Mr. Gildersleeve is funny and makes lectures fun and easy to understand.
Mr. Gildersleeve is hilarious and caring. 4.5/5 total :)
He is a great professor, very caring, and responsible. He cares about all his students. There isn't a lot of homework just have to read a primary source once a week and a midterm and final. I would love to take HIS 122 with Professor Gildersleeve.
His powerpoints do not have notes, so you have to go to class. His lectures were also boring.
Extremely lecture heavy, no notes on Powerpoints so you constantly write dubious amounts of notes that may not be relevant to the course. Does not like it when laptops or phones are used. The only homework is weekly readings and filling out a worksheet about the reading. Tests seem easy but he likes to use complicated grammar to trip students up.
LECTURE HEAVY. I wrote 5 pages of notes for full lecture class. Readings were primary source every week along with a worksheet. He says that hes gonna have a new textbook starting summer or fall. Get on his good side. Dont miss class or itll be hard to pass.
Prof G teaches through telling stories of what happened in history and its easy to visualize it and make sure you take good notes! He's super chill and has a sarcastic sense of humor. He has us analyze documents with a group and gives lectures. He keeps class simple. Super great teacher!
Loved this class! Took it over the summer. Gildersleeve is super passionate about what he teaches and will teach you things/facts outside of the textbook. This class is lecture heavy, and the slides have limited info so make sure to listen and actively take notes. Textbook is also free online!
The absolute best professor you will ever take. As long as you enjoy or even just somewhat enjoy history, you will love his class. Never met a professor more passionate about what he teaches at NVCC or GMU. He only lectures so if you don't like listening and taking notes you won't pass.
Professor Gildersleeve is the best! Hes super outgoing and funny. Hes so passionate about U.S. History and really goes into detail in his Lectures. He provides powerpoints with key words and pictures so you have to take your own notes, so dont miss class! Assignments are easy. We do group work once a week and lecture once a week. 5/5!!!
Professor Gildersleeve is an amazing teacher. He is one of the best teachers I have had for my first time at being a NOVA student and I would highly recommend him for all history classes. He strays off topic sometimes but he is awesome and very funny. definitely a 10/10.
I really enjoyed the lectures. Unlike others professors where history is just a list of facts, they capture the nuance of history without being complicated or boring. The quizzes and exams are easy yet still test your knowledge. I recommend this instructor wholeheartedly. I wish other history instructors would teach like this.
Professor G. is a great professor. He explains information well, and does group work often. Tests are on canvas and are open note, so there is no reason not to get an A. Final consisted of an essay and a kahoot game. 100% take professor Gildersleeve.
Prof G is super chill. His tests are all online and done at home but you do have to do lots of reading from the online textbook he gives. You do have to show up to class. His class is 20% of your overall grade and 2 he does cover lots of information during lecture. Overall he is very cool and will makes time for you
Lectures can be long, but I really liked Dr. Gildersleeve. This class was half online because of COVID-19, so this review is on the class before the pandemic. We had a paper on the lectures each week, so take notes. Every test is online. The weekly reading quizzes you can take as many times as you want until you get a good score. He is very funny!
Professor Gildersleeve teaches History very well. His class is extremely participation heavy, he expects you to form an opinion from every lecture, and be able to express that opinion in a clear and concise way. I would recommend him, but I wouldn't take him again because his lectures are extremely left side heavy. Very caring and understanding.
Professor Gildersleeve is a great and caring professor. I wish he focused on some of the positives aspects of the material but overall a good class.
HIS112 is an ELI course that involves a lot of reading! Weekly papers (roughly four or five total in a regular course). Only quizzes are the midterm and final. Required engagement on discussion boards (post only, no replies). Group project + individual projects as well. Occasionaly gets lost in email - may have to message twice to get a reply.
Not a balanced lesson plan at all
Professor Gildersleeve's class was so laid back. I took the 6 wk Jumpstart course this summer (summer before my hs senior year) and this class, although there were 2 books to read (+ the textbook for the tests and discussions) and a couple 1 pg/1 paragraph papers, was chill. 1 group project, 1 digital project, and TONS of extra credit chances. 9/10
He is a great professor if you really participate. There is a 500 word essay due every week plus 2,000 word at the end of the class. Luckily there is no tests or quizzes so if you do decent on the writing you will pass for sure. He is fair but be ready to write a lot.
I took Professor Glidersleeve's class in the spring of 2021. He is a great teacher who really cares about engaging the class. He pushes you to make and form your own critical thinking idea's about History. If you want to be successful in his class make sure you are engaging with him and the class.
Dr. Gildersleeve is a great history teacher I also took Political Science with him, his lecture are audio recording with PP presentation expected to listen to but honestly easy class just show up and participate. He has great story, no hw overload but that means the few assignments that he gives are worth a lot.
Gildersleeve is great! I had him for HIS 111 and 112 and he remembered me the second time around. He is so helpful and willing to chat about assignments during office hours if you are confused. On papers, he prepared us so much with outlines and drafts that it was an absolute breeze and History has always been my worst subject! He's also hilarious!
I would not take this class again nor any classes that he teaches. He lacks communication when you email him asking questions. His lectures are boring and his powerpoints lack what he is verbally saying. Let me save you the time and say find someone BETTER.
There is a midterm and a final exam. They are about 750-words minimum, no multiple choice. A pro about the class is that there is little to no homework. A con of this class is that HE NEVER REPLIES TO EMAILS!! Also, he will tell the class a certain assignment and the date it's going to be due but won't post it until about 2 nights before it's due.
He’s awesome, take his class.
Definitely one of the best professors I’ve had. Has a sense of humor which makes you want to come to class. While there is a lot of reading, non of it is boring. The main thing to know is do you’re homework!!! Homework and participation is key! 10/10 would recommend
Dr. G is a very amazing funny & cool professor who wants to help you succeed. As long as you have an informed opinion & participate in class discussions youll do great. Most of the class grade is on the final essay and outline/bibliography. My one gripe & why I put him at 4/5 is that he's terrible at responding to emails so heads up on that.
He's very reasonable. You'll have a reflection every week based on the textbook and his lectures but they're very duable.
He is really good at engaging with the class, makes learning history interesting, and overall, a great person. Do what your assigned and you'll really enjoy this class.
Dr. Gildersleeve, is a amazing history professor. His class and teaching style are very easy to understand and follow. He is very understanding when it comes to emergencies that happen in your life. He gives extensions on homework assignments if you are late and have good reasons. He cares deeply about his students. He is also very funny.
Okay so I am going to tell you the reality of it. Everyone loves this guy; he is funny and makes up your morning ready to learn. He tells you when the test and assignments are not 2 days before, but a whole week before. We are responsible for some to little things then we talk about it with him. He is great, funny, flexible and will answer.
It is an interesting experience. If you like reading articles and having an open discussion about the said articles TAKE HIM. If you like listening to lectures in class then I would not recommend. He has a good personality and has a self detrimental sense of comedy.
Ignore any posts discouraging you from taking a course with R.G. If you're trying to do zero work, this isn't the professor for you, but his expectations aren't remotely unreasonable. A bit reading heavy, but welcome to college. He is also highly personable and very funny. Hands down best class I've taken at NOVA and I'm not even a history major.
A nice & funny guy. His class is simple. There are readings to do before every class & a lecture video. As long as you do the readings you'll be fine. Just contribute to the discussion during class as he does not lecture. The only assignments are chapter & lecture quizzes. No midterm & the final exam is an essay. Highly recommend that you take him!
This professor was awesome! His inbox was always open and he was very clear on why you'd get the score you got. He definitely requires you to participate in class but it's normally pretty easy since the in-class section is structured like a conversation on the assigned reading. 10/10 would take again.
Now that I have taken two courses of his, I can say he is one of the best professors at NOVA. If you're looking to take a quick history course, because you don't like history and want to get it over with, take his course, he makes it that easy. His feedback helps you grow as an academic writer, and he's gotten better with answering emails!
This was an online (no lectures) class. He is a very easy grader, I did the bare minimum for most of my assignments and got a 99% final grade. He gives copy-paste feedback on assignments which was kind of funny. Very slow to grade, and it took emailing him two or three times before he responded. All of that is above average for a Nova Online class.
Overall a great professor! You can really tell his passionate about what he teaches which makes the lectures actually enjoyable.
Professor G is the most understanding professor I have ever had. He cares for his students and their mental health. He understands we have our own lives and personal problems. One great conversation and he will 100% make some sort of compromise with you. I hope everyone gets the chance to benefit and learn his passion on history!
His class was great. It was completely on Zoom, and you only had 8 non-timed quizzes with 5 questions each. There will be three group discussions and two 500-word papers. The midterm and final are both 1000 words, and he allows you approximately two 1/2 weeks to work on it. He is quite specific about how he wants the paper to look.
Dr. Gildersleeve is pretty much the best history professor you could ever ask for. His lectures are absolutely riveting, homework is very fair and reasonable, and the book is free. Just be sure to take notes on the lectures - difficult since they're so engaging - as the midterm and final exams (both of which are essays) depend heavily on them.
Kind, caring, and understanding. Overall great professor. Highly recommend
Great and caring teacher. Since it is a hybrid class and only meet once a week, there are lots of time to do the reading, the lecture, and the quiz. Very organized and explains topic really well.
This class is hybrid, so you have to do most of the work outside of class. It's heavily graded on quizzes and essays that are based on the lectures, so listening to it is mandatory. As long as you finish the quizzes, essays, and participate in class, you will probably get a good grade.
is a good professor, But gives lots of homework and lectures are too long
He the best history professor, took time to explain anything that was confusing/hard. The course is heavy on reading the book and listening to lectures, it is a discussion based class, come prepared to speak. hybrid so you meet once a week and do everything at home. Stay on top of everything. He is very organized. Though he takes a while to grade.
Great professor! No tests - instead he does essays and requires group participation. Everything is very clearly stated and always available for help outside of class. Do the work, read the textbook & pay attention to lectures and you'll be fine.
I've generally disliked history throughout my education and took this class solely for the credit. However, I left it with a desire to take another history class regardless of required credits solely because of professor Gildersleeve. He's a passionate and genuine professor, and I feel lucky to have stumbled across his class.
Professor Gildersleeve is very passionate about what he teaches making it enjoyable to learn. He is a very understanding person and will work with you. The assignments were manageable and fair. It consisted of 5 question quizzes and short essays. As long as you do your work, you will do well in the class.
Really great class, Prof. Gildersleeve, or Mr. G as he likes to be called, makes the class interesting with his enthusiastic lectures. There isn't a whole lot of assignments so the two exams do need prep for, but he gives good prep. Look forward to taking Mr. G again next semester. Participate people, it's history, it's a SOCIAL study.
Professor Gildersleeve was an amazing history professor. I took him over the summer since my friends previously had him and said he was a great professor. There is a decent amount of reading but doesn't give a heavy workload. He was very accessible outside of class and wants students to engage in meaningful and thoughtful conversations.
Professor Gildersleeve is an excellent teacher. His ability to keep the class engaging and interesting is insane. He's very understanding and willing to help out if needed. The only issue I've found is that he doesn't post his slides so either make friends in the class or always attend.
Dr.G is an amazing professor, for HIS 121 he made the textbook online and free, each week we were given an open note test on the reading, and we did and an annotation assignment relating to the topic, he is very passionate about history and is an amazing professor, I learned a lot in his class, I enjoyed listening!
He is very kind and very understanding when you talk to him about situations happening in your life. He kinda lacks on reading emails so if you need a response from him I suggest talking to him before or after class or during his office hours.
He is a very nice guy but not my favorite professor. Your supposed to take notes on chapter readings outside of class and then he'll lecture the exact same thing in class. Lectures are pretty boring and hard to follow along. He talks fast and doesn't have many words on the slide so it's hard to keep up. Final project and exam are not hard though.
I enjoyed Professor Gildersleeve's class! I took him on Zoom. There is a decent amount of reading, but his assignments are pretty standard and not overwhelming. He is lecture-heavy and didn't record the Zoom lectures, so make sure to take notes as they can be used on the midterm and final. Overall; he's a great professor and I would take him again!
im sure hes a great lecturer in person, but over zoom is another story. the class seems simple enough, but if lectures make or break a class for you, i suggest you look elsewhere.
Dr. G is the best professor.. Every week, there is a quiz from the chapter with 5 or 7 questions. He assigned listening to a podcast and writing a response of 250 words or more. The annotations are not hard at all. There is a final exam with a time limit. Be ready to discuss, after the lecture, what you did in your homework.
He's such an interesting lecturer and super cool guy, I learned a lot in his class and I'm not even the biggest history buff. There was a decent amount of homework (not all of which I did, hence the B), but if you actually do the work and put in the effort you'll be fine. I got a 95 on my final essay.
The two tests put together were worth half our grade, he's late posting stuff to Canvas sometimes, and if you miss ANY class you are going to suffer. However, he connects the course material into a web of greater ideas in a way that's really helpful, and also has phenomenal vibes when he lectures. Cool guy, I'd take him again in a heartbeat.
This professor was extremely hard to pay attention to during class. His lectures are not engaging and when the final mid term come along you have to re-teach yourself the entire class material just to barely pass. The exams consist of matching questions that are super vague that don't really make sense and not enough time to finish two essays.
His lectures are not engaging. When the midterm and final come up you have to re-teach yourself all the material. The exams are matching questions that are extremely vague and by the time your finished with those, you'll barely have time to finish the essay based questions. He also can have an attitude at times.
Dr. G is a great professor. Homework was easy enough if you just partially paid attention in lecture. Final project and exam were both fair and not that difficult. Late grader at times but that's my only minor complaint. Definitely would take again. If you just apply yourself a little bit it's an easy class in my opinion. Highly recommend
Dr Gildersleeve was an amazing lecturer. I felt he was very engaging and easy to follow along with. Although the slides he used didn't have a lot of information he was good at explaining things. You will have to take extensive notes during the lectures as he uses the lecture notes for the midterm and final.
Dr. Gildersleeve was my favorite professor across the two semesters that I had with him. His lectures are very thought provoking and meaningful. He grades not based off completion, but rather quality work. He could do better in replying to emails and providing feedback on assignments, but was always happy to discuss in detail with me in person.
goes in depth on lectures, so if you want someone who is passionate, take him.
Even though his lectures were long he made then fun. Free book, not to much homework, and the finals are not overly complicated. He made learning history a lot less boring then other teachers and professors I've had.
Dr. Gildersleeve was an amazing professor! I loved the Poster Project as our final, super fun
Really chill and nice
Very good professor.
Such an amazing professor! Dr. Gildersleeve is one of the best profs at NOVA, and his history classes are very engaging and well taught. I took three of his courses and loved them all. His lectures are incredible and full of material, and I'd recommend taking lots of notes. He's an excellent professor and you'll definitely enjoy his class!
Great professor, attend lectures and take notes and you will do great. Wish I had more electives that he taught so I could have him again.
Great professor, he knows a lot about history, and his classes are always interesting.
Amazing professor! Make sure to take notes in class, but he is willing to work with you if you don't understand a concept. Very nice person and highly recommend taking his class, definitely my favorite class I've taken at NOVA so far! Also the textbook is online and is incorporated into the textbook which makes homework pretty easy.
He reads straight off a transcript every class and just stands there. Midterm and final come from his lectures. No phones also no laptop unless your taking notes, If you like showing up, taking notes, and leaving, fine. But if you want a chill, engaging teacher, this isn't it. Attendance matters to him also.
super nice guy, some people had issues contacting him through email (he usually got back to me within 48 hours) so he is a little slow with replying but there isn't a whole lot in this course that requires that. Daily hw through the textbook linked on canvas and it was mega easy, no exams just projects. straightfoward and a lenient grader.
Excellent professor, very enthusiastic, good energy and fun. He teaches very well just make sure not to miss class and definitely take notes. The homework are very long but doable. Fair grader but not an easy A. You actually have to work for it. I would definitely take him again!
Lectures are long maek sure to take notes you need them for your final. come to class get your work done on time
Non stressful class, professors really great, lectures are very interesting. Open-note mid term and final. Only thing is people have lied a lot about their personal issues to skip things and get points back so it will be hard for him to believe you there.
Try to attend all classes because he doesn't post notes online. A very funny and kind professor! I recommend.
