One of the worst teachers I have ever had. He gave me two grades lower than I deserved, and it took three months to get him to respond to e-mails and phone calls. After a long argument, and producing proof, he finally changed the grade. Beware!
he is very diff. and it looks like his objective is to flunk you from day one.
What an uptight butt head; political science should be one of the main topics in our schools it's teachers like this that make the foundation of our own nation foreign. We have a responsibility in a democratic society too under stand government and its wo
Yeah i agree with the other person. His response mails 2 me were kinda arrogant and "im never wrong".didnt cut me much slack but thier r far worse teachers at cabrillo! The course was pretty cool. 100 ? test though kidda draining!
Bad duh duh duh your a bad teacher duh lighten your ego trip this is for the class not your own ege buddy. skip this guy even if it's the only online class you can get.
He doesn’t care this is his little ego trip shame too, great topic loved the material this guy isn’t one of the rally bad ones here just a dud, oh well….
Wow is this guy a jerk or what? If only this site had been available a year ago I could have avoided this guy. Worst (and one of the very few bad) instuctor at Cabrillo. AVOID!!!
I think people rate him low because they dont like his politics. He tries very hard to present both sides- which is GREAT. If you read and do the essays you'll do fine. stop whining. He has a good sense of humor too! He knows everything about politics.
The online course has had MANY technical dificultys that are not the instructers fault. I dont think he's that bad, although his politics seem to be a little far to the right and that may affect grades on controversial papers. He returns all e-mails fast
O'Brien is a young, bright guy who is still coming into his own as a teacher. He's really not as bad as everyone says- he grows on you. His style pushes you to use your noggin- so only take the class if you're up to a challenge and really want to learn.
Very hard to get questions answered. Doesn't like to be straight forward. Easy tests because of the study guide and book.
I TOOK THE ONLINE COURSE, AND I THOUGHT THAT IT WAS OK, EXCEPT FOR THE TECHNICAL DIFFICULTIES. THE TESTS WERE GOOD BECAUSE YOU HAD YOUR BOOK RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOU AND HE TOKK ALL OF THE Q'S RIGHT OUT OF IT AND HE GAVE YOU A GOOD STUDY GUIDE.
AVOID IF POSIBLE! I did not like this man at all. Most people don't. I truely believe the only positive comment here was written by him, no one would say that about him. He has a huge EGO, and NEVER accidentally call him Mr. O'Brien, it's DR. O'Brien.
I understand why other students say that O'Brien has an ego problem, but he's preparation for what you will get when transfering. He's a PHD, do I need to say more? Communication could be much better, and grades highly on critcal thought over factual information. You'll learn; I've had worse.
O'Brien is not easy, hes not gonna put up with BS and he likes to hear his own ideas regurgitated. That said I liked his class, he tries to be not too partisan and teach people to respect the process and learn actual theory. He articulate his assignments are intresting and hes tough but fair.
I'm glad I took this online. At orientation I could tell this was going to be a long semester. He's demanding and sarcastic, but at least I didn't have to deal with him face to face.
He was a pretty good guy and I enjoyed the class and learning about the history of American Political thought. I liked him and would take another one of his courses.
I thought that O'Brian's class was VERY easy, and his responses to my questions were always very prompt and articulate.
he is a smug, opinionated egotist who is only interested in his own opinion. AVOID HIM.
I felt he graded and commented on my work fairly. I wasn't able to get a feel for his political beliefs. So in regard to his "bias" or "strong opinions", they wern't coming across that strong to me.
Extremely cocky when you ask him a question. Makes you feel stupid for even asking. Is very unclear with expectations. And very restrictive when it comes for exam papers. If my major was not Political Science, I would not go on with this teacher.
great teacher, though tuff
didnt have to interact w/ him, so not bad. papers are easy, graded fairly (dont have to be the best writer) but watch out for page numbers and little details, he cares. study guides are vague to test material. tests are specific, but you have the book in front of you and note from the study guide, just be prepared.
Rory is a little man who is in love with his own titles. He actually signs his emails with Faculty Senate President, as if anyone cares. Like many graduates from USC he is both insecure and arrogant. His grades are subjective, he thinks he's also teaching English, and overall he's a sarcastic little tool. Avoid him if possible.
Online. Very hard, need to study, 2 midterms, a final, 5 essays. Tough grader. However, your expectations are clear. If you can do the work, you can pass the class.
Very arrogant. I feel stupid when I ask questions. Not helpful. Wouldn't help me get a tutor. Gave me a C after I spent 20-30 hrs. writing a paper. This guy is horrible. Avoid him at all expence. by the way - - - I had the dean on my side, helping me get a tutor, and OBrien STILL didn't help me get one. It's like, "he wants you to fail".
I think you'll either love him or hate him. He's different from most Cabrillo profs, there's a feeling of hierarchy in his classroom. Which isn't necessarily bad, I'm not going there to find a new drinking buddy. People have mentioned that he was rude when asked questions, I think he just demands that people are as coherent and clear as possible.
All we had to do was write 5 Papers and take 2 midterms and a final. Because I read the book, I did well on the essays and on the exams(except one..in a hurry). The work isn't hard, he's a fair grader, meaning you get was you deserve. I had an 89.6% at the end of the semester and he bumped me up to an A! Very nice guy.
Was great, I really liked the class, was to the point, clear and consice.
he wants you to go to class and if you dont put in the time to show up when he is teaching he feels less obligated to help you. if you write the paper you will do fine. sit in the front of the class and and take another poly psy before taking the class. its not bad if you show up. i had no problem calling him Rory and dont do the class online
Egotistical little man. He plays favorites in the class, and is not interested in student success, just stroking his own ego. In homework, if you do not agree with his opinions, expect a poor grade. Better yet take the class with another more caring instructor.
what an little man this guy really is. he feels the need to make others feel less knowlegable than him to stroke hi own ego - geez, why am i taking this class exactly? has no empathy or consideration for students' needs, only his own inflated opinions. AVOID this guy - there are better instructors at cabrillo.
This was one of the most traumatic academic experiences I ever had. Since I transferred from Cabrillo a few years ago I've worked with some pretty prestigious academics, and yet I have never encountered anyone as self-important, cold, and malicious as O'Brien. It has nothing to do with having a PhD-- he's just literally a psychopath. Beware.
I took Dr. O'Brien's intro to Govt. class online. He was always quick to answer any questions I had and was very clear about what we needed to read and by when. He also gave us easy-peasy study guides to follow for each exam. I took this class online after a 6 year hiatus from school and managed to pull a B.
The man is ridiculous. Hes a marxist trekkie who purports "civic humanism" against liberty. He is against outside sources. He uses a friend's out of print textbook. Dont stand out. He didn't like me or my paper and to fight me and flunk me, but I took him to the department over it. Over all, avoid him if you can or don't have time for propaganda.
Mr. O'Brien as he likes to be called is a good teacher. This is not an easy class, but it's interesting and he teaches it well. If you don't understand something he will explain it multiple ways until you do. in this class you are graded on 6 papers only, so if you don't like to write don't take the class.
If you are not interested in politics but want a good grade, take this class ONLINE. No time wasted in lectures. Not hard class. Grades fairly on papers. Papers pretty easy. Multiple choice tests online. You have your book to use so tests fairly easy even if you didn't read the textbook. Online materials very clear. Well organized online class.
His online class is well organized and he is clear on what is expected. I received an A, so I'm happy.
He is a good teacher if you just go to class and do at least part of the reading. The tests are directly out of the book so its pretty basic. He will help you out a lot if you ask for it but he dont take no bull.
O'brien is not the greatest. He's helpful if you go out of your way to talk to him out of class. Do the work, keep up with the reading, not too hard.
Redundant, explains same concepts the same way over and over, but expects more. Doesn't allow outside resources, making comprehension and essay writing difficult if dont understand from the limited resources he provides. Expects you to agree with his babbling egotistical sometimes irrelevant lectures. waste of time. otherwise, nice guy. i guess.
Wonderful teacher. Not sure what these other people are talking about, but his directions are so clear, his essay topics are interesting and he is a very fair grader. It's not an easy class, but if you're a college student you should be prepared to do some work people! Great teacher, great class.
He requires FIVE 3-5 page essays throughout the semester. He is too evasive about the content required for your paper, until you receive it and it is filled with patronizing comments. He uses the textbook very little, with the exception of the TWO mideterms and Final Exam. Way too much homework for a 3 unit class.
Such a horrible teacher. He lecture very little on notes. Wanna pass read the book! He goes all over the place and mainly spends the time answering questions about nonsense stuff. One of the worst teachers I've had so far. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!
Disorganized lectures. Heavy reliance on book for all assessment. But he is fun and does help if you need it. Tests are easy, essays somewhat confusing. Class time is all lecture. Somewhat hard grader.
passionate about politics. makes the class great.
I took the honors section of this course, and it turned out to be a really interesting course! I had no interest in politics, but the professor made it interesting! He is sarcastic and funny, sharing stories. His lectures are all over the place, don't bother taking notes. READ THE BOOK...he tests solely on the book material.
rory is very well interested in this subject. he asks if there are any questions at the beginning of the class and tries his best to answer them. Your grade is based off of 6 papers. 3 being worth 60 pts and the other 3 being 100. As long as you do the readings and the papers you will be fine.
Rory is a good guy. He shows excellent interest in the subject and consistently offers help. His lectures can be a little boring but class is mandatory. Your grade is based on 6 papers and are based off the readings in the book. As long as you do the assigned reading you should be okay, but you need to do well on the papers as well.
Rory loves his subject and for someone like me who is really interested political Science, I found his class really informative. He's not an incredible teacher, but he's certainly worth taking.
I very much enjoyed his class. If you enjoy the subject he is a great teacher.
PoliSci is not my field of interest, but I definitely DO NOT RECOMMEND taking this class online. It's just you and the book for the online class, and the book is DRY. I'm guessing taking it in-class might be more interesting.
He's really LOUD. Sit in the back or you'll land a fat headache. He really knows his topic, however, and draws from a wide variety of history. Be sure to make lots of references to your readings to get an A on the papers. It's not a hard class, but you do have to put in your work. Overall okay, but in retrospect I'd have taken something else.
Rory is informed in today's Politics. His lectures begin with the day's political highlight and respectively into class material. Papers are 5-7 with final two papers 7-10. Materials given in class to read and prompt with questions to be answered in paper. If you answer question informatively from material given you should be fine. Ask for help! A+
Although my area of interest is not really in the realm of US politics, I took this course because I think a good basis of understanding of the political system is vital to being an informed citizen and voter, and that exactly what PS5 gives you. Also, Rory was accommodating to the needs of the class and was always happy to answer questions.
This class is straight forward and should not be hard to pass. But the teachers got major attitude and trouble staying on subject. Hope you don't get your paper graded when he is in a mood cause you will not get credit as you deserve. He is all those names other people are calling him on here. Criticism is not constructive, just be-belittling.
Grade is based off of 4 essays and 4 extremely easy quizzes If you are in class you are already prepared to do well on the essays and quizzes. He never stays on topic and he can be a bit boring, but definitely take if you want an easy A.
His lectures are way too disorganized. When he lectures, he spends the first hour of class talking about random stuff that has barely anything to do with the essays. The last 15 minutes of class is occupied by writing notes as fast as you can because he has to rush through his power point. Easy class, bad teacher.
This class was entertaining, and always a good time. Love Rory's sense of humor, and his openness to answering student questions. It was refreshing to have him as a professor because he is a very genuine, honest, no-BS type of person. Not only was this class fun, but the lectures are eye opening. If you like philosophy, would definitely recommend
I've never been a fan of politics and was not a fan of this class. O'Brien is very enthusiastic about his class and about the subject, but could never stay on topic. Most of the time we just talked about what is going on in politics today. I highly recommend reading your book thoroughly. He takes roll (most of the time) so you have to show up!
He got off topic quite a bit which was a little annoying. EssaysAll of your grade (Which may be good or bad depending on what you want)
I've noticed a lot of people seem to dislike him on rmp. Personally I found him to be super mellow and cool. The class is chill and as long as you don't mind doing essays it's not terrible. I feel like he is hard grader though.
he was funny and chill but he focuses on answering students questions rather than teaching us so it was little disappointment for me. he explains the material well and the way he does is easy to understand. there are essay questions for the exam but if you listen to what he focuses on class, youll get A
i love learning about the government and political science but I just dread this class! Hes funny and nice but he goes off topic too much. Tough grader. There is 3 essays and 3 exams. There is hardly anything posted online so these essays and exams are very important. If you do poorly it on either one it will affect your grade heavily.
Rory is very inconsistent with grading, and uses his own political ideas to influence his assignments and discriminates against those who disagree with him. This was not a hard class, but he barely does his job, making it hard to be successful. This is one if my favorite subjects, but I would never take any class with him ever again.
He was the worse teacher Ive hard at Cabrillo. He gave me back a paper one day that said this is the worst thing Ive ever read. the worst thing was I took my paper to get looked at by a different P.S teacher and they said my essay was fine. Do what ever you can not to take him. He is the worst teacher at Cabrillo!
His knowledge of history and politics is impressive. When he stays on topic, the lectures are interesting. We could have covered more material if he had stayed on topic during lectures, but often his asides were interesting. We had to write 6 papers for the class. Early on he spent too much time explaining expectations for the papers.
I don't know what all these negative reviews are about, Rory was a great teacher. I learned so much from his class and if you do your work it's actually an easy A. I did get a B in the class but only because I didn't try as hard as I should have. He is very understanding and a nice teacher and is there to help you out, he is a fair grader.
He's a genuinely good guy who cares about his students. Literally gave me an extension on every paper over the course of the semester. Good guy who is understanding and clear on expectations!
Great teacher!
If you're a nerd for this kind of stuff, you'll do well. Guaranteed. You're only graded based on 6 papers throughout the semester, however they get heftier with time. Do the readings way ahead of time. I waited until my papers were due in 3 days to read an entire chapter and it was the most stressful thing in my life. Prof is really cool though.
Provides minimal homework. Clear expectations, a few papers required that are long but not too difficult to write. Makes politics seem almost not insane. Patient and provides great feedback.
He gives you a lot of time to finish an assignment. The reading wasn't tough at all, and quizzes were based on reading which made them easy. It was a good semester to take political Science with Rory.
I honestly really enjoyed Rory's class and I'm no history buff. I like his style of teaching because he is very passionate and explains things in a understandable way. This class is lecture heavy and lots of reading. He is a tough grader but as long as you submit your 6 papers (No Exams, No HW) and show that you care a lil, you should be fine.
Rory is a great teacher, he really cares about his class. He made the class fun and I really appreciated his lectures made you think about events going on right now. He is very fair in his grading. Do the assignments and you will pass. Show up to class and participate you'll be fine. Read, the book it will help you with your papers!
Genuinely cares if you learn in class, extends deadlines if people are falling behind and gives weekly updates on class schedule and what is due.
Professor OBrien is fantastic. Hes very passionate about his subject matter. He really explains how American Government works and makes it relevant to current events. This class does require writing short papers, reading, and chapter quizzes. I attended all of the classes, did my work, and really enjoyed this class.
I enjoyed having Dr. Obrien as my professor! He made the lectures super fun for the class! He's one of those professors that are passionate about what they do. It is also one of the few classes I enjoyed learning in! Get ready to read, it's mostly what will help you with your writings in his class.
He's a great teacher who knows exactly what needs to be taught. He knows his material thoroughly and he'll answer any question. He definitely cares about his students and will do what he can to accommodate you if you're having issues or any other trouble. He's passionate about his subject and that really helps you get into what you're learning.
I only had good experiences with Professor O'Brien who set me on a path for success with a clear class outline. There was no homework outside quizzes, small projects, and 4 short essays that I had lots of time to complete. The quizzes are based straight off material in the textbook and all the information you need for the projects is easy to find.
Overall a decent professor; class is mainly based on reading the textbook with chapter quizzes, four short writes, and a few projects. Grades fairly but definitely wants to see some extra effort put in for a higher grade. Lots of time in between stuff due to get the readings in, also provides detailed feedback on projects and short writes.
BEST ONLINE TEACHER EVER. COMMUNICATION IS KEY! I had to email him for a small extension on his Essays and he gave me almost a week extension. Yes his class does require a lot of reading and slides but everything is straight forward.!! No final for this class only 3 projects 3 Essays and small quizzes.
Amazing professor! He truly cares about his student's success. He is passionate about politics and hopes to motivate his students to participate in our democracy. Course is outlined in syllabus. Typical writing assignments but not too long. Course follows the Barbour textbook.
Basically have you read an American government textbook cover to cover. 3 analytical textbook-related papers, 3 projects about your local government and political thoughts. Doesn't provide any lectures. Quizzes are a little tricky but are basically word for word from the textbook so just be familiar with that material.
10/10 would take again! Currently in the Fall Intro to Gov online, this is extremely clear, doable and manageable if you are working fulltime. 3 papers instead of midterms, 3 group projects (format of papers) and quizzes can be taken 2x---clear and 100% from the online free text He is awesome!!
Rory is great! He's extremely passionate about PS, and makes the subject very alive. He's extremely good with giving details about the life of the people in the 1700-1900, which makes you feel "part of it". He's kind and considerate when students have issues. There is a lot of reading. There were only 6 papers and no other time-wasting tasks to do
I love Rory! His lectures are amazing, and his knowledge is endless. He seems to know every detail from the last 400 years. I understand why some see him as a tough grader, but if you do the work, you can earn a B or even an A. He was very considerate when I had emergencies. Fascinating professor!
He isn't hard, but also never gives 100% on anything. His feedback for me was things like, "you could have put more effort" or "you could have been more detailed," but all the rubric questions he asked were answered, and the writing was long enough. When in doubt, just add more details. For being online, I thought his lectures were interesting.
Professor O'Brien was pretty chill overall. I wrote almost all of my papers and projects day it was due and consistently got B's and A's on them. He cares most about your content, he doesn't care about whole lot about grammar functions (Just make it flow a little) or citations, as long as you take a clear opinion and write a lot.
