He was pretty cool! im not big on math but i barely showed up and still managed a C grade. make sure you do your HW, but all dat really matters is how good you do on tests! He breaks concepts down real good and his is really approachable! he's a young teacher like late 20s early 30s (2008) so he isnt uptight or anything! if ur good at tests pick em
This will be an honest post. Simpson is a very nice guy. Great instruction. Always on-time. Taught in a clear manner and always did plenty of examples. Now, you cannot pass this class without doing all of the homework and quizzes. These prepare you for the tests. You must come to class. You must put in the time and you can pass with an A. I did.
He's a nice guy, sorta funny. But his teaching isn't as great as it could be. i was very disappointed with my grade at the end. I didn't slack off, I did all the homework (online-pain in the butt entering in answers). His tests always killed me, they were so hard! He's a tough grader too. The only good thing about him was that he was punctual.
Professor Simpson is an excellent teacher. He really helps you understand the concepts. His exams were very fair. If you want to succeed in his class, you have to study.
awesome teacher. i had him for calc I. totally recommend this dude. we do hw online on webassign, which can be annoying but totally worth it. tests are practical, just study notes and hw. only horrible thing is the book was sooooooooo expensive. neways have fun!
Very interesting prof. and he'll keep you interested and focused with his personality and teaching style. Homework is quite a load, but that's what you need to understand and pass. His tests are increasingly difficult compared to his lectures that cover the basics. You still have to work on quite a bit on your own.
He is an awesome dude, he really likes math and wants you to learn. The homework is a pain in the butt sometimes, especially when the due dates sneak up on you. His tests are straight forward and overall very fair (even the optimization). I would recommend him to anyone. (dunno exactly how good of a teacher he was cause most was review from hs)
I had him for Trig and Pre-Cal and he's an awesome professor. Just do your hw and you're guaranteed to pass. I didn't do most of my hw but I passed because of my exams. My friend on the other hand was the opposite of me. Did all the hw but failed like 2 exams but managed to get a B. Take him, he's very intelligent.
He's a very outside of the box teacher. He talks about the general idea. If your a student who needs steps and memorization, do not take his class. He is very knowledgable about math and a lot of different theories, and tends to ramble and go off topic. Homework and exams are pretty much all word problems, so if your good at them then take him.
If you want to really learn math and understand it, Professor Simpson is the perfect teacher. He really cares about the subject and making sure the students "get it". He also makes it enjoyable. Great teacher!
You can't go wrong with Prof. Simpson. Hes a great guy, one of the best professors at CRC. Easy to understand and is extremely helpful.. don't be afraid to ask questions! The homework is online and can be tough at times. Quizzes go over concepts in the homework. The tests are also challenging at time. So, you reap what you sow. Overall 9/10
Best prof I have ever had. His teaching style is perfect, and at just the right pace. He also takes to time to record himself working out problems so students can go over them at home...an over achieving prof!!
He is a REALLY good teacher. You HAVE to do the homework, which is a lot, but it helps because you are prepared for the finals and exams. But you have to be on top on your game from the very beginning. And if you don't understand something, ASK! He is very very helpful though. He won't move from a topic unless you understand it. Two thumps up!!
Explains everything with EXTRA details, sometimes UNNECESSARY details! But he is very very passionate about math, he calls himself the "math god". If you are a student that needs to have several examples done on the board to understand it, then take another professor. He likes to get into the "ROOT" of problems or formulas. He knows his math histor
One of the best profs i've had. I didn't like the online hw that much, but it helped in the long run to keep me focused. He really knows his stuff and loves to share. Don't take him if you're not willing to work (like that last dude probably). Oh, and there were no pop quizzes, so I dunno what that last post was about... probably bitter :)
Mr. Simpson is an excellent teacher. He is extremely helpful and even answers questions via email outside of office hours! You just have to be willing to do your work and study. I think that the people who posted neg feedback are failing and need to wake up because this is college. They are also probably failing English since they can't spell.
He was one of the best Math professors ever! I loved him! He's very easygoing and easy to talk to. The way he teaches is so clear and so easy to follow that when you're doing the homework it isn't so bad, although homework is given everyday. Lots of extra credit given if you do the hw early. I wish I can take him again. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!
Interesting man. If you've ever watched superman he kind of looks like Brainiac. But seriously, This man teaches a class that prepares you for the next. He goes over the basics, before getting technical on you. He explains things in a manner that everyone can understand. Any advice? Just take notes thats all.
I really liked his class. He has notes everyday, very few study sessions (if ever), and always comes to class. He is really helpful when you don't understand (just say soething and he will try to make things clear) and tries to give you as much information as possible given in the time frame. He is tough, but STUDY and you pass.
He speaks loud and clear; always open to questions. Take notes during lectures; it helps on hw. Take the Chapter tests in the back will help prepare for up coming tests. Online and text hw are similar to notes. The projects are simple. The exams are challenging, so study hw and notes! Good luck!
Take his class!!! He changed my view about math, I really hated math until I took his class and everything just became so easy! He is a great professor and really cares that his students understand the material! He is not boring like other math teachers and you will enjoy his class, SO TAKE HIS CLASS!
All I can say is Mr. Simpson is very cool teacher when it comes to math. But here is the deal "webassign+.1-.25+3hrs/day=dammit" That is the reality of the webassign.
If you are lucky you will have Mr. Simpson as a teacher. He is a great teacher, very smart. If he cant make you understand no one will. I have had him for 120, and 335. I hope he is teaching cal 1, and if he is I am taking him for sure!! Really if you want a great teacher take him you wont leave his class empty handed.
Math isn't my strong subject at all, but Professor Simpson is probably one of the best math teachers I've had. He goes through examples clearly and explains them thoroughly. He's always there to help you out and is pretty laid back. Don't be fooled, the tests are like normal math tests, HARD, but with him you should be fine.
Horrible teacher. Knows just as much as the students who have never taken the classes before. Definitely do not recommend.
Not the easiest teacher, but he makes math easy to understand. tests are not impossible, you just have to really think. Homework is a must but not an overload. take him, if you're willing to do some work. it's MATH!! don't expect to do nothing and get an A. willing to meet students half way, but for him, it's college, YOU chose to be here.
Great teacher. Easy to talk to. Jokes with the class, but stay on topic. Two thumbs up. Get him for a math teacher, and you'll have a fun semester.
The BEST math teacher I've ever had and definately NOT a bore. Keeps class interesting and is friendly. Very clear and precise. Doesn't move on until the class understands the material. Great at addressing questions. Very fair at grading. Highly recommended!
Sorry, but I went into this class smarter than I came out. Lectures and book were useless.
His exams are fair and straightforward. I can't say the same fot the final though! Points for exams, quizes, and final only. Only 8 quizes and they are worth 20% so do bad on just one and it really effects your grade which I didn't like. The quizes are only one question each open notes at least but if you don't know it, you failed the quiz...
Clear and helpful in class. He doesn't make you do the homework, but I wouldn't use that as an excuse to not do it. Quizzes are easy (open-note), but don't carry much weight. Tests are tough; he typically picks the medium to harder questions and doesn't allow any notes. A lot of memorization is required.
He is an amazing math teacher. Took him over the summer and learned more about algebra in his review than I did in an actual algebra course. Very good at explaining concepts and making sense of math. Very cool common sense approach to math which really helps make sense of math. Highly recommend for anyone who likes math, and those who want to learn
I'd recommend to take his class anytime..plus i love webassign
Took math 100 & it was awful!Had an A in the prev math, got A's on all his hmwrk & quizzes & a D/F on all tests.A lot of repetitive problems but totally different problems on test.He is not helpful basically nonstop talking in class all from notes.A lot of hmwrk 3hrs/day.Be ready to memorize the entire book & if u didn't take him b4 u won't pass.
He thinks everyone's one the same page as him. Only 3 people in the class are. I ask for help from him, he says, "Just keep looking at it, it takes time." First Exam, half way through semester = pass drop date. Speeds through lessons. I won't be going to SF State in fall because of this class.
Professor Simpson is a great Math teacher, he's vibrant and keeps it fun, but most times he asumes you know something and moves fast. Webasign is not helpful at all, when you get something wrong it doesnt say what you got wrong, yor just marked wrong. And the book sucks all together. I prefer math lab, at least it walk you through the problem
Great Professor. Homework is mandatory so do it because it will reflect your grades. He's very understanding, clear and even helps you during the break period. He loves the subject which makes him an even better teacher.
I have always struggled and never got higher than a C in ANY math class. However, Professor Simpson is a great instructor. He will ALWAYS address questions, even during his breaks. This class is tough, but so is math! His exams were VERY fair and hint: he asks a lot of conceptual questions! I am proud to say he helped me get my first A in math!
Simpson is the best math professor I've ever had. He is easy to fallow and fun to listen to. Don't get me wrong, the tests/exams are dificult and require you to have a good grasp of the subject. Anyone willing to work at it can get an A in this class.
Prof Simpson is a good teacher in general but his exams are very hard and totally different from the homework and practce.Besides, webassign system is not fair because homework is corrected by computer that may consider something wrong even when it is correct and you lose points.Failing this class delayed my plans of transfer & made me lose time.
His lectures are very easy to understand. Now the homework is another story. Webassign is very hard to follow and since it is homework it should be practice to help you to succeed in the class but it does not. The Exams are so far left of what you discuss in class. When a class average is 60% you would think he would notice a problem.
Good lectures, but EXTREMELY tough tests. Most hw has to be completed on web assign which takes hours and hours. I failed this class, but math has never been nor will be my strength. He is more of a university style proffesor.
He tries to be helpful but he is not. He tries to help the class with homework yet the class is still confused. He also sort of comes off rude. I think his lectures are great but homework and exams are hard to understand and to recieve points. Dont Take His Course!
He's a very helpful teacher! VERY clear in his lectures, will help you with problems on the homework before and after class. Homework requires time to do and the tests are really hard if you don't study. overall GREAT math teacher
Professor Simpson is very easy to follow in lecture, is accessible via email, and is really nice during office hours. It is true that his exams are hard but they are also very fair. He tells you what you need to know and then expects you to know it. This is my professor of choice for Calculus.
I've taken Professor Simpson for my precalc and now taking him for CALC I. You won't get an A in his courses if you don't do your work. I assigns some hw, but I wouldn't say it takes too much time, ~30-45 mins/day. He loves math and has a good sense of humor, so that makes his subject fun. Recommend him for all who want 2 learn math!!!
Professor Simpson is a great teacher and you can tell that he loves what he does. If you have any questions he will answer them and explain things with clarity. As long as you pay attention, attend class, ask questions when you dont understand and study you should do very well in his class
Simpson has charisma when it comes to teaching mathematics. He makes learning enjoyable and attending class feel less like a chore. He covers the material thoroughly and he is more than willing to stay after class to help with any problems. Homework is done online. His exams are a bit difficult, but with a good amount of studying, you'll be fine.
He gives out a quiz everyday and doing the assigned homework won't prepare you for it. In order to get good grades on his quizzes you must do the recommended homework. His exams are at least 3 times harder than the homework. His exams will test your mastery of the topic. You must work your butt off in his class.
Very good teacher. He is very straightforward and challenges his students. Always do your work and show up or you will not pass. His exams are not that difficult just READ THE PROBLEM and you'll do fine. Always do homework they will prepare you for the exam(s). I recommend this professor highly.
Professor Simpson is a great. He is always open to answering questions and he takes time to make sure everyone understands the topics. If you do bad in his class its because you don't do the homework and don't ask for help. I highly recommend taking his class.
He's pretty good teacher and is really helpful if you go ask him for help during his office hours. His tests are a little hard but otherwise, I think he's a pretty good teacher. I recommend him over other math teachers.
Professor Simpson is by far the best math teacher I have ever had. I used to be horrible at math and it would take me forever to understand concepts. But now with him, he has changed my view of math and the way he explains things are very simple and to the point. Even if you don't understand he's more than willing to help you in a nice way.
Very good! Simpson is very clear and concise. He knows his stuff when it comes down to math and definitely clarifies any issues. His exams are hard (but it's math so this is a no brainer) but if you attend at all times and do the homework and ask if you need help, you will without doubt pass this class! Highly recommend Simpson.
Nice guy in class but he really seems to enjoy compiling the most difficult test possible. Enjoys teaching the conceptual stuff so that you know how to do to take the knowledge and expand it into tackling more difficult problems which is good in theory but not very nice to people like me who suck at math. Stuck it out and got a C in class.
Mr. Simpson is a great professor, but not an easy one. Although he is very fair and clear in teaching. I would recommend him to anyone, you will learn a lot with him and he really tries to clear things out if you have a hard time. Ways to Pass: Show up everyday, STUDY, and ask questions. Good luck. His tests are hard.
Teacher is difficult if you haven't taken math in a while. He moves fast (on exam 3 when other classes are on exam 2). Will skip things he beleives is "stright forward" so you have to find the missing steps yourself (math lab). Exam class average is 69%-72%. Gives pop quizes while he passes back old papers.
Do not take this professor! Only three people passed this class with a C. No A's or B's. Makes his exams way more complicated than they should be. Assumes you know everything.
The class is very difficult and it did not seem like he wanted to take the time to answer questions when I was confused during lecture. His exams are also very different than the homework so it is hard to succeed in the course.
The class is not online but the homework is online with webassign. The online homework is very different from the problems on exams which makes it tough to do well. He also has a big ego which interferes with trying to concentrate on the concepts at times.
Really nice guy. However his tests are extremely difficult. He said during the semester he was going to switch how he will approach teaching math, as if we and previous classes were his "test dummy's (for a lack of a better phrase). My self esteem in math went low.I took Stewart in the summer and though she is also hard, she is more better/experienced.
I had Professor Simpson for Calc one and I am taking him again currently in Calc two. He has CLEAR expectations of his students and is NOT unreasonable. His tests are not that hard I always felt the homework was harder. His tests will show if you did the homework and showed up so if you skip class and don't try you will NOT pass.
Do not take this professor! at least NOT FOR TRIG class. He goes by too fast and all he talks about is about Pre-Cal or Cal 1. If you're new to Trig you'll be LOST in this class since this professor is too concern about teaching you pre calculus and not trig. EXAMS ARE DIFFICULT!! and all homework is online.
Do not take this professor! Homework is online, but is very different from exams, making it hard to pass. I put a lot of time in on the class, but still not doing well. His teaching sucks!
Professor Simpson is great. Super down to earth guy. The material in this course is dense. He does a very good job of explaining it & giving alternate ways of thinking about the concepts. He listens to students and will change practices that aren't working to ensure success. He makes himself extremely available, is always online to take questions.
Took him a while ago for trig. Very open to questions. Very passionate about his work. If you are making a real effort to pass the class, then you will pass his class. His class is challenging the way all classes should be. Easy to talk to and I learned a lot. Prepared me very well for pre-cal and then some.
Too much emphasis on technology and too little teaching of the concepts for an upper level class. The class is not online but homework is online. He is a poor teacher that relies on technology to teach the class.
He is a good teacher. The resources he provides with the online homework is limitless. More than enough for you to pass. Or even get an A. But a VERY tough grader. To me at least. Try to provide as much information on your work as possible. You would be fine. But the online homework website provides more than enough info in order to do well
He's not a bad person just not a good teacher for calc. 2 At times I was confused and the he seemed to not know what to do . I would not recommend and he grades hard.
I have always enjoyed math in the past but I don't like the way Simpson teachers.I was planning to transfer but now I am going to have to repeat which is very frustrating .
Professor Roy Simpson is probably the best math lecturer ever, really clear, concise, and straight forward. He is extremely passionate about math, therefore he helps students, challenges student, and gets you prepared for the next level. Although, his exams are really difficult you have to really work hard for what you deserve. Final werent as hard
Great teacher. Prompt responses to questions. The homework are mostly done on WebAssign - a very helpful tool. Exams are difficult, but if you finish all the assignments he provides, you will certainly pass the exams and even get good grades on them. It's a 5 units' course so TONS of materials to digest. Be prepare to spend TIME to study hard!
Professor Simpson is super passionate about Mathematics. Amazing lectures. He makes coffeewhatever he is drinking that morning look really good. Helpfulness: 100,infinity) Clarity:100, infinity) Easiness: DNE
Not the best for Calc 1. Test were hard and lectures confusing. I would not recommend him.
He uses Webassign for online homework, which was confusing. Then when you take the exams the problems look way different than the online problems so you crash and burn.
He is a really great professor. Granted his tests are more difficult than your average professor. However, if you want to transfer to a CSU or UC, don't take an easy professor (sure you will get a better GPA, but that won't help when you take upper division classes). His tests are difficult, but fair. I thought it was consistent with our hw.
He's not the greatest teacher and it is so difficult to do well in the this class. I studied hard and even went to tutoring but still could not make it.
He was my Calc one and calc two professor. Wish he taught calc three! He's probably one of the best math professors I've ever had. He is EXTREMELY clear and concise. He gives moderate homework and his exams are not that hard (barring you actually showed up and did the homework). He works with students. For the higher math (calc series) take him.
He was pretty rude when grading my tests and left some mean comments. It's also a really hard class. Having to take it again over the summer. I don't understand anything and I've always been fairly good with math.
He is not an easy teacher and not good at explaining the concepts either. At times he seemed to get confused with what he was doing and that is how I feel in his class most of the time.
First off, please do not take him for math 120. He isn't helpful at all. Homework is done online which is never good. I was concerned about my grade & contacted him and he sent me back a rude email telling me he couldn't help me at all. Half of the class dropped out after about 3 weeks. Even a disabled student dropped. DO NOT TAKE HIM AT ALL.
for the record I have averaged a 3.7 over the past 2 years + got an A in all math classes. I failed simpsons class miserably. only 6 people are passing right now, there were almost 30 on the first day. hes smart and he likes to show it by skipping steps (and not explaining them) + could care less if you fail. His standards are way too high for crc
Hard class and the prof. was not very clear or helpful. Also his exams looked way different than the homework.
Simpson is really passionate about what he does, and makes math more interesting than most math instructors. He lectures for the whole two hours and twenty minutes practically every class. His tests are very hard, but are possible to pass if you fully understand the material. Also, he's easy on the eyes, which is a plus.
Simpson is really passionate about what he does, and makes math more interesting than most math instructors. He lectures for the whole two hours and twenty minutes practically every class, so be prepared. His tests are very hard, but are possible to pass if you do a lot of problems. And I must say he's easy on the eyes, which is a plus.
There was a ton of homework and even if you do the homework he throws a curve ball on the test. I wish that test questions would at least be something like the homework, but it never was. Overall he was not very good at explaining calc 2 which was disappointing. I definitely would not take him again.
Honestly, Simpson is a really good professor. He's clear and makes sure everyone understands the concept before moving on. Gives study guides for tests, which are at the level of the actual test. The only reason you'd fail is because you didn't put in the work. Its a tough class; but show up and do the work and you'll pass.
Awesome professor! Test weren't as hard as I expected. But still college level exams. Do the homework, practice problems, study guides, and come to class. Otherwise you won't pass.
He teaching is hard to follow and he did not want to spend time answering questions. His attitude is also kinda rude like he is above the class which makes it tough to ask questions.
Prof. Simpson was way to easy.I regret taking him because I was unprepared for the next math courses .We didn't even get tested on the last half of chapter 11 (which every other prof. does). You are better off with taking a professor who is more tough. He's a nice guy &smart, but his exams and level of rigor did not prepare me for future classes...
He is ok but did not explain things very well.
The homework is long and neither the tests nor the quizzes seem to be related to it. He excepts all his students to spend more time on math but in reality it's difficult to meet his acceptations while taking other classes. It's not worth it if you are spending so much time and effort on this class if you are not specializing in math.
Quizzes: He's not very organized, there are days where you'll have quizzes and there are days you don't. Homework: Most of your HW will be online, and sometimes depending on the chapter he'll assign it from the book as well. Exams: DIFFICULT. You'll have 10-15Q, but they're worth 8-10 pts each. So if you miss one, you're pretty much screwed.
He makes the class too hard and is not a good teacher. If you make it through with a passing grade you are one of the lucky ones!
Great professor. I did't take math classes for almost four years, but it wasn't a hard class for me . Even though english is not my first language, I found him very clear. I would highly recommend him.
He's a good professor, but the material is VERY difficult. He makes it as clear as possible; you need a good understanding of the concepts to pass the class. Gives quizzes every now & then so be prepared. Test are super difficult; the final is somewhat easier. DO THE HOMEWORK! Would take again, I cried 4 times. but I got a 90 on the final!!
He is the BEST. Has a really good way of explaining stuff and always relates stuff to the real world which makes math interesting. His test are like his lecture problems. Can be tricky sometimes but spend sometime 2 think about the problems. He was a bit lazy this last semester but the hw and the lecture notes should be enough for you 2 learn.
Simpson will make your college Calculus the best experience of your college career. He is really good at explaining the material and always makes time in class for students to ask questions about any confusing material. If you do take him do all your HW please. And make sure you ask questions. Book is online on W.A so no need purchase one. CHEERS.
He has a super big ego but is not the best teacher. Gives hard tests and not a lot of partial credit.
I did not pass this class but that was only because I did not put the proper amount of work into it. he is a great professor and always willing to help! Awesome professor!
If you're struggling, do the homework and ask questions at the beginning of class. He does not allow notes on exams, so be prepared to study - peer groups helped me. The quizzes are generally harder than the exams. Homework & quizzes are good prep for exams.
I left Mr. Simpson in the Spring of 2016 with polished creativity in my work. Most of the types of problems on his exams were none that I have ever had before as they required out-of-the-box thinking, a skill that is necessary for success not only in college, but for everything that we do. That aside, Mr. Simpson's analogies were a little..."meh".
I really enjoyed this class and I learned a lot.
Prepare to dedicate a MAJORITY of your time if you want to do well. Professor Simpson knows his stuffI do not doubt that. However, I do feel that he tends to convolute the material and can be more precise in his teaching. Exams are above-average, but they are fun and fair. Understand the CONCEPTS of homework questions. Memorizing is a dark hole
Hi, I'm here to help calc students decide their math professors. Simpsons' Calc I class will be hard, no doubt about that, especially if this is your first Calculus course. However, know that if you come out on top of his class, you will finely-polish the skills required to succeed in your future math courses.
Had to drop his class cause it was obvious this professor was going to be a difficult one and did not want to fail knowing I already was. Lectures are very heavy and the tests were very hard! I was able to take 3 tests before dropping and they involved nothing on what was on the lecture. Don't take this professor if math isn't your thing.
Professor Simpson is the best Mathematics Professor. I have never had a teacher or professor like him. His way of teaching is hilarious. He goes deep into the concept and describe the concepts very clearly. He is really an amazing Professor. Exams are very easy. I believe for bright future in mathematics he is the best Professor. He's really genius
Best math teacher I've had. Challenging but he does a good job of explaining and applying the stuff you'll learn. He was very, very helpful in office hours too. I recommend him to anyone
Very nice professor and most of the test problems are similar to the homework.
Hw graded on accuracy. Spending hours doing an assignment just to have the 2 problems you were stuck on get a wrong answer give you a 30% is crushing. Test points removed exponentially. First arithmetic based error, -1 point. The next -2, then -4 and so on throughout all exams, it's ridiculous and not helpful. I worked hard, yet failed to anxiety.
hours of homework only to have the two hardest questions graded. tests are not much better
He does not let you use a calculator, for those of you interested.
Won't let you use a calculator at all and goes through lectures fast. Most people in the class too scared to ask him questions because he thinks all of this is common sense. Takes math way too seriously and needs to chill.
Do your self a favor and dont take him. Gives the easiest examples in class but tests are hard af. His study guides dont help you at all. Once one thing is wrong the entire question is wrong. Literally take any other teacher in the district. Makes calc 2 harder than it should be. Wouldnt wish for my worst enemies to take him.
I honestly regret so much for taking him... his lectures are so confusing and unclear. Its so difficult to understand what hes talking about in class. There is no SI tutor to help you and his office hours are after class which isnt even helpful. Exams are too difficult and the review sheet doesnt help. Would not recommend taking him!
Just do your self a favor and find another calculus professor. Quizzes almost everyday, not really a bad thing but if you want a quiz first thing in the morning there ya go. Hours of homework just to have two of the hardest problems graded is frustrating. Exams are not the greatest. Read other reviews about the course they are pretty accurate.
Dont take him. He makes calculus hard than it should be he makes hw longer than usual. Quizzes and test are no where near the lecture and gives no study guides just literally hw questions. I retook cal 1 and literally got an A with a professor WHO KNOWS HOW TO TEACH and gives an actual study guide like the test. So dont take Simpson. PERIOD
If math isn't your strong suite expect the homework to take exponentially longer. I had to find this out the hard way over the course of 2 full workload semesters and COVID19 conditions. Your grade is highly effected by your ability to remember prerequisites and he teaches beyond basic understanding of Calc II to prepare you for following maths.
He is not the most understanding professor, nor is he the least but he grades very harshly. He does not curve and his tests are brutally hard. He lectures a lot (often keeps you over class time) and gives large quantities of homework. What makes it worse is that he does very easy problems during class as examples, not preparing you for the exam
His lectures are awesome, really bring out the love for Math in you, so check out his videos. He definitely wont curve, I lost points in his exams a lot and it is painful to see your grade plunges but I think it is a good thing to see where you are to improve yourself. I dont regret taking him though he destroyed my straight A records .
I tried so hard and got so far but n the end it doesn't even matter. I think this will explain everything because if math isn't your strongest suit he can be very discouraging. Overall he is good at teaching math and you will be fine as long as you keep up with his knowledge of math. He made me realize I should pursue a new career with no math n it
I cant say I have ever had a teacher this bad, my experience with math has made me hate it. If you want a teacher that replies to you when you email or teaches then dont pick this class, the teacher grades the test extremely harsh and make everything much more difficult than it should be. Little time given and no help, avoid him like the plague!!
Truly a great professor! Yes, he expects you to work hard and do your best, but he gives you the tools to succeed. If your prerequisites are lacking, it will be a tough time, as any 400 class would be. Some review is built into the lectures. Homework is very manageable, just don't procrastinate, and go to office hours. No regrets taking this class!
Do not take his class. His grading policy is weird because every test is weighted differently and almost a lot of the problems on the test are not on the homework assignments. The lectures and the homework assignments are given are not the same.
Professor Simpson was amazing! Here's the rundown: 1.)Great lectures 2.)Lots of homework, but they really prepare you for the tests 3.)Super approachable and doesn't make you feel dumb for asking questions 3.)Looks at your work on the tests to give you as many points possible 4.)Be prepared to do a lot of work, it is a five unit class after all.
He is extremely energetic and gets to know the students. He is knowledgeable and does a good job at explaining. Although the material was very tough for me, I was able to ask him questions as he helped me get a better understanding. I highly respect him even though the class was super stressful.
You get what you put in. I see a lot of students complaining about this professor but in my opinion this is one of the best math teachers I have had. I too had that mindset that if I got a bad grade on an exam I would blame the teacher. If you put time aside and actually study the course material, you will succeed. He explains concepts clearly!
If math isn't your strong suit, don't take him. No dropping tests/curving, because he says that this is a course for STEM majors and so hes"preparing" us by not curving, yet curving is crucial for stem courses. If youre not strong on prerequisites, also do not take him. Wish I had a different math teacher.
DO NOT TAKE HIM FOREVER!!!!!!!!!
If you couldnt already tell by the comments made by this Professor to fellow students of his, the ego on this guy is through the roof. Tells students who are struggling to understand something to go back to elementary math instead of just furthering explaining /giving more examples. Makes you feel dumb and doesnt give enough examples.
Simpson is just so awful with how he structures the course, 100 characters is not enough to convey my grievances. He gives daily quizzes which, if you didn't know, prepare to have your grade whittled away throughout the year because of that bad decision. His teaching fundamentally encapsulates everything that is wrong with American education.
Took in fall '20 & can't recommend him. He isn't a good lower division instructor. He used youtube videos made for general public as lec material. Examples were not to level of exam q's. Often taught a level above course guidelines. Unprofessional, lacks maturity. No feedback. Retaking w/ diff prof who teaches the appropriate material & have an A.
The lectures in this class are fantastic! His class is the place to learn the "why" behind math and appreciate its beauty and applications. The exams have been very fair; if you are lucky enough to get a study guide please use it! The class is rigorous so plan your time well to avoid cramming, try to practice every day. Cannot recommend him enough!
Revised! Lectures are excellent compared to other professors. Simpson likes his theorems and proofs. Limited office hours can be frustrating and lectures are all on YouTube so asking questions can be difficult. PreCalculus is a demanding course, 12 chapters of material in a semester is difficult so buckle up, work hard and take good notes.
Take this class if you want to understand math and not do pointless computations. If you're going to watch PS lectures, make sure you're fully awake because he goes super in detail. This class is pretty self explanatory, if you're lazy go find a different Calc professor. PS has truly made me enjoy a subject I was always dreading to take.
R Simpson is one of the best math professors that I had. He teaches math with a passion and helps you to understand and master the subject. Some students have a goal to get passing grade but do not care about learning. As a result, they have many gaps that prevent them from success in next courses. Take him if you want to learn! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
Can really feel the passion for math in his voice and teaching. Not a typical professor with a terrible mic, if that's what you like. Has knowledge in editing so lecture videos can be digested. Nitpick, give more time to upload work on exams. It takes more than 5 mins to send from phone to computer, sort the photos by question and upload correctly.
This might be his first review for 410, how special! Linear algebra is hefty and overwhelming, and the way Simpson structured it made it somewhat easier to digest (but again, it's still fast-paced). As a professor, he pushes you to gain a better understanding of math and using logic to piece everything together. Definitely go to his office hours!
Very passionate professor who knows his stuff. His video lectures are very easy to follow and the material lectured is exactly what you are assigned for homework and quizzes/exams. Reviewing the study guides are almost essential to passing exams. Very fair grader, the amount of effort you put into the course will reflect on your grade.
3rd semester veteran with PS. This course was definitely hard. PS explained topics well and is very helpful. Homework took a lot longer to do then in calc 1. He sets you up for future math courses. Classes like this build your work ethic, do not pick a lazy professor. After the 1st exam he called out those who did. Overall great prof.
Wonderful Prof. He put A LOT of pressure on your pre-req skills and of course, because it's super important in this class and further classes. Inspirational and understanding professor. Take advantage of his office hour. Quizzes are based on HW, Exams and Finals are covered on Study Guide. Put your work in and you will pass.
I have no idea why some people rate him badly. He has been my best math teacher by far. He is tech savvy so his lecture videos are thorough and entertaining. He is great at explaining concepts and has an obvious passion for math. Linear algebra is HARD but he really takes his time to explain it in the best way he can. Always replies quickly.
One of the worst teachers that I've ever had. We either had homework or multiple quizzes every day, many times it was both. He would assign multiple hours of lecture videos every day that completely drained your energy and were so boring. He would also not teach in class and would only do example questions. You will end up teaching yourself.
Take him ONLY if you have no life outside of class. Teach yourself everyday, and all he ever does in class is homework examples and say that he coded them because that's the only opportunity he'll ever have coding. His lectures end up going way off track because he tries to explain 100 topics to show 1 thing, eventually losing you and boring you.
I had to leave in the middle of class and he still let me come back and take the quiz. He has recorded lectures that you can watch at your own pace while class time is basically additional office hours to help students with the homework, followed by a short, VERY EASY quiz. As long as you study and do you're homework, you'll do fine.
Heavy class, but PS knows his stuff. You can tell he put a lot of work into his courses. We do have very short quizzes every class time. Btwn 1-4 questions. Class time is spent going over hw questions which is NEEDED. Will respond to ?s outside of class time in a timely manner. His suggested lecture schedule is a little heavy, but flexible.
I took Calculus 1 with Professor Simpson in Spring of 2021. I'm further in my academics now and I can say that this professor is particularly good. The rigorous work here set a strong foundation for future courses and helped make me better at problem solving. And if you're passionate about what you're learning he's passionate about teaching you.
Professor Simpson is horrible. All he did is have us watch videos. He never lectured us, and when he did have class, he never talked about the current lesson, but the next lesson. He didn't really teach. He expect us to watch the videos and understand and if we didn't, he didn't care to explain. He just expected us to come in an know everything.
The teaching is trash on a level where I cannot comprehend. You don't care about another persons schedule and when we ask for help you refer the same trashy videos. I had to go on youtube for this class SMH. That big ego you got BOY.
Ignoring the surprising amount of negative reviews expected from those in the lower level courses, the video lectures are very convenient for many students. Prerequisites are extremely important in the subject and Prof. Simpson definitely puts emphasis on them. His grading is more than fair and helps set a strong foundation for later coursework.
Did not pass the class but he was an amazing professor :D
The class is difficult, but he provides all necessary lectures and spends lots of time answering questions. HW has links to examples/videos for extra help. He provides study guides for exams and is a fair grader. Some say he's harsh, I think he provides candid advice and really cares about student success. Great math teacher and very passionate!
Professor Simpson is great at teaching the material. His study guides are explicit and prepare you for the test and I found it really helpful that he had all of his lectures online so I could review the material. He's very by the book and that sets some people off but it also makes his course linear and easy to follow. Great teacher.
One of the best math teachers I've had! Professor Simpson does a fantastic job explaining the concepts to students in entertaining lecture videos and in class. He's always willing to answer questions, provide help in office hours, or respond quickly to emails. The homework takes time, but is worth it. Reasonable quizzes and tests. AWESOME teacher!!
This course is extremely challenging compared to AP Calc in High school. Math has always been extremely easy for me and this course was challenging. Professor Simpson is a great teacher though Positive: -Great lectures -Clear and concise -Goes over homework questions -He really understands the material -Very nice Negative: -challenging material
You will spend hours on homework for this class. First exam averaged 34% and he put the blame on the students. He grades rough on exams and they're worth 60%+ of your grade. Don't take this professor if you are also weak in prerequisites.
Don't take this guy unless you are extremely confident in your prerequisites and math skills, has a huge ego clearly, finding a little clever response to everybody that gives him a bad rating. After a 30% avg exam, he said he would give out daily quizzes, but gave up after the first one. Would be better if he didn't belittle his students so often.
Prof. Simpson's class is great! Lectures are lengthy, but manageable. Study guides help for exams and he drops 4 homeworks. Not sure why negative reviews.
PS is not a bad/ego guy, quite the opposite, he's very likable. The course is challenging and PS puts a big emphasis on tests, having passed 1/5 tests, you can see why I failed. If you're weak in Prereqs or have bad study habits, either study up or reconsider. Though I would not hesitate to take another one of his courses for a second go at it.
I took Professor Simpson's MATH400 last semester and I had great experience. His lectures are very easy to understand and he explained the concepts very well. His exams are a bit challenging but not at an unrealistic level. He also provided study guides for exams so it's not too difficult too get good grades. I'd love to take his class again
Great guy, super personable. Classes are extremely fast pace, if you fall behind your donzo. Super caring and always willing to answer any questions you have. His lectures are interesting although very fast pace. There's A LOT of homework, if you have trouble understanding it'll take up all your free time. Def recommend if you like a challenge.
Simpson is a passionate and committed teacher who's classroom structure maximizes the brief time available for a 3 unit course. His online lectures are concise and clear, his homework and study guides reflect his exams, and his office hours are convenient. Ensure that you memorize/understand theorems/definitions and review the study guide/homework.
As a student who gets 5 in AP calculus. I almost failed my first test in this class. This is the class that requires you to have Pre-reqs and lots time to study. But Prof.Simpson is a very nice person. Every Lecture has online record and study guide for the exam. The free textbooks and daily message about college life show his caring for student
One of the best professors I've had at Los Rios. A lot of material so if prereqs or time management is an issue for you, its going to be rough. He has a ton of material on his youtube channel to help, his tests are weighted to ease you into the class and give time to adjust to his testing style. I'm looking forward to his Calc1 in Sp24.
Great lectures with clear illustrations. If you're struggling to understand something he will explain it until he knows you get it. The grade is primarily based on the exams. There is a lot of homework which helped me learn the material, and he gives detailed info about any mistakes made, but it's not worth much for the grade. No extra credit.
Overall great at teaching. Good lectures with lots of office hours to go over questions. However, his grading criteria can be unfair, with no leway. Secondly, he sometimes displays an unprofessional style of criticism, and fails to understand how demotivating his words are. If his attitude changed, this class would have been much more enjoyable.
Great Math teacher, can tell he really loves math and cares about his students. His class was mostly online videos, and class via zoom was just questions on the material and homework. The videos were great though and I appreciated I could rewatch them if a particular topic was difficult for me.
I ended up using outside materials to learn the majority of the course. The material presented, or teaching style simply did not jive with me, I assume other students were able to learn mainly within the guidelines of the course but all of my essential learning came from outside videos and math club.
Professor Simpson's lectures were some of the best math lectures I've ever had. His lecture notes were concise, making notetaking very easy. His assignments are very challenging, but you'll adapt, and your algebra skills will grow. The exam problems are easier than the HW. So as long as you did it, and the exam review, it'll go great.
Everything is perfect about him, his lectures, homework, and tests but he is a tough grader like really tough that I was surprised after getting my tests results.
Professor Simpson is great, I have taken him for 3 different math courses. He's a very kind man, who really enjoys what he does. For math 410 it was online but exams were in person. He tries not to surprise you on exams. As long as you study the homework and the theory of the course you'll do well. Amazing professor!
Don't take this professor unless he's your last option. His style of teaching is horrible and he is not easy to access outside of class. Trust me, you would be lucky if you got even a C.
Professor Simpson is a great professor. His lectures can be very dense and have a lot of content that he can at times glance over, but that is usually due to lack of questions. If you put in the work to understand the content and do well on tests, this class is fairly passable. His office hours are tons of help also.
Honestly, I'd recommend this class only if you need a refresher on the topics. He assigns 20-question assignments for each lesson he covers, sometimes going over 2 or 3 lessons a day, causing assignments to add up quickly. For the amount of effort homework takes, the grade is disproportionate. He's okay at his job, just not for everyone.
Don't take this class. Not worth it.
AMAZING professor! I would 100% take his class again. I really enjoyed the course, even though I had to withdraw because I didn't stay on top of my work early on. If you stay on track, do the homework, and use his helpful study guides, you'll do great. He's super nice and really cares about his students. Highly recommend! and Thank you!
UNBIAS* kinda nice but dismisses questions in class if they were already mentioned in his lecture videos even if briefly big thing he is very harsh with tests, prioritizes deep app of calculus lots of proofs, can be appreciated, organized lectures. Class median score was F half of the students dropped. dropped his class and got A elsewhere
