Not really any lectures given. A couple chapters assigned to read and then an EXTREMELY hard test. Incredibly intelligent and knowledgeable in field but not clear in explanations or teachings. Had to drop and will try another professor next time...
Mr. Kaplan is a great teacher! He is very helpful and appreciates his students participation in class. Be prepared to work hard, but he will meet you half way.
He was a very good teacher and tried to help everyone do well...if they didn't do well they have themselves to blame.... Dr. Kaplan,Thank you very much for dedicating so much time into helping us learn chemistry... with out teachers like you there would be no hope for our generation, Who ever hired you knows what is needed for JTCC
Dr. Kaplan is an extremely knowledgeable professor. I had worries about my ability to participate in this class due to my inactive status in chemistry for over one year. However, with his helpful teaching technique I now feel the confidence I need to continue with the class despite the difficulty and work required for this particular topic. I reco
Dr. Kaplan treats you like an adult, and doesn't check to make sure you do the homework. He assumes you will do the reading before class and homework after class and bring any questions you have to his attention. This class takes some work on your part- but Dr. Kaplan will bend over backwards to make the material understandable. Highly recommend.
He always just babbles about nuclear chemistry. We are not taking chemistry to become what he wanted to be. I thought chemistry would have covered more during the semester.
Could not have asked for a better professor. Wish they would all teach like Dr. Kaplan. Willing to explain things over and over, until entire class is ready to move on. Will help individually if needed. Had him for 111 also, and learned so much continued on with him for 112. Test-difficult, but no surprises. Miss you Dr. Kaplan
Everyone rated this teacher on his personality & not on his teaching quality. Most people FAIL his class. He teaches fast, he doesn't explain everything. Expect 50% or more of your tests to be on stuff he didn't teach you! YOU must read the textbook on your OWN! His lectures alone won't pass you. I DON'T RECOMMEND him if u want to LEARN Chemistry!
He is a good teacher, but very hard. The tests are ridiculous because it is impossible to understand the questions, and some of the stuff is things we didn't even learn.
I would definitely recommend Dr. Kaplan, he is an excellent teacher! If your looking for a slack class however, look somewhere else. He does expect you to read the book before classes and at least be aware of what the class is going to be about. His tests can be difficult but they are definitely reasonable for any college level course.
Highly recommend his class. I learned a lot after not taking a Chemistry class in over 10 years. Very knowledgeable. Willing to help & patient if you don't understand something. You will have to read the chapter and do homework on your own (as you should in any college level class). Reasonable tests.
quite possibly the easiest class I ever had! reviews everything thats on the test the day of the test...this was summer 5 wk session so the classs was supposed to be 4.5 hours...we got out in 2-3..and more 2 than three. I would take him again any day! it was easy but i still learned a lot and he cares if you understand the stuff
He is the best had him for Chem 101 and Chem 111 got A in both of classes. He does a great job for explaning the course.
Dr. Kaplan was great! He really enjoyed teaching us and had fun with the class. Tests were pretty straightforward from lectures and homework. He goes over everything and really tries to make sure you understand everything. He's very friendly and easy to talk to and I really enjoyed having him as my professor. Definitely take him for this class.
Dr. Kaplan is awesome! I took him ove the summer so its not hard. He doesnt use powerpoints and works problems out on the board until everyone understands. He does assign homework from the book but besides that the book isnt too useful. I recommend his class! He is such a nice guy and cares about everyones grades and success!! TAKE HIM!!!
He is the best teacher that I've ever seen.
Dr. Kaplan is a good teacher and will make you understand the material. It is up to you to do your homework study and ask questions. He treats you like an adult which you are now this is college not high school...This was an easy class if you pay attention and do the work...
This was a waste of time and money. Allows some students unfair advantages (cheat sheets) without telling others. Incorrectly uses universal chemistry symbols on test. Told classroom about another students learning malfunctions, and how he kicked her out of class. Take him if you want help like a poor, high school student, then fail in college...
By far the best college professor that I have had! Extremely easy going & so funny! Makes Chemistry easy to understand & if you don't get it he is always available for help! Read your book, he goes over a chapter or two in class but leaves it up to you to actually read the book! After all that's what happens when you get to college! Take HIM!!
A true asset to JTCC - covers the material until everyone gets it - if you don't, speak up! Self directed learning is required as w/any college class. Will mentor and work w/any student that needs help. Cares about students!
Dr. Kaplan is the best teacher I have ever had. This is the only class I actually look forward to coming to. He is very helpful and will make sure everyone understands until he moves on and he will stay after and help you if it is needed. This is a teacher who really cares about his students and is always trying to help.
It has been over 20 years since I have been in school and I was terrified of chemistry! Luckily, I was put in Dr. Kaplan's class. He is extremely helpful and presents the material in a clear, understandable and fun manner. He genuinely wants his students to succeed and will do all he can to make sure they do. Take Dr. Kaplan's class!
Great teacher...makes it worth coming to class. includes wonderful stories that is relavent to what we learn. Makes sure you understand the info. I am signing up for dr kaplan nest semester...If yoy are afraid on chem or have been out of school for a period of time...take dr kaplan...
I loved this class! Yes it was hard at times, but Kaplan was always willing to answer questions. He made the class fun too. Dr. Kaplan is a Great professor. Just as a note, the tests are almost all math problems.
Best professor I have ever had! I had him last semester for Chem 101 and received/worked for an A. He expects you to work for your grade, but makes the material somewhat interesting. He is a very entertaining professor and highly recommend him!
He's definitely one of the best teacher I've had. He's lectures are indeed fast. But he goes over again and again to make sure everyone understands, and answers all questions. He expect you to do your part of the study and will not spoon-feed you on that. Remember class might be hard, not because of the teacher, but it's Chemistry.
Dr. Kaplan was an awesome professor. The material is hard, but he is very good at explaining it. I went to extra help often and wound up getting an A. I never thought I could get an A in chemistry, I also never thought I would enjoy going to a chemistry class!
This is not the class you want to take. He will give special treatment, based on random criteria, and even if you do make that cut, you will not learn what it takes to apply and move on in Chemistry. Gave answers during exams, talked about students personal lives and left errors on exams...all in all, a risky situation, for a pivotal class.
Dr. Kaplan was one of my favorite teachers in college. I had him for both CHM 11 and 112. The classes are difficult and I'm not good at science, but he made things fun and interesting. He is always willing to help and really wants students to succeed. If you work hard and ask for his help, you should have a great experience in his class.
He is the best teacher. He will teach you and take the time that you need. I would say if you gonna take Chem 101 he is the best. I got an A in his class and I was really bad at chem in High school.
Great professor. Very funny. Wants to see his students do well. Willing to help. Makes things more simple than other Chemistry prof. Would take another class of his.
great teacher. willing to help, funny. would take another class of his.
Great teacher. Very helpful, funny, and informative. Highly reccomend.
I meant Chemistry 101 in the comment below.
I agree with other raters that this Professor plays favorites. It is based on random criteria. He teaches way beyond a basic Chemistry class should be. He is moody too. His tests were ridiculously hard. Do not take him.
Dr. Kaplan was awesome! He LOVES the subject and is very interested in having his students love it too. Gives extra credit opportunity which was great. About the favoritism issue: He will respond to you with the same enthusiasm/interest that you show him. Sleeping in the back and not paying attention will not cut it with this Professor.
He's a nice guy... but he can't keep track of what he's taught, probably why he puts random and irrelevant things on the test. You will fail only because the tests have no correlation. The book is never used and he offers no external source of studying (like OWL). Avoid.
great prof. test can be tricky is you dont go to his office hours but aside from that he's great
He is great explaining chemistry and formulas. He loves to show videos. A lot of questions on the tests come directly from the videos. I like watching documentaries. He is the right kind of teacher. You do not need to buy an expensive book for the class. Everything you need to know he teaches. Write the notes he puts on the board.
I never take Chemistry in English language and i was so afraid from Chemistry class but after taking his class, I started love and enjoyed it and got A. He is the best, I love his class, he teach very good and show us some videos, take with him, you will enjoy his class and get A.
Dr. Kaplan is absolutely a joy to learn from. It's not an easy class, but if you're willing to work hard and really study, you'll do well. The text book is used more for research and isn't implemented in class a whole lot, forcing you to actually pay attention and engage with the teacher. If you do that, the tests are easy!
Very helpful and very kind teacher. He knows what he is talking about and he does whatever he can to help out. He does a great job of teaching.
I love Professor Kaplan! He really knows his stuff and makes learning fun! He is also really nice! He had us practice A LOT, and take turns doing equations on the board. He always took as many questions as possible! Great, great teacher! :)
Honestly, I had neve had Chemistry before this class, and was unsure of what to expect. However, not only is Dr. Kaplan the best teacher for this class but he will go out of his way to help you. I not only enjoyed the class but now want to get a Chemistry degree later on. Go to his office hours!
Hands down one of the best teachers at John Tyler.
Love Dr. Kaplan! Very helpful and does review before each test which is huge for me. Office hour is highly suggested. He moves kind of fast in class but if you try really hard you can make it through and do really well! Highly suggested. Plan on taking Dr. Kaplan for 102 if possible =)
Dr. Kaplan is very helpful. Don't be afraid to ask as many questions as you want. He can be sarcastic at times but he is always willing.
Dr. K is one of those teachers that you need to make sure you pay attention and take the notes. He gets a little scatterbrained at times but usually backtracks to help you understand. He is a wonderful person to be around and is GREAT at sarcasm, which always makes a class 10x funnier. I wish I could have him for the next level, but alas I cannot.
Not a good teacher.
An INCREDIBLE teacher. Anyone complaining that he's bad is only upset that they themselves didn't put forward the necessary work to complete the course. He's VERY knowledgeable, insightful, funny, kind, and wise. Take his class (in the morning!)! Always ready to help anyone, no matter how many times he may have already gone over it in class.
Dr K, is one of those teachers you won't forget. Great teacher. Study straight from class notes (does not use the book much) so yeah, I recommend showing up to class but you can still grasp what's going on without coming. The guy does a great job of explaining and, if your having problems, he's very approachable. Take him, you won't be sorry
Dr. Kaplan is an exceptional teacher. His passion for the subject is evident. Also, when it comes to delivery of subject matter Dr. Kaplan is a genius. Thanks to Dr. Kaplan I understand and love chemistry. If you want an A in this class take meticulously notes, do the in class presentation and attend every lab.
Dr. Kaplan is a great teacher. Always helpful and understanding. He truly wants each student to succeed and does everything in his power to help you. I took a chemistry class the semester before and dropped out because the teacher was horrible and I was so lost. Kaplan made everything so easy with his excellent teaching and helpful advice.
Dr Kaplan is a Great professor. Does not teach from the book, although you may want to use the book as a supplement. Lots of note taking- no slides but provides supplemental handouts. More than willing to put in extra time if you need it but he does a very good job of explaining during class hours. Would not hesitate to take him again
Kaplan's a nice guy, and I really did enjoy talking to him; but between him teaching the same material 3 weeks in a row before realizing the third week what he was doing, and his out-of-order teaching that makes notetaking hard, I had to drop the class after missing two classes because I was so confused and behind, failing quizzes despite studying.
Awful clarity and not helpful at all.
I took chemistry in high school, and it didn't go so well so I decided to give it another try. The fact that this class was way more than chemistry 101 was ridiculous. He goes on and on about nuclear chemistry like that's what we signed up for. I was expecting fun and enjoyable subjects, but it wasn't that great. The tests are difficult as well...
People left in the middle of class and he never cared. I hate chemistry but it was okay for a science class.
Dr Kaplan is a tough, but fair chemistry teacher. He explains things well and uses many personal stories to explain concepts. You can't find a more dedicated teacher. BTW, he gave me a great reference to allow me into nursing school.
Dr. Kaplan gives you several ways to improve your grade by allowing a presentation to replace a low test, giving points if you evaluate the class, or by participating during class discussions. He really likes teaching chemistry and his industrial background gives him lots of stories related top what we are studying.
Dr. Kaplan was an amazing teacher, he did a great job of explaining things in a way that made sense, I suck at chemistry so I had a hard time, but almost our whole class passed without too much struggle, he also drops the lowest test score, if you give a presentation which he grades with a super easy scale.
Dr. Kaplan was an amazing teacher. He helped me with all my questions and was always encouraging. He lets you drop a grade if you do a presentation, and he's really funny, which kept his lectures interesting. The labs are a lot of fun, too.
Awesome teacher, I was skeptical about taking a college Chem course especially since it had been 6 years since I had been in school. Dr Kaplan will work with anybody if you ask. The tests do get somewhat tough. 4 credit classes means you cant miss too much or you'll be left behind. Has all old tests on blackboard as well.
Kaplan was an okay professor. Although the class was somewhat difficult, if you ask for help, hes certainly there for you. There are Labs to be done so participation matters. The tests are really tough if you don't study a lot. Most of the problems are fill in the blank and problem sets but you study you should be fine. Would I take him again? Nah
Dr. Kaplan is a great, laid-back Chemistry professor with a goofy sense of humor. He's student-friendly and does NOT require a book or Mastering Chemistry. Tests are reasonable but challenging, but hey, it's Chemistry. You drop the low grade with a presentation. He's personable and realizes that 101 is for non-science people. Would take again.
I just finished CHM-101. It was a great experience. Dr. Kaplan gave us a chance to substitute a presentation for a low test grade. I'm not a science major, so chemistry scared me, but Dr. Kaplan made it fun and easy.
I took honors chemistry in high school and that class was harder than Dr Kaplans. If you took chemistry in high school, you will do fine in his class!
I had a great summer semester in CHM 111. We did some interesting labs, especially the patent project. Dr. Kaplan made the class interesting and gave us several ways to get extra credit. I'd recommend this class to any STEM major. I went to a four year college and this class was much better than any class I've had there.
I'm absolutely terrible at chemistry but Dr. Kaplan does an excellent job breaking down the material and makes an effort to help students that are struggling. You definitely have to pay attention and do the classwork to understand the concepts but he gave us a lot of group labs and would play relevent videos to keep things interesting.
He is all over the place when it comes to teaching and does not have any organization. He is a nice man; however, his teaching method is overall confusing and hard to learn from. My friend who is a biochemist major could not even understand his worksheets. Would not recommend him if you are someone who needs organization to stay on track.
Dr. Kaplan is one of the most organized of all my professors at John Tyler. Each day he puts the items we will cover on the board and then proceeds to go down the list. He puts things in terms we can understand. Chemistry is hard and you must do the work.
Dr. Kaplan is one of my all-time favorite professors. He really wants you to do well and if you approach him, he is more than happy to help. However, he won't molly-coddle you; you do actually need to put effort in. Study hard, do the optional homework, go to class, and you'll do fine. And again, if you're struggling, you can always ask him!
Awesome teacher! Gives ample opportunities to get extra credit. Chemistry is one of the hardest classes you'll have in college and if you don't apply yourself, you will not do well. Really dedicated to helping students succeed.
Roy Kaplan is an amazing teacher. I had him as my instructor for CHM111 and he is great at explaining chemistry. He makes it much easier to grasp. He really shows that he not only loves the subject, but also really wants to help his students understand and love it too. I would definitely recommend him to anybody looking for a chemistry teacher.
Dr. Kaplan makes a clear list of what he will cover each class. All course material (including previously administered tests) are online so great for studying. He gives you all the information you need in class, goes a little fast but there's a lot to cover, if you put in the time at home you'll be fine.
Of all the teachers I've had over the years, Kaplan is one of the best. He's very organized and covers the material well. Anything you need help on, he's always willing to work with you on it. His tests are pretty hard but he offers a project at the end of the semester to replaces your lowest test grade. Hilarious guy, would definitely take again.
Dr Kaplan was the best teacher ever! Chemistry was VERY difficult, and he does teach fast but he is always willing to stay after and assist with questions. He is amazing and worth the drive from Chester!
He really cares about helping everyone pass, had the opportunity to replace your lowest test grade with a presentation and he dropped our lowest lab grade, got 2 points of extra credit added on to final grade for taking class survey
Great professor. Very organized. Offered extra credit with an oral presentation or patent project.
Professor Kaplan is fun and clearly enjoys teaching chemistry. He has plenty of industry experience and certainly knows what he's talking about. He gives plenty of opportunities for extra credit if you need it, and you probably will.
Dr. Kaplin is a beast. He is very funny and loves the field of chemistry. Has the most experience in the field. I highly recommend taking his course. He is a old fella but that doesn't stop him from cracking some cheesy jokes.
Dr. Kaplan is an amazing professor, he is passionate about his work and cares about his students! His material can be heavy but he always reviews any assignments if needed. He only tests on what he teaches in his lectures. He offers a lot of extra credit as well.I highly recommend Dr. Kaplan for anyone who needs to take chemistry!
Dr. Kaplan is an amazing teacher. He really breaks down everything so you can understand it. I am terrible at all things math, which is funny since my major is chemistry. He took the time to answer questions and really wants you to succeed. As long as you are willing to work and show it, he will help you. Also his jokes are 15/10. Would recommend.
Professor Kaplan is the first chemistry professor that genuinely tries to make the course as enjoyable as possible. He was a chemist himself and passes along that knowledge to his students in an understandable way. Also, his chemistry jokes are the cheesiest I've ever heard. 10/10
Dr. Kaplan is a GREAT professor. He was a chemist before becoming a chemistry teacher. At times I felt that he had too much knowledge for an introductory chemistry class and expected more. He is very fair with his grading. He is always willing to help. I never missed a class and at times still felt lost. Lots of Math. This was a hard class
Dr. Kaplan is truly dedicated to chemistry, he is incredibly knowledgeable on the subject. He really tries to make the class exciting (as much as Chem is able to), defiantly participate in class. Overall great professor and class, he'll make you work for an A.
Dr. Kaplan is an excellent chemistry professor. I am terrible at anything science, but he made the course enjoyable with his humor and personality. He doesn't use PowerPoints which is a plus in my book.
I am a science major and I found this class to be the hardest class yet! Dr. Kaplan worked as a chemist, and because of this, expects his students to know as much as him. Makes his tests extremely hard to the point where studying is useless. Study guide and actual tests look nothing alike.
Dr Kaplan is a tough but fair profession. His class moves really fast but college chemistry is one of the hardest classes youll take. Hell help you out if you show interest in the class. He is really knowledgeable and expects you to work hard for a good grade.
Kaplan was kind and made sure you understood the material. He basically gave you the tests ahead of time and spent class reviewing. Solid choice!
I have mixed feelings about Dr. Kaplan. On one hand, he does care about his students, and he's funny and sometimes his lectures are engaging. But other times, he's difficult to understand. And there's quite a bit of homework. Another thing I had a problem with is the random questions that popped up on the test.
If you want an A or B for Chemistry 111 then stay awaaaay. He grades his tests way to hard. I've studied for hours, got help from tutors and never cracked a B on a test. Very harsh grader (taking too many points off for sigfigs and other tiny mistakes). His labs are way too confusing . Will replace a test grade with a presentation and drop and lab
Dr. Kaplan is an excellent choice for students who work hard. His homework is very applicable to what you are learning, and if you do the homework correctly, you will learn a lot! His tests are just like the homework problem sets.
This was one of the toughest classes I have taken and I'm usually an A-B average student, but this class was extremely challenging and its important to stay consistent w the material. The tests were graded extremely sensitively. Deductions in a heartbeat. Overall funny and extremely intelligent professor!
Dr. Kaplan is truly a caring and fun teacher, who makes learning interesting. He wants to see you succeed, you just have to put in the work to get there. DEFINITELY, will answer any and all your questions (in person, email, or phone) because he wants to make sure you get the information. He's a fair grader, understanding, funny, and knowledgeable.
Dr. Kaplan is an incredible professor. He is extremely knowledgable about all aspects of chemistry and presents the info in a way that truly makes sense and also keeps it fun. He cares deeply for his students and goes above and beyond to answer questions and offer help. I took him for two different classes and would take him again in a heartbeat.
I had Dr. Kaplan for CHEM my first semester in college. I am now a senior at VCU and have maintained straight A's through difficult classes such as organic chemistry because of the problem solving skills that Kaplan taught me. I struggled with chemistry before his class, but I was able to excel and love the subject because of him! He is the best!
Dr. Kaplan is a great professor and very knowledgeable about the subject he teaches. Having industry experience, he is able to relate the concepts well to real-world examples, this makes it easier to grasp the subject. He explains the topics well and thoroughly, and is very patient if you don't understand. Also, he cares a lot about his students.
Dr. Kaplan is awesome! He was always happy to meet 1 on 1 and was patient and thorough when it came to explaining tough concepts. He challenged me to think outside the box and develop problem solving skills that would extend beyond chem. This helped me keep high A's in tough courses like organic chem and has inspired me to add chem has a 2nd major!
