We had to give 3 presentations with a partner and turn in 3 long reports. Tests included essay questions, and were not too difficult as long as homework was done. She's very serious, and businesslike. I didn't find her to be very approachable.
She was very smart, but all she did was lecture. Her tests were easier than I expected, but not easy.
3Presentations w/partner, tests were somewhat difficult. She's not very approachable or helpful. I wouldn't want to take a class with her again.

Dr. Bettencourt is extremely knowledgable and passionate about her subjects. Tests are not that hard and her summit projects are a great learning tool. Not very approachable. She's fun to listen to and watch while she lectures. Her intellect is extremely sexy!
I liked her. She lectured extensively and you have to take good notes, because her exams are almost exclusively taken from her lecture. She knows her material and rewards hard work. This is not an easy class.
Tests were very easy as long as you knew the material. Didn't grade them to hard. Fairly easy to talk to, but not the most affable professor I've had. Overall, I enjoyed her class and would certainly take another one if I ever have the chance.
The wording on her tests was not user friendly, and she was very unapproachable. On tests she would expect you to know what she had taught in class as well as what was in the book, and sometimes they completly contradicted each others, and questions would be worded such as "in the book it states."
Really knows Russian history. But, those lectures! Almost dozed off a few times. The three bluebook tests were half from lecture, half from book. Learned a lot.
she has exstensive knowledge of the subject, lectures were interesting. I also liked that she dind't try to push her own political beliefs on the class. tests are hard only if you dont study notes.she seemed serious and businesslike at first, but eventually warmed up to class. nice smile.
Dr. Bettencourt is knowledgeable, and interesting to listen to. The class was primarily lecture, which makes attendance very important. It is obvious that she is delighted to see students engaged and interested in their education.
Bettencourt's assignments were hefty but she was a fair grader and I learned a lot in her class.
Dr. Bettencourt knows her stuff. She's an articulate, objective lecturer. Exams are not easy, but they're very fair.
She's intellectual and obviously enjoys what she's teaching. The assignments weren't easy and be warned, she LOVES court cases and will test you on them. This is not a class for slackers. I enjoyed it!
Dr. Bettencourt expects a lot out of her students. I would not recommend her if you are a slacker. She likes to give writing assignments for the class and essays on the test. Her MC test are on the difficult side. So you have to pay attention to her lectures and read the book. Generally she will explain what she wants for the essays.
She's very engaged in the subject matter, and passionate about her work. The thing I like best is that she never tries to insert her own views, she presents the facts and allows you to make a decision for yourself.
Dr. Bettencourt is a very qualified instructor. Hours of dry notetaking at times, so bring your coffee. Tests are short essay questions. All info is provided, just study and do well. This is not an easy class, you have to work for your grade. She expects a lot, and you will learn a lot. Grading is fair, based on effort. I recommend her class.
I was bored to tears during lecture. When I initially signed up for this class I was excited, but that was sapped from my soul when this professor opened her mouth. She is as dull as a butter knife and adds nothing to the class that you couldn't read in a book.
Horrible horrible class!!! DOCTOR, and do not call her anything else, sucks ass!
I took this course last term and found it quite dull, the lectures were often just reiterations of the readings but i don't think it is fair to attack dr.bettencourt. she did seem interested in her topic and willing to help students but did not always have the answers to questions. she got the class involved which is more than some profs do. her
Very intelligent professor. Definitely interested in Russian History. Intense lectures, lots of hand cramps from note taking. Not an easy professor by any means, but one can do well if they put their back into it as it were. I thoroughly enjoyed her class.
Very clear and thorough. I learned a lot during the term. The class is difficult though, and requires a great deal of time and effort. But if you're interested in the subject, this class is worth it.

very intelligent . tarent instructor .she really knows her subject matter especially '' political science'' DR Battencourt always prepared for lecture ,very clear about what she expect from the student ,be sure to take good note in class. I learned a lot in her class ,please if you didn't pass her class is not her fault . she is great teacher
Awful, awful, awful. She gives NO IDEA what she plans on testing on! The tests are IMPOSSIBLY difficult. She lectures so fast she gets out of breath, nearly impossible to write fast enough to get it all down in notes. WAY too much info. to remember, and no idea what is important and what's not! No review before tests... Avaid at all cost!
Great online course. I have read the reivews for the on campus classes, my suggestion if you don't like note taking...take her course online, it's great. Although there is a definite scheduled reading plan one must follow, it is self paced and low stess -- but I remind those taking it...it is necessary to keep up with the read, videos and study
Online class has no feedback, so basically you have no idea how you are doing. Not much communication for her.
I bet she'd be good in class, but taking the class online is tough. That, and her communication level, even when you write her emails, is not so great.
Great Instructor. Is very clear, and her lectures are very interesting
Bettencourt is brilliant! You know it does not surprise me that a lot of people gave negative feedback though. There were about 10 really stupid people just in my class. These kids would come in without their projects, homework and most of the time they stood the serious students up when we had to meet in groups outside of class. Take it from me.A+
When she talks she really knows what shes talking about. she's gone to school longer than probubly anyone at pcc. This is a hard class. i was confused about what was needed in class. the tests are hard the final is hard the class is hard. good class if you want a chalange but not if you want an easy A.
This is a very hard teacher. I don't know how she is in the classroom, but she is not a teacher at all in the online setting. There is no communication from her and hardly any discussion on Blackboard. This is a class where you read the book, study and take tests. She needs to learn how to teach to online students. Horrible and Boring Class.
ONLINE. Not real communitive and her syllabus isn't crystal clear. Still, people who complained this semester didn't study at all and put no thought into their discussion board posts. She didn't assign a lot of work but you need to study the heck out of the textbook in order to pass the exams. Online students, use the web resources!
Holy hell what a difficult class. Worked my butt off for a B, but damn proud of it! She is very challenging and informative. People that complain are dumb and lazy. Come to class, take good notes! I got away with not reading the book- don't recommend it. Group projects are individually graded, flakes get an F on their own.
Online- complete waste of time. The only assignments are 2 short papers and 1 discussion post, and the rest of your grade depends entirely on the midterm and final. She's too lazy to type lecture notes so you have to rely on the textbook & video programs to learn the material. No communication from her whatsoever.
Great teacher, but a very hard class. The exams are super difficult, and they're worth most of your grade, so even though I got A's on all my papers and the final, I barely scraped out an A in the class because of a B on the midterm. But I learned so much about the office of the Presidency! She was clear on everything and made sure we understood.
Took this class distance and would NOT recommend this professor. If I had to guess I would say she was forced to offer her classes online and isn't happy about it. She refuses to utilize Blackboard for anything other than its most basic functions. She gives very little information and is NOT quick to respond to questions. Avoid online if possib
Love Politics. The WORST teacher I have ever had at PCC. Does not respond to emails when you reach out. I emailed her 4 times before she responded and she just had lame excuses. She belittles the class when they didn't know an item. Very VAGUE. I took Professor Miranda this term he is EXCELLENT. SAVE YOUR MONEY. DO NOT TAKE HER.
Horrible
Took this class online and found it very challenging. Without more disucssion and interaction, it's hard to put the concepts together. She's obviously very knowledgeable, but doesnt seem eager to each online. Exams are worth the majority of your grade and pretty darn tough! STUDY HARD!
Too much emphasis (points wise) on only 2 exams which require large amounts of mindless memorization if you expect to get a decent grade. Papers were easy assignments. She takes too long to grade papers, discussions, etc. so its hard to know if your work is adequate for the class or not until its too late. Plenty of reading.
Nice enough lady, but she can't keep names or dates straight - very difficult to learn from. Comparing notes with the textbook helped, as did writing outlines to prepare for possible essay questions on her exams.
Dropped her class before the end of the third week. Russian history should be, and is, fascinating until you put her in charge of it. Drones on and on without the vaguest sense of personal interest. She can't keep her names and dates straight either. And it's pronounced EEGOR, not I-GOR, and EEVAHN, not I-VAN.
It's clear this woman loves politics, but does not love teaching; I have yet to meet a professor as disinterested in teaching as her. To any of you who have this professor, I highly suggest memorizing every court case in the book and her lectures, because each and every one of them will be on her tests, which pretty much make or break your grade.
Online course with on campus midterm and final, which are closed book and no notes. Multiple choice and open ended questions - very challenging if you don't study hard! The companion website was really interesting. Tough grader and slow to communicate - if you are not highly motivated, this might not be the class for you.
Class is extremely hard and things that are barely mentioned by her or in the book are all over the test. Doesn't really help you prepare for tests either. Class was well beyond the entry level for an intro class. Lectures vague but extremely important to testing. Reading every supreme court case she mentions important.
Dr. Bettencourt is my on-line instructor. She didn't even introduce herself when we all showed up for our on-site exam. Who doesn't even introduce herself?
If you memorize a bunch of court cases as if this was a law class you will do fine. If not, you will be like everyone else and learn next to nothing about political science. If you like to wait for weeks for your grades, this is the class for you.
Just finished Dr.Bettencourts class and LOVED it. She made it clear that all her lectures will be on her test and really stressed that reading the text was crucial. If you take good notes and do the reading then you will be fine but you have to do the work. This isn't an easy A class so don't take it if you're not up for lots of study time.
Took it online winter/11.This teacher loves the subject and seems to dislike teaching. She does not respond to emails. She does not engage the class. She does not participate in discussions. She heads the SOC/HI/PS dept. so it's difficult to justify the fact that she isn't a good teacher. I barely got an A. Very HARD to earn. Do not recommend.
I took her online class. We more or less had to teach ourselves, but I didn't mind because I thought that the textbook and other material was accessible and helpful. I strongly recommend using the study guide on the textbook webpage that is linked on the class webpage. Many of the multiple-choice exam questions are similar to the study questions.
This woman does nothing to help you do well in this class. She's not at all flexible, will not work closely with you on anything, refuses to give you your exams back, and seems to kind of enjoy making this class as difficult as possible. I got an A in PS 201 and I have a 3.5 overall GPA. I've never had a prof so unwilling to help you succeed. AVOID
Maybe the most difficult course I have taken at PCC. I will say, she is an articulate, friendly, passionate, & very engaging speaker. Her lectures, article & HW assignments were never dull, but I sure felt I was at times while trying to understand the material. Taking great notes to study from is a must; you will need your notes to study for exams!
Rosa teaches serious politics and you should only consider taking class with her if you are going into politics or serious about learning what actual political science is. Sitting in a circle and talking about how bad George Bush was is not going to happen here. This teacher is intersted in preparing students for the next level.
Claims to "instill in my students a love of knowledge". I am intelligent and motivated, and I have never been as discouraged by a teacher in my life. I don't even care what grade I get out of the on-line class any more. She degrades constantly, picking your work apart and injecting her own views and opinions. Always critical, never positive.
HORRIBLE. Bettencourt does NOT respond to emails, she is NOT clear about what will be on tests/quizzes. She becomes visibly annoyed when asked questions. Some students received special treatment. Studied my ass off and still got a D on my quiz. This class is impossible and a waste of money.
AWFUL. Not helpful, terrible at giving instructions, rude and doesn't elaborate. Avoid taking a class from her at ALL costs.
she was okay. Only thing was her tone is a bit harsh online. there were a few times when i would get back work and instead of giving constructive criticism that is helpful in improving my work she just kinda says things bluntly. she could be a bit more enthusiastic and positive. sensitive people beware!
The only thing that keeps me awake in this class is counting the number of times she says the words UM or UH, (257 in a two hour lecture) it is mind-numbingly boring and a waste of time/money. AVOID
Lectures are what make up the 2 hour class and they are mind numbingly boring. Multiple choice test was manageable, but the written exam was near impossible, and the class as a whole did terrible. Is the type of teacher who throws her travels and PHD around and makes your questions sound dumb no matter what. DO NOT TAKE!
Worst teacher I've had. Rude, not helpful, very critical without guidance for improvement. Do not take her classes, even if she's the only option.
Rosa's class is interesting and does prepare you with a good political understanding. It is also an extremely difficult class and one must know the lecture and book information very well to get their desired grade. The teacher is fairly relaxed on grading though.
One quiz on the reading every week; 3 discussion posts throughout the term based on maybe 20-30 pages of reading. Farely easy class if you do some of the reading. I thought all the instructions and guidelines were pretty straight forward. Would take a class with this professor again!
Great instructor who knows her stuff.
She is OK professor. There was no homework, which is good. There are two essay midterms and multiple choice for final. She is very very stereotype and judgmental. I would like to take another political science class if my schedule allows. I don't recommend this class to anyone who want to get A.
One of my favorite professors but I can understand how she might not be for everyone. She lectures the entire time so be prepared to take good notes. It's a lot of information but you can read through the notes and anticipate the broad essay topics that you'll be asked to write about for exams. Pro-tip: study by creating outlines for those topics.
I learned so so much from Rosa. She is incredibly intelligent and a very good professor. That being said- don't take this class for an easy A- because it won't happen. She's a fair grader- but only if you do the work, pay attention to lectures, and read the text. She is super knowledgeable and passionate. amazing.
Rosa Bettencourt is blunt, unprofessional, and vague. I received feedback on my assignments such as: "good response" or "your proposal should be more reasonable." Furthermore, my final grade was inaccurate, so I had to report a grade miscalculation which has never happened to me before. I do not recommend this instructor.
I really liked Rosa. She was very passionate on the subject. She does spend the whole class lecturing, but she posts her powerpoints online, so I always printed them prior. The subject matter was very serious (history of the Holocaust), so you need to be ready for the heavy material. But it was an extremely interesting course. I highly recommend.
She allows the other obnoxious students to rule the lecture. It's extremely irritating and difficult to follow. She also expects you to already have a wealth of knowledge on the subjects prior to taking the class. If this is your first Poli Sci class, BEWARE.
2 exams, one midterm and final, both essays in class on what was discussed in lecture and book. Not very clear answers when asking questions about foreign affairs/policy. Can be political which is very annoying since her views aren't widely accepted. Come to class, birefly read chapters, you'll get an A
I took this HST 285 (the Holocaust) last Winter and I can't stress enough how important this class is. Since then I've taken 2 more history classes and the information I learned in this class put me ahead of everyone else. Diving deeply into this event gives a clear perspective on so many others. Highly recommend this class, especially with Rosa.
I hope to take more classes with Rosa. She loves teaching, and will go out of her way for students who genuinely want to learn. If you don't care, she'll try to help you, but ultimately she holds you accountable for your part of the learning equation. Show some integrity, and she'll be your champion.
Very disappointed by this professor. I took an online class and she was almost non-existant. I emailed her for help on multiple occasions because I was struggling with the class despite studying hard every week. She offered no help and ignored my last email when I asked for help before consequently withdrawing. Will not take another class with her.
I withdrew from this class for many reasons. The lectures were absolutely wretched. It seemed like I was taking high school US History and NOT a class on foreign policy. The textbook readings had NOTHING to do with what was taught in class. The assignments were unclear. She also doesn't like to hear opinions that differ from her own. Terrible.
Rose is an exceptionally educated professor who has a passion for teaching. She provides a clear grading scale and promptly notifies students if due dates change. Attendance is a must to fill in the gaps in the PowerPoint lectures. Rose's courses are not easy A's, but if you work hard and communicate with her she will help you succeed.
I Tried to contact this instructor several times without a responses throughout the term. I got feedback about assignments I posted, but when I emailed her directly I didn't receive a response back all term. So don't expect help outside her feedback column. You will get mass emails, but not personalized emails back.
Great professor with loads of experience. As long as you complete the Article Reviews on time and take good notes during the lecture, you'll do fine. Be prepared for essay exams for mid-term and final.
Biased towards views. I was downgraded on an opinion. All politics teachers shouldn't be biased. I don't think she reads political news for a political teacher. Unresponsive to emails. I asked for a midterm report and she immediately asked for me to finish a quiz. I finished within the hour and she hasn't got back to me for days.
This teacher is fine, but I would never take her again. First of all, you NEED the textbook or you wont pass. She does a lot of quizzes (like 7-10 a week) and her grammar is horrendous so chances are you probably will have a hard time learning from her personal outlines and powerpoints. She is very knowledgeable though!!
Dr Bettencourt is very qualified and knows her subjects. She is a fair grader and will give you what you earned. She did not give out a lot of homework but you will have to study on your own. She expects you to be an adult and know how to get things done. I really enjoyed her lectures and her opinions.
Don't take this teacher! She did the bare minimum, which is such a bummer because the subject material could have been so interesting. She truly teaches (if you can call it teaching) on autopilot. I've taken other online classes before, this was the worst. The only thing she did was prepare outlines of the work you already read. Take someone else.
Rosa fails to lay out all the little assignments between quizzes and discussions in her syllabus. She is a extremely nit-picky grader on her discussions. For somebody who could care less about politics I struggled, but I tried and she still dinged me on points. If you are looking to earn more than a C on discussions and quizes look elsewhere.
She talked about sensitive topics with no tact, and as a teacher does the bare minimal. The amount of information you need to memorize for exams is unrealistic. If the class as a whole does bad on a an essay or test, she tells everyone how disappointed she is, and only focuses on the negative. Tears you down more then she builds you up.
First semester of college and it's online. She actually hasn't taught me anything. Solely relies on the textbook to teach us everything. Grades heavy on the discussions but doesn't really specify much, essentially she'll want an 8+ paragraph essay every two weeks but fails to call it that.
Dr. Bettencourt is tough. She expects college level work with thoughtful ideas and an ability to demonstrate that you've learned the material. She is specific but provides clear expectations on her discussions and she grades accordingly. Online classes require a lot of reading, that's just the nature of the game. Grades will equal your efforts.
