Interesting lectures. A bit full of herself and unappoachable, though.

horrible teaching style, treats you as if you belong in elementary school, mean
very enthusiastic
made me doubt her ability to teach micb courses. unclear explanation
She's generally OK, but she tries to make bio way harder than it should be.
BAHHHH!!! I am so glad the year is over. What a horrible prof.
she was one of the crappiest prof i've ever had in 1st yr. PLZ AVOID HER FOR UR OWN SAKE. She can't put her thoughts into words.
She makes biology interesting but the exams very unapproachable. When more than half the science1 class fails the exam, there has to be something worng. If it's not us, it must be her.
horrible - class avg 56 for mt , went up to 59 doesnt matter coz i WAS the avg, should have spent some time teaching us how to take all MC exams, or maybe i was just dumb
Makes Biology interesting, but is lacking in clarity.
A challenging Biology professor but gives good guidance when you have problems. Great person if you approach her outside of class; she's a busy person with all of her research, but she'll try her best to help you out.
In my opinion, Rosie is an interesting person, but her lectures, notes (and even the exams) are not helpful. You really have to study the textbook at home to get anything useful from this course.
rosie is approachable with questions, but lecture material wont be on exams. neither will most textbook stuff. lectures are generally irrelevant and unhelpful, and exam questions are often pointless.
rosie is a really enthusiastic prof. she tries really hard to make her lectures and assignments interstesting and engaging nad be creative- which sometimes backfires. v helpful with extra help- ASK QUESTIONS! (outside class) threatened by tall guys
Rosie is no ordinary prof. You will realize that in the first lecture when she brags (even prints out a goddamn overhead) about the fact that she did her post doc in stanford. Electron theatre? WTF? also wears controversial T-shirts that bashes
I hope this will bring Rosie's average score up to a smiley face. One of the most precious things I got out of Science One was Rosie teaching me (out of class) how to explain concepts clearly in words. I think she definitely makes Science One shine!
Rosie was excellent when she helped me with problem solving or experimental design. However, lectures (and textbook) are often unrelated to exams and she tends voice her opinions too much when it comes to unrelated matters (such as religion).
rosie's so awesome. i love that she voices her opinions and she's so full of energy and pep. she seems really passionate about what she does, too, and teaches things effectively - her anecdotes and quirks are the best. usually if she tells you off, you deserved it!
The best part of science one for me. Her exams are easy if you focus on understanding rather than detail.
Rosie made biology seem easy. Her focus was always on understanding rather than memorization, so it seems like her exams are unrelated, but they always focus on the concepts we learned. All exams were open book- but I rarely opened my books during exams.
Don't take her class if your not a science student, and dont have a scientific mind. You can't get through by memorizing. Exams make you apply what you learned to new situtions. Aviod her unless your a biology genius. O and watch what you say cause she goes on rate my professor.
Is a good prof. she checks the disscussion boards everyday to answer questions put forth by students. she gives time in class to ask questions. She really trys to make sure you understand the material and dont just memorize it. If your not good at science i wouldn't reccomend the course.
It's true she emphasizes understanding over memorization. You can come to class with no paper or pens. There's so little substance in the notes you can't write anything anyway. Yes, she's helpful on the msg boards, but if you're like me, there's no time to sift through 120 msgs to find an answer to your question, unless you're a forum junkie...
You can succeed in class by a.) getting a bunch of friends to study together and work on problems because she doesn't post answers up b.) sit relatively close cause she didnt use a mic. This course totally emphasizes understanding. An open book test doesnt mean you get to slack (be warned).
She is a terrible prof. She is not clear and refuses to help students. She does not have office hours on the week of the midterm. If you are lost and confused, she refers you to the textbook instead of taking 30 seconds to explain. Take this course if you are a biology pro. If you are not transfer immediately.
she speaks so softly and she refuses to use a mic. she refuses to help. she has zero notes. transfer to another bio 121 class. people keep saying how bio 121 is easy and fun but this prof just makes it unenjoyable
While I must say that she is very intelligent and teaches clearly, the exams are quite difficult: Class ave 55. This class should be scaled.
She isn't clear; there's no posting of answers and midterm averages were very low. She takes marks off for the slightest grammatical errors...I think she made a potentially interesting class into a bad one. I seriously dont recommend her. =(
okay prof, hard midterm..average 55...will not give u answers for the midterm practice qz. not very helpful. sit in front row if you want to hear her. take another prof if you can for an easier midterm.
Terrible prof. Boring class. Hard midterm. Cannot hear her, absolutely terrible when it comes to answering questions and giving useful notes. Her apparantly "focus on understanding" really means "will put random and irrelevant things on exams"
Very stubborn professor who thinks she is always right. She doesn't post answers to the midterm or the online quizzes. Her lectures are completely irrelevant to anything. The only reasons one might attend her class is for the PRS questions. But on the plus side I did watch a low quality video about trapping some stupid rabbit (instead of learning bio)
dr redfield is definitely not the nicest prof, but shes a good instructor. i'm in 2nd yr, and because of a program switch i've probably taken more 1st yr science courses than most people, and of all my profs thus far, she's one of the best. not the nicest by any means, but that's because she refuses to treat you like you're still in high school.
This professor didn't seem to be very prepared for class and often had her prs questions wrong (on top of the ambiguous questions). She also tends to ignore questions and leaves it for students to post on forums. The 'answers' she gives are often not an answer. Simply not an effective teacher.
Prolly the worst prof/teacher i've ever had. She is stubborn. Midterm has vague questions, looking for specific answers, which is completely unfair. Lectures are case studies, and often not about the biology, but rather the procedures and backround of an experiment. Its a lil' difficult to explain. she is tricky and not helpful. I would avoid her.
It's pretty hard to answer questions properly when half the questions are ambiguous, and the other half are random. When she is notified of the ambiguous problems, she will likely give you a "tough luck, just move on". Practice midterms with no answers is not a good preparation tool for students. Do yourself a favour and avoid her at all costs.
she impatient and disorganize. She always tell students to post on webct and not clearify in class.
Teaching materials that are out of topics. Midterm and final are extremely hard.
She's not a hard prof but she's a bad prof. Yes, she does focus on concepts, but often I left class feeling as though I'd learned nothing. She is rude, and does nothing to help you better your understanding. She won't answer questions and when she does she uses sarcasm. Granted she is teaching a first year class but that does not merit arrogance.
I cant find it in me to say anyting positive about Dr. redfield. I am an Arts student and decided to take this course as i enjoyed biology in high school. Not only is she unaccomidating, this class is nearly impossible as an Arts student who is not looking to move on to medical school. Her final was the hardest exam ive ever written. Be warned.
Although i got a relatively good mark in this class, I found the prof to be unhelpful. She is rude and insensitive towards students, doesn't answer questions (attitude even discourages questions), very sarcastic, speaks quitely and refuses to use a microphone, lectures are boring and irrelevant...go with another prof if u r interested in bio 121.
I don't know what's up with these reviews. Dr.Redfield is an amazing prof. I get bored easily but I found her lectures to be so interesting. If u rely on straigt memorization to feel confident going into an exam, then this isn't the prof u. u have to actually understand whats going (which isnt very hard at all).i hope she teaches other bio courses
if i were to say things i want to say about her, people would be offended beyond reason. exams are hard, notes are either non-existant or not helpful, lectures are irrelevant and disorganized. The marking scheme for exams is "all or nothing." avoid at all costs.
Horrible useless teacher but I still did well in this class (after scaling- from 67 to 84). Get over the average (which was around 50) and you'll be fine. I was an arts student who hated bio in high school and still did better than science students in the class because they were more used to straight memorization (especially first years).
The only reason why there are so many negative comments on this page is because many of the ratings are written by students who did poorly. While Dr Redfield's exams are quite difficult, and stresses understanding over memorization, they are scaled massively at the end, so its all fair.
Her class was interesting but she's not helpful at all when you ask her questions. Her midterm was decent although keep in mind the class average was only 55%. Her final exam had absolutely "NOTHING" to do with her notes, practice exams, or the textbook. Studying or not wouldn't make a difference unless u have a strong bio bgr from b4. Stay away!
Her lectures were interesting. I think I learnt more from her class than I need to. :p I agree w/ others that she isn't responsive to students' problems...don't even give clarifications! She uses a different approach in teaching...try her if you want to try something new.
GREAT prof - she's really brilliant, and it shows. Unfortunately, her exams are designed to make you do as poorly as possible. On top of that, many many lectures are spent on material that won't show up on the tests. If you want a challenge, this is the prof for you =D
She is absolutely the worst prof I've ever had! I studied everything - the text, lecture notes and all handouts she gave us- and I still failed miserably! My mark wasn't even scaled! I tried asking her questions and she discourages us asking her questions, which is unheard of for a 1st year course! I'm not taking another bio course ever!
Yes, her exams are hard, but they are scaled, so the marks end up being fair. Interesting lectures, emphasizes understanding; you can read the textbook at home anyways, so from her lectures you can usually get a pretty good idea of what she expects via PRS and comments she makes. But overall, not approachable and considerate of students.

Even though I did well in this course, I felt Dr. Redfield's teaching was designed to help students. Though she obviously has a great interest in biology and is very knowledgable, the way that she handled students' questions was not helpful. Her lecture notes often did not seem to fit the course and most people had no idea what to study for exams.
VERY smart woman. Enjoyed her lectures alot cuz she's not just regurgitating the text (text is a fairly easy read). Really emphasizes on understanding, there4 first yrs tend to get LOW marks cuz they're not used to this kinda 'university learning'. no answers given, but very responsive on webct. hard final but i still admire her for her spunkiness.
WORST EXPERIENCE IN UBC EVER!! TRANSFER OUT ASAP! i love bio and genetics and evolution but she ruined the whole subject. NOTES DONT HELP. plays stupid music videos in class rather than answering questions. if you ask for help she tells you to figure it out on your own. even though exams are open book, a lot of people did POORLY.
she actually gives really good lectures; however, her lectures will never cover the contents in the exam. I learned well of this course but I got a miserable score.
it's like she's a first time teacher with no lesson plan at all who's trying to learn the material as she's teaching it and not doing a very good job of it at that.
not very helpful, avoid her class at all costs!!!!!!!
Worst prof I have ever had. PRS questions are ridiculously hard. Lectures have NOTHING to do with the readings. She goes on and on about what ppl have researched on and statistics about diseases, that she doesn't teach the class so you have no idea what to study for the midterm.
i saw her rating here and wanted to drop this class but it was a good time slot so i sticked with it. now i realized i shud've definitely dropped it. possibly the worst prof i've had so far. very biased, insulted college professors, insulted students, yelled at a student and called them stupid when the student asked to have his midterm remarked,
worst prof EVER!!!!!!!! dont ever take her class because: (1) hard tests, lectures and textbooks doesnt help at all (2) mean personality, she is so rude and makes u look like a fool (3) super UNhelpful, dont ask her anything coz u wil never get an answer (not kidding!!!)
terrible. i learned three things in redfields class: 1)she studied at stanford 2)she didn't really want to be teaching and 3)...she studied at stanford. lectures were painful, midterm was impossible and based on luck which i don't have... i've never had such a bad experience. SWITCH OUT if you know what's good for you. she's a disgrace to ubc
An awesome prof. She puts in a whole lot more effort than any of my other profs by creating optional reading quizzes that serve to keep us from totally slacking off (as I would have). Personally, I hated biology until I took her class, but now I'm even considering majoring in it.
She really encourages you to think about the qustions before asking her. She does not give answer keys to practice exams, which I think is a smart idea, for you have to do your best to figure out the questions and then discuss with others instead of checking the answer keys. Her exams are not that hard but focus on applying your knowledge.
one advice: TRANSFER OUT!!!!!!
Wow, don't know what to say about her. Great? No, Fun? NO, Easy? NO! ATTITUDE? YES! Seriously guys transfer out! 9marks/40 for a multiple question! The final was fair, but its easy to fail. Also, she is very condescending, and think she is the best. The combat on the discussion board profs it all, UNPROFESSIONAL, not respectful prof
absolutely useless prof, useless notes (lots of pretty pictures, gives no info)refused to answer questions, not helpful, rude and disrespectful to students. reading quiz questions often had wrong answers and misleading wording (students had to point things out to her on Webct)..looks like the same comments from last year..can't UBC fire her already?
An excellent professor. She deserves a much higher rating. Low ratings are just from sorry students who couldn't get a better mark.
Redfield ruined biology for me. Her PRS/test questions are often ambiguous and not very relevant to the lecture notes. She refused to answer my questions and told me to post on webct instead. After that, I completely lost respect for her.
the worst prof ever possible!!! if u get her drop the course! i mean it srsly doesnt not teach and disrespectful HATE HER!!!
In all seriousness, her lectures are not worth going to at all. Nothing she talks about is directly going to be tested. If you don't want to get no answers to your questions, then don't ask her anything after class. Also her tests do test how well you can apply concepts, but overall they are not fair at all, so take at your own risk.
not giving answers to practice problems and especially the practice final was not very helpful for studying. Exams are easy to fail because grading is strange. Ok prof but tests are too hard.
Ya don't go to the lectures unless you don't want to learn anything. You might expect teachers to be of high quality but she doesn't teach at all. just learn from the text.

The way she marks exams doesn't make sense. I studied so hard for this class and I knew that I knew the material so well, yet I failed b/c of her absurb exams/marking techniques. DO. NOT. TAKE. HER.
The worst prof i had first year. Very rude and unhelpful. Stay away from at all costs
Her lectures are useless but the material is easy. She's actually very helpful during exams. I asked her billions of stupid questions during the midterm and final and she patiently answered all of them quite well. If you want to succeed in this course, use the webct forum!!! She may be unhelpful during lecture, but she's very helpful on webct.
Use your Bio12/11 notes from high school. Her notes are completely useless The midterm is more harder than the exam, b/c of space limitations, time, and pt value (8 mk multiple choice) so watch out!. PRS, online quiz, and projects will def help boost grade. Bio121, choose to do the reading week project (2nd sem) b.c it the most fun
great lecturer on ABSOLUTELY USELESS GARBAGE...so dont even bother to go to the class...god bless u all for failing...
Horrible Professor. The mid-term was written in such an odd format, causing you to fail or barely pass.. Make sure you opt in to the essay project and the weekly reading quizes in order to pass the class!
The worst prof in Bio department. If u r in her class, better drop out of it and take course during summer/next year. She looked alright in the starting but got worse to worst as the course progressed. No office hours (shes too busy with her reserach), not problem sets for practive. gave final and MT for practice but didnt give answer key VERY RUDE
To start off with, I don't think she's a HORRIBLE prof. But I do think that she can further improve her teaching methods, such as giving USEFUL notes. And do change the marking scheme of the tests, it is NOT fair to mark ONE mc out of 8! I nearly fail the mt because of that! And having office hours would be a BIG help. Transfer out if you can.
I wish I had a better professor. This is what you are going to think as the class/term progresses. She cannot teach. Her notes suck. There is impossible homework. Midterm is hard. RUN AWAY WHILE YOU CAN! Take it with a another prof. You won't regeret this. However, if you are an A+ student and up for a challenge, good luck.
very hard marker, doesnt give answer keys for both the midterm and the final. Class average was around 58% this year. Dont take this course if u want a good grade, however if u want to test ur skills, feel free.
With a constant emphasis on her studying career back in Harvard, it has nothing to do with her quality of teaching-- in fact, if you think "studying = good grade" in her class, you're totally WRONG. Email replies and messages responses are usually unfriendly (ex. constantly saying that other people's English is bad)...personal opinion only! LOL
Emphasis on purely concepts. Txtbook wasnt even useful. Hw was a waste of time and extremely long for 1%. Everything is marked on writing. MC can have multiple ans on exam.. or none and marks deducted for wrong ans.
WORST PROFESSOR AT UBC. IF YOU WANT TO AVG 50'S TAKE HER CLASS. IF UR A 90% ABOVE STUDENT THIS IS THE CLASS U BEEN WAITING FOR..
Lectures were generally interesting. We would spend hours on homework, with TA help and still get 40%, it was brutal. She gave me the death glare, after i whispered something about the carbon cycle, and have never been so traumatized.
You would never understand what you have been missed out on your Midterm. The reason she said of not providing the answer keys was asking us to improve??
Great professor. Took the class last semester and scored an A+ with very little effort. Concepts are explained clearly and she makes them easy to understand. I have no idea why she gets such a bad rating here... she's an amazing teacher.
Hard course but pretty good professor. Works hard to help students and provide many resources and is extremely helpful/active on Vista. She is a bit condescending and arrogant but otherwise she is a good teacher attempting to teach a difficult course.
Failure is your destiny.
The class average on our midterm was 50%. I thought she would spend the next class explaining what we did wrong. Instead, she showed us an optical illusion and explained how it worked for 10 minutes, followed by 45 minutes of looking at pictures of fish she found on Wikipedia.
Poorly designed tests. Ill-mannered and Disrespectful. Terrible methods used to assess learning. Careless lectures (Shows inability to answer questions). Useless at best.
I have never rated a teacher before and have come to this site to do so just because I feel that I must WARN STUDENTS TO AVOID THIS PROF AT ALL COSTS. I've never had a teacher with such unfair testing strategies. If you've read this too late... take the W because it's better than an F...
To be honest, don't take her class unless you really LOVE biology. She required pre-reading (quizzes based on this in every week) of the textbook; but her lectures never followed the pre-reading materials. She would be angry if you did not address her Dr. Redfield. Also, homework for each week usually based on recent biological journals (be ready t
She's arrogant, INSISTING that you call her "doctor". Her weekly reading quizzes and homework are time-consuming but essential if you want a good grade. Her tests involve deep thinking and logic skills that are practiced by doing the homework. if you go to class, do your work, and have SUPERIOR logic/writing skills, you should be fine.
I really liked her! I found her class to always be very interesting and sometimes funny. If you actually go to office hours to interact with her, she was helpful and clearly passionate about biology. I got an A in this course simply by doing all the work and studying a lot for the exams.
THE WORST PROF I HAVE EVER HAD!! She made me think twice about taking any other biology course, but after taking others, i realized that it was not the subject, but the teacher which was turning me off.. she was arrogant and rude, and don't even think about asking questions: she'll scowl at you like you're some stupid human being!
I didn't mind Rosie, although she seemed to ramble on redundantly near the end of the semester. Frustrating at times because either she refuses to give you answers or fails to fully explain them. However, I put quality time into the two weekly quizzes, read the text and semi-listened to Rosie and pulled off an A- while actually learning quite a bit
Absolutely terrible professor. She does cover all the material, with rambling on about random stuff 90% of the time. This course is stretched so far that the class can't possibly cover the material.she makes us read, 90% of which isn't even on the exam. I didn't even read the books she said are '30% of the final' and i aced the part. Classes useles
Never take her class unless you really love and understand biology. Her lectures may sound super easy, her exam might be okay, but the marks end up really bad. If you don't get the homework, you're screwed for the exam. Can't seem to find clear rationality in how she marks.
I know most people really didn't like her as a professor and I sort of understand why but she is one of my favourite profs that I have had at ubc. Her teaching style is a bit strange but i found the lectures really engaging. I pulled off an A+ in the course even though i don't normally do that well and she inspired me to major in biology.
Marks on grammar and spelling. Lectures are useless, in-class PRS questions were redundant and also useless. Don't ask her 'stupid' questions, she will openly mock you. Avoid her.
I don't know why so many people dislike her. She was a great prof, I had a lot of fun in this class, got a good grade. She made everything very clear and explained things really well. Exams were easy, quizzes were easy. Proper grammar and english is important in any course -learn it.
Best professor of my university career (graduated). I don't know if I would have really "got" biology if I didn't take her class. As long as you are willing to take a 'leap of faith' and focus on understanding rather than memorizing you will get tons out of her class and learn a lot in the process. Years later I still remember things she said.
She is very knowledgeable about biology... Don't take these ratings all too seriously. If you really have some doubt, go drop by her class on the first day. If you don't like her, then switch out.
Absolutely atrocious
Worst professor I have ever had! Extremely condescending, treats students with no respect. Cannot convey material at all to students. Whoever said if you like her the first day is absolutely lying. I thought she seemed like a nice and interesting professor my first day, however, it became evident she was incompetent and rude. AVOID!!!
TERRIBLE! She thinks so highly of herself, and tries to belittle students' questions in her annoying condescending tone. Avoid her like the plague!
She is a horrible professor. She can't explain things, she ridicules students. She doesn't have office hours. You ask her a question and she tells you to put it on the discussion board - you post it there, then she never replies. THE WORST PROF EVER IN UBC HISTORY. AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE.
AVOID LIKE BAD BO!!!! She rambles on in class and tells us to find the psges for weekly readings. Her tutorial readings are barely related to the tutorial questions. Just the other day she spent a whole lecture on advertising websites about genome splicing and interpretation.
Ridiculous. Lectures are not very useful, while tests are very difficult in comparison. She doesn't treat students with enough respect, despite saying "there are no stupid questions."
She's honestly not that bad. Yes she does ramble on sometimes, but it's often. She's obviously passionate about genetics and tries hard. Also, while she may not give answer keys, it forces you to discuss and helps you learn in the process. Lastly, to the 1st years saying she's condescending because she wishes to be referred to as "Dr." get over it.
As previous ppl have remarked, tests are difficult and marking is subjective and classes for one section (The one I'm in) start at 8:00 AM... so there's really nothing encouraging you to go every morning lol. Oh yeah I wouldn't even try to approach her in person... go as one of the TA's instead... if aren't just as condescending as she is.
The absolute worst. Stay away from her at all costs. Tests are unfair and absolutely destroyed my interest in genetics.
Rosie was fair. I asked her a question once and she was useless, but she is good during lectures and surprisingly more oriented than Moerman.
The course topics are very interesting and reasonably well presented. Evaluation is atrocious. Using the goal "make students think", the questions are confusingly, MC answers equally so. Students are left to themselves to sort out the alternatives. Little or no feedback provided. Totally at odds with the Coursera's mastery learning' ideal. AUDIT!
Interesting lectures but impossible grading with ambiguous questions and answers. More time spent on deciphering what being asked than actually answering the question. Very twisted grading policy on test quizzes where the final score is given with no indication which questions where rightwrong. Do NOT waste your time with this instructorcourse.
best prof ever
Horrible. The most ambiguous questions, and when approached about them, she acts as if it is ridiculous that you did not approach them with the same set of assumptions she had. She is incredibly rude to students, has no time for questions, and expects you to chase information (rather than presenting it clearly and organized).
Great course and her online lectures are interesting and informative. Not sure if there are any other profs for this class, but I would recommend it the class with Dr. Redfield
would not take this course agian
Super confusing lectures online with all her mistakes. She will not take the time to email you back FYI. She adds very challenging multiple choice questions that are difficult to answer because she has confused you with miss-information that is poorly corrected. The questions are more "you need to figure out on your own"
Useless during office hours - asked her for help and ended up leaving more confused after a hour of her rambling about nothing. No textbook and not really any lectures either. First half of class spent listening to other students' presentations and giving feedback, second half was group work. I learned nothing from her. Pointless and boring class
Her short lecture videos seem more like FYI videos and tutorials are a mess. She told our class that she doesn't tell us how to do problems in detail because she "doesn't want us to gain the system"..? So if you want to learn genetics on your own while balancing 4 other courses, go ahead and take it. Also if you like 23andme, you should take it.
Respectfully the most condescending and worst professor ever, her exams are complete gibberish and do NOT make sense. She rambles on for hours and in the end, nothing is learned at the end of the lecture and once she realized she was the problem, she introduced a new teaching method, which was somehow even worse than the original.
Rosie's lectures were very interesting and she emphasized analytical thinking skills in biology. Very few practice materials were provided and tests were somewhat difficult. She was tough but it's clear that she cared about our learning. Overall, I did learn a lot in this class and it was mostly a good experience.
While very knowledgable, her lectures consisted of an hour of saying "i dont know" to the student's questions. Her test were confusing, vague, and did not test our knowledge of the topics. If you are interested in pursuing biology, her class may be discouraging. She is quite stern and close-minded, but you have to just look past that.
