not clear .. does not seek out students for their best effort .. does not like communicating with his students .. bad at lecture
Super-nerd, antisocial, there is more to teaching than just lecturing...student teacher relationship is like making love to a wall.
what?! he is an excellent teacher, very nice and fair
not bad overall approachable, friendly. he knows everything there is to about this teacher. his exams are fair, studying is a must but if you keep up with the workhis class is no problem plus if u get the chance to meet with him he is a pretty nice guy
No Comments
um .. no help what so ever and horrible at lecture .. there def needed to be more student-teacher interactions and he could've at least PRETENDED to be teaching us something at lecture instead of speaking to himself the whole time.
Dr Strothkamp is a wonderful teacher. He is extremely clear when he explains the lab procedures. He is a slightly difficult grader but I still definitely recommend him
Nice man, once you get to know him. Sometimes seems a little distance, but easy to go to for. In lecture and lab are clear, go over material to help you pass. Must work though, always keep up with the homework and lectures- it helps.
If you need to start all over with chemistry, don't take him. He is clear with his writing but that's it. no prof-student rel. at all. keeps a distance.
The survey course to biochemistry was by far the best lecture Ive ever had at Hofstra, and I was a straight bio major. Always willing to help, and really has a lecture style that ensures youll learn the material. Recommended with no reservations
this course is equivalent to 10th grade high school chemistry, if you have taken chem in high school try and skip right to organic chem. teacher talks down to student, but is very knowledgable and will answer any question. albeit rudely
Complete disregard if you have a problem. No interaction with students at all. God forbid he spoke to you while looking you in the face. Very discouraging to have a professor not even try to talk AT you. I am extreamly dissapointed with this class.
He is a very good teacher but will never look his students in the face. I don't think he knows anyones name in the class. As long as you take all quizes and tests, that is all that matters.
Yes, this man is definitely socially inept. However, easy tests, very clear and if you fail his cours, you did it to yourself. he does not try to trick the student at all, everything is from the material he teaches, clear as day
This is one of the greatest lectures I have ever met. Class is a neccesity because If you have ever tried to ask him a question one on one he has a panic attack and flips out on you. My advice is take him if you plan on going to every class and do the homework the night before the quizes.
he is a real good guy the class is hard but that is chem in general. he is helpful and really knows what he is talking about. if you for what ever reason want to take chem i ould reccommend taking it with him
Great Professor. Very clear and organized. He really knows what he's talking about. If you do the work you do fine (There is a bit of it). You will def learn something in this class. If you fail, you have noone to blame but yourself!
Absolutely not easy, not helpful. Cannot interact with students. Not helpful at all...Whom ever posted these posts before either are very good chemist, I did great in HS, college is more difficult always....absolutely not easy not helpful can't say it enough!
Very nice professor who knows his stuff very well. He is very good at teaching and you will learn a lot. Take this course with him and you won't regret it.
Only prof that actually teaches chem, take it with him and you won't regret it. Pay attention in class and you won't have to spend extra time at home teaching yourself the subject. :)
he is TERRIBLE. so boring! he gets upset when you ask questions and is very condescending. i hate him. NEVER again.
this man was not very clear. If you ask questions you will be immediately shut down. After all, the reason why you took this course is because you already know everything he is supposed to teach you right?
The man will never look you in the face. He's not a horrible teacher but sometimes he seems to teach the material too fast. His tests are fair not extremely hard and most of the time he curves them. If you do your homework every night and study hard you should get at least a B+
He is a very good teacher. He knows what he is talking about. Although he does not interact at all with his students, if youhave any questions you can go to him after class and he takes his time to help you. Just do all the problems he assigns and stdy for his quizzes and you will do well on his exams. =)
if your required to take chem and are interested in the field, then this class would be fine for you. however if your just filling a science requirement do not take this class youll fall asleep
He teaches the subject very well in his lessons....if u study for his quizzes and do the hw probs you will do fine......
This professor is great. He coherently explains everything, even though he does not interact with his students. However, if you do ask for help after class, he is always ready to do so. But remember to do the problems he assigns, study his quizzes for exams, and exams for the final. YOU WILL DO FINE, EVEN GREAT.
His class is SO boring!!! I fell asleep every time. However his tests and quizzes are extremely easy. Just do the homework and you'll get an A. He doesn't look at any of the students. And he's funny looking.
This professor is excellent. He is a brilliant man who can explain the material quite well; uses logical, relevant analogies and occasionally does a few experiments during class which are fun:) Although he does not interact with his students very well, he is ALWAYS available for extra help and WILL help you if you ask! So don't be shy!!
He couldn't care less about his students as individuals. Don't bother going to him for help, you'll just feel like a burden. Go to his class then talk to ANYONE else for help. I recommend Dr. Ryan.
he is so cute, he really enjoys what he teaches so it makes his students enjoy it..as much as possible..it is still chem
He tends to zip through the material very quickly. Not a good class to take if you're the type of person who needs more time when it comes to dealing with chemistry. He's also quite boring and doesn't really make an effort to help you out, unless you make it a point that you really need his help.
He is sooo cute!!I had so much fun in his class. He is a little boring but his guizzes are easy and he is extremely fair. I am taking him def again!
Adorably awkward. Very helpful. Sympathetic to the chemistry-incapable, such as myself. If you show that you're trying, and talk to him, he takes that into consideration. He really enjoys seeing the lightbulb go off in your head. Just LISTEN to his talks before the lab and you'll do fine.
He comes off as a creeper but honestly he's a cutie. Though he is socially awkward (won't look at you). But he is SO helpful and smart, don't be afraid to ask him to clarify something. He is a very fair grader, even if you kinda know what your doing you'll be okay. Def. one of the best out there.
He is crystal clear and an excellent teacher. Tests are fair, quizzes are never outrageous, he curves liberally, and if you complete (and understand) the homework you will probably do well. He's a bit robotic and distant from his students but as a professor he conveys the material well and that's good enough for me.
Biochem with Prof Strothkamp was not too bad. some of the material is repetitive from other bio classes but he was always enthusiastic about the material which made the lectures not too bad. didnt get to study much (tests were fair with generous curves) because of work but still ended up pulling off an A-. I would def take another class with him!
Dr. Strothkamp is phenomenal. He is interesting, funny, really friendly, and helpful. I really enjoyed my class with him.
Hands down hardest class I ever took at Hofstra, although I don't think it was the prof's fault. He curved fairly and never took attendance which is cool, but doing the hw was ESSENTIAL to doing well on tests. Fair grader, I pulled off a B+
great professor, presents everything clearly and logically. drops your 2 lowest quizes and doesn't take attendance. got an A- and worked really hard. Wish i Could've taken him for Chem 4a. if you have a choice for who to take...PICK HIM.
took him for lab and he is the BEST! He knows everything and is very helpful. He's also very calm and won't rush you.. helps with the prelab and procedures, explains what's on the quizzes, available for help almost always.. AWESOME! not impossible to get an A!
Phenomenal professor. Dr. Strothkamp could teach chemistry to a 2-year old. He is extraordinarily thorough and clear, always willing to answer questions.
Great Professor! He is such a sweet person who loves chemistry and is very thorough with his notes. I recommend doing the hw problems he assigns. I had him last semester and i honestly didn't open the textbook. If you study the notes and do the practice problems you should do well! highly recommended!
One of the best professors I have ever taken at Hofstra. Very clear with all of his notes, and extremely helpful. Do the assigned problems and study his notes and you will ace his class. His grading policy is very fair. The quizzes are extremely fair. His tests are based on everything he teaches in class. Didn't need to use the textbook much.
This man is like a walking text book. He has memorized all pH values, atomic weights, pka's, Ka's, Kb's, logarithms, derivatives, and lives in 7 dimensions. He is approved for use by ages 9-99 and Im pretty sure if he got cut sparks would come out. long story short take him, you will be added to his hardrive forever.
WHATAGUY. This man knows everything that there is to know about chemistry...It amazes me about how much the human brain can store (he is the perfect example). He's really nice, and it may seem a little awkward when you ask him a question, since he simply..just answers your question. He's a terrific teacher. He can teach chemistry to a 4 year old.
Excellent teacher.
I had him for lab, he's a good teacher, knows everything there is to know about Chemistry, and very helpful. Ended up with a B+ for the class so eh. Quizzes every 3 weeks or so. If you do the hw correctly you should end up with an A
extremely difficult class. he does his best (and succeeds) at conveying the information, but there was so much material to study between exams. quizzes in between the only three exams would've been nice too.
He's really funny
Strothkamp is on his own level when it comes to Chemistry, no other professor at Hofstra can compare. Makes you enjoy the learning process, and he literally sounds like the ultimate textbook during lecture. His notes are organized too and he is usually available outside of class for help. There's also a review day for each test/quiz in class.
Best professor for chemistry. Take him if you are willing to do some work, study, and you will do fine. Grades best 5 of 7 quizes. 3 exams and cumulative final. He will average your 3 exam grades so you get the better grade. Gave us extra time on tests and even final. No attendance or graded homework. Very manageable A.
Strothkamp is very robotic, and teaches the material as is. His class is most days boring, and he does seem very staged in his deliveries. Outside class he is very shy and quiet. In office hours he will solely answer questions and wont make side conversations making it incredibly awkward. He does have an amazing curve though, making it worthwhile
Nice professor, would take again.
This class was super boring but it was pretty easy. Whatever he goes over in class will most definitely be on the test.
He is very smart and very clear. The textbook is your best friend. Overall good professor.
He is a very robotic professor! and one thing about him is he wont look at you. he will make very little eye contact, sometimes he just ignores you. he can be mean at times. And, he is pretty fair in grading at times. If he wants to, he can take off alot of points. and if you just study alot from his textbook questions, you should get an A.
I absolutely love Dr. Strothkamp. He is an excellent teacher. Everything that you need to know, he writes down on the board. All the questions on his quizzes and exams are just like the problems from class or the book. I am taking him again right now for chem 4a. he is amazing.
This man is the boss. Best teacher I have had here at Hofstra. I just wish I had him last semester for Chem 3A. He is crystal clear, writes great notes, has alot of examples and you dont have to read the textbook because he writes everything you need on the board. Just do the questions he assigns and you will do fine.
I absolutely loved the course I took with Dr. Strothkamp. He is extremely clear with lecture has a great curve even though it was not needed and is an overall extremely nice guy. This was the first chemistry course I had at Hofstra and teachers since then have not compared to him. He is very passionate about chemistry. Fantastic class.
Professor Strothkamp knows his stuff. He is a GREAT lecturer and could answer any type of question no matter what. His test curves are huge, and most of his tests are curved like this: 85-100 A 75-84B 65-74C 55-64D or something like that I don't remember too much, but there is a big curve and I would DEFINITELY recommend him for Chem
Such a great professor. He writes everything you need on the board. The book was only necessary just for the questions he assigns. He himself hates the book and gives you better ways to solving each question. He also curves heavily. 85% was an A-, 70% was a B-, 50% was a C- and 40% was a D. Take his class.
Very basic intro to Chemistry. I had taken Chem in high school, so the class was a breeze. He makes it clear and the tests are very straight forward. Quiz almost every week, so good grade boost. No attendance, so not required to go to class but if you do not know Chem would recommend going. Can be a bit boring, but not bad for an intro.
This professor was extremely robotic. Looks right through students and does not bother to help you personally. I regret taking him as a first semester freshman. I felt hopeless in his class. Class isn't mandatory, but some examples he gives are necessary to do well.
He did a good job presenting material. Quiz every week, drops lowest two and tests are similar to quizzes. Honestly, go through textbook and answer chapter examples and you're good to go to get A's and B's on test. He has a beautiful curve and it's easy to be.. "dishonest" on his tests.
Excellent teacher of the no-frills variety. Does a great job of teaching a large amount of information in a short period of time. Conveys the often difficult material as clearly as possible. He is a very fair person and a fair grader. Highly recommend.
Great teacher, do some study and you will be ok, would take again.
He tells you everything you need to know about the lab before you start, so take notes. He does take off points for sig figs and other mistakes, but not too much. He is also lenient about turning in labs late by a day without effecting your grade, but Preliminary Questions are expected at the beginning of lab. Overall, pretty straightforward class.
Dr. Strothkamp is definitely one of the better chemistry professors at Hofstra. He is pretty clear for the most part but he is a VERY tough grader and doesn't give much partial credit. He isn't easy to talk to and doesn't always fully explain things. He would be a better teacher if he was more direct.
In chem 4 he gave 3 tests and 7 quizzes. Each quiz was graded out of 10, and he would drop the lowest 2 so that the quiz average was your best 5. His quizzes are a lot easier than his tests. Do not rely on only his lecture notes and examples for studying. The homework is never checked, but he gives a recitation every week.
Tough teacher, only way to do well is by doing practice problems right after learning the material. Important to keep up with the material because he gives quizzes every week which eventually count as a test grade. No partial credit on his test questions. His questions are similar to the quizzes and stuff he shows you in class. TERRIBLE in officehr
I'm surprised the recent ratings are bad because I think he's one of the better chem profs. You DO have to work hard though. Go to class b/c it's hard to teach the material to yourself. Do all of the hw problems and really understand how to do them. His tests are almost all free response, but that means you get partial credit.
nice guy class is boring tho reads straight from the text book and writes exactly that on the board. weekly quizzes one of the better chem profs hard test kinda tricky but not terrible. pay attention and do the optional questions he gives. hard but doable
Strothkamp is a great chemistry professor. He also has a really fair grading policy. He always explains any questions students have before tests and quizzes. I would definitely take him again
Knows chemistry very well. Lectures from beginning to end of class. Asks for almost no input from students. Reviews before every quiz and test.
The more you do out of class the better. I struggled a lot in the beginning, but when I decided to go and find a tutor it got a lot better. He gives you all of the information just lacks teaching it. Especially where he got some of his numbers from in problems.
He was difficult for students who are not great at math. He flies through equations during class, and doesn't explain the steps as he goes along. He also doesn't allow for questions, and doesn't face the class. He is a great professor for those who have a natural inclination towards math and chemistry, but not for those who need a slower teacher
Good professor, Would've gotten A in the lab if I hadn't choked on the finals which was for the 14 solutions. But nonetheless, I'd take him again as my professor, very nice and knowledgable. Perhaps could be better at explaining some stuff, but thats really nitpicking
Really sweet man and would explain things really well for the most part. He always paused for questions and would explain things better if you asked. Homework wasn't graded, but it helps to do it. All homework questions came from the textbook. Fair quizzes and tests, great curve. Hard class but he's straight forward about what you should do for it
May be a bit intimidating to people bc he lectures straight through the period, but he welcomes questions, he does review for exams and weekly quizzes, and he has a great curve. He's available for office hours often. Study his lectures and DO THE HOMEWORK, it will really help since his quizzes and exams are mostly math-based.
He lectures as if he was in a video, but is nice. Quizzes every week (easy). 3 exams and final counts as 2 (hard). Each question is usually 10 pts and if you don't get the right answer, half of the pts off. I did the honors option and was pretty easy. Lots of HW, but aren't graded. The lowest grade of each category drops. AWESOME curve.
Strothkamp's teaching style did not sit well with me, unfortunately, so my review is not completely objective in nature. Approximately two hours of studying are recommended to accompany each lecture, and unfortunately if you don't have that time to dedicate to learning the material, it's a slippery slope of a course.
Strothkamp is a relatively well professor. But the fact that in fall semester of 2018 it became a huge mess. Strothkamp in the middle of the semester had medical issues and left. There were two other professors rotating with different teaching styles from strothkamp. For Precaution do not take him for the spring semester, don't risk he may leave
Really sweet professor. Lectures the whole time. HW is not collected and attendance is not taken so he doesn't know who you are. Quizzes are easy but tests are a little tricky. You need to go to class to pass the tests come mainly out of the notes but there are some curveballs. 7 quizzes and worst 2 are dropped. Nice curve. Not the BEST at teaching
He is one of the best lab professors. Make sure to do the PQs and study well for the quizzes. He is slightly a tough grader, but still, he grades better than other lab professors. If you're doing all the assignments and studying for the quizzes, it is a guaranteed A.
I had him for CHEM3B and was very glad to have him again for 4B. He explains the experiments really well, so be sure to pay attention. He tells you exactly what to do for post-lab as well. He grades pretty leniently compared to others. He does speak softly, so you might want to be at the front while he explains things. He's just a great guy.
Unfortunately his teaching style didn't fit well with how I best learn material. He doesn't give homework except for supplemental questions you can do on your own time. He also lectures straight through the period and doesn't really slow down to allow students to catch up with notes. Lots of quizzes which are pretty okay but the exams can be tough
Sweet and very knowledgeable, however he professes his knowledge rather than teaches it. The only way to pass this class is to write and copy down everything he says, go to chem tutoring, and STUDY. Has lenient grading and curves so if u put in the effort u will be fine. He does go topic wise so that is helpful. Covid messed up chem for us smh
Hes a good professor and doesn't use Alecs. He can be confusing and wander off topic because he's so passionate. he has weekly quizzes which he makes CLEAR on the material and it forces you to learn. GO TO TUTORING!! make sure you write down the examples he does in class because those are most similar to exams and quizzes.
You need to understand how to study with him. More or less, his tests are based on what he does in class and the supplements. If you understand the basic concept you will be find. Tutoring is very helpful. He is one of the easier and better teachers as long as you study. He is very knowledgeable and passionate. Very fair grading
I found him to be a pretty good professor. He gives out supplements and textbook practice that helps you understand the content and theres a youtube channel called The Glaser Tutoring Company that goes through all the problems. His curve is super generous and theres no ALEKS. Be sure to track your grade since he doesn't post them online.
Ronald was a good teacher he helped you understand everything you need, if your good with algebra you can pick up quick but as long as you do practice questions that he gives you from textbook and supplementals then you'll be fine.
Laid back lab prof. If you ask for help he will literally do the work for you. Very sweet man. Biweekly quizzes are based on lecture, but they do not weigh a lot. He does everything he can to simplify the labs and help as much as possible. Always lets you out early. He just does not post grades online so its hard to calculate how you're doing :/
Professor Strothkamp is so patient and helpful during lab. He's knows literally everything there is to know about chemistry it's insane. His grading criteria is very unclear and he doesn't provide any feedback on assignments, however. If you ask for help he'll clearly explain it to you. I definitely recommend him!
Professor Strothkamp is extremely knowledgeable but he was an okay teacher. He doesn't use powerpoint presentations rather he writes on the whiteboard using the textbook. He teaches you the basics but you need to do A LOT of practice questions and self-teaching. He doesn't assignment homework but does give optional questions from the textbook.
Prof. Strothkamp is a great man and is very knowledgeable. However, he has no slides or notes. He does not teach you the basics so you must learn it all yourself. He assigns no homework but there are questions in the textbook. Also, students who sit in the back are on their phones during exams and he does not even look at them.
Super chill professor and very generous with grading!
He is a fantastic professor, and he grades everything on a curve. He is a very generous grader and tries to give you points for everything possible!
Majority of his tests had questions that were not talked about before the test. He graded one of my tests wrong and after I corrected him he said "oh thats too bad." Take a different teacher, your GPA will thank you.
Prof. Strothkamp is very knowledgeable in chemistry, but isn't the best teacher. He doesn't explain concepts, and mainly solves problems the entire lecture. I found myself having to read the textbook to learn the material myself. There is a quiz or exam every week, which were fair. If you study, you can get a good grade in the class.
Strothkamp, for the most part, is a reasonable grader. If you ask him about anything you got wrong, he explains it. He also explains/gives major hints about all lab procedures. The practical with him was very laid back, and he allowed you to practice for it in the weeks leading up to it. Overall, if you put in the effort you should be just fine.
Retook for an A but was lowkey hard. Yes I didn't dedicate much time, but without my previous stuff I don't think I would have done as well. He does review what topics are tested on, but exam questions look nothing like the problems done in class which is the worst part. Don't recommend unless u can get old exams and listen to EVERY word
His lectures are hard to understand. He doesn't explain concepts and mostly solves problems during the entire lecture. You may be better off skipping the lectures and reading the online textbook or watching youtube videos to study instead. He gives quizzes every week and is a fair grader, the worst 2 are dropped. He will go over any questions.
Prof. Strothkamp is a knowledgeable but tricky teacher. Lectures can be dry, but the textbook and supplemental materials are key. Studying practice problems and using resources like Unstuck AI really help. Overall, a fair course if you put in the work.
such a chill guy, had him for lab. pretty much explains the entire lab to you and gives you the answers. very sweet, will come up to you mid experiment and observe but its really chill. write down calculations that he goes over at the beginning of lab bc you will need them for after! not too strict about lab policies, doesnt make you wear gloves??
Great professor, but very lecture-heavy with no slides. You need to take good notes and study outside of class. Weekly quizzes, but he drops the lowest 2 along with your lowest exam. Tough but fair—if you stay on top of the textbook and practice problems, you'll be fine. if your confused he will reexplain, hes super sweet!
Honestly, he was fair. He doesnt post slides or lectures. His lectures are just practice problems basically. No homework. 7 quizzes (not bad at all, will go over similar questions before) and 2 get dropped. One test gets dropped if its harming your average. If you ask him questions, he will explain it well. His tests are fairf as well.
Strothkamp doesn't really teach well, I found myself spending a lot of time watching videos online to figure out. he doesn't ask you questions you have to ask him questions otherwise he just moves on. He does tell you what's on the quizzes and exams, and he does have a review session right before each quiz which does help a lot when taking the quiz
I had him for chem lab and he was so chill. His grading wasn't harsh and he made our lives easier by removing unnecessary workload. But, he is not a tech savvy person so don't expect an email back if you reach out to him. Everything is graded on paper and you won't know your grade until the semester is over. Overall, I loved him for lab.
He doesn't have slides or notes but the stuff he put on the board was honestly most useful to me. I appreciated that he went straight to the point rather than giving the unnecessary background. I like his teaching style but you definitely have to study a lot outside of class to do well. If you read before class and pay attention you should do well.
Dr. Strothkamp is a much older guy so he isn't very tech savvy. His lectures are all based on the textbook and he doesn't fully share the details which makes it harder to understand. His class is only graded by 3 tests and the final as well as quizzes so you have to do really well.
Dr. Strothkamp is an OK professor. Your are graded based off of three exams and the final, as well as 7 quizzes. His class was challenging and hard to follow during lectures due to his pace. This class will require a lot of outside studying so be prepared. You grade is dependent on the exam grade. Make sure to do the honors options.
Very knowledgeable but can't break concepts down. Weekly quizzes were a pain but gave me an idea of how well I was doing. The exams are difficult but doable, however I heavily disliked his mindset of if every student does well then he didn't make the exam hard enough. Yet, he would curve grades. Notes aren't always clear or relevant to quiz/exam.
I aced this class and I can confidently say this is the worst class I've ever taken. I wish I got into a car accident on my way to this class more than once. This is the WORST possibly option for a chemistry teacher Hofstra has to offer. Heed my words, you have been warned.
he's the absolute sweetest! curves A LOT and has review sessions before the final. just go to class because he doesn't use slides and if you don't do the textbook problems of show up to class, you're lowkey screwed. other than that he was a very good professor!
Goes through topics EXTREMELY fast, and DOES NOT, ask the students questions. He does not break down concepts, make analogies, or ask things like "are we understanding this" he reads DIRECTLY from the textbook. Nice, grade & rubric is straight forward. But absoloutley bad at teaching. Hence 40+ being a D. Study outside of class, you should be OK.
