Very emotional teacher. Cares about her material but does a horrible job explaining things. Will often cry during class. In a class of over 100, she assigns essay questions on exams which are often over the average students head. Listening is very important. Just a bad teacher.
Class content does not make course description. Class tends to focus on more aspects of ethnomusicology than on "confronting significant works of musical art on their own terms". Teacher is very scatterbrained and her notes/exams display this. Professor cannot manage her own powerpoint slides or post them on blackboard effectively. AVOID
Just awful.... teaches the class like most students know 3 years worth of musical training when in reality it is an entry level course. Way too focused on her own thoughts and personal feelings about music. Class is not interesting just plain bad. Do not take it unless you have to.
This teacher doesn't really know what she's doing. As someone who has a strong musical background, I can say that she doesn't teach anything that would be valuable to you in a more advanced course. She just stands and lectures, more about how she feels about music than music itself. If you want to learn anything at all, AVOID THIS CLASS!
This class was just so disorganized. My main complaint is that it took FOREVER to get back ANY assignment grades. How can I be expected to write another paper when the one I wrote over a month ago hasn't been graded still?! Also, the reading assignments are pretty useless.
I would have to dissagree with all of the comments that have been posted about this professor. She's very nice and extremely willing to help if something does not make sense. The textbook is kind of boring and hard for me to read but that is the only bad part about the class. Good course to take if you need to get your FPA and history credits.
this is a good class if you have a music background, she is always willing to help, and tries to get people involved in the class lectures.
This class puts you to sleep from the 100000 degree heat in the room and the crappy music we have to listen to...do not take this class
she's nice but the class sucks. theres no real need for a required course to go that far back in music history. Take advantage of office hours and you will probably scrape by.
Extremely helpful outside of class, and does her best to make lectures interesting. The books are expensive, but they're used a lot.
Professor Pruiksma is in the unique position of being both incredibly friendly and kind and also brilliant as hell, but she has trouble reaching her students sometimes. She is extremely accommodating and generous with her out of class time.
Nice person, terrible teacher for students who have no musical background. The class I am taking is supposed to be general education course and it is my hardest class because her teaching does nothing. She just reads the power points and creates no discussion because no one has a clue whats going on. Hard to believe she is still a teacher.
Terrible class to take as a gen-ed requirement. She expects you to be engaged. If you aren't interested in music, do not take this class.
Very sad to hear people dislike this Prof. She is a wonderful person who loves what she teaches. If you need help or are confused, do not hesitate to seek her help. She does much better one-on-one. Used one powerpoint, mostly reads her notes for lecture. Note taking not really necessary, but an interest in music is required for this class.
This teacher is AMAZING, she's brilliant and wants to actually get something out of the class! Be willing to do some interesting listening and actually work. She's super enthusiastic and gives intriguing lectures!!!
Worst instructor I have ever had. Incredibly dry personality. I took this as gen-ed and she speaks of terms as if everyone is a music major. Had no idea what was going on, and her tests are absolutely dreadful. Do not take this class, or anything she teaches for that matter. Worst experience I have ever had in all my years of schooling.
She treats students as if they are music majors even though it is an intro class. Starts class everyday ten minutes early. Tests were way too long even though she said they wouldn't be. Too much reading in my opinion and I would not recommend this class to ANYBODY.
Rose is a sweet person, she just does not fit as a professor. She is very timid and short-sticked with her anger towards unintelligent students. The assignments are super rough, she's a tough grader, and the tests are insanely long and hard. It has a lot of reading, and attending class is a must.
Quizzestests are long and often go longer than the class time. Paper topics are vague and not exactly pertinent to class topics and the readings for class are super long. The movies she picks can be interesting, but she makes them super boring. Participation is easy and usually done in groups. She's nice, but I won't take a class with her again.
If you are looking into this class as a discovery course, find another one! Unless you are a music major, this class will not come easy to you. I had to really push to get a B in this class (usually an A student). If you miss one class, you're grade will suffer.
Rose is one of the most helpful and dedicated professors at UNH. She will go above and beyond to make sure you understand the material.
I took this class as a discovery class, and was actually very excited about it at first, until I realized how painfully dry it turned out to be. She is passionate about what she is teaching, however, she does not do a good job at reaching out to students, and grabbing their attention. There is also way too much homework.
Nicest woman but power points are unclear and very very dry. Probably 5 sentences on each slide but formatted as a question. Very confusing notes. Her office hours are slim (only 2 hours two days a week) Missed one class and my grade went down five points. Expects you to know all musical terms like you're a master. Nice woman horrible professor
She's a really nice person. PARTICIPATE IN CLASS SHE WILL LIKE YOU AND GRADE YOU MUCH EASIER. Add some personality to your assignments and she'll seriously cut you slack if you do bad on one assignment. She gives you a lot of extra credit if you just seriously give it a good shot. Talk to her, she's really kind and appreciates students who try.
Avoid at all cost. Period. Blank. Nothing else has to be said.
Her lectures are very boring. Her powerpoint are not very informational and are very bland. She does not explain assignments fully. And she expects students who are just taking this as a discovery to know advanced musical terms.
Great subject. But poorly taught. She's super nice and will work with you but class is BORING.
She is a very nice teacher when you talk to her. But she expects students to come into the class as experts in the subject and now everything already. Her PowerPoints give no information and she gives many pop quizzes. The lectures are dry and long. It is easy to get a good grade in the class over all.
This teacher is terrible. I took an introductory class for non-music majors and she teaches it like she is teaching graduate students in music. She teaches the class with the assumption that most people have a high level of knowledge of music. When she asks the class questions and no one answers, she doesn't seem to get it. Terrible professor!
Lectures are boring, she treats you like an idiot if you don't immediately understand everything, has no clue that nobody is listening in class and is waiting for it to be over, content is very dry, her grading system is flat out ridiculous and she's condescending and awkward. Please do not take this class. Don't do that to yourself.
If you are not interested in analyzing film music, please avoid this class. It was extremely dry and boring, lectures were way too long and Pruiksma often gets carried away with the topic she talks about. Very, very boring. ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE. Quizzes are hard. A lot of readings. Tough graders on papers.
Good class and good teacher. If you participate and she gets to know you then you are set for the class.
Prof. Pruiksma is a very nice teacher and really wants her students to excel. Music excerpts in class break up the lecture. Ask her questions for clarification! She tells you exactly what to expect on quizzes and exams and lets you prepare essay outlines. She stays in touch to keep you on track. Not recommended if you have a limited attention span.
Took class for a discovery and lectures were so long and spent most of my time trying not to fall asleep in class. She assumes that everyone has extensive knowledge of music for a 400 level class. Lots of writing, journals every week for hw based on readings or movies you have to watch outside of class. Extremely hard/harsh on writing assignment.
She is the toughest grader and treats the class more like an honors English class than a music class. I took the class as a discovery and it ended up being my lowest grade this semester. If your topic sentence doesn't "go with the rest of your paragraph" no matter how good the rest of the paragraph is, you'll get a bad grade. DONT take this class.
My experience with Rose was in the Fall of 2015. I took the class (Music History) as my Art Discovery and had what felt like a standard college experience. I don't think she was as tough a grader as other reviewers have said - I simply put in a good effort on all the assignments and went to class and I passed with an A. It's not that hard, guys.
Rose is a wonderful human being. She makes the class interesting and so in depth. If you don't pay attention or read the material, you'll do extremely poorly on pop quizzes. There are only three tests for the semester, each based on two books. The only sucky part of the class is that it's at 8am and the chairs are comfy--sometimes, I dozed off.
Professor Rose is extremely passionate in her field. She loves the subject matter and has real mastery and understanding which is fantastic as a student. Her only problem is that her lectures can be boring. My friend didn't read the books and got an A but I read them and felt more prepared for class and her frequent extra credit questions.
Rose is a wonderful professor and is very understanding about turning in late assignments. The movies we watched for her class were all interesting and unique in their own aspects. Only two books were required for her class and they were both easily digestible readings. I would take a class with her again because she is really genuine and nice.
Very sweet, shy, kindhearted woman but not a very good professor. Her intentions are good, but her powerpoints have very little information on them. Class can definitely be very very boring. She informs you when pop quizzes will occur, which are always on required readings. No exam, but a final paper.
Really sweet woman, she's always willing to help her students and she wants them to pass. However, this was probably the most infuriating class. There was a lot of homework and she gave a lot of pop quizzes because she forgot to schedule them as regular quizzes. Also, it's really hard to hear her during lecture because she's so quiet.
A very nice and understanding woman, but lectures are pretty boring. She aims to do her best though.
Worst class I've ever taken. Should have been a writing intensive but wasn't. Lecture heavy and you have to do readings for quizzes. She takes forever to grade and return assignments. Hard class for an 8am- highly recommend not taking. Only counts as a world cultures credit- I should have just traveled abroad. ABORT!
Get ready for a ton of tiny assignments and lots of reading. Have to attend things outside of class that often cost $. Tough if you're not a music student.
Overall a nice professor and a relatively easy class to pass. My only annoyance was the rather difficult reading we had to do for the in-class quizzes considering this was a discovery class.
Rose gives too much reading and writing for a class that isn't writing intensive. The reading is a huge part of your grade, but she teaches the same stuff in class the next day. She doesn't this class in a good way for anyone. The non majors have too much new information, and the music majors have to relearn her way which isn't always right.
She was a fine teacher, was not a tough grader at all. The only thing was there was a ton of reading and every class there were questions you have to answer for credit (like someone said this should be a writing intensive class). Overall it wasn't bad all you had to do was show up and take basic notes and you would be fine.
She is a good professor and gives great feedback. A lot of homework and it all requires reading and viewing content to then answer a short quiz. Don't miss class because she does an in class assignment every single class and missing just one will bring your grade down.
Professor Rose is passionate and articulated. There was a lot of work, but she is an easy grader and takes very little off for late work. If you keep up with the readings, it's hard not to get an A. This course felt like a real time sucker at times, but was worth it because of how she presented the subject matter. I learned so much!
The worst professor at UNH by far. Yeah, she answers quickly but she will be extremely rude to you when she does. This is supposed to be an easy music class but she expects everyone to know every instrument in the world. This class is an extremely difficult class if you aren't in a music class. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. SAVE YOURSELF! ANYONE BUT HER
Thinks I'm a music major and should know everything. Very hard grader and quizzes started easy and got harder.
Professor Pruiksma gives tons of reading that is tough to keep up with, you go through 4 books during the class and gives way too many writing assignments for a class that's not writing intensive. Expects students to learn and understand the hundreds of terms she teaches and most aren't even music majors. She's nice but I would not recommend.
This class is horrible. She treats it like a major class when its a irrelevant elective. Way too much work and she's a horrible grader. If you need to fulfill your world culture elective TAKE ANTHRO. This lady is crazy thinking people actually want to put that much effort into an elective music class.
Literally EW. So much unnecessary reading for a music class that is meant for NON-MAJORS. Also she makes it so you can't skip because you have an in-class writing piece to do at the end of EVERY class. One of the worst profs ever.
I can think of many other places I would want to be as opposed to Rose's class. She finds the most boring things interesting. My major has ZERO to do with this type of curriculum. I am surprised that UNH still offers a class like this. I should have just taken dance.
Worst class I've ever taken, i'd give a zero if i could. spend more time watching terrible movies and taking quizzes for this class than I do for my major. Lectures put you to sleep, be ready to spend AT LEAST 3-4 hours per week on a discovery class. Just dreadful all around, do yourself a favor and find yourself a better fine arts filler class.
Hi, back again! Rose is so boring, and her singing is NOT it. This class is SOOOO boring. So much unnecessary reading for a discovery class made for NON-MAJORS. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! I REPEAT! DO. NOT. TAKE. THIS. CLASS.
Rose is one of the most caring, knowledgable, and thorough professors I've had. Music courses are typically very work heavy, the only way to learn to analyze music is w/ PRACTICE The ppl reviewing this class clearly were expecting an easy A, this shouldnt be at the fault of the teacher. She is v good at what she does and gives a fair amount of work
As an accounting major only taking this class to satisfy a discovery requirement, this class was a massive regret. I expected it to be pretty laid back and easy, but it was everything but. Professor graded assignments as if I was a 5th year music major working on my masters.
Nice and understanding teacher, I like her as a person. However, you can't miss class- it's 25% of your grade. The lectures are pretty boring. The homework is tedious and difficult to understand, and don't bother referring to in class notes because you learn about the homework the day after it's due.
Wayyyyy too much work for a discovery class. Attendance matters and she'll give you around two homework assignments a week with over 15 pages of reading required (that you will never need). She will call you out for having a phone or laptop out too.
I am really surprised by all the bad reviews I see on here. If you're willing to put in 30 mins to 1 hr a week, this class is a breeze. You don't need to know anything about music beforehand. You don't need to participate in class, just come to it because there are in-class writing assignments for attendance but they're really easy.
Easily the worst professor Ive ever had. Unapproachable, rude and not helpful. I asked her for help outside of class and she told me to look on the online lecture slides. Bad attitude, people were afraid to ask for help. Way too much work for a low level discovery class. Ive been to 2 schools and shes the absolute worst.
Absolutely rude and unhelpful. She makes herself available then makes you feel bad for asking for help. Do not take this class. Worst class and professor Ive ever had. I thought it would be interesting because I love music but she made it so painful and boring. Hated every second of it.
I've taken multiple classes with Rose & she's one of my favorite professors. If you're not genuinely interested in music & willing to do the work, don't take her class, but if you show up & pay attention then you'll get a lot out of it. She appreciates participation/effort & is always helpful. Really cares about her subject & her students.
DONT TAKE THIS FOR THE DISCOVERY REQUIREMENT!!!! Unless you're interested in music and already have a decent understanding I wouldn't take this class. I thought it would be interesting but it was just so confusing and challenging. She was also pretty rude when answering questions and definitely just favored the students who already knew the materia
no. just... no
She is a super kind and understanding person, who will help you if you reach out, but the class as a whole is not enjoyable. As an introductory course mainly taken for discovery credits, it makes you work for the grade. There is a ton of reading and a lot of work outside of the class and it's usually quite tedious.
I took this class for discovery credits. The class subject itself is so interesting, but its just so much work for a discovery class. There are reading quizzes due before every class. You also have to pay attention every class because she doesn't include everything on her slideshows. Dont take it unless youre a music major, otherwise its tough
she asks complex questions on the homework that sometimes sound like run on sentences for no reason. She really gets deep into the boring nature of music and its worst genres (her favorites). She uses a stupid website during classes for participation. She loves her slide presentations and sadly Im in class rn. Topic today? Musical activism:(
Literally one of the worst classes Ive ever taken. WAY too much work for a discovery course. Not to mention lectures are terribly dry and her lecture notes are terrible and dont give any information so dont plan on going back to look if needed. Overall really nice Professor, but not an interesting class.
She not it, do anything you can to change out of her class
Dont take this class for a music and art discovery. This would be a great class if youre actually interested in film and music but its not an easy get watch movies get an a type of class like it makes it seem.
Like everyone else has said, do not take this class unless you are genuinely interested in it. Her distaste for students who take this as a discovery is clear. She is rude, judgmental & critical of students when they ask questions. Cold calls students & has an unbelievably rude tone. I wish the university saw all these so someone would talk to her.
Im not sure what all the bad reviews are for. It is a discussion based class but I never spent more than an hour on it outside of class a week. She never made anyone talk if they didn't feel comfortable and she kept the curriculum flexible for what we wanted to focus on. 99% of assignments she gives 100s for if you just do them.v nice&understanding
At first, I was worried about this class because of all the bad reviews. I quickly realized she's one of the most knowledgeable, understanding, and approachable professors on campus, and these reviews are just textbook examples of how sexism against female professors is rampant. She is not boring or rude. Don't judge her based on this website.
She knows what she is teaching and wants her students to enjoy what theyre learning. I wish the class wasnt so lecture based. The HW is repetitive, which I dont like, but its easy to get done. The tests are difficult, so make sure to study. She is a tough grader and wont take full credit for an answer she doesnt like. She gives extra credit.
Why are there so many bad reviews for this professor and this discovery course? This is one of the easiest courses I have taken in my life. There is rarely homework and the coursework is easy to follow and straightforward. Very few quizzes/tests/projects, they are all online and you can use your notes. Professor is very nice and understanding.
Worst Professor I've had during my four years. Her power points have little info pertaining to the exams, take plenty of notes. The exams were online but hard. They require a ability to decipher music, and is vocab heavy. Homework is through Perrusell, she will judge your comments. If you are looking for a fun/easy discovery, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS
I would not take this class again and definitely not recommend it to anyone else. Prof Pruiskma has no leniency for missed work or absences even if you email her in advance. The lectures do not directly correlate with homework or projects and she is very unclear on expectations and the work schedule. Do NOT take this class.
Do not take this class it is terrible. She expects you to be able to identify all sorts of things in music like minor major, venacular, motif and instruments. Unless you really like music do not take this class
This was just an extremely boring class that could have been fun, but the lectures were so uninspiring and unimportant to your grade besides attendance, worth 25%. You are not required to do her homework assignments, but if you don't you won't understand anything she talks about in class. Not worth it if you can take literally anything else.
I LOVED this professor. She was so sweet and so enthusiastic and clearly so smart about the subject. The class wasn't necessarily super easy, but she gave students so many opportunities to learn and progress. The class itself was also very fun and interesting, even as a STEM major.
Really sweet women but this course is very hard if you don't have a good background in music. We had 3 exams, and they were harder than expected but she is willing to help and wants you to do good. JUst extremely hard to keep up unless you know music.
She is a nice woman, but I don't recommend taking it unless you're a music major. I took it as a discovery course and it was so bad. You have book readings to do due every class and you have to annotate, usually 8-15 annotations per assignment.
I really did enjoy this class, she is a very caring teacher who genuinely wants to help. If this is a discovery for you and you're not a music major whatsoever, this will not be an easy class for you at all. Go to her office hours and she will be great help. She offers lots of opportunity for extra credit as well!
While I liked it, if you don't have prior musical experience, DO NOT take this class! Rose is a decent lecturer and an great person (wish she had more office hours), but the lectures delve deep into musical terminology, which could easily confuse some. ~5-6 hours of reading annotations for homework each week, which feel repetitive after a while.
Prof. Pruiksma is a really nice, but her class was not for me. She gives an excessive amount of homework. About 5 parts of homework with between 3 and 7 pages of reading or videos each, all due before every class. I expected it to be heavier in culture but was mostly music terminology. Not worth as a discovery unless you're really into music.
Prof. was very caring, her class was mostly easy to pass, theres not that much work outside of class besides a partner take-home a midterm and final, and some homework assignments at the beginning of the semester. The lectures are kinda boring if you're not a music person, and I don't play music so most of the time i had no clue what was going on.
Easiest class I had for the semester. Didn't have to pay attention much or take notes. Her notes are VERY unorganized but she does post them. Class may be easier if you have knowledge or are interested in music theory. This class is definitely more music and less media! "Hardest" parts of this class were the midterm/final.
Overall I enjoyed Professor Pruiksma's class. The class consisted of mostly lectures. There are some in class quizzes and attendance is important. Having some background music knowledge definitely helped me in this class. I found the class interesting and think its a good option for fine and performing arts credit.
I took this class for a discovery and it was just okay. We did exit tickets at the end of every class which makes class hard to miss, but the lecture material isn't awful to sit through (just a little boring). She is very lenient about the midterm/final as they were both online and could be done with a partner. Overall, Rose is just an okay prof.
Class
Taking this for a discovery is a big mistake. The class is incredibly disorganized and not engaging, however attendance is 25% of the final grade. The midterm wasn't graded for a month and a half, and it's a week after finals and I don't have grades from March.
Professor Rose is so kind, caring and understanding. She is so passionate about music, but her main focus is the wellbeing of her students. She assigns a lot of readings/responses, but this is not a difficult course. She creates such a welcoming classroom community.
One of the sweetest professors I've had, super understanding and passionate. However, because she is so passionate about the material, I don't think she understands how intense the workload is, especially for a discovery course. It is discussion based, but she doesn't force you to participate. A lot of the work is in groups, which can be hard.
Professor Pruiksma's teaching style is discouraging. Learn to fall asleep with your eyes open because her lectures are a drag, and she often makes students feel uncomfortable if they don't know the answer, sometimes laughing or making faces. The workload is very heavy and hard to keep up. I do NOT recommend!
Lots of reading! Homework every class. Exit tickets for participation every class
Choose a different music professor
I really love Prof Pruiksma, but her lectures are quite boring to anyone with even a simple understanding of music as they drag on a lot. I found the class very easy and she's a wonderful person, but she takes awhile to grade. Please engage in her classes and contribute to the discussion. She'll appreciate it greatly (& so will everyone else)
I may have gotten the perfect grade, but this was by far the hardest and pointless class I have simply ever taken, and when i say hardest, i mean hardest to keep up with, not even my actual major classes have this much work
I thought she was very sweet and passionate about this subject; although her lectures weren't the most engaging, you can tell she tried to keep everyone interested. If you attend class and put effort into the mid term and final, you should be fine.
Lectures can be dull, but attending is key. Consider using Unstuckstudy and other study tools to stay on top of the material. The class is manageable if you engage with it.
She is very sweet and passionate about what she was teaching, but the lectures were just dull and didn't provide much substance. I struggled to maintain focus in class. She also had this clip-on microphone that would automatically shut off every 20 minutes that she never fixed for the entire semester, which was annoying. Not great but not terrible.
She is a good professor, however, her lectures are not the most engaging. Which sucks because the material she teaches could be so interesting! She used Menti often in class, though she did not really understand the tech very well. She's very nice, but the class is just kind of a bore. This class would be better as an online course, honestly.
