Her accent makes her hard to understand. She provides outlines for the test though.
Very good teacher!!
She's hard to understand at first but it gets easier.
Hard to understand but I got an A.... super good. YOu ll get used to her accent and then you ll understand her.
Professor Avin is always availible to help you, and she explains everthing well.
Awesome! Super easy and helpful! A little hard to understand at first but you'll get used to it.
She was very helpful not only with class material but general school life! She tells you exactly what you want and makes sure you have enough practice. She teaches so people understnad and pass with good grades!
venus and serena's long lost older sister- good teacher- give it a week and you'll start to understand her accent....tests are really easy if you study any of the material and math/graph work.....yeah, she's a tennis star in disguise....
She is extremely nice and knows what she is talking about. Her class is really easy and she gives a lot of opportunities so you dont' do bad. She has a little speech problem, but it's nothing major.
You will get used to how she talks. Overall pretty decent and isn't too hard of a grader. She uses a study guide book that will help throughout the course a ton!
This class is really boring but it's pretty easy. All the problems on quizes/tests are easy but a lot of the multiple choice questions are hard with unclear answers. Her accent is annoying and I don't care what others said, I didn't understand her anymore at the end of the year than I did on the first day of class. Boring, but really easy.
Very clear- gives outlines for each chapter that state exactly what you need to know for the test. Gives a lot of extra credit opporunities, both on exams and outside of class. Gives quizzes before test that take material directly from the test. I also had no problem understanding her accent. I would take her again.
Good teacher with easy to follow material. WARNING: She is very liberal and quite supportive of socialist ideas. Her lectures are ideologically biased in this sense.
Dr. Avin is probably the best professor I have had at UWEC. She demands excellent work for an excellent grade. At the same time her demands are not overbearing. Her classes will challenge your ways of thinking.
good teacher overall
She uses alot of Powerpoint so her lectures get really boring really fast.
Avin is a very nice woman who is usually willing to put in time outside of class if necessary. This is a very boring class. Countless hours of watching powerpoint presentations and taking notes.
A Nice lady, and explains things well. She Goes over things, over and over, which is boring but you really learn what you are doing. If you pay attention you will do well.
Excellent professor, by far my favorite... She's very clear and offers a lot of extra credit. She's passionate and motivating. Definitely recommended!
From a foeign country and is hard to understand.
Lots of reading and all essay exams. Lectures are boring and dry. The class isn't very hard, but I thought I would learn a lot more.
Avin is kind of hard to understand with her accent, but it grows on you. The class isn't really hard at all. All you need to know if given right to you in powerpoint lectures. She offers a lot of extra credit and lets you drop your lowest quiz scores.
I found that she made what we were learning clear and understandable.
She is hard to understand, but the material is interesting and the course is fairly easy. Getting an A is definitely possible.
her worksheets are basically the quizzes and her powerpoints are basically the tests and she explains everything pretty clear, despite the accent....
Easy to follow and very williing to help
She's a very good teacher, but sometimes hard to understand because she's from Hati. She prints out notes and gives you plenty of opportunity to raise your grade. She is a little intimidating but overall a very good teacher
She is very helpful if you go in for office hours. She is a very intelligent woman and not only knows a lot about ECON, but also a lot about other things. I liked hearing what she had to say, but the class was boring and it was easy to zone because of her accent. She is also very intimidating.
Class was the same everyday; powerpoint, and attendance at the end of class. I have never been so bored. Class difficulty is midranged to easy, but there so many better econ teachers on campus.
I love Prof. Avin! She's extremely nice and, for the most part, easy to understand. Lectures put me to sleep more than once--powerpoint in a dark room. Quizzes almost every week, powerpoint notes on D2L. Almost impossible not to pass this class.
Dr. Avin's class was easy. If you show up, read the book, buy the workbook, print off the powerpoints and study guide and use them, you will get an A. Her tests are based off of the study guide and workbook. Some of the test questions come right out of the workbook.
Avin sucked. Shes so hard to understand and studders through the WHOLE class. Class consists of powerpoints every day, so its easy to zone out. Tests are IMPOSSIBLE, her multiple choice is soo hard!!! AVOID THIS CRAPPY TEACHER
Avin is a super easy teacher. She tests are pretty much her powerpoints. If you print off the powerpoints you'll do fine. Quizes are easy, tests are pretty easy. She's real easy to talk to and ask questions. I personally don't like economics, but she made it easy to understand. TAKE HER!
Expect to fall asleep, she has a very soothing voice and gives lectures in a dark room with a powerpoint point aid. I fell asleep on a number of occassions. Lots of reading, lots of true/false quizzes, all exams are written essay, not hard to get a good grade if you try.
Pretty easy class. Tests are the most challenging part, but as long as you study her power points that she puts on d2l you will do fine. Randomly takes roll so you can skip class quite a bit and as long as you print off the power points you don't have to worry about getting behind. Lots of office hours.
Extremely easy but very very boring. All she does is teach from the powerpoint. Just study that and you will do fine. Easy A if you can manage to stay awake during lecture.
HORRIBLE. Powerpoints are useless and tests cover material that isn't discussed in that thought process. Essays on tests have to be in her exact words or they are wrong. Extremely boring and accent is very hard to understand. Asks pointless questions about topic that you don't understand. AVOID THIS PROFESSOR!!!
Avin does not enjoy teaching 104. She doesn't prepare for class, but uses the powerpoints to guide her so she rambles. If you have any interest in economics or finance and what a real foundation DO NOT TAKE AVIN.
EASY CLASS, kinda hard to understand her talk but you really don't need to listen to her or show up to class often besides test/quiz days. Tests and quizzes are all DIRECTLY from the POWERPOINT, word for word. Study powerpoints for 1/2 hour before tests and quizzes and a B is easy. Show up fridays for extra credit
Smart woman. knows her stuff. kind of boring, but she really gets into her lectures.
Avin is kinda a joke in 104.. She may be smart, but it's tough to stay awake.. Class may seem super easy (because the material lectured is easy) but she pulls test material out of her behind and tests on the most rediculous things.. I got an A-, but you have to WORK for it, predicting her tests.
Do not participate in her class or go to her for help afterwards unless you want someone to continuously belittle and make you feel stupid. Also don't bring up material from future chapters. She will deny it exists and insist you are incorrect. Then go on to use your comments as an example of the principle.
I didn't even go to her class. When I did, all I did in the class is sleep, text, draw. I went to her class tipsy, toxicated, baked and everything. But I still took the highest score in the class one time on mid-term. I hate how she teaches and her accent. She has a favorite student but you don't wanna be one. I dont tell u not to take this class.
Professor Avin is a great professor. She's a bit hard to understand at the beginning at the semester, but you get used to her accent. She is VERY organized and the class is a breeze. Final is not cummulative.
Easy class. hard to understand at first. all readings are on powerpoints so you don't need to read the text book
Amazing professor. She really cares about her students and will definitely go out of her way to help you in any way possible. If you have the chance to take her, do it!
Professor Avin is AWESOME. She's super helpful and cares about her students' success. She once sat down with me when I was eating dinner to have a conversation about how school was going. She really wants her students to succeed, and gives ample extra credit opportunities. She made economics a lot less dry for me. Recommended highly!
At the start of the semester i had trouble understanding the teachers accent, but got used to it after a couple weeks. I always felt unprepared going into tests or exams but did well.
VERY EASY PROFESSOR.
If you're someone who doesn't like reading textbooks, Avin is the professor to take! All test/quiz material is on the powerpoints, look them over an hour or so before the exam and you're golden. Other than that, Avin is really passionate about what she does and cares about her students. Lectures can get a bit boring, but it's econ.
The lectures are extremely boring. You learn a lot, but sometimes it's really hard to stay awake. Don't bother reading the textbook, just study the powerpoints and you'll have no trouble getting an A.
If you can get past the accent and boring lectures then this is a decent class. No homework, quizzes aren't very hard and tests are completely off of power points but you do need to study.
Dr. Avin is very passionate about economics which is inspiring. However, her class is extremely boring but she LOVES it when people come to visit her during office hours. No homework but chapter quizzes and tests. The final is not cumulative which is nice.
Avin is so nice! Makes jokes but lectures can get boring. Good professor to take if you have to take ECON 103/104. Quizzes and tests are not bad either.
Confusing and really boring
Class is extremely boring. Thankfully she makes the power points available online so you can read through them before exams. She does have an accent, however I had no problem understanding her. Tests/quizzes are very difficult. And there is no homework. She gives a bunch of extra credit though. I wouldn't recommend this teacher.
Has an accent, but not too difficult to understand. Lectures get a bit long, but if you can get past that, very good teacher. Knows the subject very well, and is more than willing to work with students and give extra help where needed. No homework, and gives opportunities for extra credit. Definitely would take a class with her again.
avin is a good professor! this class is easy if you have taken 103. she gives current event quizzes for easy points and provides chapter guidelines for each chapter and take questions off it to put on quizzes. i would definitely recommend her
Not a hard class as long as you do the chapter guidelines and worksheets, she pulls test questions right from them. Incredibly long and boring lectures but the tests and quizzes are pretty easy as long as you look your stuff over
She doesn't take attendance so you can skip if you want. I wouldn't skip all the time because it's important to be there to hear announcements and learn the material, but if you have taken Macro Economics before then you do have some leeway.
She may be a good professor for on campus classes but not online. She is kind of average teacher, you will not bore but will also not enjoy. Tests are hard as crap. Two questions in quizzes and five to seven questions in test were always out of power point and readings. Avoid taking her online.
Do not take this professor! I did research with this professor and she is the absolute worst I've ever worked with. She is disrespectful, rude, and not helpful. You have no idea what she wants from you and then criticizes any work you bring to her, even though she gave no guidelines. She will always be right in her mind and won't negotiate anything
Really knows what she is talking about, sometimes hard to understand but after you get used to her accent it's usually pretty easy. Tests are pretty much what you expect and aren't too hard as long as you study, Basically if you try in this class you will do good.
No way I'd take her again. All she does is talk at you off a powerpoint every class period, ZERO creativity and really hard to stay awake. She goes really fast and makes it difficult to take notes, and is not very understanding at all. Her accent is doable but annoying. The class is not that hard but you won't get much out of it. Take someone else
One of the best professors I have ever had! Yes, her lectures can be boring but she gives you everything you need off of her own powerpoints and uploads a sheet for each chapter that tells you exactly what you need to know for the tests! No surprises! She also wants to get to know you on a more personal level. Like your goals, likes/dislikes, etc.
She has a very harsh accent that is very hard to understand. She reads straight off the power points which makes lectures really long.
Either she dramatically changed her ciriculum, or most of the past reviewers are delusional. I'll keep it short- the average quiz and test scores are almost always in the 60% range, I think that speaks for itself.
The class is literally 90 minutes of her reading off of powerpoints in a monotone voice. You are given a list of "guidelines" for each powerpoint, which is essentially useless because you have to learn 90% of the HIGHLY technical, almost impossible to understand terms, lists, formulas, etc. Test grades are always low for everybody I talk to. AVOID
There are A LOT of readings out of class and then we get into groups and go over in class. Can be unorganized leaving students with questions all the time. Sometimes it seems like she doesn't know what she is doing. Sometimes when she answer student's question she acts like she already answered it or had it written down. Otherwise she's not horribl
Hard to understand at first, but you get used to it.
Be prepared to spend 2-3 hrs/day on reading and homework. Each assignment (1-2/day) requires reading a 10-30 pg scholarly article; however, they are interesting, relevant to the course, and highlight various perspectives. Avin does a great job of challenging students to think outside the box. I learned so much from this course and highly recommend!
Rose-Marie is one of the most inconsistent, harsh graders. Her exams are all essays, and do not expect to receive A's on them because she will rip you apart no matter what, she told me what to fix, I fixed it for the next exam, and then I got points off for including what she told me to. You have reading homework every class period. LOTS of it.
Unfortunately, the worst professor I've ever had... She reads straight from the ppt, assigns large readings every class and expects a summary from each one. There is a current events quiz nearly every class as well as an entire book analysis that requires 4 papers. She gives terrible feedback and doesn't care much for the student outcome
This professor expects way too much from her students in Econ 356. There is a lot of reading, writing, and her grading scale is inconsistent. If you value your time and have a tough semester, DO NOT take this class. Dr. Avin is very unorganized and crams a lot of work into the semester.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. All homework is reading long articles and lectures are her reading off a Powerpoint. There are 4 papers for one book. I got C's and D's on the papers and essay tests and I always saw her for help to learn how to improve and my scores never went up. This is the first class I've failed in my life and it messed up my GPA.
Very knowledgeable professor. She is passionate about economics and wants everyone to succeed. We only had one exam, but it was pretty hard as it covered a lot of topics. Otherwise class was enjoyable, she came prepared and connected it to real life situations which helped us further learn the information.
Professor Avin spends the entire lecture reading off of her slides that do not pertain to the assigned readings at all. Also, be prepared to talk about Feminism in every lecture, instead of topics actually related to the course.
Professor Avin only cares about her opinion. If you don't write what she wants she will fail you. Worst Professor I have a had at UWEC and I am getting a B in the class. The average is probably in the C or D range.
If you write towards her opinions you will do well. She does not care about students other opinions. This class is very different from econ classes, DO NOT take for an econ class.
Do not take this professor! All exams are ESSAY BASED and are graded very hard. If you don't hit every point from the slides she will take off multiple points. The class is just one long PowerPoint slide that she reads off of with little description. First half of class is all theory based thought. If you need a Econ elective dont take this class.
This is required for WGSS major/minor. There are 2 readings/week, that you write summaries on. They are very helpful to understanding content! You also facilitate 1 discussion, and write a midterm paper. For the final project you present on a topic and write a paper on it. Do the readings and go to class, you'll be fine!
I don't recommend taking Avin unless you are a hardcore liberal. Basically, she thinks white people are evil and capitalism oppresses people. Did not learn anything useful in this class.
I don't understand why there's so many reviews regarding her 'opinion' on certain issues. She discusses legitimate issues. Have an open mind and you'll be fine. However, she assigns an insane amount of reading and work all in the last half of the semester. Be ready to drop everything you have to do in all your other classes.
I got a decent grade in the class but you have to cater to her. You must follow her formats specifically or you won't get full points. This class is a lot more work than it should have been, especially for an elective. Expect to spend at least 2-3 hours outside class for each in-class meeting. Lots to memorize. She can be condescending at times.
Inflexible in method of teaching and mindset. It's doubtful you will actually learn much of the (actually rather interesting) course material. Somehow finds a way to simultaneously condescend and expect way too much of students. Attendance, though mandatory, will not help you in any way to learn the material... it will only waste your time.
This is the required capstone for WGSS majors & minors. You have a 7-week internship with a local non-profit. During this time, you will not meet for class. I think we met for class for a total of 4 weeks. There are weekly journal summaries due to talk about the internship. Overall, a very good class that offers an amazing experience.
Written Exams, followed by lots of reading and writing, expects the best out of you.
Dr. Avin is the worst professor I have ever had. She is extremely rude both in class and during office hours. She states her opinions as facts and her exams are all essays so it's all based on her opinion. Also, you read a book and write three papers but never talk about it in class. WHATEVER YOU DO, ABSOLUTELY DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. I'M SERIOUS!!
Professor Avin is an extremely unique professor. Shes has a unique extreme bias, a unique way of disrespecting students that come to her office for help, and very unique papers where you read an entire book that has little correlation to the class but never discuss it. I wouldnt recommend this class to my worst enemy. Please stay away if possible
If I could give her a 0/5 I would. Worst professor at UWEC. Really tough grader, impossible to get all the points for an assignment. She has a really thick accent so you won't understand anything that she says. Attendance is mandatory, but it was the most pointless lecture/class ever. If you end up taking her, good luck.
I took this during the summer and was way overwhelmed. TONS of reading every single day with papers due every day. You also have to comment on classmates posts. 4 videos to watch and write papers on, as well as, read a novel and write a formal 10 page paper by the end of class. TOO much to do that you can't put extra time into each assignment.
