I was iffy about this class since it's 150 people and she had no ratings. Safe to say she's an amazing professor. Her lectures are extremely animated and you WILL learn. She requires you complete 2 lab hours a week but that's seriously the way you'll ace the class. Even with 150 students she sends individualized emails seeing if you need help.
LOVE HER. Amazing teacher! You can tell shes passionate about her work. She's there for the students when you need her. Participation is important. Attendance isn't mandatory but you'll want to show up to class. Her lectures are interesting and makes everything so easy to understand. Genuinely cares for her students. Take her!!!!
Amazing professor. The course is clear and straightforward. She is very accommodating to her students and is very kind. I highly recommend taking her. Sh
One of the best math teachers I have ever had! I retook this course after I was forced to drop it last semester because the teacher did not explain things well. Prof. Merkin is nothing but clear and really nice too! She emails you personally when you do exceptionally well on a test. Take her!
Best math professor I have ever had! She is so helpful and is an amazing teacher. You can never get lost in one of her lessons, she will provide videos and a clear lesson to make it easy enough for you to learn. She is the only professor that requires math lab hours, but it helps a ton. TAKE TAKE TAKE
She's very clear in her lectures. You should go to class because that's how you know what's going on and clear doubts. There are two hours of math lab per week which helps you practice the material. There are 4 tests and a final. You don't need the book but you do need to get an access code.
I would definitely take her class again. She is a great professor, and she always helped me when I needed help. My final exam is on Friday, but I know I will pass because of her very detailed videos. The videos HELP OUT A LOT! I would definitely take her again and recommend her to anyone.
A down to earth professor. She cares about the students understanding the material. If you don't understand the material, don't hesitate to ask! She doesn't bite. A lot of online homework with mylabsplus and having to be in the lab 3 hours a week. The tests are fair. If you put in the work, you will get an A. Pretty professor with a easy class.
She is super nice and if you ever need help with anything you can always ask. Learning wise, she taught the subject as well as I could as for :)
She very nice always answer back your emails but the class is tough , I spend hours at night and During weekends studying but is too much to learn. The modules are very long and is something new in every homework , I will drop this class because it's overwhelming . According to the syllabus 45%test and 25%final test . You must do good to pass
Homework is done online, labs hours are a must at least 2 for once a week for a tiny boost to the grade. Helps in class and attendance is a must. The preclass worksheets were very confusing but counted to the grade as long as they were completed. Makes you work very hard for the grade. Would take again. Knows what she is teaching &helps you a lot.
Merkin is a great proffesor, i recommend her. She goes through the subject matter with multiple examples. 2 Lab hours a week, but its the only way you will pass, honestly. Do all the homeworks till 100 and take all the quizes. Its not a hard class to pass but you do need to put in time and effort. You dont need a physical book, just the code.
Professor Merkin is by far my favorite math teacher. She was always willing to help and made every topic understandable. only 4 tests and she always had a i clicker quiz every class. only go to class 2 days out of the week, sometimes 3.
Professor Merkin is very understanding and she really cares about her students and makes sure that assignments are turned in accordingly. I highly recommend that you participate in blog as it will give you extra points. Guided Note are important as it will give you a better understand what the sections are about. Be sure to ask for help if you need
Great professor. Always there to help, especially in the math lab. It's 3 hours of math lab, which is annoying, but really helpful when you need extra help on the homework. She goes through the material really well. Don't hesitate to ask questions in class. There are iclicker quizzes in every class. Definitely one of the best math professors.
Professor Merkin is the best math teacher I've ever had. She responds quickly to emails and offers extra support if you're struggling. The course content is challenging, but the weekly homework assignments keep the information fresh so you don't forget anything. Tests are tough but similar to the homework. Study and you'll succeed!
Professor Merkin is great. Though the content is a bit tricky if you are unfamiliar with mathematical concepts, she is more than willing to help. Her test reviews, homework assignments and quizzes all correlate with her exams (some questions are even the same). I recommend taking her for finite.
DO NOT take this course online. She gives so much weekly homework that is pretty pointless except for the mylabs stuff. Tests are only 8-10 questions so prepare for failure if you put the comma in the wrong place. Confusing on what she expects and if you ask for help she will direct you to a tutor. Avoid.
Super hard class. Gives a lot of unnecessary workload except for the homework on mylabsplus. Tests are worth a lot. Even if you get 100 on all the homework, your grade won't change if you got a low score on the test. I would not recommend this class.
Professor Merkin is excellent, her lectures are clear and very easy to follow. Tests are exactly what is taught in class. Mandatory attendance.
AMAZING!!! The best math teacher I have ever had. She is very clear and she is always there to help. If you do the homework and the quizzes, you will get an A in the class. I would take her again because she was really great!
Professor Merkin is an excellent teacher! Math has always been one of the most difficult subjects for me, but I found that with her it was all very simple. If you need to take Finite Math take it with Professor Merkin! Weekly homework and quizzes, but they're so passable!
Professor Merkin is great. She really goes out of her way to help her students and ensure you pass. This class wasn't too hard but it wasn't super easy either. It's definitely do-able you just have to put the work in. She is a great professor!
If you're taking Finite, take it with Merkin. 100% recommend. She is the best professor because she teaches the material and is always at her office to help her students. Do the homework & quizzes to study for the tests, which are the same thing (with different numbers)! Ended class with 102. Great professor! Would take again!
A lot of work but she's great at explaining math so you will breeze by it. The tests are worth a lot so take them seriously. You don't need the book just the access code.
She is a great professor. However this class has a lot of work each week. 2 part homework, weekly quiz, paragraph reflection and 4 projects. It's a class that needs a lot of time dedicated to it. Exams are done in the math lab you also have to attend the lab 2 hours a week.
Amazing Professor! I have not taken a math class in nearly a decade and had 6 other classes as well as this one. There might be a lot of homework but it is really doable. Just study when it comes to the exams and you will be fine. Professor Merkin is honestly a gem!
She's extremely passionate about the subject and always willing to help students. The subject is easy to understand but it helps to ask the LAs in the class & lab for clarification. Lots of homework& quizzes. Study hard for the exams because they really make or break your grade. Overall, Merkin is an excellent professor and MGF1106 is an easy class
After my fall semester i had thought math at FIU would always be a struggle. If you dedicate yourself to the class and do everything you'll be fine. Just make sure you review before the exams because like most math classes that'll make or break you. Merkin was extremely accessible for an online professor and was insanely fast when grading.
Terrible teacher, I was struggling and went to her office for advice and she flat out lied to me about my grades and progress. Terrible teacher and she doesn't deserve to have her job here.
I despise this class. Get a tutor. So much unnecessary work, quizzes, discussion boards, group projects, weekly homework, proctored tests, guided notes assignments
I will admit, this class has loads of work but it serves its purpose. I am doing very well in the class because I organize myself with deadlines. Do all the homework and quizzes and you'll do good on the tests. Do the guided notes at least 4 days before the due date and you'll be fine. This class isn't for procrastinators or lazy people! DISCIPLINE
If you have any difficulties with homework, just email her and she'll get right back to you. She really cares about you knowing the topics discussed in class; and prepare to do most of the work online.
It's a hybrid class, so you have to do most of the learning and work online by yourself. If you put your energy and commit yourself in completing the quizzes, homework, and studying for the test, then you'll have an easy time in the class. Overall, I got a 97.69% as my final grade, so definitely commit yourself into doing the work.
The class is 75% you doing it yourself online since its hybrid, so dont be a slacker.
Class is only one say but you have so many assignments due at different times of the week. She's a really good teacher that explains everything very well though!
She explains everything very well and wants everyone to pass. The class worksheets are very helpful. The tests are easier than the homework and quizzes (and they are not hard at all.) This class is very easy. As long as you do the work you'll end with an A.
She was a great teacher. She really cared about the class and her students. The 2 hours of Math lab every week is annoying, but she is usually in the lab if you have questions. The pre-class assignments are an way to get points as well as attendance. MLP hw helps prepare you for the test. If you do your work and show up you'll pass with an A.
She gives a good amount of homework but it really helps, especially the reviews for the test. She emails back quickly and will try to help you the best she can. You do have group projects which are easy but make sure you keep in contact with your groups members.
Prof. Merkin was honestly SUCH a great professor. Her assignments are all posted from the beginning of the semester, they are organized and easy to find. You know exactly where your grades come from, how they are weighed, and what your grade is made of. The assignments are pretty easy, and there is two required math lab hours per week.
I took her for Finite Math. She is a great professor, she teaches really well. From everything else I heard, it seemed like she was the only teacher who really knew how to teach the content. You don't need the book as long as you understand the homework and her lessons. She can be a bit rude sometimes since she takes teaching seriously.
DO NOT TAKE HER SHE DOES NOT TEACH you only do groupwork and she expects you to know everything already
Prof. Merkin i would say is a good person but not a great MAC1147 professor. Keep in mind she is Jewish therefore she will miss a lot of classes due to the holidays off. When we had a test she wouldn't be able to respond to any emails or come to class for days. Most of the learning is done in group work in class & outside of class is all online.
Prof. Merkin requires a lot of previous knowledge. She really does not help you when you have any questions. Started the course with a little over 50 students with students standing up on the first day of class to more than half of the class now dropped. i suggest DO NOT TAKE PROF. MERKIN FOR MAC1147.
Prof. Merkin is not the best person, but she is a pretty good teacher. She is a bit sassy and will be rude if you get even just a little bit on her bad side. The class is easy if you find statistics easy. She only lectures for about 5-10 minutes and then it's group activities for the rest of the class. Learning assistants & the Math Lab help A LOT!
I took this as a hybrid course so there was a lot of homework as well and a weekly quiz which were harder than the actual tests. She doesnt lecture and makes you work in groups instead. She didnt teach anything I taught myself the entire class. The LAs were great.
I took her for Finite Math and she was a good professor. I had many opportunities to meet her outside of class and she was very helpful with answering any questions I had.
I really didn't like this class. It seems pretty easy at first, but gets difficult as the semester progresses. I'm an A student and got a B. The practice tests wouldn't really prepare me for the tests. The work load is pretty manageable: guided notes due every week and a homework assignment due every Sunday. 4 tests total and a final.
Professor Merkin's a good and nice professor, but her teaching style is different (more group work, less lecture). She and some other professors don't use MyLabsPlus, instead they use Pathways/COSma. The tests are challenging, you just have to put in a lot of effort! Make sure to read the textbook (really helps for tests) and get help from the LAs!
I had an amazing time with Professor Merkin in Finite Math. I don't like math at all and I actually enjoyed myself. To do well in her class, you have to do all the assignments especially the pre class assignments. Make sure you go to class and complete the required hours in the lab. Easy A if you always go to class and do the assignments.
this class have a lot of content and test and video reflections. Not an easy A, B or C. But it is doable, you just have to put in the work. This is my 3rd attempt at this class and she is the only professor that encouraged me to NOT drop this class. and I finally PASSED
This class was a UCC. She is a good professor that really works with students. There are 4 main tests including the final. About three assignments due each week, which can be anywhere from 10-25 questions each. There are mandatory graded test reviews the week before a test. You need to work for this class, it is not an easy A, maybe an easy B.
I do not recommend taking her for MAC1147. This class requires a lot of previous knowledge and all of the work is word problem based. She does not explain anything in class and just sends people to work in their groups. The grading scale for the exams makes it very difficult . I wouldn't recommend her if you struggle with math .
I do not recommend taking her. She does not teach at all and has you go into groups, that is usually a good thing but when no one knows how to solve the problems it makes it hard to understand. Assessment are graded individually and very confusing criteria. If you are person who needs a lecture in order to learn then Merkin is not for you.
There is 33 learning goals/questions and must pass 23 or more to have a C in that criteria. Final is 20 questions 10 multiple and 10 written, Must get a D or above to pass the class and keep the grade depending on how many goals you pass (final is pretty much an exit exam, doesn't count to your class grade). Must study to pass the learning goals.
Professor Merkin is extremely nice and open to all her students when needed. Her teaching style is different every class you will work in groups basically teaching yourself. If you are not good in math and havent been in school for a while I wouldnt recommend. If you have a strong foundation in math this class will be fairly easy to you.
Everything is group work. Merkin will oftentimes jump in while you're doing your work to explain something she really should've taught beforehand. There really isn't anything to you can do but to figure it out yourself. If you struggle with math, do not take her. She also uses a RationalReasoning workbook, though it explains next to nothing.
Don't take the class if you'r expecting to actually learn. The class is 1:40 mins long, 30 mins worth of teaching and the rest GROUP WORK, meaning you will sit with other people and are expected to learn from them. The test are point based as in 6 questions per test pass 3 the other 3 you get to retake in two weeks. Each one is a point 23 min C
DR. Merkin's style for online teaching is pretty much hands-off. The way she has the class set up is that you do Guide Notes, Video Reflections, Homeworks, and Review Quizzes, and Projects. She groups each of them as 10%. The test is 10% each and the final exam is 20%. The final test and exam are taken via Test Centers, Mathlab or ProctorU.
Very nice and explains things well. Very accessible outside of class as well. However, she is a firm believer in active learning, and working out problems in a workbook with a group constitutes the majority of the course.
Professor Merkin is simply amazing. I took her for both social and finite and she was always there to assist if there was a problem. I had several occasions of which I was not able to take an exam on time and she always made sure I was able to take the exam, once there was a good reason of course.
Professor Merkin is caring, knows her stuff, and it's always willing to help her students. She answers emails super fast. She leaves really good feedback on every homework. There's enough hw, but if you submit before the due date, she will leave feedback which allows you to fix any mistakes and resubmit. I didn't think the class was hard, tbh.
I'm sure the material itself its easy, its just hard to understand because there's really no instruction whatsoever. The course its full of homework, and heavy projects that take a lot of your time. I am not a lazy student at all, but this class was very dreadful and annoying overall. Also the test reviews on zoom, weren't helpful at all.
youre expected to already know a lot of the subject before you attend class. once in class you have to work on worksheets with your group for an hour and have very little time to as questions after class
If math is your weakest subject please consider another professor. Merkin expects every student to have a great math background considering that every student has/had a phenomenal understanding of math basics that were nearly taught in middle school. The course contains a lot of material which is understandable. However, you must dedicate time.
She is by far the worst teacher i have ever had. The only reason i passed is because of the people in math lab and teaching myself. She doesnt teach, she has no idea what were doing in class and when she grades homework she leaves useless comments instead of explaining. I had to argue with her over something i got right that she marked wrong.
Professor wasn't horrible but I regret not taking algebra instead, this was worse...
Professor Merkin was the first good math teacher I have had in a while. The course is hard, but it is worth four credits. She really wants you to succeed and you just have to ask. There is work for the class and attendance really makes the difference. It isn't mandatory, but it is worth it.
Genuinely a great professor, love her teaching style, she makes concepts easy to understand. I've never really been great at math but I'm doing fairly well in her class and I am actually learning. You will have to work in groups, which personally works for me because your classmate might know what you don't. Would definitely recommend for MAC1147.
She's genuinely a super nice person, but her teaching style is frustrating, to say the least. She does not really "teach" in the traditional sense, but instead just puts you in groups for ALL of class and expects you to learn from each other and the LAs. I can count on my hand how many times she actually wrote on the board and explained something.
Professor Merkin is the best! She taught precal better than my high school teacher ever did. She helps you to understand the material to your best. You get "learning goals" instead of test, & you can retake them to get an A. There is also a lot of groupwork and most of the time is working in groups to solve classwork. But the mathlab sucks sometime
Required UCC taken summer 2023. Most applicable math class EVER. Large amount of assignments (MML, Guided Notes, Group Check-Ins, and Conceptual homework) and proctored exams BUT keep submitting for the higher grade w/assignments! She's nice and tries to help when she can - she gave multiple Extra Credit opportunities. She wants you to succeed!
Merkin is nice and tries to help you, There is a lot of homework, but they are manageable. You basically teach yourself, she doesn't lecture a lot and puts you in groups in all classes and you guys teach each other, she and the LAs help. The work is not hard but if you are not good at math you might want to look for a professor who lectures more.
Gives you second chances to resubmit corrected work if you got something wrong (which she clearly points out). Encouraging feedback otherwise. Her LAs were good! Be hopeful that you're placed in a group with members that actually participate because she'll count it against you if they don't. Overall very friendly and would take again.
I think she's a nice professor, she just doesn't actually lecture. She puts you in groups, and you're expected to learn from one another. most of the work in this class is considered "common knowledge," but I don't have a strong background in math like the others in my group (thanks to them I passed)
The course is designed to be self taught with little to no help from anyone just LAs and sometimes the teacher. There is a mandatory 1.5 hour lab time each week where you do both online hw and paper hw in the library. When you ask for LA help, they rarely even know what you need help with. It's easy when you know math.and whole class is group work.
MGF1130 is a newer class offered so the department is working out kinks, the days you were in class was mainly group work with the LAs / Professor helping you out with any questions. You mainly self teach with pre-class assignments that aren't difficult. Professor Merkin has a very kind and bubbly personality so I recommend taking her class!
leaves great feedback on assignments. allows you to re-do assignments as long as its before the deadline. perfect math class to take online. as someone who genuinely just does not understand or do well in math, i found this class very easy and well structured as long as you make sure you understand the content and do the work. 10/10 recommend
The professor's teaching is confusing and unhelpful almost all the time, and the tests (given every 2 weeks) are hard and 40% of the time don't align with lessons talked about in class. Grading is unbalanced, with 80% based on tests and 20% on other assignments. Do yourself a favor and avoid this professor.
3 weekly assigments. She puts you into groups and you have a hroup project for the end of the year. Not the best teacher but the TA made it better.
She is an Okay professor. Keep in mind she doesn't teach you are all on your own to teach yourself using the book and powerpoint. 3 assignments every week and like an exam every 4 weeks
DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS! She has no compassion or empathy for anyone other than herself.
This class and professor stressed me out to no end. She's very difficult and a tough grader. She even grades your notes. She isn't compassionate by any means. She doesn't teach, just tells you to read the book and PowerPoints. A lot of exams, and they're hard. If you can avoid her, do it.
She doesn't teach. Content not hard but she makes it hard, attendance mandatory, but assignments done in class are not, which makes it hard to go to class. 3 checkpoint tests on your own time according to the available slots in the lab can't be made up, 1h 30 mins of lab every week plus class. If you take her please do so online.
