material, not too hard.
Despite what everybody says, this course is not easy. He pretty much talks the entire lecture, so basically you can either take notes or listen, not both. The final was kinda brutal, and he didn't mark it easy either.
Love his rants, really amazing prof and made me love both intro courses. His midterm is pretty easy if you study notes and do the practice one. The final left me a little out of water because there was no practice ones of his to be found. Overall amazing, wish he taught more econ courses.
Fantastic guy. Very exciting to listen to. He made econ that much easier.
Not bad at all.
He was a good prof and funny. Couldn't help us much because his class was huge.
funny at times but I didn't understand any lecture after the midterm and the final WAS HELL.
If you go to class and take notes, you won't ever need a textbook. Lectures are interesting.
Very funny and intelligent prof. The course started out quite easy, but got more difficult after the midterm. The stories he tells in class are always relevant and shake up classes that would otherwise be a bit mundane.
Good prof, has nice stories to accompany boring class material. Class was pretty easy until the final. The final had a lot of puzzling questions. Overall good prof though.
awesome prof, hilarious and has tonnes of relevant stories to accompany the material! very fair tests...writes notes in class, and are not posted so attendance is necessary
AWFUL!!! absolutely brutal prof he is so rude and unwilling to help, I actually had to go to one of my different Econ profs for help in his class. If you aren't an Econ major I would not recommend this class its a lot of math and graphing for a 300 level. Class was so boring, 3 hours has never felt so long and notes were so random and useless.
He is very knowledgable and his notes are quite helpful. The only thing is that they are very general, so you really have to go to class as he doesn't post them anywhere. His midterm and final are quite hard, but he gives you the information. His practice midterms and finals are similar to the actual ones.
I had Schlenker for 201 and 203. I'd agree that he's more passionate about 201 but I thought 203 was fine too. I love his rants and if you listen in class and take good notes you should do well on the exams. Not an "Easy A" class but it's Econ so you SHOULD be working at it to properly understand the concepts. Really enjoyed the class.
He's a little tougher that other Econ profs at U of C but you learn a lot more in his class. Very interesting guy who goes on rants about current events fairly often (in a good way).
Final exam was very tough. You gotta memorize every bits of detail from the 2nd half of the course. If you can do that, you will ace the final. Do not focus only on the sample final questions, because he will give you surprises.
Far too many notes, doesn't post them on Blackboard. Every class is a minimum of four pages of notes, hard to digest and remember all the information. Very rigid and inflexible if looking for some assistance as he paints all students with the same brush. Class was very boring.
Midterm was pretty easy. Final exam destroyed us. He told us the final would be easier than the midterm, but it wasn't. The final was worth 50% and it was one of the hardest exams I've ever written. Oh and he doesn't post notes on blackboard, so that kinda sucks.
Super guy with relevant experience that he shares in the classroom. He is old school with the notes on an overhead and they can be lengthy but if you put in effort, you will get results. He is challenging but completely fair and there is no reason to get a disappointing grade from him. Find out for yourself.
Worst prof I've ever had, I will never ever take him again. Asked to see my midterm out of curiosity and was brushed me off with the excuse that it wasn't relevant anymore. Has the most annoying nasally voice, doesn't stop talking and has millions of pages of notes to take and memorize. Rarely answers emails, very slow at marking
Looks like Mr. Garrison off south park, worst prof ever, never to be taken again.
Schlenker was my favorite of intro profs. He knows his stuff. Well organized, VERY opinionated, but makes for great lectures; as stimulating and theatrical as it gets. Approachable, very happy to answer questions, the only downside for some might be that notes are in class and on an overhead, and his conservative views. Ron's an excellent choice.
By far my favorite econ professor. He explains concepts in a way that makes it easy to understand. His lectures are interesting and he is easy to listen to.
He's a decent prof. Knows the subject well and he has some entertaining rants, but I found his notes and lectures to be disorganized and hard to follow. He talks the entire length of the class while writing his notes very quickly on an overhead projector. I often found myself scrambling just to keep up with his notes. Opinionated, but a smart guy.
I enjoyed Schlenker's lectures, especially when he went on rants. The midterms are pretty easy but the final is difficult and can drop your grade. All notes are written by hand, so attendance is mandatory!
Knowledgeable professor, a bit too opinionated. All notes are hand written, so attendance is mandatory. Final exam is hard. He goes occasionally on rants. Make sure to write down anything relevant to microeconomics that is mentioned in the rants, it will likely be on an exam.
He seemed more into the subject when he taught ECON 201. Still very knowledgeable and very opinionated. Make sure to attend class as there are no posted notes, study very hard for the final exam and memorize some of the numbers regarding the fiscal balances of the provinces, they will be on exams.
Huge beauty love the way he taught 201, made it very interesting and notes are very useful. Always related topics to real life
He would often go on weird tangents that didn't relate to class and I felt like he progressively lost his mind a little bit more every class though the duration of the semester.
I thought his rants made the class more interesting and they applied to real life. I don't like ECON, but I enjoyed it with him. The final was a killer, but otherwise, he's a really nice and helpful guy. I was scared after reading some of the views here, but after taking the class, I'm glad I did. Assignments related to the topics which was good.
He isn't a bad prof, but he can be confusing. Must attend lectures, as he does not post notes, and they are handwritten. Midterm was easy, study hard for the final. Don't take the three hour class at night. You will regret it.
The class isn't bad and going to lectures is necessary. He explains concepts well. Assignments are easy and midterm was good but FINAL IS HARD. Make sure to study well for final. He doesn't have sufficent office hours and hard to have a good timing to ask him questions so use drop in tutorials if you are enrolled with him
He is an amazing prof! Not to helpful outside of class as he does not have many office hours but he explains concepts clearly in class. Midterm and two assignments were simple but the final was brutal.
Does not post any notes on BB so you must go to class for the three hour lectures. You write notes the entire time so I found the class really boring. The final is all written and for the final and midterm you have to remember a ton of facts.
Schlenker does not really teach the material. Rather he just reads out his notes with little explanation. However, his notes were very helpful for quizzes/exams. The material is not too difficult, but the proper amount of time needs to be spent. All his exams are very similar year to year so by doing old exams its possible to achieve a good mark.
Very opinionated, I found him hard to listen to but the midterm and assignments were fairly easy, final exam was absolutely brutal!!
Terrible prof. The midterm is easy but the final is a killer, you have to remember a ton of notes and then write 4 short essays, 1 calculation question. His class is so boring, just write down everything he writes and too hard to follow him.
Schlenker makes the lectures interesting and gives lots of industry applicable examples to the concepts. He gives really great, straight-forward notes, and as long as you put in a little effort, you will be fine.
Schlenker gives extremely detailed notes in class, but I would recommend supplementing his written notes with what he talks about verbally. The class should be pretty easy if you are interested in economics. He's a good prof but he brags and name drops a lot which I found annoying.
Great professor if you like his style, otherwise do yourself a favor and avoid at all costs. Very polarizing, however is insightful and does know his stuff about the industry. Also, watch out for all he says as he is pretty much the book for the class.
Terrible prof ever.
Sick prof. I could listen to him talk forever, he keeps it interesting and uses real life examples. He made impossible to fail. I was legitimately sad when his class ended.
Schlenker is a beauty... i took his class for econ 201 and 203 and its sad that I'm not in his class anymore. The two assignments are so easy and the midterm and final are pretty easy too. His tests are 100% on the notes, i didn't even buy the textbook. Just take notes, pay attention, and study... its pretty simple
Taken ECON 201 and 203 with Schlenker - Very opinionated and pushes his views, but great, knowledgeable prof. Easy assignments, no need to purchase textbook if you attend class. Highly recommended
Difficult to follow, condescending when questions are asked. Midterm was ok but he has ridiculous expectations for final and assignment. Avoid.
Great Prof! I really learned a lot in this class and would take another with him. He has opinions but he always backs them up and is very willing to answer questions from students
Stereotypical Uni prof, he writes everything on an over head and expects you to remember everything he wrote. Midterm is multiple choice, Final is everything after midterm and all written (long). He doesn't give a review because you need to know everything he has said. His classes have identical formats, easy to predict for future tests.
Schlenker has been in the oil & gas industry for a long time. He is very experienced and he knows his stuff well. Good prof.
Teaches at a good pace and holds your attention. I really enjoyed coming to his lectures! He did a good job of putting the material in context. Tests and assignments were pretty easy. I wish I could have had him for 203 as well.
Teaches at a good pace and engages your attention. Tests and assignments are dependent on how much you are willing to study. Put some work in and you should get a decent mark. Likes to go on rants, but it makes the class entertaining.
Probably my favorite prof. The mans a genius and usually keeps class interesting with a mix of lecturing and rambling. He loves to talk about how useless the Liberals are, and relate economic principles to his favorite pizza joint (Tom's House of Pizza). The assignments are easy with answers available on Google, and the tests require basic studying
Schlenker was a great prof. I took ECON 201 in the summer as an elective and i'm so glad I did. This class was an early class during the summer and I did not skip a single lecture. He goes through the course quick but clear so that he has time to tell you his opinion on the world... and about his cat. I had to shake this guy's hand at the end.
He's pretty good. His lectures are fast-paced and he writes lots of notes (you may want to take them by hand or have a drawing program handy on your device of choice; he loves graphs). Uses good real-world examples to help you understand better. Very right-wing and likes to express his opinions in class, so be prepared for that.
Frustrating how he doesn't have more resources available online or practice questions before tests
I took his ECON201 course in Summer 2015 and found it be quite good. The pace was fast, but the difficulty level was reasonable, and the midterm and final were both fair. Everything needed for an A was in the textbook or covered in class. Really funny guy and was responsive and helpful when I would ask questions.
Ron is hilarious. He is super knowledgeable and he will keep you engaged, even while going over dry material. I would definitely recommend him
The course was straightforward and fairly easy, especially before the midterm. Schlenker is easy enough to understand. He can rant about politics sometimes, but it actually gives some good variety to the lectures.
He uses an overhead projector for most lectures. He moves at a reasonable pace and restates his notes verbally which helps both visual and auditory learners. Sometimes he goes on tangents and makes sarcastic remarks about political figures which is absolutely hilarious. He speaks very truthfully about the difficulty of your exams for the course.
Loved Schlenkers class. Good lecturer, makes the content easy - I recommend adding some of what he says in class to the notes that he writes as they make sense in class but when you look back they can appear abbreviated and vague. Midterm is cake, final was incredibly hard - it is very note specific to his class, so attend class after first midterm
He teaches well, lectures are fun, energetic, and he talks about politics a lot, but incorporates them into the subject sometimes. His midterms are pretty easy, but the final was really really hard. No Tophat, and you do your assignments through mindtap. The assignments are pretty decent. He used the old style overhead for notes.
Awesome prof, very insightful. Keeps lectures interesting by tying in alot of political banter. Articulates points well with relevant and easy to grasp examples. Ive taken a couple courses with him and would take them again in a heartbeat!
Great prof! Really clear and writes out the notes on the projector so no real need for the textbook (so, I highly recommend attending the lectures for his content). Lectures are awesome because he's very engaging and goes at a semi rapid pace (so you're sort of forced to listen to get good notes).
Great Prof! Organized and engaging, he does tend to rant a bit--which is hilarious--but he never lets his rants get priority over teaching. All the material tested on is covering in class.
Rants are great, tests and assignments are straightforward
He is an alright prof. Classes are really boring though, I almost fell asleep in a few of them. He does go on rants which are kinda entertaining, but there are better profs out there.
I personally did not benefit from his class - his teaching style is writing on an overhead. This is useful for some people but I felt like I hadn't learned anything after each class because I was so focussed with writing all the content down. Doesn't post anything on D2L so attendance is mandatory. Only 1 midterm and 2 assignments plus the final.
His notes are very straight to the point and there are a lot of concepts he covers in the lectures. The notes are not posted online so you have to attend the lectures. Lectures are engaging, he uses real life examples and goes on rants which are pretty hilarious. His assignments and midterm are pretty fair so was the final. Studying is a must.
It's been said time & time again that Tracey is the Econ God, but let me tell you something. Schlenker has snatched the crown. His lectures are note heavy BUT the tradeoff is worth the time he puts Justin Trudeau on a tee and blasts him into the stratosphere. Tough final, easy midterm. I've dragged out my degree two years to continue class with Ron
It is sometimes hard to keep up with the lecture. Great prof, he clearly knows what he is talking about. He rants, which keeps the class entertaining and memorable.
Absolutely one of the best professors I've had in my university career, I've attended both UofA and UofC. If only all professors could explain concepts in a way that stick in student's brains like Dr. Ron. Really hope he's teaching something next semester so I can take his class again.
basically he pulls out a projector and writes notes. We usually write maybe 3-ish pages of notes per class. Pay attention to his lectures
Ron is a great guy, always strolls in right at the bell and starts off by writing on the overhead projector. You would think is a boring prof, but 20 minutes into the lecture you're busting a gut because he's got another funny story vaguely related to the topic. Tests are very fair, try not to miss a lecture and you will succeed.
Ron has an amazing way of teaching you material, then ranting about his personal opinions on the material he just taught and how he feels it applies to the real world. Keeps the class engaged, excited and awake for the duration.
I like him because I agree with the majority of the things he says as a conservative. I enjoy his rants the most, they're at least educated. Really knows whats up for energy courses. His tests can be a little tricky if you don't study right but they're still very fair. I find his midterms usually more difficult than the finals.
I personally enjoyed his class and especially his rants. With this course you will learn a lot and his anecdotes are useful for exams. Keeping in mind I had a 3 hour class, he was able to keep as all engaged and active which was refreshing. Do not skip his class as not notes are posted and go to tutorial. (Effort Excellence) :)
Ron made econ my favourite subject, his lectures are absolutely amazing, and his rants are hilarious. His notes are extremely well laid-out, and easy to study from. My only complaint is that he doesn't post lecture notes online, but it's not a big deal as you will want to attend each and every lecture regardless.
I loved the class because of my prof, he has a very unique and wonderful way of teaching, and he is very passionate about teaching. He does a wonderful job. I can't wait to take his Macroeconomics class.
Pretty good made class interesting for the most part
Great professor, midterm super easy, final was tough.
At first I was worried if I would like him, but he turned out to have a good sense of humor and he rants about things. Lectures can be dry, but only because he gets right into what needs to be covered. He uses a projector and writes notes during class which worked well for me. It's too bad we are graded by only a few things..
Chill and laid back prof, just needs to ease up on telling stories from his life or his motorcycle adventures. Also, he takes every single minute of the lecture, meaning if your class ends at 10:45, he will finish at 10:45 but sometimes he will finish early. Also, he is generous on giving us days off so look forward to that cuz i got 2 days off. Overall, hes funny and theres going to be lots of notes!
Great prof. Makes class fun and engaging. As long as you go to class and pay attention you will be prepped for his exams.
Before Ron is Gone take his class. Be aware he is prehistoric nature. P.S:he doesn't have a cell phone. Just kidding he is a great prof, great lectures, study and you will do good but his finals are super brutal.
Ron is the man! I wouldn't take economics with any other prof. He's funny and very straight forward. You know what you're getting with Ron, no fine print. Go to class and study your notes for the tests and you're golden!
Schlenker is an interesting prof for sure. He writes all his notes on a projector, so attendance is pretty much mandatory unless you want to be reading your textbook a lot. Lectures aren't THAT exciting but he keeps it interesting with his off topic rants every once and a while. Final is quite hard, so do good on the midterms.
SUPER note heavy, at least 5+ pages per lecture. Kept the material interesting, but there was just so much of it, it makes it hard to know whats relevant and what isn't. Class wasn't that bad, midterm was straight forward but the assignment and final were brutal.
Its odd that I learned more about how our political/finance/society works in an economics class but Ron made it happen. A Luddite by nature, there is no online notes so show up for his clear notes, awesome lectures and hilarious rants. Don't bother with the text. Very clear outline/tests/assignments. Arguably the best prof I have had to date.
He's super chill and easy going but not the best when explaining concepts during his lectures. gets out of topic a lot and really kind of strict when it comes to marking. I don't recommend taking him.
Loved his classes! His rants are both highly entertaining and give real insights into the interconnectivity of economic and political matters. I wouldn't recommend for the easily offended because he gives you his unvarnished opinion. Can pass course on text readings alone, but his lectures were worth attending.
Ron was amazing, absolutely hilarious. Make sure to take a class with him during any kind of political thing, you won't regret it.
Very fun class, attendance is mandatory as he does not post anything on D2L. Super funny and chill, taking his 203 class too! Explains everything and takes his time to make sure you understand. Rants are pretty funny but can get a bit annoying if he goes on for too long. 10/10 would recommend!
He wont post any of the lecture materials on D2L which is why you mostly would have to go to the lectures. The rants are pretty funny, however in a 3 hour lecture sometimes it is hard to catch up.
Very Knowledgeable and entertaining.
Avoid him if you can. Awful handwriting, never update D2L, never post notes online. Feel so helpless everyday. No practice problems, no practice exams. Tell students to find old exams by themselves but there is no answers.
Schlenker is hilarious, and beyond knowledgable. His lectures are super informative. He is passionate about his material and very opinionated, but his rants and tirades always have a practical and educational subtext to them. Schlenker has made the course one of my favourites. FYI there is only one midterm and two, easy assignments, and the final.
Good, Prof. Sometimes hard to understand his handwriting. sometime hard to follow because we don't show his steps
This man is so hilariously opinionated, I cant get enough of it. Solid, easy to follow lectures although he can rush sometimes. Highly recommend.
Schlenker is one of the best profs I've had. HIs rants get me up in the morning for his class. Don't take if you are a triggered liberal, because he tells the truth quite a lot.
He is a good prof and his lecturers are very hilarious and entertaining! But he doesn't put any of his notes online and they are all hand written in class. His notes are also very disorganized and his graphs are hard to follow.
Ron Schlenker is an amazing prof! His rants make the class more enjoyable and he just made econ really interesting for me. I loved how he spoke his opinion about everything and did not care who he offended. His notes are great and the class is not that hard but you do have to review and stay updated. I would definitely take his class again!
Ronald is an insanely amusing guy who make lectures an absolute blast with his constant rants against liberals and his general distrust of anyone in authority. He doesn't post notes, so attendance is mandatory, but attendance is worthwhile given what you learn and how much you laugh. Slightly annoyed an A+ was set at 98 though, that seems too high.
The beginning of the course is very straight forward, but after the first and only midterm the course material gets a lot harder. The assignments and midterm were very easy but the final was hard. Schlenker is a hilarious prof with tons of rants, but towards the end of course I wish he explained concepts more than ranting.
He does make lectures more interesting with his enthusiasm in the field. Put a little work outside of class and you'll do fine. No hard assignments but don't let that fool you for the final. Lots of material after midterm and not much work to do during the term, makes you put the class on the back burner which you can not do. Teaches it very well.
Goes off topic a lot but if you just do the notes and look at the practice problems you'll be good. Tutorials aren't worth going to. Skipped every class and learned the whole course in 3 days in the final exam break and got A-, not a hard class.
Great prof.. Very passionate about Econ and very funny which makes classes engaging. He also does not post notes so go to class!! There were two assignments and a midterm that were pretty simple, but the final was 100 questions and quite difficult. Make sure you put in a bit of effort outside of class and you will be fine.
Schlenker is a really nice guy but goes off topic for the most of every class. Goes so fast you cant even keep up with the notes. Ended up not going to class and just using the textbook! Aced the 1st mid term as it was all textbook. Final was not fair at all. Wether you used the textbook or lecture notes the final was way too hard.
very funny guy, goes off topic a lot and constantly rants about his hate for Trudeau also very passionate about Econ. he doesn't put his notes on D2L since he uses an overhead and sometimes his notes are difficult to read. there was 1 midterm as well as 2 take home assignments and they were fairly easy, but the final was dreadful so
He is gets very excited about economics and genuinely enjoys teaching, he tends to rant about stuff not related to the course material; but keeps the class interesting. The assignments and midterm is easy, but the final is worth 50% and is super hard compared to the rest of the material. Try to switch your prof if possible, but otherwise study hard
Schlenker, what can I say? Well, he covers all the material that you will be tested on in class, so go to class. The textbook was helpful to re-explain confusing topics and help with the assignments. His lectures are always a joy to attend since he goes on so many interesting, hilarious tangents- that somehow relate to the course material.
He was a great prof when I showed up. Funny and taught the material thoroughly. Unfortunately he doesn't post ANYTHING on D2L and writes all of his notes on paper. I was at an A after the easy midterm and assignments, stopped going to class, and the final exam was VERY heavy on the near-end material. Go to class and you should be fine
Rants. Alot. Very funny guy, good lecturer and kept you entertained on otherwise very boring content. He writes all his notes by hand. Posts nothing on D2L. Assignments are easy, midterm was easy, final was extremely difficult and not like midterm at all. Go to class and you should be fine!
The assignments and midterms are easy but does not prepare you for the final. Ron gives out a practice midterm but doesn't give out a practice final (why??). Instead, links us to exam bank where you pay for a 2007 practice exam, which many have said is not similar to his final. He doesn't explain concepts in lectures in depth enough for the final.
His rants are just as I expected from reading previous reviews here. Entertaining and great lecturer. His notes are good - sometimes a little vague. Textbook is a must IMO. Warning: SUPER EASY assignments and midterms but VERY HARD final. READ THE TEXTBOOK. His notes alone will not prepare you for the final. Overall, tough final but a fair course.
Schlenker is super passionate about politics, rather than economics. Spent most of the lecture ranting. Ended up not going to lectures after the first assignment. Your textbook is your best friend. Did not study from any of his notes, and still aced the assignments/midterm. Final is a little trickier than the midterm but still fairly easy.
Spent most of the classes i actually attended listening to him rant. The guy uses an overhead projector and writes all his notes by hand throughout the lecture. His notes are very vague so save yourself time and just read the textbook and youll do fine in the class. Hes also not a very approachable guy, but the class overall isnt that difficult.
The funny capitalist. Funny cause he speaks his mind, even when not always politically correct. But on the real. high quality lectures, engaging and informative.
Hilarious lecturer, his notes are readable although he uses an overhead projector to write his notes which can be a little annoying. If you're a slow note taker, prepare to be copying down notes for the majority of the lectures, he does go on little political rants which can be an opportunity to catch up on note taking. Reading the textbook helps!
Really enjoyed his lectures, always funny and insightful, if a little right wing for my taste. I strongly recommend taking classes with him, he's very clear and well spoken.
Hilarious, and rants about the ridiculous budget and ideas presented by the liberal and NDP government. Great guy and makes classes interesting
Class is easy, it's related to my major though so take that with a grain of salt. THIS PROFESSOR THOUGH WAS HORRENDOUS. Wastes class time by ranting about the liberals and NDP. All of which is just him yelling to the class about the government and how flawed our country is. His notes are on a projector and his handwriting is near impossible to read
Do not fall for his high rating like I did- he marked us on TWO things & final worth 50% which isn't rare for an Econ course. He doesn't post lecture notes online, probably because he knows that if he did then no one will come to class!!! You can't even absorb what he says because u are too busy jotting down all his notes..
Fair midterms and final but doesn't post practice finals or solutions. Honestly thought Schlenker explained some concepts better than the textbook. If you go to class and tutorial you can do well as long as you can read graphs and do math. Found him pretty funny when he talked about his "dislike" for NDP and Trudeau policies.
I honestly cannot comprehend how any of the comments for ECON325 are positive. He spends a lot of class time describing oil history, while it never appears on the midterm, assignment, or final. His mid-term/final review is essentially useless, and the math portion of the final is much, MUCH more difficult than the assignment. Good luck.
You skip class, you won't pass. You go to class, you probably still won't pass. Lecture notes are all written by hand, so there is no power points. The lectures don't really relate to the assignment/exams. The dates/timeline is largely unimportant, like actually, don't study the dates. If you have to take this class I'm sorry, so very sorry. GL
Prof Schlenker is a nice and funny man, obviously likes politics. Thats what I got at most from that class, you can do without the lectures so far you study the textbook religiously and dont wait till the last minute to study for the finals because it is much tougher than the midterms. Other than that youll be fine.
He was an okay prof. Talked lots, going off topic most often about politics. Notes were a little helpful but textbook was more useful than him. Doesn't post lectures online. Tutorials and assignments helped a lot. Final was not fair at all. Lectures were hard to get through.
Chill professor, read the textbook and you will be fine!
