*sigh* not my favourite prof... he talks to us like we're in kindergarten
He's excited about teaching the class, although he's kinda wacky
No Comments
he does talk to us like we are in kindergarden...but he's funny at least..
enjoyable
Best teacher i have had so far, love how he teaches
cool. funny jokes, good notes, kinda loopy sometimes-good explainations though
good teacher, a little nutty though
...the guy cracks me up
MR. NEURON
I don't know how, but he managed to keep my attention without anything sticking
funny guy but i spent most of the classes doddling away
Tests aren't too bad, but he confused me so much during lectures
Good Prof - a little dull @ times, his notes make up for what you doze thru!
His attitude is rude and snobby; his tests are unorganized and stupid!!!!
He's good. Keeps it interesting
Organized, Tries to keep it interesting-PINKY AND THE BRAIN
Really good teaching skills, tests were fair and his notes well organized.
Best professor ever, he is a god of neuropsych, and so cute!
Great Prof, but FITB test Q's are way too word specific.
Very hard tests!!! It doesn't matter how hard you study...it's all luck!
awesome notes, fair tests, nice guy
Ok prof, knows his stuff, but when I emailed him for help he wrote back a very rude note, and didn't give me help. Made me feel dumb.
best biopsyc prof at UVic. 215--easy...323--must study harder and longer...tells you what you need to know...encourages discussions..don't bother w/ Bain
He's a lot of fun in class and does a great impression of a rat.
very organized prof but gives very little explanation of concepts, just tells you what pages of text to read...not approachable or encouraging.
Awful teacher. Spends half class apologising for dumb jokes he's made, and makes you feel stupid if you ask a question. Take bain, at least she's great to talk to
mixed feelings-wandering, disjointed notes, knows his stuff, hard to talk to, distasteful jokes-preoccupied with sex
Brilliant prof, but VERY hard to approach. For sure a hard course with him.
EVIL DEVIL MAN. His last test was impossibly hard. 1/4 people in the class failed. He is very unwilling to help if you need it.
very good teache, fair tests if prepared. Regrding last comment1/4of class failed that is not that much some classes such as biochem 300 had 60% of class fail, welcome to the real world!!
If I didnt have background in topics i would be lost. I feel sorry for those who dont. Test Q's are ambiguous. Acts like he knows more than he does
Very hard to follow.

You wanna know the secret to getting an A in this course? 1. Never ever miss a class. 2. Always (and I mean always!) read ahead before coming to the class.
He's a chump. I am doing good in the class, but leave every lecture frusterated at his lack of knowledge...I'm not sure he's ever properly answered an inclass question? Also, I am put off by his jokes, many of which have sexual undertones. Gross!
this course is VERY hard, and fast paced....if you dont have previous biology knowledge be weary about taking it!....
Should stop teaching and start writing tests for ICBC.
Does this man know anything?? I find alot of the time that he doesnt really know what he is talking about and his sexual inuendos and rediculous ananlogies to be very unhelpful and quite disturbing. He makes an interesting topic dreadfully boring!
This man doesn't know anything about the material and is ruining the subject.
cant tell if he's teaching biopsych or a grade 4 science class worst teacher ever!!!!!
If I ever meet anyone else with worse bedside manner, I will lose all hope I ever had for the human population. He's nice in class but it's just a front to get good evaluation at the end of the yr b/c out of class he's a miserable malicious man.

Some of his trick questions make you feel like: "What is the point in studying?" Sometimes there are right answers but sometimes even better answers. Arghhh!
Read the text, summaries and know the diagrams and you should be okay. Corny jokes, but whatever. You can get by with a B if you study.
Good teacher in class, but don't surprise him with a question he's not expecting, he'll be hard pressed to give you the right answer, and DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT go see him after class. He is a ferocious bitter man who will attempt to bite your head off.
Worst - cannot teach, not familiar with his own subject matter, not good at answering questions in class, difficult to approach during office hours (malicious). Disorganized lectures - trivializes important data - gets muddled. Trick questions.
I like Dr. Skelton's jokes, even thought they are corny. As for him getting "muddled" we are all human and make mistakes too, plus no one (including PhD's)specializes in every single area of psychology.
TAKE THIS CLASS WITH SOMEONE ELSE! His tests are ridiculous...it seems hes more interested in tricking you then making sure you understand the material.
Tests are ridiculously hard - you can study and study and study and still barely scrape by. DON'T see him in his office hours - very unapproachable. Doesn't respond helpfully to questions via email either.
make sure you do all homework assignments for the tests, and do not see him in office hours he will ripe your head off, very mean outside of class
Brutile tests! When you go to write a test you are always second guessing yourself. If you don`t have a good memory DO NOT take the class. Also he is paranoid of cheaters, so don`t erase to much or you might be questioned for cheating.
Very hard tests, the questions do not test concepts, they test your them. Overall the class was good. Do not approach him after class or through e-mail... very snarky.
He is a horrible man!His goal is to trick you in tests. Treats students like crap out of class.Tells irrelevant/innapropriate jokes ALL the time!!!!

OH man he is such a bad prof. I really wish I could go back in time and take 215 w/another prof!
I HATE him. He does explain things thoroughly, answers questions BUT HIs tests ARE IMPOSSIBLE, picky guy, Like the other person said, you could study your head off and you might still end up barely passin his tests. Get somebody else to teach u 215.
I was really looking forward to this course, before I had him....he has ruined psych for me for good. The tests are very difficult and Im in my fourth year of biology!!!!!!!Dont take this course with him if you can avoid it.
I've never had a professor who made snarky comments about students not spending 5 hours linking words together for homework. Took things too personally and took WAY too long to return tests.
Tests are quite difficult. MC and fill in the blank. Easy to cheat in class...shhh. You need to study the bolded words. His jokes are funny to some...
Those notes are freaking ridiculous. If you can get through all the numbers, subnumbers and subletters there may actually be something worthwile... but probably not. He is very difficult, but that's not why I hate him. avoid!
ambiguous tests! thinks hes funny-isnt! extremely unclear lectures and notes.
If you read this Professor Skelton...the _____ is _____ and your tests are _____. Does that make any sense to you? If it doesn't, then why would you design your tests this way? If any of you have the option, take biopsych with any other teacher.
Again, the FITB questions are a little ridiculous at times, but I found the notes to be quite useful. His examples were terrible, but as long as you ignore them and keep up with readings, it all makes sense. Only harsh when students had stupid questions.
Not hard to succeed in his class if you read text and show up to lectures. He teaches and tests major concepts, not details, so you have to know the material.
i've had him for all possible bio psyc courses, and if he was SO bad, i wouldnt have taken the courses. he's a smart guy, and even though he is a slow marker, he tries to be fair about what he messes up on. oh yeah, and he's actually a pretty nice guy.
He was very rude to one girl in particular right in class, seems kind of spiteful. If he starts making analogies, cover your ears. Fill in the blanks are ridiculous at times, but the rest is ok.
Worst! Does not think well, disorganized notes, sloppy. Often rude to individual students. A psych prof - knows how to "manage" mass opinion. A good reason why UVic ranks lowest in Cdn universities.
worst
Cannot be worse than this.
This prof knows his subject very well, and what he doesn't know, he will research. He's not the best at answering the class' questions, but many of the questions were dumb and asked 8 times. The tests are a bit more detailed than he suggests, but not bad
This prof is not helpful, he's rude, makes analogies that make no sense. And when you sit in his classes you tend to drift away because he talks about stuff that is irrelavent and is boring as hell.
This man turned an enjoyable and interesting course into a mockery. I did not learn anything. if you have a class with this man drop it!
Boring and difficult. Took this class as an "easy" elective, turned out to be the hardest one I had. Need to spend HOURS on material to do well. He's sooo paranoid about people cheating on tests too-it's crazy.
Definition of was a horrible teacher is. How this man has managed to keep his job still amazes me. We had so many people complaining he made us "elect" 3 people who would complain on our behalfs...AVOID AT ALL COST!!
I agree with every negative statement below! Plus, I actually know 2 people he has made CRY. Take this class with anyone else that you can if you're in university to have a positive experience instead of just cramming info in!
Tests were totally unfair, the material was extremely difficult and his study guides didn't seem to help AT ALL! I studied my butt off and got a B-...and I consider myself lucky!
He made ME cry too (seriously)! I know someone else he also made cry. So we're up to four people he made cry. Anyone else? I assume that he thinks other professors make their students cry. He has no human capacity to care. It's sad. He needs a hug.
What! Is he still there! In spite of all the bad reviews and negative prof. evaluations? Year in and year out - the worst blight on campus and still administration will not make him disappear!
I think he's great. he's funny enough it doesnt get boring and he has great analogies to keep it easy to remember things.
Gonna go against the grain here, but I think he's fantastic. Tests are hard BECAUSE they actually test knowledge of course material, unlike in other classes. Lectures are clear and effective, if you keep up in readings and attendance.
His classes are tough but he tells you what is important. Also, gets you to think for yourself -this is difficult at first but worth it in the end. Rather have this kind of prof than someone who 'spoon feeds' you.
There's no H in Okay. Right?
What more do you people want? Tells you exactly what to know and what not to know. Is pretty funny in class "Hokay" kinda sounds like Tony Montana, reviews key concepts constantly, so if you're crying its really your own fault, not his. Stop
Skelton is an awsome professor. He does give difficult tests/exams but the class is biopsych. His attempts as humor are great because they provide some relief. He was always available for extra help outside the class. Ask yourself this. Do you still remember the material in more advanced classes?
very difficult, unreasonable tests. studying seems to do nothing. Boring lectures
No Comments
He is "hokay"! I had a really difficult time studying for this class, but after all, all those efforts are requited; other courses started to seem vety easy, and the knowledge actually helps a lot! Thanks, Skelton!!
hes mean. i saw his TA out when i was **** and i wanted to beat him up, just because i had so much displaced anger at skelton for being rude and a very difficult marker. hes smug about it too.
Here's an interesting guy. Hard to get along with no doubt, but hard to argue with someone who knows their stuff so well. Very organized & to the point. Hard tests, but you end up knowing a ton of info at the end...plus it stays with you!
He's awesome. If you don't like bio but have to take the course for your degree, do his class! He's very organized and tries really hard to make the material interesting. You learn a lot and it sticks with you.
Don't even bother buying the text. All you need to know are his lecture notes which are complete and posted on his website after every lecture. His tests are fair. His lectures put me to sleep.
Good teacher who knows his stuff. Lectures are really boring, tip for you is bring a pillow you'll need it. Tests are very difficult, if you are lucky you might pass with a descent grade.
All you complainers: you are just sour because you got a bad mark. Sure he's a hard marker, but this is university! Skelton is a great teacher, who obviously enjoys sharing his knowledge. I recommend this class to any bright student!
Skelton is a great teacher. He gives concise lectures that are interesting! He lays out exactly what you need to know and even gives you homework to practise with so there are no surprises on exams. The only people who are complaining are those that didn't do the homework and come to class.
He's a very good Prof. Knows his stuff. His tests ARE hard-> he plays little mind games on his tests. You'll need to know little points from the txt, but only the ones he mentions (what problems/diseases are assoc'd w/ certain brain areas). I recommend him very highly. PS-he is hard to get along w/.
I think he is rude and unhelful when asked questions outside of class. In class he's fine. His tests are hard but they DO help you retain the info way longer and improve understanding. I would definately take another class from him. i feel like I'm actually learning something for once.
Though this arrogant, egotistical, insolent & insensitive professor finds creative ways to present the material in a way that enhances retention, his exams are unfair & tricky. Apparently, knowing the material like the back of your hand will not suffice. I suggest taking this class with somebody els
a teacher should not be teaching if he makes fun of students when they ask questions. c'mon thats your job Ron. maybe you shouldnt be here if you think your to good. He likes making the smaller guy feel even smaller......avoid his class at all costs
Ugh... horrible
arrogant, condescending, and stubborn.i hate this man.415B was officially my worst class at UVic..even worse than biochem b/c of the prof.he wants us to think critically but eats you alive if your thoughts don't match his.someone needs to drop an anvil on him. 215 and 323 are ok..just not 415B.
This guy really takes his teaching seriously, and has obviously become embittered by the fact that most students don't. His tests are very hard, but he gives you everything you need to do well. He's a caring curmudgeon!
He always makes a great effort in teaching students during lectures. however, i don't like his teaching style and tests are always difficult!
The course content is interesting, & he knows his stuff. Definitely bitter. Instead of congratulations for high test scores, he convinces himself that people were cheating. Watch out: he claims he tests on core concepts but asks for stupid details. Study hard. Not horrid, but will make you angry.
I absolutely despise Dr. Skelton. He is rude, unfair, and condescending. He mocks students during class and enjoys seeing them suffer on exams. I got a good mark so these comments aren't embittered: avoid his class at all costs, and have minimal contact, if any, if you can't get out of him as a prof
Ronald is a goof. If you get stressed out during exams then watch-out because Ron FREEKS OUT and believes that everyone taking his course is attempting to cheat - which in turn creates a very stressful atmosphere or a very funny show to watch! KNOW YOUR DETAILS - even though Ron says differently.
Tests on little details, calls good grades a result of cheating. Boring lectures with stupid interative demos of his favorite fields of the subject. Arrogant, conceited, and gives students headaches. Makes you do fill in the blanks with terms from HIS dictionary (not the book).Take his class if you're ready for wasting time and a eternal suffering.
Can't stand this man, but despite his condecending arrogance hes a good teacher. He offers tutorials on his own time so i think that shows hes pretty commited. His tests are a little intense but his online notes help. Its not cheating if your going to provide the fill in the blank answers in class anyways! he's crazy
The worst class ever...he is paranoid about people cheating. Way too many terms to memorize...soooo boring.
Definately the worst prof i have EVER had at university. If you can avoid him at all, i strongly recommend it!
A condescending and bitter man. I think he would like to be anywhere else than in front of a lecture hall full of students. I will avoid his classes like the plague!!!
I have mixed feelings about this prof, I did really well but he just bothers me in his teaching style. His classes tend to not be entirely the same as his midterms which would be fine but the first midterm was ridiculously difficult and then they got to be ridiculously easy. And he's just obnoxious.
Ok, he isn't the easiest teacher out there, but retaking his course, I've found him very informative if you listen and figure out the underlying facts. He is very nice if you talk intelligently and he gets annoyed over mediocre students who has to be spoon fed with info. To be honest, Dr.Skelton teaches better over summer, maybe due to better mood?
Take the course with another instructor.
Interesting analogies.
Absolute garbage prof, his notes are crap, very UNORGANIZED, no real structure to them at all. even during class, answers questions like you're an idiot. Interesting class, terrible prof.......
Why can he be a prof at Uvic?
Aviod this prof...he talks down to his students, does not know answers asked in class, and has analogies that make no sense at all. This prof is not approachable, and beware of the questions you ask in class...cause apparently there are stupid questions. And lastly, why take away a helpful study tool that was helping 2/3 of the class?? Get over it!
I used to like him, until he turned turned into the devil. Sometimes I wonder what his intentions are. It seems like he wants his students to fail. BUT, I am really sick of the whining and complaining in class from the students. We all know that he's stubborn... he won't change, so let's get on with the class!
skelton is the worst teacher i have ever had. sometimes it seems he is more interested in how to "get us back" for talking than he is in teaching us. he should acknowledge the fact that some people will always talk in class. we aren't grade school students, we don't need to be discplined... just do your job skelton! gosh!
Can't teach. Can't research.
are you kidding? takeing away the summaries because you are upset that people have to, or want to leave? wow....dont know what to say other than this is ridiculous. he hates students and wants you to fail. period
His exams are based on his notes that are more confusing than the textbook. He took away the end of class summaries (which were extremely useful for his exams) because we weren't being quiet (reminds me of kindergarten) I went from loving Psych 100 to this being my most hated class.
ahhhhh!! What is WRONG with those notes?? Everything was SOO clear after reading the book, but those darn notes just messed up everything. The sad thing is that his exams are based on the notes, so it feels like I have to memorize his notes word by word! Being in this class is starting to question whether I really want to major in psych.
Please retire.. please please retire
His main objective is to make tests as tricky as possible. He tests on the "general concepts" however if it says 'to' instead of 'by' then the answer is wrong, that's what I call general. Horrible man. Won't give answers to the summaries and will make you feel like an idiot if you ask ie. "reread the notes" that is not teaching!!
I used to like this class, and I used to like him. Then he started getting ****y and rude. He took away study notes that were available the 1st 1/2 of the term, and he snarks at us. He doesn't even bother telling us to shut up like all other profs do at the start of class - he just starts the lecture in an incoherant mumble. What a disappointment!
His tests are pretty damn easy if you read the lectures. He has some really good metaphors, and some really confusing ones too. Defenitly comes off as being really condasending, but if you talk to him in office hours, he's a really friendly guy (if you come off as intelligent). If you are good at writing tests and dont like mass memorizing, easy a+
he is a good lecturer and if you study from his notes mainly, you'll do well on the tests. But you do have to study. The multiple choice is harder than the fill-in-the-blank section which is dead easy. He has some helpful analogies and mnemonics but basically this class is a lot of memorization.
Great lecturer, really makes the material accessible. Tests are tricky almost to the point of unfair.
Warning! Don't go there! Skelton's classes can be interesting, he jokes, throws in funny weird stuff to help you remember things BUT his testing sucks. He loves the wordy multiple choice. I felt like I was being tested on my multiple choice test-taking skills, not the material! I do NOT recommend this prof if you can help it.
WORST PROF EVER! If you can learn his notes AGAIN...after the lecture you'll do fine, but don't expect that he'll help you before or after class. Very rude and cocky. If you get the chance, take this course with someone else...as ANYONE else could do a better job. If you're looking into psyc courses....try Martin Smith....great guy!
Best prof going. Don't listen to those who couldn't handle him. Just because his tests are hard, it doesn't mean he's a bad teacher. In fact it's the total opposite. If you actually want to gain something from a class, this one will blow your mind.
An excellent and dynamic prof. His lectures are clear, and while he even says that his tests are hard, they're not that bad. Lecture notes are clear, complete and relevant.
worst
Lectures are okay, but the tests are IMPOSSIBLE. Even if you completely understand the concepts of the course, the tests are tricky in a semantical way. They are wordy, and one or two words in the question make the difference between a right and wrong answer. I think he's trying to challenge his students, but his are actually quite unfair.
He definitely could be worse, but wordy mcword to whoever said he tries to challenge his students but is unfair with semantics. I don't mind his lectures but he doesn't answer questions well. There are definitely some gaps in his bio knowledge. Get someone else if you can but it's not the end of the world if you end up with him.
What a guy. Be prepared for hilariously bad jokes nonstop, which most of the class won't pick up on. People get angry because they don't read the questions properly. Honestly, very very fair prof. If you are predominantly science then take this class because the biology in this class is grade 11 equivalent. Class takes little work to get an A+.
The things they say about Skelton are not all true, its not that bad. Just read the notes and do the summaries and you will do fine.
The best prof. I've had at UVic in three years, hands down. Has really worked with the course material to present it in a pedagogic way. If you have ANY problems understanding the material all you need to do is ask him at the tutorial. His tests really aren't difficult. I really don't know why some people complain so much about 215A. :S
I found him condescending and rude. He is very knowledgable, but for someone who doesn't know biology very well he is very difficult to understand...even with extra help! Not a friendly or approachable person at all.
umm well, he's rude and condescending and very egotistical . . . the material is interesting but i dislike skelton very much - tests are confusing no matter how hard you study, he is trying to trick you - pretty much all memorization - not a nice guy
Not approachable, inconsiderate, and egotistical. His exams are exactly what he asks from his summary and "what to know" questions. Wasted time trying to figure out how to use a laptop
No Comments
do the homework questions and you'll be fine on the tests. memorizing diagrams helps! he adds 5% to everyone's marks for each exam which I think is super nice. however, he's often rude and ambiguous when answering questions
Best prof I've ever had in UVIC. He makes you think (a lot). Tests are more than fair, lectures are well organized and entertaining. Class was a lot of work, but I've never taken away so much knowledge from any other course. Great prof if you're prepared to put in some effort.
His exams pull random questions from his disorganized lectures. He likes to do pointless demonstrations then ask specific test questiosn. Very poor teacher
worst ever!!!! do not take his class!! he got angry when nobody answered his questions.... hard tests! it's a nightmare
It's true that his methods of teaching are not the best but at least he is putting an effort to improve them. All the Qs in the midterms and final are from lectures so take good notes. He wants you to write the exact words that came out of his mouth. Although the class can be confusing at times, if you are interested in the topic it can be fun.
Skelton is a study in polar opposites. Some students love him, some students hate him. I am of the latter crowd. He forgets that he is providing a service and that we are paying for his class. He is condescending to students who ask questions he deems dumb. If you got a full load, avoid his class. In fact just avoid his classes all together.
Horrible prof - went into the class interested in the topic and left hating it. Skelton expects you to know the text and anything he mentions in class WORD FOR WORD and conducts the most imposible tests. I had to retake the course with Hill-Karrer and fully enjoyed it with her,and she actually seemed like she cared about the students AVOID SKELTON
I am definitely on the hating side of the scale. In 215, I had Mohapel and he was amazing,I got 99% in the class. I did much worse in skelton's class because you have to answer test questions in his exact wording. Also, he is horrible at explaining even simple concepts.
Ive never met such a patronizing prof...not approachable and stubborn. Notes are a mess and exams are worded so that even if you do understand the concepts, you won't earn the marks. He tries to implement how he thinks you should learn into his teaching, but it ends up with around 30-40% of the class failing in any given exam.
You will love him or hate him. If you are ok with actually using your brain, and thinking before you speak in class then you will love him. If you want an easy A and don't really care about learning the material then his class will probably be a frustrating experience. His classes and demos are fun. Exams easy if you do summaries.
Hate him n the class..its a mess..avoid avoid avoid!!!!!!!!!even though i ended up getting a Bplus in the first half but i had spent more time on this class than any other still the test r not justifiable what u know--just avoid..
I really enjoyed his classes. Fascinating lectures; explains concepts well, has a great sense of humour. True, tests are in-depth and tricky, but he gives fair warning and tells you exactly what you need to know; if you don't know it, it's your own fault. Don't take his class if you want an easy A, but you will learn a lot and retain most of it.
If you are at university to use your brain rather than simply to get a piece of paper then you will enjoy this class. Dr. Skelton set aside a lot of extra time for help. Posted comments regarding getting the exact wording are misleading. He expects you to know what words mean when you use them. Don't expect an easy Humanities A.
AVOID-he is on sabbatical..take others prof while he is not teaching!
A prof you will either love or hate. Take him if you want to challenge yourself and learn something interesting. Don't take him if you are lazy. Also don't make stupid comments as he wont play nice. All being said, really enjoyed the class.
Avoid, i would rather switch schools than take another class with him. Pompous and arrogant, his lectures are ridiculously useless for learning the material (the textbook on the other hand was really good!), but go to the classes because he tests in the style he teaches, which takes alot of getting used to.
Rare among professors, Skelton actually understands the point of undergraduate courses and teaches accordingly. Expect to work hard in his classes - there are two assignments each week and a set of written exams that give no quarter. The exams were fair and reflect the hw. Each question on the final was an abridged version of each of the lectures.
A pompous arrogant useless man. Made this semester unbearable. Not only did I not learn anything, I am less interested in this field because it is not negatively associated with him. The most unhelpful prof I have ever experienced. horrid experience. avoid his PhD student Sharon Livingston as well - she has become his minime
Really cool class, especially if you plan on going to grad school. It is challenging course, so don't take this class if you want to get an easy A doing the same thing as every other class. Basically, this class is what school should be like and is a nice break from flaky psych classes.
He spends atleast 10 minutes of every glass going over announcements nobody cares about. Then usually 10 minutes teaching you how to learn. To be honest I usually went, did my homework for other classes instead of listening and still did really well. Read the textbook, study the posted notes.. memorize the brain anatomy diagrams.
Wastes lots of time in class. Posted notes make very little sense. Was not engaged in his lectures. Exams were unfair, some answers were even of personal opinion (his). If you want to learn about something on your own terms, don't take this class. He will possibly drive you to dislike school in general. A very rude man in person and in class.
He can be really rude to students. The class is great but he is just difficult to deal with.
Very confused in his lectures. He often contradicts the textbook. It's very hard to follow his thought process as he jumps from one topic to the next a lot. The fact that the notes are not posted online before hand makes it even more difficult. I learned a lot from the book, which is very good, but not much from the lectures.
Horrifying!! Everyday he spent the whole class discussing how to study for his exams. His notes were so ridiculously hard to fallow, they were a jumbled confusing mess!! He never actually taught us anything, just pointed at his notes and said "so yah" and then moved on to the next thing which he also didn't teach us about. Waste of time and money.
STAY AWAY FROM THIS PROFESSOR! Skelton is ridiculously unorganized, and spends his time telling you how to learn, or treating you like an idiot when you don't do well in his class. Not worth anyone's time or money. He is rude & unhelpful, you might as well just memorize the text, it will be more valuable than listening to his jumbled lectures.
Dr. Skelton is not a good professor. His notes are simply a streaming word document with no organization. He hardly explains any concepts. All he does is talk about how to study/learn things in general. He doesn't actually teach you the material you need to know! All of his exam questions came from diagrams and specific things in the textbook.
Worst Prof EVER! even if hes the only option u have, like i did AVOID! completely idiotic and even worse are his tests! Its like he deliberately wants you to fail! Transfer before you take him!
Avoid at all costs. Straight A, fourth year student sitting at 68% in this class. Avoid avoid avoid.
Try to avoid this class if possible. He is very disorganized, rude to students, and extremely unhelpful. Prepare to be mocked if you don't understand something. Tests are difficult but it is possible to do well if you study... a lot.
The first week of this class I was stoked on the material we were going to learn, after the first week I realized that Skelton makes this class as unenjoyable as possible! Thought it was going to be my favorite class this semester, it is now my least favorite.
Should have been THE course of my degree but ended up being the least-favourite part of my day. He's condescending and he says he dislikes "shallow" learning but tests verbatim from the text. It's easy, but boring. Class is SO PAINFUL to go to. Wish they would get someone better!
Arrogant professor who comes ill-prepared to classes, making adjustments to his unorganized lecture material as he goes. Not helpful with questions, very CONDESCENDING and rude esp. if subject is not your major and you ask a question he deems stupid. During office hours he rushes you out after not explaining well, lacks empathy and 'people skills'.
Rude, arrogant, condescending and unorganized. Corrects/adjusts his slides as he goes, not helpful with questions in class or during office hours - rushes you out of his office. If subject not your major be prepared to learn on your own. Lacks empathy and people skills, is hung up on semantics, you have to say things with his words.
HE IS SIMLY THE WORST! I don't understand how people back in the day voted him with a "smile". He is SO RUDE! His tests are so bad/hard. They are always asking to find the false one and just keep in mind they are all right. Besides that he has Fill in the blanks which are sometimes nearly impossible. I m so lucky to be majoring in this too :(
I have never said this on here before but.. AVOID. I was genuinely interested in the course content until I had Skelton. I'm now debating switching my major out of Psychology. You may be able to do well, but you'll have to devote your entire semester to it. Learning through the textbook is the only way to go for this class. Tests are ridiculous.
WOW he's so bad! I wish my neurobiology or biochemistry profs could sit in on this class just so they could say, "You don't really know what you're talking about, do you?" Just bad, bad lecturer and bad, bad teaching style. Biopsyc is my major, I love this stuff, but I hated this class - he makes it so unenjoyable!
Basically, he has taken an extremely interesting class and made it the worst class ever. His teaching style is hopeless, his overheard slides are a rambling mess that make sense to no one except himself, & his tests contain extremely hard fill in the blank questions, where you have to use his EXACT word used in lecture and no part marks are given.
Useless professor . Poor lecturer , unclear notes , scrolls through a word document . He has no proof to back up anything he is saying.test are fill in the blanks , even if you understand the material fully you could fail the exam because he is so stuck on you regergitating exactly what he is thinking . I am in 4th year bio, never had a worst prof
The content of the course was very interesting, but Skelton ended up making me hate the class. His notes are hard to follow, the text explains the concepts far better.
The worst prof I have ever had in my life. This was supposed to be the best course of my degree but ended up being the worst. Avoid at all costs. Like previously said, his classes basically consist of him scrolling through a word document and making changes as he goes. It was painful to go to class.
Worst prof I have ever had. Biopsych is my major and I may have just failed that class because of his teaching style. His exams are ridiculous! Just memorizing things word for word and memorizing diagrams! His lectures were just him scrolling through a messy word document. He spent a lot of time on how to learn, not what to learn. Worst prof.
challenging course & professor, but brain surgery is challenging as well & this course leads to difficult careers like that so deal with it! Worth taking.
I'm a bio-psyc major and I feel like I just got cheated out of one of the most important classes of my undergrad degree. Entirely ineffective teacher that treated us like children. 'Teaching' consisted of enumerating what processes and information we needed to know for the test rather than actually engaging us with the material. Disappointing.
ok so I'm switching sections after the first midterm, just to warn anyone who doesn't have him yet. Even if you understand the content backwards and forwards like he asks you to, you will not do well on his tests.
What to say that hasnt already been said. 200+ reviews and for a good reason. Hard midterms! Does not follow the book what so ever. (dont even buy it). Makes you go to class every day for the "testtip" & summaries, which aren't THAT helpful. I got a decent mark in his class but only cause I really tried, which is what you will have to do too!
He made me hate the class.
Don`t know what people are complaining about, must be psyc students...took this as an elective (biochem major) and it was one of the easiest courses ever. Basic biology and anatomy with a bit of mechanism stuff. Notes are a pain to read through but essentially gives you the answers to any question (highlights most of them!!) Easy mark booster.
He is very condescending and unapproachable towards students. What should have been a very interesting course became unbearable. His tests are difficult to prepare for, and his notes are very poor.
Single worst teacher I've ever had, hands down. Unavoidable for upper-level biopsycs, so it's probably best to have him for 215A to learn how he tests, which is asking you which multiple-choice option is incorrect and then regurgitating the notes verbatim for short-answers. Be prepared to do a lot of memorizing. Attending class not worth it.
Complete disappoinment. I was so excited to take this course and soon realized that it would be exhausting. Even though I knew my material inside and out, the tests were excruciatingly hard! His lectures are all over the place and more confusing than helpful
To give him credit, he is forced to teach an introductory course when it is obvious he is in love with the higher level material. He's teaching a very complex subject, it can't be easy. However, must he make his exams so unbearable? I hate the "which of the following is FALSE" questions, and I would like to currently murder his fill-in-the-blanks.
Eh, everyones giving him a bad rep, but he ain't that bad. Learn his testing style, and know the material, their standard issue university skills.
I do not know why he is professor. He is rude, bitter, inconsiderate and has no interest in teaching anyone! Terrible notes/organization, not helpful at all. Has told students in the class that have asked question to "figure it out yourself". Do not recommend at all!
People complain about the tests being difficult or him being unapproachable. perhaps he is unapproachable to students who don't attend class? He's very approachable to the 50% of the class who attend lectures. If you don't understand because you don't attend class that's your problem. Tests straight out of notes. Personal responsibility, peeople.
Skelton has little respect for student questions but his lectures were pretty tolerable. After the first midterm you get to know his teaching style and the class gets easier.
Not an easy class but it's definitely possible to do well if you are willing to put in the effort. Dr Skelton makes himself available for extra help in tutorials and never seemed disrespectful provided you actually showed some thought for your question instead of asking "what's the answer?" VERY clear in expectations. Awesome prof!
He spends way too much time at the beginning of class going through announcements and then runs out of time. then suggests we read the lecture notes. and his examples and props are useless and dont show clearly what he's trying to say. i see his attempt to help student understand and he seems nice (at times). but often does not make things clearer
The class is not that difficult compared to other science classes, and he does a good job ensuring you know what's being taught. But he is rude, and comes off quite arrogant. It's tolerable though. His notes are fairly clear and very complete.
Avoid taking his class if possible.
Rude, arrogant, degrading comments about student, inapproriate jokes. Yelled straight in faces of students. topic is interesting and class materials is cool, but no one can stand sitting through his microsoft word presentation or the way he yells the lectures.
I literally went to 5 lectures the entire semester and I came out of it with 94%. Everyone needs to stop their complaining, just memorize his disorganized lectures, morph yourself to agree with his opinion, and do the fill in the blank review at the end of each lecture. Sure, he's inappropriate, but damn is it easy to do well in his classes.
I thought he was a great prof, funny, and he tells you EXACTLY what he wants you to learn. If its not plain enough, then you probably shouldn't be in university.
Do not take a class with this professor. I am very interested in the class material but Skelton is a horrible teacher. Notes are disorganized, he is unclear on some concepts, arrogant. Tests are completely on useless details from the lecture notes, very small amount of questions on the material supposed to be covered.
He is the absolute worst prof I have ever had. He is incredibly unorganized with his lecture notes. He does not care if you know the content of the course, it is all about how well you can memorize HIS choice of words. He is hardly ever available, and will not reply to your emails. He is rude, angry and a very bad educator. STAY AWAY.
Easy class for science students.
Not the most helpful, awful at responding to e-mails and does not do a good job clarifying information for students. HOWEVER, his exams are EXTREMELY easy. The fill in the blank q's are straight out of his Lecture Summaries & his MC q's are mediocre. Just know his lecture notes and youll be fine. I never went to class and got an A+
This man is a nightmare. I wish I could report that his lack of decorum was his greatest fault buutttt its not. He is unhelpful, disrespectful and wants to see you fail. Drop this course immediately...it's not worth it.
Honestly, I don't know why Skelton spends the majority of his lectures for this class teaching students how to study. They are all third year or above: if they haven't already figured out how to work at university level on their own, they'd have dropped out already. Material not particularly hard, the way he teaches is extremely frustrating.
Every other proff I have ever had is a saint compared to this man. He is impossible! The answers to his tests are completely dependent on his preferred wording. Don't even try to clarify his opinion either because he won't provide any useful information.. He will re-say everything he just said in class in the most annoying and condescending tone.
Worst professor I have ever had. He doesn't answer any questions properly when asked and has no respect for students. Avoid if possible.
Usually I think the people who complain about profs are the ones that do none of the work and expect a good grade.. This is not the case. I spent weeks studying the material back to front and still came out with a mediocre grade. He does not clarify confusion (even if you ask) and his tests are brutal. AVOID IF AT ALL POSSIBLE.
WORST 3 mnths of my life. You can read his notes, listen in class, you could probably rewrite the text book on loose leaf & you'll still do poorly. I'm more then half way through and this course its seriously making me question if I chose the right major (psych). Going to try too memorize his notes, although they are messy, unclear and disorganized
Incredibly rude man, belittles the entire class and yells at his own T.A. Grumpy, unhelpful and inept at using a computer even though the course is mainly taught through the computer. He is pompous and does not care if you learn anything. Avoid like the plague.
You can go to every class, read all the chapters, review all his notes and still do very poorly. His notes are disorganized. He is extremely rude and unapproachable and will not give a straight answer to any of your questions. If you don't have a strong science background, you are screwed. Difficult course content, he makes it even harder! Avoid!!!
He isn't a bad instructor. Just show him you give a crap and that you have free thought about the content. He doesn't want to teach the next generation of robots. All the years I have been at university he is the only one to provide regular tutorials, he cares more than you think.
Although he's not the nicest guy out there, he is a great prof. He teaches material so that you will understand it and remember it, not purely memorization. If you study his notes and understand the material instead of just memorizing it, you will do great! Tests are really straightforward.
Makes an effort to relate concepts to things easily observable in real life. He's available for questions and discussions, and is (generally) respectful and pleasant. Issues I had in this course were with the course itself (wanted more bang for my buck, a little basic for someone in Kines/ Bio) not the prof. Would take a class with him again.
I don't understand why everyone says his notes are so horrible and that its impossible to do well! His tests are extremely fair! Only tests on main points, which he reiterates multiple times in bold (in notes) and in "summary" and "previously" sections of notes! He can be rude and blunt, but isn't a terrible person by any means. I enjoyed his class
Rude, immature, and disrespectful. Makes illogical arguments against your right answers that don't match his exact wording. A lot of information covered (Better than not enough) and mostly memorization of basic concepts. Overall, good course but not the best prof. A+ is achievable.
Yes, he can be rude and direct, but if you attend lectures and fill in the blanks when you take notes, it it easy to do well. Develop a thick skin and you'll be fine.
He can be a bit rude and bit arrogant; however, he is incredibly knowledgeable and he has excellent notes! If you study these notes you will do great on his tests! I definitely recommend taking his class because you will learn a lot of interesting info and you will do well as long as you take the time to memorize and understand his notes!!
Skelton is great. His analogies are a bit annoying and not always the clearest, and his humour beyond dry, but he is straight forward in telling you key factors to study. If you go to class and actually listen, you will do well and learn lots. For BIO students anyways, I highly recommend Skelton.
Dr. Skelton took forever to send the final mark to the registrar's office. Over 2 days past the due date to submit final grades which was annoying. If you are strong in Bio you will do well in his class. He is slightly arrogant but not a horrible teacher. He scares you into studying intently for his exams but hard work pays off.
Barely went to class and received a B+. Make sure to save his notes because he does take them down. But if you memorize his key points on his notes (they're bolded which makes it easier to figure out) you'll be fine. Not very approachable but again if you actually try to understand what he's getting at in his notes you will do FINE.
If you are a student who has taken a Biology course, do yourself a favour and switch out. His teaching style is horrid, referring to neurons as "mr and mrs"... Full of himself, condescending and lacks intelligence.
It is a course I spent a ridiculous amount of time studying for, only to receive a bad grade. The subject matter is very interesting but his tests are unrealistic. The fact that the majority of the class doesn't feel comfortable asking him questions due to his rudeness and imminent embarrassment pretty much says it all.
Super easy course, he explains everything in class. Never opened the textbook and he gives students who arent late a bonus 3%. Final was hard, but he scaled everyone up about 15%. People who say Skelton is bad, honestly have not taken a real science course.
Contrary to many people posting on here, i really enjoyed Skelton's class. His dry humour is lost on many (I personally loved it), but you can tell that through his gruffness he really wants everyone to succeed.
He gives a good overview of the subject matter but he can be rude and the procedures surrounding the test are old fashioned and anxiety provoking. He would be a great teacher if he didn't make everyone so nervous!
TERRIBLE PROF!He seems like he does not want you to succeed, and will not do anything to help you if you are having trouble. He goes out of his way to be mean. His lectures are mumbled which make them impossible to understand. Definitely regret taking his course.
He's a little grumpy and can come off kind of mean but he does his best to make things easy to understand. As someone who isn't in Sciences I thought he did a great job explaining everything. Test aren't easy but I had much worse. Only complaint was how long it took to get our final exam marks back (not until we came back for second semester!)
Skelton says he tests on understanding, not memorization. However, obviously if you did not memorize his word choices then you don't understand.
Rude, arrogant, and disrespectful to his students. However, the midterms are really easy coming from a science students perspective. Don't expect him to peak your interest in biopsych, lectures are not worth attending aside from 3% attendance bonus.
I loved the way his lectures/notes/tests are put together. He is extremely clear on what he expects at the beginning of the semester and reminds people throughout. I found that the people who dislike him were those who didn't follow his very basic rules. Highly recommend!!
This guy is hilarious, gives you bonus points for showing up to class and participating. Don't bother getting the text book never readit and got an A+, just study his notes. Test can sometimes be a little tricky but honestly this course is easy as far as biology courses go.
Horrible prof. Incredibly rude and arrogant. Told his students to shut up after a test. Tests are SO hectic and stressful. Avoid like the plague!!!
AVOID THIS PROF AT ALL COSTS! His main priority is teaching students how to learn (specifically in HIS way), not the actual material! All of his tests are written only, and he will only mark it right if it is EXACTLY what he would put down himself. I got a mark off on a word because it was the plural form (even though it was the right answer)
For the first 2 months I couldn't stand him. His tone was rude and aggressive and deducted "attendance marks" if you were late and he just reads off his slides during lectures. Once I figured out how to study for his test I was able to do well. Go to office hours if possible, hes super helpful and do the experential learning...easy 10%!
Skelton is a wonderful prof. He explains exactly what he wants from you and doesn't throw any surprises at you. The tests may seem like memorization to some people, however they are simple questions about important concepts he explicitly explains in class. If you listen you will do very well.
Skelton taught me to study. This is a difficult course. It is NOT impossible. I studied very hard and got a reflective grade. Meet people on the first day of class and start studying immediately. Take notes and record as much of the FITB questions at the end of every lecture.
Skelton is a good guy once you get to know him. He does have his moments tho as I'm sure other people have indicated.
