OMG, run from this teacher! While taking his class, all I could think about was taking my own life. If you talk at all in his class, he will jump all over your case or kick you out. Sweaty.
if you get this teacher i feel sorry. but youll end up droping the course eventually. He prides himself in being a jerk. dont waste your money on him if you dont have to.
Oh man, I can't believe I stayed in this class. This teacher is extremely hard. Got an F on all my essays cause they didn't answer the thesis. He does know his stuff VERY well, which helps. Very intimidating as well. Class started with 24 people and ended with 5. If you NEED to learn eng take him.
if your not ready to get down to business and put extra effort don't take his class. Alot of work and stress. It's well worth it if your serious with his course. You will come out a better writter and reader and even improve with your study habits. I highly recommend him to those who've got the time
I hated english before this class, then he actually taught what it means to write an argument. A great teacher, very knowledgeable. But after I took his class, every paper I've written has been an A paper(and I'm an engineer).
this teacher is a jerk. I have never gotten an f on a test before him and i studied alot. He's seriously a hard grader. I've failed ever single paper in his class. there is only 7 people in our class. He picks material that is not interesting at all. he is such a jerk even the tutors know this!!!
When I firsted started Mr. Smith's class, I was like oh my GOD what have I gotten into, but I never like to quit. I thought he was a complete jerk, and made me want to cry! But I stuck with it, and in the end he was very helpful. He ended up being an OK guy, and I LEARNED A LOT!!!!
This guy is obviously in a competition with Mr. Wozniak to be the biggest ****-bag English teacher at Palomar College. The only difference between the two teachers is that students can actually pass Smith's class with a C. These two teachers should be put in a rocket and shot into the sun.
This guy is a jerk! Will humiliate you if you don't know your grammar perfect or screw up papers. Very hard with unrealistic expectations.
this guy is a navy seals drill Sargent of English, this guy has no leniency and is the most anal and retentive person i have ever met. He isn't funny or outgoing. everything has to be done his exact way or you will not pass with a chance.... i am serious about this guy DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR! IT WILL BE HELL!!!!!!
Difficult class with a lot of work, but very redeeming. Mr. Smith takes great care and attention in critiquing writing, which helped me and all of my classmates. You cannot skate by in this class, but it is worth the work.
I took Mr. Smith last semester and to be honest, the first day i realized it wasnt going to be a walk in the park. He IS tough, demanding and sure enough isnt afraid to make students feel unconfortable. With that said, i have never learned so from an english teacher. Students that are not afraid of hard work, take him. If you are, dont.
YOU WILL LEARN!! If you're serious about school, take his class. It is beneficial. Future papers you write, no matter what subject, you will succeed in, if you take his class. Is he a prick? ABSOLUTELY. But, if you do good, he praises you. Just follow what he says. It's like boot camp for English. I even took his Eng100 class. He's that hard.
He will forcing you learn English in difficult way, and he will mad if you don't know answers, then he give you too many homework( you will write endless journals). pal, there's a lot english teacher in palomar? why you want take this perk?
he is a very tough teather but if you want to learn take this class. he tought me so much more than any other teacher. he is there to teach and he really cares about his students.
This teacher will dominate you. He will tear your heart out and feed it to the coyotes. If you take him you will get killed he will murder every essay you write. He will "make you work harder that ever" and that will not be good enough. If you want to learn how to fail take him.
Smith is condecending & if you don't know the answer he gets red in the face & pounds on his desk. When he writes comments on your papers it is more of his opinion than constructive critical remarks. Even on opinion papers if you disagree with what he thinks is "clearly" right then you get a low grade on the paper. Rude & makes you scared to learn
He is rude and very short with students and only likes his own method of writing. If you like writing at all you will most likely hate him because he doesn't want your style he wants his with your words. As long as you revise well you'll pass. Pay attention to ALL of his comments.
Prof. Smith is really tough!! He can be such a jerk and will make you feel incredibly stupid when you do not follow ALL his directions! if you wan to learn a lot then take his class I learned soo much! make sure youre on his good side, read the material, and follow directions!
Well this teacher is hard, but you leave his class knowing so many helpfull and usefull things. You really have to work your but off.Although I didnt pass his class I learned alot and you come to enjoy it after a while.
Not very helpful in areas where undeveloped students need the most work, mostly concentrates on the essay procedures and not basic tecniques for overall achievment.
Challenging teacher, but very rewarding class. Must follow directions in order to pass, do all the hw, and PARTICPATE! He gives bonus points for particpation. As long as you do your best, you can honestly pass. I started out with F's on in class papers, but if you rewrite your papers well, he'll take the higher grade.
He was very rude and very unhelpful, he degraded and put down students on a daily basis. Believes his method of teaching is the only way and refuses to let you be creative with your writing. Dont take him unless you are extremely patient with disrespectful professors.
He is a very rude professor. He is one of those people that think they know it all and can never be wrong. Actually he believes he is never wrong. He gets very mad if you try to correct him or point something out. He is even rude to other teachers. If you want a rude teacher that would rather fail students and bring down students then take him.
Now this is a real proffesor! But if u cant take the college level work this is not for u u may not have more than one absence u will get behind! no extracredit but ur journals and u wont be able to gain points for re-visons on essays! please follow all direccions as he says and praticipate in class...Good Proffessor but Very very challeging!
Wrost teacher for an eng 50 class, this is not even a transfer class. If ure taking eng 200 maybe but is not helpful. He thinks he knows everything and he doesnt like u to make mistakes. HORRIBLE WORST TEACHER EVER. DON TAKE HIM,ure's truely Ni...
DEFINITELY not a teacher I would recommend. His teaching methods are very presice but he is very arrogant and disrespectful. If you have a misunderstanding he speaks to you as if you are a complete idiot and makes you feel as though you shouldn't come to him for help. He does not allow any mistakes, and is very discouraging.
REALLY RUDE
Hands down worst experience I have ever had with a teacher. He is arrogant, rude, prides himself on being a A-Hole. He has no compassion for his students. Ask him a question he will treat you like an idiot. There is no room for creativity in his class. Doesn't respect his students opinions, only his ideas are correct. Lives in his own world.
this is a teacher that every student is afraid of.. he doesnt like to help, he will make you feel as if you are the most stupid student around and to be honest.. the first day of class he said that he doesnt care what we think because he already has our money.. and that he is the biggest **** we will ever meet
I took ENG 50 twice before. Mr. Smith was the only teacher who prepared me to pass the course. So when I hear others say he's rude/mean, they don't see how this teacher tries to motivate us to do our best. Mr. Smith isn't "mean"; he's demanding because he knows how hard the Exit Exam really is. To those who say Mr. Smith is rude, I say grow up!
HORRIBLE TEACHER!! I can't stress this enough. I have never failed a class in my life but I am probably going to fail this one. It's his way or the high way. For example, I went to a tutor today to get help on my essay Mr. Smith corrected. The tutor told me 4/5 of my errors on my paper weren't actually errors, they just weren't Mr. Smith's way.
Mr. Smith is a good proffessor. Yes, his a bit demanding and wants things exactly how he explains it, but I personally think I learned alot from being in his class. He gives reading and grammar quizzes, but they are not hard if you read the material. Every essay you write is then given back to you so you can correct it. He is given you a second cha
He has a 48 hour policy which means you can't talk to him for 48 hours after you receive your essay. He says if you miss 4-5 mistakes you will get an incomplete and won't give you any feedback to help you if you get an incomplete.and when you take it to the tutor they don't know how to help because the teacher didn't leave many comments.
There is no doubt that this is a grueling class. However, this Prof. is the most skilled teacher I have ever had in my life. If you want to learn how to become a great writer, he is your best choice. If you invest the time and effort to learn, you can get an A. Also, he is only hard because he wants his students to learn.
Ask a student if they want admission to the best universities, and they will say, "Yes!". What do you think that takes? Hard Work. Prof. Smith teaches at the level of a high-ranking university. If you want a high-quality education, then take this class. There are no shortcuts to intelligence.
This is how a real teacher should be. After all, you are in school to learn. All Mr.Smith does is teach you (in ENG 100) how to write and think critically. Prof. Smith thrives to prepare student on a level that they would be fully compatible to the next class. He give just enough work (and time for it) so that you would be able to do it, if you rea
I love English. I hated this class. He tuns on the air conditioner every day. To freezing. Even on rainy days. And yet he sweats. He never tells you what he wants until after you turn your papers in. He was rude and condensending. I didn't learn anything in his class. I was too busy trying to stay warm. I was depressed in his class. Avoid him.
He is very rude. Doesn't help a struggling student but loves to boast about his awesome workshops. He makes you take a test at the beginning and he pulls the 'rip it up' routine. It is not a wakeup call for those that actually studied for it. Kind of discouraging. Don't recommend for a first time student, like I was.
He's a really demanding teacher , but iI really did learned how to write better thanks to him. Even though i didn;t pass his class, it really did helped a lot in many ways. He does give you second chances when it comes to rewriting your essays and turning them in for some extra points. If you really want to pass English 50, I do recommend him :)
Expectations vastly exceeded the norm, ?spoon-feed?, ?spoon feed?. On a whim of anger, Prof Smith ?excused? a young woman who was studying from printed sheets and then changed the syllabus adding extra work. The class was working from different editions of text and he created his own version of MLA, ?useless?. Prof Smith offered criticism that
Well, to be cleanlet me break this down simple. DON't TAKE THIS PORFFESOR!!!! I went through the enitre class (doing 9 additional rewrites on 3 essays) and I maintained a NC for the class untill the last week. Since, I had no grade I could not pass. So I missed the last two classes. He reported me as not full timewrongly and cost me 5k$
This professor is hard, but if you want to learn something and willing to work hard, take him. I learned more in 15 weeks then in 12 years of school.
Learned so much. Gives you second chances to raise your grade. His techniques are very helpful.
if you wanna learn to write well, take him. but if you just want to pass english 100. find another professor. he is not easy A or even easy B. i learned alot from him.
Took his ENG50 class years ago and to this day I remember him as the worst teacher I've ever had. WARNING: Do not take if possible!
STAY FAR FAR away! you will learn a lot but he is very rude and has an extremely short temper!
This guy is a real D Head. I gave it 150% and He gave me no credit on all my papers. After the first class I already wanted to slap him across his face. Im not trying to get by easy but dont waste your time on this arrogant prick. Ive never wished hell upon someone before him. He would fail his own mother
Not an easy A! Got a B+ on first draft of an essay and he said it was the best he's read in 10 years. If you do everything he asks, the way that he asks you to do it, there will be no problem. He favors those who are engaged in class, but dislikes when students are uninterested in learning. He has high standards and expectations, but you'll learn.
Very intimidating character but you do learn a whole lot. Very straight forward whether your writing is good or needs improvement. This class is only for those who are willing to put the effort as there are many easy homework points to miss.
IF you want to lean how to write well take this class, but it is not easy by any stretch of imagination. He is pretty rude and you have to follow all of the rules in syllabus or you wont pass. Try to get a different professor.
The hardest teacher I have ever encountered. Struggled the whole class between the stressful work and rude comments. He could have taught this class just as effectively being nicer, but if you do everything he wants, you will pass and learn A LOT.
This class was awful. I dreaded Mondays and Wednesdays because I knew that I had his on those days. He is intimidating and VERY rude (he makes you feel stupid if you're wrong). His standards are really high and his expectations are kind of hard to understand as far as the in class essays go. I would suggest finding a different professor.
He will definitely push you to work hard. He knows what he's doing though and if you are willing to put in the effort, you will learn alot.
If you really want to learn how to write and are serious about learning, take this class. Be ready to use a pen and write in the textbook. Underlining is essential if you really want to understand any of the articles given. Help your self and read the book because there will be quizzes. Do your best and participate in lectures and you will be fine.
Extremely strict, runs class like a drill sergeant. Gives so many tedious rules and is intimidatingunapproachable. If you would like a challenge in English I recommend him but otherwise get a dif prof. Very rude and made snide comments to students (in front of class!). He WILL drop you if you don't keep up too.
Very hard class, worked my butt off for my B. Very specific wants for all assignments. DO THE READINGS, listen to lectures, pay attention or you will not pass. Don't miss class he will drop you. Very approachable and helpful though, wants you to succeed if you are willing to try. Essays are hard.
Very rude in every way imaginable. Ask for help and he will embarrass you for not getting it the first time. Don't take his class unless you are a masochist.
Professor Smith was a rude teacher. If you want help don't go to him, he will ridicule you in front of the other students. His tests are the worst, he expects you to memorize the most mundane, useless information for quizzes. Forget about this class, and find a professor who cares about his students, otherwise buckle down for a 2 hour rant.
The only students in my class who suffered were the recent high school grads with the over entitled mentality. Professor Smith is extremely passionate in his work and expects his students to show him the same level of respect. I found him to be firm but fair, exactly how college should be. If you're looking to be spoon fed an A, look elsewhere.
He made everything so much more difficult then it had to be. He goes on and on for hours which makes it so easy to fall asleep in class. I remember one time he spent 30 min talking about commas! He can be very rude, like im paying to be here can you not make it so difficult, its just an ENG 100 class!!!
STAY AWAY!! He makes everything a lot more difficult than it needs to be. He is pretty intimidating also. If you don't know the exact definitions or phrases from the chapter, he will mark you wrong on the quiz and then go on the tell you that you aren't working hard enough. He was my worst experience with a professor. If you have him, good luck...
Very critical of students. Gives lots of thorough reading assignments, that are used for class the next day. Tardiness is a moral sin to him. He does not have a problem criticizing your work in front of the class. I do not recommend taking this class if you're coming from high school. Very rude.
He's tough and strict with little leeway if life happens. He's anti-tech and myopic on tech use and the positives. He's extremely old school and instead of you thinking on how to innovate in new ways he wants you to follow old stuff. He always brings up how long he's been teaching in a condescending way. If you have a lot of things don't take him.
Prof. Smith is very passionate about his job. One thing no one can say about him is that "it's just a job to him" or "he doesn't care." He is a tough grader, his class is demanding (in/out of class) and you will be challenged. I would absolutely take him again though, I learned a ton. He has an agenda, to combat grade inflation and promote reading.
Professor Smith loves to teach, and although he was the toughest teacher I have ever had I am so glad I had him. Reading is a must, you cannot pass without it, but he picks very interesting materials for the class. I struggled quite often but he taught me a better way to read and it made a difference. I am so glad I took him even if I did struggle
Lets just say youre gonna wanna drop the first 30 mins of hearing him speak . Hes about the worst professor I ever took no doubt. If you need to take ENG 100 avoid him at all costs .
Extremely egotistical, loves to boast his ego by stating how long he has been teaching. While I dont doubt his knowledge on the subject, he expects too much for ENG 100 students. Reading is a must for this course. However, he abuses his position of authority to impose is values on the students. His way or the highway. Condescending, and strict.
Do not take him he is not a very good teacher. My friend and I have him and we will not pass. P
He is teaching writing and reading processes that help with the rest of your college courses. If you dont want to learn a structured way of reading/writing then dont take his class. Its pretty straight forward. Hes not the warmest of instructors but if you put in the effort you will do well. Participation is important.
Professor Smith gave me a lot of insight in the process of reading and writing. He is a tough educator but by this I mean that you will learn and that your money is well worth the price. You have to give the attention is required and focus your time doing assignments. If you don't enjoy reading and acquiring knowledge you will not succeed.
He is the worst professor Ive ever encountered. If life happens thats too bad for you, he doesnt care about anything other than how long he has been teaching. He is an extremely tough grader and send you to the tutors for help even if you make a mistake of misplacing a comma. Extremely rude and disrespectful. Choose someone else instead of him.
It was my first time being challenge in a English class. At the beginning it was hard for me because I was not used to read, however, with the time I got used to his expectations. Honestly he is not that bad, you just have to work hard for your grade, common you are in college already! He really does prepare you for further English classes.
So I always try to be positive, and I wanted to like this class so much! But honestly DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. Smith is clearly a very intelligent man, but he is not the best communicator. In fact, he is consistently condescending and will harass you in front of the class. His quizzes are impossible and he will not help you do better, even ifyou ask
Professor Smith is very passionate about English and also about his students. He is tough and will not let you skate through the class, but he does it for your own benefit. He will help you succeed in his class and in life. He helps you with your papers and rewrites until your writing is the best it can be and worth the grade.
Full discloser, I never took this class. I dont attend Palomar, I attend USC. My girlfriend is in this class. I helped her with all her essays and read the comments he wrote on the paper. If he was a harsh grader that would be fine, but his comments are just ridiculous. He constantly contradicts himself and he treats his students like children.
I know teachers personally and asked them to check my work and they said it looked great etc. but when I turned in my paper I still got Cs and Ds for reasons that didn't make sense. treats his students in a disrespectful manner when all they do is answer his questions. don't even bother having an opinion in his class or you're wrong.
I have taken a lot of classes and have had my fair share of rude, disrespectful, and ridiculous teachers, but Ronald takes the cake. I have never been more frustrated with a teacher;I clearly remember a student asking for help with their paper and him responding "google it". He sure does care about his students.
Smith is a great teacher who taught me alot about composition and english, and his assignments are challenging and thought-provoking yet reasonable. However, he is very self-centered and irritating to the point where his class was very unenjoyable. Also, lectures totaled to ten hours per week which I think is unjustified, even for a summer course.
Had to drop this class because of how bad it was. Minor mistakes on your papers will take you to the writing center in order to get any credit for revisions, which is annoying but fine. Cant make it to the writing center? Tough luck.. heres an F, with no alternative help methods. There is nothing about this class that makes you excited to learn.
This professor is horrible, I would never take his class again. Gives so much homework. Too bad I did not know that rate my professor was a thing back then. I received an F even though I tried my hardest, effort does not matter to him but only quality.
Took this class in 2020 and I've never been bullied in front of the whole class before for how my camera looked. Onto of that he told me my experience was wrong in my paper and I don't understand any of my reading when he asked for opinions on the reading. I wouldn't want anyone to take his class if you care about your learning. Felt so discouraged
I'm very heart broken and stunned by the fact English is WAS my favorite subject, not anymore due to this disgraceful excuse for a teacher. I was a top class A+ student from elementary school up to now, in his class. He's self-centered, deceitful, and over all barbarous. DO NOT waste your time and life on this class.
Lots of quizzes based on the readings. Extremely hard grading papers and constantly sends you to the writing center. He would embarrass students in front of the whole class. Would not recommend. Most people in my class dropped it. Participation counts for grade. He was clearly very knowledgeable but not good at teaching.
I was so upset taking his course. One day I was very sick (fever and intense dizziness), so I emailed him before class to ask if I could make up some works later. He agreed. So, I took my medicine and went home for a nap. But as I woke up, I saw his email asking: "Where ur work is, it's 9PM already" with many exclamation marks followed.
While certainly a tough grader, I would say I've developed the most as a reader and writer from Professor Smith. The class is set up so even if you fail the essays, a passing grade can be reached. He is clear about his expectations and will assist and encourage students to reach out if they are struggling. Take his class if you value your education
Great writing professor! I learned more from Professor Smith's class about reading, writing, and doing quality research in one semester than I did in high school. As long as you attend, participate during class and do the assignments, Professor Smith gives rewards you with a ton of bonus points, so you're bound to get an A.
Professor Smith gives detailed comments on essays and journal entry's, I absolutely recommend to listen to those comments as well as meet with him. He knows when a student cares about the class and if you take the time to ask for help, he will take the time to help you. I went from an 50% on my draft to a 88% on my final because I met with him.
Please take this class seriously and ignore the bad reviews! Mr. Smith is a top-notch professor who cares deeply about his students and his work. Putting ANY effort into this class pays off. I learned a lot and improved my performance overall. I was nervous at first, but he made my first semester go smoothly. Great class, even better professor.
The last student's review is right. “Ignore the bad reviews!” Students who gave bad reviews don't know about negative bias, intrinsic learning, soft skills, and self-advocacy, which are some of MANY things you'll learn in Prof. Smith's class. Duh! A college prof. who challenges students to learn? If you "wanna" LEARN, take this class!
