Overall good professor. Her lectures moved quite fast, but she was wonderful at explaining things if you paid attention. Quizzes are fair; mideterms/final difficult but are what is expected of the class. She is eager to help students. I highly recommend her.
She is a very nice lady outside of class/anything to do with her class or tests. She hates it when people complain about her tests, it's kind of her "her-way-or-the-highway." But other than that she really tries to make good lectures (which are helpful), homework help problems and reviews. Overall, a good teacher.
this class will be painful no matter who you have. dr loza seemed genuinely interested in teaching and made lectures about as fun as they could be (which isnt much). the curve sucked though, i worked really hard and got an 81 which only rounded to a B, which didnt seem like that much since midterm and final averages were Fs Ds and Cs
MIDTERMS AND FINALS ARE IMPOSSIBLE!! Just cut your losses and do well on quizzes homework and labs. Her lectures are fast and cover a lot so go to them. Better hope you get a good T.A.
If you want a good grade in chem 122, good luck it just a hard class. Loza goes very quickly in lecture and most of the material is not online. Her tests are very hard. Quizes are grades very strictly. If you dont show ALL your work you get points off, even if you get the question right. If done right labs help the grade but will take tons of time.
Loza is one of those profs that is still around, but noone knows why. Her lectures are unorganized and consist mostly of failed experiments. Her exams are unfair. The worst professor I have had so far at OSU.
She is very enthusiastic and goes over everything very quickly, it is best to read the book to fully understand what is going on. Her tests are the hardest and most frustrating thing I have yet to encounter at OSU. She also has a voice that can be very headache-inducing at early hours.
She's a tough teacher, but fair. Doing all of the practice problems isn't as important as understanding the concepts so you can apply them to new situations. Midterms have questions you've never seen before in your life where you have to apply the concepts to completely new types of problems. The final will make you cry.
I had her for spr-08 qtr, and ended up getting a D+ while trying. There is no way you can follow her. She is a psycho-erratic lecturer that flies, no online help, all handwritten notes. Zellmer is the best professor in all of the chem department since he gives you notes to follow as YOU LEARN...what a novel idea. Zellmer also provides online help.
I know my grade doesn't show it but this professor sucked. She flies around the lecture hall rambling about her days in the oil industry and what not. It has nothing to do with the class so move on lady! Also her final for sp.08 what the heck was that? She gave two cake walk exams then hit us with the hardest science test I'd ever seen.Absolute bull
Moves fast, you have to, HAVE to do a lot of practice problems to know what is going on. Her lectures are not interesting, but chemistry isn't. I think she's helpful, but her exams are not easy at all. But seriously, do the problems, practice, and you'll stand a chance.
Had her for chem 122 and 123 a bit crazy all over but shes good at explaining and go to her office hours she'll help you out a lot. Exams were fair and if you do the problems she assigns and go to lecture you should be fine.
Absolutely terrible. She goes crazy fast, covers one sheet of notes with the other sheet and neither can be read, and tests are ridiculous. While the midterms were hard, they were definitely doable. The final was NOT. Average was a 51%. I studied for a month for that exam and still failed. Worst professor EVER!! AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!!!!!!!
horrible, horrible professor, incomprehensible explanation, ignores students request such as posting the class notes (plus illegible handwriting), always comment on how stupid her chem 121 students are - personally I hate her doing this, it is not even funny, pretty useless office hours since all you do is discuss with other studets who are lost
I've had her 3 times, twice for 122 and now for 123. She's not awful. Most of the people who thinks shes horrible are just awful at chemistry. She teaches a tough class but does go through the notes very quickly. She is very open to helping students at office hours but does make mistakes sometimes that will make students confused. Take her.
Don't listen to the other comments. Loza is the best professor for Chem 121. Exams were not bad at all and quizzes were easy and predictable. Just keep up in the book reading and you will know what she is talking about with lecture. It takes work on your part...she's not going to do the learning for you
Extremely helpful, office was always open and willing to help you without making you feel dumb! fast paced, but straightforward.
She is helpful, her office is often open. In lecture she will move very fast, and her writing on the black board is illegible. Make sure you her practice tests, but after that make sure to keep studying. The real test is much different. Tests are very hard, be prepared.
She is a gem because she only teaches this class in the Fall. You must read your notes every day, read your book and do aleast the general homework problems because its the only way you will make it. I put in 2-3 hours a day and got an A- and was 15pts from an A. Warning there is no curve. Before the curve I was at a 88% and got bumped up a few pts
The final is near impossible after studying two weeks straight but it's curved so that doesn't matter. she's very helpful in office hours.. and i never went to lecture because i never understood her so i taught myself out of the book and did fine...it's a lot more work than 121 esp the labs
She was a horrible teacher, guaranteed at least a 10% curve, there was none. Her tests are ridiculous and not at all like her practice tests and I would study at least the week before each exam everyday.
She is a very good professor, but her class is way too hard. If you want a good grade then don't take her! Her exams are way harder than her practice exams, and the final was impossible.
Goes quickly in lecture but very helpful outside of class. She works hard to teach at the level of the majority of the class. I highly recommend her.
I had Dr. Loza for 121 and 123. I think she was pretty good. Her tests are very hard yet doable if you study. The final was crazy difficult...I think i ran out of time on my 123 final. But since the averages were so low the curve was really nice. If you study, do the homework problems, and go see her you should be fine in the class.
Wost teacher I have ever had! Seems nice like a nice person but dont let it fool you. She is an awful teacher. How do they allow such lecturers!? Makes many mistakes in lecture and has high demands of her students. If you can get someone else do it, AVOID HER CLASS!
The trick to Loza is- go to office hours & do the homework. Loza is a good professor & more importantly, a good person who actually knows students by name
Dr. Loza had a very tough class. She spoke way too fast and her tests had plenty of trick questions and were unfair. Her practice exams were so easy, but her real exams were so hard and tricky. This is a tough class and she wasn't the best teacher at all.
She moved way too fast. The average on the first midterm was a 63%, there was no curve. Avoid her if at all possible
Shes teaches a lot of material in a very short period of time. You must study all the time in order to to well in her class. The average grade for our first midterm was a 64%, and the material was fairly easy at face value. However, the questions on the quizzes and tests are so warped and twisted that if you didn't study, you will fail miserably.
Her tests are extremely long, 30 questions in 78 min. with all of them being math. If it takes you a little longer than 2 min. to do each question you will be dominated, our average is a 60%. Don't take her unless you are amazing at math.
Not an easy teacher at all. She is easy to understand in lecture and quizzes but her midterms and finals are full of screwballs. She also doesnt have much sympathy for students who just conceptually struggle
Dont listen to anyone who says she's easy. I failed Loza, next quarter I took Zellmer who is much more helpful and got a 94 after the curve. She makes mistakes in class and on exams a lot. All her test have problems that are tricks or that you've never seen before. She says do the problems in the book but she never uses them on tests. Take Zellmer
DO NOT TAKE LOZA UNLESS YOU HAVE TO. Everyone says she is so easy and nice when really she is hard to approach, and just not a good professor. I did well in the class but only because of the time i put in. Take Zellmer if you can. Loza tries to trick everyone, she made mistakes on both exams and on the snswer keys so we studied the wrong material
She says a lot in her lecture, but because she mentions BP, Inudstry, and references irrelevant things from 121, 123, upper level courses and the MCAT, most of it is worthless. Her handwriting is illegible. Her TA's are incompetent. Her final is impossible. She has no accountability for how terrible she is; EVERYTHING is "your fault".
Here is the thing about Dr. Loza. One person way back when decided to say she was a bad teacher and made terribly hard exams and everyone decided to hop on that bandwagon. She GIVES you the HW problems to work on. If you can do them all without a hitch before he exam, you will get an A. Those who don't do well in the class don't do the HW problems.
Dont take her class. I am a very smart person. I studied alot for this class and beat the average very well on the exams on top of being above average on all the labs and quizes. For all of the work I put in and even by regularly beating the average by 15 to 20 percent I still only got a B. Its not worth it. Take someone else.
ok so do not listen to the person beneath me, this class is like impossible to get an A in.. ok there is homework, but there is really no time to even do it considering the labs are ridiculous and unnecessary. Loza puts trick questions on exams. She is a decent teacher besides her exams. I got a C+ with a decent curve! Just stay about the average!
This class is so so so HARD! Her quizzes are tricky and her MIDTERMS are absoloutely nothing like the practice one's she gives. Avoid this professor if you want to keep a good GPA. She tricks you all the time!
Welcome to weed-out classes, dudes. If you don't go to class, read the book, and make a general effort, you'll probably fail. Chemistry isn't going to get easier anytime soon - take advantage of the resources you're provided (homework problems, office hours, etc) and you'll do just fine. Don't bet on the final to salvage your grade - it sucks.
Her class is impossible. She rushes through her notes and isn't clear on what she explains. Anything you do to study is useless. Her finals are mentally impossible. Best advice is to go to class and follow the book. You must be completely prepared. Good luck.
WORST TEACHER EVER, a complete whack job. Don't expect to learn anything from her. She doesn't use PowerPoint and talks really fast. Her hand writing is horrendous. She openly admits to not knowing the material. She is currently being reviewed because her tests do not reflect what she teaches. Class averages never higher than 60%. You be the judge.
She talks too fast and her hand writing is very illegible. She goes through a whole page of notes in lecture in about 30 seconds, which is ridiculous. Her actual exams are nothing like her practice exams.
Loza likes to think that Chemistry is so much fun that we should do it in our spare time. I would not advise taking her if you don't like to strain your eyes to see what she has written on the board (messy)or like to try to take notes she speaks literally a mile a minute!!!
She is ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE. Not sure why she has a job.She throws the exams at you they are full of tricks and not straightforward at all. Most of the important material we should know is passed over for things that pop up in 2 sentences in the book. Take her if you feel like ruining your GPA.
Horrible professor. Quizzes/tests impossible. MT aves 55%. Final ave 43%. Learned more from reading the book. However, she didn't test on material from the book, but rather on extraneous, irrelevant, tid-bits of info that she threw out during class. She talked too fast, her notes were illegible and it was impossible to follow her during lectures.
Careless teacher who didn't proofread her exam questions. I dropped after I saw how terrible she was at her job and enrolled in Zellmer the following quarter and snagged a B+ pretty easily. Avoid her like the plague if at all possible.
Don't take Loza. Even though she says she is willing to help every single person in the class, she is not willing to own up to her mistakes in order to help every single person in the class. She wrote questions on the midterms/quizzes that were wrong, and then would not give points back to the students who actually picked the right answers.
Everyone liked her but I did not. I thought her teaching style was really hard to follow and her handwriting is very scribbly. Really sweet lady but if possible take someone else.
Knows the stuff;;Details are important for her
Very nice lady, and excited about chemistry. Attending lecture is sort of helpful, but in order to do well in this class reading the book and doing practice problems is a must. She writes very hard midterms and final. Study alot and ask questions and you can pass with a decent grade.
Dr. Loza is a great professor// I didn't have much of a chemistry background, so her office hours were great, she's very approachable. DO THE HW (which isn't mandatory)-many of her Test & Quiz ?'s are straight from there...and those are often hard. Reading the Chapter before the lecture is good b/c she gears the lectures more towards the specifics
I hate everything about this woman and everything she stands for. The bell curve is obsolete and the class average was a 62... she thinks that is normal....
THE ABSOLUTE WORST TEACHER I HAVE EVER HAD IN MY ENTIRE LIFE OF EDUCATION! If you are registering for courses and have her, then drop it and run the other way...I would rather wait for another quarter to take a class taught by another prof. then take another class with her. She's useless in lectures and office hours and horrible exam/quiz writer.
I had this teacher for 161 and 162 which are the same as 121 and 122 but for chemistry and biochemistry majors. I have read through people's comments and they are negative, I managed to get an A in 161 which we had short answer tests, not just multiple choice. She likes to trick (challenge) you on midterms, but just think. She is a great teacher.
Loza is a good teacher and her tests weren't hard. The reason the average is so low is because most of the students are freshmen who think they don't have to do the HW because it's not graded. They think learning is sitting in a lecture taking notes and in general being spoon fed. Read the book, do the HW, and ask for help. You will do great.
Loza was the bomb. Sweetest lady ever. If you get the opportunity to take her I recommend it. She is extremely fair on midterms and quizzes. Final was really hard. Go to office hours. She is very helpful at office hours. She is by far the best teacher I've had at OSU. Not sure why her rating is so low. Take her!!
Dr. Loza is one of the more amazing individuals I have ever met. She's one of the most helpful and patient professors. Her office hours are the key to success, plus doing the homework. Her Mids and Final were rough, but fair. Just look for the hidden trick to use.
Chem 122 is a very difficult class. Attend every lecture and read the book. Her exams are hard and her final even harder.! In order to be successful, must spend time out of class working homework problems.
Worst teacher I've had at OSU!I took her Fall quarter of my freshman year. I went to her office hours and she told me if I couldn't handle simple nomenclature then I should transfer to another university. That's a pretty hateful thing to say to a freshman in their first quarter.Exams are hard and lectures are full of mistakes.Avoid her at all costs!
I had her for 121 and 122. She is tough, but you will learn the material. Even though she writes hard tests, doing the homework and going to office hours will allow for good performance on midterms and tests. If you're looking for the easy A don't take this class, but if you want to learn the material and retain information taker her.
I had Loza for 121 and 122. She is one of the toughest professors I ever had, but she is also the nicest. GO TO OFFICE HOURS and DO THE HW and you are going to be okay. She's entertaining during lecture, but she moves fast, so you have to keep up! Exams are almost evil but they come almost straight from the homework so don't just ignore them.
Anyone who complains about Loza is a pansy and needs to learn that college is tough! Loza although I hated this class at times because it has difficult exams...is still a great teacher. Go to office hours, study, attend lecture, study more. Loza is tough but if you are a science major or pre-med she will prepare you for success.
Not a bad professor, but her midterms were pretty tough. They were alright if you did the homework and understood it. Read the text, go to class. Also, her final was the single hardest test I've ever seen in my entire life. Avg. of final was around 49%. Prepare to be challenged.
SHE IS VERY HARD BUT IT'S WORTH IT!I had Dr. Loza for the 160 series which is the same as the 120 but only for chem and biochem majors. Her midterms and finals are TERRIBLE but she is a great lecturer. If you go to office hours and ask questions it's a lot of help. She is a very nice lady and will do her best to help you pass the class.
I see people on here saying she is terrible, but honestly she is not too bad. I find her helpful, she is nice on top of that and seems to enjoy talking to the students. She comes in labs, and is encouraging. Her tests and quizzes are challenging, but not impossible. I feel like she is preparing me well. Most the time she explains things clearly
I just finished Chem 161 today and I thought that Loza was a very good teacher. She will help you, but she is not just gonna spoon feed you. The Final is not as bad as people on here are saying. I got an 86.
Overall, I consider myself to be a good student (straight As in high school) and this was the hardest class I've ever taken. The tests, especially, were difficult. If you had AP Chemistry in high school, you'll be fine, but if you didn't, good luck! You'll need it.
Incredible teacher. Very clear and helpful. All questions from quizzes come from the homework. Midterms and Finals are difficult, but not impossible
Incredible teacher and extremely helpful. Made class fun and innovative. I got an A in the class. All the questions from the quizzes come from homework. Midterms and Final are hard but not impossible.
I think Dr. Loza was an excellent professor. She always came to class very well prepared for lecture and was almost always clear. She was also extremely helpful for students at office hours and always open for questions in lecture.
When she isn't complaining about the room or the other professor, she can be a good teacher. Watch out for her quizzes though, instead of quizzing over the main points of a chapter, she picks one thing and goes extremely in depth on it. She is very helpful in her office hours though
I absolutely love this teacher. She really broke everything down into terms we could understand. Her exams weren't super easy but I thought they were fair.I HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend her. Shes personable, funny and entertaining. There was a lot of content but I believe she covered and set us up for 123 very well.Go out of your way to take her!
Dr. Loza is extremely willing to help all her students and is understanding and compassionate if you're having issues. Her tests are difficult. I recommend doing ALL suggested problems, as most questions on the test resemble homework. She shows strategies, doesn't give away the answer and expects you to think for yourself. Fantastic educator.
Professor Loza is an amazing professor. Her exams are hard, and she does make you work, but she also makes you think in new ways. She is always so upbeat and happy and she really does try to make the students understand. Chemistry is a hard course at Ohio State, and you WILL need to read, and you WILL need to do homework problems- but Loza helps!
Great professor! Wish I could have her for all my chems. She was understanding and taught the subject clearly. Her homework problems are not mandatory, but they're very helpful and they appear a lot on the exams so keep up with them.
Dr.Loza is the greatest Gen Chem professor ever. She's so engaged in class and truly has an interest in the subject matter and in making sure you understand it. Her tests are HARD but doable if you study a lot. Work hard and enjoy having a teacher that cares!
There is no denying that the Gen Chem series at OSU is incredibly difficult and takes a lot of work, but it is nice to have a teacher who loves what she does and cares about her students. She makes an effort to talk to students before class and repeatedly tells students to come to office hours. She is animated in class. I suggest taking her.
She is intimidating, but the more time you spend with her, the more you will never want another professor. Her class is hard, but if you pay attention and do what she says (i.e. studying any info she gives you!). Go to her office hours! She's willing to help.
Professor Loza is the best professor I've had so far at OSU, especially for chemistry. Anyone who argues otherwise is honestly just whining because they couldn't handle general chemistry. Her tests can be hard, but if you pay attention in lecture and go to office hours, you'll find the class very manageable, perhaps even easy.
Dr. Loza is extremely helpful to the students that come to her office hours. GO! She incorporates the work she did in BP in the class. She lets the students blow things up. She is fun and passionate. I took Zellmer winter quarter and i believe that she explained it better. She goes through the notes quickly but she makes sure you understand it.
Dr Loza is an amazing teacher. The only disappointment with her is that I couldnt have her for chem 123. She is fun and made chemistry even more interesting. If you have half a brain you can get an A in the class.
Words cannot describe how worthless she was. Impossibly difficult midterm and final, worthless TA's. Worst class i have ever taken. Avoid at all costs.
Dr. Loza was brillant. She always went out her way to talk with students and build a personal relationship. Tests are difficult, but they're not a problem if your chemistry background is strong. TAKE LOZA. Tests will prepare you well for the future.
She may not be the easiest teacher, but she is very very helpful and truly cares about the students. I recommend her and am actually taking her next quarter!
Very clear and uses many examples in lecture. So friendly and eager to help. Class and exams are passable if the work is done.
Instructors like her make classes awesome. She is very enthusiastic about her subject and tries to spice chemistry up even more by connecting it with the real world. She makes an effort to talk walk around the room and talk to students before and after class. One of the best teachers I've had yet.
Her class can be somewhat difficult and I ended up with a C in the class, but even as she says, she also got a C in general chemistry. While her midterms and finals can be challenging, she is a very enthusiastic person who is more than willing to help you out if you ask for it. She's lots of fun and seems to love what she does. Highly recommended.
Dr. Loza is very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about what she teaches. She's very practical and understands the students' side of things better than any other professor I've had in college. The material is hard and she expects a lot out of students, but she keeps lectures interesting and understandable. Great professor
Dr. Loza is honestly the best professor i've had yet at osu. She genuinely cares about her students and it's obvious that she loves her job. Yes, her exams were difficult, but still fair. I find her class to be enjoyable and also worth going to. She gives plenty of examples, and is entertaining to listen to. I can't wait to have her again next qtr!
Very unhelpful and extremely unfair during finals. No equation sheet was given on the final, which wasn't told to the student until three days prior. This made the class very stressed, which she was unsympathetic towards. I would NOT recommend her to people interested.
Took Loza for the second time this year with this class. She goes out her way to talk to students. WARNING: she won't answer her email in a helpful manner. I had a question about a typo on the problem set and she didn't email back acknowledging it, causing the whole class to miss the question.
You can tell she loves chemistry, but tests were unnecessarily hard. When I went to ask for help during office hrs, she was incredibly rude & assumed I wanted "special treatment" while I was just trying to get recommendations on how to study better. I didn't like her as a teacher, but I didn't like her even more as a person. Would not recommend.
I didn't really like her very much. I did decently in her class (A-) and when I asked her a question about the curve of the class she told me that I always had the option of switching to a business major. She seems like a nice person but don't trust too much of what she says. Study everything and work consistently. I would recommend 2 hours a day.
Dr. Loza was very helpful during office hours. If you need extra help, please go! I did better in 163 than in 161/162 because I asked questions and got individualized lessons. She will go out of her way to help you and make you LEARN the material, not regurgitate. Take Loza if you can. Her tests are hard, but studying (LOTS) can net you an A to B+.
She is a wonderful professor but very difficult to follow. I recommend a tape recorder and hanging in office hours otherwise great difficulties for exam prep. Problem sets kill but she is always willing to help. She is always enthusiastic and can explain things brilliantly, though she does rush in lecture. Overall: better than other OSU chem profs.
Good teacher, not the best at explaining things sometimes, but she is very good to talk to and ask questions. She is a great woman and lots of fun!
very hard test, but a nice enthusiastic teacher.REALLY hard mid term and final.
Quiz average was 60 or lower due to the time limit. There was a curve and i was happy with my grade. A huge weakness of her is that she doesn't understand fully the level of understanding of her students.
She's nice enough and funny but it's a weed out class and she makes sure to weed people out. Her averages on the midterms have been in the 50%'s so far and she blames this on "holes in students' knowledge". Tested on things that were not on the homework/book/practice midterm. She was unnecessarily hard. Buy a book. It's your only hope.
She gives difficult exams. However this is typical for ANY osu chem class, so anyone who says any chem teacher has easy exams should probably be a chem teacher. She will tell you typical problems that are on the MCAT and other professional exams. Overall, she is difficult but in the end extremely beneficial for your future.
If you find out that she is the professor that you have SWITCH CLASSES. Her midterms so difficult, and cover a lot of material that isn't covered in lecture or in the textbook. She also like to complain to the class about things like the technology she uses in the class. 0/10. Would not recommend.
Very difficult. Will try to trick you on any question in the midterm, even if you know how to do a problem, you may still get it wrong. I found reading the book more helpful then lecture. Average on exams is always low.
Extremely hard test. Lowest averages in the 1220 section. Also seemed to complain a lot. Very knowledgeable on the topic.
If you must take Chem 1220, don't take her. Lowest averages on all exams (in the 50's) because of questions that weren't in hw, lecture, recitation, etc. She expects a lot out of people who don't even want a career in Chem. Buy a book. It's the only way you'll learn anything. If you have the option, take Dr. Fus. His averages were in the 70's.
Dr. Loza is very enthusiastic and loves teaching. BUT her lectures covered a lot of material not needed, and was actually more helpful to read the book. Exams were extremely difficult and go beyond the level of difficulty of the book. Avoid if you are not a natural at chemistry
Very passionate, can be rude during office hours, but it's worth the extra help. Biggest complaint: Exams were way too difficult, test questions often rewarded those who were naturally good at chemistry rather than those who studied. Finished with a 67 which ended up being a C after the curve.
She is very energetic. Willing to help. But this is a huge class so harder to cover everyone. Study need! Do her HK, not mandatory, they show up in tests and quizzes. She is a bit though. But a good teacher!
Acts like if you do the homework you'll be perfect on exams--not the case. I busted my ass for this class and the exams were full of trick questions; it's like she wants you to do poorly. Unless you go to literally EVERY office hour or read every diagram in the whole book, don't expect a good grade.
She is definitely someone who is willing to help but her course is really hard and the review sessions/study guides did not prepare you for the exams as well as they have for me in other classes. Overall i would say avoid her if possible, her exams are really tough. That being said, chemistry it not my strong suit. I did do better when i retook.
I love Dr. Loza. She really knows what she's talking about, and she cares about her students. The best thing to do is to go to office hours because she's very helpful. That said, she does expect A LOT from her students and will push you, but you will learn if you work hard and study. Midterms/exams are hard. It's difficult but possible to get an A.
Dr. Loza is very passionate, even a little bit crazy sometimes. I really like her class. You can really learn a lot. Her exam is not that bad. Take her class. It's an amazing experience.
Excessively difficult exams.
Worst class i've taken at OSU.. I knew a lot of the information coming in and understood her lectures, but the tests were near impossible at times and although i was fairly high up the average on every test I received a C+
Dr. Loza's tests are very hard. It is hard to get one on one instruction time because her office hours are very full. She doesn't seem to care about her students unless they are straight A students, which is a huge disappointment. Avoid her as an instructor, there are better ones out there.
A testament to high intelligence with poor organization. Lectures consist of mistakes, technological issues, and contradictions. Exams are disproportionately difficult to the subject matter and problems assigned. Disheartening experience for such a prestigious university.
Loza has a "mad scientist" way about her, she definitely knows her stuff but exams are impossible no matter how much you study. Office hours can be helpful, but be ready to be called out. Overall, I would try to schedule around her if possible!
Loza was a sweet lady and wasn't a bad professor but she can be scatterbrained when it comes to notes. Her exams are VERY hard, even if you study. Be prepared to do a lot of extra reading and practice problems outside of class. She does communicate well through email.
Dr. Loza is one of the worst teachers at OSU. she is a great person but she is not helpfull and in her office hours she is not focused and tends to jump around. Dr. Loza's exams are straight up death and I RECOMMEND NEVER TO TAKE A CLASS WITH HER.
Without much studying or effort i was able to get above average scores on all her midterms. The tests are hard, but I just used Dr.Fus' website for practice exams before each midterm, and that helped a lot. She's entertaining in lectures, but sometimes hard to follow. just show up to lecture and you'll be fine.
Exams were unnecessarily difficult and most questions had some sort of twist. Her was voice also extremely irritating; I learned mostly from the book. The average for the final in my class was a 52%. Avoid this professor.
worst professor ever. avoid this professor for your own sake.
Dr. Loza is an average teacher at best. She knows her material, but she makes mistakes during lecture and there are also mistakes on her tests. Her class is designed to be challenging for the kids that have taken AP Chemistry, and those that haven't, like me, are left lost throughout the semester. Office hours are packed. 4/10 rating
Lozano is not an easy professor. Her exams were very tricky. The midterms had a mid-60% average and final was a 52%. She is confusing in lecture as she can make mistakes but is very helpful in office hours or after lecture. The best thing to do well in her class is to read the book before lecture and do as many practice problems as you can.
hands down the worst teacher at OSU. WICKED WITCH OF OSU. AVOID AT ALL COSTS. SHE WILL MESS UP YOUR GPA. NEVER EVER TAKE THIS CLASS WITH LOZA. I WARNED YOU
Difficult prof, but if you have a passion for chemistry and are willing to work for it, you'll be fine. Going to office hours was pointless bc she was always busy with other students. However, I quickly found that reading the book helped significantly. I got a 5 on the AP test and thought this class would be easy. I got an A but had to work for it.
Dr. Loza loves chemistry and wants to help her students. GO TO OFFICE HOURS,IT HELPS A TON. With that being said, you do have to earn your grade in her class, there are no hand outs. If you like chemistry and are willing to put in the time, I suggest Dr. Loza.
Very unclear and disorganized with her teaching. She wasn't helpful and her tests were unnecessarily difficult. I like chemistry but general chemistry with her was disappointing.
I had Loza for 1210 in the fall and was pleasantly surprised that in 1620 she was a lot less frazzled and also less confusing. She is very enthusiastic and that is really apparent in her lectures. Going to office hours is very helpful, and her TAs are usually good as well. Written homework and exams were very fair.
Dr. Loza is absolutely the best teacher ever! She is a very energetic and enthusiastic teacher about chemistry, students and everything! Feel lucky to have her in my college life!
She is very confusing during the lecture. super fast explaining material. If you go to her office hour and facing a difficulty she will tell you welcome to college!! Her midterm extremely difficult for no reason. She gives too much online homework and she focus on the book problem so it does not make sense
Dr. Loza is enjoyable to listen to in lecture, but her exams make the class painful. They are difficult to the point of insanity. If a good grade is desired, then you NEED to go to office hours, practice every practice problem (including the extra ones), and study every night. All in all, she's a decent lecturer with overly difficult exams.
I took gen chem 1 before transferring and the curriculum was alot more rigorous, so going into the first exam i was expecting to do well. Didn't happen. Inconsistency in concept explanation, but Dr. Loza is extremely passionate, which i like. I just wish she took a little more time when typing in numbers for tests and lectures.
She is a good lecture instructor. However, the graded quizzes are more complicated and intense than other teachers and the tests are very difficult.
She was very tough
Gen Chem 1 was great with Loza. She is hard. But it is not impossible to get an A. You just have to put some work into it. Do all the Sapling homework, that's where you get a change to comprehend the content. Exams are straightforward but contain some tricky questions. Know your stuff and you'll do fine. Her practice midterms are great practice
Tests are ridiculously difficult. Hated my life all semester because of this class. Our final average was a 55%, and our midterms were never far from that. Makes dozens of mistakes every lecture and doesn't know how to use technology. She's a great person and really passionate about chem, but not the best teacher at all.
Loza gives good notes in lecture, but is so scatter brained it is sometimes hard keeping up or fully comprehending anything. Weekly quizzes and labs aren't too bad once you get the hang of them. Online homework is a pain, but it definitely helps. Exams are DEATH. All over things you talk about maybe once. Nothing like the practice tests she gives.
I did not like her as a profesor. Very tough to do well unless you go to lecture, do online homework and book homework, and take your own notes from the book. She tried to trip her students up on midterms and finals. Her average for the final exam was a 55 percent. Would recommend switching right away. confusing and unnecessarily difficult.
Class is no cakewalk, she is the most difficult chem 1210 professor. Avg on tests were in the mid-low 60's and final was in the 50's
Time to be real. Loza really does care about her students. You can always go to office hours and she is willing to slow downhelp you through it. Lecture notes give a summary, but you NEED to do book questionsread chapter to do good on tests, which are hard. Her goal is to separate menboys. She does. Its a really hard class. Generous curve tho!!!
Tests are very difficult, but Loza is a great person who blows things up in class. She always is available for help, but do the work or there is no sympathy for you.
Loza is very scatter-brained and all over the place in lecture. However, she's a nice lady who always offers help, and makes sure you know about her office hours. The tests are pretty damn hard and take lots of preparation, even after having AP Chem to prepare me for Gen Chem. That being said, the class has a massive curve
Dr. Loza is a very scatter brained professor. She came from industrial chemistry at BP Oil and is not very good at teaching. She has several mistakes on all of her quizzes, exams, and in class example problems, which makes her very difficult to follow. She also answers many questions about her lectures inadequately or with deflective statements.
Loza is a very sweet woman, but is the worst lecturer I have had so far. I did not learn much in her class at all. Her class averages for midterms were around 50% every time and she still didn't think it had anything to do with her teaching style. Her only form of help was to suggest doing more book problems. Avoid taking her class if possible.
If at all possible avoid this class! You will thank me later!!
If you take Loza's class you will constantly hear the words, "I got a C in Gen Chem." Loza's obsession with getting a C comes through when she gives nearly every student in her class a C. She blames her students if she deems the material easy (which is always) and is zero help in office hours. Take this class and you will most likely get a C!
All the information she lectures is relevant. She stresses concepts and if you know how to use them and understand how to start a problem. Her exams were horrifically hard, but fair in my opinion. Do not expect this class to be easy, you have to work to really understand and use the material. If you slack off, do not expect a good grade.
Loza - seems nice; Office Hours - dont go unless you have "a real question" - she told me mine was stupid and made me leave. TAs are the biggest help to you. TEST - HARDEST YOU EVER TAKE. She says she pulls examples from class but the buffer test questions are crazy. If you have to take 1220 - dont take Loza!!!
This is a very challenging course, but Dr. Loza really tries to help you succeed.
Dr. Loza taught very well but she couldn't make the exams more irrelevant. Homework is a must, the lectures are somewhat mandatory, and the textbook is almost useless.
Avoid at all costs. Lectures are long, uninteresting, and unhelpful. She lectures the whole time, hardly looks up to answer any questions, goes at her own pace, follows no structure, gives conflicting notes. Lectures are confusing; More effective skipping class to read book. Her exams match real closely her practice exams- make sure you get those
Terrible.
Willing to help students in office hours but office hours are packed so it's hard to actually get help. Her tests are very difficult and often have mistakes on them but she doesn't give credit for questions that have mistakes. Also makes many mistakes in lecture that cause confusion in addition to flying through notes way too quickly.
She really knows (most of) her material. She isn't a huge fan of teaching gen chem, especially 1200s, but she is still enthusiastic. She talks about her experience "in the field" quiet a lot, but you can use them as breaks during long lectures. Definitely a great professor, but won't recommend if you're not interested in chemistry. STUDY A LOT!
I studied nightly for her quizzes and while it worked sometimes, I always ended up failing her midterms and finals. I don't know if I just can't study or she's impossible, but I'm leaning towards the latter. Either way, save yourself the trouble and find another chem professor. You'll be thankful you did around midterm and finals.
She is so hard.
Dr. Loza will provide a class where you WILL have to work for an A. However, she is an excellent professor. Her job is not to give you an easy A; it is to educate, and she's good at it. She tells you from the get-go how to do well in her class (practice problems, office hrs) and she means it. Plus she's hilarious, if you have a good sense of humor.
I can't say Dr. Loza doesn't give students what they need to succeed. Almost every question on the exams comes from homework or an example done in lecture, and the questions are straightforward. She really is not out to get her students. She just wants to make sure they know their stuff. One issue: midterms are only 30 questions. Can't miss a l lot
She's an awesome person, and clearly loves chemistry. However, her exams are really tough: she mainly focuses on big picture stuff in lecture, and then some tiny detail for a question. She does cover all the material, but yikes. Study. Recommended homework problems are mandatory, and I only recommend her if you had a good AP Chem teacher.
Okay so im in Lozas class right now. I plan to take her again next semester for 1220. I do like her even tho I have gotten a D on each midterm so far. One piece of advice... make sure you have a great TA mine is awful and I learn nothing in recitation cause she does the problems wrong and I end up failing most quizzes :/ study hard
Loza is genuinely a nice person, knows her stuff, and is there to help you. However, her midterms are basically impossible. Since there's only 30 questions, you can only miss a few before it goes downhill. No matter how much you know the material, it won't be enough to save you from the out-of-nowhere material on the midterms. Pray for the curve!
Loza makes so many mistakes in her lectures and is scrambled most of the time. Exams are way harder than the material she teaches. Quizzes are conceptual and exams are mostly math based. Get ready to study for hours. Do not recommend her.
Loza is a very funny, good professor who is passionate about chemistry. In 1210 she does not like how easy the material is for her and she lets you know. She makes exams extremely difficult compared to homework, and quizzes and there will always be a few questions that are not fair. Exam material is not reflective on the difficulty of the course.
Dr. Loza is a very hard professor. She makes her exams extremely hard, way harder than any of the homework or quizzes throughout the semester. It is important to study a lot for these exams or you'll tank them. Don't expect an easy class from Loza. She expects you to know the material inside and out
Dr. Loza sometimes is a very confusing lecturer as she makes mistakes and doesn't always explain what is happening. Doing the work outside of class and reading the textbook will definitely let you succeed. Her midterms are challenging because each question encompasses multiple ideas but if they are taken step by step, options can be eliminated.
Dr. Loza is a very sweet lady, but not a great professor. Her lectures are extremely confusing because she is incredibly scatterbrained and makes several mistakes during practice problems and explaining concepts. The textbook is your best friend. Tests are nearly impossible. Drop her if you can if you aren't naturally good at chemistry.
Hard class, but good professor. Knows her stuff for sure. Tries to make class funny and entertaining. Makes tests harder than they need to be. She admits to making us try harder and pushing us more than the other professors do.
I found Dr. Loza's lectures very hard to follow as she tended to add unrelated side comments to herself right in the middle of the material, rarely had working/complete lecture demonstrations, and consistently explained concepts to the class that she then immediately dismissed with "but you won't need to learn this"; very difficult exams as well.
Tests were ridiculously difficult. Her lectures are full of distractions and she's all over the place when she teaches. Always talked about how she thought our textbook was unclear and not helpful so I'm not sure why we were using it.. Whenever you had a question she told you it was in the book or online. All her review sessions were unhelpful.
I only used her lectures as rough guidelines as to what i should pay attention to while reading the textbook - they are otherwise useless and confusing. She likes to include specific and minute details in her midterms that you are almost sure to miss unless you have a strong background in chemistry. Prepare for hours upon hours of study time!
She's a great person. But not a great professor. She often makes mistakes during lecture . She seems to want her students to do well. But she has quizzes in recitation every week and her tests are the hardest. Make sure to do her practice tests online!! You need to be able to do every problem.. And more. More math based than conceptual.
Dr. Loza is not an easy professor! She will make you work for your grades. However, if you are struggling, go to her office hours. Shes much more helpful with a small handful of students rather then the whole lecture hall.
Loza was easily the strangest person I ever met. I don't hate her but I don't like her either. She makes mistakes a lot in class and her voice is hard to handle but she is very knowledgable about the material and it wasn't that hard to understand. Definitely work the practice problems in the book. That's key to understanding most of the material.
Is of no use in class, and good look reading the book. Exam questions are on a whole new level, and do not represent material learned in class. Please get a different teacher.
Dr. Loza is probably the best gen chem professor. She is very fair and clear-cut on what is on the exams. She is an excellent teacher and provides good notes and examples in class. Her exams are very hard but there is a curve applied at the end, so your chance at an A is just as high as with any other professor
Dr. Loza is TOUGH and HARD! But that doesn't mean you can't succeed in her class. Her notes are clear, but she does make mistakes (...a lot); however, you must read the textbook and do bookwork problems to succeed on her quizzes and exams. She provides all the right tools to receive a good grade. She is willing to help whenever and always!
I think anyone writing a bad review about Dr. Loza is just bitter that they didn't get a good grade, if I'm being honest. She is very enthusiastic and passionate about teaching and gives everyone the tools they need to succeed, if you so choose to use them. I wouldn't necessarily call her tests easy, but they were very fair & doable if you study.
talks way too fast to write out the notes and flies through all her material. She is very passionate about what she teaches though. Gives lots of outside work that's mandatory if you're looking to succeed. Quizzes every recitation as opposed to other professors essentially giving free points in theirs.
Dr. Loza was a pretty awesome professor. She can be quite humorous sometimes. Compared to other OSU chemistry professors, she seemed to assign less work. But to get a good grade, you must do EVERYTHING she assigns, whether its for points or not. If you don't understand something, go talk to her. She is really engaging and willing to help.
Tests are very conceptual so just knowing the basic material won't be enough. She doesn't put certain tables on tests that other professors do and gives quizzes in recitation where other professors give points for participation. I went to ask a question in her office hours and she basically told me to figure it out myself. I had to retake the class
Tests are ridiculous. Every question is more difficult than it looks. If you know the material very well, but not perfectly, expect a C or D at best on midterms.
The recitation has quizzes every week. Loza is the only gen chem teacher to do this. For the other teachers the quizzes were just in class activities. The quizzes brought me down because they were every week and hard to prepare for with my other classes.
Dr. Loza was a really great professor for CHEM1210. Although her exams were tough, she gives you all the right tools and resources to succeed. If you go to her office hours she is extremely helpful and very encouraging. She really seems to care a lot about the success of her students and extends every ounce of her support to benefit them.
She really cares about her students, but is hard to follow most of the time. Puts heavy emphasis on math-type problems. Print the notes and follow along in lecture is your best bet. Expect too not do too great but large curve.
Honestly, I though Dr. Loza was a great professor. Yes, the class was not easy, but no GenCHEM class is. She was always very approachable and helpful, unlike a lot of other professors I've had at OSU. She really cares about the success of her students. If you are struggling go to her office hours, she is more than willing to help you.
She is very willing to help if you ask for it, but lectures are useless as she makes constants mistakes and spends more time complaining about the class and talking about her "experience in industry" than she does teaching.
One of the worst professors I have had. She is very distracted and misleading during the early morning lectures. Very hard to follow along, and her tests do not correspond to the types of questions we are exposed to in class. Recitation quizzes are not bad, but they do not help much for the exams.
Dr. Loza gives extremely hard exams. The averages are usually in the low 60s. HOWEVER she gives you all of the materials and support that you need to get above the average and hence get a pretty generous curve. Practice problems are essential and reading the textbook definitely helps. She wants you to succeed, but you do have to work for it.
Dr. Loza was an incredible teacher. Her class was super tough but she really helped me learn how to be a good student. Utilize every resource she gives you! It's hard work, but it is possible to get a good grade!
Awesome teacher. In lecture throughout the semester she will straight up tell you some questions she's putting on the exam. Really straightforward about it in general. If you don't skip lecture, you will have a very accurate picture of what her exam will be like. Only a matter of studying at that point
Just rambles on during lecture, hard to understand material as she moves through it. And then tells about all of her or her sons's accomplishments. Her practice tests are nothing like the actual test, so do not rely on those to study. Tests are multiple choice, so no credit is given for showing work. Curve at the end was the only good thing for her
Loza is the best professor I've had while in college, she is the hardest one I've taken too, but she cares. She wants you to do well, but you do need to put in the effort. She is not a pushover, she will grade you on everything. But she is the best professor I've ever had, I love her to death.
Dr. Loza is a friendly professor, but I did not enjoy her teaching style. Exams are all multiple choice and are made to trick you. Beware. She curves generously, though, and she emphasizes what is important to understand for future classes (organic chem, biochem, etc).
Never have I ever put so much work and time into a class and still unable to get above a D thanks to her stupid hard tests. The averages are always somewhere in the 60s, obviously something is wrong.
Although Dr. Loza is a nice person, I don't agree with her style of teaching. Exams are very difficult, most of the questions are trick questions. With not even 3 hours of lecture per week, a lot of learning that needs to be done is your own responsibility. A LOT of work for just a GE class.
Dr. Loza is the most lovable woman on the planet, but her section of Chem 1220 is tough. It's very possible to pass this class, but she'll make you work for it. She likes to to take a much less conceptual approach to chem than Dr. Clark, for example. Every single one of her midterms is much harder than the standardized chem final, so just beware.
Dr. Loza is a great person, but a horrible professor. She talks about studying for the entire class and I get that she wants to help, but that comes at the expense of barely teaching the material she already doesn't teach because she's so lackadaisical. The midterms are difficult and it's the only lecturer that actually has quizzes every week, yuck
Dr. Loza is an extremely well respected lecturer for many reason. If you take your own notes outside of class and do the book problems she asks you will be fine!!! Quiz problems are (quite literally) taken from the book questions she assigned. Exams are usually very similar to practice exams!! Doing well is dependent on how much you care.
Great professor, but you must be willing to put in the work or you will fall behind. She's understanding from whatever background or situation you're in but she refers to the solution as "life". Practice, practice, practice all the time.
Her class is very difficult, but it's supposed to be. It's not impossible though. Her tests are pretty hard, but you'll learn A LOT. She makes things very clear & easy to understand, and genuinely cares about helping her students do well and succeed. Keep up w/ the optional textbook problems & online homework to stay ahead & do well in the class.
She breaks down the information really well and has amazing office hours
As a person, I absolutely love Dr. Loza. She always comes to class bursting with energy and enthusiasm. However, her class is EXTREMELY difficult. If you are unwilling/unable to put in the amount of work that she expects out of you, you will not pass. The weekly recitation quizzes can quickly kill your grade and midterm averages are around a 60%.
Dr. Loza is an adorable yet psychotic old woman. Her tests are nearly impossible. The tests do not test the student on their knowledge of chemistry, they test on the student's ability to work around this lunatic of a woman's tricks. Be prepared to teach yourself outside of class. If possible, switch to a different professor just to avoid her tests!
While Dr. Loza may be one of the most difficult professors for 1210, I can attest that I learned a lot more than my friends did with other professors. She can get off topic in lecture, but if you come prepared (read, took notes, practice questions) her midterms should be moderately easy. Remember though, you're just Gen Chem, and she got a C in it!
Dr. Loza is very knowledgable about chemistry, however it is difficult for her to teach it to the students. Her midterms are extremely difficult and there are questions on them that she has never taught about. The average is usually around a 63%. However, you will be prepared for the final. There was no curve at the end of the year.
Avoid her at all cost, but if you do get stuck with her do make sure to do well in recitation, lab, and homework. But seriously save yourself. She is not worth the mental breakdown.
She was the worst professor I'e ever had. She's a good person but not a good professor. She taught so fast and acted as if the lecture was a review, like you already knew the information. I ended up watching Fuz's lectures online to understand the material. The midterms are very difficult and not much like the practice midterms. Would not recommend
She knows her stuff but is always WAY off topic during lecture. She falls behind and then cramps a ton of information in a short period of time. Exam averages are usually in the 60%-70% . Forsure the hardest professor you can get for 1210!
This class is completely doable as long as you are willing to work. If you need to use chemistry for your major/career, take this class as I don't think I've learned anything this well in awhile. However make sure to keep plenty of open time in your schedule for homework. If you're just trying to fill a GE and not ruin your GPA, maybe pick another.
Dr. Loza is one of the best professors I have had. Her midterms are difficult, but if you really take the time to do all of the HW problems she assigns and read each chapter then you will be fine. Also if you took AP chem in high school, this class will be a breeze. She does a great job telling you what to know for the tests. Lots of Math.
I had Dr. Loza and 8am and she made classes fairly enjoyable for getting up early! She really wants all her students to do well, and she tries really hard to make that happen. She does give pretty hard midterms, but it makes the ACS final feel like a breeze.
Reading the textbook ahead of class is pretty much a must. You will have weekly quizzes which other chem 1210 profs do not have. Her second lectures of the day are always better so I'd go for that one. Midterms are do-able if you take good notes. I definitely spent more time on this class than all my other classes combined, so just be prepared.
Loza is an amazing professor. Her teaching style requires a lot of textbook work; however, you always leave her class really understanding the material covered. I would absolutely take Loza again. In order to succeed in her class you must read the textbook.
Terrible. Absolutely terrible. She taught 2 + 2 but made sure that xyz was on the tests. Great teacher just terrible at preparing students for her tests. Do not take her for any of the chemistry courses.
By far the worst teacher I've ever had. Goes way too fast in lecture, notes are unclear and incomplete, and tests are very difficult. All practice is graded so there really isn't any room for error in this class. Avoid at all costs.
Dr Loza is a sweet lady who does her best to "care" about each of her students, BUT it doesn't matter in the end. She will still murder your self esteem with her riddle-style exam questions and almost impossible to get a perfect quizzes. Yes you can work hard(like every day) & do well in course, but you will question your intelligence all semester
Dr. Loza is SO smart. She REALLY cares. Do NOT take this class if your are lazy, don't want to work, want it to come easy, or are looking to fill a req. Take this class if you want to have a deep understanding, want to grow and learn as a new college student, want to take a professional exam (MCAT), etc. It WILL not come easy, but nothing good does
While it's clear that Professor Loza cares about her students and about chemistry, this is a very difficult class. Her lectures were sometimes helpful, sometimes very confusing. If you skip class you will not be able to pass even though she posts her notes online.
She makes so many errors during lectures that it confuses students. Constantly reminds people that she got a C in gen chem, but you could probably infer that from her poor lectures. She loves to ramble about unrelated topics and chemistry topics that WONT be on the exam. If you're not great at Chem, she won't help you succeed. Online HW helps.
This class is beyond difficult and all of our exam averages are in the low 60s when other 1220 professors have averages in the mid to high 70s so if you have a choice absolutely don't take this class it has been an absolute misery this semester.
Doctor Loza is the best professor I've had at Ohio State. He is caring and genuinely interested in your success. Her teaching is easy to follow and clear. She gives good examples and real life applications. While the class is tough, she tells you what work you need to do to get an A. Go to her office hours and do ALL the practice problems !
Dr. Loza was one of the best professors I have had at Ohio State and by far the best chemistry professor I've met. The class is tough but you probably already know that. She really cares about students and helping you succeed not only at chemistry but in college in general and I would highly recommend her.
Dr. Loza was one of the worst teachers I have ever had. She's very spastic in lecture and very difficult to follow. She would literally run around the room as students yelled at her how to fix the chemistry problem she had messed up. Sadly, I learned nothing from this teacher and other classes were curved down to bring up her poor class average.
Challenging professor, but wants students to succeed.
Her tests are extremely difficult but I did enjoy her class. She makes lectures fun and truly wants you to succeed but you must do the work.
Dr. Loza's lectures are decent but her exams are insanely difficult. You have weekly quizzes in recitation and she doesn't give out any extra credit. She curves at the end of the semester but I wouldn't count on it because it doesn't help that much. Would not take her class again.
Dr. Loza's class is challenging, but if you're there with a genuine interest in learning and not just earning a grade, you will not be disappointed. She will teach you how to learn and study better for any course. These are skills that are indispensable for any pre-med students like myself. My only regret is not getting to know her better!
In lectures, she goes off topic various times and usually runs out of time at the end of the lecture. Would not recommend this professor at all.
Dr. Loza is an excellant professor. Really really nice lady! Genuinely cares for her students and wants them all to learn. Not going to lie she goes super super fast during lecture and its hard to keep up. but Chemistry requires lots studying on your own time so if you do it, then you will pass.
Amazing professor! Knowledgeable and explains things in a way it's easy to understand. Only complaint is that there's so much homework that it's difficult to study in any other way. I work and have lots of medical treatment on top of school and spent nearly every 'free' moment working on chem homework (not sure if she decides the assignments thoug)
Dr. Loza's lectures are very interesting as she always looks to keep us entertained. There's no shortage of difficult material after the first midterm but visit her office hours and she will help you with anything you need.
Dr. Loza is so smart and is a great professor! People will complain because the class is hard, but it's just that chemistry is hard- you need to work for it, and she'll tell you that. She'll prepare you for upcoming chem courses well. She tells it like it is- no sugar coating, and if you can't take that, it would be best to take another professor.
Dr. Loza is a great professor! She is notoriously one of the more difficult gen chem professors, but she really does care about her students. There is a lot of homework, but her lectures are entertaining. Read the book before coming to lecture, and Loza will highlight and solidify important info in lecture.
She likes to say she cares about you, but she doesn't. Ton of hw, and the lectures don't really help. Theres a reason she has a reputation as a bad teacher. She goes through stuff really fast, and assumes that you have already taught it to yourself.
This was super hard class for me but I'm also not good at chem. You have to really be on top of your stuff and cannot let yourself get behind.
It's a difficult class, but Professor Loza really cares about her students. She is kind of an erratic/confusing lecturer, so I learned most of the material by reading the textbook and treated lecture as review/practice. Sometimes, she doesn't explain things fully, so I relied on my own notes a lot. Still, she's extremely kind and very funny.
Dr. Loza can be confusing during class but will clear up any questions you have during office hours. Textbook is a must for this course and you cannot do well without going to class.
Dr. Loza is kind of a mess. She often moves on to different topics before fully explaining one, mixes up pretty important terms so that if you weren't paying too close attention you would get pretty confused. Honestly learned nothing from lecture and just read the book every chapter and did the homework (which was helpful).
Go to office hours. Dr. Loza is very caring and will listen to you. She will do her best to help you, but you have to put in the time. Don't fool yourself. You should know if you know the material or not and if you don't STUDY. Do practice problems. Go over the notes. Explain topics to your friends. Study a little every night (not just do HW)
Dr. Loza was a great lecturer because she was funny and interesting, even though she seemed unorganized at times. She always cared when I asked her a question or emailed her and was an all around nice person. Im not saying this is an easy class because it definitely is not, be ready to read the textbook and do a lot of work to get a good grade.
What's a good quality in a teacher? I don't know maybe being able to teach and explain the concepts. Does Loza do this? No. Was she a good prof? No. Was she worth the money I pay to go to this school? No. Highly do NOT recommend her.
Loza was great, I recommend you go to every lecture. Personally, reading the textbook before class helped tremendously, to have a general idea of what she was talking about. Loza is a bit scatterbrained, so the last 5-10 minutes of lecture will be a rushed mess. She gives a lot of work to prepare her students for future classes.
IF YOU CAN TAKE THIS CLASS WITH ANYONE ELSE DO SO. She gives homework over things that you have not yet gone over in class and makes them due before you get the chance to go over it. She gives more homework than any other lecturer. Few examples given in class, pretty much have to read and teach yourself. Many people take this course twice.
Lectures arent useful.
doesn't teach; goes over homework problems in class... homework outside of class is ridiculously time consuming
Dr. Loza was my saving grace in Chemistry. She truly does care about her students and how they do in class and in life as a whole. If you put the time forward, you WILL succeed in this class. Go to her office hours. She personally gets to know you and helps you with everything. She pushes her students so she can watch them succeed. She's amazing!!!
Dr. Loza is pretty quirky and an interesting person, but she's not the best teacher. You can tell that she cares and she wants her students to succeed, but she doesn't really give you that much to work with.
At the time I took the class I thought professor Loza was just fun but just okay at teaching, however, no other teacher I have had has taught me as much as her. This class isn't that easy but she does a good job of preparing you.
This class was the hardest class Ive ever taken but Dr. Loza feels like one of only professors Ive ever had actually care about me. This being the first time I took Chem, I worked hard. The grade I got wasnt great, but I passed and I dont need to retake it. Shes funny and that keeps lectures interesting. Go to office hours and ask questions.
Loza is tough, no way around it. I would strongly recommend reading the book and taking notes before class, otherwise it is hard to follow her lectures. Her exams are very tough as well, mostly because they are really thorough and test on all the little details. However, if you stay diligent on your work, it is not impossible to do well.
Loza is definitely a sweet and caring person and you can tell she knows a lot, but honestly, I had no idea what was going on in lecture. It felt like she spent half the lecture telling us what we should be studying in our own time instead of actually teaching material. The textbook saved me
The biggest mistake of my entire college career was taking Dr. Loza's class freshman year. LITERALLY ANYONE ELSE is better for 1210. If you do get trapped with her, I suggest creating a drinking game each lecture out of her errors made on the board, and random tangents about her time in industry and own C in Gen Chem. Drink will be your own tears.
Hardest professor I have ever had. Unrealistic amount of work. Be ready to devote 24/7 to this class. However, she is really funny
Loza is one of the worst the chem department has to offer in terms of coherence and understandability. She's definitely smart, but she should stick to industry. She's the most erratic and incomprehensible lecturer I've seen, and her exams are hard. Study the book on your own, take someone else.
I would take her again if I had the choice. She may make mistakes in lecture, and there is a lot of homework outside of class, but working through those mistakes and the homework made me earn my grade. I believe that she does a great job of setting her students up for future success. Could easily make a drinking game out of the things she says.
Class average was 60% on every exam, enough said
She gave us tons of homeworks to do, and she talks so fast during the lecture, do not take her class.
There is no point to going to lecture because you won't get anything out of it. She jumps from topic to topic so quickly that she doesn't explain everything you need to know and I'm not sure she ever knows what she's talking about. Excessive amount of unhelpful homework. Weekly quizzes instead of recitation points. Highly do not recommend.
Loza is a funny professor but she does not cover the material well and easily gets sidetracked by bragging.. Be prepared to read the textbook for every single chapter. She is also the only 1210 prof at OSU that gives weekly quizzes in recitation, and these WILL hurt your grade. I like her as a person, but she is not the best professor.
Dr loza made chemistry a blast and was always super willing to help out in office hours. If you work hard for the grade you want it's a great class.
Lots of homework on Mastering Chem, but there are many mistakes on it. She attempted to explain these errors but ended up making it more complicated. Recommend only taking this class if your other classes do not require lots of work.
Loza was very easy to pay attention to, however she was not the best at explain concepts in detail that are needed on the exams.
Loza is funny, caring and truly wants her students to do well. Unfortunately, her lectures dont promote students success on common midterms. She often makes mistakes in lecture and gives a ridiculous amount of homeworkway more than other Chem 1210 professors. She also gives quizzes while other classes do activities and receive full credit.
If you dont have time to devoted your entire life to chemistry dont take it with her. The amount of homework she assigns is ridiculous.
I hated this class with my whole heart. Made my freshman year miserable. So much homework that was extremely overwhelming. There are weekly quizzes that are literally horrible. 0/10 class.. do not recommend to anyone.
I learned more about her life in the course than I did actual chemistry. She spends lectures wasting time however she can. I do not recommend taking her class.
I like Dr. Loza as a person, but her lectures are boring and hard to follow. Her quizzes are pretty fair if you do your homework, but she has no control over content on exams and doesn't really prepare us well for them. Loza's sections have the lowest exam averages. Thankfully, she is very accessible during office hours to help explain concepts.
GO TO OFFICE HOURS AND YOU WILL THRIVE
Dr. Loza did an exceptional job with the AMOUNT of raw material that needed to be covered within a single semester. Not only so, she also worked to energize the lecture-style class setting with her vibrant and kind personality. An issue with the course was the Common Exams, but those were NOT created by Dr. Loza. Excellent Professor and person.
Professor Loza is a very reachable and very passionate about teaching. O. Some points she didn't covered may show up on the test, but that's the fault of chemistry department. Chemistry and other science courses is hard and sometimes professor may make this even harder. But hang in there and find the solution by yourself. You'll get there.
Dr. Loza is a dynamic and engaging lecturer who sometimes gets off-topic, but covers all material and answers questions. She gives weekly quizzes, but they are fair and TAs review quiz content beforehand. She assigns lots of homework, but it helped me understand (do the homework!). She also hints at midterm questions during lecture (go to class!).
Energetic, lively, & knowledgeable but she often makes mistakes in calculation problems. She also consistently makes rude remarks to students who correct her. There will be a lot of homework & weekly quizzes. Study and learn material before each class. Focus and study main ideas but dont try memorize/know everything She teaches. Its too much
Overall a great teacher, just a lot of hw
The chem department doesn't have a lot of great gen chem profs, but Loza makes lectures fun and exciting. Her eccentric personality keeps you awake during class. The concepts can be hard, but Loza does a great job at simplifying them and I am happily taking Chem 1220 with her next semester. The exams are hard, but that's the department's fault!!
Amazing person, but a terrible teacher. You can work hard but it doesnt mean that the grade will reflect it. Labs were awfully hard, didnt relate to lecture, and got graded unfairly. Lecture isnt mandatory but top hat is graded in class so its best to go.
Honestly the hardest class I have taken at OSU so far. It definitely is a weed out class. But if you put in the time and effort the class needs, you will be successful. Dr. Loza is such a great and caring professor. She really gives you an insight on how hard the class can be. She got a C when she took genchem for the first time.
Dr. Loza does really want her students to do well. With the standardized tests she does give good hints about what will be on them so it's helpful to pay attention to that. But, especially in the beginning, her lectures can be very scattered, hard to follow, and confusing. She makes many mistakes in lecture. She's not the best or the worst.
I was SUPER nervous going into this course based on what I had heard about Dr. Loza, but it really wasn't bad. I put in a LOT of time doing her hw/practice exams to get the grade I wanted. Dr. Loza is a great person, and although she tends to mess up sometimes, she provides her students with a lot of resources to succeed and she really cares!
Overall, Dr. Loza's lecture's are not the most straightforward, but they are interesting to say the least. If you put in the time to read, do homework, ask questions, and practice for exams, you will be fine; however, it requires a lot of individual motivation and time management. She won't hold your hand, but she does really care for her students.
I absolutely loved having her! She jumps from topic to topic quickly in lecture but reading the textbook beforehand helps a lot. She cares about her students and wants everyone to succeed. One tip: GO TO OFFICE HOURS!! They are a godsend and helped me sooo much. Especially on the days of exams. Put the time in for homework or you will NOT succeed.
Dr. Loza truly cares about her students, and how they do in this class. This semester her classes had the highest averages on exams. While she is quite eccentric and can go off on tangents, she prepares you well for exams. I recommend reading the book to get a stronger understanding of what she teaches at lectures.
Shes one of the better gen chem professors. Take her over others. Slightly disorganized lectures, but you still learn in them.
A lot of students complain that she gives too much homework (Mastering), but if you don't do the homework and book problems, you won't do very well in the class. Go to office hours, she typically has a multiple, so she's very accessible. She tends to get off track in class and shares funny stories, but makes class interesting and fun!
Dr. Loza cares a lot about her students and it shows in the way she teaches. She offers lots of office hours and guides students to prep material so that they can be successful on exams. At times her lectures can be hard to follow, but if you are confused she is more than happy to help after lecture or in office hours. She made CHEM 1220 enjoyable.
I had loza for chem 1210 and 1220 and comparing to the profs my friends had, she is by far the best and I recommend her always. Gen chem is a hard course but loza explains what you need to do well in the class and even gives midterm hints during lecture (attend!) Shes energetic and cares about her students. And our class averages on exams were best
Gen chem 2 is a very difficult course no matter the professor. Loza cares unconditionally and will help at any hour of the day. She gets sidetracked easily and sometimes does not explain things the greatest, but that does not make me give her any less than 5 stars. Wonderful teacher and very knowledgeable.
Dr. Loza wants her students to succeed. She is extremely accessible through office hours and email and gives lots of opportunities to review material through recitation quizzes, Mastering Chemistry, and optional textbook problems. Exams are difficult since they are written by the OSU chem department but Loza's class always had the highest averages.
This class is crazy difficult. I'm a hard worker and do everything I can to do well, and getting a C made me happy, if that tells you anything. Loza genuinely cares and is honest with you about the Chem dept, which is really nice. Lots of homework, but probably my top choice for this horrible class. Live, love, Loza. Hate, despise, Chem dept.
A lot of people diss on Loza as the worst 1210 professor but I honestly thought she was perfectly fine and by far the best option for 1220. She does give more homework than other profs for 1210 but I found this to be beneficial to my understanding of the material. Not a fantastic lecturer but sufficient enough and helpful outside of class.
Not going to lie. This stuff wasn't even close to the easiness of chemistry in high school. Be prepared for going over notes, reading the textbook, doing homework, doing practice exam problems, and so on every single night if you want to pass with a B or higher. Loza likes to play the blame game if someone doesn't understand a concept in the class.
Tough class where teacher just rambles on during lectures and moves quickly but ALEKS helps to learn.
Just dont. The class and the homework were harder than other professors and it wasnt helpful. Dr. Loza seems like a nice person but she is very all over the place and confusing during lectures. It was online and new to her so I will give her that, but I have heard similar things from those who had her when it was in person.
Chem 1210 at OSU tbh is pretty miserable no matter who you have. Loza has everybody do ALEKS, which, although it is a ton of work, I think does help. If you want a positive, friendly, and decent professor for 1210, go for Loza.
Dr. Loza is great at teaching and you can tell she cares about her students. Her explanations are thorough and interesting and she will briefly review content from the previous lecture in each class. I found the class fairly easy with prior AP Chem knowledge and all open-note exams due to Covid.
Dr. Loza, for the challenges of online learning, did a decent job adapting. Her pre-recorded YouTube lectures really helped a lot as her Zoom lectures had some rambling. Tries to find new ways to help students understand the material. She really wants to see you succeed. Did an effective job teaching the course and connecting it to real life.
I took Dr. Loza in Autumn 2020, and she was an amazing professor. So good, that I am also taking her for Chem 1220. She is a caring professor and wants to see you succeed. I got a C on the first midterm of the course, went to office hours, and did the book problems, and got a 50/52 on my final. I couldnt have done it without Dr. Loza.
The tests and the material you learn dont correlate, nearly impossible. Loza blames the class for their low averages and does nothing to adjust to covid times.
She told us that we dont have to do one of the questions on a mastering assignment. However, she gave me 82/90 because I didnt do that question which she said we dont have to do. I sent email to her and asked nicely why she didnt give me credit on that one, and she said I shouldnt argue with her about this grade since I have a high score.
I took Dr. Lozas chem 1210 and 1220. I got a C and C+ in both. I studied and did almost all the homework and still didn't do as well as I hoped. I've heard other professors teach more to the exams; Loza does not. She constantly makes students feel bad about themselves for not getting As. I'd say try to take a different professor if you can.
Bragged about how her students normally have the lowest test grades. Blamed us for having issues with her teaching style and struggling in the class
