He is a great teacher and he always makes really fun (:
Super easy. Posts lecture notes after class. Almost pointless to attend lecture
tests are based on where the text book & lectures cross. good amount of extra credit opportunities. Ross is a great instructor. really interactive during lectures. throws candy after the break. pretty chill class.
All you really have to do is show up for lectures! His interaction with the class is the best part.
Very interesting and fun!
Awesome and interesting teacher. His tests are kinda difficult, but passable if you just pay attention in class. Attending lecture is the key to actually getting an A though. He's very friendly, although my office hours visits to him weren't always very helpful.
I've had Avilla for PSY1, PSY10, and PSY15. His grading procedure is straightforward, 3/4 tests count towards your grade with an optional Final. His teaching methods are fairly dry but he covers the require material presented in his tests.
Very interesting when it comes to his lectures. Straighforward
Straight forward, funny, awesome :)
Very fun teacher and makes his class throughly enjoyable by providing interesting examples and being overall funny. You can not attend lecture and easily pass with a B simply by reading. I stop going to lecture after awhile but studied the ppt slides and book and got an A. I would love to have him as a teacher again, highly recommend him!
Smooth, straight forward instructor and class. He's funny and professional. You don't HAVE to go to class, but honestly why are you even in school to begin with if you're not here to do your best?
Attend lecture and look over the lecture slides. This class is not hard, but if you're lazy... your grade in this class will reflect it.
I've had Ross for Psy 131, Psy 15 and Psy 1. So, I have to tell you all that he doesn't grade very hard, but he is tricky when it comes to what he puts in his midterms. Please, at least skim the book (especially for psy 131, not really psy 15) Because he does include random questions that are VERY specific to the readings. Please go to class.
Ross is simply one of the best professors out there. He is super funny and I love the guy! He teaches a couple of other Psych classes, but they fill up pretty quick. He's hot too so that's a good enough reason to go to lecture. Also, his tests are based off the slides and material covered. But definitely read the book over time.
I had him for both human sexuality and social psychology. His lectures are rarely dull. He doesn't grade on your general understanding, his exams are extremely specific. Make sure to read both slides & books & learn specific numerical data otherwise your scores will be average.
One of the easiest classes on campus. I went to lecture 5 times during the semester and came out with a solid A. Just read the textbook and study the powerpoints. Easy 4 units.
Straightforward. Attendance gives a chance of extra credit. No laptops in class, but it is interesting enough to hold my attention for the hour.
He is a charismatic professor, but I am a critical and skeptical student, and I don't care about charisma. Lectures were good, but could have been better if he paused to ask if there were any questions in between slides, and was more aware of the room for possible hands. Overall he was good, but just not great.
Very helpful and made the class fun. Also, if you do well enough on the first few tests you can skip the final.
Easy course, but I wish I put a little bit more work in. He's a great professor. Opened up to us and told us he was gay and discussed his research. Cool guy.
If you want a professor who can keep a large crowd awake and interested in the material Professor Ross is the one for you. He is very charismatic and does his best to make the class fun. If you do well in the first 2 tests you can choose to skip the final. Make sure you look at his slides most of the test comes from there! Good luck.
Took his PSY 1 and PSY 145 class. Super easy in PSY 1 but if you're in any of his other classes be prepared for a challenge. That said, the guy knows how to make a subject fun! I had so much fun in his PSY 145 class even though I got a B. Definitely recommend.
One of the best instructors I've had. Clearly, he puts a lot of effort into his lectures. He makes them entertaining and easy to follow. Not to mention he's a cute little thing. Put in some effort and you'll learn a lot.
This class is very useless. His lectures are really pointless and really obvious. The textbook he uses for this class is confusing because it's a customize textbook and he uses two different books and isn't clear on which book to use. Never willing to help or answer questions. Overall worse experience ever.
I was failing the class because I didn't study for the first two exams, however I studied and aced the final two exams and went from an F to a C+. He offers extra credit and is very clear about all subjects he covers, his class is very interesting and never boring. I regret not studying I could have passed with an easy A.
This teacher doesn't really help you out much. You ask questions and he doesn't seem to answer your questions. Pretends that he cares, but really he doesn't
He's Great!
The class overall is very interesting. He knows how to keep the students attention. His lectures are clear and informative. I also like how he gives great examples about the concepts and topics. The book is very useful. He is very approachable. When I went to office hours, I received helpful responses to my questions.
By far one of the best Professor's I've had the UC, very engaging, funny, and really cares about what he teaches. There is a lot of information between the lectures, videos, and book but he also provides multiple resources, so you really have no excuse to not pass his class. Attendance is required bc sometimes he will quiz you on his lectures.
So far I really love this class
Nat Sci. Major took the class as an elective, Avilla is great he really seems to enjoy and love psy!! if you want to ask a question he is super willing to answer he loves student interaction. You'll need to read the text to pass the tests, the readings are long if you wait to the day before the test. I would totally recommend Dr. Avilla .!!
Great professor! Very clear and entertaining lecturer and very helpful during office hours, not only with class related topics but with any topics in general also. Highly recommended!
Very fun class overall! But if you're just looking for an easy A psych class, this isn't it. 50 multiple choice questions on exams, but the questions are very tricky & many are based off readings from the book, so READ! 4 midterms total and a group projectpresentation. Dr. Avilla is very enthusiastic and he made the class very entertaining & fun!
I took this class over summer and I really enjoyed it. Ross' lectures are super helpful and you will understand the material a million times better if you attend lecture. He takes attendance using TopHat and gives daily quizzes on the day before's lecture. We had 3 exams, 50 questions, 2 points each. Pretty clear cut. Study and you'll pass.
MY FAV PROFESSOR OF ALL TIME. LOVE HIM. Looked forward to his lectures which says a lot considering they were 2+ hrs. long. He was so entertaining and the class always so interesting. I even enjoyed the book! It was very easy to follow and engaging. By far my favorite class ever. Tests ask questions on lectures and book so READ and show up!
Professor Avilla is an awesome professor! He really knows his stuff and knows how to explain it very clear. His lectures are filled with fun, it sometimes doesn't even seem like a lecture because all of the content is very interesting. After learning about psychology from him, I am not interested in the subject. Definitely take his class!
Dr. Avilla is a beautiful man. He is super adorable and stylish. His lectures are very interesting and fun so you never fall asleep. Although his class is fun you do have to work for your grade. For the final I read the whole book and got 100%. His test are straightforward. Go to office hours if you need help and don't slack off.
He's just simply amazing !
Dr. Avilla is hilarious and makes the lectures come to life. You have to read the textbook and study but it's nothing a little hard work can't help with.
He is simply amazing at what he does.
Ross is awesome. Love his class. He's funny, lectures are interesting and class is easy. recommend x 100!!
Ross is one of my favorite professors ever! I always looked forward to his lectures, and he really made the two hours fly by. He was enthusiastic about the material and a really funny guy in general. The test were easily passable if you pay attention in lecture and read the book. I would recommend him to any student interested in psychology.
He gives really interesting lectures which cover most of what is on the tests. For this class there are just 4 non-cumulative tests and no final with plenty of opportunities for extra credit. You do have to study for the tests but he gives study guides which help a lot. Overall I really enjoyed this class.
Avilla was an interesting professor and was rarely a bore in lectures. He gives study guides which are very helpful and should be done as you go along the course.
Very energetic and helpful professor.
Very easy to understand lectures, he likes to crack a joke oftentimes.
Read the slides!! That's all you really need to past the class. Never really read the book. Pay attention in class and take good notes.
GREAT PROFESSOR! TAKE! TAKE! TAKE! Class is fun, great guy, hilarious lectures, best professor I ever had. Go to class, do the reading (don't even have to take notes when reading), do all extra credit. Ace the class, simple as that! Some get by w/o reading btw.
I loved Dr. Avilla's class! He gives a ridiculous amount of extra credit. Midterms are hard, but he provides long study guides that really help you out.
Fun class
One of the best professors I've ever had. Going to his lectures doesn't feel like I'm going to class because they are so interesting and fun. Be sure to read the textbook for exams.
He is an amazing professor, his lectures are always interesting. It is difficult to fall asleep during these lectures. He is fun and engaging, I would take the class again if I could.
Hilarious
Loved the class, wish he'd be put more questions of the readings rather than the slides, kind of makes reading pointless but it is VERY IMPORTANT to read in order to understand the content, if you do that, you should have no problem passing.
AMAZING PROFESSOR!!!!!!!!!!!
Dr. Avilla is awesome! I definitely learned a ton from his class. He definitely keeps lectures interesting and I would recommend him to everyone. The tests were not that easy, you should definitely study for them because many of the questions are a little more complicated than you would think.
The only reason I put attendance as mandatory is so you won't miss his extra credit opportunities he'll mention in class. 4 exams is all you need to double focus in that class. He is available for office hours, and if you need to make up an exam, he is lenient! He convince me to minor in Psychology
Avilla was amazing! He made lectures engaging, hilarious, and bearable. He encouraged class discussion and the hands on examples he would show us would really help you understand the concepts he was teaching. He's really kind and caring, very friendly as well. The midterms are very concept based, and equal parts lecture and textbook readings.
Great professor, study hard and you'll pass the class! Great examples (Video Examples, Visual Examples) that make the lecture memorable. Would take him again, really enjoyed being his student.
Really good teacher and interesting lectures. Definitely read the textbook closely. The tests are multiple choice, but the questions can be a little tricky. Don't miss lectures! Attending class will help you on the tests, and the lectures are really interesting anyway. He's also funny. I laughed a lot! I want to take another one of his classes!
Awesome professor!!! So professional and approachable. He knows his material and is always open for new ideas or change. His classes are fare not complicated but full of knowledge. He is so so smart!! One of my best professors here at UCM. Gives great feedback and is very inspirational. You must take him.
Professor Avilla knows what he is talking about and makes the class fun and exciting. Participation matters - we had an in-class. assignment almost every lecture. There is also a group project at the end. He also offers extra credit.
Avilla is an amazing Professor his lectures are really fun and engaging. He is really enthusiastic which helps the class a lot, always making jokes and putting up funny videos. Attendance is mandatory, you get a code to put in Canvas, which helps your grade in the end. Overall I really enjoyed the class.
Ross Avila is Spectacular. Definitely makes learning easy.
Professor Avilla is a good lecturer. The class is very organized. There are 5 exams, 1 group project, and random in-class participation assignments. The exams are a mixture of lectures and the textbook. He provides study guides for the textbook. He provides class time to work on the group project. The class is very straightforward. I learned a lot.
Very inconsiderate and doesn't seem to realize we are in a pandemic. Required additional materials NOT included in syllabus and gave students four days to acquire them or drop. Absurd.
I am surprised by all of the positive reviews of a professor that is so unhelpful. In the few conversations I've had with him, Ross has demonstrated a complete lack of empathy for his students. Glad to see I am not the only student who has been left in the dark by this teacher. I expect better from UC Merced.
Totally oblivious to the needs of his students.
He's not bad. He loves to dock points if you miss certain classes. He removes points without prior warning. He will sometimes give you exams at the START of class as oppose to the end. If you try to ask him about it, he brushes you off! A warning of all of this could be helpful in preventing reduction of points, but that's not what he wants.
Reading the past reviews, it seems his classes were pretty good in person, but online, not really. He doesn't give extensions or much extra credit. If you have an online class with him, it'll be tougher. As a psychology professor, I thought he'd understand the situation of his students a little more. Most of my other professors do, so that helps.
You'll have 4 exams, 5 group meetings, and five excused absences. Read the textbook or you'll fail the exam. No, he doesn't curve. He's chill, but also gets frustrated when no one reads the textbook. Lectures are usually ~60 min but sometimes they feel way longer than that
He gives examples of homework before assigning it, and plenty of time after class to stay and finish homework if you need help. It was an interesting class and I learned a lot. Just be sure to do the work, anyone can easily pass the class while learning a lot. I highly recommend taking him,
Bro is pretty chill as a person, but can't say the same as a professor. He keeps his attendance code for 2 mins. IF YOU MISS THE ATTENDANCE CODE THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO POINT IN GOING TO CLASS. You only get 5 excused absences. He teaches off of his slides and gives a study guide that doesn't help. He keeps the class engaged tho (most of the time).
Avilla has zero regard for his students. He says he's open to change but when told what's not working he will just tell you why his way is better. There are four midterms, book and lecture-based, he provides a "study guide" but it's useless. The only good thing is that he is an engaging professor
Does not care about his students. He is very sarcastic and loves to drop your grade the second he has the opportunity. I told him that he never warned us about a specific grade drop, he said, "then read the syllabus!" this guy is COLD!
If you can avoid taking a course with this professor, avoid it. you lose points every class you miss. If you are going to show up to every single class, buy the textbook, buy tophat for the semester, and work extra hard in a class for no reason with limited help or resources, then this is the class for you
Student to student, dont take this class unless your trying to show up for absolutely no reason. takes points away for every class you don't show up to and exams are 65% of your grade.
If you can avoid it, avoid it. Material is interesting but he's not a good teacher. also has favoritism to men
Overall great professor, he allowed up to five unexcused absences. His course mainly consisted of exams (one exam per month) and allows to retake one exam if you missed it. He gives out extra credit on SONA and was passionate when it came to his lectures.
He takes attendance online, code is open for 2 mins. IF YOU MISS THE ATTENDANCE CODE THERE IS NO POINT IN GOING TO CLASS. You only get 5 excused absences. Gives a study guide that doesn't help in any way. Gives an exam each month, the exams are basically worth your whole course grade, exams are based on lectures and the book, BUY the book to pass!!
Took human sexuality Fall 2023. Very easy class, but attendance is part of grade. Homework is assigned through tophat but easy to do. Tests have tricky wording and are a larger part of the class so make sure to study because they are not open note. He does let you skip one test and use your final to replace it. As long as you show up you will pass
Hands down my favorite professor and instructor of all time across any school. His lectures are incredible and his classes have been the most useful to me in my personal and academic life. If I could give him a higher rating I would, definitely make sure to take his courses and really appreciate the subject material! I took PSY145, 157, and 170.
Engaging lectures, minimal homework, tests aren't too hard. Can't ask for more than that. You can miss up to 5 classes without it impacting your grade. Great professor, great class, highly recommend!
not even done with the class and already hate it.tests are 85% of your grade and questions are overcomplicated. tophat assignments do nothing for your grade.expected there to be some explicit content but not this bad.this is too much for it being a summer class so i would definitely not take him in person either.worst class i have taken at ucm!
Took him Summer 25. Amazing professor. Truly seems to care and loves what he teaches. There are not many assignments in the grade book so do your work and make sure to pass all 4 midterms. Super easy to pass and clear expectations set for him and for us. Definitely recommend taking him!
Human sexuality was mostly an educational comedy course for me. I would say that is the best description. This guy is a great professor. Your grade is up to you. You need to put in the work, go to class, study, and get your shit done. This professor throws down the most funny, educational, and sexual class. Have fun, enroll!
This professor teaches very fast, and it was hard for me to understand the material. To me personally, he acted differently when I tried to tell him about my disability. It didn't feel like he understood, and instead, he expected me to learn the same way as everyone else. That didn't feel fair to me, and it made it harder to get the help I needed.
