She covers vast amounts of materials for each test, but if you go to class her lectures are the best I have been to! She makes history interesting ( by talking about sex, etc.) and she doesn't talk about all the boring stuff that you already know!

Dr. Barker is a lot of fun. Her lectures are always interesting and she doesn't tell you all the things you already know from high school. Her tests aren't too bad as long as you do your readings. She'll give extra credits and help you out always.
she's a good teacher. thou i would suggest if you really want to pass class, go to class evertime, make sure u read both books, and take really good notes, otherwise you'll be cramming to everything towards the end.

Very fair and unbiased. She gives the straight story and behind the scenes scope. Generates a lot of discussion.
Not much to look at, but fair.
summer his 163
Dr. Barker is a fun, unorthodox teacher, but expect to do collegiate level work! Tests are NOT scantron they are short answer. Read the textbooks, attend lectures (you'll like them) and you should pass.
She has a hard time staying on task when there are class interuptions like sneezing. When shouldnt be a problem. When taking the test make sure you read thoroughly b/c her lectures and the book are different.
Funny but has trouble staying on task. Sadly you must read all of the assigned material to get an A. But if you go to class and pay attention you can get a B.
a bit odd
Yikes! Get me out of here.
She is a good teacher, but the tests are not easy. Make sure to READ the book, and go to class, curves are given to those who attend class.
Tests are hard, and you have to study. The curve really helps if you go to class every day. Interesting lectures, take good notes and do all the readings and you'll do alright.
Tests are tough, you must read the books. She gives very interesting lectures when she stays on topic. You will write a paper and the tests are short answer and she demands quality work. But, she is funny and very knowledgable, I recommend her highly.
She is a good teacher, but the tests are tough. I had some problems with the TA, but she was very willing to help me out. She is a die-hard feminist, so think before making any comments that might offend her.
This woman is a terror, don't even think about asking about her EX-husband. Has she told you more than 80 times that she is not a lesbian?! There is no reason to take this class unless you are a male-hating person with no soul.

Haha this Prof. trips me out.
clear, undersdtanding of context
She knew a lot, but she didn't talk about things that were on the test
Unorganized, uncommunicative, focused the course on tangential matters.
let us out late and always got off topic so we never knew what was on the test, no review
She is extremely disorganized and scatter brained. She is very nice but everything you will learn is from reading the books yourself. You won't learn from her lectures!
Terrific teacher! Makes the lectures interesting and fun, but she is not an easy A. You have to come to class and take plenty of notes. Tests are not easy and she will expect college level work from you, so if all you want is the A. Don't take her. If you want to learn something, then she's your girl.
Get's off subject to eisialy. Her lectures arn't that informative but she will tell you what to read and studie the reading and lectures you will do just fine.
A tad scatterbrained, but she is very interesting and her class is alot of fun. She makes history interesting. But you have to attend class. I would take her again.
i took her my freshman. shes cool all she likes to talk about is sex but shes okay. shes kind of scattered brained though. her lectures are really vain...if you take good notes you won't really have to read the book. but she gets distracted easily...to easy and that throws off the whole class. it took us two weeks to finish one section of a chapter
The best history professor ever. Take notes and keep up with reading and you will ace this class. Some believe you do not have to read the book however this is misleading. There is a combination of book and lecture used on the tests. Do study and use the online materials available. She is quite entertaining and breathes life into History!
i really like dr. barker.. she was a good professor and she knew her subject.. be prepared to talk alot about columbus, but in all the class is pretty easy. take good notes and read your book and you'll pass with flying colors
She is a great teacher read the text and listen to her lectures she gave about 20 pts. extra credit and is extremely helpful when you have a problem!
Very knowledgable person. She loves her job, and likes to brag about how much money she makes from it. READ THE BOOK or you won't pass the tests. Take good notes, always show up on time, and don't talk or else she goes off and talks about how disrespectful student are.
As long as you read the book and pay attention in class youll have no problem. Always loved her tieing sex into every lecture, funny class.
Scatter-brained and gets off topic ALL THE TIME. But she knows her stuff when she actually talks about it. I've had her for two classes and hope not to have her for any masters classes.
She is a very sweet lady. You can tell she truly cares about her students. She definitely knows what she is talking about. TAKE HERRR, she's really funny too! =)
Very nice teacher gives alot of extra credit so passing should not be hard at all. Tests are not that difficult as long as you pay attention and read the book. She does ramble a little but I think its just because she gets in the ZONE so much.
Unique professor while still providing a learning experience. Is flexible, but reading is required if one wants to get an A. If you are taking a heavy load her class will still work. Politeness goes a long way for the success for the class.
Awesome teacher! Loves what she's doing & wants her students to succeed in the class. Would definitely recommend taking her!
Awesome professor! Loves what she's doing & wants her students to succeed in her class. I would definitely recommend taking her!
Good professor. She does get off topic at times but still ties it back to what is being discussed in class. Gives tons of extra credit opportunities
Dr. Barker is AMAZING!! She is very entertaining with her lectures! You must read the textbook and stduy notes to pass the tests! She gives points for attendance, so show up!! Overall she made history fun and interesting! I enjoyed her class!!
She's helpful, but clearly has her favorites... and they will most certainly take precedent over any non-favorite. Since this is a firt time research class for most, I just wished she offered more guidance with the paper. Even when I emailed her, I never received a response. Overall, this class is okay, but I'd recommend another professor.
Go talk to her the first week of school. if she knows you she really tries to help you do good in the class. Her test are what she says in her lectures overall she is very easy
She is an all over the place professor! But no doubt she knows what she is teaching and is passionate about it. Take advantage of the extra credit she offers, show up for class (she gives points for showing up) and take good notes. READ THE TEXTBOOK,I promise it will help you out!
She lectures over what she knows....her specialty is the Colonial Period therefore THATS ALLL SHE TALKS ABOUT!!!! She mainly talks about the puritans and she does not go by the textbook...her test are verrryyyy random!!! Take Tycashion instead!!
She was very fun. Made the class interesting. ALWAYS found a way to talk about sex. If you go to class, her power points and outlines help with the test. She is not afraid to call you out for disrespect.
She was very very funny. She made the class very interesting and I use to not like history but she made it great. If you show up for class everyday, you will do fine on the tests. Also her homework is My History Lab stuff which she'll explain, but that helps a lot too with the tests so make sure you do it. Her notes are lecture, she knows a lot.
Very nice professor. Approachable and eager to answer any questions that you have. She offers alot of extra credit points and loves what she teaches! Easy A.
By far one of my favorite professors at Sam. She loves what she teaches and does it well. She lectures a lot but if you take notes and read the book you can't possibly fail. Also gives extra credit every month (films and voting registraion). Attendance isn't mandatory but helps your grade. Want an easy A or not interested in history take her.
Very helpful. Different teaching style but agreeable and enjoyable if you pay attention. Must read to know what is going on. Overall a great professor who loves her career.
She really grew on me throughout the course. I must say though, a freshman level course doesn't need to be what she made this. There are better professors to take for this class for sure. If you look at the rest of the ratings on here, I can say that they are all accurate, which just shows how all over the place she can be.
She makes history NOT boring. She loves what she teaches and does it well. Attend class and listen, take notes, do your MHL and you will pass.
Dr. Barker is a sweet lady. She likes to cuss to make her point on some issues. She lives and eats what she teaches; it is her life. She does not give out a study guide or review, so tests are challenging even if you read and take notes. The online homework part is the easy stuff. Extra credit is rare, but there. She is entertaining though.
Loves what she teaches and is very easy to follow. She makes goofy jokes and keeps the class interesting. Highly recommend ! Perfect for a freshman class, really gets you ready for college classes .
Very funny teacher but I would NOT recommend taking her as a teacher. Makes jokes in class but very hard to follow along with. Attendance is MANDATORY if you at least want to earn a B. I'm taking her this semester and the first test she had to give 10 pt curve, second test a 20 pt curve b/c every one failed. Test aren't about what she talks about
She is an interesting teacher. She loves to cuss and talk about sex. She is hard to follow. She gets oFf track so easily and gets extremely behind on the syllabus. I would not recommend her to anyone. PLEASE READ HE BOOK TO PASS.!!!
Skim the text, take your time on the questions!,and take notes.Try not to sit in pockets of people who won't shut up.Her lectures are fun and interesting. She doesn't assign readings. They're in syllabus, but she also might not follow syllabus. Some tests had questions that were random as hell.Lovely lady. Good luck.
Dr. Barker is the most knowledgeable history prof I had. Enjoyed her class immensely
Dr. Barker is simply awesome. I would not take her for the Freshmen level classes, but she loves her students and particularly those she has had before. Very approachable and always willing to help you. There was no text book for this class, but it is not always offered, plus many may not like the topic, which was American Death Ritual.
Dr. Barker is amazing. I suck at history and I have no interest in it. She makes class so interesting and she's hilarious. I got an A in the class, which I did not expect. She gives pretty awesome curves on all her tests. There are 4 and the 4th is NOT comprehensive, it is only over the last unit. Really recommend her!!
I have taken Dr. Barker's classes 7 times. I have never met a professor so dedicated to their students. She is hilarious, intelligent, hardworking and a strong female role model. She has bent over backward for me. I can honestly say that I would not be where I am today without her guidance. She is a fantastic professor, friend and mentor!
Best professor in the department. Very spirited woman who cares a great deal about her students. If you show up and pay attention, skim your notes a couple times after that, you will do fine. I will always remember this enjoyable class.
While I enjoyed Dr. Barker's ethusiasum, I felt a little lost notes wise. She gets off topic in every lecture and never goes by her own outlines. If you read the book you will do well on the tests.
She is a good teacher.
This was a special topics class, which was American Death Ritual. The class was a very straight forward lecture with two tests, a paper on grave yards and a book review. If you took her for 1301 (and maybe some other classes) you have likely seen some of the slides and covered the material. I totally enjoyed this class and recommend it to all.
worst professor ive had in my life. i took notes non stop in her class to do better and when going over them before the test, would feel confident. but then the test came around and probably about 15% of things she said in class was on the test. she expects you to read the entire text book to fill in the gaps she left in lecture. awful teacher.
I liked Dr. Barker. However, the tests were difficult. I would take notes and read the book and I would always get a C or B. We would also have to do one paged essays in addition to test grades which were difficult. She gets behind every once in a while. She takes attendance. She gives extra credit. I liked the course but it wasn't the easiest.
I loved Dr. Barker and her class. Strict attendance policy but her class isn't difficult if you pay decent attention. Very funny and helpful. Was understanding about late work and helping me get off of academic probation.
Dr. Barker started the semester very well, but as the end of the semester is approaching shes falling apart. Her class strongly relies on the textbook and not so much on the lectures. During the lectures she is spacey and not very coherent with what is being discussed during the lectures. Good luck if you have her.
She is all over the place, does not explain herself well. If you want to have no idea what is going on all semester take her. She is very confusing and has no review for tests
She is somewhat a lovely lady, she jokes a lot. Reading from the book is mandatory for passing her exams. Even material not covered in lecture.
The research paper topic was student choice, the timeline for the breakdown of the research paper was easy to keep up with and the feedback she gave helped the students tremendously. Excellent professor.
Gets off track very easily. Much of her lecture is not on the exams
The tests are hard. More based off lectures rather than the book. Just be prepared to show up to class, pay attention, and take detailed notes. Not a hard class, there are 3 papers, 3 tests, and 10 modules. So not too demanding. Good teacher, has a tendency to get off onto silly topics, but she cares about the development of her students.
Her lectures are long and pointless. Honestly I did not take notes in this class and got a B. She says her test are based on her lectures no just her outline. Do they work you will be fine. Do not miss class she will fail you if you miss to many class days. Do not be late on assignments either. She will help if needed.
She talks quite a bit.. especially about things other than history..
Very off topic. First test got pushed back a month.
You have to listen to what she says because most of the stuff is not important Easy class to pass if you read the book entertaining
Found it difficult to stay on topic, and often didn't finish topics before the tests. She doesn't use slides with words, only pictures. Professor would start class often 20-30 minutes after scheduled time because of "rants/soap box". Seems like a good thing, but her tests are based on lectures.
She was great at lecturing. Class was easy which I liked because Im NOT a history major. I had fun showing up to her packed 9:30. She put up with my probably stupid non history major questions after class. I would say she's hot but she is married and older. Even so Im still gonna give her a pepper
Do not...I repeat DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! She shows up late to lectures, her tests have nothing to do with the lectures (except for maybe 2 out of 50 questions), and half of the time she isn't even talking about the course so your time is wasted. Please choose a different history professor. Please.
Worst teacher I have ever taken. Does not provide powerpoint with words, only pictures. She rambles during her lectures and then forgets what she was previously talking about. Tests have nothing to do with the book, only based off her lectures. Impossible to take useful notes for tests because she gets so much off topic. DO NOT TAKE!!!!!
Very unorganized and confusing.
Great professor. Excellent reading list to cover the topic. Makes you think outside the box and encourages a deeper level of understanding of the material.
She is very unorganized ! Forgets a lot of material in her lecture. Granted, she does extra credit opportunities, yet over all; power points are pictures ! ! Be prepared to take really detailed notes so you can pass the class.
Power points are pictures, her power points include an outline but it is broad. She is older so she is forgetful but she knows her history. She does extra credit if you are someone that "needs" that. She provided a free online textbook, I suggest using that towards the test. Tests are about 75% textbook and 25% from her lecture.
Shes my favorite professor so far. Her lectures are so interesting that I remembered everything that she said, I didnt do the online reading and got a 85 on a exam. she gave us a really good curve on the test too. I was sad to see her go because of medical reasons.
All the info in her lectures are not correct. Some are more based on her own beliefs and opinions. She gets way off topic and doesnt give out reviews for test. All the test are based on her lectures, the textbook is free but doesnt help much.
Well if you want to teach yourself everything then this is the class for you. The semester is almost over and I have 4 grades in two of which are exams. We mostly learn about her personal life and sometimes talk about history. Dont usually stay on topic.
Dr. Barker gets off topic a lot. All you do in class is go over powerpoint but they are just pictures... no words! Her tests are HARD. they aren't over whats in the textbook, they are over her lectures that don't make any sense sometimes. So when it comes time to study for a test she gives you no review, if you took notes, MAYBE you'll be okay.
Just dont take her class. Youll regret it if you actually want to learn.
Her lectures are pictures that she has on a powerpoint she has on Blackboard. If you attend class and write down whatever she has to say about the pictures or the key points it will be easy to pass. The test is mostly about what she says in the lectures and not about what the textbook says.
Horrible teacher but passed
Nice person but not the best teacher. Attendance is mandatory, and if you miss more than 6 classes you will not make an A. The textbook is mandatory because you have to teach yourself. She offers a lot of extra credit because she knows majority of students are failing. There are 3 essays with questions attached but tests weigh heavy.
Dr. Barker is super funny, but it's kind of hard to keep up with what she is trying to teach. I struggled on tests and quizzes (not a whole lot, but a little bit). However, she is super sweet and she does care about her students. I would not take her again, but she wasn't bad either.
Honestly the (one of) sweetest teacher I have had, unfortunely halfway through the semester she had fallen down and cracked her skull. Therefore I had only half the normal time with her. The test she curved for me because a lot of people missed the same question so she gave us 10 more points, so she is very understanding. A lot of reading. & funny
Must show up to class to know what is going on in test/quizzes. Her lectures are so confusing because she gets off topic a lot so you literally just have to take the best notes that you can. Her tests and quizzes are hard because the questions are supposed to be over her lecture and the book but she never really finishes a lecture.
Don't take her class. I'm upset because there are a lot of great things about her course: the textbook is a free PDF, she provides lots of extra credit, and the material is not challenging. She is a horrible communicator. There were instances where no one receives emails or updates for WEEKS. Things have not been graded for nearly 2 months.
This professor is among the worst I have ever had. None of the due dates for quizzes lined up with the syllabus. She never responds to emails. We went a whole month without hearing anything from her. She hasn't graded half the assignments we've turned in. And the final that was supposed to happen at 10:15, didn't happen.
Worst class Ive ever taken. Professor was MIA most of the semester and unreachable. I emailed her multiple times and never got a response. She would go weeks without posting things but saying she did, when we reached out she wouldnt answer. THEN would post them all and make them due within a couple days. I wouldnt recommend to anyone.
Went MIA the whole semester in the middle of a pandemic. Failed almost the whole class after her mistakes got called out. Did not curve did not grade assignments. Did not care. 0/10 dont recommend. Posts work with no due dates or turn in boxes. Doesnt respond to emails , does not email. Wants a pitty party. Save yourself
Doesn't respond to emails for days. Typos, conflicting due dates, no place to turn in assignments, behind schedule even though she cancelled all classes and refused to learn zoom. What was she doing? Off-topic and behind in the two lectures she had all semester. Weekly reading quizzes were practically the only grades.
She makes history fun
