hist. of music--very amusing, entertaining, interesting class; not to be missed
Must take classes
Most animated and exciting professor ever!! Take her classes!!!
be warned she does not take music apprecaition to be a joke
overall good, but often annoyingly condescending
One of the rare great professors at BU, She is an engaging and dynamic teacher
PASSIONATE teacher...quite critical, but very caring. Demands hard work
Easily one of the best professors at BU. Demanding but the rewards are priceless
Love this teacher - hard work, but well worth the effort!
biting sarcasm, not helpful, suggested that i take the class even though i proved to be way over my head, course description didn't mention the insane amount of time you'd have to dedicate to the class. this class should come with a warning label!
Sometimes obnoxious, but funny. Excellent teacher. Cares about material and students.
Her lecture for Core was informative, but ruined by her contemputous attitude towards the students. She does know her stuff, but it doesn't mean the rest of the world is too stupid to understand it.
I learned music since I was little, I taught myself how to play the piano even. I respect music LESS because of her, she didn't like my exam paper, my english sliped through the system. ****ing I got A's in english. Worst teacher!! Meaningless class.
the best professor i've had at bu (next to tony barrand) you have to pay attention and do the listening hw, and the paper requires hours of library work, but you learn a lot. she can be condescending, but only if she doesnt think youre trying. funny
condescending attitude, but had to respect her knowledge and experience. class is harder than it appears - but worthwhile in the end.

Mixed emotions. There's no question she can be condescending and arrogant, and will make fun of you aloud in class (this happened to me). She's brilliant though, knows the material inside and out, and I guess that's why her patience runs thin.
Excellent!

Definitely one of the more interesting classes I have taken in college. Wates is a bit eccentric most of the time, but you get used to it. Her oddities are compensated by her passion in teaching music. No complaints here.
serious, serious attitude problem. you learn a lot but she's out to scrap your gpa so look out. picks favorites and can really be nasty sometimes.
Wonderful teacher, just don't go into this class with the intention of slacking - you will be unpleasently surprised. These two classes made me love classical music!
she picks favorites and doesn't care about you if you are not one of her favorites. the work load is very heavy. and if you don't know what you are talking about you shouldn't participate in class... but you don't get a good grade if you don't participate
A very unique woman. She's more of an entertainer than a teacher, which is appropriate for a music class. Her way of presenting the material makes it stick; you won't soon forget her interpretive dance to Haydn's Symphony No. 94, 1st Movement. :)
Quizzes get easier. Final paper is difficult, and i thought she graded rather hard. Very condescending at times, and laughs at all her own jokes. Office hours are helpful

Don't make the mistake of thinking that any of her courses are blowoff classes. They're not easy As, I worked hard for my B+ in this class! But she's an awesome teacher, a very funny woman and you will learn a lot.
Salty sometimes, but once you win her over you are golden. participating in class helps a lot too
pretty good. she tells good jokes. definitely not a blowoff class. you have to work hard and study.
This teacher is completely unethical in her practice of picking favorite students. I was so excited for this class, but now I am not because she picks on me constantly with snide comments and even rolling her eyes. This is not the way a teacher should act.I would never take a class with her again.
I had the same experience as some other people- for no reason she decided that she didn't like me at the beginning of class. She made the class hell for me because it. I would avoid her...
Professor Wates is great! She makes the class fun - even when the music gets a bit boring. The class seems easy at first, but the quizzes get harder and the term paper is a killer. She does not pick favorites, she just calls a lot on the students that she knows are active in the class.
She picks favorites (mainly white boys) and if youre not a boy she wont acknowledge you. she'll interrupt you when you raise your hand and disagree with everything you say. Also, very rude after class and during office hours...she made one of my friends cry after seeing her.
People who complain that Prof. Wates picks on them are the ones that aren't applying themselves in class. She will love you (and you will love her!) if you come to class regularly, participate, ask questions, do the reading and know what you are talking about. Otherwise, she'll call you on it.
Wates is rude and talks down to her students. I took 118 also and thought she was ok then, but for all of you people who have not taken a class with her where there are less than 20 people, have no idea what she can be like, so don't make judgements until you truly know. BEWARE
she was very nice to me when i went to see her at office hours. this class is difficult. it is by no means a blow-off class. study hard from the textbook and take notes in class if you wish to succeed. also, start your research paper way ahead of time. its no fun to be doing that last minute.
A fine, unerstanding funny professor. Not a walk in the park, but SHE TELLS YOU EXACTLY WHAT TO DO TO GET AN A! And it's not BS, and it's not all that hard.
Professor Wates has been one of the most enjoyable professors I have had in college. She's not easy, but we're in college. Spoonfeeding is for kids, and she expects students to act like adults. Be prepared for class; she'll tell you exactly what you need to study for the next class.
she is sooo unfair and clearly she has favorites
Scary class. It should be interesting but if you aren't a deep thinker she is in love with she will tear you apart and make you feel like crap. This is not an english class yet she will stop you mid-sentence to correct your grammar and pronunciation. I am scared to go to class each day bc of that
simply the best. speaking as someone who wants to become a professor, this woman taught me how to teach. and, no, that doesn't include picking favorites or talking down to students. she's energetic, witty, passionate about what she teaches, and SO receptive to her students. take her classes, NOW!
sure, professor wates will correct your grammar and if you can't handle that, maybe you shouldn't take her classes. but that doesn't make her a bad professor! she loves what she does, and if you're interested in the subjects, i would definitely recommend her.
Prof. Wates is an excellent teacher. She expects students to come to class prepared, and, if you are, you will love it. If not, you will complain that she is unfair and picks on students. Prof. Wates makes it crystal clear what it takes to get an A - all you have to do is listen and do the work.
Amazing, amazing woman. I will be friends with her for a long time. You will have to be serious about the class to do well, but she is more than willing to help you if you just show some interest.
Roye Wates is one of the most charismatic, dedicated professors I have had the privelege to know during my undergraduate career. She has high expectations of her students-- as any good professor should. Her occasional "tough love" approach is just what I and some of my spoiled peers needed!
Be warned. At first i thought highly of Wates, thinking she was a grandmotherly figure, but she turned out to be the worst teacher i have ever had at BU. She is so passionate about the subject, that she thinks herself an expert, all other opinions donot matter, all other interpretations of music (which is subjective) does not matter.
Please avoid her unless you love humanities. She will rip you apart if you just listen to the music and don't analyze every single note before each class and are ready to discuss. Participation is 33% of the grade! For a divisional class, you need to know how to think like a humanities major in order to do well.. or just suck up to her and agree
awfully dreadful lady. Scares you but you still have to go to class because attendance is required. Expects you to have brilliant answers but doesnt expect you to be knowledged in music beforehand. Stopped me from wanting to take another music class with her ever again!
If you came to college to LEARN, then take a class with Roye Wates. She will challenge you to think (which, obviously, some of the wastrels who gave her poor ratings did not appreciate), and she will impart some of her passion for music to her students. Marvelous professor!
Professor Wates loves what she does and is an excellent prfessor. I have very much enjoyed her class and learned a lot. However if you think it is an easy class it is not; but it is a class in which you learn a lot.
Prof Wates is an amazing teacher. She is excited about what she does and loves her work. She's very clear and very helpful when you need it. Also, the workload is mostly easy and as long as you go to class she'll love you. Take her classes, she is a wonderful teacher.
i hate her w/ my guts!
She is really into the music, but class is tedious to sit through. I constantly have to chew gum to stay awake (which she doesn't allow by the way). The class should be named Music History and Theory, instead of Music Appreciation which makes it sound easy. Do not take this class unless the title I gave above sounds appealling to you!
I enjoyed this class a lot more than I expected plus it's boosting my GPA. If you need to fulfill a humanities i'd recomend this class.
BE WARNED. Worst learning experience I've had in my entire life. Dreadful woman who is personally insulting to every student, and tells the entire class everyone's grades. (This is not a joke, she photocopies papers w/ names & grades, and passes them out) She thinks she's better than you and the only way to get an A is to grovel. NOT WORTH IT.
One of the most unfair professors, I have known. She favors white males, especially frat boys. If you are a girl, don't take this class, she only embarass girls. Be careful with her grading also, because even if you got a B or above on all your quizs and exam, if she doesn't like you, she will give you an F on the term paper, lowering your grade
In class right now as a matter of fact...and I hate every single second of it. Not only is the class boring, but it has made me hate music, not appreciate it!
HORRID
She will act like this is the only class you are taking and is unsympathetic if you are unable to participate 100% all the time. She is condescending and patronizing, and demands too much -I do less work in my grad classes. It will be unfortunate if you are not one of her favorites, because she'll rip apart what you think are insightful comments
These people are insane. Wates is hilarious in class and really really really into what she teaches. She knows her stuff and the classes are interesting and easy. Great humanities courses to take. She has some funny old-fashioned rules, but is mostly just joking around a lot and trying to get people to participate and have fun. She's awesome.
Do. Not. Take. This. Class.
Prof Wates is not for everyone, but there's absolutely no reason to dismiss her as a teacher. She's an excellent teacher to people who respond to her, whether naturally or with a little effort of their own, but it seems that 85% of those who take her classes want an easy A, and don't make that effort. It's a shame, because she's got a LOT to offer
Some people think that she is intimidating and all, which she can be, at times, but I think that if you are truly interested in the subject and are willing to put in some effort, you should be fine
A very straight-forward course; just follow directions meticulously and you'll be fine. You don't actually have to do the music listening assignments in order to keep up, but they're very enjoyable to experience. Participation gives you EXTRA points.
Took this class a couple years ago at BU, and still remember it and Dr. Wates as one of the highlights. Has a passion for the subject, and taught me to look at opera in a totally new light. The class is hard work, and you have to put in the effort, but it's worth it, and you'll learn a lot. Fantastic professor!
Professor Wates is original but in no way a bad choice. An easy class if you do the work about 5-6 quizzes during the semester (10 Questions on the reading and 10 on listening). A final 7 pages paper about a piece of music of your chosing. Difinitely a great class BUT be on time, do not walk in front of her , talk, drink or wear a hat in class.
Wonderful Professor. Lectures are interesting and her sense of humor is hysterical. Demands respect and knows how to run a good class and lecture. Knows her**** and doesn't mess around. Go to class, do the work, participate and you'll be good to go but if you're a lazy ass things aren't going to go so well for you.
She prefers people who participate in class. It's not an easy class, but I learned a lot from it. She's nice if you get to know her and has a good sense of humor.
I loved the class but it's very challenging. I have a musical background and I found it hard, I felt so bad for the people who didn't come with any background at all. I love opera now though, so I guess she accomplished her mission. Don't know if I would take another class with her though. She is quite old fashioned.
Runs discussions badly, leaves no room for interpretation in assignments making them not so useful, writes assignment prompts incoherently. Bullied one of my friends into dropping the class because they came in on the third day when they could have easily caught up. Overall attitude is self satisfied and hinders interest in the class.
Professor Wates is by far the best professor I met at BU. It is true that she does not suffer fools gladly, but she shouldn't! This is college, people! She holds her students to a high standard, which is really the best thing for them. Plus, she genuinely cares about her students as people. Get to know her! You'll like her!
great professor!
Doesn't make a lot of sense. Notes are quite random. Talks down to students. Doesn't care about your opinion. Thinks she's the best thing since sliced bread.
She IS the best thing since sliced bread! I loved the two classes I've had with her, and she even remembers me when I pass her in the hallway. Sweet lady, and great teacher.
This "teacher" can be summed up very simply: Self-loving-know-it-all. Do not take this if you don't like being abused.
She's a cranky old woman who knows her stuff and wants you to know it too. Her quizzes are doable if you study, and the paper is a lot of work but is reasonably graded. She's really full of herself, which is annoying, but every once in awhile she'll do something funny enough to let you forgive her. Basically, it's not easy, but it is survivable.
I have taken two classes with her (MU 118 and MU 229) and I am about to take a third one, the Mozart one (in the fall). If you haven't read her Mozart book, you should, it is quite entertaining and interesting. Her class is basically meant for people with taste, and people who have a developed ear i.e. who wear raised with classical music.
Very conservative, old, white southern woman. Very intelligent. Expects you to write a PERFECT paper. Classes put me to sleep. No drinking beverages, chewing gum, slouching, or wearing hats in class. MUST suck up to her. Can criticize harshly. Material painful to get through for the average student. STRONGLY DON'T RECOMMEND taking this course.
Wates' class can be very boring at times. She is very old-fashioned and it takes some getting used to. Do well on the quizzes and try your best on the paper (she grades those harshly). This course is harder than it may seem. She can become very critical, but you'll need to get to know her (kiss her behind - a lot!!) for a good grade. Good luck.
If you planned on taking this class as a HU requirement, do yourself a huge favor and DON'T. She has little patience, is extremely boring, and can be brutally honest or just plain mean. This is unfortunate b/c you need to get to know her personally for a grade boost. Quizzes, attendance, participation, and a difficult paper make up your grade.
Terrible, just terrible. Material is dry. Struggle to stay awake in class. Guaranteed you will dread walking into that class and will hate yourself for having registered for it.
Worst teacher I have ever had at BU. Boring, conservative, rude, don't kiss up to her, that is giving her what she wants. DO NOT take this class, you will regret it for so long.
This class was absolutely horrible, I have never rated a teacher before but she was too bad to not say anything. She is a self-loving, boring, favorite picking teacher. If you do not kiss her butt, or worship classical music, you're screwed. Even if you do you're still screwed. I took this for a HU credit. SO not worth it. GET OUT NOW
Wates is an awesome professor. Here quizzes are straightforward; the most straightforward I have ever experienced at BU. The course requires you to always be attentive and study the music; definitely not impossible to get an A. Term paper is intense but she has a special deal that gives you an automatic A if you get an A- or above on the paper AND
Professor Wates is remarkably knowledgeable, and she has her funny moments. I found the listening aspect of her quizzes difficult because you must truly be able to put into practice the concepts she teaches. Paper grading is merciless; I slaved away only to receive a B+, and I genuinely love classical music. Wates can be quite intimidating.
I don't understand why students say she's funny - she's really not at all. They've apparently never had truly funny professors and I pity them. Here's my advice: Don't take this course. It's that simple. There are plenty others. Unless, of course, you're masochistic. Then by all means go ahead.
DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE! she is the toughest grader on the term paper which is a third of your grade. i happened to see most of the term papers and final grades and the average grade for the term paper turned out to be C/C+ and the average overall grade to be C+/B-. no matter how hard you try, she's out to get you in any way possible. DO NOT TAKE!
She's a dream, what can I say? People who take this class expecting a cakewalk are going to be disappointed, but if you actually make some effort instead of basking in your own entitlement, you WILL, ABSOLUTELY, enjoy any of her classes. She's brilliant, and passionate about what she teaches.
Unless you are interested in pre-classical music, avoid this class. It will be difficult and laborious for marginally interested students, and Wates will become unbearable at times. She pontificates often, is unclear at times, and difficult to listen to. The class itself is quite difficult too. Do not take with the hope of an easy A. won't happen.
People will say that she is mean and a bad professor, but my guess would be that these are the people who expected the class to be easy. Her class is not easy by any means, so don't expect it to be just because it's music. She is stern but fair, one of the most knowledge-filled person ever and will leave you educated in music and beyond.
Her quizzes are tough, they're only 20 questions which makes it hard to score well. Though I got used to her style and improved. by the end i projected my grade to be around a B/B+, but she bumped me up to an A-. So she really does notice participation. she decided during Thanksgiving our final would be optional so hopefully she'll keep do that for
A professor told me today that a past CFA student took Wates' class. She got a D. She stated that Wates had an awful personality. As a CFA student, I'm sure she understood music. With that said, I strongly discourage from taking this course unless you really want to hate your semester. You have been warned.
You will either love her or hate her. But most likely HATE her. She is cocky and cranky. She is strict. She's just awful. Worst mistake of my college career. Don't make the same mistake - seriously. If you're smart, you will take this advice. I have no idea what all the smiling faces are for. I suppose they're from "those students" at BU.
Don't expect any of her classes to be easy, but she really teaches you how to listen to music well. Her papers are always in the same format, so if you catch onto what she's looking for, you'll do fine. MU118 was my favorite, MU229 a close second, and MU117 my least favorite.
I think a lot of people in this class take it because it's called "music appreciation" and they think it's going to be easy. It's easier if you have some sort of musical background. Her personality is hit or miss. I personally think she's hilarious and she's certainly a wealth of knowledge. Her love for music is inspiring.
I took this class because I am a non-music major and thought it would be interesting. I wasn't expecting an easy A but she is very passive aggressive. She encourages students to ask questions but when you do, she snaps back. She is not encouraging at all. She didn't take into consideration the effort that I put into the class. do NOT take this
A great class and a great professor. Just be prepared to do the work(mostly listening to classical music) and to show up.
If you don't enjoy classical music, don't take MU117. Prof. Wates is a bit intimidating, but she's a nice woman. I do believe that she pays more attention to men. The tests and quizzes were straight from the book and assigned listening. As is with most classes, if you study, you do well. The paper isn't too hard-just follow her guidelines.
Prof. Wates was the best teacher I EVER had. I graduated from BU in 2004, and I still remember her classes and use the knowledge I learned in her class. A fantastic teacher, and with most, what you put into the class is what you get out. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
Excellent Teacher! Must attend her class!!!
Absolute worst teacher I've ever had at BU. She says that you don't need any prior music knowledge to take her course, and then has you read musical notes. She gives a quiz every Tuesday that is very detailed and tricky. She's also a terrible grader, and the essay she requires you to write is essentially a book. This class'll take up all ur time.
I took Dr. Wates' course over 50 years ago (in 1966-68) as part of BU's Division of General Education. Although, I was not her best student, she instilled in me a love for classical music, particularly the works we studied, which I listened to on the second floor of Mugar Library and continue to enjoy to this day.
