jokes make the class fun, but work is very independant ..read everything!
Very informative
he is my arch-nemesis, i do not recommend
I do not recommend
GREAT guy. He was very informative and taught me so much even though I am elected. He has a very difficult class, so be ready to work. His lectures rock and I would be glued to him. Allows lots of expressions of opinions and is open minded!
he is a very interesting man. he is intimidating, but you will learn a lot from him. Tests are hard!
He is a great professor that gives amazing lectures. He has so much to offer. His knowledge of the subject is very impressive. Be ready to take a good notes-very helpful on his tests, skiping class doesn't help in that case.
Great lectures! Stockton has a great deal of knowledge, and Comparative Government with him is one class that people shouldn't miss. Yes, the exams are hard, but the lectures more than compensate for that.
He is by far my favorite professor. Everyone should take one of his classes at least one. He is interesting and has great lectures. His tests are hard though and he does expect you to do all of the readings.
I can not stress enough how important it is for people in this major to take this professor. His lectures and handouts are the best, and his back ground knowledge is unsurpassed. This is my fifth class with him, and they were all great, even though I never aced anything. Simply the best.
the class requires lots of reading and he expects you to read it ALL. He is unclear about what the tests are over but his lectures are usually pretty good.
Lots of reading, and he's not always clear about assignments/tests. Lectures are good, but he's tough and requires alot of work. I wouldn't take him again.
Very nice man, but lectures are pretty boring. He expects you to know ALL the material. If you take this class I recommend you memorize the notes and the book.
Very twisted from what he wants on tests and what he teachs in class. Stickler who starts class early and ends class late.
class is 3 hours long, yet he starts 10 minutes early and holds up to 20 late and berates those who come in on time, repeats useless info 5 times a class, boring and dry speaker, coursepack is about 10,000 pages long and u need to know ALL of it,tests not related to what we learn, try another prof.
Stockton is probably one of the best teachers I've ever had. His lectures are intruiging if you enjoy the subject. He is also one of the hardest professors in the subject field, so only take him if youre ready to read a huge coursepack and a large book.
He is a very interesting person. His lectures run a bit long though. Be prepared for constant note taking. He gives alot of quizes too. This is not a bad thing because there is only one paper to write and one essay question. Overall, not bad.
the most disorganized professor on this campus. him and Wayman are buddies Jumps from one point to the next. Up to this point i was a 4.0 student. Try to avoid him, and if u cant try to balance your schedule so that u have time for 2 giant coursepacks and a big book, and constant note-taking. G-luck
not clear on what is on the tests, a lot of reading, but he is a nice guy and makes the class intristing but this is as close to a c as i have ever gotten i got an 82%
This professor takes weeks to return exams, is late to class, completely unorganized, forgets necessary paperwork and has trouble staying on topic. He's a man with a vast amount of knoweldge who has trouble getting it organized and articulating what he needs to say. Beware of the tests.
Prof. Stockton is smart, interesting, nice. He has interesting lectures though sometimes it got boring. There's lots of notes to take. The reading load was too heavy (ie Germany- 6 chapters & supplementary reading). Tests were difficult despite Multiple Choice & it took him over a week to return it.
An amazing teaher, I learned a lot in this class. He is not as bad as people make him sound. Yes there is a lot of reading, but it is a 300 level class, what do u expect. He is a amazing guy, take him atleast once.
reach course. Would not respond to my emails. After 1st failed test, he responded. I was a 3.8 student, got a D+ in this horrible class. He is horrible!!! Run, don't walk to another class.
ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ NUFF SAID
Stockton is a lost man...He just talks and talks, he assigns readings, gives no true direction on them, then just gets smarmy and makes jokes about Pres. Bush...Complete arrogance, calling world leaders idiots, when he himself is a disorganized and forgetful old fool...
Great, very cool prof. Sure, he makes you work, but that's what college is supposed to be about.
The Good News: Lectures are fascinating; you'll learn a LOT about religion and politics. Plenty of amusing anecdotes, too! The Bad News: Exams are very poorly worded, so even if you've studied for hours and have the material down cold, you stand a good chance of picking the wrong answers and getting a low grade. Warning: NOT FOR THE CLOSED-MINDED.
I entered this class with hope; I left with none. He made me despise the analysis of religion, stating that his course was not designed for anyone who was not either Christian, Jewish, or Muslim, and yet clearly expecting even these "people of the book" to be able to draw on a repetoir of overly obscure concepts to understand the Cpack. Avoid him!
Great prof. Very knowledgable, and will allow contrarian view points but expects sound reasoning. Pol 201-show up, take notes, read cp you will be okay on exam, text optional. Pol 450 show up, read cp, participate in discussions, take time to care about and support your writing with class material and you will do fine. PolSci majors should take him
Thinks that his class is the only one you're taking, expects way too much from his students. Take good notes, write down every single detail he mentions, what he does not stress on will most likely appear on the exam. If you can avoid him, by all means do so. he knows a lot, but what is the point if he cant organize his thoughts?
Very interesting teacher. He tests could be pretty tough but I consider him to be the best teacher I've had so far. He was also pretty fair. If everyone did bad on a test he would either give it a pretty good curve or have us retake a slightly different version of the first test. I plan on trying to take another class he teaches.
He's a great guy, knows a lot and has been practically everywhere. Unfortunately, as a professor he's not that great. There's no schedule to go by so DON'T MISS CLASS! Little facts show up on the exam. Exams tend to be confusing even if you know your stuff. He's not organized. Still, the materials and lectures are very interesting.
By far the most interesting class I've taken so far @ UM-D. Prof. Stockton's really awesome; his lectures are always both entertaining and very informative. I really want to take him again! In a distinguished, extremely well-preserved Bob Barker-like fashion, he's not bad looking, either. You'll have to study hard for exams, but it's worth it.
This class was very interesting and challengning. He grades hard on the essays, but they are all take-home, and the tests are all m.c. Write down everything and do not miss class. You'll do well in this class if you read and pay attention!! : )
Although he isn't really hard, his lectures are often unorganized and rambling. Frequently wastes class time expressing his own extreme political views. A real America basher too.
I would not say he is extreme or an "America basher", actually his views are quite interesting and patriotic. However, I do not take classes to listen to an ideologue, so it bothers me to have to sit and listen to my tuition dollars being wasted to promote a political view. His tests are not tests of knowledge but rather tests obscure details.
very biased, unclear, and unorganized. tests are very detailed, not having to do with understanding the topic, but rather memorization. knows a lot, but does not know how to pass it on, assuming that the class knows everthing he is referring to.
Stockon is one of the worst teachers at UMD. Regardless of how hard you study for a test, there is no way to do well. He asks the most ridiculous questions, and is the most unhelpful teacher. All of class time is spent listening to him ramble about his friends in Parliment and his good friend Madeline Albright. Don't take this guy. He sucks.
Worst PS Prof @ UMD. Bashes U.S. and only talks about his liberal views & the friends he supposedly knows all around the world. Should teach about the subject & not about his views. Exams are very hard & syllabus/readings do not follow lecture. Very unfair grader, bias, and NEVER responds to e-mails for help.
This teacher is the most amazing guy I have ever known. Ever since the first day of class I have been preaching to everyone to take his class. If you actually want to go to college and learn something then you should take him. some people complain that he is hard but they dont read anything. He is veryy fair. and if u study u will do good!!!
Comparative government was a solid class, yet frustrating. I studied my ass off and didn't always get the pay off taking detailed notes, there are many conflictions with reality and what he gives for a course pack and text book. Class is interesting but rather hard due to somewhat odd test questions. Still suggested from me.
Nice, friendly, helpful. However, syllabus does not correspond with the class. Exam questions come from the textbook, lecture, and the coursepack. Very difficult to know what to study. Memorize the statistics in lecture. Exams test trivial knowledge. He will try to pull a few fast ones on the exam to see how closely you were listening.
This man seems to be a bit arrogant but has a bunch of interesting life stories to tell the class, however these stories tend to take up most of the class time leaving little time for lecture, honestly all you have to do is pay close attention to when he is lecturing and read and you'll do fine.
Very hard class if you come into it without Middle East or Jewish background. He talks too fast and makes too many jokes. Is unforgiving at test time, so you have to catch on fast to testing style. He will have a ton of material and you are expected to match 4 words to describe a war. Good info, but would advise another class if possible!
Professor Stockton is a an ideologue and has no problem wasting class time promoting his values. test are frequent and difficult, and the syllabus is worthless as he makes up the class as he goes along. Also, he makes tests hard intentionally (they are multiple choice) by putting guestions on that test your attention to detail. TAKE SOMEONE ELSE
This guy is everything a prof should be. I always looked forward to his lectures. His exams and papers are tough but very fair. He is just the most amazing prof I've ever had! Also, the coursepack for the class is extremely valuable and interesting!
Gives a very biased account of the world, not necessarily one that I disagree with, but nonetheless very biased. He just spends way too much time emphasizing his world view. Lots of quizzes and tests, most of which are scantron. He is tricky with questions, and his questions test your reading ability, not your knowledge of the subject.
Professor Stockton Has a teaching style that makes learning hard. His tests have trick questions on them and he pushes his agenda constantly. Unless you are willing to put twice the effort you should have to into this class you will regret taking it.
Stockton is awesome. A real provacateur who structures his class around the goal of making kids think critically, - a cliche objective but with an effective and unique style. His lectures are never boring, filled with anecdotes, like listening to your grandpa. The only complaint is he is sometimes off on tangents and class doesnt appear well str
Professor Stockton is an amazing professor. Granted his classes are challanging but if u put in the effort, it is not impossible to get an A. Take his classes if you want to learn how to think and have an educated opinion. Highly recommended.
VERY interesting guy! He might not be the easiest professor on campus and you have to put in the effort, it's worth it if you're interested in world affairs and politics. Great lectures, fun to listen to!
STOCKTON!!!! <3 Good stories, but he goes off on tangents. Read the course pack over WELL.
OMFG. Academic Rockstar. I would hit it.
He’s a brilliant professor and knows more than any other Professor I have had at UMD. spends a great deal of time pushing his political views while dismissing questions or opinions which may contradict his opinion. I may not disagree with his political views but it’s a waste of tuition dollars to listen to an ideologue preach his political views.
professore stockton is SO INTERESTING. i walk out of his class 2x a week with so many new facts and interesting things about the world and current events. he is a fair man, not to prone to any prejudice of any kind. but, he kinda keeps u in class overtime loses track of time. but, all in all, hes a great teacher and i recomend him to anyone
Professor Stockton wastes tuition $$ by preaching his views. He gives frequent tests & quizzes that are pointless and test only your ability to memorize insignificant details and his pointless stories.
this profesor is incredible! Best professor I've had at u of m, not afraid to say anything if it is relevant to politics.
Do not take this class! Stockton is a tenured professor who is pompous and tells offensive jokes. He doesn?t seem to care about students and acts like it?s an imposition if you visit him during his office hours. The exams are difficult and very tricky. I should have listen to the other reviews, don?t make the same mistake or you will regret it.
if u care about learning new things, take stockton, if you care about ur grade dont take him. all the notes i took in his class were useless on his exams, me and some classmates agreed that he is a horrible teacher, but he is very knowledgable. he knows alot of facts on world views, and i actually liked his class but the exams were horrible
Just not worth it, avoid Stockton if at all possible. Tests are short and tricky M/C, T/F covering detailed facts on hundreds of pages of reading. He grades on a strict 4.0, 3.0, 2.0 scale with no +s or -s. No curves or breaks.
This professor is the best, he is so smart and knows what he is talking about. very interesting, the class it self is not easy but he is not a hard grader but you must read the required readings to do good on his exams. its true he doesnt gives + or - but if you show improvement he will move you from let say a C+ to a B-, or from a B to a B+.
Way too political. Spends most days preaching his far left ideals. Always says "let me give you some 'facts'" but doesn't give the whole story of the "facts" context.
I love Stockton and loved his class! Even though I got a B+ (yes, he does give + and - sometimes) I learned so much. He really knows a lot about the subjects he's teaching, but if you want an easy A with a flimsy professor, DO NOT take him.
Prof. Stockton is the best in the Political Science Department, by far. He's brilliant, and knows how to teach students so they understand. I loved his lectures, class time always used well. He's incredible, fair, interesting, and a serious professor. If you prepare, read, listen to his lectures, you will do well in his class. One of UMD's FINEST!
He is a great teacher, very smart and knowledgeable. He is a challenge, you have to read and you have to take notes in lecture to do good. You can't be bias but you have to read and prove the writers point. Would take him again
Good but Hard. Never an easy A. Knows the subject well but often trails off into a story of some sort that is mostly pointless. Expresses his views often and is very one sided on Political issues. Must attend classes to do well!!!
Great Teacher!!! will challenge you and make you learn a lot! but overall you get a real good sense of everything that he teaches you. hardly a dull moment in class too.
Wasn't too sure about him at first, but he really is a great guy! Go to his office hours & get to know him! Very understanding prof. Tough exams, attendance not required, but definitely a must if you want that A or B grade!
The man is brilliant!!! Seriously he is a living encyclopedia. His class is challenging; and by no means an easy A. However, if you love learning and/or love politics take him. If your trying to get through college with 'easy A's" than dont!
Probably one of the worst professors I have ever had. His lectures are long and boring, he constantly brags about the places hes been like we are supposed to be impressed. My 5 year old sister has better handwriting then him, his lecture notes are unreadable, and his lectures never stay on track. Do not take this professor for...well...anything.
Best teacher on Campus. By far the most cultured man I have met. Has a story (yes they are relevant)for every section he teaches. I will definitely take him again. If you actually take notes and pay attention you cannot fail.
Dr. Stockton is the smartest man alive. He demands alot from his students, but this is college. If your looking for easy A dont take. If you actually value your education, and are willing to work hard and learn definately take. He is extremely knowledgeable and fun to take!!
PRO- "He knows his stuff" CON- He wants you to know it too...ALL of it! Overall I can say I truely learned alot but I payed a huge price to get it...You can't miss a moment of what he says because it will be on the test. His lectures are really hard to follow at times especially if the material is new to you. BE PREPARED TO WORK
He tests on rather random facts and not concepts. Your grade is like the lottery. He's a nice enough guy but steer clear of his classes.
I have had Professor Stockton for a number of classes and would take him again if he taught every subject. One of the most knowledgeable and well educated professors here. Hard grader but takes an interest in seeing his students succeed. Would seriously recommend taking him at least once during your college career.
Very cool, knowledgable professor. Class attendance and text book reading are mandetory for getting a good grade, although they do not provide any guarantee. He tests you mostly on random facts and points he makes in the lecture. I'm an A student and I had to work hard to get an A in this class. Also, he's very liberal and not shy about it.
I've taken two of his classes, and I will say this: lots of students do poorly in his classes. But I must reiterate as many have said before, if you value your education and have genuine interest in politics (esp. Middle East politics) then you MUST take his classes. If political science is not your thing, don't take it, an easy A lurks elsewhere.
He is the very worst at U of M-Dearborn. He did not help my political science education in any way. I was going to do an internship until taking his class.
I've had two classes with Prof Stockton and I think he is very knowledgable, interesting, and a fair grader. If you come to class, take good notes and study, you will do well.
As long as you participate in his class, you will do fine. He creates a challenging environment. The only part that can trip you up, are the exams...as long as you study, you are good to go.
AMAZINGGGGG professors... Just show up and READ and you will be fine. His classes are very interesting and I love when he shares stories from the MILLIONS of places he's been =D
The very best if you are really committed. I took him for two classes. The first time, I thought that the tests were kind of random and that he was kind of mean. The second time, I actually did all the reading and found out the tests are to see if you "really" get it. He's pretty hard and kind of old school. Saying he is liberal is silly.
Very good teacher, one of the best in the honors program
Great class overall. The readings aren't entirely necessary (he goes over them pretty well in class), but taking the time to power through them in depth can only make your grade better. If you are willing to put the effort into the class you will get what you want out of it, RS is a great professor who really knows his stuff and grades fairly.
His readings were mostly genuinely stimulating and worth reading. You get a 4-page paper every few weeks, easy stuff. Going to his class, though, is painful. He teaches by making you read passages from the text. One day he made us read his memoirs and discuss them during class time. Felt like I was wasting almost every second I spent in his class.
Excellent teacher, the reading material covers a wide range of controversial topics. Discussion based class, as long as you do the readings this class is fun and a breeze. Also, he added in a graveyard field trip instead of holding the last class. One of the better professors in the University.
Seriously, best teacher I've ever had. He is so interesting, his class is interesting, the reading materials are interesting. His tests are easy, as are his essays. He's always available to help the students. And he's really cool.
Took him for a 8 week Spring class. Lots of reading, but extremely interesting material. Handful of papers, fairly short and easy exams. If you're a Political Science major, you should seriously consider taking this class. Very good material covered by an excellent professor.
90% of the class was sitting in a circle waiting for someone to say something about the readings. I would have hoped that the teacher in an honors class would have had more interesting ideas to share. Essay topics are easy. The class isn't hard if you already made it this far in the program, but every session feels like three wasted hours.
This class was ok. The grade consist of a few tests and a few papers. The tests are hard, but the papers are easy. The tests are a lot of vocabulary on the foreign countries you learn about, making it hard to memorize words that aren't English. They are kind of short and gives you a little heads up. His papers are due during strange days and times
Stockton is an amazing professor. He is very knowledgeable about the material and has a good sense of humor. He also has plenty of stories to tell that keep you interested. The material from his quizzes are mostly from the lecture. He also requires a few two page papers. An A is totally attainable if you put in a good effort.
Do not take this class if you are looking to discuss politics or religion in politics. The name of the class is misleading as all you do is discuss history of religions. That being said he is a nice guy, and its really not that hard. He gives you a study guide before tests. As long as you take notes and do the study guides, you should be fine.
Easy class, all you have to do is wikipedia the topics before the quizzes and pay attention in class. A few papers which can be done the night before. Not a tough grader. Class can get dull at times. This class was about religion and he's an atheist so he does attack every religion but he isn't a bigot at all.
Professor Stockton is a great professor. Just like any college course, you have to study. Exams can be tough if you do not study. I recommend Professor Stockton for a Political Science course.
Wealth of knowledge if you are willing to listen. One paper, four exams. Great class!
Stockton is an incredibly knowledgeable professor, and he's also hilarious in a sarcastic way. Quizzes are easy to pass if you show up and take notes, "exams" are in the form of SHORT essays. There's quite a bit of reading but I didn't have to buy a single book. I hope to take more classes with him.
Prof was cool, interesting and very knowledgeable. He rambles a lot, and we barley got through 12 the syllabus. Was a 3 hour night class and could get dry on days. But deff worth the take, pretty easy class
Basically, you have to write down everything he says in lecture and writes on the board. Do this, and you won't have too much trouble. It's very possible to get an A. As long as you take thorough notes and study them, you'll be fine. He doesn't take attendance, but you should come to class or else you'll miss a lot.
Great guy, very knowledgeable and makes good attempts to be funny during lecture. Write down everything he says though. No joke everything. Re read those notes that is how you study. The chat he has us participate in weekly on canvas is stupid and pointless though, but counts as your participation grade. Not bad overall
Dr. Stockton is one of the most knowledgeable professors on campus when it comes to the material he specializes in. The classes are entertaining and very informative - don't skip! You have to work for it, but an A is totally attainable. Don't skip the weekly Chat's - each week's post is a point which adds up. Don't miss class and take good notes.
Great professor, really knows his stuff which makes lectures extremely interesting. Only problem is that everything he says in class is fair game for the exam but if you listen closely and take extensive notes you're guaranteed an A. Love this guy, definitely recommend!
Stockton is a wonderful man and knows the subject matter through and through. Go to class, listen, and write what he says. His tests have extremely straight forward answers so you either know it or you don't. If you pay attention and take notes, you can get an easy A.
Don't take him, please.
I would take him again in a heart beat. Attendance is a must. He will save you $ by posting the articles on Canvas to read but please read them, test questions come directly from notes and those articles. Good at listing to students point of view. Highly respect this professor!! go to class, read, participate and listen you can't fail.
Very smart and funny guy who focused in this area, so very knowledgeable. Most of the grade is based on weekly exams that you can pass/get a good grade on pretty easily by paying attention in lecture and doing light reading. Not an unbiased lecturer, but it happens. Extra credit available. Just make sure to study hard and you'll pass.
Stockton leans left, oh well. you can take his opinions with a grain of salt. His teaching style is unorthodox to say the least, but it's great in my opinion. Im taking his 385 class next semester. I'd say he is a solid choice. Tests are a tad hard but doable. work hard get an A.
The first exam is brutal, however once you get further into the course it becomes worthwhile. Not well organized and doesn't post grades online. Everything he says has a possibility to end up on an exam. No textbook for the class however posts multiple texts online that are necessary to read. Not the worst professor but definitely not the best.
Best professor I have ever taken, coming from a Bio major. He is knowledgable, intelligent and hilarious. Anyone who complains about this class doesn't listen to him in lecture. I listened in lecture, revised for 15 minutes before each exam and got an A. No textbook, just his lectures. Take him, you will not regret it.
I've had Professor Stockton for multiple classes now. He's an incredible professor, he really values students and makes them feel well respected. If you take detailed notes in this class and do the reading, you'll get A's or B's on the exams and on the papers. There are lots of exams, but they're not bad because he gives you exams per 1 chapter.
He doesn't use a book so you have to attend class in order to know what's going on. When he lectures its like all over the place, chat on canvas is required. He does email certain articles dealing with lecture.
No textbook, everything is lecture based with no slideshow or notes provided. He writes important terms on chalkboard. Miss a lecture and you won't know a section of the exam questions. No clear schedule, random short notices for exams, quizzes, and papers.
Doesn't require a book but never stops talking, and is a literal dinosaur. He has a lot of interesting stories but the tests are hard.
My god please do not take his class. Literally does not write anything on the board
Dr. Stockton's class is incredibly difficult but you will learn so much from it. He cares about his students, notices when you're absent, and tries to help you catch up. I could listen to his lectures for days. Everyone should have at least one class with him before graduating. Such a gem to this university.
I failed a paper and still got an A cause he lets you rewrite if you do poorly. Show up to class and take notes on EVERYTHING he says and you will do really well on exams. Exams are not book heavy, more lecture based but it helps to read a bit. He's a very kind professor and very knowledge. Go to office hours, he values it and will help you.
Class is all lecture, has no real structure to them, and are extremely boring. Write EVERYTHING down, anything he says is fair game on an exam. Very few assignments so most of your grade will be based on the difficult exams. If you have to take this class I would highly recommend a different professor.
If you have the opportunity to take Professor Stockton, DO IT! He is so passionate about politics and whats going on in the world, he makes it very enjoyable. Other than not using the online grading system regularly, I have no complaints. Going to class is very important, but you wont regret it and he is always available outside of class!
Go to every class, write down every single thing he says, and participate. That's what you need to do well in Stockton's class. He's a little all over the place but his lectures can be pretty interesting. You'll learn a lot! He appreciates people who engage and genuinely make an effort. He's a pretty fair grader too!
He made us read his memoir and write an essay comparing his life to Abraham Lincoln's. In addition to that, I was set to meet with him and another student at his office hours to go over a discussion we'd be leading. When I got to his office he didn't remember making an appointment with us and asked me to leave
The comments on his attitude here seem far off. I thought Stockton was very easygoing and a pleasure to work with. There was a quiz every week and a paper every 3 or so. After we had to go remote that became a paper a week. The reading is somewhere around 60 pages a week, not too bad. Make sure to follow instructions on papers to the letter.
Which other class can quote The Godfather, have students who are ex Special Forces, and has stories from politicians around the world? Had his class 20+ years ago and still use his lectures and stories in day-to-day discussions. Ask him about the Uganda Scheme.
