He is really good at helping students in office hours
Best acct prof I've had. He likes his Tommy's
No Comments
he really plays favorites and this is not the class to zone out in. you're always doing something, wether it be in class assignments or going up on the board. but there are a lot of chances to get a good grade and he's great with "adjusting" grades
he is very helpful to students who ask for it
He is a really good professor. Those who are taking BUAD 305 will learn a lot from him since this will be your first semester at SC
Davila has an unconventional style of teaching, but it is generally clear. He is a very nice guy and willing to help if you ask. To do well in this class you must attend and participate. Take this class with him!
You have to go to class and he calls on you and puts you on the spot a lot so you have to pay attention at all times. He gives a lot of quizzes but they are all group ones and are graded easier than the tests. He goes over all hw which is nice. Midterm isnt to bad but final is hard. somewhat a lot of homework. Expects you to know things.
One of the best professors at USC, if you want to learn about business and accounting this is the professor to take. Class is fairly difficult and you are expected to be there and participate, but it's not a waste of time doing so. Accounting has never been so interesting.
Puts ppl on the spot, makes ppl feel dumb. Quizzes & exams r challenging. Plenty of hw, but you get full credit for effort on the hw which is nice. All in all, I wouldn't recommend.
Nice man but sometime he does put people on the spot. He gives a lot of opportunities for people to do the problems in front of class and go through hw all the time which is good. Yet test was difficult and you are expected to fully understand materials talked about before next class.
Great lecturer - never a dull moment due to always putting students on the spot in class and having them do problems on the board then explaining "conceptually, not mechanically" of acct. However, is VERY UNORGANIZED and scattered (unusual for an acct prof?)Depends fully on his TA for grading. If you are going into Leventhal take him.
Davila takes accounting to a whole other level. For non business majors his class is just ridiculous. He expects you to know things he hasnt even taught you and constantly brings you back to middle school days where he loves to put students on the spot which does nothing but embarrass them and make them look dumb. Not helpful at all in office hours
He is COOL. Knows the material very well. Lectures are very organized. Pay attention at class and do a lot of practice. Talk with him, he gives very good advice.
You won't get bored because if you look bored you'll get put on blast. Really interesting teaching style basically hopes you make a mistake so he can teach others what not to do. Jumps around a lot and there's a lot of material to cover. A bit disorganized and the exams are a lot more complicated than the book.
Excellent teacher. If you want to actually learn about accounting then take him. He stresses basics a lot to make sure you understand them then speeds it up. He pretty much believes if you can teach it to someone else then you know the material so he forces you to participate. He WILL call on you at some point no matter what. Some pple hate him tho
He teaches so quickly at a fast pace. He makes you attend class everyday and he will mark you tardy yet when he is late he doesn't do anything. A LOT of group work. Bad, mean and he is not helpful at all.
The guy is a self-righteous its his way or the highway. Office hours are more of an interrogation than helpful. Knows the material real well. Because of his personality its difficult to ask questions. Don't recommend his class
I really enjoyed Davila as a teacher. He is one of the few teachers where I actually learned and enjoyed all the material, not just memorized. Not the easiest to get an A, but also hard to get lower than b-. Would recommend.
Very fair. Lectures are well organized, not an easy class but tests are only based on what he has taught in class.
DAVILA IS MY FAVORITE PROFESSOR IN USC!!! He know course materials extremely well, make everything really clear. It is the first class that I don't have to review crazily before tests. you just feel confident that you have got the knowledge on the class. Umm advice, still review and prepare for the test seriously. his exam is not that easy..
Probably the hardest/worst professor I've ever had. Although he is very educated, it is impossible to ask question and when you do he never responds at that moment (which leads you to forget). Although I have attended every single class so far, I still do not understand the subject matter. I DO NOT RECOMMEND him as a professor.
Davila is an interesting bloke. Classes are interesting, quizzes are made to be easy and helpful. Midterms are hard, but curved fairly. No complaints. Would take him again 5/5 times.
He's pretty straightforward, rude at times but not really sweet during office hours. The quizzes are easy usually group quizzes. Midterm was semi-hard, and final was worse it had two parts to it. Study from the handouts and the book, and it'll be bearable. There is one excel project and one group case/presentation which you'll be ranked by ur clas
I know your a transfer, but seriously, act like you are a USC Business student and you will be fine. Expect the exact results of what you put in. If you want to pass go to class, ask questions, make sure he knows your name, and do the homework. It's that simple but you won't do it. I dare you to be successful. I was a transfer too. Fight On!
I like Prof. Davila because he teaches the concepts, not simply the mechanics. He seems to care about preparing students for the real world. He can be a bit of a grump at times, but generally he's a nice man and has a sense of humor. This course isn't terribly difficult, but it moves very quickly, so you need to be able to keep up (just like life).
I hated going to class bc of his teaching style of putting students on the spot. There are group quizzes every week. There is also a group projectpresentation. Make sure to choose a smart group. The midterm wasn't bad but there just wasn't enough time to complete the final. For the most part, tests are based on the class handouts. Easy B, Hard A
Awful useless professor.
Davila can be pretty intimidating at first and he loves to put people on the spot, but he is pretty cool and becomes more laid back throughout the semester. As long as you are prepared for class you'll be fine during lectures. All you have to do is put effort and you'll get a good grade. Testsquizzes are moderate to easy.
The real review of Davila: Expect a very confident man who is going to successfully teach you accounting in depth. His class is in no way an easy A class. You will work for whatever grade you get 100%. 1 group project, some tests, expect a quiz every week on prior information. It is absolutely doable and he clearly knows the subject. Work hard.
So rude, terrible experience, not a hard class.
He gets paranoid about copying his work and cheating in any shape or form. If you're shy don't take him, he will put you on spot & make rude jokes. I personally enjoyed his teaching style and appreciate his in-depth knowledge. Make sure to sit next to smart ppl for group quizzes. One of a few classes where I learnt something related to real life.
He was an awful teacher, doesn't explain concepts. He tries to apply everything to the real world but doesn't explain it on paper. What will be on the tests and quizzes is so ambiguous, no one was ever clear on what to study. He calls kids out in class and is very rude. SO UNHELPFUL
He really likes to put students in spot and make you feel stupid. His lectures are not clear and the way he is teaching in the class is different from textbook, so reading textbook is not that helpful.
I can see why some people are intimidated by him. He likes to put students on the spot, and wants us to know how to apply concepts, not just regurgitate information. Some were frustrated that he teaches and tests on things that aren't in the textbooks, but that's what he's there for, right? Otherwise, I'd just read the book. DO NOT SKIP CLASS!
Even though this was the hardest class i have ever taken. Prof Davila really cares about each and every one of his students. He is difficult, but accounting is difficult. its a subject with no mistakes. He prepares you for the real world, so if your up to try hard, and work for a challenge he is the most amazing and caring professor ever.
The least organized teacher I have ever had. He writes page long directions that should really be as short as 2 sentences. His style of teaching is embarrassing to watch usually. He's thee cockiest accountant I've ever met! He is nice for the most part, but not fun to work with/learn from. Emphasis on disorganized and confusing. Take another teach.
The dude refuses to adapt to the new age of electronics. He rolls you for having any electronics out in class, which in my case inhibited my learning. He should accept the fact that the world is changing. Homework every day, quiz every day, makes you feel decently uncomfortable when you show up to class and yea, attendance is mandatory so...
Alright, so Davila is an interesting guy. This class is by no means easy... His tests are difficult, but dont compare his quizzes to his exams because his quizzes were free points in comparison. He can seem condescending in class and out, but he's a good guy, just stay on his good side. Participation is huge so get to the board as often as you can
He is pretty unorganized. He also doesn't use blackboard so it's hard to know your grade. he is also super condescending and rude to people. Participation is huge in the class. My main tip for this class is to take good notes each class and write down the problems you do in-class. I didn't and it made studying for the midterm/final harder.
Quizzes are group quizzes, so pick the smarties. He will list out everything that WILL come out on the exam (tons of stuff). He likes to jump from one material to another, so sometimes it's hard to keep track of the lessons. Take good notes (Copy everything that he wrote on the board), they will MOST likely (99%) come out on the quiz and exam.
Best accounting professor ever. Take him!! He explain things clearly and slowly, not rushing over a whole lot of stuffs like other professors do. He teaches the class from a real business perspective, which is good because its a BUAD class. Overall he is very kind and he make the whole class like a family.
truly the best professor I've had at USC. cares so much about your success and made the class incredibly applicable and important. by far the most important class I've taken in my degree.
I took Ruben's class years ago. I now have an MBA and 9 others letters after my name and I can tell you he was the best professor I've ever had in my life. He relates the subject to the real world. He is not rude, he is challenging you! His tests are hard by design. This is good. He is preparing you for real life! It was an honor to learn from him.
Davila wasn't a good professor and didn't communicate the material or his expectations for exams clearly at all, which made the course a lot more difficult than it had to be. But as long as you show up and participate you'll do fine
Ruben's class is tough. No doubt about that. Lots of homework and quizzes, calls people out, picks on people (jokingly, but often it's just not funny). At his core a very friendly guy, wants you to learn. And I did - I learned A LOT in his class. The workload can overwhelm - so be careful about the other classes in your roster for that semester.
This was the only course at USC where I was pretty much lost in. The grading criteria isn't clear and he jumps from one concept to another quickly. Random group quizzes, hw that he sometimes collects, ask a question in class and you will get a confusing answer, and I just don't think he is very approachable or patient. Too disorganized for me.
He is very funny however attendance is a must. Also his grading criteria were rather unclear and his answer to some question can be vague as well.
He gives you a hard semester while adjusting. I know people claim it's b/c he wants us USC ready and real world ready, but even the way he notifies us last minute on loads of assignments the night before stresses you out. Very unclear with responses to questions, sometimes doesn't answer. Lots of self-studying, expects a lot, puts ppl on blast.
confusing professor. doesnt teach everything clearly.
He really relates the material to the working world! If he doesn't want to answer a question at the time it's asked he won't. gives lots of practice problems and the homework is graded on effort, not accuracy! Weekly group quizzes and the quizzes are the same level of difficulty and wording as the tests.
super confusing.
Take notes in class or you won't do well on the exam. He posts exam outlines the day before your exam and expects you to know everything he said in class. Not as approachable when you go ask him a question. He may not answer it or ask you to answer it yourself. Other than that, he is very knowledgeable and a great man.
He freaks you out all throughout the semester and then settles down towards the end. He keeps you on top of your toes and it's really for the better. He is very last minute with assignments, etc but he will accommodate and understand. He seems intimidating but in reality he's a very nice, genuine guy that loves to smile and connect with students.
Not accessible at all. I took an online class previously with a professor that was more clear and organized. No one knows what he expects, super confusing, doesn't answer your questions, throws a bunch of papers at us, and favors certain students.
Prof Davila is a genuine person but sometimes can come off as too cocky for many students. Instead of answering your questions directly, he often proposes more questions to guide you to the right answers. His quizzes and exams are known to be difficult. Pay attention to everything he says in class. Most likely he'll test you on them.
All BUAD280 courses are tough, and Davila's no exception. You have to go to class and pay attention, most of the stuff on midterms and quizzes comes directly from class. If you read the book and do homework on time you'll have a much easier time keeping up with the material. Our final average was a 44% which ended up a B so try to beat the average
If you pay close attention to his lectures and read the textbook, it's really not that hard to get an A. Attending lectures is a MUST. Take good notes and you're on the right track. Great class by the way, if you're interested in going into business or accounting. He definitely has the connections you'll need.
He makes the class engaging. I really enjoyed Prof Davila. Test were difficult, but he taught us everything we needed to get an A.
The worst accounting professor I took in my life. Not organized at all, very rude, and expects people to know every small detail stated in class.
If you show up to class and do the work you'll be fine. Davila cares about his students and it shows. He can be quirky at times, but came to enjoy his class even though the material itself is dry
Davila's class can be entertaining sometimes. However, he is a bit confusing. You have to check Blackboard to know if there is homework due or if there is a quiz. His grading criteria is unclear as well. His tests are not too difficult if you spend time to study. Make sure you show up and do assignments, and you should be fine.
Great professor that actually cares. Comes off as rude first few weeks but he opens up during the semester and his sense of humor comes out. Some students don't like him because he does not spoon feed you answers and actually makes you think. If you show up to class, do your homework you'll be fine. Very knowledgable and ingenious professor.
Very good teacher. Davila is a master accountant and you really learn a lot about accounting in this class. There's almost nothing about basic financial accounting that you can't deal with if you pay attention and do the work. Very useful for finance, and great start to an accounting major.
He is a great teacher, the only negative is that he is unorganized. You have to check blackboard before class a lot as sometimes he will post at 1AM. To do well in this class you have to work hard. Make sure you pay attention in class, listen to everything he says, and participate. Group quizzes, 2 group presentations, 3 tests, and hw. Great class.
He will do anything to not teach you the most basic principles of accounting. I genuinely enjoy accounting and did well in 280 but oh man does he confuse me. He just goes off track and mentions weird hypothetical examples. I went on khan academy and figured out everything on my own. Don't take him, but if you have to then just do that.
Ruben Davila is not it. He doesn't teach, he expects u to just know. He is insanely disorganized (assigns homework sporadically, tosses handouts at us), and he is frankly downright rude to students. Although I think he means well, he sincerely does make my mon/wed's miserable. I enjoy accounting and he takes the joy out of it.
If you do all the hw(graded on completion),take all the quizzes (pick smart ppl cause its group quizzes), take all the exams, do the group project and attend class every day, you'll pass the class. I didn't do that good on the tests, but he values your effort instead of your test grades. You don't need the book, its on reserve at the ACctLibrary.
The absolute WORST professor I have ever taken. Extremely disorganized, expects a lot from students but gives them zero direction as to what he wants them to do. Group quizzes every week, you have to teach yourself absolutely everything, and he is also very rude and passive aggressive to students. DO NOT TAKE.
Professor Davila is one of my favorite professors at USC. I took him for both 280 and 281. He encourages figuring things out on your own and doesn't hand you answers, but this has made me connect with and retain the information very well. As long as you attend class, there is very little work outside of class besides a pretty simple group project.
I took Professor Davila for 280 and liked his class so much that I took him again for 281. There are some misconceptions in these reviews about this professor. He expects his students to put in the work and give effort but it's because he truly cares about them getting the most out of his class. Best professor I've had in the business school
There is no teaching done by Prof. Davila & he just spends the entire class discussing homework (the solutions to which he cold calls students to come up to the board to explain). I felt like I was teaching myself all the material. Uses blackboard in a disorganized manner. Unclear Deadlines. Avoid!!
He's extremely disorganized and unclear about deadlines. He doesn't teach and only calls on people to do the problem on the whiteboard and gives homework and quizzes with no instructions at all. You have to self study for the tests.
Unclear deadlines, confusing homework, terrible teaching style, calls on kids randomly, communication is TERRIBLE! DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. None of what is taught in class assisted me in studying for exams, I had to do it all by myself. NEVER TAKE A CLASS WITH THIS PROFESSOR
Professor Davila is clearly an expert in his field but he has no idea how to successfully teach an online class. He spends the entire class going through hypothetical situations that can be very confusing and spends essentially zero time actually lecturing. His blackboard is very disorganized and he is unclear about deadlines and due dates.
I was nervous to take Prof. Davila looking at his reviews but I am so glad I did. He's tough because he cold calls students, expecting everyone to have watched the async. videos, read the textbook, and done the homework, but if you do the work and voluntarily participate, he'll be impressed and you will learn SO much!! Definitely recommend.
Easily the worst professor I have ever had. His instructions are always so confusing; we don't know how to submit homework. His lectures are hideously useless: he spends most of the time making football jokes. Not knowing how to teach, he requires us to watch recordings and "self-study material." With the poor teaching, he even curved grades down.
WHATEVER YOU DO, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH HIM.
Honestly, don'r even know how to emphasis my experience, but how is this Professor at USC. He is easily the worst professor I have ever had. He us unorganized, rude at times, doesn't teach the content well, etc. My one main advice: whatever you do, DO NOT take this class.
Just doing my duty, have never rated a professor before, but this class was j woated in general, class bad but the professor is overall a good guy
Professor Davila is easily the worse professor I have had at USC. He is extremely unorganized during lectures and on blackboard. He constantly makes excuses as to why he was late posting homework or grading assignments. It took him until the second to last week of classes for everyone in the class to know what their grade range is.
I wouldn't go out of my way to rate Davila if I didn't think it could provide valuable information to you. I HIGHLY recommend looking for other professors. Davila is very unorganized, inefficient at teaching, and pretty good at wasting time - easily the worst prof I've had at USC.
The biggest problem I have with Davila is the amount of time required for what is a 3 unit class. You'll learn essentially nothing during class, but he expects us to learn the material on our own through hours of asynchronous videos and reading the text book. He's also incredibly disorganized and unclear on expectations, and can be rude at times.
The most disorganized class and professor I've ever had in my life. You have to dig through a weekly essay in order to figure out what is due and expected of you every week. Most of the "learning" you do is through self-studying and unclear asynchronous videos. He seems like a nice and genuine guy, but just can't teach.
Professor Davila is incapable of clear communication. Posts are difficult to follow and due dates hard to find. Extremely particular with how he wants you to format an email to him and is notoriously bad to contact with little to no ownership for things that are in reality his fault. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!
A lot of people rip on him, but to be quite honest with you; is he the best professor? No; Is he the easiest to deal with? No; is he easy to follow? Absolutely not. But he is a kind and genuine person at heart, and that counts for something in my book.
This professor is unclear on his instruction for homework and lecture. His blackboard is unorganized, which makes it hard to find class instructions. He requires you to attend zoom lecture but often go off tangent on talking about basketball and football. He always interrupts students who are asking a question in class
I wouldn't recommend taking Davila. Is his class awful? No. But he's probably the most disorganized professor I've ever had. You'll never really know what material is being covered and he gets rude when you try to clarify. You'll also be required to watch a bunch of asynchronous videos on top of teaching yourself all the material in the textbook.
Very untransparent. Extremely unorganized.
Davila is the most unorganized and confusing professor I have had to date. Attendance is mandatory but you'll learn close to nothing during class and have to self-study everything. He takes forever to grade even with several TAs and still hasn't given us a final grade two weeks after the class ended. Avoid if at all possible.
You not only had to attend lectures but also watch additional 30+ minute long videos each week and read the text book chapters. Gives a ton of homework with unclear instructions and constantly gives quizzes. Very unorganized and is constantly cold calling people in class and then is rude if you are not able to answer.
Professor Davila is HIGHLY disorganized with Blackboard and instruction. Outside of class, you're expected to read your textbook, do Connect hw, manual hw, AND roughly an hour of asynchronous recordings each week. Takes a long time to grade even though he has like 6 TAs. A lot of work for a 3 credit class. Just take someone else.
Learned a lot in this class because it jumps right into accounting, but the work is very unclear until it's gone over several times and there's a lot of asynchronous videos to watch ahead of class. Schedule posting is not regular so hw is posted only a few days prior to it being due sometimes. I do think cold calls during class keeps people engaged
Taking him right now over zoom and he's okay. Cold calls on students, sends out homework the night before class and is unorganized. His instructions on quizzes/projects are unclear most of the time. Asking questions can be intimidating. I can tell he wants us to learn and he is a nice person but he is not the best professor out there.
This class moves fast, so you have to pay attention in lectures, stay on top of async videos, homework, etc. During lectures, be ready to get called on at any time and he may seem cold and rude, but don't take it personally. He wants everyone to succeed, just work hard, show up, and put in effort and he will appreciate you.
Be ready to work in this class if you have no prior knowledge of accounting. He teaches the class as if everyone has a background in business, which majority of us don't. He gives out weekly group quizzes that can be ridiculously long with a time constraint. Be sure to keep up with lectures and videos, bc he will cold call when you least expect it.
He was unorganized and the class had no set timeline which made it extremely hard to navigate and to work work around him. There was no grading criteria or complete instructions for the quiz and the exams. Overall, I don't think even he knew what was happening, seemed like he had too much work on his hands. However, he seemed like a nice guy.
TERRIBLE! DO NOT TAKE HIM. Complete this class with another professor. Takes him forever to grade things and assigns busy work that he will never actually grade. Quiz almost every week of class. The class is very unstructured and homework/quiz instructions are vague most of the time. Listen to the reviews and avoid him.
Professor Davila is definitely an interesting character. No, he's not the greatest teacher but his message rings true that if you "come to class and try everyday then you'll pass the class." Yes, he's unorganized. Yes, quizzes are weekly (group quizzes though). However, considering the other options for this course, I think he is fine.
For the love of God, avoid Ruben if you can
AVOID! So unorganized, if you need to ask questions he gets mad and won't even answer. You can never know what your grade is since it takes him forever to grade assignments. Participation matters, u can't really miss a class at all. Midterm is super hard (around 35 multiple-choice, like 3 essay questions and 2 journal entries.
Disorganized black board, expects you to prepare for class discussions one day in advanced, 2 group projects, weekly quizzes, cold calls, and can never explain concepts properly. I never had a professor as irresponsible as Davilla. The reviews are 100% true, if he likes you he expects a lot of out of you then gets disappointed if you don't perform
I do feel like he cares, he just isn't a good teacher. Bad at explaining concepts, doesn't respond to messages, doesn't grade work, and WAY too much work for a 4 unit class. Asych videos, asych hw, manual hw, group projects, and mandatory class attendance. Don't feel like I learned anything at all for the amount of work assigned. Beware TA's awful.
Professor Davila is by far the most unorganized professor I've ever had. His blackboard is such a mess, his lectures are all over the place, and he has no clear direction with the class sessions. I had no other choice but to take this class with him but if it's possible, I would avoid him at all costs. He makes the class difficult to get through.
Davila is entertaining, and cares about his student, however he is extremely unorganized and assigns an unreasonable amount of work.
1) Highly unorganized. 2) Does not respond to emails does he care or what? 3) Too much work for this class. 4) Makes you participate BUT he is often RUDE and does not want to respond to your questions. 5) UNORGANIZED, again!!!!!
He's highly knowledgeable and good at explaining concepts, highly accessible during office hours, and weekly group quizzes are not too bad. As long as you come to class and keep up with the class material, you'll do well.
dont take this man. worst prof at usc. not nice
Very very unorganized, unclear expectations, & poorly written weekly addendums. Great guy outside of the course.
He is a great genius but not the best professor. It's very hard for extremely smart people to be organized, but if you're willing to deal with it but learn from the best - professor Davilla is your choice. His blackboard is a joke, but if you have any questions or you're confused, do not hesitate to chat with him during his office hours.
Davila penalizes you for not understanding the way he formats BB. He often refuses to answer questions because he has vaguely posted it somewhere on BB. At the end of the day, you will learn nothing because of how confusing his teaching style is. Submission deadlines for assignments are confusing and his tests are ridiculously hard.
The class was the hardest thing Ive ever had to do in my whole life. Make sure to do all the assignments and watch all the videos on top of paying a lot of attention in class! you wont be able to skip even one class because itll be so hard to catch up. and attendance is very important. Test materials are given so late and is a real lot!
He calls on you wether you're ready or not and a lot of people don't like that, that is why there are tons of negative reviews. Like it or not, this is how the real world is and I thank Davila for being hard on students. This class is really not that difficult, people just don't put in the work. 351 and 306 are much much harder. Challenge yourself.
AVOID AT ALL COSTS. He is BY FAR the worst professor I have had at USC.He is condescending, rude and INCREDIBLY unorganized. He rambles on about topics unrelated to class and if you ask him a question you will most likely be rudely told to be patient.Due dates change last min (pushed earlier) with no notice. Please, let this be a warning. AVOID
Worst. Professor. Ever. The complete opposite of the "Trojan Spirit".
Thought he was an excellent lecturer. The material was challenging but I thought he taught the concepts extremely well. Make sure to check BB as he updates often with quiz info. Exams are straight from his lectures. Take good notes and participate. Not sure why some ppl are complaining, yea it's challenging but study and you got it.
I DO NOT recommend taking Davila. He is extremely unorganized and changes due dates without notifying. I haven't learned anything because he rambles about irrelevant things. If you ask a question, he'll likely be condescending and rude. The homework is never what we do in class and he expects you to know topics we never covered. Stay away!
A lot of unfair reviews. Class is not easy and explanations are not always clear, but office hours are very helpful. He values a lot if sees students' effort. The class atmosphere is very friendly. He is not an indifferent person and is very attentive to students' needs. Be active during the class - you will be ok! I would definitely recommend him.
This class can be disorganized and difficult at times, but Professor Davila is honestly extremely caring. There are weekly group quizzes and in my opinion, too much asynchronous work. Listen, attend every lecture, practice, and you will succeed. Professor is a
Professor Davila, in my opinion, was my favorite professor during my first semester at USC. Many people have issues with him, but if you want to understand financial/managerial accounting seriously, he's your guy. Expect to go up to the board quite a bit throughout the semester. I met him outside of class, and he was very humble and friendly.
Even though he was quite disorganized as he never used any presentations in class, his tests were very similar to his weekly group quizzes. Be ready to go up to the board a lot of times and attend classes as otherwise, you will not know whats happened. However, there is a lot of asynchronous studying to do.
Everything posted on Blackboard is extremely disorganized and difficult to navigate. He is sometimes condescending when you ask questions during class. He randomly calls on people and you have to go up to the board when working on problems. Go to every class since it will be difficult to catch up even if you miss just one lecture.
Blackboard was disorganized, but he did a great job of explaining most of the content during class. If you want a decent grade in the course, be sure to watch the corresponding asynchronous videos before class. Be prepared to be called up to solve problems on the board. Midterm and final are difficult. Favorite Professor so far!
I took Professor Davila's class for BUAD 305. I honestly learned so much more in this class than both of my previous accounting classes at community college. I believe whoever rates him poorly due to him making "rude" comments is invalid. He will definitely poke fun and roast students, but do not take it personal. He truly will improve your skills.
Professor Davila truly cares and respects the Trojan lifestyle, he expects you to assimilate and become comfortable with USC and its core concepts since his class will be one of your first at USC. His teaching ability was amazing, although do expect to get called up to work on things in front of the class in order to learn. Definitely attend!!!
Ruben is by far the most engaging professor I've had at USC. If you prefer PowerPoint lectures, this professor is not for you. He primarily relies on practice problems that we work through as a class. Make sure to constantly pay attention because he cold calls often. Participate, show up, and try to get on his good side.
Easily the most engaging professor I've had at USC. If you show up prepared and enjoy being engaged in class and are comfortable answering questions in front of others you'll love this dude. If not you'll hate it lol. He's a bit stern but IMO not in a mean way, forces students to critically think which most Marshall students aren't used to.
Professor Davila's lectures were extremely engaging and hands on. He is a very caring professor and therefore can also be hard on you because he wants you to do your best and truly understand the material. Going to office hours often to do extra practice problems on the whiteboard will really get you on his good side!
Rude, disrespectful, lazy, and unorganized.
I like Professor Davila as a person because he is very empathetic and understanding. However, his class format is definitely not for everyone. Be sure to keep good notes and write everything he says down. He doesn't provide many resources. Be sure to attend office hours. Overall, good experience but not for everyone.
Great Professor, but his class is so disorganized. You won't know your grade until the day grades are due for OASIS, and the class blackboard is a mess. Attend class, don't be late, and participate. Do all of those, and you're guaranteed a B- bottom line. Your grade is made up of participation, midterm, final, group quizzes, and homework.
This is the most disorganized class I have ever had. The professor is all over the place and you practically have to re-teach yourself all the content. He has asynch videos that sort of help. He cold calls and you must attend class. If you try, he guarantees a B-. Nice guy, but do yourself a favor and don't select this professor.
I've known him for less than a month and I can tell he is quite condescending. It's unfortunate I'll have to know him longer.
no amount of words can describe my hatred towards this man. unorganized, inaccessible, rude, and makes assignments due when he did not teach the content in class. if you are seeing this run will all your might AWAY from this class. i've learned more about his personal life more than accounting from this d1 yapper and poor educator at best.
It is a hard course, a disorganized course, and a course where you are instructed to make friends and get some sort of help of some sort of homework. (but if you just want to chill and get a b-,,,,,, go for it)
ABSOLUTELY ARTOCIOUS! RUDE, CONDESCENDING, DISORGANIZED, UNHELPFUL, OFTEN GOES ON TANGENT. The most common thing I've heard from his class is "ask your classmate, I'm not answering this", "I don't wanna do this", "I forgot where we left off", "my daughter.........", "The football game......" He's simply unfit for teaching, despite him being a CPA.
Run. He does not have any structure, does not teach you anything properly and expects you to know everything on your own. He is extremely rude, disorganized and unhelpful. His homework assignments, midterms, quizzes, participation etc are extremely tough and hard to get good grades on.
He's a bit of a weird one. In a sense, if you're taking 305 you're expected to know the material and this course is a refresher added with some topics you didn't go through in college. His blackboard is extremely disorganized so don't expect being on track if you don't attend class. Comes off a bit pretentious at times, just get used to it.
Hehehehehehehehe, I love RUBEN!!! Loved his personality. Not a good teacher but he makes good jokes!
banger prof. yaps a lil too much sometimes during lecture but he gets stuff done. yes hes disorganized but im fine with that. i feel like i learned more from his class being under pressure compared to my other classes bc he will call u out for zzzing in his class. Overall a W prof. great one term prof and on to taylor wieson we go!
Definitely one of my fav profs at USC. His teaching style might be difficult for some people but I'm fine with it. First half of the semester will be somewhat slow but it will pick up towards the end. As long as you participate and volunteer to do problems on the board, you'll get to his good side.
The best thing I can say about Prof. Davila is that he seems like a sweet if slightly senile old man. Would I want to be friends with him if I met him at church or a cafe? Yes! Would I want him teaching future accountants how to create balance sheets? Absolutely not!
This was my first Acct class & I definitely learned & enjoyed his class as it's he compares a lot of topics to real case scenarios. Just go to all of his lectures & you can definitely understand all the topics w/o even reading the textbooks. Also, watch his asych videos for reviews. He's a great professor; I don't know why he has bad ratings.
I really don't understand Professor Davilas's reviews. He is a good teacher with a passion for accounting. I think the bad reviews are from students who did poorly and are using his personality as a scapegoat for their poor performance and lack of effort. Just study; unlike most of the class, you will get an A. Also, minimum -B 'grading contract'
If you pay attention and participate, you will love him! He is quite a fun guy, and class was entertaining at many times. He engages the class with humor, and by making everyone answer questions, but he does lose engagement sometimes via yap. Other reviews call him rude, but his apparent "rudeness" is just tough love. Gives many quizzes (not pop).
prof. davila isn't as bad as people make him out to be. he can be kind of abrasive but he just seems like a really particular person, which sometimes manifests as rudeness. i would say he has good intentions and his lecturing is pretty interactive! make sure you attend class; i missed just a couple classes and had to study a lot to catch up.
Prof. Ruben isn't as bad as the other reviews make him seem. He's a very particular person, and as long as you adjust to his grading criteria and demands, you'll do just fine. His very specifics can make people dislike him, but if you're adaptable and go along with it, he's a pretty interesting guy.
Professor Davila is great. If you show up and try, it's pretty easy to understand the material and perform well. Show up, take notes, ask questions. If you're absent you miss a lot of material and he takes forever to grade things, but he's really a good professor
Professor Davila has a very specific teaching style, but with some adaptability, his class can be an engaging experience. Utilize the free textbook and attend lectures to stay on top of the material. unstuck study is a helpful study tool alongside other resources.
if you try in this class you will learn a lot, smart dude he's an accountant and a lawyer, but sometimes forgets he's teaching an entry-level course because of how advanced he is. If he likes you, you will do great, all quizzes are with groups (people sitting next to you) exams are really difficult and specific
Davila is a nice guy, his lectures are engaging. He is super unorganized and sometimes goes on random rants during lectures. Quizzes every week but they are done with groups, the midterm is pretty hard but he says on the first day if he sees you put effort in the class meaning showing up and doing well in the group project you guaranteed a B grade
Professor Davila is knowledgeable but creates a stressful learning environment. His use of cold calling can intimidate students still grasping material. You could bypass this through office hours and D1 glazing. Confident students may thrive, but if you're new to accounting or prefer a supportive environment, this class may not be the best fit.
He's going to call on you, he's going to put you in uncomfortable situations for the sake of growth. In the same way a sapling should receive a little turbulence to grow stronger he will do the same for you. In the moment it may be a little awkward but I promise you come next semester you'll be missing a professor like him, someone who cares.
Controversial but this guy isnt half bad. He definitely cares about his students suceeding. Even if you do horrible on the exams if u show up everyday and show effort (participation, hmw, etc) he'll make sure you pass. Theres lots of groupwork and forced participation. He has some "interesting" rules and can be a bit rude at times but he's not bad
Prior to the course I was scared. I understood where all the bad comments from from but as the course went on I actually really enjoyed the class. He is a yapper for sure, but he makes some funny jokes and remarks. He will pick on you if you sit near the aisle but honestly not terrible. I will miss him, i felt like i learned a lot from him
Ridiculous grader on top of already extremely difficult exams and (group) quizzes. Teaching style is horrible (cold calling and solving problems on the board); will often go on tangents that make you tune out. Not at all accommodating to personal circumstances and can be straight up rude. Gets mad when you send emails or ask questions in class.
Smart but brightspace and content is extremely disorganized. Extremely old school and my way or the highway attitude. Would avoid if possible
On the last day of class, I turned to the person next to me and said, “Wow, that was the first time I actually learned something.” Davila is an inefficient and unproductive professor who doesn't teach. He hands out a paper, makes students struggle at the board, and grades inconsistently. Worst professor I've had.
Extremely rude and unprofessional. Very unapproachable and clearly thinks that he is the smartest guy in the room. Is also very disorganized, does not teach efficiently, and you are likely going to have to learn the course on your own. He is one of 2 teachers for 305 so he can get away with a lot, but I would avoid if possible.
He's amazing. If u can take his class! This was my first accounting class and he broke concepts down very nicely. Make sure to understand the problems/concepts on quizzes, and HW for the midterms. Go to office hours to get clarification on HW and quizzes. Always available to meet. 10/10 recommend.
hes amazing! highly recommend everyone to take his class. I have no background in accounting (science major) but he was able to breakdown concepts very nicely. make sure to understand the questions/concepts on the quizzes and HW for midterms. go to office hours if you need clarification. very accessible out of class and chill guy. Also Participate!
The professor is amazing and really cares about students' success both in and out of class. Success in this class comes from attending every class period. Definitely have to put in work outside of class, but I truly learned so much from him!! You can tell he loves what he does.
2 Exams, weekly in-person group quizzes, 1 group project, & homework done on Excel. Very disorganized professor, but he's very knowledgeable and cares about his students to pass. He will call you out so be prepared, make sure you're on top of everything. Straightforward class and easy A if you study and put in the work. Def will miss his class!
