He is not helpful at all. This class is supposed to be for people who do not know anythign about chemistry, but he acts like we are supposed to know everything. He is not patient and basically just reads the powerpoint so it is pretty boting too. I think chemistry students need chemistry to be energetic and hands on. If you are like me he is no
I started to take his class over the summer but had to drop before the first quiz bc the class was awful. His powerpoints come straight from the book so not only do you have to attend class to listen to him read the powerpoints word for word, but you have to go back and read the entire chapter yourself to study. Do NOT recommend him.
Dropped before first quiz b/c he was so boring. notes were WORD FOR WORD from the book, never answered questions, talked fast and was not very loud. RUN SCREAMING WITH YOUR ARMS FLAILING IN THE AIR!
I passed with a C. The class was hard but I took it over summer & the comments below are from summer. I wouldn't suggest anyone take a summer Chem course unless they HAVE to & I HAD to. Too much in too little time, but I started off badly or I prob. could have gotten a B. Nice prof. A little strict. Chem is difficult no matter who you take.
Not only is the book a better teacher, it also has a better personality. He is so boring, he makes a corpse look animated! He reads straight from his notes(which he won't give copies of to the class), speaks in a monotone, and is BORING. He reads - he does not teach. BCC's science dept. needs to fire him, and fast. He's terrible...
Roy, my man, you blow! And you suck! It's amazing how you just stand in front of the class and read your silly notes....try looking up at your students on occasion... you'll see the look of despair in their eyes, as they realize that you just might be the WORST professor in North America. A&P students need a real teacher, not a parrot.
Very dull teacher, we didnt get a syllabus until the 4th week of classes, IN THE SHORT SUMMER TERM!! His quizzes sucked, he couldnt even give u a clear grading scale on the quizzes, though lets you leave when you want.
if it wasn't for him, i would have taken chemistry 1045 in the fall again...he is very helpful... and his tests vary from 10 questions to 35... he uses some of the questions from the hwk on the tests.....he only needs to improve on his clothing.. and maybe get a grill. and jesus chain...
This is a teach yourself class. He wants to help but doen't do a very good job. He is not teacher material. He doen't take attendence. For someone who is clueless in chm and looking for a teacher with great teaching techniques go elswhere.
he's very helpful if you'll just approach him...entertains questions and answers and explain it quite clearly.. he also have a good sense of humor...some people might be a little hard in understanding the way he speaks because of his english accent but it's actually pretty cool and makes his class more interesting
I'm sure HE knows what he's talking about, but he does a horrible job at getting that information across to the students. Not one person has an A in the class at the moment. He will skim over power points, and every now and then, (should the computer not be working) he will complete half of a problem on the board. Don't waste your money.
He is nice as a person but has a hard time teaching and explaining. He never uses his own lectures; he only uses the power point from the book. He tries to put the powerpoints in his own words then ends up explaining it wrong. He has given us formulas with completely wrong numbers. He stumbles in his speech and says "uhhhhh" a lot.
He is ok, when he wants to. He sometimes get slick at the mouth and "thinks" he knows everything. But he is getting better than last term..........just a little bit.
he knows about the subject and he enjoys teaching and helping out but he just cant really teach all that well. he goes very fast, he slows down when you ask but still im passing this class by miricle. if you take his class pay close attention and study hard
Great proffesor, knows his subject. His test require alot of studying and no extra credit! hw equals almost the same as the tests, so if u do ok on the hw you will pass. Nice guy and will gladly help u anytime!! I would reccomened him to anyone who wants to learn n work hard! Got a B so far!
You better read before you get to class because sometimes he confuses you and if you haven't read previously, you won't get it. Lots of studying is required for Chemistry in general.
MUST read the chapters and go to class. tests are based off the hw and reviews in class, just the #s change. No Xtra Credit. Very nice, helpful man, but keeps chem as a filter class. You will not understand lecture unless you read the chapter. It's just a rule.
Chemistry is just a hard subject but he is always there to answer your questions and hes very helpful. As long as you do your homework and reviews then you can pass his tests. Its not that difficult but you do need to study!
Professor Pocknee is not a teacher. He struggles with explanations, and would rather read his powerpoints. If you can, take another professor.
Professor Pocknee expects students to know the material FRONT and BACK. You can't just read the book and do the practice probs and expect to ace the class, you need to have a great working konwledge of the material and an excellent grasp on the concepts. I am one of two w/ an A so far and fighting for my life to keep it. HE'S A VERY HARD PROF!!!
Dont listen to all these poor comments! Chemistry is really hard, but Professor Pocknee explains it in a way we can relate to, giving great analogys! Passing is easy and to earn an A u just have to study a little more. Trust me, there are no easy A's in chemistry!! Professor Pocknee is one of a kind and I am so thankful I had him as my professor!
If this is your first chem class, I suggest you take a different Professor. It's not that he's a bad teacher, but his teaching style is not to my liking. He basically just reads the power point slides. The H.W. is really helpful though, SO DO IT! His test come directly from it. He is always available if you need extra help as well.
He's not that bad. Just do all the homeworks and you will do good on the tests. Some of the questions on the tests are the same ones on the homework. I don't go to class except for homework review and tests and I've got an A average. He will help you if you ask... he seems rude but he can be pretty nice. And he gives extra credit!
Prof is not good at explaining all things, but is willing to help you out. Gives a large extra credit quiz in the middle of the semester. Let us use the book once, but no formula sheets. I expect to get an A in his class.
I like Prof. Pocknee. He does move a bit fast with the lecture, but if you study & read the textbook you will do fine. He gives 7 tests, and homework goes with each test. He also gave us an extra credit quiz. So there are plenty of opportunities to accumulate points.
Chemistry is not easy, but Prof. Pocknee will always make himself available to help his students - in fact, he stresses that "the students that do well ask for help." The real question is, do you want to learn the material or do you want an easy A - if you want an easy A go elsewhere and good luck taking 2000 level chemistry at uni.

Great professor, knows his chem, little bit of communication barrier at times since it's pretty hard to learn the foundations of chem1. Moves at a rapid pace, but will definitely help you. He's VERY fair, as are his tests, you must study. I got an A+, I read the book though & went to his office hours. Doesn't like slackers Nice & very helpful man.
Excellent professor, very helpfull if you show interest fot the course. Do all your homework and you will do good in the exams. Homeworks are very important for him, and it has the same value as the tests.
let me tell you something he is not a good teacher at all... he only focuses on his power points and never takes time to write on the board something very important on chemistry class!!! DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!!!!
HE IS AWESOME! Chemistry is such a hard subject to begin with so any professor that you take will not be able to make it any easier. He makes it so clear and easy, he will give up his lunch to tutor you and cares very much that you understand his passion for science. He uses powerpoints for his lectures and attendance isn't mandatory, but it helps!
CHEM IS INDEED A TOUGH SUBJECT AND TAKING IT WITH HIM ONLY MAKES IT TOUGHER. I DO NOT RECOMMEND HIM IF YOU KNOW NOTHING ABOUT CHEMISTRY. HE MOVES REALLY FAST. OFFERS LOTS OF OFFICE HOURS BUT IT DOESNT MATTER IF HE EXPLAINS LIKE YOU SHOULD ALREADY KNOW WHATS GOIN ON!!!
His class was such a waste of time! He talks with his eyes closed and mumbles so its hard not too fall asleep. I took him over the summer and I learned absolutely NOTHING. His class is easy because the homework he gives is pretty much what the tests are but with different numbers. All the answers to the homework are in the library.
DONT TAKE HIM!!!....If you can learn things on your own then feel free to take a risk. You really have to read on your own if you are going to keep up with his class.
For CHM1045L he's ok. Sometimes he's helpful and points out little errors, and other times he's just a plain jerk! However, he doesn't expect more than the Lab Manual and has a cool British accent. Overall, an ok professor.
He's really not that bad of a teacher, i have him now. Sure, its not an easy subject but he is willing to help. You have to put in effort if you want to pass. He likes if you to go to his office hours. He is very fair in grading. i hope to pass his class with an A.
HE was great do the hoimework and you will pass every one of the tests!!!
hardly elaborates on any of the material, so its hard for you to understand. His tests are tough and doesnt give you much of a review. If your not good with learning a subject on your own, this isnt the class for you. He really requires you to read from the text, which doesnt teach you much. DO NOT TAKE HIM
This was the hardest Professor i have ever had to deal with. sometimes He skims over the material and was rude at times when asked questions. I had to study extremely hard to pass with a B+, He can be helpful though if you go to His office hours. many of the students failed and some withdraw, take Him if you like a challenge or have no other choic
Pocknee really not all that bad.He uses a lot of the same questions from the homework on the exams & gives an extra quiz worth 15 points on your final grade. He's always available to tutoring
If you are trying to become a medical professional and you can't get at least a B in this class, look for another career! Pay attention, study and get your grade. I did and got a 98%. It?s possible; you ACTUALLY have to put in some time and effort. As far as Professor Pocknee, he is awesome; just ask for help, he is always willing.
This class is SO easy. I never went to class for longer than 30 minutes and got a B+ ( only because chem is my worst subject everr ). He doesnt care about attendance either. Just google the answers to the homework and then read them over and you'll pass the tests with flying colors. SOO EASY . Only hard part was the final study and youll be fine!
Dr. Pocknee is truly a great teacher. He really cares about the students and if you have any questions he will spend the time to make sure you understand it completely. Make appointments to meet in his office it's worth the time. Oh and for you Monty Python fans watch for his lines from the movies and shows.
He's ok. He not a bad teacher, he is there if you need help. His test are similar to the homework. I felt like I learned what I needed to know for the class.
I wonder how much broward College pays this guy to read a powerpoint....
The tests are just like the homework, but are too short. One wrong answer and you're done. He spends almost no time going through any material, except for a meager too-little-too-late review day. For an accelerated summer class, his only lasts for about a quarter of the time allotted. If you're looking for a lecture, he's a waste of time and money.
He teaches like it's a refresher course rather than hearing it for the first time. He doesn't mind explaining things but his accent doesn't help either.
College is about a prof going over material and you the student applying it when you study. Great teacher always willing to answer questions and explain any confusions. Gives HW and 1 extra credit quiz. Plenty of chances to score well. So take advantage and do well on HW. Tests are not too complicated like some other science classes.
I have him for ChemLab currently I dont have an issue purse but it is November 2nd and I have absolutely NO IDEA how Im doing in his class. We had a midterm but never received the grades and he waits until the end of the semester to collect your journals that contain all your work. I wouldnt take him and he doesnt like when you ask him questions.
The class is difficult but I knew that going in, lot's of studying and reviewing. He is always willing to answer questions and tutor you. It's true he teaches through PowerPoint but he also only asks you learn what you have to. Homework and tests weren't hard and extra credit was helpful.
This teacher was very good. I hated chemistry in high school and was not very good at it. Mr Pocknee is very clear.Teaches from powerpoints. Provide Extra Credits and the final is not worth that much i failed the finals and still got an A. You just have to work hard. Im not going to tell you its going to be easy but you can get an A.
Great Teacher, but can be kind of boring though he teaches from powerpoints.
He never tells you what you have on the class. He could lost one of your tests and you will never even know. You need to keep on track and keep of asking him where your grades are even tho he dosen't like it. Not helpfull at all.
great professor not an easy class however most of the exam questions came from homework, he reads from the PowerPoint and somewhat explains however he makes himself available after class and office hours if help is needed.
He's a good professor with a nice British accent. The class is nothing but memorization and calculations. He lets you use a calculator. If you study regularly you'll be fine.
Lets just say half the class has already dropped the course. . judge for yourself folks. . he can finish reading one chapter 100+ PowerPoint slide in one class. .If you don't have a problem teaching yourself Chemistry then he is great!! Final is cumulative. . and did I mention he only reads PowerPoint. zZzZzZz
Dr. Pocknee is a very good professor. show up to class and pay attention to everything he says you will pass. very clear in his lectures and if you ask questions he will answer all of them until you understand. Do his homework helps alot when taking all the tests. Chm isnt an easy class so study on your own and definitely go to the lab. take him!
Class started out with 25 students.. Only 8 students are left... Can even do basic math has to refer answers in order to complete math workouts.. Very misleading will tell you one things and when u get the paper is another... Does not give enough time to write notes before he changes his slides
I don't understand why Broward has these professors he doesn't use D2ls grading systems makes the test worth so many points so if your not a good test taker and u can't teach yourself don't take him!!! Your grade will be low I currently have a C but he is horrible at explaining and reads powerpoints he skips lessons and says he's read it! HORRIBLE
this professor is really bad. during lectures he sounds as if he is half asleep very boring. I have spent 50 hours in LRC I still have a Hard time on the test. so I wont LIE and say if you try you will pass. he once told me that people that pass his class are those that have already taken CHEM or from another country!! HE IS NO GOOD STAY AWAY!
You must be kidding! I took him for CHEM1032 and got an A easily. I studied hard and practiced calculations constantly but it is not that difficult, if you apply yourself. The subject is very interesting and it is what you make of it!
Lots of reading and homework. Lectures do not reflect what is on the test and do not prepare you for the next level of chemistry or the workforce. I would recommend taking someone else. I got an A but had to teach myyaelf and I have a 4.0 GPA
If you really want to pass this class you gotta read on your own. He will help you though if you don't understand.
He is sarcastic and thinks that he is too good to teach. He tells us that he used to be a dean at Broward College but got fired so now hes teaching. He doesnt care if you pass or fail and is just doing this for a paycheck. Stay away.
Roy Pocknee is doing his time. He doesn't care about his students. He says everyone passes because he is angry he was demoted. Very poor Chemistry knowledge and a poor personality. I wonder who hired him to this institution. We can learn online way better. His Power-point is copied and he just reads it
He's a good choice for chemistry and knows his stuff. I find chemistry to be extremely difficult, so I had to get a tutor. I don't think that is a reflection on the professor. He makes himself available and he is very patient with students. He also gives extra credit (yay!). I liked him enough to take him again for the 2nd sequence.
He's not a terrible teacher. He answers your questions and pauses the "lesson" to answer the question and work it out on the board. However, he reads straight from the PowerPoint and he erases the work off of the board after he is done working out the problem. It's easy to fall asleep in his class and you're better off teaching yourself!! :/
He does not teach, he only reads off the powerpoint. You can do that yourself. I had to teach myself the whole subject and it was so hard. Only take him if you're a genius in chem because you will struggle. P.S. the tests are the homework. I don't mean to be rude, but just don't take him.
okay so he is nice in class but I once emailed him to see if I could do anything about my grade and he responded in such a disrespectful way that wasn't necessary. SO, if u take this class, you better hope to get an A in everything because he isn't very helpful. His homeworks are online but the tests are difficult. It is nothing like the homework.
Lots of notes- its helpful to write from the power-points (which he goes through during the class) and practice the calculations. Do your homework, study and pay attention in his lectures and you will pass.
No point in showing up to class. He literally reads the slides... never shows you how to do the calculations. Just reads! highly recommend you do not take this professor. If you want to learn Chemistry, choose someone else.
Ok, Pocknee isn't a horrible guy. Although, if your in this class you might as well prepare to teach yourself. He provides slides in class that are also available online. But when he reads it in class you'll want to fall asleep. He also goes very fast with his lecture. Prepare to spend lots of time after class just for his work.
The way he teaches is very boring, he just goes through power point slides in class. I learned more by going through the slides myself at home. The final grade is 35% homework, which are some quizzes you can print and take online, and 65% tests, which are very hard. I know chemistry is a difficult subject, but he makes it more difficult.
WORST PROFESSOR ! I asked a simple question and received the worst respond. He went on to let me know he wasnt my servant? I never mentioned for him to do anything just to let me know when the final is because of the virus and nothing was updated . I never once made it seem like i wanted him to be your servant . Its your job to inform your studen
Honestly, you wont really learn with him. If you do your homework and understand the concept on your own, you should do well on the test. A lot of self studying on your part.
Worst professor I have ever encountered. Literally reads off of the powerpoint and rushes through his lectures. Don't even bother asking him a question, I can guarantee that it will not be answered "nicely". Do not take him unless you are ready to teach yourself.
I suck at chemistry, found his lectures boring because all he did was read from a PowerPoint. He tried to engage us but we were all too bored to care. He did tried his best. He was great to me because my grandpa had die and he was so understanding that he tried his best to help me make up for the work i miss and give me extra times. Great person!
He does not really teach and expects you to already know a lot of stuff, such as ions. Get ready to read the book and teach yourself most of the information. Also when you ask questions, don't expect them to be answered in straight forward way; sometimes he even answers by essentially restating your question.
I took CHM1045 during summer A (6 weeks long) online section. Your have to learn by yourself; there is not video lecture. You have to learn two units per week, and also you have to take an exam per week; some of these exams are proctored. You only interact with Knewton Alta which is a courseware.
This man is horrible! He is definately not an easy A! He replies to emails when he gets ready so if you need help on an assignment(mind you my class was online) your better off reaching out to other classmates because this professor dosent seem to care if you pass or fail he definately does this job only for a check. He is also very sarcastic!RUNNN!
Take him you wont be sorry! Always apply yourself, should you fall short be sincere and optimistic.
His lectures are extremely boring and does not go in depth. He talks forever and never really talk or interacts with students besides the ones sitting in front of him. If you want to learn chemistry he is not the one for you. He stares at his computer during tests so hint hint. If you don't care bout chem take him and finesse.
Personally, I took him online so I cant speak for having him in person but for me he was great! Chemistry is already a hard subject but he really helped me out and was willing to round my grade up at the end of the semester which really saved me.
This professor during this pandemic gave up on his students. He didn' teach chemistry he reviewed as if we have been doing this our whole life. He read off the PowerPoint verbatim and did not even breakdown all the math equations. I am currently teaching myself. When you ask to many questions he gets rude because he cant finish in time. DONT DO IT!
If you are really good at chem take him, if not be prepared to teach yourself. Youtube was my teacher. His test were average you just have to study hard and learn the homework problems cause sometimes it was on the exam. (not all but some) Only one extra credit really boring he reads off powerpoints. He likes questions but never goes in depth. bad!
Hes a pretty easy teacher. Homeworks is graded and has multiple attempts. I am currently doing remote learning for this class due to covid. I never used the book, so wouldnt get it. If you ask him questions, he explains. I do use YouTube, for extra practice. If you are a visual learner, wouldnt take him. He reads off his PowerPoints thats it
Very boring, would not take again. Only reads off PowerPoints. he isn't a bad professor just know you'll be teaching yourself. class was during covid. only grades hw and exams. study the hw too!. If you don't apply yourself then you'll fail. It's a struggle but if your willing to constantly study then I think it will be okay. 3 chances on the HW
Took the CHM 1032 class during COVID. Professor isn't very helpful, like at all. If you have any questions outside of class or need help with material he's just rude and doesn't try to understand you. Been asking for extra help all semester since I hadn't taken chem in a few years and he just says that if you do the HW you should understand.
Absolutely fine lad. He's not a very good professor, but his class is easy. I took him for CHM1045 and CHM1046 and got an A in both because the quizzes are almost exactly the same as the tests. Just giving him a 5 because I want his rating to be higher.
Be prepared to teach yourself in this class. He is not a very helpful teacher and expects you to know a lot of things that he is supposed to teach. Also not very good at answering questions, and will restate your question as an answer. He also gives the attitude of , you should already know that, when asking him questions.
He is not the best teacher. But he isnt the worst either. You will have to take time to learn the material outside of class because he reads off power-points. His class is boring, but copy as much notes as you can. Other than that, the homework is not too much and the test are very similar to it. Read the chapter in the test book to past tests.
Let me start off by saying this if you are planning to take this professor's class, DO NOT. I beg of you if you find out you have him for chemistry, switch to another professor. He doesn't really teach you, he reads off of a PowerPoint and doesn't explain. You will struggle, ask him for help, he will tell you to review the powerpoint.
Pocknee is NOT for everyone; he just rushes through presentations. Are you really comfortable with chem? You good at teaching yourself multiple chapters? Take him. Do you ask questions during class? Dont have a great chem background? PLEASE do not take him. The final was nothing like the study guide; honorlock on all exams. You've been warned.
Seems like a really nice guy outside of being a professor, however this class was extremely challenging, only 11 homework assignments but there were 5 exams, a midterm and a final. Doesn't matter if you get 100% on all of the homework if you get a C or below on his exams you're pretty much screwed. Beware if Chemistry is not your strong suit.
He said we are behind in the course one day, two classes later he said we where the furthest of all his classes and are ahead. then the next class he read one chapter to us then assigned 3 more as self teaching then made an exam on it due the next day. He also refused to give holidays off to us and would make tests due on a holiday and not care.
Very slow speaking when covering the PPTS rushes through examples with no explanation. He won't answer questions with a direct explained answer he will go off on a tangent about something else, and then answer your question with a reworded version of your question. VERY test heavy, studyguid/HW NOTHING like the test. You WILL have to teach yourself
He does not teach, he just read from a power point. You're at least able to look up answers for the hw & get 3 chances for every hw. Exams were %65 of your grade. There is extra credit but its proctored, which is stupid. He doesn't explain anything you ask him so expect to teach yourself. You don't need the text book, I never got it & I got an A.
Prof. Pocknee has a very soothing voice - which is very unfortunate in the early AM, especially while he's reading off powerpoints. Giving your full attention during lectures and studying is especially important for your grade. You will be teaching yourself. Use the flashcards!!
I honestly have no clue how I passed this class, but it was not because of Prof. Pocknee. He is an average teacher, but the classes and lectures were so boring since all he was doing was going over a ppt that was attached on D2L anyways. I basically had to teach myself everything. Please take advantage of the extra credit opportunity: a life saver.
Please do not take this professor for chm 1032. This man is the worst, is not helpful at all. Terrible for online learning. Take someone else trust me
Professor is very rude and disrespectful. I would not take a class w him again and he's very old.
Teaching style is just reading the powerpoints. Be prepared to teach yourself. He's available during his office hours and after class; but don't bother because he always cuts you off and doesn't even answer your question. Exams have typos, multiple correct answers, and questions from chapters not yet reviewed. Overall is just kind of mean.
To say this dude is boring is an understatement. He's drier than a KFC biscuit and watching paint dry would get my pulse running faster than his lectures. He just reads off his 100+ slide powerpoint. Absolutely senile :). Skipped like half his classes, no attendance at all. He asks for participation then cuts you off when you say something.
Professor Pocknee is a very rude person. ive taken his class, and let me tell you if you miss an assignment, HE WILL NOT LET YOU REDO IT, nor will he let you have any extra credit opportunities. He speaks over you, when you try to explain things to him, and is low-key insulting. Please I advise you. do not take his class.
I had Prof Pocknee for online Chem 1032 online. The online course I took was pretty difficult because it is your own pace but things are still due on a due date and I was very lost. He was available if you needed help. Study for your tests, and take advantage of you discussions, extra credit assignments and reach out to your study buddies.
This class was very boring just make sure you study for exams because they are all on honorlock. There are lots of homework assignments just finish before the due date he will not let you redo them. I thankfully didn't have any issues with him. I would not recommend taking this class
Terrible assignment description, makes d2l impossible to navigate assignments with due dates, hard to pass an online class when half the battle is looking for a due date.
Not sure why so many people don't like him. He's pretty ok all around, responding to emails in a timely manner and not grading super strict. Willing to help you if you don't understand something in the class, even willing to go in private zoom meetings to help you understand what you got wrong on exams. Overall 8/10
wish i could rate him a 0, incredibly rude even on emails. never satisfied with and grades harshly. I've taken more advanced chem classes and had no issue with the grading. literally take ANYONE else. don't waste your time or money on this one.
