geez...she talks, and it's a one-way ticket to dreamland.... Not to mention the way she either makes you feel 3 inches tall, or sends you to the TA when you ask her a simple question.
She teaches this class on a simple level. So no programming experience required. She is always helpful and understanding.
I hope you know how to program before taking this class.
She's not that hard and will help you out.
I had to go to a friend to learn the material. Shes just not an effective communicator -- welcome to the world of computer science.
Easy class but doesn't prepare you for subsequent classes. She doesn't fully explain things that are on the test and dosen't teach you what you need to move on in Computer Science. She just dosen't know what she is talking about.
Absolutely horrible teacher - incompotent isn't the word, she's lazy, petty, and generally behind. She's never on time to class and her tests are full of errors -- nice to look at though!

She is very willing to help, although not the clearest explanations. Overall fine
I had a big advantage since I already knew how to program, and yet I'd still say "wtf?" to some of her explanations.
Horrible teacher who isn't understanding of mistakes in their submissions even though she contains many errors in her assignments and problems. Boring, unclear, and not the brightest.
If you know anything about computer programing class will be a breeze. She did allow exemptions for A's which is cool, but she still not a good teacher. She is a nice lady, but she just doesn't need to be teaching this course.
If you know anything about programming this is a very simple, very easy A. Lowe isn't the best programmer or teacher... but good enough.
A decent teacher for those that are JUST coming into the programming world. If you are already knowledgeable in the comp science. world don't pick her. If you are new, go ahead she'll teach you what you need to know.
good enough. likes to give quizes when a lot of people dont show up.
aweful
Well the class isn't difficult if you have prior programming knowledge. BUT she is very difficult to understand if you don't have previous programming knowledge. Try to get DPJ for CpSc 101 instead if you can... but he's really not much better :). have fun!
Ask questions in class- she usually answers them pretty good, but if you don't ask, then she just rambles on incoherently. Reading the book helps. And don't procastinate on the assingments/labs. Go by her office or email her with questions.
Wouldn't take her unless you have prior knowledge of the class. Is not very clear and will not give much help if you go to her office. If you try hard you will figure it out though.
Bottomline: Everything I learned in this class I learned from the book or through trial and error, not her.
wow, this class sucks. Rose isnt really that bad, and some of the geniuses in my class always correct her mistakes, but me w/ no programming experience never noticed anything blatantly wrong. She's very nice and takes too much heat for being a bad teacher when she really isnt that bad at all.
Well, just to give you an idea me and another student gave her the nickname RLB. B stands for blows, you can prolly figure out the rest. It was the worst class of my entire college career and if you have any chance to get another teacher do it. She actually is a nice lady though, but a bad teach.
Terrible teacher. Does not give examples of code, only shows you theories behind the code. Unfortunately she's the only prof. for this course, so you have to suffer through her. She will make you hate programming.
i had never programmed before i got in this class, and sadly, i still don't know how to program. i feel that it is mostly do to her unclear teaching methods. i would not take her again. and if you're a computer engineering major take cpsc 101 first...all of those people seem to be better off.
Rose was my very first proffesor in college, her class was my first programming class ever. Because of this i chose her for 111 as well. Her teachign style isnt for those who like to be spoonfed answers. She makes you find your own mistakes. She is so nice so build a good decorum with her! She let me make up an exam i SLEPT thru.
Really an easy class if you have prior programming knowledge. She may not be the best cpsc professor but if you pay attention you will learn what is needed to get an A. Make sure you ace the labs, you really do not have to study for tests especially if you go to class
Only passed this class through having a great lab TA. She can stand up there and talk but never teach anything. Try not to take this class.
If this is your first programming class don't let her discourage you. I felt like I had to teach myself because I got lost in her explainations. She really doesn't have a good approach for explaining the fundamentals. But if you stick with it and make an effort to learn it yourself, it'll come together in subsequent classes.
good teacher, very nice. Has a problem because she is more experienced in java, and only uses VI, this is a problem if the class is in C and you use emacs. but the basics are mostly the same. I think she does a good job breaking everything down, and making the material easy to understand. I would recomend her for 111 especially over others
Good professor but lectures are directly from the powerpoint slides. Tests are not hard if you read all the slides. Make sure to do well in lab.
There are times it sounds like she's not sure what she's talking about, and it's because she hasn't been doing Java for very long. Regardless, she's one of the nicest professors I've ever had.
needs work
I think her quality varies by semester. She was willing to help out with minor issues with our programs. Lecture is a bit boring but it isn't too hard.
HORRIBLE TEACHER. ALWAYS makes mistakes which can really confuse you when you are studying or practicing. Nice lady, but she really can't teach. Lectures from power point, but usually skips over half the slides. My class was in C and we did a lot with ppm images files, which sucked big time!! I got B in the class. Take Westball if possible.
Rose is a nice lady but wow I do not like taking computer science from her. She makes really easy stupid mistakes in class and doesn't have a clue why her programs wont work. She doesn't really explain why anything works either. We did damn PPM images in C for some reason and that is just awful! I like C but doing images in C is retarted.
Her lack of ability to teach is overshadowed only by her general incompetence. And don't expect to take your tests in silence. After handing out a quiz, don't be surprised to find her telling you a story totally unrelated to programming. If you are unlucky enough to have her class for your first programming class, invest in lots of "how-to" books.
Doesnt give examples are adaquetly explain why you use a certain syntax in a program
Well lets see, she doesn't seem to really know the course material, she commonly has errors on her assignments and tests, and she is very unhelpful outside the classroom. Quote When Asked For A Review Sheet For Final Exam: "Well... I suppose I could type up a few points, but you'll have to email me in a few days because I'm sure I'll forget."
I've had her twice, made an A both times. I would rather have taken someone else and gotten 2 B's. Expect to be ill prepared for any future courses
HORRIBLE Teacher! Answers your questions with questions and leaves you even more confused! Its hard to grasp much from class because you are trying to keep up with her the whole time! I learned by going to lab, NOT from her!!! If you want anything out of this class, AVOID her!!! =[
Lectures are not very informative. Doesn't seem to know much outside of basic code. Easiest way to learn is to simply copy down the code she displays on the projector. That and go to the lab. They are much more helpful there and it is much more hands on.
This is a 101 course but this woman speaks to you like you've been programming for years, i had no clue what she was talking about half the time, and neither did she for that matter. She does not explain, she does not help, and although she seems nice, she'll rip apart if you go to office hours for help. I am passing but i won't be prepared for 102
Take the (Laptop) course because I disagree with what everyone else says. Very nice lady.
She acts like everyone has years of programming skills and will make you feel not only confused but also stupid for asking most questions. Avoid having her as a teacher, she is unwilling to help a student learn the material. Lab will help with understanding concepts as long as you copy her notes exactly from class.
I feel like Ms. Lowe did a pretty good job explaining the code. I've never programmed before, and sometimes it was over my head, but she is always willing to help you during her office hours. This helped out a lot. Labs are easy but make sure your program compiles before you submit it!!!
Lowe seems to be a nice lady but when she starts giving out assignments and test you will think different. If you have never programmed before i would not take her. There is no partial credit on her test. if something is off with your code and it doesn't compile then you are in trouble. almost like she doesn't even look at the code.
This teacher is very hard to comprehend. And if you're looking for a teacher who answers questions and works well with you, then look elsewhere, bc she is either smart about it, or leaves you with more questions than when you started. Her grading policy is also very strict, making it difficult to make a grade that actually reflects your knowledge
seems nice, but you teach yourself everything. and she is very strict about program assignments, never gives you any extra credit or chance to do late work even if you have good reasons. rude also. Would NOT recommend ESPECIALLY if you don't already know what you're doing!! seriously.. terrible out of class help and crappy reviews. IF any at all
she never answers questions.. and makes you want to cry, cuss, or just be pissed off after you approach her for help. Program grades are hard bc they HAVE to be perfect and she doesn't give you ANY help.. and almost EVERY1 has to want a review.. IF she even has one. I would NOT recommend her! ESPECIALLY if you don't know a lot about CpSc already!
She isn't great but she isn't that bad either. She explains everything in a satisfactory way though she grades fairly strict. Honestly the classes you will take later take way more time to do the programming though. She is helpful but only if you put in some effort towards learning about programming.
She forgets that this is a beginners programing class. She recently went to paper exams for a 'computer' class. The exams are hard, and they do not test your programing ability at all. I made As on all the program assignments, but failed the tests she gave.
What a miserable class. The teacher doesn't know what she's talking about, making it difficult to learn anything from her. If you don't know the languages proficiently prior to taking this class-you're in trouble. She expects you to know everything before you take the class. To survive, visit a TA, or know someone who had a good teacher to explain it
I don't know why everyone complains. First of all, course content is not her fault. 102 is a hard course because of raytracing which Dr. Lowe doesn't decide. I believe the raytracer isn't really something taught, it's just done. Lectures aren't necessary but she's more than willing to help you if you just talk to her.
I don't know why this professor isn't well liked. She's extremely nice, she's friendly, and she will do everything she can to help you out. She held office hours on a Sunday for those who needed extra help. A very good teacher who is getting a bad rap. I don't understand the hate.
I took a lot of programming in high school. She is not knowledgeable about the material at all. She got a 70 when she took one of our tests. She doesn't give credit for programs even if you write them unless they compile completely. She is too lazy to give partial credit for anything. Try to get Sterling if you can.
I would not take her unless you've had experience with programming. Her exams are really tricky, especially with the wording and number of answer choices. She is in her office during office hours, but usually her responses to your questions are really vague and non-helpful. If you can, sign up for her as a last resort.
Instructor is unapproachable and often makes assignments harder than they should be. Takes points off of programs for very minuscule details that don't really relate to course material but are rather her personal preference. Other than that, I thought that the course was set up well and was very organized.
Had this instructor for 2 class - 102 and 231. I was willing to cut her some slack for 102 since it is a difficult course that no one wants to teach, and I ended up making an A. I took her again for 231 and it was awful. She was not willing to help out and if no one asked for materials, she didn't give them. Good luck with that class.
She pretty much reads over the notes. I guess she'll try to explain something if you ask her. 102 is overall a bad class and she doesn't make it much better.
Extremely unhelpful teacher in general. Just reads off of slides and is very unorganized. Makes her assignments incredibly difficult for an entry level class. Her exams also have ridiculous programs to write in a short period of time. Overall just a nightmare of a class. Avoid having her in any class if possible. If you do have to, good luck...
Absolutely horrid. She doesn't teach you anything at all, and she refuses to believe that she is wrong even when she is most of the time. I feel that I will leave this class knowing no more than when I came in. She should not be allowed to teach this course.
a little disorganized in her lectures, but seems to know her stuff. Exam material varies some by semester, but follows lectures & labs. She gives study guides ahead of the tests, so follow those and start early on projects, and you'll be fine. Labs will save your grade and sanity. Not bad, just don't procrastinate (at all).
She lectures with the mindset that she's just repeating what the students already know. If you don't know anything, you won't be able to take much away. She just doesn't know how to communicate effectively, and she doesn't know what the students know or how to relate the material to what we already know. She's the worst lecturer I've had.
Dr. Lowe is a very bad teacher. She lectures with another professor's notes and puts no thought toward what she is saying and how students receive the information. She says she will help you but is useless and will do whatever she can not to help. She is very lazy and does not have good communication skills or clarification skills.
Rose Lowe is an average professor. Her greatest flaws are lack of organization and laziness. She takes forever to grade assignments. Her notes are very unorganized, sometimes even sloppy. Sure, she's a nice lady, but she doesn't do justice to the material and doesn't prepare you well enough for future courses that build on top of 231.
I have mixed feelings on Lowe. On one hand, she knows a lot of the material due to her experience. On the other hand, she is pretty bad at communicating it and relating it to what an intermediate-level CS undergrad would know. The exams are almost identical to the practice exams, so make sure you understand the practice exams and you will do fine.
She's alright. Going to class is only useful to know when quizzes and tests are coming up. She's helpful in her office hours as long as you show a little effort. Also, her powerpoints have some information in them that is just completely wrong, and I'm sure she hasn't changed them for several years. Not the worst teacher, but shes your only choice
For both CPSC 2100 and 2310, Dr. Lowe seemed to rarely be prepared for class. Exams took weeks (sometimes months) before they were graded. The only saving grace of this course was the easiness of the grading. You can exempt the final with a 90 average, and projects and exams tend to be easy A's provided a little bit of effort.
Older Professor that rarely prepares lectures, and has used the same info since Smotherman taught the course in 2000. Will teach exactly what is going to happen in lab, and tests, so that you cannot complain. Doesn't answer questions and will divert from answering emails. In my opinion, do not take this teacher if you value your time.
Extremely condescending, lazy, and certainly has no passion for teaching. She enjoys listening to herself speak and WILL NOT answer questions clearly in any manner. She often ignores emails, takes an incredibly long time to grade, and will make you feel bad for asking questions. Overall class isn't terribly hard. I got an A but it's not a given.
Long boring lectures, often rambles on irrelevant material, even if you're interested in the material (like I was) she manages to make you hate it. A lot of the material you learn is pointless, but easy if you have a reasonable mathlogic background. Be prepared to teach yourself and have no idea what's going to be on the tests.
Dr. Lowe is very knowledgeable about computer organization. Not the most exciting class, but it easily survivable. Show up to class and study a bit for the tests, and you should be fine.
Dr. Lowe is often several minutes late to class, unprepared for class, and presents herself unprofessionally. She also isn't great at explaining things and I didn't feel like the lectures were worth paying attention to. Also, when I asked questions, her answers were really unhelpful. The material isn't difficult so it's not a big deal but ehhhhhhhh
Lowe is a nice lady that knows her material, but just can't communicate it well to her students. Programming assignments tend to be straight forward if you can teach yourself and figure them out. Exams are similar to practice exams, but some semesters the flow of material is different so practice exams are useless. Be prepared to teach yourself.
She was pretty good and is a nice professor. The class is pretty easy and the projects, although tedious, but helped me understand the concepts better.
Don't. Just don't. The only ones who like her class are the ones who are geniuses. Avoid at all costs. Please. Save yourself. Ask anyone at Clemson who is a Computer Science major about her, and you'll get a moan in response. Don't do it.
This class should have and would have been easier if this class was taught by a better professor. She made her exams unnecessarily harder this year (I know this because she gave us her previous exams to study). Refuses to post answers to the study guide so you are left wondering. Not the nicest person either. Always late and unorganized.
Ok lectures for this class, long but informative. Very punitive grading focusing on small mistakes. Expect to be screwed by minuscule documentation and formality errors. I went to her for help and she chuckled while telling me its not for everybody and didn't help. This is my second class with her and I'd like to never see her again if possible.
Really quite a terrible instructor. Everyone that took the class that I spoke to felt the same way. CPSC 1070 is the same as CPSC2100 I believe. This class wasn't hard, this was my first time writing in C&C++ The first or second day we had a placement test went badly but I stayed in and got an A Lowe doesnt understand questions and its a bad prof.
If you're reading this you likely don't have any other option than to take Dr. Lowe. You will hate the course and the work and her so just get over that now. Study for the quizzes, they will help more than you know. Start looking for someone decent in assembly NOW, as she will be no help to you, and TAs are hit and miss. Good luck.
Dr. Lowe teaches Assembly and it's a hard topic to make interesting. Just pay attention and study. Many students blow off this course and end up failing. Take it very seriously
Dr. Lowe can be good and bad. Every class is a lecture over slides. Soemtimes during lecture she gets lost and confused, and you wonder if shes teaching you or herself. I learned more from lab and the TA's. Also, she takes forever to grade things.
Though she is not the best professor, she is also not the worst. Pretty bad with grading and very unorganized, also kind of boring but if you know little bit of programming then you will be fine. Very helpful during her office hours and quick email reply. Tries to teach material well. Nice woman. I do not get it why she has so many bad reviews.
I do not get it why she has so many negative reviews. She is not bad. Yes I agree she is unorganized person and her lectures are heavy but other than that she is a really nice person. If you have any problem and go to her office hours, she will help you and answer any questions you have. She tries her best to teach and care for her students.
Prof. Lowe is kind and understanding as a person, but her lectures consisted entirely of lecture slides which she didn't frequently elaborate on. She also has lackluster knowledge of how to use computers for a CS professor, and she frequently struggled to do so much as sign into the lecture room computer to start a lesson.
Professor Lowe is honestly the worst Professor I have ever had at Clemson. The class was horribly disorganized and the content covered in her lectures was not what was covered on the quizzes and the exams were not organized and consistently had several duplicated questions or questions that were wrong altogether.
Her questions consist of asking you to read the instructions, or which (labeled) button should be pressed. She is late to class and cannot use a computer proficiently. Her exams contained tasks that aren't executable, and when this was pointed out, she said "It worked for me," which is insufficient given her computer skills. Easy, but insufferable.
80 year old COMPUTER SCIENCE professor with little to no ability to use COMPUTERS... Extremely easy class it just gets on my nerves why professors that can't teach a class properly are getting paid to do it.
Overall Mrs. Lowe's course is fairly clear cut and easy but she does not teach the actual material. Its mostly self taught but the material is simple so don't stress if you have her. she takes attendance code but is not required, though she will give some sort of extra credit if you consistently show up. She is a very kind lady.
She is a retired old lady who loves teaching this course. However, she is incompetent with using technology, and she often cannot find or use the features she lectures about. You must self-teach and learn from the lab and assignments, but the class and exams are easy. Sweet lady but is not capable of teaching, as she doesn't explain the software.
For a computer science professor, Professor Lowe has no clue how to use a computer during lectures and often showed up late.
Professor Lowe isn't a great professor but attendance is not mandatory and you literally only need to go to the labs to get an A in this class. There were 2 exams but as long as you pay attention in lab you'll be fine. Easiest A I've ever gotten.
Avoid at all costs! She doesn't actually teach, can't answer questions about the material, and always has an attitude when asked about something. Also, if you have a Mac, don't bother taking it because it's nearly impossible to submit some assignments. She did nothing to prepare us for the final and ignored all emails and canvas messages.
As much as she doesn't understand most technology (canvas, etc.) she is a weapon when it comes to access and excel. I was shocked that she was as genuinely good as she is. I hardly attended lecture because it was just reading from slides-- you can 100% pass as long as you glance at the notes before an exam and do your work in labs.
By far the most unorganized professor I have ever had. Shows attitude over the smallest things and is very passive-aggressive. Did not learn anything from her lectures. Is no help if you have a question.
Easy A. But gosh, you will get a headache from this waste of time class.
Very unorganized. Showed up to the exam right at the start, the exam wasn't posted for 5-10 minutes, then she didn't know her own access code and couldn't actually start the exam for 15-20 minutes. Class is very easy, but the lectures are useless, and the lab is unnecessarily long, and they make you stay on Zoom the full time for no reason.
Dr. Lowe is a nice lady and does explain the material but man is this class boring. Dr. Lowe also is not very engaging, and if you have a MacBook, you may struggle with the Access Unit and certain steps on Excel. Overall its not awful and figureoutable and you'll probably be stuck taking this class so may as well just suck it up.
