Anything he teaches will not be on the test. One time he made a mistake on the test, and so many people got it wrong, we came up to him. He acknowledged the mistake but said chemistry is like life its not fair. jasontutor.com, the best thing.
Lies about his tests. Useless review sessions.
Makes a mistake in everyone's grade and tells us to contact this other person instead of taking care of it himself. His reviews will hurt you more than not going. He works out half a problem and tells you to do the rest.
This guy appears to be nice and helpful, however we soon discover that he's the ultimate freshmens' nightmare!! He misguided us on exam, stating that there would be a lot of nuclear chemistry when in turn there was hardly any. He ruined my faith at SB.
if youre a girl walk to his office alone. he might give you bonus points on the exam. worked for me. otherwise hes pretty bad.
Helpless and whines a lot. Toughest professor ever.
more talk/flashiness than substances in lectures, if you are unlucky enough to have him along with alexander for 132 you're gonna have to learn the material completely on your own. I don't really think he knows it himself anyway. Tests are unfair...
this man is a horrible professor. he seems nice and knowlegable during lecture but his classes lack actual substance. his tests are very tricky
he makes u more confused... never go to his review sessions....they don't help at all... he covers only 2 problems during review...
Horrible professor
Lecture is a waist of time. He tries to teach you the whole book in a few sentences if you what i mean.
i think all ur comments are a bunch of crap, i took che132 and my class rank was #1, i think lacey's a good professor and his tests are fair
he doesnt teach well, however, he gives fair grade, and easy get good grade in his class, coz he cruves alot^^ i think he is not that bad prof if u r not that bad learner.
He is a prof that don't seem like to teach. He is a nice and helpful person, but just never there in class. He always does stuff late. If you take this class, be prepare to study own ur own. I only like him, bcuz he is lazy lol
Capa's weren't bad but his tests were tricky. The best way to do good in this class is not to go, just read his notes, read the book, do the capas and cram for the tests
He's crap to people who aren't putting in a lot of effort, this isn't High School Chemistry he teaches, professors don't do the work for the students. He's a great professor.

Lacey is the worst prof. I have ever seen...He speaks with an accent, he doesnt explain crap, his tests are crazy, and hes just horrible...
Not by any means the best, but definitely better than the huge majority of other professors in the dep. in the sense that he cares about students and tries very hard to explain the concepts in classes. Barely any professors have ever dropped materials on a test or postponed CAPA because of an upcoming exam? He really wants students to learn
tests are very tricky. doesn't make sense...best bet is to cram for the test and hope that you are a good guesser.
He is a great professor who cares. Who else would spend extra time in school giving students review sessions? He would respond to our emails as soon as he gets them.
He is not too hard to understand, but his exams are so difficult! It doesn't matter though b/c he curves like crazy! Impossible to fail this class! Lacey cares about students & wants everyone to do well! Holds @ least 3 review sessions outside class per exam. Learn on ur own & ask questions!
good man but doesnt know how to teach
hes a really nice guy and cares about his students..he even gives review sessions outside of class on his own time, but when it comes to the test good luck!! hes better than hanson, but thats not saying much..his tests def are tricky so make sure u study a lot! he's also always either late 2 class/unprepared or cant figure out the cps for some reas
He is give extra class to help us for the midterm and final. His teaching is pretty ok compare to other chem teachers.
He gets his test questions from different websites! Tests aren't that bad! Repeat questions!
I dunno about you.. But Lacey was awful. He is a nice guy, so sweet and tries to be helpful... its just that hes not helpful. I got a C in the course (like 80%) and I worked my butt off so I guess youre really on your own. Good Luck.
He knows alot about Chemistry, just not alot about teaching it. The examples he gives us to study from are easier than what will actually be on the test. The CAPA quizzes were far past what he was teaching. When lecturing he's many times lost & can't work the CPS system. He gives review sessions though. Very nice guy, but teaching isn't his forte.
I like Lacey, he tells you exactly what equations he will give you on the test and has a genuine concern for the students. His tests are straight forward, if you do a lot of practice problems you'll do well with him!
intelligent man, knows alot about chemistry, tells u what will be on the est, but the capas are way too hard and the midterms and final are sumtimes based all on 2 or chapters and nothin to do with the rest, so when you are studying, you are actually gambling
I thought he was a great professor. Organizing your chem variables and info and reading before class makes a huge difference. I did well because I went through the hard problems in the book so that I knew I understood the chapters. The exams in class are tricky, but not insane.
I thought Lacey was useless, he repeats himself way to much, he doesn't address student's questions in lecture, and he can't make a test, 2 of the questions on our last test had NO RIGHT ANSWER, he screwed up the grading on all of them. Overall, he tries hard, but he's not a good teacher.
He can't admit he is wrong. I don't get it. What a jerk. Too bad he is a good lecturer.
Lacey is awesome. He honestly cares about his students. His tests may be a bit challenging but it's college chemistry, you can't expect to breeze through the class. If you go to lectures(VERY IMPT), try a couple of hw questions and pay attention to the things he points out you will def pass the exams. Good Luck!!
OK so chemistry may be a hard subject but he does not teach the main points about chemistry, the final was made up of mostly questions from tests 1 and 2 which he had nothing to do with. He is passionate about chem but he cannot teach it to well and he can indeed not come to the fact that he may be wrong. Just deal with him.
NO CPS questions, care about his students, and his exams are decent (didn't study at all and did extremely well) if you go to lectures dare to approach him and take notes and go to his reviews he holds you should do alright. he has a jamaican accents which could be a problem to some people. final was ok was reapted questions from old exams.
Better than Hanson
i think this professor is the best this university has seen so far not going is dr roy lacey a good teacher he is also a very fair person overall he makes it easy to learn thank you dr lacey
Amazing professor. Goes at a great pace and I truly can't believe how people based the grades below off of. I can safely say that everyone I talk to about 131 with Lacey loves both the class, but mostly, him. Awesome professor. Corny jokes, but gotta love him. Tests aren't the easiest, but I guess w=f/d ...i think
Lacey is completely useless as a teacher. We spend at least 10 minutes during each lecture waiting for him, because he does not know how to use the CPS. Lectures are more laid back which only hurts the students when Simmerling's tests come around. Only good thing is that he offered extra credit to people who did the homework early.
I do not understand the people that find fault with this professor. He puts so much effort into the lectures and is very helpful. Reading the textbook before coming to class is very beneficial and will make the clicker questions a lot easier.
Spends 20mins getting the CPS to work. Never finishes all the slides but means well. I get annoyed because he shushes us a lot. Homeworks are a breeze compared to Simmerling's. Read the textbook for sure. We don't really appreciate him until he is gone and we get Simmerling.
Very nice man and very understanding. He seems to enjoy teaching and while he may go at a somewhat slower pace then another professor we had in this class he still gets to all the main points. As long as you read the text book you should be fine. Tests can be tricky when it comes to wordiness.
Prof. Lacey is the BEST!!!! He takes out his time to help his students and holds review sessions which are also extremely helpful! He is also vey understanding and I definitely recommend him!
He's such a great guy, and you can tell that he really cares about his students. If you read the textbook, the tests aren't that hard. I liked him :)
In a nutshell: Great professor, comes to work on Sundays to give us review sessions before exams, good sense of humor, but very hard class. READ the textbook before each lecture and you'll be alright.
He's a great professor. He takes time out of his schedule to hold review sessions prior to midterms and final. He really cares for his students. Also very friendly and actually replies to emails you send him. His lectures are interesting but you will have a better understanding if you read the assigned textbook chapter(s) in advance.
che is jus hard in general, he speaks really slow
Everything below this is completely true! Roy Lacey is a very entertaining teacher. His lectures are fun and easy to pay attention to! Be sure to read the chapter assignments before class. Go to his reviews and do the homeworks and you should be fine
I love prof lacey!!! he is such a nice professor and really wants everyone to do well. he holds review sessions and stays after class to help students. its not an easy course and you have to work hard. read the textbook and go to the learning center. prof lacey is awesome though!
If you did not take any chemistry before taking his lecture, wait for another professor to teach.. His lecture basically shows slides(from textbook) and gives quiz. You can't really "learn" from lecture.
A good professor! Very organized, one of the first things he gives you is a detailed syllabus telling you what to read and by when. Teaches from slides but it's still better to go to class for the clicker questions. Holds review sessions and is helpful in general. Does many examples which can be good or bad, depending on your proficiency.
Definitely possible to get an A in his class as long as you don't get lazy as did I. He holds a lot of review sessions so attend those, do multiple practice problems before the test and keep up with the reading as he teaches it and you will definitely do well. I'm surprised at his low rating. Definitely deserves higher. Much easier compared to 129.
One of the better Chemistry professors. If you keep up with the reading, do multiple practice problems and come to class you can DEFINITELY get an A in the class. I'm surprised at his low rating, he deserves much better. Especially when compared to Hanson or Tooker teaching 129.
Very helpful and makes Chemistry I much easier.
Dr. Lacey clearly enjoys teaching and chemistry a great deal. He holds a lot of review sessions during the semester and talks to anyone who has a question after class. Some of his explanations aren't that great, the info is organized weirdly, and the practice tests are a lot different than the actual ones. He's still pretty good, though.
His class is challenging but fair. Chemistry is not my favorite subject but Lacey makes it interesting and bearable. I highly recommend him as a teacher. He's one of the few teachers in this school who cares and is interested in the subject he teaches. Five stars.
Professor Lacey has a lot of heart and is very interested in the success of the students. Tests are fair but can be really difficult if you don't study a lot. Quiz questions in class can be hard/tricky so pay attention. Overall he's a great teacher and fun to have.
Material makes sense when he's teaching it in class, but homework isn't as easy as the examples done in class. But overall he's a much better teacher than some of the other CHE 129/131 Teachers at stony brook. Going to class isnt mandatory besides clicker questions, but falling behind is easy if you skip classes.
he is a funny person. Dislike that the whole clicker thing but other than that he is a good professor that likes to teach chem.
Awesome teacher! He makes chemistry so much easier. So helpful and teaches everything you need to know for tests.
He's really cool and funny. My class was at 830 in the morning but sometimes hed say things that make you burst out laughing. Upbeat too. Keeps the class engaged.
Professor Lacey and his energetic, enthusiastic way of teaching has made Chemistry enjoyable and a class to attend and look forward to. Clickers are used to reiterate the material covered in class and readings prior to class, truly an effective way of learning. Overall he is a great person, let alone an awesome professor. Recommendations to all!!!
LMAO to everyone that said that this professor is and awesome professor he is useless and does not know how to teach chemistry at all he thinks everyone has his brain and believes we only need one day to learn the material i would not recommend this professor to anyone because he will not help anyone learn at all.
Overall a good lecturer. He is engaging and very approachable. Occasionally things are brushed over, but it's not a big deal. If you read the book and do some studying you should be able to do well. My pet-peeve is that lectures are noisy (talking, texting...), I wish he would be a bit more strict in that respect because I find it very distracting.
After taking Lacey's CHE 131 this semester, I have mixed reviews on him. He TRIED to hit all the material we needed in class, but due to his absence in 3-5 classes (lost count), our class was behind a bit. He rushed through material all semester, making me cram the book for information on tests and homework that he neglected.
Lacey's one of the most interesting teachers I've had! He has an interesting accent, but it's understandable and makes class fun! Also, he holds review sessions on the weekend. If you do poorly in his class, you're not trying.
By far one of my favorite professors. His accent is understandable and gives us great laughs. My friends made a list of Roy quotes and he is just a brilliant professor. He requires you to read the text book but his clicker questions aren't bad and his lectures are amazing.
I learned a lot in this class, but just attending class isn't enough. You HAVE to read the book. The class isn't difficult. It's just tedious. If you do what is required, such as reading the sections before the lesson and doing the hw, you're guaranteed an A. Tests aren't difficult if you know the material. Highly recommended.

The problem with this course is that it's designed expecting that it is going to be your hardest class for the semester, like for the usual premeds that take the course. There's just way too much stuff to memorize if it isn't your "flagship course" for the semester. Lacey doesn't make it any easier, the slides are mostly just taken out of the book
Prof. Lacey is a good person - however, as a professor, his head seemed to be place somewhere else this semester. His multiple unannounced absences along with the superfluous mistakes in his lecture examples made it very difficult for me to learn much from him. I would have to give credit to my own studying from the book and homework for my A.
Awesome professor, very helpful, very into what he is teaching. The material is sorta hard which is why I'm guessing he has bad ratings, but he's a GOOD professor!!!
Lacey is such a nice and considerate professor. His accent is so cute and he goes out of his way to help students in need. The course is a difficult one, but Lacey is clear and you can tell he genuinely cares about the students. Probably one of the best chem professors ever.
i learned more from reaing the lectures myself and attending recitation than i did sitting in boring lecture, but lecture is mandatory because there are clicker questions (mini quizzes) you get graded for. he does not explain how to do a question like the clicker one, until after you submit your answer. lacey/simmerling are your only option for 131
Very nice professor, knows what he's talking about and can be interesting at times. Attendance is mandatory, and his homeworks aren't too bad. Tests are straightforward, just make sure you do actually study. I didn't do that well (B) because I was very busy and couldn't study as much as I should have. Also don't make stupid mistakes check your work
Not a big fan. He's certainly charismatic and a nice guy, but he's not a clear or effective professor. He tries to make processes overly simplified when in reality half the lecture has no idea what he's doing. exams are difficult and tricky, watch out for silly mistakes tho. final will feature some repetitious questions from prac exam.
Kind of just read off the slides. Makes some jokes during lecture every now and then.
Lecture is okay-not the most interesting but not too bad either. His explanations aren't the best, but you can tell he really tries. Homework and exmas are generally easy. He's very approachable and easy to talk to. Would recommend reading before lecture because a lot of his clicker questions and slides come right out of the textbook.
Well, it's a chemistry class, what more is there to say. He's an ok professor. I learned mostly from youtube and webassign.
People judge him a little too harshly. Overall a good professor.
Lacey is a great professor if you read the textbook in addition to going to lecture. His exam reviews are helpful.
pretty good prof.. he is better than the other chem lecturers by far. And really cares about the student. easy to approach
Professor Lacey really keeps his word. He is one of the most respectable professors on campus. I think he is the best chemistry teacher I had so far. Make sure you do all the work given and READ THE TEXTBOOK.
he's the best chem 131 teacher by far, he notes are helpful
Lacey is a good not great chem professor. He just reads off the slides during lecture, the only reason i went was for clicker questions. His exams are a bit tricky but some questions are exactly the same as old exams. If you get 60s on ur exams and do all your smartworks you will get atleast a C+ (I know from experience) lol
He is a pretty good professor. His tests are fair and only ask questions of what he taught in class. Overall it was a good class
Lecture notes are online. He's nice, understanding, and helpful. He's good at explaining the concepts and he's the least boring out of all of the professors.
Great professor, long live.
He is my favorite teacher out of the three that I had this year ! (simmerling, and Jiang Jong Jia) He is very helpful and explains whatever you have problems with after the lecture. He stays late usually during the week for office hours so definitely go there if you are not doing well. Only negative is he gives alot of homework.
tests are whatever but all the chem131 professors talk about something that are not related to the lecture. many people don't get the point. he gives you ALOT of hws.
Really helpful professor and really approachable. Definitely cares about his students and puts in the time to make sure they understand the material. If you do the work and pay attention in lecture, you will get a good grade.
Good Teacher - made the class interesting and tests seemed pretty fair although the final was kinda difficult since it was cumulative. OVERALL! Lacey was one of the best Chem lecturers I've had so far
best chem prof. by far
Worst class of my life. You spend hours on ALEKS weekly, literally hours. Then you spend hours reading your text book and studying. You will feel like you know everything to pass the exam and you will FAIL miserably. If you didn't come from a private school or were in chem club at your previous school, this class will be very disappointing for you.
This class isn't easy. HW (ALEKS) is VERY time-consuming and also not reflective of questions you will see on exams (I spent 70+ hours on it this semester in total). Workshops were useless. Exams are tricky. Study, study, study, and maybe you can get a B!
Roy Lacey is the best lecturer in this course. Very entertaining and keeps the class engaging. His test questions are fair and reflect the clicker questions he gives in class. If only he taught the whole course and not just a 1/3 of the lectures
Chemistry can be a very difficult subject, but Roy Lacey is definitely the best professor in the Chemistry department. All the others are dreadful and can barely speak English. I HIGHLY recommend all students to consistently do the ALEKS assignments. It will significantly help reinforce your knowledge for the exams. Tough course so don't slack off.
Lacey is, hands down, THE BEST CHEM PROF I HAVE EVER HAD. He's so crystal clear, gives you relatable examples for every topic he covers, and just overall does an excellent job teaching this course. His clicker questions do count as quizzes, but once you analyze the question and reason out your answer, they're easy. MAKE SURE YOU TAKE 131 WITH HIM!!
This class was very difficult but Prof. Lacey is definitely the best choice for a teacher. He is understanding and will help you understand chemistry better.
Really difficult class if you do not have an interest in science. Requires hours of additional work and the curve is disgusting. Speaks really slowly, and consistently shushes the class.
CHE 131 is a difficult course, but out of the rest of professors who lecture this course, he's the best out of all of them. Although he goes slow, he is clear and helpful in understanding what he does. And like everyone else said, you must do ALEKS. It is time consuming, so plan to complete it ASAP rather than leaving it to the last minute.
He is a great professor and a really cool guy. We didn't quite finish all the material but he was calm about it. Textbook was really helpful, at least for me.
The guy might be the best chemistry professor at Stony Brook. Extremely clear with his explanations, lets the class know what is important and what's not. Extremely approachable. Ask him a simple question he will give you a 5 minute explanation to make sure you understand whats going on. Pay attention in lecture, do the hw, do the old exams= A
Very nice guy. Goes into great detail when explaining material. Very passionate about Chemistry. Attend lecture often, practice prior exams and an A is very likely.
The class itself might be hard but R. Lacey is a great prof...he actually remembered me outside of class! Very nice and willing to help if you ask
This professor makes the class really easy and interesting. His slides are really helpful and you can easily understandable. Just pay attention in the class because if you miss one lecture you will be confused for the future lectures.
He's nice but not the easy
Dr. Lacy is one of the best professors I have encountered so far at Stony Brook. He is crystal clear in his explanations of difficult chemistry problems and concepts, and also has a great sense of humor. Yes the exams can be tricky, but if you go to lecture, do the practice exams, and use the book to clear up misunderstandings you will be fine.
Though it was hard to pay attention to him during lectures, I want to focus on how helpful he is outside of class when you reach out. Hard class, yes, but he's there for you. He's been more than understanding when I came to him with personal problems hindering my success in his class. He was more than fair to me. Truly cares about his students.
Lacey is a great professor. He explains things clearly and is always very willing to help. He's kind and approachable, and overall a pretty cool dude.
This class, in general, is difficult. ALEKS is time consuming and the tests are NOTHING like anything in ALEKS. Clicker questions count towards your overall grade, so show up to class. Do the sample exams and understand the concepts if you want to do well. I did enjoy his lectures, but his powerpoint notes were somewhat confusing.
If you approach him or go to his office hours he will try to help you. He goes into great detail when trying to explain something to you but much of the time he answers a different question that what you asked. Lectures go very slow, sometimes he can't get through the lesson in one class and then gets behind. Tests are all multiple choice.
Tests are difficult. You must put in effort- read the textbook, use your resources, spend time on ALEKS (which is extremely time consuming on its own, but still very helpful), and do the practice questions. Lectures were dry & I always found it hard to pay attention. Bring a printout of the notes to class for ease and try your best on the clickers.
CHE131 is your basic Stony Brook intro class: tough. The material, now looking back at it, was doable. If you do the practice exams, keep up with ALEKS hw, rewatch ECHOs and go to lecture, you'll do great. A little tutoring won't kill you either. He speaks clearly and gives good examples about what he's talking about. Expect clicker questions
Speaks very slow so its easy to keep up, but even if you do your ALEKS and study a decent amount, the tests are hard enough to make sure you get a good amount wrong. Not impossible to get an A, but you need to put in the work.
This professor was pretty helpful and he knows his stuff, he is really good at keeping your attention.
I want Jiangyong Jia back! Prof. Lacey is decent professor but he's not clear and doesn't explain anything.
He is really slow, I liked JJ better but he is willing to help you if you desire it. You have to reach out though, and the problem with that is most freshmen are too scared to ask for help. Don't be that person.
He explains things so well! You actually understand chemistry! He also is funny sometimes, and makes the lectures bearable. He'll give you more time for clicker questions if you speak up. Go to his reviews! They will help you pass!
Do Aleks. Study For tests. Textbook is not necessary. If there are specifics you're not sure about use google or youtube. A.
Good class but you have to study
Very excited to be teaching what he is teaching, does get behind at times though because he explains everything over and over
There is absolutely no teaching involved outside of reading and Aleks, which by the way doesn't let you review your old HW until you completely finish the new stuff. The lectures and homework seem like they're taken from two separate classes when material is skimmed over this way.
The professor is a good teacher. I kinda wish classes were longer because it takes a lot of time to understand what's being explained.
To be honest he is a great professor but for some reason I feel as if this class is somehow set for students to do poorly no matter how hard they try. I witnessed students retaking the course this semester still not doing well and it is because of the grading system. Also be prepared to do A LOT of homework and study your notes daily!
Roy Lacey is a pretty good professor. He dumbs concepts down so that students that are not too good with chemistry can understand. I personally don't think the course in general is that difficult. However, it is rather time consuming because of ALEKS and other readings you have to do. He is available before and after lectures for questions.
Prof Lacey is great. He explains the concepts pretty well. He goes over clicker questions all the time. He takes things slowly though, so we'd often run out of time before the slides ended. His test was not too difficult. Just do ALEKS and Connect and you should be fine!
Rough course, a lot of homework but most of the work is learnable. Hard to prepare for test, but Lacey is one of the better professors.
He tries to make it easier to understand. But he is one of those professors that just talk and talk throughout the whole lecture. We never ended up finishing the lesson for the day because he talked that much. You'll learn through him but you will just suffer while you do.
My favorite quote from him that I'll never forget "HWA HAHAHAHA HWA AHAHAH Ah ahahah ha" His laugh is hilarious. Makes chemistry interesting. Very good personality. Compared to the other professors he brings in some life into the lecture room. Other CHE 131 professors are so bland and boring. But ma man Lacey knows how to lighten up the room.
Lacey was a good professor. Out of all the 3 professors for CHE 131, he was the one that explained everything well and clearly.
ALEKS and CONNECT feel like there is tooo many useless unnecessary stuff. Sometimes, it is a waste of time Teachings are good
Good Professor. Caring and knowledgeable.
Ladies and Gentlemen (key sentence), he was definitely my favorite lecturer for che131
Lacey is a great guy, clear lectures, always doing review sessions on his own time to help out students, and really funny! Hes an endearing guy and is pretty good at explaining things. Likes to give clicker quizzes at the beginning of lectures so look out for that, but hed great and always willing to help students. Recommended!
He does cover ( in my opinion) the hardest part of the course. But he is slow and good and explaining things. He is also super funny. Just do the ALEKS and the Connect, even if they are completely irrelevant sometimes.
It's hard to rate Prof. Lacey without talking about the class itself, but he is definitely the best of the 3 professors who teach this class. Easiest to understand, best at explanations, best lectures, funniest, etc. The class itself is a lot of work, attendance isn't mandatory but there are clicker questions there that count towards your grade.
Professor Lacey is definitely a good professor. The class in itself is hard especially if its the first science course you're taking at stony brook. Study really hard for the tests, sign up for tutoring, and do everything you can. I had a tutor and studied and was one question away from an A. The class is doable.
I struggled in class and email professor Lacey for help and to schedule an appointment to meet and never got back to with any of my emails. Even if my emails were asking about school work he never responded. Honestly would not take him again. To anyone else you enjoyed him good for you
Such a funny professor, his lectures are great and his slide shows are very helpful! Don't skip class, his clicker questions can hurt your grade if you do.
Very descriptive
He was the better of the 3 professors for Gen Chem 1. He runs a review session during the semester that is helpful. Hes pretty clear once you get used to lectures, and is available for help if you need it. Funny, decent lecturer, just difficult material that wasnt dumbed down enough for me
great professor and knows how to teach. Great review session that was much more helpful than other prof's lectures. The grade I received was of my own failure to do the ALEKS hw. It's long and tedious but it works wonders.
Good professor, the best out of the 3 who teach 131. Review his lectures, review the clickers, and youll do fine. Plus hes humorous and isnt outright boring. Also gives a final review.
Tests arent the easiest but if you really study the notes and practice tests youll do fine. I recommend making a chegg account to get through the aleks hw (literally the worst part of the class). He rushes through clicker questions so make sure you dont miss any. My class had a curve so dont stress too much about your grade.
Professor Lacey is a good professor. He is able to make students understand the knowledge easily and effectively.
This professor is the worst of the 3 for CHE131. His lectures are so slow paced, it takes him a full 5 minutes to say one full sentence. He never finishes the lecture slides and is not engaging whatsoever. He tries his best to explain concepts but strays away from the point. Study hard or get ready to fail his test.
He irritates me. He made me feel like I was a bad-behaved 3rd grader.
He was the 2nd best CHE131 professor after Jia. He's pretty engaging in lecture. However, his explanations are kind of hard to follow. He complicates problems a little bit.
Lacey's style of teaching is slow and methodical, and took some time getting used to. He's funny, nice and seemed to really enjoy the material he teaches. Once I got used to his teaching style, I enjoyed having him as my professor. His material was the most difficult of the three professors and # of clicker questions increased, so don't miss class.
Does not do a good job explaining material. Often spends too much time on one topic which puts us behind. ALEKS is extremely rough but if you stay on top of it you should be fine. Tests are fine if you do the practice tests and keep up with ALEKS.
Roy is honestly one of the nicest professors I've met so far. He is very passionate about chemistry, I could tell from his lectures. However, sometimes the lectures felt scattered and slightly disorganized, as he has many diagrams and models in addition to lectures that don't necessarily align with the concept or help us understand.
He is a really nice person but his during his lectures he skips around the slides and does not explain in a coherent manner. He also uses 3 websites for hw which is ridiculous. I would say to not take his class but there are a lot of ways you can teach yourself the material.
He went slow, but not too slow. He cover question in detail and makes sure everyone understand the material before moving on. He a solid chemistry teacher and is willing to go the extra mile for students by hosting pre-exam reviews outside of class and in class. He really does care about chemistry, teaching and his students.
Prof Lacey is a great professor and you can tell that he really cares about his students and their progress in the class. He makes time to explain concepts that people get wrong on the clicker questions. However, he does very descriptive and usually longer lectures that go over the online time limit so the video will automatically cut out.
Professor Dr. Mr. Roy Lacey, the GOAT. He is truly one of a kind, and he teaches somewhat with passion. In all seriousness, he does go slowly, has 30 slide lectures which he never finishes, and will skip through some. He doesn't go in depth at times, which can lead to some confusion. Out of the three CHE131 professors, he falls a bit short of JJ.
He speaks in a very scattered manner and lacks knowledge in technology. He struggles with using clicker and fumbles with the computer constantly. He speaks over the online lecture time and lets himslef get cut off every time. He expects students to understand every concept he teaches yet does not do a sufficeint job in explaining to begin with.
expectations for this course are too high. I think professors forget this is an intro-level chem course. most science courses at SBU are pretty much designed for you to fail. there is no reason as to why things like ALEKS or PEARSON weigh less than 5% of your grade, which means doing good on those barely helps your grade. science at SBU is terrible
Prof Lacey is kind and passionate about chemistry however a lot of material is not covered in class and what is covered in class usually isn't on tests. For CHE131 in general, ALEKS is an extremely frustrating and difficult system. It is discouraging when things should be "crystal clear" or "not difficult at all" when many students are struggling
Prof. Lacey is nice but I did not find his lecturing style conducive to learning. He sloppily and awkwardly moves through the lecture slides and lectures are borderline unbearably unengaging. There are two required websites for homework. The Aleks, the most arduous of the two was unbearable. Respectfully, I found the lectures useless.
Professor Lacey is such a sweet man, but I think there is a great disconnect between the lectures, the ALEKS, the Pearson, and ultimately what is on the test. I think there needs to be more organization, and more focus on what we need to know instead of branching off into sub-topics that we are not tested on.
A lot of the reviews on this are kind of crazy lol. He only put things on the test discussed in class everyone was just distracted in groupme and didn't pay attention. The HW isn't that bad just need to be patient and read the explanations to what you did wrong thoroughly. Watch the reviews for exam, practice, office hours. Best way to get an A.
He's not the best lecturer, but his expectations are reasonable. The exams are related to what he taught. For those crazy comments, you better stop chatting in Groupme every time when there's a lecture and expects people to give you answers instead of learning it yourself. There's a good curve for this course, you just need to put in effort.
Bad at giving lectures, meaning you absolutely NEED to read the textbook material to have any clue what you are doing in the class. Has an unorganized way of going through the slides and isn't familiar with the technology, so time is often wasted in the lecture. Often explains concepts not in the simplest way and proceeds to say "its simple".
The only reason I did well in his part of the course was because I took AP chem and knew most of the concepts already. His lectures were awful and very hard to pay attention in. Read the textbook, do the hw, watch videos, and go to amarantes office hours to help you understand the material bc he makes it very confusing.
Had to watch through Echo Livestream, and it was hard to understand when he talked. Did not do the best job in explaining material. For the clicker questions, he was ok in explaining the answers, but for the most part he just showed what the work was. Sometimes rambled when talking
This man is so good at teaching, he gives the step to the math problems in the best way possible. The only people that say he's bad are the ones that aren't paying attention and aren't actually solving the clicker questions. He is very easygoing and understanding.
Awful, rushes through clicker questions... doesn't explain anything well. The only reason I did well is because I had to put in the time and teach myself the course through Youtube. Really wish stony brook cared more about how good their professors are at actually teaching.
This professor does not engage the students. You cannot learn anything because he will ask a questing, paue for a second, and then answer it.
Talks extremely slowly and always includes extra words for no reason. Rushes through clickers.
Mans has more extra words to say than the actual content of the lesson itself. "So the basic idea is that.." "That's the basic idea behind it." "intuitively", "enhanced intution" He also often makes mistakes.
talks slower than a turtle which makes it so hard to literally stay awake. Talks about the most useless things, rather than content itself. I would prefer Jia over him.
He talks and teaches so slowly that I stopped paying attention in lectures. If you just read the lecture slides and the textbook and watch YouTube videos on the topic, you can get a good grade in this class.
Horrible professor, I would never take this class ever again with him. I tried emailing him around five times, and I only received one email back out of the five after a week. I had to contact the coordinator just for a simple question. unbelievable.
Not much to report, he got the job done. Nothing spectacular. Read and Study for CHE 131 you will need it!! very test heavy. If you nuke more than 1 test your grade will SUFFER.
I prefer Prof Lacey to Prof Jia by far, he talks very slow but I appreciated this as I could have more time to understand what was going on. The homeworks for this class were brutally long and I ended up getting very behind very quickly. We also ended up behind in lecture and our final exam covered topics we didn't go over in lecture!!
took the time to explain the content since he taught the more conceptual topics, but wouldn't finish the slides on time for that reason. he can teach and he's funny tho! make sure you read the txtbk, take notes, + do any other work due before lecture to get a better understanding, very easy to fall behind in this class. 3 exams + final are curved.
I would choose Lacey over Jia any day. Lacey does talk a lot and often includes unnecessary words, but he does explain the context of the lecture more thoroughly than Jia. He speaks slow which can bore you, but pay attention and read the textbook and the class is an easy A. However, homework is excruciatingly long.
You MUST get good grades on the exams (3 midterms + final), that's the bulk of your final average. The curve helps immensely but you're better off watching youtube videos and doing the practice tests than listening to his lectures. The TAs help more than Lacey, so ask questions during recitation. Also, the homeworks are way too time consuming.
Lacey can be slow, but his thorough explanations are worth it. Supplement lectures with the textbook and YouTube videos. unstuckstudy is also a great study tool. Nail those exams - they're key to your grade.
Professor Lacey is a great teacher. He breaks down the content for you and wants you to pass. He is a very slow talker compared to Jia and doesn't finish the slides. BUT, if you strive to pay attention, then you will grasp the things you need to know. He is quite passionate about what he teaches.
Prof Lacey clearly cares about what he's teaching and wants his students to understand the chemistry and not just memorize it. He speaks much slower than JJ and most times doesn't finish the slides, but he explains in much more depth than JJ does. In my opinion, I'd rather Lacey.
Lacey talks more slower than Jia but he goes more in depth with his explanations which is very helpful. Very caring and cracks jokes from time to time.
He's like if Niel de Grasse Tyson and Helen Keller were combined. Talks slower than my grandma and gives 30 seconds for clicker questions. JJ is 2x better
He's very interested in Chemistry and you can tell, but his lectures are SO SLOW but very comprehensive. I honestly just did the clickers and I was fine. He does review sessions before tests, which are helpful probably for other people. Better than Jia by FAR.
che131 as a whole was a whole job. in order to pass you have to stay on top of readings and constantly drill practice questions. jia is better at explaining calculations, but lacey is better at explaining conceptual stuff by far. its easy to get bored out of your mind while listening to him, but if you actually lock in its pretty useful.
He is very knowledgeable and passionate about chemistry and it shows lol. He is great at explaining concepts but often takes a long time since his lectures are like 30 slides each. He does some practice problems on the spot which is extremely useful. Attend class, review lectures after class, and do a lot of practice and you should be fine.
Great guy but extremely slow talker you fall asleep and get bored during his lectures. It is online and can be lived streamed so take a nap while you can. He puts the clicker questions for 0.5 seconds and expects you to get the right answer.
He's a very chill guy, but he almost never finishes the lectures in time. They can get very boring and makes it difficult to stay engaged. He's puts up clicker questions at the last minute and gives you very little time answer them. Just read the textbook and do a lot of practice problems and you'll be fine for the tests.
You can tell he cares about his students and his lectures were a lot easier to follow than jias. Sometimes they do get very boring tho and they feel very dragged out. Just watch that organic chemistry tutor and make sure you do practice problems and you should be fine
Prof. Lacey is great at explaining concepts throughout lecture, but he talks very slowly and never finishes the slide deck, which makes going to lecture really boring. He also spontaneously puts up clickers and they're only up for a short time before he closes them, which makes it hard to actually solve the problem at times.
I would say he's not a terrible teacher but he does talk way too slow. Attendance isn't really mandatory, he uses clickers to see if you attended class or not. But the course itself is very hard, I would suggest looking at past recent exams for practice for the final or exams 1,2,3. They're really easy to find online and definitely helped a lot!
While it's clear that Roy Lacey knows what he's teaching and he tries to be thorough, sometimes he talks himself in circles which ends up confusing students in the end. Very strong conceptual understanding of topics, but in lectures with 50+ slides, we'd typically only get through about 20.
Aside from clearly teaching chem for many years and still not being able to pronounce carbon correctly he is an alright teacher and his class isn't to hard. He doesn't give enough time for us to solve the online clickers but its whatever. Be aware of the clickers they are horrendous.
i would rather live outside in a cardboard box than ever have to take his class again. Get prepared to read a whole 3 sentences during an entire lecture because wow he talks SO slow. The worst part, he talks slow but doesn't explain anything. Also good luck trying to get in touch with him.. you'll have to go to TAs who have no idea what their doing
I stopped wearing my seatbelt driving to school because I wanted to die before making it to his class. (I AM JOKING!!)
The problem with Lacey is that he just rambles on throughout the lecture and it doesn't feel like he is actually interacting with us. The Clickers are also just ridiculous. They should not be graded based on correctness for new material that we are just learning. You'll learn a lot more from the textbook and online videos.
Be prepared to teach yourself. The organic chemistry teacher and GPT will do wonders in teaching you this "intro" class, but don't worry, it's not impossible to get an A if you put in work. a lot of work, but that's just college, right?
While attendance is not mandatory, you must complete clicker questions (from home or the lecture hall). Take notes on the lectures, complete all of the homework assignments, and do as many practice problems as possible. If not, you will have a very hard time in this class. Professor is nice and always willing to meet during office hours to review.
I had some issues when I took 131. I brought him a doctor's note. He worked with me to schedule makeups, and said he'd take the note into account when assigning final grade. He is incredibly kind--I suggest going to office hours and actually talking to him. Also, there are plenty of resources to reinforce what you don't understand from lecture.
I had him for the second half of the semester. I didn't like the first professor at all but omg was I wrong cause this guy was worse. You can barely understand him and he does clickers on what he barely even talked about in past lecture. Read the textbooks and do the homework honestly if you want to have a chance.
He is absolutely wonderful. kind, caring, and honest, and incredibly generous with his time. He's a great lecturer and very observant, always noticing when students need clarification or support.
The GOAT. Posts previous exams to help you study not just the topics but question types, clearly explains the things that will be on the exam, and removes questions upon emailing him after the exam. The only negative thing is that clickers/attendance counts towards your final grade but lectures are offered online so it's not that bad.
Great professor! He always explains material thoroughly and holds review sessions for every exam.
Professor Lacy is super funny. He makes the class interesting to listen to and does a good job explaining potentially complicated topics. He is always making jokes and although it can seem a little deprecating towards students, it's always in a lighthearted manor, and he takes the time to thoroughly explain concepts in different ways.
Very good explainer of topics and overall very chill person.
This class in general requires a lot of reading to succeed. You will need to do the homework quizzes before class if you want to do good on the clickers. I thought Lacey was good at explaining things but he did make a lot of little mistakes on the clickers which could be annoying.
Overall, he is not that bad professor. But he speaks too slowly, and rarely finishes the slides. Additionally, his explanation is sometimes clear but sometimes unclear. So, if I have choices with another professor, I would not choose his class.
definitely read beforehand as he rambles a bit... but he's funny, and good as an intro prof!
