Very good teacher, I enjoyed class. (Took Evening class)
He is very helpful. If you need anything he will help you! His tests are very rigorous though so the class is not too easy. You have to write a lot of papers also, and he is strict on that.
I took his honors class, and it was anything but a cakewalk! He has a great personality and keeps the class interesting, but if you don't write papers up to his liking then prepare get used to what he likes in papers, and stick to thak tactic! His class was the only I didn't get an A in this semester! Caution; he is an extremely tough grader!!!
Good lecture. Easy tests if the material is looked over.
Horrible instructor. Could not understand at all. Talks way over your head.
THE BEST TEACHER EVER
I enjoyed his class. Only had one test and it was open book. You write alot of papers. Grading is tough but he will look over your papers and give advice if you ask for it. Attendance is 10% of your grade so if you go every day it is an easy A. He is smart and interesting...we never had a boring moment in class!! Loved it!!
He comes across really tough, but he is really a fair teacher. Do your work and pay attention, and you are guaranteed to do well. He is very detailed, and I really liked that about him. He expects a lot from you, but he was always eager to help. I'd recommend him in a heartbeat! One of my favorite instructors ever.
Mr. Wagner is an overall good teacher. Hes tough but willing to help. Nice guy. Its a difficult class if you aren't too great in english.
the worst professor ever. he is too much of a talker.
the worst instructor i ever had i dont think teaching is for Mr.Wagner. IF YOU ARE GOING TO HAVE HIM FOR A TEACHER I FEEL VERY SORRY FOR YOU!!!!!!!!!!
HARD ON GRADING ESSAY
Liked the class. Got an A in the class. Ross was helpful when I needed it. A bit sarcastic so if easily offended don't take him. I'd take another class taught by him.
He is a passionate teacher, but it is his views that count. If your opinion is different from his he is not interested in it. He was only clear on his tests, not his essays. He graded very hard. I had my papers pregraded by other prfessors and I always received 20 to 30 percent less of a grade on every one that he graded.
Lots of the selected material was boring, and this is from a literature lover! Fairly easy class, but watch out for discussion posts, he will rip your work to shreds if he disagrees with you and if you interpret something differently than he does, he will make you feel very unintelligent. (Took online)
Pretty easy teacher. Lot of work and time put into class assignments. Real helpful and easy to approach if you need help. Just be ready to spend a lot of time on your papers if you want to make an A.
Passionate in class, his views are more important than yours though and he is a NAZI when it comes to grading essays! Talks a lot, but is helpful if you ask for it.
He was a good teacher but was really tough. I took this class online and he was harsh in grading. Make sure you are also doing the discussion board posts. Those have a surprising amount of weight on your grade.
If you love English, take Mr. Wagner's class. He's passionate about the subject and, while he does talk a good bit, he's great at staying on topic (so he doesn't test you on things that weren't discussed) and is very open to feedback, generating great debate among the class. He does grade hard, but if you build a rapport with him, you'll be fine!
Enjoyed the class, I suggest you do not take this class for fast track because you will have a research paper after research paper. But really enjoyed his class!
Ross is one of my favorite professors. I recommend in person class rather than online if you can b/c he's a really cool guy. You don't get to see that in an online class. Besides, he can be totally sarcastic and if read online, you might think he's being harsh. His class requires work but hes flexible too. Really knows his stuff & teaches excellent
Wagnar will improve your writing skills in many ways. However, the student must give in work that is above average, he teaches each student how to improve.
Why else attend school, but to learn. Wagner expects students to deliver the best, but he teaches the content you need to know. The atmosphere is engaging and he has a comfortable sense of humor.
Grades to harshly and writes rude comments on returned essays
Great Teacher. I did some volunteer work with him and really got to like him. I read some of the other ratings and I can't believe they said is a hard grader. Try Treffinger if you want an arbitrary, hard grader. I love Ross Wagner. He is great. Funny too. Another Flannery O'Connor disciple.
Fair grader. Lots of writing, but it was a writing/literature class. You only learn by doing it. Wish ENG 101 had spent more time on critical reading (didn't take that with him),would have prepared me better for this class. I found him funny, insightful, helpful. Great personality. Enjoyed the class, had to work hard! I would take him again.
Took this class online and I will never take him again. At the beginning he seemed nice but he turned out to be a real smartalic. He writes rude stuff on your essay comments and he makes fun of you for the dumbest stuff. He made fun of me for his class being my first online class. I was very offended. His tests are really dumb.
Mr. Wagner is a great teacher and his class is very interesting. There is a ton of reading in his class and like 4 essays. Have to go to each class because of pop quiz which are easy if you read the stories. VERY hard on grading essays but leave a lot of comments to let you know what you did wrong. Test are easy if you read.
A useless instructor
Be prepared for a lot of writing, and not a lot of advance notice on each assignment. Lots of 10% grades, highest is the research paper at 20%. Be wary - he requires you to attend 5 cultural events as part of your grade, not extra credit! He does ask each student to lead a discussion on a poem of your choice.
I was worried from his reviews but after about 3 wks his sarcasm toned down & he was a really good teacher. Yes, it's a hard class, you have to do the work, he is willing to help you. Reviews for tests, study what he tells you. He wants you to think about things, always more analysis for test answers. Very knowledgeable & quite funny. Learned alot
He literally tells you exactly what you need to know, gives sample test questions, and gives you the format. You have to do the readings for the test. He is very helpful on essays and will stay after class or reply to emails if you need help. After his class, I feel like a better & more detailed writer. He loves to talk so be ready for lectures.
Class is a lot of work, Wagner is not considerate towards students needs. Does't seem engaged in course but is very punctual for a professor who does not teach much at all. Do not take with him you are better off with someone who cares about teaching and will actually teach you.
Rude comments on work, not professional at all. Grades lower than of other professors who pregraded my work. Does not accommodate any emergencies, not even ones that are medically excused, not professional once again. He loves the subject, but lacks the communication with class.
Mr. Wagner is a tough professor but why go to school without the intention of learning. I am currently taking his class and have seen a dramatic improvement in my writing skills after just the first 2 papers. (The tests are all writing by the way. No multiple choice.)
This class was harder than a speech therapist friend of mines coursework. There are a lot of short answer questions on the tests. He is a tough grader when it comes to papers. He had 5 cultural events we had to go to, but that was an easy 100. I knew some people who took his literature class after us, and I would not recommend taking either one.
horrible teacher he judges you for your absences even if you are ill. All in all a horrible teacher DONT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!
Prof. Wagner is a fair grader, straight-forward in his approach to the course, and willing to give positive and constructive feedback. He truly cares about how the content of the course will affect his students' lives. Prof. Wagner patiently worked with me on multiple occasions and helped me to succeed in the course and beyond. Strongly recommended
Had to take an online class, and during the summer (so more stuff squeezed in shorter time frame), so my experience may differ. A LOT of reading. Blackboard stuff was no problem, but having a test on 10 reading materials with sub materials for each?! If you work 40 hours, and have another class (I had a 3 hour class 3 times a week), TAKE IN CLASS!
Online class was pretty hard. BB discussions were easy, but the readings in the book were a bit much. To me the tests did not make up the material we read. Also left rude comments on papers. Might take this class in person next go around.
Lots of reading and weekly discussions you must submit. He gives great feedback and engages you think about what you read.
Good class but be sure to research the papers and have them grammatically correct. essay topics can be broad but he is looking for details and of course have a good thesis.
I tried to keep an open mind after seeing him. I couldn't after hearing him. I didn't want to do this to him, but he is negatively impacting too many young and vulnerable lives.
I took him for 101 and 102 he is a good teacher but grades harshly so if you do not have time to go to the writing center make time. if you did not make an A in 101 do not take him for 102 because he will expect you not to make stupid errors. Essays and tests can be subjective so be sure to make your points very clear or he will not see them.
I had Ross for a summer class so it was an intense timeline for the coursework. He can be strict with students who are late or don't show up to class but if you care about your grades he is super easy to get along with. I can't wait to take another class with him.
Every time I have emailed this professor, I take an online class, he is always quick to respond with some snarky comment. Granted I have only emailed him twice asking simple questions regarding submissions. He's extremely rude and sarcastic. No compassion or respect to his students and what he does.
Just keep up with your reading and make sure you have good grammar
Mr. Wagner is... pretentious, but the guy knows his stuff. Remember you are not there to make friends with your instructor. Get past his personality and focus on the task at hand. If you have a question, ask it. Why else are you going to school for? This class can seem difficult at times, but remember you are only in this class temporarily.
Great teacher. Make sure you do the homework, it is not that difficult. His handwriting is a little difficult to read but he does not have a problem discussing his reasoning on papers. He loves feedback and to make you question things, in a good way. It helps you think!
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS ONLINE. I took his 102 class in person and all we did in class was going over the readings from our homework. He does have a dark sort of humor and uses sarcasm frequently. Other than that his class was quite interesting. Your grades for this class are basically tests and the essays you will write, then a final project.
LOVED HIM. If you want a professor that challenges the way you think, I would definitely recommend taking one of his courses. I had him for ENG 101 and ENG 102. He gave me my first B on a paper. He is a harsh grader, but it is only for your benefit. He is always willing to help you become a better writer!
This class was more difficult than I thought, but I did enjoy it. Mr. Wagner is a tough grader for essays, but he is also very thorough and helpful so that you can be more prepared for next time. The timed online tests are not multiple choice but entirely composed of essay(s) and short answer analysis. Tough but good class!
Professor Wagner is an awesome teacher. The only way you will fail his class is if you don't do the work. He gives great feedback, and he ensures that you learn. Your'e the only way you could fail his class. He is very helpful, a little sarcastic but he means well. I'm so happy I had him summer semester. Professor Wagner is a teacher at heart!
Mr. Wagners class was challenging , but definitely improved my writing skills and consciousness. Hes a very genuine caring teacher, who will help you every time you reach out. Hes a tough grader but fair. Overall very very helpful, he comes off as indifferent/ intimidating but is a sweet prof once you get to know him.
Funny Professor, easy to get comfortable with. Grades very fair . Read every assignment he gives you they will be on the test .
Overall great professor. His lectures are not scripted but based on the readings and terms. Tests are fairly easy if you know the terms and readings for the section extremely well, more details the better. He is an extremely tough essay grader. You get a day with him in the computer lab to discuss your essay and the next class the paper is due.
Mr Wagner spent more time talking about his love of fanfiction and talking about how pretty the girls were than actually teaching english. He does not grade papers fairly and while he is available to speak to outside of class, especially for the final paper he can come off very condescending. I would warn people to never take his class.
He is childish and even a bit rude to students. i hated ever second of his class
Do not underestimate his class! There is a lot of readings and weekly posted discussion, the test can be about anything! While he seems pretty approachable with any doubts you have, the final papers are very hard, and he grades and comments on every detail.
He is just a crazy tough grader and gives you the work load made for 15 thousand Harvard students.....
Great guy, can get sidetracked. Assignments are work-heavy but as long as you don't procrastinate, you should be fine. Gives you all of the knowledge you need to at least pass the class. Papers can be difficult, but it's because he wants you to think, so there's almost too much freedom to the subject choices. Very friendly, fair grader.
Professor Wagner gave no structure for this online course. He did no check-ins to see how his students were progressing or understanding material. He did not reply to emails. He could be a good teacher for in person classes but for online classes he was lost. There were no videos of him giving lecture he just linked some obscure youtube videos.
Once and a lifetime kind of teacher. Super freaking funny. Would take another class with him just to be around his personality again. Still love him, but expect quite a few big essays, and he's a bit of a tough grader but leaves lots of notes.
If I did not have to take this class .. I would not have. The multiple choice test make no sense , on top of the test essay question. The discussions were the only easy grades in the class. If you do not have a group chat with friends? You will not pass by yourself. Prof. Wagner is a nice person .. but his class ? not so nice
Professor Wagner is a harsh grader. He is very passionate about his job as a English professor, which is great. However, he is so passionate that he expects our essays to be similar to scholar paperwork, as if I was being published for research. He also feels that is right all the time. He is not an advocate for students. Do not take this class!!!!
He is a lovely teacher. Tutoring or brainfuse will be your life saver for his class.
I enjoyed this teacher a lot! He interacts with his students a lot and enjoys chatting before and during class. Talks for most of the class period. Gives lots of comments on submissions, but not all are penalized. Understands that life happens and will help if something comes up.
Expected a lot from students, sometimes it was hard balancing his work with other classes (especially if taking a full course load). Made me feel rather uncomfortable asking questions as to why I was out on sick days (even after I emailed and told him what was going on). Lots of reading, along with a big presentation at the end of the semester.
If I had a chance I would not take Wagner again. He expects way too highly of his students as he expects scholarly papers. The class was also boring. He would just ramble the whole entire class. No actual presentations or in-class discussions. He is also a bit rude and sarcastic.
If you want to ameliorate your writing and argument skills, then Mr. Wagner is the professor you need. He demands concise arguments, strong evidence, and skillful composition. When there is room for improvement, he will surely find it. If you listen and improve, then you will leave this class a better writer. He is also incredibly understanding.
I loved this class; the essay topics were interesting, and the grading was fair. He also gives a lot of feedback on the rough draft and the final product.
I took Professor Wagner for ENG 102 and I have a few notes. Make sure to proof read your essays multiple times and never forget to read the reading as there are pop quizzes, don't forget to annotate the poems and readings to help you better find the information. His class is difficult and I wouldn't take it again, but you can get through it.
Professor Wagner was a tough grader. This is my first B in years for English. His tests are very hard, though it could be because I have test anxiety. For test essays, the grading process is a bit easier. Two major essays were given. Beware the reading is strenuous, especially with a full plate of classes. He is very honest but seems to mean well.
Absolutely loved his class. Very engaging during lectures, & makes sure you understand the content when you ask for it. He has a lot of discussion boards, but they're easy to complete. He will go through your essays and provide comments on it, so read those! He provides all the texts in blackboard, so just read those and you'll be fine.
He gives out so much reading to the point it can be hard to balance his class with others. Some of the reading is not even talked about ever again. Why assign reading to never touch on it again? His feedback for essays is very in depth but contradictory. He said there was no need for plot summaries but left a note asking why I did not include one??
I couldn't balance this class with a full course load, as well as a job. He gives you one assignment a week, then randomly two essays and a test all due in one week. Was impossible to manage timewise for me. Essay grades were grammar heavy and I failed all of them because of that alone. Would not recommend unless you have a lot of free time.
One thing about him is you will show up to class and he will ramble about random stuff not even useful. He also likes to grade very hard especially on essays. I usually have no issues with essays but in his class highest grade I got was a 83. He also likes to randomly assign test and essays due on the same week. So time management is key.
Will throw a lot at you very quickly. Extremely tough grader when it comes to essays, don't expect to get over a B on one, no matter how hard you work. His lectures are either integral to the tests or are irrelevant to the course. I will probably avoid taking another class with him.
I have taken English 201 online over the summer and let me just say it was quite difficult. I only had two classes this semester but it felt like I was taking five just because of this class. There is so much reading to do and all the assignments are poorly scheduled. You will have to do an essay, discuss posts, and a test all in the same week.
He is wonderful. Very helpful with homework and responds to emails quickly. Accommodating if need be. All around a great teacher.
Wagner is my favorite of the professors I've taken at Greenville Tech. His grading is difficult, and the workload large, but he is pushing you to do more than get an easy A at a technical college -- he wants you to think critically, gives plenty of feedback on essays, and allows his students wiggle room for creativity in their assignments.
Very kind, and graded pretty well.
be mindful when you take this class, this professor will find anything minor in your papers to mark down your grade
He's a decent professor, I've had worse. But he goes off on tangents on the regular and he's a tough grader. There were 2 times in the semester when 3 things were due the same weekend. Hes not the most approachable professor. Once you figure him out it's fine. I got a D on my first assignment, but then I got a B on my next one. So yeah.
Mr. Wagner is a tough grader, but I found it to help me more than anything. He puts very detailed comments on all essays to help make your next one better. This was my first semester online and I felt like I was still actually going to class because he sends out videos at the beginning of the week that are very helpful.
He is a tough grader, but I do feel it helped me become a better writer. He is very detailed in his comments so that you can do better on the next paper.
I have never been as stressed with school as I have with this one course. If you would like to have time to work and have any social life at all, pick a different professor. There was a semester when I was doing 18 credits simultaneously, 9 of those credits being from labs, and It was still easier than this.
The teacher is very terrible with timing. One week I had a discussion board, and essay, and a test with a multiple choice and essay portion, all due on Sunday. His instructions are very unclear, and expects a lot of you when he doesn't teach it. He is very easy to tea away points and is a HARSH grader on essays.
