Took us for walks around campus. Most classes spent on grass outside St.Johns!
spent classes outside so he could smoke a lot
Great professor! Funny, interesting and his lectures are actually entertaining. Laid back and super approachable.

Super nice and very helpful. The only class i never wanted to skip.
Took it through Campus MB. Very concise, sharp, and witty. A bit of a monotone, but who could sleep through a Paradise Lost lecture anyway?
Marks kind of hard... but if you're good at it then I guess you'll get A's.
Horrible. Impossible to please. Attitude is all students should be avg and gives lots of C+ and Bs. Thinks he's hip or retro or something. The ultimate example of a bitter prof.
I spend my classes playing hangman and mash. He is so boring and his lectures are pointless. He spent an entire class comparing The Merchant of Venice with Cheers and Seinfeld! I used to love english but now it just feels like a waste of time.
wants everyone to be average, will give mostly c's and b's... really boring lectures
hard marker.
A good prof, lots of humour, lots of variety in his classes.
really hard marker, very confusing lectures. Didn't want to know who students were, until that bit him in the ass. Don't waste your time.
Made the class interesting and fun. Don't think he marks too hard. Great Prof!
very hard marker .difficult to pass the course.
great prof. very funny and easy to talk to. he also takes the time to know your name, which is very refreshing. didn't think his marking was terribly hard, i somehow got an A in his course. he let's you do rewrites, which is awesome, considering im a science student
Jerk, opinions are unreasonable. Just an old man with nothing to do but make life hard for those in UofM.

Very approachable and friendly prof with decent lect. He even knows students by name which is great. His essays are marked really tough but he allows re-writes, so its hard to complain. Very fair exam, if you read and understood novels. Put in the effort and do the re-writes and you'll get B+ or A.
your essay will be failed with 2 or 3 mistakes in it!!
this guy is a real big jerk! a VERY arrogant man! if you have him change profs immediatley! he's not approachable at all!
Try and you'll do good.
Mr Campbell is a very good prof. I enjoy his class cause really all you do is discuss and hes actually a pretty funny guy. He is easily approachable but make sure your grammer is correct on your essays or you'll get docked. Really good proffessor and dont listen to the negative posts... its ****

I see he was a big help with your grammAr..brutal prof..his English course isn't about English...it's about Religion and books overpowered with sexual references..HOWEVER..I can say that you can read the novel the day before the day before it's due..and do the essays the night before..and still pull off a C+..happened to a friend of a friend of min
good proff. thinks all students should be average because guess what? you're essays suck! you should read them after the course is over and you will see. You are average until you finish the course then you are slightly above average... slightly. very funny guy and easy to talk to.
usually pretty boring, hard marker but allows re-writes which is solid...finds english wayy to enjoyable its boring as hell...question: cant a quote or book just be writtin without the intent of any metaphores, not everything has been written with a hidden agenda, COME ON....
Good prof, quoted the Simpsons. Kind of a hard marker, but my essays improved and I got an A. Very nice, very funny, knows his english.
Read the novels he assigns, because he'll kick you out of his class if you don't.
brutal marker, and never has constructive criticism or suggestions on how to improve. very dull lectures, which almost never have anything useful in them
No Comments
talks wayy to much about metaphors, it seems as though everything has some sort of abstract meaning. The fact that he allowes re writes is good... but the fact that he is a tough marker doesnt help
Cares a lot. Awesome stories, allows you to do rewrites on work thats done during the year. Tough marker.
I never really enjoyed his class, although he does allow rewrites.
Awesome prof, would take his class again in a second, If you want to read good material, and learn about it in every way this class is for you, non-english majors beware, reading is a must.
A terrible professor in my opinion. All he basically did was tell stories about himself. lectures were brutal and did not facilitate taking any notes. Assignments were incredibly vague. Very, very, bad.
I am a science student but his 20th century literature class was my favorite - really nice guy who is willing to help you learn and get a good mark
Excellent prof!! Approachable, funny and smart. Makes class fly by!
Lit and the City. He's a really good prof, very approachable, funny guy, he does make time fly. His assignments could do with more specific instructions, and the readings are VERY necessary. Do NOT get behind, it's impossible to catch up.
Humorous, loves the subject, very into teaching.
Really great prof. Try to keep up with readings- if you fall behind it is pretty much impossible to catch up. You can do really well in his class if you make yourself known and go and ask for help.
He's hilarious, and obviously interested in his subject. He provides really good feedback on essays, but doesn't seem to want to hear anyone's opinions. I got the phrase "You entirely missed the point" a couple times, even though I got As on all my assignments. He wants you to argue HIS point, not your own.
He spent a lot of time talking about irrelevant material (such as telling us the story about Hansel and Gretel for an entire class). Essays were semi-difficult. What I liked was the option for a rewrite/semester if you didn't do too well on one, and the books that we read were interesting.
Very hard but very interesting
Excellent professor, would recommend to anyone.
ugh try to avoid this guy at if at all possible. He likes to choose fav.'s early and that helps with a large portion of your grade. If you dont show up to 3 classes u get 0/10% attendance. Really biased, and marks extremely hard. Gives re-writes once a sem, but your mark will go up a max of 3-5%... try to get someone else
overall he was a good teacher, i liked his class. he had a lot of interesting info to teach, but he called on people at random so it sucks if you dont know the answer. i would reccommend him, just go to class and you will learn a lot.
Mr. Campbell effectively redirected me to the sciences with his class. Essay topics are extremely vague and if you don't hear it you're screwed, he is a hard marker, and has his favourites who cuddle up to him every now and then. Avoid this professor AT ALL COSTS.
Very good teacher, but the class is a lot of work. Has very interesting stories.
Great prof, talks to you as if you're his friend and remembers everyone's name in the class; very flexible during lectures and just speaks. He kept me interested most of the time; good luck getting an A+, but hey, its first year english right?
Roy is a good prof. His lectures can get a bit long because he just stands in front of class and talks the whole class 99% of classes but most of the things he has to say are interesting and he is pretty funny. IMPORTANT THOUGH : this class WILL hit your GPA, he is a tough marker and the exam is also hard.
He is a pretty nice guy. He is a really hard marker though, so its hard to get a good mark on his essays. If you go to him for help and bring a rough draft he is pretty helpful and that will get your mark up. His lectures are pretty slack becuase all he does is talk the whole time, but pay attention because he calls on people sometimes.
I didn't like this class at all. The course syllabus said that this course emphasizes on development of writing skills... There was none of that in his class. His comments on essays were chicken scratch and barely comprehensible, thus making improvements on your essays difficult. Become a brown noser to this guy early on for good grades
professor is fair, and values participation. best piece of advice i can give is: introduce yourself, participate, and read your material. If he sees effort he will give you a good mark. he seeks those who participate and is loyal to them; however no such thing as an A+, but i got an A, it is possible.
He showed movies EVERY DAY FOR TWO HOURS A DAY. Very angry; I signed up for an English class, not a Film class. Told some anecdotes for 10-20 min then hit play on movie. Did no close readings or analysis of texts just expected to read them. Might as well been distance ed. Only his opinions are correct; just regurgitate what he says and you're fine.
pretty hard marker and a pretty hard class to get a good mark in. he has about 5 students in the class who he likes and the rest are invisible to him. is not very approachable after class
Absolutely the worst prof I ave ever encountered. He is an arrogant blowhard who only teaches so he can listen to himself talk. Doesn't follow his syllabus, moves tests dates, rambles on about nonsense for the majority of his lectures. Absolute waste of time and money. I regret taking his class.
What the hell is wrong with the person below me? Roy Campbell is not the best teacher around by any stretch, but I was in the same class as them and he really isn't bad. Look at the course load for the ENTIRE year. 5 ESSAYs, 3-4 pages each! Not an easy marker by any means but he is fair enough and interesting to listen to. no surprises on the exam
What the hell is wrong with the person below me? Roy Campbell is far from the best Prof around, but very far from the worst prof as well. He is fairly interesting to listen to. LIGHT COURSELOAD consisting of 5 essays for the ENTIRE YEAR, 3-4 pages each. The final exam has 3 essays which is kind of bogus, but he takes questions right off his tests
Thought he was funny at first, then I started falling asleep in his class. I stopped going and would only go once every two weeks to see if I was missing anything, which I wasn't. He rambles on and on the entire class, and honestly, I haven't learned anything. Dropping this class so that I can focus my efforts and money elsewhere.
If you like English, do NOT take this course. Campbell does not focuses on the literature but on his opinions of the literature. I was extremely disappointed with the lack of teaching and instruction. He ruined the idea of studying English at a university level for me.
I didn't like this class at first, but if you attend class regularly and participate in his lectures you will do very well in this course. His tests and exams are not meant to trick you, as he wants his students to do well in his class. Yes, he is a hard marker, but he is very fair and will reward students who make the effort to improve.
He expects nothing from you and that's what you learn. NOTHING. No passion for teaching, no expertise, and no clue. He tends to hand the answers straight to you and then give you a C for effort. Only seems to be in it for the payday and vacation time. Sad man.
His lectures are interesting. He explains the material in an engaging manner, using stories, films, and anecdotes. Coursework expectations are high, but he encourages creativity and rewards hard work.
Science student taking this class because I had to- HATEE english. Honestly this teacher is straight forward- marks fair and gives you what you deserve. Put effort in and he will see it. always willing to help, and always giving hints on what will be on the exam. Go to class, listen, and ask if you need help. I think he was awseome! &funny.
Very good professor, understands the plight of Engineering students having to take an arts course. Attendance is mandatory, no tricks on the exams or tests. Encourages students to use proper punctuations.
Very good professor, understands the plight of Engineering students having to take an arts course. Attendance is mandatory, no tricks on the exams or tests. Rewards students just for having proper punctuations.
expects direct quotes in in-class essays. prepare to memorize random crap for grades. talks a lot, goes on tangents often, doesn't have slides or anything to facilitate note-taking. goes over potential test questions before, no surprises. very passionate about the books studied. calls on students frequently. due dates were sometimes inconsistent.
Through 4 years of high school, and 3 years of college, I have never received an English mark below an A... I struggled to get a B in his class. It isn't so much that he has high expectations, but more so that he analyzes the work to find ways to deduct marks. I, as well as others in the class, never really understood his marking scheme altogether.
Very joyous professor and has a great connection with the students (knows you by name!). I disliked the idea if the course in general but am glad Mr. Campbell was teaching it, otherwise it would have been a snoozer. Gives great feedback on assignmentstests and is always open for questions after class and during class.
It's fair enough to say that he often goes on tangents and it may appear counter-productive but he always finds a way to relate it back to the subject and has hilarious lectures. Perhaps the greatest thing about him isn't how tough he marks papers or unique his annotations are at times, but his willingness to help everyone.
He was my favourite professor of my entire university career to date (finishing up my 3rd year at the u of m). All of his stories are related to the lectures, he's clear, gave great first year information about writing essays. He is hilarious and lectures were always very interesting. He gives good feedback on tests and yes, they're tough, it's uni
Hardest English grading I've experienced so far in university, if you need an English credit steer clear of big Roy. What is taught in class is hardly relevant to exams and essays, he expects you to relate lectures to your own time research without telling you this. Feedback comments also come across as rude and degrading, in my case. Goodluck
Roy was a very likeable prof. His class involves a lot of anecdotes, so if that bothers you keep that in mind. I found him to be pretty tough on papers, and less so on in class tests. I didn't really like the class because I found the material to be boring, but I think he did his best in trying to make it interesting.
Hard marker, but gives good feedback.
By far the BEST prof i have ever had! Best book list ever. I learned so much. I found his lectures interesting, he has true passion for the literature he teaches. I loved this class and learned so much. Come to class and the tests and exams will be easy, he's always dropping hints on what you should know. He also makes an effort to learn names.
Roy is an absolute gem. I cannot say enough about what an amazing instructor he is. He ignited such a passion in me for literature, he is absolutely inspirational. I took his course a yr ago & I can honestly say I still think about his lectures to this day. I would always go to his lectures w/ such pleasure. I could go on but Im only allowed 350 ch
Overall a very good prof. He genuinely cares about his students and makes it a priority to get to know them on a first name basis. Friendly, funny, and makes topics as interesting as possible. Only critique is that he's a tough grader on papers, especially on those written in class.
Didnt like him much at first as he babbled the whole class. Since it's a full year course, have gotten to know him and I just love him. He is passionate about what he teaches, replies to emails fast, and will help clarify confusion. Hints about things that will be tested. Class participation is required, and notices when you put effort in essays.
His lecture is interesting in some aspects as he talks a lot about the background of the problem. He is also caring and pretty helpful when it comes to questions, but he is definitely a tough grader. I mean really really tough. And the way he teaches does not facilitate taking notes at all so you might have troubles with what to write down.
You can see a magic that you're falling asleep in 2 minutes when he starts to talk. And he is a tough grader. So.... good bye my gpa
He talks for the whole class and discusses the literature passionately. However, he often digresses and talks about other things more. He is a really tough marker and gives good feedback but sometimes takes marks off if you dont share the same opinion as him, which I dont think is fair.
He is a tough grader and kind of blindsides you with harsh feedback . I thought I was a decent writer but now I am a little less sure. That being said, you can tell he truly cares. Most online instructors sit back and would NEVER take the time to help (HE makes the recording/marks the papers). From my POV, he just needs to work on his delivery.
his exams are hard, he is a though marker and doesn't help at all
He is an extremely hard marker, second degree and have never been marked with such minute details. However, he does recognize hard work and is caring when it comes to making sure you understand where the mark came from and how to improve. Gives excellent feedback, written and audio.
Professor Campbell was by far the most difficult human being I have ever had to deal with. His feedback is at times mean but I also learned the most about writing and about myself from him. He pushes his students to their full potential. I only dislike that he takes of marks for a difference in opinion which is not fair but overall he's great!
I took ENGL 1200 in the 2018-2019 semester and it was one of my favourite classes. I actively looked forward to class and enjoyed the way Professor Campbell taught. He was available outside of class during the office hours he specified on the syllabus. He is a tough-grader but you should do well if you attended lectures and take good notes.
The class itself was very dry and boring, but the professor, Campbell did not help whatsoever. Lectures were consistently off topic and always about the professor himself the pace of the course was about a month and a half on one single topic! and attendance sheet used for participation marks. Absolutely terrible class + professor, do not recommend
Took ENGL1200 with him. He's not a bad person, but makes it hard to stay engaged in class when all he does is talk non-stop. He'd play movie adaptations of the books and would pause every time someone says something, so a 2 hour movie lasts 5 classes. Not a lot of creative freedom in essays. If your opinion isn't the same as his, it's wrong.
Roy is the HARDEST grader I've ever had! He is quite rude in his feedback and it makes you feel like crap about your writing tbh. I will never take a course with him again, this is a first-year course and he made me never want to write an essay again. This guy is not nice!!!
Boring in class. Talks like a frog. Corrections were rude instead of helpful. Dont recommend anyone take this course. Buddys a joke.
Took his course over the summer, he cut down the usual workload to make it more manageable. Nice guy, lectured a lot and sometimes went off topic but pretty much explained what he wanted on the essays in class. Just show up and participate when he gives the chance. Wasn't the absolute easiest marker either but Id take his class again.
Roy is genuinely a good dude. His lectures mostly consisted of him talking but I assume that in an in-person classroom setting it would have been more of an open discussion. Also goes on lots of tangents. Definitely a tough marker, I recommend basing essays on something he'll agree with. Overall a good guy but might come off differently to others.
Feedback was contradictory and harsh. If your opinion doesn't match his, you will not get a good grade. 0 room for creative freedom in this course. Grading rubric is not clear and subjective depending on whether or not he likes your opinion. Would never take this class again.
Dont like this prof at all. If you can avoid him taking it distance DO SO. I dont recommend him at all, he is a tough grader so dont expect getting a A or A+ from him. Judges your essays on your OPINION instead of actually grading it based on syntax. Please avoid him.
I don't recommend Roy at all. His feedback is in the form of audio messages for the distance learning course. He will rip apart your essay if he doesn't agree with your standing point. Very critical and doesn't go about it in the nicest way. His comments were very condescending and rude. For a first year course it was horrible.
Awful professor. I have never been given less than an A on any university paper, in this class I have been unable to get anything above a B and I have NEVER put as much effort in. His feedback is awful, it is impossible to know what he wants because he marks opinions, no corrections on my actual writing. He makes you never want to write again.
Absolutely horrible towards his students, I'm in shock at his grading. I would advise you never to take him and avoid him at all costs. He grades your paper on opinions rather then requirements. He leaves rude voice messages on your essay and makes you never want to write another essay, and with being an international student oh my goodness!!
I wasted my money and lots of time getting is this class. He is very bad grader oh my god how bad he can be . Believe his lectures are almost zero important . 80% of time dont know what is he saying he is just like connecting dots with what no one knows please dont take him he doesnt give marks no matter how u try also his lectures are useless
I think an English instructor should try and find the true essence of your writing skills and build on that. The instructors opinion should not matter on anything, only to follow true academic guidelines. I learnt more about good writing from google than from this instructor. He has no idea how to connect creatively with a student..
Best Prof I had in uni, and I didn't even major in English
Some people just can't teach. Expect criticism and lots of rants, feedback was not helpful and did not make me a better writer. If anything it encouraged me to never take an English course again because it was not worth the effort. If you can, take the course with a different professor or get your written credits from a different class.
