She's a bad teacher.
Worst professor ever. Engineering student who enjoys math and she makes me hate math. I dread the days when I have that lecture.
All the learning is done in discussion because her lectures are bad
The lectures are a bit confusing, but if you pay attention it makes sense for the most part... She uses alot of funny references, example: a math onion The discussion you must go to in order to have time to really ask questions.
Her lectures are unclear and not very helpful, discussion and Google will help with this class
Worst professor ever. Maybe one of the worst teachers I've had in my life. She just can't teach nor speak clearly. Doesn't even respond to emails.
Calc is tough no matter what. Okay by me, quite helpful.
Calc is tough, no matter. Okay by me, quite helpful.
Really boring lectures with no help... I learned all things by myself. The only advantage is that you can miss all the lectures.
boring and not very accommodating hard to understand notes and lectures
I went to lecture two times and both times I could not follow Guzman's notes or logic. After three weeks nearly half of the class stopped going to lecture because they were pointless. Just read the text book and ask your T.A. questions and you'll be fine.
Very boring teacher and she is hard to follow. Going to class doesn't help much but I always went because occasionally she'd give out test hints. Tests weren't bad because she reviews material in the lecture before the test.
Honestly, one of the worst classes I've ever taken. Her lectures feel long because her explanations are long winded and unclear, and she always uses words like right, so, and anyways. She makes jokes that no one laughs at, tells you to imagine a volume of revolution as a bread chip, and expect to self-study. The only thing that saves you is your TA
Prepare to work with ur TA
She is a good person! Though she's lecture does not so helpful for understanding calculus and hand-writing notes sometimes are kind of messy, you will find she is willing to help you if go to find her office hour! To my surprise, she remembered every question I asked....
Nice lady, however, as a teacher, she struggled with clarity and explanation. Often times she would place an already solved example on the projector only to take it off ten seconds later saying something akin to, "but you guys already get that, right?". Expect to do a lot on your own or with your TA because practice problems won't happen in lecture
This was without a doubt the worst professor I've ever had. She didn't teach anything on the tests, and really your only hope was attempting to read from the book and going over practice problems on WebAssign and the worksheets/quizzes from discussion. If you get her I wish you luck.
very hard to follow along with during lecture.
Be prepared to teach yourself everything
Really good prof, Dr. Guzman class moves fast, but she puts a bunch of stuff online. Go to lecture because she goes over examples. Tests not easy but straight forward. Questions are problems from textbook (answers in back), homework and lecture.
Seriously, during the lectures I have no idea why she is keeping saying things that I've already learnt in MATH 221. Moreover, I found that it hard for me to take notes in her class because she tried to put every single word she said on the board. By the way the board was never clear enough for me to take notes as well. Just one advice, DO NOT take
Don't take her class. She's not going to be helpful at all. One of her famous saying "Well, you should remember from your previous calc class/math 221." And my TA is bad, so I'm planning on learning the materials on my own.
Guzman mumbles her lectures and rarely makes eye contact as she speaks. Her lectures are unbearable, and she does a poor job teaching the material. Pray you have a good TA, because the discussion section for this class is important. If you could take this class with another teacher, I highly recommend it.
She mumbles in lectures, and rushes the material a bit. Overall a pretty average lecturer. Not as bad as people assume she is .
Calc 2 is the worst class ever, having a bad professor try and teach it to you is even worse.
I had her for Calc 1 and got stuck with her for Calc 2 again because of my schedule. Her teaching is very unclear and spends a lot of time on the derivation of things but not on real problems. She falls behind/ gets off schedule often because she's not very organized. She has no grasp of whether students are understanding the material or not.
She was boring, awful, and very confusing. I took Calc I and Calc II before taking it with her, so I skipped lectures after the first few ones because of how confusing she was. Do yourself a favor, just teach it yourself.
Worst lecture I have ever had the displeasure of sitting through. Class is very difficult to begin with but she makes it even harder.
To be 100% honest Professor Guzman was the worst teacher I've ever had. She only talks into the blackboard and is very difficult to follow.
This class was challenging to begin with and by having this "professor", it made it 10x worse. She does not know how to lecture one bit. She speaks into the blackboard and does not even ask the class if they have any questions. Be prepared to teach yourself the course and try to ask your TA if you have any questions. If you can, don't take her!
She's by far the worst teacher I have ever had. She teaches to the blackboard and goes so fast. She's not very loud and doesn't use the microphone system (it does work because the professor before her lecture would use it). She makes learning this already difficult material even harder. I realized I had her for math231 and immediately switched out.
If her job is to make you not like math, she passes woth flying colors. She constantly talks to the blackboard, goes way to fast in class, and always runs out of time before teaching topics needed for homework. Definitely just skip class and teach yourself.
Without a doubt the worst lecturer, possibly, in the United States. She is good at one thing: making her students absolutely hate calculus. She talks to the board, does not look up to see if we have questions, and is unprepared. She does not manage time and constantly goes late. Also, she does not know how to operate basic technology.
One of the worst I've ever had. Skipping classes and learning by yourself would be the wise thing to do. She makes things more difficult than they should be and she failed to explain herself clearly. She uploads her course note online so that you might have an idea of what she's trying to teach. If you're with Guzman, be prepared to teach yourself.
Professor attempts to cover too many topics at once. Since the professor is unorganized and not able to clearly explain concepts you must put in a lot of out of class time. Material itself is not difficult but prof specific test grading rubrics make it almost impossible to get an A. Even with previous calc experience TAKE A DIFFERENT PROFESSOR!!!!
My goodness that Midterm 2 was ridiculously difficult. Its enough that she doesn't do her job and teach, yet they still decide to make the midterm as algebra heavy and most room for error as possible. Its truly a Kafka-esque feeling being in her class.
No point of going to the lectures, you really don't learn anything. The only place I actually learn for this class is during the discussion sessions. Huge shout out to my amazing TA. The professor is just not a good teacher, it's pretty clear she understands the material but don't know how to teach them. Be prepare to do a lot learning by yourself.
The professor knows her stuff. The students do not. That remains the theme of this course throughout the entire semester. Don't bother showing up to lecture, she generally doesn't even teach the material correctly (think solids of revolution). Pray that your TA knows their stuff because if you plan on learning. Or even better, take MATH220 the A
The material taught in this class is challenging, and it was more difficult with a professor who does not know how to teach effectively. You will be better off skipping class and studying at home because the lecture is useless. You will find more help from your TAs during discussion sessions.
Neither her speaking nor writing on the board are comprehensible.
She is by the far the wort professor ive ever seen
While the information in lecture is very important, Professor Guzman is incredibly hard to follow and I ended up teaching myself this class through the book and online resources. I would highly recommend taking this course through another professor since she clearly does not care about teaching or if the students understand the material.
Got an solid A in math 220 but still cant understand clearly in her lecture. She knows the material but just cant teach effectively. The result is that I spend a lot of extra time outside class to follow the course content. An articulate professor really helps so take another if you can.
I took Prof. Guzman's Math 221 last semester and honestly stopped going to lecture after 2 weeks. The lectures don't have mandatory attendance and I went through the entire course learning stuff by myself and learning in discussion sections. This being said, I think Prof Guzman knows her stuff well however isn't a good teacher (in my experience).
Guzman is not bad at all, her lectures are a bit rushed, but what goes on in lecture is clear and explained well. Her class is only difficult because of the material being taught. The biggest flaw she has is not posting notes online, so you must attend lecture. She is a very easy person to ask questions about material.
Doesn't make any sense in lecture, unorganized and sloppy.
If you take her class don't bother even going to lectures. By far the worst teacher ive ever seen. All she does is mumble and talk to the chalkboard. Best way is to learn topics is through youtube. Pretty big curve at end of class.
I was frustrated with how Guzman would constantly take class into overtime, and I had another class to get to. And she would say something important for a quiz or homework problem in that overtime.
Goes through lecture way too fast, she'll be up there sweating and out of breath from writing too fast maybe thats a sign that she should slow down lol
Rosemary made me hate myself multiple times throughout the semester. The lectures, if you're new to calculus, might help, but I quit showing up after the first two weeks. They're useless. You'll learn anything important in your discussion section. Study thoroughly because the tests will be hard problems.
So Terrible
If you took AP Calc AB or BC (and did well) you'll probably be fine in her class. While she does rush through topics it is helpful to go to lecture if you want to see her explain theorems and do harder examples. Definitely not the best lecturer but she's also available for office hours and I heard shes more helpful one on one.
Rosemary Guzman might be and most likely is the worst professor at U of I. If you can, immediately look to switch to a different professor's lecture. Her lectures feel like a fever dream. She goes way too fast and overcomplicates straightforward topics. The class ends up being twice as hard and an uphill battle. Worst teacher ever.
Um, okay, so... if you skip lecture, ya'know, you wont pass, m'kay? The problem... the problem is... that lecture is, that is to say..., lecture is, infuriating, ya'know? Kay... so , in other words, she talks like this, kay? And takes 2 minutes... that is, 2 minutes... to say what could, in other words, mkay, be said in 1.
She goes fast in lectures, but she NEEDS to. It's calculus. If you're still confused or couldn't read the board, GO TO HER OFFICE HOURS. Her explanations may be lengthy but it's because she's good at what she does and cares about your understanding. If you ask for help, she'll give you that and so much more until you get it. She's a great person.
She does recite her lectures quickly which can be frustrating, but if you took calc in high school and review the notes you should do too bad. Always do your homework, and make sure you understand how to do it because it will help you on the exam. If you're struggling go to office hour, the TA's and Prof Guzman will always help you when you ask.
She was basically never there for us when we need her. She almost never answer our emails unless we cc the math department on it then she emails you back to put all the dirt on you. If you have to take 125, take it with someone else please .She is making this class so much harder than the material itself.
Messy long videos made it difficult to take notes and learn material, better off googling topics. I learned one concept in 5 mins from YouTube over her 40 min long confusing video. Doesnt communicate well with students, there was a discussion board with many questions on it by students and I didnt see her answer ONE.
******* professor that never replies to emails and she never teaches online but downloading other people's online lectures to ask us to watch.
very hard exam
Her homework and worksheet level is between 1-10 but her test's level is 10000 :)
The stuff we learn during the online lectures is nowhere near the same things that we have on the online homework and the test. There are insane numbers on her no calculator tests and I have absolutely no idea how she expects us to do the problems no calculator with these inverse trig functions and square roots.
RUN!!!!!!
231 no
Whats taught in class is nowhere near whats asked in the exams, the lectures are useless and its not even her, she just uses other professors lectures.
I would give 0 if I could. I really would. Not very good at teaching new concepts. Rushes through the lecture. Probably learn more when doing homework than in lectures.
The lectures do a terrible job of explaining the material and even if you think you have a good grasp on what you've learned by watching the lectures the exams will be incredibly different anyways. The lectures we have aren't even her, she uses another professor's lecture videos. She hardly even interacts with students either so just avoid her.
Horrible professor
Never teach anything.
lectures are cheeks ngl its not even her in the lectures tho so i guess i cant be mad at her bc she isnt involved in the class whatsoever but yeah every review below me is 100% accurate and im sure the ones following mine will also be Well the years start coming and they dont stop coming Fed to the rules and i hit the ground running didnt make sen
Nice professor!!! I think she is really good at teaching and few homework to do. Midterms are pretty easy if you study per hour a day. She also replies emails very fast. I think she is a good professor.
Homework is pretty much but it is easy so kind of waste time. Tests every two weeks and you need to prepare well for it. Lectures is fine but sometimes mistakes happened.
Imagine Billy from Billy and Mandy teaching the class. Got it? Now imagine Billy got hit in the head with a school bus.
I made this account specifically for this. There is not a single positive thing to be said. Doesn't answer emails, lecture videos are incomplete and not her own. Teaching from Chicago. Annoyed when I do reach out. Test material not at all what was covered in class. I'm being deprived of an education. This is the worst teacher I've had in my life.
I think I could be the prof of this course too. You just need to use other professors' video as lectures, give TAs the worksheets years ago and let them answer all questions then throw some exams and get students average 50/100. Btw, the exam is far from what is taught in class
Every bad review here is accurate. If you're required to take one of her classes, I recommend professor Leonard on YouTube. He's hard carrying me through the class right now. Watch the Guzman lectures, but be careful of the many typos (lectures aren't even her). Read the textbook after the lectures and definitely do the hw. Worst professor ever.
None of the words above fit the description of this professor. Why? I'm not even sure what she's like. Ive never once heard her voice or had a reply to an email. She doesn' record her own lectures, the one in the lectures sounds like they don't understand calculus. I applied credit/nocredit bc after a month of this class i new my grade sucked.
Extremely poor explanation skills. lots of HW and mid terms are very hard. If not the curve more than 75 % of the class would have failed
worst professor I've ever had; legit never seen, heard, or interacted with her. Doesn't record her lectures, doesn't teach, doesn't answer emails, doesn't even go to her office hours. Unless you're a great self study person, if you see her name turn the other direction.
Terrible professor, cost me a lot of money of buying useless online textbook. My discussion group members even told me that they learn more from me than the professor. By the way, the lecture video isn't hers.
This is by far the worst class I ever taken. The exams were every 2 weeks, which was absolutely horrendous. By the time you finished one, you were already stressed about the other. The lectures were prerecorded, horrible, had multiple mistakes. Just stay away from this professor, unless you can learn all the material on your own.
Shes an awful teacher. Never take one of her classes.
You have to be good at self studying to do well in this class. Lectures are so disorganized and all over the place and the professor is impossible to follow. I very quickly learned I wasnt learning anything from lecture and had to find other ways to study. Only teacher Ive ever had whos lecture is completely unlistenable.
not recommended
Worst professor ever! Working hard does not pay off in her class.
Lectures are useless, you learn more from the help videos on the Webassign homework
The professor seems like a kind person, but that's about it. The pacing of the lectures are not great and you will learn more from the pre-recorded lectures. The organization of the class is awful; materials and homework are scattered among various sites and have different formats. Exams barely test you on the course material and are frequent.
If I could give a 0 I would. There is no way this woman knows any kind of math. She doesnt explain anything and exams are on cbtf. Grading is done awfully. Take Guzmans class only if you hate yourself. Easily the worst teacher I have ever seen so far.
Terrible professor. Is apparently unaware that her lecture hall was full at the beginning of the semester and now only ~10 people go. She teaches one thing, something else appears on the worksheets. Tests are frequent and impossible to do well on if you don't teach yourself. Only choose her if you like to torture yourself.
Welcome to YouTuBe University
Did not learn much in Guzman's class
Insanely hard tests and doesn't know to teach during lecture. Definitely learned more from the Organic Chemistry Tutor on youtube than I did from her. After a 5% curve, the average on a test was a 56. No partial credit on tests or extra credit assignments, even though every student desperately needs them.
The worst class I've taken so far. The only way to get a good grade in this class is curve that's applied to all the exams and final grade, otherwise a large majority of the class would fail. After curves, her exam averages range between 50-70, if that says anything. All the exams are way more difficult than the practice, with no partial credit.
Worst maths teacher in my life. Extremely disorganized. Tough exam format. My TA saved me.
No, just no.
Nice person but definitely has no place teaching Calc 2. It seems like she does everything in her power to make sure we fail. Useless lectures, poor organization, and exams that are unfairly difficult with no partial credit.
don't expect on lectures, learn it yourself if you're in her section.
Terrible at lecturing, you're going to have to teach yourself the entire class. The exams are very difficult and the averages are always low. If you get stuck with her, good luck.
To be completely honest, I should have trusted the reviews on here more. I had her for MATH 221 and I had taken AP Calc AB and BC with 3s like most people in this class. She is extremely hard to follow, and I honestly feel you are better off not going to lecture and just doing khan academy and learning in discussion period.
She's a very nice person, but her lectures are incredibly unorganized and hard to follow. I had to basically self-teach on youtube and learn during my discussion period. The tests were also really hard and the practices weren't always reflective of what would be on there. Just a super hard class with a really hard professor tbh.
I don't know a single person who went to lecture... Professor Leonard on Youtube was more helpful. She's a really nice person but her lectures were unorganized. Discussion section was fine. The tests were very hard for being taken on computer with a time constraint and without partial credit. TAs carried. Test averages were around 60 (with curve).
Learned nothing in this class. Tests were not well put together, and way harder and unlike things, we did in discussion and on WebAssign. She is passive-aggressive in emails and doesn't even record her own lecture videos, which were often unhelpful, unorganized, and sometimes just cut out in the middle of problems. Avoid her like the plague.
No doubt her class is extremely hard. But with patient and efforts, you will get more than just A but a wonderful learning experience. Professor Guzman is friendly and approachable. You could always get feedback and ask help from her. Her class is some sort of unorganized and hard to understand so please learn ahead of class.
Her class was the most frustrating and unorganized course I've ever taken. Her recorded lectures were from a different professor that skipped over important theorems/rules. HW was difficult and exams felt virtually impossible. The average for each exam wax extremely low. Unless you've taken Calc BC, I highly don't recommend her class.
Bad. Really bad.
Taught me so much about math and myself! Courses are hard but rewarding. Very kind and helpful if you take time to ask.
I learned a lot! Very kind! I feel that most people did not take the tine to appreciate her class. Please take into consideration that in order to learn anything from a class you can't have a teacher who is not teaching you. This teacher does a great job in delivering the concept and if you are nice
Good learned lot very helpful
Good class. Learned a lot, just make sure to try to work hard and follow along.
Hard class but learned a lot. Taught very well.
