The hardest english class I've ever had. I learned a lot but had to endure his ego. Very abrasive, but lets up by the end of the sememster. Most people drop before the end of the semester. Expects 100% every day. No sleeping in the back of class.

There was a lot of work in this class, but I also learned a heck of a lot. Go to class, do the homework, and write the papers, it's worth it. He's a really nice guy and you'll learn a lot from him.

I advise that you take his class as a last resort. If possible, take a different teacher. He dismisses you from class for the smallest things. If your up to date in all your work and listen carefully, and not sleep in class, you will learn a lot. However, his attitude is too harsh and he likes putting students on the spot, not to say that's bad.

Clearly loves the literature he teaches, and encourages students to think about what they are reading. He is quite rigid, his syllabus is 13+ pages long. There is NO open discussion in this class. Quizzes begin on the dot at start of class, dont be late. Hard work will get you a good grade.

He makes the class unnecessary difficult treats students like little children.You have to read around 70 pages for each class, write a journal every day of the week (!), write essays every two weeks, take quizzes every class... unbelievable amount of work. In class he doesn't teach,he talks a lot (he LOVES the sound of his voice) but doesn't teach.

This professor is the most unreal guy I have ever met. He makes quizs that are so incredibly specific to the smallest detail that unless you make flash cards for every one of the 70 pages you have to read your not going to remember. He grades ridiculously hard. Belittles his students. Oh and definitely picks favorits. Worst teacher I have ever had.

He is an extremely strict professor.I don't want to tell you how strict he is,because I have a limited word count.Although Professor Smith is very good at his things and is an academically excellent teacher,DON'T take his class because he is so strict that you largely endanger yourself being dropped.

Ronald Smith is an incredibly tough instructor. If you have any trouble at all with writing or reading comprehension I would give this class a miss. He wants you to do well but he makes it very hard for you to do so. Not a bad guy, just very high expectations. Very hard to get an A.

Guys! I would advise that you choose anyone else BUT Prof smith. He's impossible! Literally made my life difficult. Anything I did was WRONG! He never calls on "Stupid" people. FORCES you to tutoring center for better grade yet doesn't change it. There is a word limit so to keep it short: I WOULDN'T wish him as a professor on my worst enemy!!

Best professor ever. He is not easy at all, but he is a great professor. Professor Smith will drastically improve your reading and writing if you take him. Only take him if you're ready to learn, and become an active reader. I have never felt so confident about my writing until I took this class. I highly recommend him.

I took him for English 205. Very passionate teacher. If you don't have the necessary texts, there's no way you can pass. You HAVE to read. JOURNALS & PERFECT MLA FORMAT ARE HIS LIFE. I passed the class with a "C" but only because I chose not to read & got lazy. Gives extra credit for "No Technology Infractions" & double sided journals.

His reading style is very fast paced, HE DOES NOT PAUSE WHERE PERIODS EXISTS! You will also be writing journal entries every single day, not every class period but every day. When you ask for help he is constantly saying he has to run to another college and does not have time. He is very serious about NO TECHNOLOGY.

Journals everyday and EXCESS quizzes on trivial text. Unbelievably-high standards, yet ill-qualified. You don't ignore mistakes on a rough draft then deduct 30% on the final draft because of them. I was one of the few souls who DIDN'T have to go to tutoring after my first draft, so why was it a 50%? Pretty intimate 1-on-1 when everyone drops, tho.

Very difficult. Teaches english right out of the handbook and makes you read every night so keep up with that. Overall, yes his class was difficult but he really does prepare you for university. I thought I was failing towards the end, but he gives enough EC that I somehow ended up with a B. If you are worried of need help, go to him!

The professor himself is a pretty cool person. However, his class is very difficult. He is tough compared to other professors, but his goal is to make sure you learn the objectives of the course. He won't simply give you a good grade because you pay to be there. You are required to put in maximum effort to receive a high grade.

He is indeed a difficult professor but i surely learned a lot from him. His class was the only class i ever took so much time for. If you don't want to take more than the usual amount of time to study for this class, you should not take him as prof. But if you want to be motivated and learn a lot, then take his class.

Smith is obsessed with the idea of grade inflation and thinks that all grades are padded, except his. Ironic, since he offers a grade and half worth of extra credit. Frequently received D's and F's on my papers and was accused of plagiarism more then once. Feedback is weak and not helpful. Suggested people drop the class when they ask for help.

This professor believes he is the all knowing when it comes to community college English. He will give the entire class a D on their papers to motivate them to do better on revisions. He thinks that grade inflation is a huge problem on education but still offers a grade and a half of extra credit. Do not take this class.

Beyond pretentious, cuts off students when they're asking questions and makes sure to pick on students he deems unworthy. Work load is fine but he isn't specific about what he wants, feed back on papers is belittling instead if helpful, will make something wrong with no input on what exactly is wrong about it. Passionate about lit but not teaching.

He is the most unreasonable professor I have ever had, very by-the-books. Frequently talks over kids in class while they are answering him, yells at students, and prints out WAY too many hand outs... I'm talking probably close to 150. Be prepared to read a lot, do a lot of research and write a lot. Do not take any of his classes.

Very difficult. Class started half full, ended with about 8 students. I was the only one to receive an A, & it was NOT easy. You will develop stronger writing skills but he is unnecessarily brutal. Professor Smith is a poor excuse for an educator. His style of portraying the material is in no way, shape or form constructive. He does not teach, he instills fear in his students with a condescending approach. You HAVE to do so much studying, reading, researching, and homework to get even a C. Requires two textbooks at every class (mandatory attendance). NGL, I dreaded going to class. Low key gave me anxiety thinking about if I missed homework or a reading assignment (there are quizzes). I learned a lot, and he wrote me a rec. Take him for a challenge.

Dont even bother. Its kind of shocking that the school continues to allow him to teach here, but it is what it is. Expect extremely difficult assignments, with extreme instructions, and close to no help what so ever. Dont ask questions, because hell bring you down & wont answer it. Most assignments are handed out, and almost set for failure.

Prof. smith is never satisfied with your work and always has something negative to say about your best efforts. At times it would seem like he expected us to know the information that he was supposed to teach us. Prof. Smith would speak to students in a condescending manner, and never encouraged his students... I didn't enjoy this class at all...

Professor Smith improved my writing skills tremendously. However, his reading quizzes are difficult if you do not use active reading. For essays, he does give good feedback if you structure and format correctly, along with applying what you learned in class. I only recommend this course if you are an experienced writer bc it is a challenge!!

For a English 101 course it was extroadinarily hard. I lost a great deal of confidence and sleep over the class. Grading was too subjective and personal. Overall this course led to an overwhelming large level of stress along with all my other courses.

Don't take this class if you want to learn anything. Attendance is mandatory but his lectures are essentially useless. Does not teach. Only plays youtube videos on how to embed quotes (THE ENTIRE SEMESTER). His grading criteria makes no sense. He discusses what he expects on your papers but then grades them on a completely different basis.

Show up & participate & you're guaranteed at least a B. He gives super specific notes on what corrections need to be made on papers (only 3 papers total!) so just follow this step by step cheat sheet and You'll get an easy A. Keeps grades low all semester to keep you dedicated then adds participation extra credit at the end. Went from a C to an A.

Professor Smith is the only teacher who inspired me to enjoy reading and writing. I don't know about other students who seem to have a grudge against him, but I learned more about reading and writing in one semester than I did in 4 years of high school! I read most of Mr. Smith's on RMP and I am mortified! Those reviews don't describe the class I've taken because my time in ENGL 101 has been great. Extra credit is given for particpation. With participation and written assignments you can earn a B. He makes it easy to learn and pass his class. He covers a lot, but it benefits you in the long run.

Professor Smith is ultimately a great professor if you apply yourself in his class. There is weekly in class group work, along with homework and a total of three essays that are simple. ENG100 is the first class that has set me up for success in and out of the classroom. Prof. Smith teaches amazing skills that give a new understanding about multiple ways of thinking. Mr.Smith was great! He gives amazing lectures on interesting topics and hands out free readings so there's no book cost! There are many group activities worth lots of points. I don't know about any past students who rated Mr. Smith so low, but that wasn't my experience. Maybe they didn't self-advocate with him. The professor I had was the best, so kind, caring, compassionate, and helpful. Mr. Smith reached out to me and was willing to work around my hectic schedule and offer the extra help I needed. Smith is very essay heavy + tough grader. I had some personal issues that he was kind of understanding of but aside from that, he expects unrealistic amount of work. He left feedback saying to write on a college level when this is a freshman reading and writing class with little to no support! His directions were overbearing and not simplified. RUN

Smith is a great teacher if you like someone who is extremely hard on you. Personally he's not for me and a lot of students. He talks down to his class when things don't go his way instead of trying to understand where his students are coming from. There is no seeing eye to eye, it's his way or a bad grade. This teaching rarely works in today's age

The only class where you can genuinely try and end up with a max grade of 75%. The class is essay and journal-heavy. The feedback given seems like a copy-and-paste, disingenuous response that's given to all students. Even if you follow all directions, he will still nitpick and find a way to lower your grade. Made my 1st year of college terrible.

Coming straight from high school, I struggled in the fall '24 and spring '25 semesters at Mesa. But Prof. Smith sets his students up for success and makes it easy to contact him about anything in his class or even in college overall. He was an excellent teacher, but I wouldn't recommend him to students who want to maintain high GPAs. As for personal experience, he definitely teaches me a lot, but as much as I learn, I lose my grades while attending the lecture. About his teaching style, he teaches with a lot of paper reading and writing. also includes 10 group work projects.

If any students decide to take Ronald Smith as a professor in the future you need to know that everytime you raise your hand to talk you get extra credit (20 points). Also be careful when you do the Journal Entry's and assignments to read the instructions carefully so you don't lose points on any of the assignments. Also meet with him office hours

I really don't understand where all these overwhelmingly positive reviews which seem to have appeared same time came from.This is just a basic reading and writing course, and yet he demands graduate-level writing almost from day one!
