Great professor! Classes are engaging. Take home tests make you remember everything you learned. He is very passionate about what he teaches and makes it fun!
prof gives interesting lectures however outside reading is tedious, boring, and there is tons of it
No Comments
Obviously loves the subject matter. Lectures are quite engaging... you'll want to go to class so you don't miss out on discussions. Tests/readings are not overly difficult. Highly recommend.
he is a fun but informing teacher, while teaching what he loves, he makes it very interesting. You need to keep up with reading and class discussions. No tests, we just have one final project.Hes great, and easygoing
Passionate and knowledgeable about the subject. Allowed too many off-topic subjects to derail his lectures, overall great class and much learned
Good professor, but the tests he gives out are very tricky worded and hard to pass.
Great Prof. Easy to get along with. Tough, but fair, liked talking about the passion he shares for Anthropology
Great lectures, not mandatory, but helpful when a test comes along. Tests can be tricky. They were online. Lots of questions from the lectures. Loved his love for anthropology.
Good teacher. Really passionate and smart. I enjoyed being in his class.
Professor Mitchell is very helpful if you show up to class and participate. He believes in take home tests and I would HIGHLY encourage anyone who needs to take Anth 250 to take it with him. He gives test questions during lectures so SHOW UP. His passion and teaching got me interested in field of Anthropology.
Exceptional teaching skills- he has a very effective way of connecting with students. I got much more out of his class than I anticipated. I am definitely going to take more classes with him. Very willing to help students, passionate about his topics and the class, and genuinely cares about students. I wish more profs had his teaching abilities.
Awesome professor. He was funny, and very passionate about the subject matter. Seemed down to earth, chill, and always had a Dr. Pepper in hand. Strongly recommend him for everyone. The only problem was the students, everyone was tired at 5:30 understandably.
Professor Mitchell is seasoned professional and bring his experience into every lecture, using the latest examples to illustrate key concepts with a comedic edge. To be engaging and entertaining for a large and diverse student class of is no small feat! No comment on appearance other than...Travelocity Gnome!
Awesome Professor, really helpful and outgoing. If you have to take the class I recommend you take it with him.
Great Professor. The class was easy going but you must read the book, and take notes. The tests are straight from your notes and book. Will definitely take him again.
He is a good prof. He uses the full class time for his lecture so if you like to get out of class early don't count on it. He is very nice and very good at answering any questions or e-mails.
Entertaining, good powerpoint presentations of material, tests are straight forward and very easy if you've attended class (he likes to drop lots of hints to help students pass). I'd take him again.
attendance is not mandatory but it is helpful. study sessions with the T.A. are the best tools to use for the test. do the 3 homework and 3 test and you will do fine.
The professor is thorough in his lectures and explains any questions the students may have. Attendance is not mandatory, although it is best to show up because some of the test questions are based off of information given in class.
He is awesome. We had class outside today just because it was sunny. Very helpful. The class was discussion based. Very understanding and not overly strict. If you work hard for him he will work hard for you. This was my favorite class. He looks kind of like a pirate in a good way.
This class was highly informative and the professor kept the lectures relevant and interesting. The essay are poorly defined and cover too much information without enough clarity or room for exploration. Other than that, I would recommend the class to anyone interested in Anthropology or needs a GER.
Easy to listen to and retain information. I enjoyed this class.
This was my favorite class this semester. I liked that you had to be interactive. He got me to go to the Achorage Museum!
Prof. Mitchell doesn't require attendance, but there are some test questions that are only discussed in class. He really does want people to succeed in class, and mentions when to pay extra attention because a test question may be part of what hes about to cover. Would take any class with this instructor!
This is the second class I've taken with this instructor. He uses powerpoint to share the information and puts the powerpoint up as part of the class materials. It makes it easier to take the notes, otherwise there would be more difficult to keep up with notes. He makes learning fun.
Dr. Mitchell is a great professor. He is helpful at pinpointing what material is important and at making the classroom atmosphere welcoming and fun. He is easy to listen to and does a good job at getting the students interested in the material.
I have to say, hands down, Roy is one of my favorite professors at UAA. I'm a bit biased, being an Cultural Anthropology major, but I always enjoy his classes. The 490 class did require a lot of reading, but overall the information was eye-opening. Prof. Mitchell always has little anecdotes to every class as well, keeps me interested!
Roy is an excellent professor ? definitely my favourite. He has a great sense of humour and is full of information and stories. He really knows his stuff and clearly has a passion for what he's doing. Exams are challenging but rewarding. He also has a mighty beard, and one day he wore a kilt to class. Highly recommended.
Professor Mitchell is awesome! I was told to take this class with someone else but I'm glad it didn't work out. He did an amazing job and if you show up to class, have the books, and put in a tiny bit of effort you will pass for sure!
He is a good professor.
He is a great professor! He loves what he does and it shows. This class is jam packed with information, and though the text can be dry, Professor Mitchell makes it fun and interesting! Was glad to have this class with him. I learned so much.
Great professor, truly loves what he does! Very interesting classes, just show up, take notes, do everything on time and you will feel like a better person after taking this class!
He's awesome, totally helpful and friendly can't wait to take another class with him
A great teacher and a great guy all around. Likable, approachable, gives good lectures. Do the work and you're fine.
He is funny and extremely approachable. All of his tests are online, including the final. The subject can be a bit dry, but he does his best to make it interesting. Overall, he's a pretty decent professor.
This guy is funny, easy going, class is not manditory, but I would suggest going to each class. I learned so many interesting things about Alaska Natives. He knows a lot about the cultures, and does a great job at keeping the class activly listening. LOL Great class. Take it. No homework, just 5 tests, multipul choice, online. Easy.
My first impression was a dull class, but over the course of several class meetings it picked up! Dr. Mitchell explains things thoroughly and has a great sense of humor. Exams are online; attend class and review sessions and you should be set!
Class is only mandatory because once a week he has a quick write assignment where you write a short paragraph about something you learned that week. All the exams are on blackboard and you have lots of time to do them. The professor is very understanding and flexible.
He made anthropology grab your attention and he really made you think about every subject that we would discuss in class. Also he was was very helpful if we ever had a question and because he was so open it made it so much easier to learn!!He's definitely one of my top 5 favorite professors!
Cool teacher, tests are open book and online, and the final project is fun and easy!! Only somewhat difficult part are the two papers.
I thought this class was going to be boring but it turned out to be very interesting. Professor Mitchell made it interesting just by his lectures. The overall assignments were very doable. He was very generous on complexity and due dates. I would definitely recommend taking Professor Mitchell's classes. Thanks for a great semester.
Fun class, very intresting. Mitchell made the class fun. Assigments where fun. Test a bit long but all online open book. I would take him agian. Highly recomended.
Interesting and helpful. Grading policy is very fair.
Dr. Mitchell is a great teacher that gave me a reason to be interested in Natives of Alaska when I had no previous interest.
I really enjoyed this class. Professor Mitchel makes anthropology very accessible. He is not afraid to take the class on tangents, and proved consistently knowledgeable in responding to even the most obscure questions. I took the same class from another professor at the same school and didn't succeed. Professor Mitchel made all the difference.
He is a very good professor. He explains things very well. And answers questions when people ask to the best of his knowledge. He also gives hints to questions on the tests.
Prof. Mitchell is great! Tests are long but open book so no complaints here. If I didn't catch something in the lectures, I would learn it in the exams looking it up. This was my fun class compared to others . Wasn't looking fwd to proj. but actually enjoyed working on it. Totally recommend this class!
Great Professor, he really gets into the material. Makes a point of answering questions but is still pretty good about keeping class on schedule. He focus's more on learning the material and being able to understand it and attempts to show other cultures in a way that makes sense.
Great professor! I'd take another course from him for sure.
I recommend his class, Good teacher, emphasises learning the material and understanding of concepts
TEACHER WAS FOCUSED ON TEACHING. NOT STAYING WITHIN SOME PREDETERMINED STANDARDS. HE DOESNT WASTE TIME IN CLASS TAKING TESTS, SO TESTS ARE OPEN BOOK THROUGH BLACKBOARD. DONT THINK THIS MAKES IT EASY, HIS QUESTIONS ARE VERY SPECIFIC, AND I PROBABLY LEARNED MORE LOOKING UP THE ANSWERS TO THE TEST THAN I ABSORBED THE FIRST TIME AROUND. FUN&RECOMMENDED
Textbooks aren't necessary, but additional readings provided online and class attendance are needed to pass the 5 exams. Also there are 5 map quizzes which are approx 1 letter grade. Extra credit is available. Recommend highly.
By far this has been the best experience I've had at UAA thus far. Professor Mitchell has a mastery of the subject matter, a personal interest in the Native Alaskan culture, and an expansive experential foundation which he shares in each and every lecture he facilitates. This is the type of instructor who really inspires students!
It was a easy class to take. The professor tests were tricky. However, if you attend class, he will drop hints for the test answers.
The instructor is clearly passionate about Anthropology and was a knowledgeable instructor. He wanted us to learn and was always willing to answer questions. I really enjoyed the class and would definately take another class with this instructor in the future if the opportunity arrose.
I took his summer course, and i thought it was going to be a nightmare b/c of the pace we were going to go, but he was so HELPFUL and really worked out. His tests are done at home.you can print it out and ask the questiosn directly and he will help. Just attend classes to get hints towards what to expect on your up coming tests. No HW at all
I really enjoyed this class. Professor Mitchell had a great sense of humor, the tests were a bit tricky but if you went to class you would do fine. If I get a chance to take this professor again, I will.
The class was a continuous round table guided discussion regarding the required reading, of which there was quite a lot. The class was fantastic, but you need to keep up on a lot of reading which ranges from difficult (graduate level, etc) to entertaining (Athabaskan storytelling)
One of the most interesting and knowledgeable professors I've ever worked with.
Instructor VERY enthusiastic about teaching this class. Very helpful and approachable. I would take another class of his.
Great teacher and an interesting class.
Friendly and extremely open to discussion. Understands how to teach a general-ed class. Be warned: the take-home tests are deceptively difficult. Paying attention in lectures is the best strategy.
This was an interesting class. I would certainly go to the lectures or you will be very lost. Go to the study sessions before exams. Let me say that again. Go to the study sessions before exams. Prof. Mitchell is very friendly and knowledgeable:)
Great class, attendance is not mandatory but advised, he gives test questions in class with answers. Study sessions very helpful too!
He is a fantastic teacher.
Easy class
Dr. Mitchell is wonderful. He's got a great sense of humor, and explains everything very clearly. I took his class in the fall, and on Halloween he came in dressed as Gandalf!!! But besides his jokes... He is an awesome teacher and I would highly recommend him.
Great class, I learned a lot. I didn't know a whole lot about the topic and I can honestly say I was sad on the days I had to miss class. Very helpful and even gives exam answers out in lecture. Go to the lecture, go to the study sessions, show interest, and you'll do great
He is a great teacher. Class attendance is very crucial to getting a good grade, as well as keeping up with the textbook. I learned quite a bit!
I would take this class again professor Mitchell keeps the class interesting and fun! All of the tests are taken online at home and doing it together with classmates is accepted! Map quizzes are done which is an easy 20 points per test if you memorize it fast.
This course isn't "easy" persay, but he takes his time explaining everything to the class. The Exams are wicked hard but if you go to the study sessions you should be ok!
Mitchell is by far the best instructor I have ever had. He is passionate about anthropology and takes an active interest in his students learning. He keeps the subjects interesting and encourages his students to ask questions. He also encourages his students to have study sessions together and would go to some sessions as well to help his students.
Professor Mitchell is very lively, funny and knowledgable about his subjects. He cares about if his students are learning/ understanding the material. His class is definitely not one to skip!
Great class, 2nd course with this professor, very helpful and entertaining with the material.
Dr. Mitchel is a great teacher i have ever had. He is very helpful and care about student success. I will recommand him
He had us make our own artifact and do a presentation about it, I found it was a fun an interesting way to learn.
Pretty easy-going and joking professor. Easy to approach and genuinely likes what he teaches, which makes the class all the better. One of the better professors I've had
Very interesting class. I learn a lot from this professor.. Making our own artifact for show and tell is very fun. Recommend it for others to try and take the class :)
He Loves what he teaches and it shows. Test questions are tricky , so I highly recommend going to the study lessons you will not regret it. I would recommend this class and this professor.
Took Natives of Alaska with this professor and it was an amazing class. He is very enthusiastic about teaching and it is very obvious he loves what he does. I am recommending this class and would most definitely take another class with this professor.
Prof. Mitchell is passionate about his field. He is very informative and knows his material well ( which translates in to a live interesting class environment. He encourages students to study together. LOVED his style and how he really wants his students to be interested and know history. Enjoyed every minute of it.
As an international student, anthropology was not easy class for me. I felt difficult in understanding the textbook. However, Prof Mitchell was very helpful and his lecture made me understand the mainstream of each chapter! Also, his after-class study session was grateful!
I hands down, flat out loved his energy, instruction, insight, knowledge, and love for Anthropology. I had no interest in it before this class but if time would have allowed, I would have taken all his other Anthro classes. We desperately need more professors like him who exude the such passion an truly want to transfer it to their students.
Great teacher! He knows a lot of his teachings and also compares to Alaska Natives. He is a linguistic Anthropologist and clearly loves his job. Definitely take this class! He puts tests online and attendance isn't mandatory but I would recommend going to get his notes.
Professor Mitchell is one of those teachers who loves the subject he teaches with a passion, and you can't help but get caught up in his energy and enthusiasm. It makes a class so much more enjoyable! The subject was very interesting and there were opportunities for open discussion every class. Definitely a must take professor!
The best class I took all summer. Love his passion for Anthro. makes the class that much better.
get you very motivated, has great personality and funny guy~ one of the best teachers at UAA
I've taken a couple of classes of Roy's and he is, hands down, one of the best professors at UAA. He's easy to talk to, super helpful, and a lot of fun. And, I even learned a lot in his class! :-)
I dreaded having to take this class. However, Professor Mitchell didn't just make it tolerable for me but turned the subject into something I would LOVE to learn more about! His class wasn't difficult, but I did the homework, read the readings, studied... so really--as is the case with ALL other classes--the grade you get is the grade you work for.
Excellent class. Very interesting. Professor was very knowledgeable but there is so much information crammed into a short amount of time so he talks VERY fast. Hard to take notes, also he's a little unorganized, couldn't remember what he told which class. But overall excellent class!
Awesome class. The professor provides so much information in a way that is easy to comprehend.
Really intelligent guy! Found all of his lectures very engaging and fun. Tests were hard though! He likes to word them in a way that can be tricky. Wish they could have been shorter as well. 100 questions each they would take me hours to complete. Even with study groups, found myself barely scraping by to get a B.
I learned so much in this class and The way you thought helped me remember everything. I'll remember the information from this class when I'm 80!
I took this as a GER but enjoyed it so much I considered a shift in major. Show up, do the work and you will pass. He is funny and his lectures are genuinely enjoyable. I highly recommend this class to everybody, it changes how you see the world.
Great teacher, very knowledgeable on the subject. Test are long but not timed and they are online.
Great class! This is the second time I've taken a class with Roy Mitchell. He is one of my favorite professors at UAA. The tests are hard and long but if you go to class and the review sessions they are more doable. The tests are online and not timed, which is nice!
I enjoy this class and learn a lot.
A realist who is worth taking whether you enjoy ANTH or are looking to fill the space.
Great class and great teacher. Very informative. I loved it!
Tough, educating and relevant. Really enjoyed class.
You should attend class, but not necessary. His tests were online as were all of his slides. He was a great lecturer- very clear. He has an easy final project, I put in a lot of effort, but it wasn't necessary. Really enjoyable class.
Attend class, review the slides, and go to the test review sessions and you'll be happy with your grade. Professor is extremely knowledgeable on the subjects he teaches. Only complaint is I wish he had a course packet printed and available in the bookstore instead of just posting the reading assignments on blackboard (there was a lot).
The tests are long& tough, but during his lectures he goes in depth into the materials & all the tests are online. He's overall a great teacher. I would definitely take a class with him again.
awesome opossum
Class is all lecture. Easy in-class quizzes and teat are on-line
It was a great class and the teacher is a good man. With one of my essays, I forgot to add my reference page and still got a 90 on it. For those needing an anthropology class, I would definitely recommend this awesome teacher
The online exams are based off the lectures in class; be sure to pay attention to anything he emphasizes on during the lecture. While the class was interesting and relatively easy, the final paper was a bit tricky to write. There wasn't a clear-cut guideline or rubric to refer to while writing the assignment. Don't be afraid to ask for help.
Overall his class followed his syllabus. Teacher knew the field and tried to make it interesting and I enjoyed the class.
Great professor, knows the topic, enjoys teaching this topic, 10 page term paper, 5 exams-select true statements, overall great class. Eye opening!
I have learned from Professor Roy Mitchell in Anthropology class, he's very effective, efficient, precise & very helpful and made me realize how I could push myself to be an effective learner & time manager, it was hard yet I enjoyed the challenges, I proved to myself that I could go beyond what I thought I was capable, I am truly grateful to him.
Show up to class and pay attention to the lectures! The tests are easy if you do- and he lets you collaborate on the tests!
This man is a genius. Absolutely brilliant. He gives the most interesting lectures and he is extremely easy to get along with. He has the hair and beard of a god and his energetic personality makes the class very entertaining . Has an answer for every question you ask him. Easily the best anthropology teacher at UAA, I would love to be his padawan
I love Roy Mitchell; one of my favorite professors; very cool. He has a lot of great stories!
Great professor who really enjoys and knows the subject he teaches. His lectures were always engaging and funny. The tests are incredibly easy, he lets everyone work on them together. There were always review sessions before the test where the class would get together and go over confusing questions. I would recommend taking his class to anyone.
He had a great sense of humor with made the class very entertaining. I love all his comments about the "tardis" and references to Star Wars and Star Trek as well as other iconic shows during lectures. He is great at emails and answering questions you have and does so very promptly. Not an Anthropology major, but I really did enjoy his class.
Roy is a great professor - incredibly knowledgable and insightful. Easily one of the best professors I've ever had. Lectures are interesting, the readings aren't bad, and he structures the class to help students learn (review sessions, online tests, etc). He obviously knows a lot about Alaska native culture - it is inspirational.
Amazing class just as I expected.
As expected, awesome class.
I'm sad to see one of my favorite professors leave UAA. I know for a fact that all of his students respected him at the very least and definitely had fun in his classroom. I took two courses with him and he was helpful and understanding in each.
The tests are a bit tough, but they are online and open bookopen note so just make sure you leave yourself enough time to look up the answers (many of them are in his power points which he posts online). You don't NEED to go to class for an A but he is entertaining and will give test answers. Learned a lot from him!
Best teacher in the Anthropology department. He gives you first hand knowledge of AK culture and he makes it interesting. His tests are hard and if you dont take notes or go to class you will not know how to answer the test questions. Worth taking a class with him.
Grade consists of online exams and one final project which was very straightforward. Easy to get an A if you follow directions, pay attention to POWER POINTS and reading the text also helps a lot too. Interesting prof who really cares about his students learning something.
Professor Mitchell is awesome! I've taken 2 classes with him so far and will be taking a third this spring. You may pass his class if you miss a lot, but it will be much more difficult than necessary and he does tell you test questions during lectures. Also, his lectures are interesting and fun.
He is am amazing professor and has one of the most enjoyable classes I have ever taken. He expects you to think, read and do your work; but it is well worth it. His lectures are entertaining and he has a passion for the topic that is beyond belief. I am looking for more of his classes to take.
Good professor, gives good lectures, knows what he's talking about and actually cares about it. Gives some of the test answers in the lectures and puts the notes from class onto blackboard so students will be able to use it while taking the exam.
He was really an amazing professor. Definitely one of my favorites. He made it very easy to learn and ask questions. I grew to understand and appreciate Alaska Natives and their heritage. You can tell that the professor spent a lot of time with the people he teaches about and there's not enough words to express gratitude.
Great professor, very passionate about this topic and very easy to understand and follow during lecture. Tests aren't difficult at all, most of them are online and open note/book. Highly recommend!!!
Professor Mitchell is AWESOME! By far the best professor I've ever had. He is super smart, very informative, funny/kind/understanding, incredibly interesting, and he clearly loves what he teaches, which makes learning from him a great experience. His exams will be very difficult if you miss a lot of class, don't take notes or read your text.
You miss a lot of extra credit points and hints regarding the test if you skip the lecture.
Favorite clad of the semester
The greatest takeaway I got from this class is too try and empathize with other ethnicities and not be quick to pass judgement.
His class has 5 take-home multiple answer tests (very hard but all the answers are in his power points and lectures), 5 map quizzes (you have to do some memorizing but otherwise easy) and a 10-page term paper. LOTS of EC. Good class, though not super engaging. He reads pretty much straight off the PowerPoint which gets a little old. Pretty easy A.
Definitely take his class to fulfilled the social sciences GERs. I learned so much about Alaska and Alaska Natives. Very inspirational and knowledgeable of the subjects he teaches.
Mr. Mitchell is really funny and has a great knowledge base about all things Alaska. 5 take home tests that are easy as long as you take good notes. Large term paper at the end of the semester (make sure to get started on that a month before its due).
Professor Mitchell is amazing. This is my second class I've taken from him, and I have learned so much from both. His lectures keep you interested, his grading is fair, and he is passionate about what he teaches. Read the text, print the PowerPoint, and show up to class to pass! Thank you Professor Mitchell! I will be taking your classes again!
Good lectures. Cares about students gaining the class knowledge.
Dr. Mitchell is an exceptional professor who is knowledgeable in the subject matter of the course. The class is mostly lecture but he has a real passion about what it is he's talking about. He is a fair grader for the two papers we had over the semester and the three online tests we were allowed to take advantage of numerous resources to get an A.
Really great teacher loved the lectures, they were the best when the class would have conversations about the power point. Hoping to take another one of his classes
Outstanding Teacher Great Class
This was a very stress-less class that allows you to easily understand a lot about Anthropology you never knew and the fact you can work with others will help you make it through the class. For beginners of anthropology this class and the teacher Roy Mitchell I highly recommend as you will start learning better on societies, and different cultures.
GREAT CLASS! Thank you, Prof. Mitchell!
Professor Roy has been doing this a long time and just cares that you walk away from the class learning something. It was super refreshing by not having to stress over the exams (all online with PLENTY of time) he is passionate about teaching and it really shows. He is always willing to answer your questions. I learned A LOT!
This was my first Introduction to Anthropology, ever. Professor Mitchell made this experience entertaining, informative, and enjoyable. Highly recommend this professor for any of his Anthropology courses, and would take the class again myself.
Professor Roy is literally such a character, but in the best way! From the long braid to the tucked in septum ring, his class is full of quirky but important and valueable info. Make sure to take notes, always. or you won't pass the tests (which are open book.) Also, RECORD the lectures/pull up the blackboard slides, he talks pretty fast
Amazing instructor. Great lectures, very knowledgeable. This is the third class I have taken with him and I would take any more that he teaches if possible. His classes have been an inspiration to me personally and encouraged my pursuit of anthropology.
This guy gave great lectures and the required textbook was incredibly informative. Although it was a 200 level class, there was ample information available to make it equivalent to a 400 level if you wanted more info, but he only grades at the level of the course.
I took professor Mitchell's Linguistic Anthropology course in the spring of 2019. I came back here to write this today because I still think about the things Roy has talked about in class. Who he is as a person is also truly inspiring in a pedagogical sense. He is so interesting to listen to, entertaining, and incredibly wise.
Mans changed my life fr
Lots of lectures that often go off topic since he is happy to answer questions and share additional info- sometimes extra recorded lectures as a result. Tests have a confusing way of being graded depending on the kind of question, but he does his best to explain and it just took a while to understand. Research paper and 5 tests. 5 quizzes.
Professor Mitchell is truly a great professor who is passionate about his topics and cares about his students. Attending lectures and taking notes is imperative to doing well on tests, but all tests are open book and available to do on your own time. He gets off topic in lectures but only because he is so excited to go in detail on questions.
Dr. Mitchell is the best! The online recorded lectures were very informative and insightful. I learned a lot from taking his class and he provided great feedback on my writing.
Professor Mitchell's class is quite engaging, with lectures that sometimes go off on interesting tangents. While the tests can be a bit tricky, the content is valuable, and the optional textbook is not strictly necessary. unstuck study was a great study companion for the open-book exams.
