He is forgetful. He is very critical. He expects you to be a professional writer. He grades extremely difficult. Would not take him again. Stay away.
He's the type to keep to himself, but any lecture he gives is ALWAYS good. Good character. He really does CARE. Tough class though. If I would've known these things about him I would have never took this class. Well I did, and if you are a Good and Professional writer prior to 1302, then I recommend! Nice guy; realistic; thin; gray.
Very hard teacher grades very hard. He is easy to understand, but the way he grades you will have to work really hard just to make a C. Take a different teacher if you can.
I went to him for help he tells you what you need in your paper but you will still be graded very hard. I would never take another class from him. Take a different teacher if possible.
His lectures are always interesting, good personality and helpful when you go talk to him during office hours. But his grading is hard, his expectations high, you will be challenged like never before at ACC. Drop rate is very high. Make sure you always read as assigned, there are tons of quizzes.
I always have made A's and B's on my english papers. Not the case with Ruane. He is very critical. His first paper is the most difficult. They get easier but his expectations are too high. Most students papers are below 75
This guy is so freakin hard. his lecture is horrible and you cannot understand a thing unless you are in a english major and you are willing to learn. essays have 1st draft, 2nd draft and revision and his grading is professional essay writing. his research paper can only be submitted once, no drafts, and is graded right away. don't take him, ever.
Super smart huge vocabulary hard to comprehend. Loved listening to him lecture learned alot of new words. BUT grades very hard. Wrote all papers 3 times ea.and I did all papers still recieved a C. Able to go to him for help but still hard to understand because he is so intelligent I think its hard for him to put things in layman terms. HARD WORK!!
What can I say about ruane? Two words EXTREMELY HARD! Even if you are an English major it's extremely difficult to comprehend with this man's lecture close impossible. After hes done talking you'll probably be reluctant to ask questions just because its no use, he'll talk to you as if your a Harvard graduate with a major in english/
what a nightmare. i dropped the class because i want to maintain my 4.0. whatever you do to your papers, it won't be good enough. lucky to get a C. write down everything he says about stories so he can't tell you you're wrong. TAKE NOTES. read the stories because quizzes are a pain. REVISIONS ARE PART OF THE COURSE.
If you want a high dollar education in English at a discount price, this is the guy to take. Revisions are the key to doing well. Critical when grading papers but his feedback is priceless. Meet with him about your papers and you will do well. The most intelligent, thorough and dedicated English professor I've encountered. EXCELLENT LECTURES.
Read all the stories more than once, quizzes ask for minor details. I felt as if he wanted us to regurgitate his interpretations of the stories, very disappointing. I love to write but the way he grades left a bad taste in my mouth. Out of 20+ students only 5 were left. If you're an English major or have lots of time to devote to revisions take him.
He was a great teacher. I actually learned something in this class. It was not at all easy but College is not supposed to be a breeze. He answered all questions and when asked for clarification he would explain without giving the answer. Definitely Hard but worth it.
You will need a device to record the lectures, as the only way to pass the essays is to regurgitate his commentary on each assigned piece. I have yet to achieve an "A" on any essay, usually due to "misreading" and structure. This isn't a hard class, Ruane just makes it difficult under the guise of "teaching [you] how to write". Avoid.
This guy is hard. He WILL push you to your limit but when you get a good grade on a paper it's bc your writing deserves it. Don't quit on him and he won't quit on you. Good educator.
One thing college students need to understand is that not everybody can always make an A in every single class. This is not high school anymore. Only the best of the best will be graduating with a 4.0. Yes his class is hard, but you can actually learn from him. He will push you to your limits and prep you for the rest of your college education.
I would not recommend this instructor at all. His markings on your papers are very confusing; you can't understand what he writes on your papers. He picks the weirdest day to have an office hours for one on one with his students. His lecture is confusing. I took him during the summer and failed; because his way of writing papers are difficult.
He does an excellent job of training you with each assignment building on the last assignment. Though this class was harder than I expected, the writing skills I gained from this one class have helped me in a majority of my other classes.Writing extensively is required for most kinds of classes, so it helps to know how.
Last year in english one I pulled an A easily and helped edit my roommates english two essays. My first paper I got a 75 and that's the best grade so far. He literally said no one has gotten higher than a b this semester. He goes on forever about the stories. Take him only if you do not care about your GPA. Horrible class. Horrible Teacher
EngComp 2, short stories. His discussions are GREAT. Loved getting into these short stories with him. HOWEVER: his work is too hard. Not exaggerating. Rubrics are too structured, no individual thought. Revision process is IMPOSSIBLE,cant read his writing, cant figure out what he wants, even after meeting with him. Made me hate english. Do not take.
Prof Ruane is tough There were times I looked at my grade and wanted to bawl like a baby. My first year back in school after 20+ years and I knew I was going to fail. Not Mr. Ruane. He stood by me. He called me after hours to help me. He was ALWAYS there for us. I MADE AN A Considering Honors English now. Thanks Prof Ruane. Do the work people
By far worst professor i've ever had. Made me rewrite every essay and still didn't receive a good grade after rewriting it. He expects you to write on a senior level. I retook this class in the summer with a different professor and received an A.
I took Mr. Ruane several years ago. He's a tough grader and many students dropped his class because they couldn't keep up. I had him during my first semester back in school after a very long break and after taking his class I never expected college to be easy ever. It was. Everything was easy after this class. I graduated with a 4.0 because of him.
So for more information on this Professor, I would have to say that he is not clear in what he wants in an essay. His lectures are decent and he is up for further discussions, but when it comes to assignments, he is extremely unclear. I would not recommend taking this class. My class had nearly 16 students and by the end only four remained with me.
The professor is unclear with instructions when assigning papers even after asking a couple times to clarify. This class has a high withdraw rate for a reason! There's only one way to write in this class and it's his way. Steer clear from this professor to save you from stress and your GPA.
Very challenging. He is very into English and really want to teach his students. Prof is always there for you, in fact I would recommend go over your assignments with him. It helps a lot. Gives very clear instructions and detailed feedback. Lets you revise all 3 papers. It's important to read the stories more than once or the quizzes will get you.
The class consists of three main papers and a lot of reading. There are daily quizzes on the reading assigned the class before. If you're good at English this class isn't hard, if you are not then avoid the class. His lectures are amazing and he's a great professor. He gives you the option to revise every paper and gives 2-3 pages of feedback.
Great teacher. Instructions for big essays are super clear, really break it down. Lively lectures, & welcomes questions. Gives lots of written feedback on essays, a good thing because you get to revise everything. No mystery about how to improve your grade. Sometimes does extra office hours. Signing up for a lit course next semester.
If you expect easy A this professor is not for you. He is super into his subject and expects you to be as well. Prepare to spend a lot of time working on the papers and revisions. But he doesn't just teach you English, he prepares you for life in the 4 year college and beyond. Nothing will feel impossible if you pass his class. I would take again.
I'm a B- C student in English and I didn't find this class that hard at all. I showed up almost every time, took notes, read the handouts. The stories and discussions are interesting. A couple of people who didn't read or take notes had trouble , but to me everything was straightforward. I revised 2 of my 3 essays and made a B.
Prof. Ruane makes you to be interested in the class and he tries to make students participate. Paying attention to what he says is important and helpful to write the essays. It is a hard class and he is tough grader, but if you need help you can ask him and he will be there for you.
I think professor Ruane has a very straight forward grading and attendance policy. He is very knowledgeable and imparts good lectures. You don't need to be a great writer to pass this class, but you have to be committed. Turn in the assignments, never miss class if there is not a good reason, and always do the revisions. He is always there for you.
When I signed up for this class I expected it to be easy. I love reading and expressing what I have read. The only problem with this teacher was that he was very off topic. He spends like 85% of the class period talking about what we read and 15% on the essay papers in class. In all class periods he done this. confusing. Would write more but noroom
very tough grader. ASK for help. make him tell you EXACTLY what he wants.
I took Professor Ruane for American lit, and I enjoyed the class. Lectures were entertaining and organized. Reading and course work was manageable: two essays, a midterm and a final. From what I could see, everyone who took notes and turned in the papers did fine. Great class! I plan to take the other AmLit survey course with this professor.
A quiz every day. Have to read the material, which should be obvious since it's a literature course. He expects a lot. But if you take good notes, you literally have all you need to write the patters and answer things on the test
Ruane's class is one of the toughest classes I have ever take. I would not recommend this class to anyone needing to take and English course. You only have three papers all semester but be prepared to work! Do not take his class. Wait for another professors class to open up.
He is tough. He is more than just English teacher. I took his Comp II class and now I'm at a 4-year college thanking him for his toughness. Prepare to write. Papers are not long but are hard unless you take extensive notes. Go to his office hours, revise papers, read, show your interest. Take him only if you enjoy challenge. A is possible
Nitpicks every detail of your papers- wording, ideas, quotation choice. Great English professor for Literature/English Majors, not so much for the average student. Failed this class after doing very very well in Comp I. If you take this class keep EVERYTHING as he expects you to turn it all in at the end of the semester
Good course. Learned a lot.
I thought he was a great professor. He was a pretty harsh grader but he gave really great feedback and you got to do revisions on your essays. There were quizzes at every class so be sure to read all stories assigned. I feel like I learned a lot from this class.
This professor is great! He gives clear instructions and we get to revise our papers. His handouts are really useful. We can reach him outside of class and would do his best to help us with our writing. Kind and caring. Get ready to read a lot and show your interest.
Prof. Ruane is very particular; most essays you will revise or rewrite, and it can be tedious--make sure to carefully read through his comments. He is, however, very intelligent & gives good lectures and feedback; if you are an English Major or love writing & are willing to make an effort to improve & don't slack, this class is a good one to take.
I just finished taking 1301, first semester comp. What I liked is that how to make a good grade was no mystery; everything was spelled out. Classes were about practicing to do the papers and the things we read were interesting. We got to revise the first two essays for a higher score. Good professor IMO.
Lectures interesting and good prep for papers. Professor encouraged coming to office hours and glad I did. Grading was same as others. Got to revise. Good class.
I took 1302 dual credit. The stories were good and the papers were specific but not that hard. Everything in class is practice for papers. For the first essay you learn how to do things that stay the same for the other assignments. I made a C on the first one but we got to revise and resubmit, and overall I ended up making an A.
I would never take Professor Ruane again. Seriously, take anyone else. Quizzes every class except for one or two times. Insanely hard grader, but is available during office hours and you get props for going. Unless you are really into literature, I wouldn't take this class.
High workload class, very enjoyable lectures, one on one time is easy to get but necessary for passable essays.
As a Math major I was dreading freshman comp but enjoyed the class. His way of teaching is straightforward and made the concepts easy to absorb. Assignments were specific and came with lots of written instructions. We got to revise the first two essays and resubmit for full credit. Went to office hours twice, which really helped.
There was reading homework almost every session, but that's normal for lit survey classes. Review sessions for midterm and final very helpful. Lots of short reading quizzes but only 2 papers. Lectures were interesting and I Iearned a lot. Overall, course was not difficult and I got a good grade.
Proff. Ruane provided lectures the were boring at times but loaded with information to help you succeed in the class. He has very simple quizzes every class to verify the story is being read. he also handed even "A" papers back with lots of suggestions in order to help students writing improve, this can be frustrating but useful.
I'm not a literature person, but this was a great class. Lectures were clear with no fluff. In this course if you take notes and ask questions, you'll do fine. I don't understand the hard grader comments since a bunch of people made A's on the two papers. Good reviews for midterm and final.
Ruane is a very very tough grader. You basically have to write down everything he says exactly to get good grades on the essays. He expects you to be a professional writer. I've been lucky to get a C. Very nit picky and comments on everything in your essay. Choose a different prof if at all possible.
The stories I read were very odd and a couple I couldnt even tell what was going on. If you miss a day of his class, you will fail the paper. He expects people to be amazing writers. If you dont like short story analysis, dont take this class. He doesnt make it very interesting.
Prepare for small quizzes about reading assignments. Showing up for class and participating are part of your grade-- so speak up when you can to get easy A's for that. He is a very tough grader and expects a lot out of his students. Writing is not very legible so go ask questions! Don't take this professor if writing is not your best subject!
this professor has great lectures BUT is a very tough grader. I normally fair pretty well in writing and for his papers I really had to work. and it was stressful. turns out he was head of the honors English class dept. Go figure. Unfortunately, even though the lectures were great and I participated a lot in class I still struggled to make a B.
IF YOU CARE ABOUT YOUR GPA DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME! He rejects the majority of the papers you turn in even if they are written the way he asks. SAVE YOURSELF.
I really enjoyed the lecture on the short fiction we read. I took this as a summer course so there was back to back writing for everything. The great thing about this prof is he gives you plenty of opportunities to revise and meet up for feedback. Take advantage of office hours whenever you can as well as e-mail communication. He is very responsive
You have to read and take notes for each session of the class, and he goes into more detail of it during the lecture. Short quizzes of the readings each class period; only a midterm and final. The reading is a lot but he can make them more interesting. He ended up giving us all an A for the quizzes portion of our grade. The final saved my grade.
He is a nice man but too tough of a grader! If you are not the best essay writer, DO NOT take him.
HES AWFUL! He expects you to be a professional writer!! & mumbles all the time!!
Its as if he believe his students are Harvard PHD students, for every sentence you write in your essay, when he revised it he writes two more in unreadable writing. I went to him for help after bombing the first paper that I put multiple hours of work and reading into. Thought I crushed it on the revision, nope, still gave me an F. Avoid Ruane.
Prof. Ruane really does want you to succeed, but he also really wants to make you earn your grade. As long as you pay attention to the lectures, analyze the stories carefully, and understand the feedback provided, you WILL succeed. Lectures are clear and useful, and he is extremely helpful in and out of class. Pro-tip: Attend office hours.
Professor Ruane was one of the best I've had so far. Not many writing assignments and he explains in detail how to do them. A friend told me to pay attention to exactly what the assignment asks you to do, and that was great advice. He provides lots of feedback on the essays which definitely helped me improve. Interesting lectures.
Professor Ruane is one of the best professors I have had. He's incredibly thoughtful, sincere, and humane. You will have quizzes for each short story. You will need to take notes. Listen carefully to how he explains how elements in the works establish and demonstrate ideas. Strictly follow the essay guidelines and use exact, clear language.
I took Professor Roy Ruane's English 1302 class a few years ago. He was EXTREMELY TOUGH! However, I learned a lot from him. Professor Ruane is very passionate in his work. He was an amazing teacher who pushed me very hard to succeed! I took another one of his classes right after because I enjoyed learning from him. He was a true inspiration!
If youre not an English major i suggest you pick someone else. Tough grader is an understatement. Three of my friends dropped the class already. Syllabus is 11 pages long, assignments are confusing and getting clarity from him is impossible. If you ask him too many questions he will suggest you just drop the class.
Doesn't clarify things well, really high and ridiculous expectations for assignments as if students should already be these top exceptional writers & not have the slightest errors or else you'll already have so many points off & not pass! then with revisions, he'll still give a low score that won't bump your grade up enough. AVOID THIS PROFESSOR!
This professor is difficult. This class was the hardest core curriculum class that I have taken BUT he does a wonderful job of keeping it interesting. His grading is strict but his experience reveals itself as he guides his students to push themselves to be better writers. Overall, it has been a very rewarding experience.
I had to withdraw his class. He made the essay prompts very difficult. I spent 3 hours to write one paragraph on one essay he assigned us. His grading is very rough as well. I got help on my essay from tutoring and I still got a 64 on the essay.
Unless you are Majoring in English do not take this class. From day 1 we received an 11 page syllabus and given a quiz. Expect a quiz almost every class. You can not be late or it will count against you. Take specific notes on everything that he says. I failed the class despite attending every session, taking notes, and going to the learning lab.
Do not choose him unless you are majoring in English. By the end of the semester, only 5 students were left. However, his lectures are interesting. You will learn a lot. He is very experienced. Make sure to show up on time, else you will fail the quiz. QUIZZES EVERYDAY! VERY Tough grader! Protip: record his lectures, go for help in office hours.
If writing/english is not your strong suit don't take this professor. He grades with very high standards, very difficult to get an A, even with multiple revisions on each paper and feedback. He looks for specific answers and reactions. However, very nice guy, his lectures were easy to follow along with and he was happy to help you with problems.
You will rewrite your paper & he might not even read the revision before you have to write it again. I struggled on the 2nd paper so I spent a lot of time on my revision & even took it to a tutor on campus with a literary degree. The tutor said it had a good thesis & was well supported by textual evidence. Roy read half the intro & said "rewrite".
I never cared about writing in HS but in this class I found out that I can write much better than I thought. The professors explanations of non-obvious things in the stories were interesting. I enjoy reading fiction and writing in general more now.
Good class. Lots of reading, as you might expect. Lectures focus on key ideas-- take notes. Two papers and two exams. Helpful review sessions. Not a hard class.
Professor Ruane is a very nice person but is the. toughest. grader. Ive ever had, which makes class stressful and not fun. Expects nothing but perfection from everyone, despite that this is a core class that were required to take; treats us like were grad students pursuing an Masters in English
American Lit I was a positive experience. Lots of reading, but keeping up and taking notes made the 2 exams and 2 papers pretty easy. Everything for exams and papers was covered in class. Good lectures and the exam review sessions were great.
Professor Ruane was a nice person and all. However, his lectures were extremely boring which makes the class not fun. Not only that but the essays that we were given to write were extremely difficult. Comments a lot on the essays given feedback. Really hard to earn a good grade in the class, you really need to work for it.
Has all of the terrible traits of a typical english teacher. Expects you to write according to his own subjective interpretation of the fiction rather than letting you use literary analysis to write your own. Is a ridiculously hard grader on top of it all who will repeatedly fail you for not perfectly conforming to his standards. Avoid for your gpa
After nine hours of non-stop meticulously writing and revising my first essay and receiving an essay's worth of notes and 75, I felt deeply anxious. But at the end of all of my papers, Ruane always mention that if I had any questions about his grading and notes, that I could come to office hours. In doing so, I received excellent instruction.
If you care about your grade don't bother taking this class. He is constantly changing his mind about what he wants in an essay. He is looking for an excuse to give you anything but an A. He is available in office hours but don't count on the advice he gives you because when it comes to grading he doesn't take it in consideration.
Does not care about his students at all. And literally cant miss one class
don't take his class if you wanna pass
I dropped the class after I received my first paper and completely flunked. All of his feedback was based upon subjective ideas and was too critical, it being the first assignment. One of my friends just got his checklist back after a month, with no paper. By the time I dropped the class, only half of the students were left. Dont take this class.
Professor Ruane is by far one of my favorite teachers at ACC. If you want to get an easy A then do NOT take this class. Professor Ruane cares a lot about literature and he wants you to care a lot about it too. You only write a few papers in class but will spend a lot of time on revisions. This is a great class and very satisfying to pass!
I don't agree with any of these bad reviews. He is willing to work with you if you ASK for help. He wants to help students become better college level writers and gives lots of good feedback. His classes are engaging and he is very knowledgable and open-minded. He is very caring, and is always at office hours. I recommend taking his class!
Good lectures, and not a lot of work: just 2 essays and 2 exams. A friend said that the keys were showing up and taking notes, and she was right. Try office hours; I nailed down most of the points for my papers in those brief conversations. Going to take the other survey course.
Interesting lectures: very into the texts but relates the ideas in what we read to real life. Has made me like to read REAL literature, not just pop fiction like I used to. Very helpful during office hours. The work was the normal stuff, 2 papers, 2 essays. I'm going to take his other survey course. Great professor.
Unless you are a lit major, I highly recommend to stay away from his class. His tests are so unnecesarily difficult, and the essay prompts are ridiculously specific. I felt as if I had wrote the best essay of my life, and still failed. He takes MONTHS to grade essays. Steer clear of Prof Ruane if you care abt your gpa.
It was rough. I like to think of myself as someone who enjoys and is good at English but not with him. I put a lot of work into my essays and I still don't know what grade I got for any of my assignments. His instructions are not only hard to understand, He has 5 different instructions for 1 assignment. Didn't tell me I was failing till too late.
Really long lectures and super tough grader. I would work very hard on my essays and received lots of feedback about how my essays were mixed at best in effectiveness. No matter how hard I worked, it seemed my essays weren't good and this class made me dislike writing.
Professor Ruane is a fantastic teacher that provided excellent feedback and clear/concise course/asgmt criteria. After a few years away from college I appreciated how thorough he was during the entire course even though I was challenged to grow as a writer and thinker with each paper. His dedication to the online format was reassuring as well.
Great professor: lectures easy to understand. Quizzes are open book . Gives review sessions for midterm and final. Only two papers.
I enjoyed the lectures, esp. in the second half of the semester. If you miss a day there is a recording available. The 2 essays are based on whats covered in class and no problem, so long as you take notes. Helpful office hours.
Like other reviews, his grading is very critical with notes that arent very legible. You wont get your feedback for weeks or months. His lectures are a must, and take notes because he doesnt want to hear YOUR personal critical assertions of the reading material in your essays. Thats the key. My writing did improve to some degree though.
Professor Ruane made me a stronger writer, I received a failing grade on my first paper. However, he gave us the opportunity to do a revision essay. When I started working with him/using him as my main resource I quickly understood the difference between a bad paper and a great one. His class will push you to your best/prepare you for the future.
If you want an easy A this class is not for you, but Prof Ruane has made me twice the writer I was before I began this course. This is much different than other classes but if you are taking this class because you genuinely want to learn- he is perfect. He's given me lots of individual help and really set me up for success in future classes.
If you want to just breeze by, Prof. Ruane isn't for you! He is very lecture and book-heavy. Slacking off isn't going to help, hopefully, he fixes his weekly quiz system because it's rigged to fail ( like miss 2 questions and fail type). I took him as a re-take and he was just too much for me. Takes a while to get things graded and back to you.
First time having to write one of these for a professor. Do not take this class unless you are the perfectionist A+ student. Prof. Ruane's online classes are a complete waste of an hour and a half as almost everything he says may make sense in his mind but no one else's. He just let me know today I should drop the course, the last day to do so.
I personally liked taking his class, but it's probably not for you if you're not passionate about writing. He challenges you to do your best and when you turn it in he lets you know how you still could've done better. I love writing, and liked the challenge and as long as you put in the effort and time and go to his office hours you'll be fine.
He is an ok professor.. he does not enter in any grades, when he gives back graded essays you do not understand his feedback. I was lost a lot in class. It is not much work at all, but it comes with the cost of never knowing what it is going on or what he expects from us.
The worst teacher I've had. Spent the entirety of class reciting the text that we already were quizzed on, instead of teaching us. His grading was horrific. He openly made fun of students work/ideas and laughed at students. Grades in grade book led me to think I had an A, but on the last week of school he put in "extra grades" and failed me by 1pt.
Your assignments will not be graded until after the semester ends. Major assignments are only graded months after they are due and feedback is illegible. When you attempt to schedule an appointment to meet with him, he will not show up or even email you about his absence. The class itself is not too difficult as I easily passed with minimal effort.
The negative reviews you see are appropriate. The man is incredibly over-critical and frankly makes the whole class experience not fun. I had a few interactions with him during his office hours too ... not the friendliest guy either! I dropped his class. He was not for me and apparently he's not for a lot of people. Take someone else.
Do not take any classes from professor Ruane, while hes very knowledgeable, but he is far and away the toughest grader Ive ever had, he expects his students to already have expert level knowledge and if you dont, he will fail you in a heartbeat.
Prof Ruane is extremely good. Very critical. I became a better writer after his class. I would take him again in a heart bit. You have to really work hard. To succeed in this class you have to use him as your main resource and he is always available during office hours. Do you want an easy A? This class is not for you.
You HAVE to take notes ask questions. He provides a lot of resources but they are still a bit confusing, so try your best and to pass, you honestly HAVE to email him or meet during office hours. I got a 95 on the most difficult paper, but it truly was soooo much work and I still got A LOT of feedback on it. NOT an easy class at all.
This professor doesn't respect breaks. He assigned the second major writing assignment in the class the day before spring break began, and expects it to be finished the last day of spring break. He is very thorough and you can expect his grading to reflect this.
I hated this class. At first it's easy, you do a few short readings along with an easy quiz. Then there's the essays. I worked for hours trying to make my essays the best they could be, and he would STILL find a million and one reasons to lower my grade and mark me down. Assigned a ton of assignments over spring break and doesn't take late work.
I would not recommend this class. The professor was great, I was enjoying the readings and he seems clear to when it comes to assignments and helps out. BUT ONLY take this class if you're a beyond amazing writer because he is so tough with grading. I felt like I was giving my 110% and I would fail. I had to drop the class. Very strict policies too.
If you miss 4 classes you do not get credit even if something unfortunate happens there is no excuse for it. Fairly intense but reasonable grading on essays but in class I enjoyed hearing him discuss the course work. I was forced to leave the class as not receive credit due to family passing and missed class which I don't find reasonable.
He consistently would assign multiple readings a night and then surprise us with an essay the next class when the calendar would not state there is one. All the while subsequently asking us to write a rough draft of a research essay the next class as well. Terribly boring regurgitate his opinions in your essays or you will fail.
3 essays, lots of readings and quizzes. Really tough grader, literally marks up a whole essay. I cried multiple times because of this class. If you just reach out to him and ask for feedback, he'll give it and make time. Half of our class dropped out by halfway through the semester. Wouldn't reccomend, but you can make it work.
Prof. Ruane doesn't provide feedback on drafts unless you specifically ask for it and attend a meeting with him, and he's overcritical of the essays. He will nitpick everything until your paper is a skeleton. The class seems easy at first, but the essays will make this class difficult. It's not an easy A, and it requires a lot of effort to do well.
Prof. Ruane could use some help stepping into the 21st century. His learning objectives are all memory based with very little teaching. He has a strong middle school learning tactic and makes it difficult for students whose learning styles don't align. I found it very difficult to stay consistent in his course work. 0/10 do not recommend
Be prepared for lengthy lectures where you are expected to memorize information or take really good notes as access to lectures and materials is regularly taken down. Assigns work with Thursday and Sunday due dates and has to be reminded to open access to lectures which is a pain since there is already such a time crunch on the work assigned.
Very harsh grader. Feedback and critiques did not help me improve. Had to drop the course.
Forced to take Ruane for 1302 & 2327. Watching 3 hours of recordings per week is required. Essays/tests make up most of the course. Assignments are posted Th & Sat at 7pm and due before the next assignment is posted. Midterm and final are extremely difficult; must be able to analyze any quote read in class. 0/10 worst prof I've had at ACC!
Professor actively made fun of students work during lecture and went out of his way to point out how bad of a job I did on an assignment in comparison to his other classes, rather than actually helping. Assigns work with zero consideration to time outside of class. Ridiculous attendance policies and regularly takes down course material. 0/10.
avoid at all costs. I submitted the Essay 1 way before it was due. He gave me a 0 & said i didn't turn in my essay. I had to email him & send the submission email asking why i got a 0 when i did submit. He had me email my essay only for him to give me a 0 because i wrote about both topics instead of picking one smh. I did extra work & still got 0
He's a strict online grader, often forgets due dates, lacks clear feedback, and deviates from the rubric.
Professor Ruane was one of the worst teachers that I had this year. The way that he gives out instructions are confusing and he changes the directions constantly. One time, DURING while we were writing the essay, he changed the instructions to the point where I had to rewrite the essay 5 times because he kept on changing things. DO NOT TAKE HIM.
DONT TAKE HIM, so many better options, my only B in 2 semesters
I got an A in English Composition 1, and my only problem with this course was the professor. He is very rude, and does not allow any revisions. He would not give ANY feedback on papers before the final draft was turned in. There is no point to all these drafts if no feedback is given and revisions can't be made. DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR.
Informative lectures, expectations for papers are clear in the instructions, and he's quick to respond to emails. As long as you can repeat what he discussed in the lectures in your own words, you'll do well on the papers. He can be forgetful about communicating due dates and tends to repeat himself, but let him know and he'll get back on track.
Hardly explains anything during lectures, very confusing, you have to work with the materials he gives in your own time anyway... the materials itself also can be confusing. Harsh grader. Lots of drafts that he does not give feedback on, but if you don't submit a draft he'll take points off the final paper.
DONT TAKE HIM. The professor's teaching style was not the most effective for me. The course material was quite heavy, with a significant amount of reading assigned each week, all due within tight deadlines. The class included two challenging essays and exams that required identifying authors and interpreting quotes from all the readings.
Professor Ruane's class is challenging, but using unstuckstudy and consistent effort can help. He gives detailed feedback, but the grading can be tough. Attend all classes, as absences are not excused.
3 essays and a pass/fail test, except the pass/fail doesn't mean you pass the course, it just means that you will fail the course if you don't pass the pass/fail. You also have to qualify to take the exam. Lectures are boring, and essays are harshly graded and will take over a month to grade. He answers questions and is friendly
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!! I hated every second of this class and dreaded going to class because of how incredibly boring his lectures were. He is very bad at grading and told me a day after the semester was over that I didnt meet an essay requirement and would get an 'I' in the course if I didnt do it by a certain date. DONT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!!!!!!
Actual nightmare
This was hands down the most difficult English class I've ever taken. The professor rarely graded assignments on time and gave little to no feedback. It was incredibly frustrating and demoralizing. Austin Community College offers a variety of excellent classes and instructors. I strongly recommend taking this course with someone else.
Does not grade essays in a timely manner. Assignments are announced in-class and we are not given ample time to do them. Lectures are minimally helpful. Good luck if you have more than 1 other class or a job. You won't have time to do the assignments.
He doesn't grade your work on time. I had an essay draft due August 23, and he just now graded it (It's November 20, the last day to withdraw). He won't grade the drafts before the final is due, then tell you to go based on the draft comments. He also won't let you leave the classroom for any reason, or your grade will be affected. Not worth it.
Everyone in my class had below an 80 or dropped
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!! The overall class average is currently 30%. He removes his lecture videos and study guides off of his blackboard page a week before the exam so if you don't take photos of everything, then you have nothing to study. The class average being a 30% is enough to tell you that this class is not work taking.
While his lectures are good, that is the only strong part of his teaching style. His handwritten grading is often illegible, then scanned and emailed back. He also actively resists using ACC's required electronic system black board, this causes confusion in essay requirements and delays, other instructors have told me to avoid his class.
PLEASE DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. I don't have anything against him, but his classes are very boring, and he is a strict professor and grades strictly. If you mistakenly don't follow the instructions, just know you have failed. I also advise you not to take this class if you are not good at essays, if you are easily frustrated, or use AI.
