Do Not Take This Class, I promise it sucks.
philosophy of asian martial arts-great course
an excellent educator, really great
No Comments
very interesting class, everything was out of the book, he clarifis everything!!
Did not like the class or the professor
Great teacher! Most useful course I took in 16 years of formal education.
Excellent professor. Course was not particularly easy, but professor was willing to help on any detail that was unclear from reading material. very thorough
This guy is an institution at UMBC, has been teaching this class for years. Tough, but you learn a lot!
He is a very intelligent man and demands a lot out of his students. If you are not willing to stand up to the challenge, don't take his classes. BUT, if you want to learn from someone who knows what he is talking about, go for it!
this guy is amazing! Like a clenched fist raised in the air but wuth a velvet glove over the abrasiveness. Amazingly intelligent, can come up with on the spot insight like few people I've ever met in life. Great politics too,
Wierd guy, but great professor.
one of the worst professors I have ever had.
He Knows much about the subject but makes it hard for the student to learn. He does not let the students keep graded exams. His final exam for the course consisted mostly of matierial that we were never had an exam on and only studied briefly.
I hated this class and the teacher. He was very unhelpful and made it uncomfortable to ask questions. Tests were difficult and it was hard to learn from your mistakes as he doesn't let you keep graded quizzes.
This class really helps you to think logically. Some People find it difficult to understand just because they don't seriously think about what he is talking. If you just need the credit, don't take this class. This class is for intelligent ppl.
Excellent course. Learn how to think clearly and logically.
Teaching is clear yet offensive to many, but for 'Critical Thinking', its only appropriate, as he is really good at dispelling myths and fallacies in our thinking. HOWEVER terribly arrogant and unapproachable! Makes fun of questions/issues raised in cl

What a angry man. Would not take another course offered by him. BTW, what is in that cup, coffee sure doesnt taste good after an hour and it wasnt steaming when he came in?
whoever doesn't like him because he's 'unapproachable', i say try harder. Don't look at just the exterior. He knows his stuff in Philosophy. Do your work and you'll learn a lot. He is actually very understanding.
Mr. T. is truly a teacher for intellects. People who have logical weaknesses are threatened by his assaults and take him to be mean. He wants you to think B4 you speak. NEVER EVER ask a question u didn't think about 1st! I spoke to him after class manytim

One of the best classes I have taken here. Very helpful. Noticed a dramtic change in my writing ability. Take the class, sit in the back and dont say anything, ask a question after class. He is a really nice guy, still see him and talk to him all the time
Very hard class. Very hard professor. I'm a fairly intelligent person and this class was so innecssarily difficult, it was frustrating. Didn't learn anything. Dropped out with the other 3/4 of the class. Majority got 30% on quizzes. One freak of nature was getting A's. It's still a mystery.

"Ah, I see there's a Ms. ---, who has dropped this course." ::looks at ---:: "What are you waiting for? Leave." <-- That pretty much sums him up. You'll love or hate him for the same reasons - I found his course extremely easy and very instructional. I've used the material often in biology courses.
Bottom Line: He knows his stuff and expects you to study & do the same. If you are religious it can be a challenging course that will either enhance or destroy your beliefs. Overall I learned a lot but this is not an easy class. In class he can be VERY condescending. Outside of class, he's great.
3/4th of the time we watched videos and very little lecture, but realy really hard exams. (Tip: Exam is the same for the past ...God knows how long semesters:) Gradign is different but fun. Good course to take. Personally a very nice person.
Awful class! Boring lecture and movies. Take lots of notes and write fast because he talks fast. USE THE STUDY GUIDE. Tons of reading and definitions (memorize all of them for the test)
All we ever did was watch movies that had nothing to do with class....he wasnt understanding at all...worst teacher i have ever had. DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!
Hardly teaches 20 minutes per class. The rest is all videos. Tests are from book and has nothing to do with videos generally. Class was so boring and since I had nothing else to do I found my girl friend in there. Grading is a little different than others, lets you take the test twice and averages it
If you are not a philosophy major, you will not enjoy him. A very old school professor who seems to memorize his class lectures from the 70s. Learn what is in the books for this class because he does not teach anything. Very difficult quizzes for a 100 level course. If you talk, know your facts!

The best professor I have ever had!
I once saw him make a student weep openly with nothing more than the sheer force of his critical thinking skills. He was right when he did it, too.
Roye is one of those old-fashioned gentlemen. He expects respect and for you to follow directions. Phil 146 isn't that hard a class. Just do exactly what he says and you'll do fine. Also, he lets you turn work in very late, or take quizes or tests late too
had him for logic and reason, he's really hard and really rude (but in a good way). didn't enjoy the class, but definitely enjoyed the way he humiliated students with his vicous rhetoric. if you have a thin skin...don't take the class...

He will eat you up and spit you out, but other than that he rules.
Very difficult class and he didn't make it any better. He picked on me constantly. The latter half of the class he didn't teach, we just watched very boring videos. I ended up dropping the class.
He's one of those pretentious atheist philisophy professors that doesn't let you argue with him. Either you need to be an atheist skeptic **** like him or else you fail. I AM an atheist skeptical **** so I got an A ;). I felt bad for those kids that disagreed with him though. Luckily his false arugment class was analytical. Anything abstract I would probably hate the guy. No room to argue. His way or the high way.

Worst teacher I have ever taken at UMBC!
don't ever be late. just reads his lectures out loud, probably straight from the internet
Just sit down, be quiet, and listen. Dont ask questions or he will make u feel dumb, and dont argue cuz he wont change his mind. Oh, and he wears his pants up to his chest.
Definitely one of the worst classes I took at UMBC. The quizzes in the class NEVER made as clear sense as you needed them to to ace them and likewise for his exams. He also went over material fairly quick so you never really understood what was going on. Monologue-type lecture only since he liked to be done suick.
terrible
This guy obliterates anyone who challenges him. He will help you if you need it. If you do what he says you will get an A. Cool guy, very sharp.
If you get on his bad side, BEWARE. Just sit in class, don't say a word, do the worksheets before class, and pay attention when he goes over them. Many quizzes = many chances to get a good grade. Class is usually over in 20 mins. If he does give a "lecture", it will be hard to pay attention becuase the topics are boring haha. He hates religion.
I have never taken a Philosophy course in my life and made the mistake of signing up for this one. I was angry that my counselor didn't suggest PHIL 100. There are many definitions to memorize in this class and the examples given on worksheets don't relate at all to those on quizzes. 10 quizzes total, 2 extra credit quizzes, and boring lectures.
An professor i know refers to this man as "The angriest professor alive." Terrible professor - no philosophy discussed only what HE thinks. Be prepared for sermons. No discussion encouraged. Rude to students. Tests are impossible. Does not curve. B is possible if you memorize the book. Lecture material account for ~12% of exams but you must attend
You have to already be able to demonstrate some critical thinking before starting this course. Most of the material is right off of his notes and fast short lectures. Attend every class, otherwise you will miss something. No tests, 12 quizes (+ 2 xtra credit quizes), thats all. Many people are intimidated by him, but speak up in class if you need to.
If you believe anything New Age with faith, you'll be in for a rude awakening -- you'll regret taking this class (as well as PHIL 146); you may even do poorly. [In fact, that's the MAIN reason people hate him! Most of the test questions come from the Schick & Vaughn text and he uses similar tests every time. He also offers a way for you to boost

He hates believing in God. Class is usually over in 20 minutes. He wears his pants like Steve Erkel. His quizzes are failed easily. He makes you feel like an idiot if you ask any questions.
This guy enjoys using class time to preach against religion. He usually ends class in 20 mins yet he takes attendance before the class starts at times. He devoted an entire 45 minute period to denouncing faith in God. He will tell you that any argument you make is a fallacy. Don't even waste time with this guy or with this course. Horrible!
The students who had the hardest time in 146 were also the most religious. You probably shouldn't take the class if you believe in god(s). If you do take it, don't argue with Templeton. It usually doesn't seem like he's right since he's no good at explaining why, but trust me, he is.
he is a good professor but his teaching techniques just don't work for me
I thought he was a good teacher but you need to pay attention, take notes, the usual and you'll do well.
Either you will love his class or hate it. I found the class interesting but had to work at a higher level than for my other courses. If you study, learn the material, and go to class, you will do fine. If you are someone who believes in religion or god(s) beware however that he is an athiest and likes to denounce religion, which is awsome to watch
Terrible instructor (he's not actually a professor). Rude, especially to those who are religious. Even I, an atheist, am offended by him. No opinion matters but his own, questioning it leads to ridicule. Discussion in general is rare, mostly just monotonous lectures. Tests are difficult at best, easily failed.
Phil. of Martial Arts: Interesting Idea. Highly opinionated and poorly taught. I just saw him dock 2 girls 3 pts for wearing a beret in class. If you think only how he thinks, you'll succeed. He won't send email alerts for cancellations, but when you ask when he's available, he says, "read the syllabus". He enjoys aggravating you. Be warned.
Took it during the summer. He is a very intelligent professors and knows EXACTLY what he's talking about. Arguing with him will get you nowhere because he is very dedicated to his convictions. Not a ridiculously easy class but if you have an even minor interest you will find the material interesting. The videos were a little outdated though.
Horrendous, worst I've had. He's a foaming-at-the-mouth athiest who spends too much time beating up on religion, which shouldn't be allowed. He really needs to be stopped. I could care less if you're atheist, but you can't just be intolerant without provocation. His test questions are too vague and he won't ever see your side of it. AVOID!
he is very annoying, wicked and bitter, hen is never ready to answer your questions or even show interest in how low the class grades are. the course was poorly taught and also has zero clarity about philisophy of asian martial arts. i would strongly advise not take this course if you don't have to.
Easily the worst professor I've had at UMBC or anywhere else. Completely unreceptive to questions asked in class ..he told one student to "look at his handout later" and refused to answer the question. Would it be too hard for him to actually make sure his students understand his long-winded ramblings? Inexcusable for a 100 level class.
Doesn't know how to teach. Very bitter and does not like people asking questions. a student in the class asked him a question and he just look at the handout. I went to his office hours to ask him questions and he told me he doesn't like people asking him questions outside of class. Doesn't explain and he reads of the handout instead of explaining.
I think he hates teaching. Always grumpy and He teaches this class as if we are in grad school. Doesn't explain anything. Only reads from the handouts. Even when you ask a question, he explain not in his words but from the handouts. This is 100 level class, he should know how to teach. Never take a class with him. You will waste your time.
Very strict. Has clear issues of insecurity. Immoral even though he teaches Philosophy.
Unapproachable!!! It seems like he really hates teaching...but then again I do not think he could be accepted anywhere else. Does not accept questions and will not answer them. Extremely arrogant. I saw him take points off a students quiz because he kept writing for 5 seconds after he said time is up. You have to be arobot to speak to him. Avoid!!!
Had him for Philosophy of Sex, I really like the way he talks very into the topic but wont answer any questions in class. Just read the book and you'll do fine, Exams are multiple choice with quotes right from the book. u can correct every exam if u like with open book for half credit on each correctly changed answer, this really helps u learn it
Do not take this class with him unless you absolutely have to. If you need a General Requirement, choose something else.
This guy scared the bejesus out of me. One day he asked (screamed at) the class to prove the existence of God. The hard core Christian in the middle of the 2nd row, wearing a Jesus tee, turned beet red. We were silent hoping that would hurry us through this long awkward moment. Tough class, be ready to get shaken up. I learn how to debate better :)
Don't take this class if you can take another. This teacher is vague, doesn't like to answer questions and doesn't take time to teach the material.
Easy, easy course. Pay attention, use the guide. Lets class out almost two hours early every day. But, you really don't learn as much as you would if it were harder. If you already have a good background inf philosophy this teacher will fill in the gaps.
This is the worst professor I have ever taken. Seriously. He is a liberal atheist, who has no respect for his students religious beliefs. He claimed that his intentions were not to try and convert anyone in the class. He insulted my beliefs every class. He said, and I quote, "Religion is a bad habit." The best part about his class was leaving it.
Bad professor. Very redundant, old, and senile. He served in Vietnam, and (I'm sorry to say) but probably suffers from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. He comes into class with an attitude, yells at students who ask questions, and treats his students with the utmost disrespect.
I spent 5 years at UMBC and this is the only professor I can actually say was bad. Ridiculously arrogant. Ironic how 80% of the grade in a class called "Critical Thinking" is memorization of terminology you'll never use later. I would recommend reading or sleeping, but he docks a nontrivial amount of your grade for that. Bad teacher and person.
Professor has easy testing method. He is straightforward and his classes are mostly lecture. He will call you out if you sleep or talk but if you stay on his good side he is a great asset to you as a professor. Grading is clearly explained and never changes.
Horrible instructor. Calls students "idiot" and frequently shows his dislike for the entire class. The first two quizes had ok scores, but after that, the average dropped to about 52%. Can't teach, expects people to know everything already.
This class is for someone truly want to learn not for anyone just going for the credits. He is highly intelligent but he tents not to break down the material and rather expect you to take time thinking. You have to be open-minded or you learn nothing.
Avoid. Attendance is mandatory, but barely anything from the lecture is on any exam. Instead the exams are almost entirely based on the readings, which you do not discuss in class. He basically hates you already and won't answer questions. He just reads his [boring] lecture and you go. I don't understand why he still has his job.
AVOID this teacher if possible. Exams are without a doubt way more difficult than they need to be and don't seem to test our (the students) knowledge of the material accurately. Turns simple and easy material into perilously difficult exams for no apparent reason.
Don't be put off by all the bad ratings. I'd bet most of these are religious people and it is true that Mr. Templeton is a staunch atheist. Religion is a touchy hot button and will make it so a fair rating is impossible. Not hard material at all. If you can forget your way of thinking you may be able to learn something.
He is the worst teacher I have ever had. Clearly has no interest in students. Thinks the entire world is full of idiots. Guess what Mr., if you are so intelligent why are you a part time professor at UMBC? He is extremely arrogant and just plain rude but expects you to be polite to him at all times. I feel sorry for his relatives....avoid him.
If you're planning on taking this class, don't. The teacher is uncompromising and difficult. The quizzes are impossible even if you do study. Questions are frequently met with scrutiny and there is an air of tyranny at the front of the class. You will not pass.
Yeah he's an athiest and if it gets brought up in class he makes his opinion clear;I personally am a christian and found it a little annoying how close minded he was but has nothing to do with his competency to teach the class.Class was not difficult, if you have half a brain you won't have to study. Got an A w/ maybe 4hr time spent out of class
His class isn't easy. Whenever you take a quiz, you might as well just flip a coin to see if you passed/failed. He is an atheist. Who cares. That's his view; let him have it. However, I have found this course helpful in recognizing weak arguments, which I realized are everywhere. Take this if you're willing to study a lot(his lectures are boring).
Book is somewhat helpful though we didn't read over the whole thing.Only read description and examples. He hands out a lot of papers. He only has 3 extra credit quizzes. One wrong answer can end you up with -5 to 7 points. Not much half credit.I feel like the class is more on your opinion.Class mandatory. We get out after a half hour of class.Dont argue
Terribly hard class, even if you study the subject is very confusing and there is no black and white between different types of philosophical fallacies. Even if you do study absolutely everything (which takes a long time) you might get a C, or a B if you're lucky. Don't plan on getting a good grade in this or getting something out of it.
Completing the homework & studying for 30 minutes was all I needed to do per week. Though I failed a couple quizzes, the extra credit quizzes he gave were enough to get me over a 100% in the class. As long as you show up every day & aren't late you can get the extra credit points and get an A.
Templeton uses his text book, speaks clearly in lecture, and gives easy tests but these standards, while necessary, are not sufficient conditions to judge the quality of the professor. The problem is he is an egoistic man who immediately dismisses other people who disagrees with him, especially when the disagreement is reasonable.
He comes across as standoffish, though he is a really nice guy. He doesn't dismiss dissenting opinions, he encourages people to question what he has said. He does however dismiss opinions that aren't well thought out or are unreasonable. The class is relatively boring, but will not take up much of your time. Easy A.
Absolutely no interest or respect for the subject matter. Knows nothing but the textbook about it (very poorly written, do not expect to be examining any primary sources or religious writing. It reads like an elementary history book.) Intentionally vague in his questions, supports a blanket rejection of Asian thought.
Very boring class, he comes off as rude and pretty much against debate. If he likes you he is nothing but nice to you. This class required a lot of memorization. A lot of people dropped because of there poor quiz grades. He is a gentleman and expects his students to show the same respect. Requires more studying than i anticipated but i did learn.
Overall, probably the worst professor I have had at UMBC. He insulted multiple students and was pretty intellectually dishonest in debates and, especially, presenting religious ideas.
Mr. Templeton does not tolerate laziness, lack of preparation, does not coddle you, and does not provide positive reinforcement without merit. He requires you to be informed for debate; arguing your Google research is a non-starter. This class requires adult maturity for maximum benefit. Don't be a petulant entitlement turd and you'll excel.
Great class!!! Great instructor!!!
Took his class twice my freshman year and was not prepared for all of the work. I actually did worse the second time around ... If you have a good memory and are looking to take a class that is straight memorization, this is the class for you. If you are looking for an easy A, don't bother.
I enjoyed His no nonsense approach and you have to keep up.
Professor Templeton takes seriously the tenets of critical thinking as a means of living; he will not pay credence to fads or fallacies. He believes the classroom is a place for serious discourse and where all ideas should be challenged. If you don't actually want to think critically, don't take this class, you will be called out and rightly so.
One of the best professors or teachers I ever had at any level. Dedicated to the material and expanding students worldview.
